✨✧ ADC BandFire Up/More & More Disco ... 12-inch
Atlantic, 1978. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
"Fire Up" is a great bit of party funk from ADC – a tune that's got a romping bassline that really sets the pace of the track – then follows up with a snapping rhythm that's got plenty of rollerskating touches, and which sounds great next to the stoner "fire it up" chorus! "More & More Disco" is more of a standard clubby number – but handled with nice horns and congas! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Promo in a stickered sleeve, with light wear and some marker. Labels have some marker.)

✨✧ Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big BandEuropean Memoirs (Ascent) ... LP
Ascent, 1982. Near Mint- ... $11.99
The Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big Band plays tribute to their experiences on the European scene – with a well-written set of tracks recorded in big band format. Toshiko takes the lead on "Remembering Bud", a great tune dedicated to the pianist who first inspired her style – and the rest of the group performs equally well on tracks that include "Feast In Milano", "Relaxing At Zell Am See", and "Two Faces Of A Nation (parts 1 & 2)". ✨✧ Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big BandKogun ... LP
RCA, 1974. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Brilliantly bold work from pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi – an artist who's really coming into her own for the 70s – stepping out in a big band format that would win her a wide new audience on both sides of the Pacific! The album's one of the first to feature the ensemble co-led with husband Lew Tabackin – a group that features strong work from American players who include Dick Spencer and Gary Foster on alto saxes, Tabackin and Tom Peterson on tenor, Bill Perkins on baritone, Bobby Shew and Don Rader on trumpets, and Charles Loper and Jim Sawyer on trombones. The horns are only part of the picture, though – as the inventive writing and arranging from Akiyoshi is what really makes the album great – a strong sense of painting with sound, while still keeping things swinging – really unlocking all the best elements that had been opened up for larger ensembles in the previous few years. The set features all original tracks that include "Kogun", "American Ballad", "Henpecked Old Man", "Elegy", and "Memory". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Cover has a promo stamp and an unglued top seam.)

✨✧ Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big BandRoad Time ... LP
RCA, 1976. Near Mint- 2LP ... Just Sold Out!
A great little live set from the glory days of the Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band – a series of performances from Japan, recorded in 1976, all featuring the ensemble at its best! The double-length nature of the record takes the group even farther than usual – really letting them stretch out with the kind of bold tones and broad colors that made the group so great. Soloists include Bobby Shew on trumpet, Jimmy Knepper on trombone, and Gary Foster on alto sax – alongside leaders Lew Tabackin on tenor and flute, and Toshiko Akioshi on piano. Titles include a nicely dancing reading of the classic "Warning: Success May Be Hazardous To Your Health" – plus "Kogun", "Henpecked Old Man", "Tuning Up", "Since Perry/Yet Another Tear", and "Soliloquy". Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandInsights ... LP
RCA, 1976. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Always-amazing work from the team of pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi and reedman Lew Tabackin – and a set that may well be one of the ensemble's most ambitious records to date – given that side two features a long, complicated suite that has roots in older Japanese musical styles! The balance here is great – side one has the kind of swinging shorter (although still long by most standards) numbers that the group could make explode with color and imagination – and side two features the long "Minamata" suite, which has vocals from a young Monday Michiru, and from singer Hisao Kanze. Other tracks include "Studio J", "Transience", and "Sumie" – and the lineup here features most of the group's key members of the 70s – including the great Gary Foster on reeds! LP, Vinyl record album

Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandLong Yellow Road ... LP
RCA, 1974. Very Good ... $4.99
