Barry MilesFusion Is Barry Miles ... CD
Jazz Heritage, 1978. Used ... $14.99 19.99
A brilliant little record, and one that really lives up to the heady claim of its title! The lineup here is spare, but the sound is really full – swelling with complicated colors, images, and tones that delight us with each new track – a masterpiece in understatement, and one of the most perfectly realized blends of acoustic and electric jazz instrumentation from the late 70s! The sound is really a perfect "fusion" of modes – with guitar from Vic Juris and keyboards from Barry Miles dancing alongside the bass of John Burr and drums of Terry Silverlight – never too jamming or too rock-influenced, but always filled with energy and a sense of imagination. Titles include the beautiful "Tandoori" – a stone jazz dance groover with some great scatted vocals alongside the guitar – and other tracks include "Sunrise", "Streams", "Routes", "Follow Me", and "Country Miles". Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really beautiful pairing of talents – saxophonist Eric Koss and keyboardist Barry Miles – both players who'd worked together on a famous album led by Miles, and another studio session on the Muse label – but who sound very different here in the spare space of a live performance! Miles is especially great, and has this warmth and subtle soul that really matches the edge in Kloss's horn – always great in other settings, but very open, honest, and human here – on a recording that reminds us what a great contribution he gave to jazz during the late 60s and 70s. Titles on this second volume include "Michell", "My One & Only Love", "No Title", and a sixteen minute "Free Improvisation". CD

Columbia/Wounded Bird, 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
Barry Miles is riding the Sky Train – and at a pretty fast clip too, given the jamming energy of this record! The album's one of Miles' most full-on fusion sets – but it's also one of his most soulful as well, thanks to strong use of horns on most numbers – with players like Randy Brecker, Tom Harrell, and Jim Buffington really warming things up. Eric Kloss is in the core group alongside Miles keyboards – and his work on alto sax is a treasure – filled with feeling, even at a fast clip – and sweetly soulful on some of the mellower numbers too. Vic Juris plays guitar, and titles include "Sky Train", "Big A", "Old Man Jack", "Relay", "A Waltz For You", and "Cityscape". CD

Mainstream/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
Killer keyboards from the amazing Barry Miles – one of the lesser-known talents of the 70s jazz funk generation, but a heck of a great little player – especially on this album! The set has Barry playing both acoustic and electric keys – sometimes in a soaring, full-on mode that reminds us of bigger fusion stars from the time – sometimes in a warmer, more spacious approach – one that has a fair bit of spiritual soul in the mix! The rest of the group's a quartet – with John Abercrombie on guitar, Frank Tusa on bass, and Terry Silverlight on drums – and some of the best tracks on the record echo the "scatbird" title – and feature Miles vocalizing wordlessly along with his keys! This approach is heard on the cuts "Scatbird" and "Latina" – and other tracks include "Skeleton Dance", "Arrows & Eagles", "Life-Cycle", "Suburban Shuffle", and "First Love". CD

✨✧ Barry MilesWhite Heat ... CD
Mainstream/Solid (Japan), 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from keyboardist Barry Miles – and one of the most compelling early 70s sides on the Mainstream Records label! Barry's got a way of really making his keys sing out nicely – playing both acoustic and electric piano with plenty of warm tones and gently flowing modes – but never in a way that's too far out from jazz, or too smooth to be sleepy. The set features twin guitars from Pat Martino and John Abercrombie, both of whom underscore the chromatic nature of Miles' playing – and other players include Lew Tabackin on tenor and flute, Victor Gaskin on bass, Terry Silverlight on drums, and Warren Smith on congas. Titles are mostly Miles originals – and include "Descent", "Tangent", "White Heat", and "Little Heart Of Pieces". CD

