✨✧ Stan GetzBaubles Bangles & Beads ... CD
Get Back (Italy), 1961/1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
Two slices of live work by Stan Getz – both pretty darn great! The first half of the album features Getz blowing with a relatively modern group – Steve Kuhn on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – a really magical quartet that open up with a sense of flow that Stan was only just beginning to show in his music at this point – almost a Sweet Rain sort of mode, but done live here in 1961 many years before that album! Tracks by this group include "Where Do You Go", "Airegin", and "Baubles Bangles & Beads". The second half features a 1966 performance from Berlin – again relatively creative and with modern overtones – thanks to a group that includes Gary Burton on vibes, Chuck Israels on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums. The Burton/Getz combination is as winning here as it is on any of their few other recordings together – and titles include "O Grande Amor", "Blues Walk", "On Green Dolphin Street", and "The Shadow Of Your Smile". Pepper AdamsPepper Adams Quintet ... CD
Mode/Muzak (Japan), 1957. New Copy ... $8.99 24.99
An obscure late 50s gem from Pepper – a stripped-down quartet session that has him blowing in a very open-ended mode – quite a difference from some of his more tightly arranged sets! The feel's a bit like Pepper's work with Donald Byrd, but even more openly swinging – played by a quintet that includes Stu Williamson on trumpet, Carl Perkins on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums. Tracks are all long and fresh – and the record's almost got the feel of a great Prestige blowing session from the time. Pepper's work on baritone is jaw-dropping throughout – and titles include "Unforgettable", "Baubles Bangles & Beads", "Freddie Froo", and "Muezzin". CD

Airto/DeodatoFingers/Airto & Deodato In Concert (SACD multi-channel disc) ... CD
CTI/Vocalion (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $21.99 24.99
CTI Records meets that Brazilian fusion sound of the 70s – served up here on two classic albums! Fingers is one of Airto's greatest records ever – a really hard hitting batch of tracks that mix sharp-edged fusion lines with some earthier Brazilian percussion touches – all in a way that nicely steps off of Airto's first few American releases, and warms the groove up with a nice dose of California soul! Flora Purim joins in here on both vocals and percussion – and the rest of the group features Hugo Fattoruso on keyboards and harmonica, Jorgte Fattoruso on drums, and David Amaro on both electric and acoustic guitars – shifting nicely between both instruments in a way that further underscores the blended vibe of the record! Most of these tracks are Airto classics – like "Tombo in 7/4", "San Francisco River", "Romance Of Death", "Ringers", and "Wind Chant" – and the record has a very sweet CTI production style, but is still rough enough around the edges to keep things nice and real! Deodato In Concert is an excellent little live set from Deodato – hard to believe because the sound's just as tight and funky as his studio albums, and possibly even more interesting because he manages to pull it off equally well in a live setting! The record features percussion by Airto, guitar by John Tropea, and vocals by Flora Purim – and those are just the marquee names of a large and amazing grew of great musicians! All tracks are long and complicated, for very hynotic feel throughout. The funkiest number is "Tropea", which has a nice long 8 minute groove – and the set also features a cover of Steely Dan's "Do It Again", plus the tracks "Parana", "Branches", "Baubles, Bangles And Beads" and "Skyscraper". Amazing! CD
(Hybrid Super Audio CD pressing – also works on standard CD players!)

DeodatoDeodato (Prelude/Deodato 2) ... LP
CTI (Japan), Early 1970s. Near Mint- 2LP ... $28.99 38.99
Both of the classic Deodato albums for CTI – back to back in a single Japanese-only set! First up is Prelude – a legendary album from the 70s funk scene – and one of the crowning achievements of keyboard maestro Eumir Deodato! Deodato got his start during the bossa years of the 60s – where his sophisticated charts were already enough to make his career a landmark – but in the following decade he picked up the Fender Rhodes, and really took off in a great new direction with classic records like this! The set's a wonderful blend of larger charts and jazzy soloing – with sublime Rhodes lines from the leader, plus a mix of acoustic and electric instrumentation in the best CTI mode – underscored by percussion from both Ray Barretto and Airto. The features Deodato's remake of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" into the funky "2001" – soaring with Fender Rhodes lines that set a new standard for the instrument, with a funky undercurrent that few would have expected for the tune. Other tracks are nice too – and include a great bossa-y version of "Baubles Bangles & Beads", plus "Spirit Of Summer", "September 13", and "Carly & Carole". Next is Deodato 2, filled with funky keyboards galore – and one of the greatest records ever from this legendary Brazilian jazz talent! The album follows nicely off Deodato's Prelude classic for CTI – and like that one, this set's built on long-flowing tunes that rise and fall with a wonderful sense of rhythm – a sublime electric piano groove that's quite different than anything Deodato recorded before – and possibly never realized this perfectly again after his CTI years. Other players include Stanley Clarke on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, and Hubert Laws on flute – and titles include the massive Latin funk track "Super Strut", plus the tunes "Pavane For A Dead Princess", "Skyscrapers", and a great version of "Nights In White Satin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes cool poster. Cover has light aging inside the gatefold, but this is a great copy.)