A 70s classic from the team of Toshiko Akioshi and Lew Tabackin – a duo who did for the jazz ensemble mode in their generation what Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland did in the 60s! The material here is wonderfully inventive – the kind of compositions that Toshiko wouldn't have even written in her smaller combo years – fleshed out here by a fantastic group that includes Lew Tabackin and Gary Foster on reeds, and Bobby Shew and Don Rader on trumpets – all in a setting where the voices of the individual members really get a lot of space to shine! Titles include "Since Perry", "Opus No Zero", "Long Yellow Road", "First Night", "Children In The Temple Ground", and "Yet Another Tear". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandTales of A Courtesan (Oirantan) ... LP
RCA, 1976. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Toshiko Akiyoshi really took off as a jazz musician in the 70s – already a great pianist known for her bop-like dexterity in the 50s, a compelling soloist and songwriter with her modern sound in the 60s, and a hell of a talent at the helm of a series of amazing big band records with reedman Lew Tabackin! Akiyoshi emerges as a stunning composer, and a great arranger too – able to balance the individual solo voices of the members of the group, while also letting the whole thing open up and soar – bold colors that are cut through nicely by her own solo work in the set! In addition to saxes and flutes from Tabackin, the set also features more saxes from Gary Foster, Bill Perkins, and Dick Spencer – plus trombone from Bill Reichenbach and Britt Woman, and trumpets from Bobby Shew and Mike Price. All tunes are Akiyoshi originals – and titles include "Interlude", "Village", "Road Time Shuffle", and "Tales Of A Courtesan". LP, Vinyl record album

Alice Island BandSplendid Isolation ... LP
Warren/Wah Wah (Spain), 1974. Sealed ... $19.99
One of the more obscure outings from the British underground folk scene at the start of the 70s – a set that's way way different than contemporary work on the bigger labels, and which sounds as if it was conceived and recorded a fair bit away from the mainstream! The instrumentation is a mix of electric and acoustic guitar, electric bass, piano, and harmonium – with vocals by all three members of the trio, but in ways that are only partly harmonious – as some of the moments are more sung or spoken at cross-purposes – maybe with the energy of some of the madder parts of the Giles Giles & Fripp record, but more acoustic overall. Tunes were all penned by Roger Moore, who produced but doesn't play on the record – and titles include "Devil's Island", "Nickel Man", "Package Tour Mona Lisa", "Smoke", "Goodbye Cindy", and "The Man That I Am". Atlantic/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970s. New Copy ... $13.99
All the great cuts by Average White Band – on one CD! The Average White Band are a perfect choice for the Japanese Free Soul series – as their unique blend of funk, soul, and rock is very much in the spirit of tracks that appear on the other Free Soul various artists compilations. And sure, AWB have been adequately represented by American "best of" sets – but those usually focus on the big radio hits, and pass over some of the nicer LP tracks that have been keeping interest strong in the group over the years. Titles include "Just Wanna Love You Tonight", "Cut The Cake", "It's A Mystery", "School Boy Crush", "Work To Do", "Please Don't Fall In Love", "She's A Dream", "Love Your Life", "I'm The One", "If I Ever Lose This Heaven", "Queen Of My Soul", and "Pick Up The Pieces". Atlantic, 1976. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Sublime mid 70s work from The Average White Band – and a record that really has the group deepening their groove a bit – moving past the heavier funk of their roots, into some mellower grooves that are totally great! There's a great undercurrent of jazz in some of the playing here – a real consciousness for clever changes, hip instrumental flourishes, and some other fusion-inspired moments – although all delivered with an understated quality that's mighty nice. The feel's a bit like The Headhunters on their second album, or some of the great Wayne Henderson groups on Fantasy – a great mix of jazz funk and soul that makes the record one of our favorites by the group. Titles include "Sunny Days", "Digging Deeper", "Love Your Life", "Queen Of My Soul", and the stellar mellow "A Love Of Your Own". LP, Vinyl record album