Barry Finnerty, 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
That's right, Barry Finnerty – the same cat who played with Miles back in the 70s, returning to the forefront strongly with this fresh set as a leader! Finnerty's still got all the sharp edges and strong sense of flow we remember from years back – and the session works through lots of modal grooves, as you might guess from the Coltrane title – tunes that are filled with rhythmic changes that are opened up nicely by Finnerty's guitar! Other players include David Kikoski on piano and Fender Rhodes, Ron McClure on bass, Chuggy Carter on percussion, and either Victor Jones or Graham Hawthorne on drums. Titles include "Interception", "Big Nick", "Knee Bop", "The Terrace", "Resolution", and "Green Dolphin Street". CD

Electric Flag/Paul BeaverTrip – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Sidewalk, 1967. Very Good ... $19.99 24.99
One of the trippiest soundtracks of the 60s – a wonderful blend of psych tracks from The Electric Flag, and moogier electronic moments from the great Paul Beaver! The Flag are at their best here – playing tunes that move from short bursts of fuzz to longer jams – laid out with great work from Mike Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites on guitars, Barry Goldberg on organ, and Buddy Miles on drums – with a nice sense of arrangement and juxtaposition that rivals Spirit's equally great soundtrack material for Model Shop. This one's more of an all-out rocker – although the moog balances things out nicely – and the whole thing's definitely a cut above the usual thrown-together exploitation soundtrack of the period. There's lots of little crazy cuts, and a long one called "Fine Jung Thing" – plus the titles "Gettin' Hard", "Peter Gets Off", "The Other Ed Norton", "Psyche Soap", and "Joint Passing". Gil Evans OrchestraInto The Hot ... LP
Impulse, 1961. Very Good+ ... $84.99
The harder of the two Gil Evans albums on Impulse to find, and the best – really far-reaching material that has Evans coming into contact with some of the hippest jazz players of his generation! The record's got three incredible tracks written by Cecil Taylor – a very bold move for Evans, given Taylor's strongly out reputation even at this point in his career – and possibly even more bold, given that Taylor's on the tracks playing piano, alongside players who include Archie Shepp, Jimmy Lyons, Sonny Murray, and Henry Grimes. The material's fantastic, and is a key part of Taylor's work at the time, and shows a very different setting for his piano – a bit of tension with the larger Evans group, in a way that's almost more compelling than his own early dates as a leader! Taylor titles include "Pots", "Bulbs", and "Mixed". The other tracks on the album were written by John Carisi, who wrote the classic "Israel" for Miles Davis' nine piece group in the late 40s – but who here contributes "Moon Taj", "Angkor Wat", and "Barry's Tune". Carisi's tracks are a bit more subdued, but no less wonderful – and arrangements are by Taylor and Carisi, of their own music, presented with the Evans modern touch. If you ever needed a record to convince you that Gil Evans was a genius, this is it! LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange and black label stereo pressing, with RVG stamp – a nice copy!)