An unusual early session from the great pianist Steve Kuhn – recorded in Paris in 1969, but with a much more structured vibe than some of the Actuel sessions at the time! Steve's definitely got an edge, though – as do group members Steve Swallow on bass and Alto Romano on drums – and titles include "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes", "Spring Can Really Hang You The Most", "Baubles, Bangles & Beads", "The Meaning Of The Blues", "All That's Left", "I Waited For You", and "Eiderdown". Zoot SimsSoprano Sax ... LP
Pablo, 1976. Near Mint- ... $9.99 11.99
A rare treat from Zoot Sims – an album of soprano sax material, recorded in striking contrast to his more familiar tenor! The sound is oddly more traditional than usual – and unlike many other players in the 70s, Sims doesn't use the soprano in a Coltrane-inspired mode, but in a way that takes it back to its roots in jazz from earlier years. And when we say "traditional", we don't really mean trad jazz, because Zoot's phrasing and overall use of the instrument still has a relatively modern feel – augmented certainly by the excellent recording quality of the album. The rest of the group features Ray Bryant on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Grady Tate on drums – and titles include "Wrap Up", "Bloos For Louise", "Someday Sweetheart", "Baubles Bangles & Beads", and "Willow Weep For Me". John WilliamsJohn Williams Trio (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
EmArcy (Japan), 1955. Used ... $14.99 18.99
Don't get this John Williams confused with the bigger-name soundtrack composer of later years – because this set is pure piano jazz all the way through, played by an artist who shined briefly with Stan Getz in the mid 50s! Although little-known, Williams is a great link between bop and mainstream piano jazz worlds at the time – and really sparkles on this session for Emarcy from the mid 50s – a record that goes way beyond simple standards and easy inflections – always voiced freshly by Williams in a mode that's modern, yet not self-consciously so. Rhythm is from Bill Anthony, Ernie Farrow, or Chuck Andrus on bass – and by Frank Isola or Jack Edie on drums. Titles include the originals "Shiloh", "Okeefenokee Holiday" – plus versions of "Manteca", "Like Someone In Love", "Baubles Bangles & Beads", and "Someday My Prince Will Come". CD

✨✧ Wes MontgomeryPretty Blue (Fusion plus trio material) ... LP
Riverside, 1959/1963. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A double-header of sweet-styled early work from Wes Montgomery! First up is the album Fusion – a pretty darn important record for Wes – as it was his first session with the sort of larger arrangements that would later make him huge! Although Montgomery was mostly recording for Riverside in small combos, this session has him playing in front of larger backings by Jimmy Jones – not as sublime as later work by Don Sebesky or Gil Evans, but done in a way that definitely shows that Wes can do a lot with the guitar when freed from the need to stick with the rhythm strongly. Titles include "All The Way", "Pretty Blue", "Somewhere", "God Bless The Child", "Tune Up", and "Baubles Bangles & Beads". Next up is a batch of ballads and late nite tunes from his trio recordings of 1963 – titles that include "Dreamsville", "Yesterday's Child", "For All We Know", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Too Late Now", "Whisper Not", and "For Heaven's Sake". Cherry Red (UK), Late 1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s/2010s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The legendary Prince was one of the all-time pop music powerhouses – an artist who seemed to record constantly, so much so that the world is just discovering all the music he left behind – and an equally energetic songwriter, so much so that he didn't always get a chance to record all of his many tunes! This fantastic set looks at this second half of Prince's legacy – and serves up a stunning array of Prince-penned tunes, performed by a variety of different artists – some as covers of his own recordings, and others as tunes that he generously gave to other singers to record! CD1 of the set features that part of his legacy – 18 tracks he let others record, with contributions from Rosie Gaines, Mica Paris, Nona Hendryx, Paula Abdul, Van Gogh, Martika, The Bangles, Andre Cymone, and Patti Labelle. CD2 features famous covers of Prince tunes – mostly by contemporaries who include Stephanie Mills, Valerie Carter, Corinne Bailey Rae, Passion, N'Dambi, Mellow Man Ace, Workshy, Crystal Waters, Princess & Starbreeze, and Joe Roberts. CD3 then features more covers, but also some other surprises too – with work from Dead Or Alive, Morgan James, Bilal, Sharon Jones, 7 Hurtz, Amanda Palmer, Maceo Parker, Dayna Kurtz, and Lambchop. The set features 52 tracks in all – and detailed notes on the wide variety of material within! CD