A lean take on the double-length self-titled set from this mighty funky combo – one that brings together a range of great funky 45s, plus a few other hefty nuggets! If you don't know the group, they're totally great – as Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band go back to the funkiest moments of the 70s steel pan scene from the Caribbean – but also have a harder edge that comes from the group's ties to the Mighty Mocambos, and other corners of the deep funk universe! These cuts are funk first, steel drums second – and have a wicked groove that's actually hipper than most of the original steel drum records from back in the day. Titles include "Queen Of Cheeba", "Port Of Spain Hustle", "Tender Trap", "Dog Was A Doughnut", "Beetham Highway Ride", "Pimp", "Bacao Suave", "Jungle Fever", and "Tropical Heat". Funky genius from a mighty unique group – one who've drunk deep on the classic steel band sounds of the 70s, but who've also refined that groove with a contemporary funk approach too! The group's the brainchild of Bjorn Wagner – who you might know from The Mighty Mocambos – and the sound here is every bit as well-crafted as that combo, but with the difference of steel drums in the mix! The drums provide most of the melodic elements, while the funky backings kick things up nicely – all at a level that's maybe even funkier than some of the best funky steel drum albums of the 70s – especially across the space of the entire album. Maybe not the first album from the legendary Band – but a record in which the group get everything completely right all the way through – and sparkle with that special sound that continues to influence generations of music makers, and music lovers! All the great elements the group were bringing to their work with Bob Dylan are in place here – but the focus is completely different, with this warm glow that really fits the vocals of Levon Helm, and a sense of unified vision that makes it really hard to even come up with a match for the energy of the group on this album. The great John Simon adds a few special touches to the overall sound – and titles include "Rockin Chair", "Across The Great Divide", "When You Awake", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Look Out Cleveland", and "King Harvest". The landmark first album from The Band – and along with the follow-up, it's among the greatest records of its time – which is all the more astounding given how independent of late 60s trends it is! Each member of The Band brings such inimitable textures – Garth Hudson's imposing organ grooves, Richard Manuel's aching tenor vocals, Rick Danko's voice and distinctive bass lines, Levon Helm's behind-the-beat drumming and the country wisdom of his voice, Robertson's guitar mastery – this really was THE Band. The last true classic from the masters of the 80s groove genre – a post-Capitol effort for Elektra, but one that's still awash in great keyboards and snapping electro beats! Some of the jazzier sound from the past is gone here, but in its place is a leaner, cleaner sound that's still a fair bit more compelling than most work by the group's contemporaries! Nearly all tracks snap along with rhythms that are nicely placed between the street and the dancefloor – never gimmicky and never too cloying, and tightly focused enough to make the most of the hooks in the vocals. Lots of DX7 on the album, and more than a few numbers have a great sort of breakdance vibe. Tracks include "Riccochet" and "Dreamer" – both remixed by Shep Pettibone –"On The Shelf", "Genie", "Main Attraction", and "Don't Force It". Daptone, 2010. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A great third album from Staten Island instrumental funk titans The Budos Band – who've brought eclectic inspiration all along and have always colored from a much broader palette of styles than most of their peers – going even further this time out and delivering their best yet! The Daptone House Of Soul blueprint is a big part of the recipe, as it should be. Classic funky soul grit holds it all together and each cut has an unshakable groove, but with that in full effect, the group is free to explore. The Budos horns are as impeccable and communicative as ever, with brass that ranges from classic stateside funk and Afro influences. The percussion (bongos, clave, cowbell and more) is just as broadly thought out and tightly delivered, snakey bass lines, flute and the sometimes secret weapon on Budos Band III, the electric organ – which brings a bit of a garage psych/funk rock vibe. Truly exceptional work from the one of the best bands of their generation! Includes "Rite Of The Ancients", "Black Venom", "River Serpentine", "Unbroken, Unshaven", "Nature's Wrath", "Golden Dune's", "Budo's Dirge", "Raja Haje", "Crimson Skies", "Mark Of The Unnamed" and "Reppirt Yad" (a funked up Lennon/McCartney cover...read it backwards, kids). It's hard to believe that the Budos Band have been around long enough to give us five full albums – but along the way, they've also picked up plenty of power to add to their sound! This time around, the guitars seem even sharper than ever – full and fuzzy, and maybe even touched with some elements that might have made some of the bigger 70s groups weep – almost as if the BB are trying to create a whole new generation of prog funk in the process! All the other elements are still in place – lots of heavy drums, rumbling bass, and some mighty nice horns – but when mixed with the strength of the guitars, even the horns feel as if they're hitting some new currents – like when artists like Dick Heckstall Smith or Alan Skidmore might jam along with a funky guitar riff from way back. ✨✧ Butterfield Blues BandButterfield Blues Band Live ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1970. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A smoking live set from the Butterfield Blues Band – and like all the group's work, as much of a jazz and soul album as a blues one! Butterfield drew his inspiration from the Chicago bluesmen, it's true – but his style also has plenty of echoes of New Orleans soul, Memphis R&B, and other strands of American work – in a mode that's quite similar to some of the changes that were going on in the British beat group scene at the end of the 60s. The lineup here features some really nice touches on sax from Trevor Lawrence and Gene Dinwiddie – and the live setting only seems to loosen all the players up even more than usual, and let them hit a few nice funky moments. Titles include "Get Together Again", "Love Disease", "The Boxer", "No Amount Of Loving", "Driftin & Driftin", "Number Nine", and "Born Under A Bad Sign". CD

Rickey Calloway is one of the few singers we can say really inhabits the spirit of James Brown and gets the sound totally right – from his razor-sharp vocal approach on the lyrics, to the equally sharp sound of his group – as Calloway always seems to work with the best! "Do It On The One" moves and grooves like some late 60s King Records funky 45 – and although "Ain't It A Crime" has a different title, it's more of a "part 2" to the a-side – with plenty of guitar riffing and instrumental interplay from the group! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Past Due, Early 80s. New Copy ... $16.99
The overlooked legacy of the Chocolate Buttermilk Band – a long-running combo from the North Carolina scene – one who opened for or backed up some of the biggest soul artists to visit their state – then created some great music on their own! Make no mistake, these guys are way more than just a backing band – as their years of experience gave them some mighty sharp skills, with the kind of top-shelf large funk ensemble instrumentation that you'd expect to hear from a group on a much bigger label – not the kind who were releasing tracks on their own small imprint. The range of work here is also pretty great too – not just catchy funk tracks, but also some well-crafted mellower cuts and ballads thrown into the mix – really showing these guys as a fully-formed R&B act who might have broke bigger, had they gotten the chance. Titles include "Head Games", "Mr LSD", "Freaking", "Chills", "No Way", "Baby Don't Let Go", "Ain't No way", and "Can't Let Go". CD

MPS/Rearward (Italy), 1969. New Copy ... $18.99 24.98
A large group in a small club – the legendary Clarke Boland Big Band, playing at the home turf of one of their key members – tenorist Ronnie Scott! The set features a very legendary performance by the ensemble – a crack lineup that's easily one of the best ever sported by the CBBB – perfectly mixing American rhythms, and a trans-Atlantic lineup of soloists – all tied together with just the sort of rich arrangements that make the group so great! Things groove right from the get-go – thanks to a rhythm lineup that features Kenny Clarke on drums, and Francy Boland on piano – plus bassist Ron Matthewson, sitting in for the usual Jimmy Woode. The horn players really send things off, though – tight trumpets from Benny Bailey, Idrees Sulieman, and Dusko Goykovich; bold trombones from Ake Persson and Nat Peck; and some searing reed lines from Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Scott on tenor, Derek Humble on alto, Sahib Shihab on baritone, and Tony Coe on both tenor and clarinet. This CD features both the first and second sets at Scotts by the group – albums titled Volcano and Rue Chaptal – with titles that include "Volcano", "Griff's Groove", "Now Hear My Meanin", "Box 703 Washington DC", "Thence We Issued Out Again to See the Stars", "Rue Chaptal", "I Don't Want Nothin From Nobody & I Ain't Giving Nothin Away", "Sax No End", "Minor Blues", and "The Girl & The Turk". Great all the way through, with loads of tight short cuts like "The Turk", "Milkshake", "November Girl", "Peter's Waltz", and "New Box". CBS/Bread & Wine, 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99 21.98