VariousCafe Apres Midi – Skye & Gryphon For Cafe Apres Midi ... CD
Skye (Japan), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $8.99 24.99
Groovy jazz from 2 very cool labels – the related Skye and Gryphon companies of the late 60s and mid 70s, respectively – home to some very very cool bits! Skye's best known as the home of Cal Tjader and Gary McFarland in their post-Verve years – and the label's got a feel that's very much in the spirit of both artists – often blending together jazz, Latin, and easy grooves with a dreamy floating sort of quality. Gryphon recordings came a few years later – and had a warm and mellow 70s jazz sort of feel – using richer production to deeply color work by a variety of well-known artists who got a chance to stretch out in their albums for the label. Despite the difference of a few years between them, the work from both labels sits very nicely together here – thanks to an expert job of compilation by Toru Hashimoto, the force behind the Cafe Apres Midi and Free Soul series! Titles include "Mixing" by Airto, "What's Going On" and "My Favorite Things" by Louis Hayes, "Tandoori" by Barry Miles, "Flea Market" and "Suburbia" by Gary McFarland, "Theme From Peter Gunn" by Chuck Rainey, "Don't Fence Me In" by Grady Tate, "Viva Peraza" by Armando Peraza, "La Pasionaria" by Michel Legrand, "You'll Never Get To Heaven" and "Armando's Bossa" by Cal Tjader, "Bluesette" by Mel Torme & Buddy Rich, and "Change Partners" by Phil Woods. The instrumentation also features heavy electric piano from Jan Hammer, other keyboards from Barry Miles, bass from Anthony Jackson, and drums from Steve Gadd and Lenny White – all fusion powerhouse players who really take over the groove at times, but still leave enough room on the record for some gentler sounds from Paco and Al. One of the more obscure Roberta Flack albums from the classic years – but maybe not as obscure as the movie for which it was created – as the strength of the record has helped the album circulate a lot longer than the film stayed on the screens – to the point where it's a great chapter of Roberta's rich career, and one that goes way past the hits! Flack produced the whole set herself – and there's a nice mix of modes going on here, including some jazzier bits that get to showcase keyboards nicely – played both by Flack and by Barry Miles. Peabo Bryson sings on one track, and Luther Vandross helped Flack with the vocal arrangements – on titles that include "Love Always Commands", "Lovin You Is Such An Easy Thing To Do", "Rollin On", "Qual E Malindrinho", and "Hittin Me Where It Hurts". Groove Merchant, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The Ebony Godfather is grooving here with a set of fuller backings – sweet clubby funk, arranged and conducted by Brad Baker (of B Baker Chocolate Company fame) – all as a showcase for Joe's sweet work on flute and tenor sax! There's a fair bit of keyboards on the tunes – played by Pat Rebillot and Barry Miles – and Steve Gadd's playing the drums on the date, which helps the rhythms keep a bit of an edge, even amidst the larger backing. Some cuts have backing chorus vocals, in a style used on other Thomas albums – and although definitely touched by a bit of disco fever, the album's still got a jazzy element too – like some of the crossover club sessions on the Kudu label from the 70s! Titles include "Funky Fever", "Feelins From Within", "Polarizer", "Coco", "Galaxy Dreamin", and "Venus". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Al Di MeolaLand Of The Midnight Sun ... LP
Columbia, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A real 70s standout from guitarist Al Di Meola – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of most of his albums from the decade! The record's one that broke Al's talents out to so many different groups – yet never in a way that waters down his sound, nor dims his genius for a solo. Al plays a host of guitars – electric, and both six and 12 string acoustic – the latter of which are especially beautiful, and handled in a balance between European virtuoso modes, and some of the more rhythmic elements of the American fusion scene. Speaking of fusion, the other players on the date really help set the tone – Chick Corea on keyboards and piano, Barry Miles on Fender Rhodes and mini-moog, Stanley Clarke on bass, and both Steve Gadd and Lenny White on drums – each setting a different pace when they appear. Titles include "The Wizard", "Suite Golden Dawn", "Short Tales Of The Black Forest", and "Land Of The Midnight Sun". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Conrad HerwigLatin Side Of McCoy Tyner ... CD
Savant, 2024. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Trombonist Conrad Herwig has a great way of reworking older jazz tunes with a bold Latin Jazz vibe – a project he's done with the music of Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, and others – and which here really explodes with a great soulful sensibility on the music of McCoy Tyner! Given the oft-modal, inherently rhythmic quality of most of Tyner's music, the match is a perfect one – carried off here with a core group that's really wonderful – Craig Handy on tenor and baritone, Alex Norris on trumpet, Bill O'Connell on piano, Ruben Rodriguez on bass, Robby Ameen on drums,a nd Camilo Molina on congas – plus guest piano from Eddie Palmieri on just one track (despite his name being large on the cover!) Conrad is the core throughout, and his trombone solos have a way of linking the modes of older Latin greats like Barry Rogers with the hardbop and spiritual jazz currents in the music. Titles include "Fly With The Wind", "Passion Dance", "Reaching Fourth", "Blues On The Corner", "Mellow Minor", and "Search For Peace". CD