June's got rhythm, sure, but the real thing that makes her great is her dark and moody sense of melody! This album's one of June's late 50s efforts done with husband/arranger Bob Cooper – not as arch modern as some of her recordings with arranger Pete Rugolo, but still in a style that's definitely inspired by the classic work of albums like Something Cool and Off Beat. Backing is by a small group of LA jazzers – including Shelly Manne, Russ Freeman, Laurindo Almeida, Frank Rosolino, and Cooper – and titles include "My One & Only Love", "Blue Moon", "I Can Make You Love Me", "When Lights Are Low", and "Gypsy In My Soul". Resonance, 1968. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Never-heard studio work from the great Bill Evans – not another one of those many (and great) live performances from overseas – but a well-conceived, beautifully recorded set of tracks that were done for MPS Records in their famous studios in the Black Forest! The group here is Evans sublime trio with the great Eddie Gomez on bass and a young Jack DeJohnette on drums – perfect players for completely reworking the sound of the jazz piano trio, with all the new ideas that Bill had bursting forth at the time – and this material is the only studio session by the group, recorded right after their famous live appearance at Montreux in 1968 (documented on a well-known album on Verve.) The set's a double-length outing – recorded with the kind of crisp, clear sound that MPS brought to its other classic piano albums of the time by artists like Hampton Hawes or Tete Montoliu. The whole thing's wonderful – and Gomez has a wonderful presence in the mix – as the trio really shines on titles that include "Wonder Why", "Green Dolphin Street", "These Foolish Things", "Walkin Up", "Turn Out The Stars", "Very Early", "You Go To My Head", "Lover Man", and "Baubles Bangles & Beads". Pop, soul, and a whole lot more – all presented here in a set of 12" single mixes that really rocked the dancefloor back in the eighties! Apart from the underground scenes of hip hop and house, the decade also had a great moment where lots of styles criss-crossed in the clubs – and found a way to resonate together, thanks to the mixing power of the 12" single – a format that was arguably at its height during the 80s! This set hearkens back to those glory days – and presents a set of 30 tracks that include "Wishing (ext)" by Flock Of Seagulls, "State Of Shock (dance mix)" by The Jacksons, "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You (special 12" dance mix)" by Miami Sound Machine, "Stop To Love (12" mix)" by Luther Vandross, "Hitmix (official bootleg megamix)" by Alexander O'Neal, "Freeway Of Love (rock mix)" by Aretha Franklin, "Cuddly Toy (ext mix)" by Roachford, "Out Of Touch (club mix)" by Hall & Oates, "Hazy Shade Of Winter (purple haze clean mix)" by The Bangles, "She Bop (special dance mix)" by Cyndi Lauper, "See Those Eyes (dance mix)" by Altered Images, "Life In Tokyo (12" ext)" by Japan, "We Are Detectives" by Thompson Twins, "Fight For Ourselves (ext rmx)" by Spandau Ballet, "Hey Manhattan (JFK rmx)" by Prefab Sprout, "Go Wild In The Country (12" mix)" by Bow Wow Wow, "Eye Of The Tiger (special ext European version)" by Survivor, and "Medicine Show (ext rmx)" by Spandau Ballet. ✨✧ VariousWest Coast 1957 – Mode Jazz Lounge ... CD
Mode/Muzak (Japan), 1957. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A mighty nice dive into the legendary Mode Records catalog – that short-lived, but fantastic west coast jazz imprint of the 50s – a tiny label who cut some mighty great music during the year 1957! Mode was very much in the spirit of the Bethlehem label of the time, but more west coast overall – and they really helped push the scene's sound further by allowing artists a bit more space on their tunes, longer solos, and looser groups that really helped some of these all-star players shine in the best light possible! And although Mode soon went belly-up after issuing their initial run of records, the label has stayed at the top of the list for any fan of 50s postwar jazz – a legacy that's given great due here in a killer collection of 21 gems from the label. Titles include "Jazz Goes To Siwash" by Mel Lewis Sextet, "You Are Too Beautiful" by Warne Marsh Quartet, "How About You" by Lucy Ann Polk, "Stan Still" by Stan Levey Quintet, "Mediolistic" by Conte Candoli, "Evening In Paris" by Vic Feldman, "Long Ago And Far Away" by Herbie Harper Sextet, "Thou Swell" by Frank Rosolino, "Baubles, Bangles & Beads" by Flute Fraternity (Herbie Mann), "I Hadn't Anyone 'Til You" by Marty Paich Trio, and "Always" by Bobby Troup. ✨✧ Benny Carter with Oscar PetersonBenny Carter Meets Oscar Peterson (Pablo) ... LP
Pablo, 1986. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Benny Carter meets Oscar Peterson – two older giants from the Verve jazz scene of the 50s, recording here in loose quintet format three decades later! The album's got a format that's similar to some of the easy-flowing Verve dates from years back – no surprise, given that Norman Granz produced the set – and there's plenty of room for Carter's amazing tone on the alto to stretch out over mellow rhythms from Joe Pass on guitar, Dave Young on bass, and Martin Drew on drums. Titles include "Sweet Lorraine", "Just Friends", "Whispering", "Some Kind Of Blues", and "Baubles Bangles & Beads". LP, Vinyl record album