A beautiful little record from the glory days of the acid folk scene in the UK – a set served up by Clive Palmer, who you might know from work in Incredible String Band and Wizz Jones – sounding even more enigmatic here at the helm of a trio who were produced by the legendary Ralph McTell! The style is light years from the more traditional sounds of some of Ralph's music – very moody and dark, with instrumentation that comes from guitar, recorder, and a variety of other instruments – including the unusual dulcitar, which was invented by trio member John Bidwell! Lead vocals are from Clive and Mick Bennett – alternating on different tracks, and harmonizing with a very eerie vibe, one that's further expanded by the unusual production modes too. A few tracks add in other elements, but just lightly – really keeping the solitary, spooky vibe of the record intact. Titles include "Evening Air", "Serpent's Kiss", "Wade In The Water", "Soft Touches Of Love", "Music Of The Ages", Spirit Of Love", and "Sweet Slavery". LP, Vinyl record album

Universal (Japan), Late 90s/Early 2000s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A sweet collection of funk from this ultra-cool Japanese combo – all hand-picked, and served up in a special mix by DJ Muro! Crazy Ken Band have an odd name, but a warmly soulful take on funk that began in the pre-Daptone years, and which maybe shares more with the funk revival modes on the London scene at the start of the 90s – especially as the group have some of the warmer currents of Incognito or Brand New Heavies! But there's also a harder funk approach on some numbers – really sharp instrumentation that works equally well with blasting horns or warmer modern soul grooves – almost always topped with lead lyrics in Japanese. Most of their work was only issued overseas, so this collection's a great place to start with their music, especially with Muro in the lead! CD features 25 titles, most listed in Japanese – but with tracks that include "Brand New Honda", "El Diablo", "Midnight Cruiser", "Lady Mustang", and "Punch Punch Punch". CD

A real shift in sound for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – as the group drop the "nitty gritty" for their name, and go for a well-rounded sound that shows off their songwriting in a very different way! There's little of the rootsy elements of Will The Circle Be Unbroken here – as the group warm things up in more of an AOR style, yet still include some acoustic elements too – almost going for a mix of country roots and more polished crossover modes, with a sound that's more in keeping with their LA roots than most of their other 70s records. Yet taken from the perspective of a mainstream record, the songwriting and execution are great – definitely a cut above – and titles include "You Can't Stop Loving Me Now", "Whoa Babe", "Escaping Reality", "For A Little While", "Lights", and "Wild Nights". Columbia, Late 60s/1975. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
Dylan & The Band's legendary Basement Tapes – those amazing late 60s Woodstock recordings – and an album that was a classic long before it was officially released in the mid 70s! Bootleg after bootleg of some these recordings might have sold enough copies on the grey market in the early 70s to go platinum back in the day, so there's little wonder that Columbia would finally get some kind of official release out there – and it lives up to the legend! Dylan's conversational, seemingly spontaneous lyricism stretches over a good portion of it, with some much more soulful numbers, too – and those are all the more effective with The Band's incredible instrumentation, backing and occasional lead vocals. Includes "Odds And Ends", "Million Dollar Bash", "Tears Of Rage", "Tiny Montgomery", "Nothing Was Delivered", "Too Much Of Nothing", "Clothes Line Saga", "You Ain't Goin Nowhere", "Open The Door, Homer", "This Wheel's On Fire, "Crash On the Levee (Down In The Flood)", "Long Distance Operator". The African artists contribute a lot of vocals and work on kora that's especially beautiful – and the other players are led by Gregg Middleton on bass, who also does all the arrangements – and the combo features Ernie Fields on saxes, Nolan Smith on trumpet, and Fred Wesley on trombone! Heavy funk from the Indy scene of the late 60s – the lost album by one of the funkiest combos in the Midwest! Ebony Rhythm Band have an incredible sound that seems to take the heavy bottom of New Orleans Funk and merge it with the trippier elements of Detroit psychedelic soul – no surprise, considering they hailed from Indianapolis, a point about halfway between the two cities! The tracks on the set have a really great tripped-out groove – using lots of guitar and organ over heavy rhythms, in a style that's a bit like the Meters at times – but a lot freer flowing. The album features 2 tracks that formed the basis of one of the group's singles – plus a lot more that were never issued at the time, including a few by other incarnations of the combo! Titles include "Soul Heart Transplant", "Ode To Billie Joe", "Light My Fire", "Vanilla Fudge", "Get Yourself Together", "Drugs Ain't Cool", "Fool Am I", and "It's Too Late For Love". Smoke Sessions, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 17.99