✨✧ VariousFeeling Good – Funk, Soul, & Deep Jazz Gems – The Supreme Sound Of Producer Bob Shad ... CD
Mainstream/We Want Sounds (France), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The great Bob Shad is a hell of a fellow – a jazz producer who did amazing work for Mercury Records in the 50s, captured postwar blues on his own small label, set loose a run of excellent 60s jazz and vocal releases, then really found his strength as the 70s moved in – and his Mainstream Records label became a showcase for some of the hippest and most righteous artists of the time! This collection focuses on the best of the best of the cuts that crackled on Mainstream – mostly funky and spiritual jazz numbers, but mixed with a few vocal cuts too – often served up in that trademark blend of electric and acoustic that made Shad's productions so great – with a vibe that was so different than music coming from labels like Prestige, Fantasy, or CTI at the time. The choice of cuts is wonderful, and the set boasts liner notes by Judd Apatow – who turns out to be Bob's grandson! Titles include "Mask" by Shelly Manne, "Soulsides" by Art Farmer, "Magical Connection" by Sarah Vaughan, "Soul Village" by Blue Mitchell, "House Of The Rising Funk" by Afrique, "Abscretions" by Buddy Terry, "Right On" by Maxine Weldon, "Red Clay" by Jack Wilkins, "Scatbird" by Barry Miles, "Rum & Mumbles" by Clark Terry, "I Ain't Got Much" by Ellerine Harding, "Granite & Concrete" by Blue Mitchell, "Feelin Good" by Carmen McRae, and "Quadrivium" by Hadley Caliman. ✨✧ Mel TormeTorme – A New Album ... CD
Gryphon, 1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful mid-career set from Mel Torme – a real sophisticated standout recorded in the years before his later comeback albums on Cocord – with a hip vibe that's relatively unique! The album's one of the late efforts from the Skye Records imprint – recorded in London with full backings from Chris Gunning, who gives Mel some of the same mature charts that Skye brought to the vocals of Grady Tate at the start of the 70s – and like those albums, a balance between larger charts and jazzier moments – punctuated points in the instrumentation that sparkle from contributions by Phil Woods on alto, Barry Miles and Gordon Beck on piano, Vic Juris on guitar, and Kenny Wheeler on trumpet. Mel's wonderful in the setting – a bit free of the cliche of his later years, and wrapped up in a perfect mode that fits his velvet fog sound like a glove – on titles that include some great 70s choices, and even a few Torme originals. Annie Ross provides a bit of guest vocals at one point – and tracks include "Send In The Clowns", "Ordinary Fool", "New York State Of Mind", "Bye Bye Blackbird", and "All In Love Is Fair". CD

A sweet little set from percussionist Willie Rodriguez – one that combines Latin and jazz influences with effortless ease! Instead of the usual early 60s session of this nature – which usually had a straight jazz group with added Latin percussion – this one seems to start from more of a Latinized perspective, then jazz things up a bit with some strong solo work from Seldon Powell. Powell rarely got the chance to play in a session of this nature – working here in only a quartet setting, which means that his work on tenor, alto, and flute really cooks up with plenty of strong notes on the date. Milestone/Prestige, 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
Two stormers from one of the greatest alto talents of the 60s! The album The Mode is quite possibly Sonny Red's best non-Blue Note session – and a real winner with a group that includes Grant Green on guitar, and either Barry Harris or Cedar Walton on piano. Red's tone is one of our favorites from the time, and his alto has a nice bite and a soulful raspy quality that's just great. The album includes the long groover titled "The Mode", plus the cuts "Super 20", "Ko-Kee", and "I Like The Likes Of You". Images is another gem from Sonny – one of his few sessions as a leader from the 60s – and it's got a nice soul jazz groove, with accompaniment by Grant Green, Blue Mitchell, and Barry Harris, and a lot of nice laidback tracks in the Jazzland style. Tracks include "Blue Sonny", "Images", "Dodge City", and "The Rhythm Thing". 13 tracks in all, and great stuff! CD