Orrin Evans is a hell of a pianist, but he's also a hell of a bandleader too – stepping out here with his excellent Captain Black Big Band – an always-great unit that shows off a whole new dimension of Evans' mighty talents! The music is rich and bold right from the start – and clearly, the leader is much more of a mutual participant in the proceedings than the boss – as the horns alone have these individual flourishes and power as a whole that's really amazing – a sense of color and richness that's very distinct from Orrin's piano, and which maybe gets even more presence in the mix. Players include Todd Bashore, Immanuel Wilkins, and Caleb Wheeler Curtis on alto saxes; Josh Lawrence, Sean Jones, and Thomas Marriott on trumpets; David Gibson, Reggie Watkins, and Stafford Hunter on trombones; Troy Roberts on tenor; Stacy Dillard on soprano; Luques Curtis and Madison Rast on bass; Jason Brown and Mark Whitfield Jr on drums; and Evans on piano. We love the music of pianist Orrin Evans in many different ways – but we especially love the sounds he makes with his Captain Black Big Band – a really tremendous ensemble that seems to unlock a whole new dynamic energy in his performance! The group here is heavy on horns – two trumpets, two trombones, alto and tenor – shifting a bit throughout the concert here, and really rising wonderfully from the energy that Evans brings on piano! Orrin's sense of sound is beautiful – bold, rich, and visionary – while also still allowing plenty of room for the individual players to really do their thing – as the long tracks here are awash in great solos that have as much power on their own as the ensemble. Rhythm is from Madison Rast on bass and either Anwar Marshall or Jason Brown on drums – and titles include "Trams", "Flip The Script", "Onward", "Question", "The Scythe", and "Answer". CD

Quite possibly the last really hard-hitting funk album from The Fatback Band – and although their first record on the Event label, a set that cooks every bit as hard as their first few for Perception! The style here is funky 45 soul at its best – lots of hard crackling drums, funky rumpling bass, and enough choppy guitar to level a whole forest in one swoop! Lyrics are part of most numbers, but they're often in the bad-rapping or call and response mode of the People Music album – except for a few sweeter numbers which also sound pretty nice too! "Keep On Stepping" is a great little funky number – as are "Wicky Wacky", "Mr. Bass Man", and "New York Style". We also love the sweet soul track "Love", which has some great vocals, a great hook, and which sounds like a tune from their Feel My Soul LP! The music has the same smooth, soulful Hawaiian groove as Kalapana's records – but there's a more personal vibe to these tunes, and you can feel that Mackey's really putting himself into the music – serving up these heartfelt lyrics with a down to earth vibe – and getting just a bit of AOR production alongside the already-warm approach of the tunes. Golden Pavilion (Portugal), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99
An insane little record that sounds even wilder than you might guess from the cover – and given that image, that's really saying a lot! The set's kind of a freeform mix of psychedelic rock and sex sounds – recorded in a single day in a Dutch studio with the help of some local prostitutes – who really add a lot to the music! Some of the sounds are as groovy and sexy as you might expect – but other times the whole thing verges much more into noise, with both the guitars and the voices coming across more as if they're being tortured than pleasured – which makes for one mighty strange record. Supposedly, the original pressing of 300 copies was given away to the ladies who helped participate in the session – and although the record might not be one that you'll play every morning before work, it's certainly a fascinating audio document from a very freewheeling generation. Capitol, 1969. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A jangle-pop spectacular from The Five Man Electrical Band – an incredibly groovy outfit from late 60s Canada! Although issued at the end of the 60s, the album's got a sweetly-crafted feel that sounds a lot like some of the best mid 60s pop – particularly that coming from overseas – almost a lost Brit Invasion sort of sound, but one that's tuned with a few odder touches that show the group's ear for some of the west coast musical changes of the time. All tunes are incredibly catchy, and recorded with great focus on the jangly lead guitar – so much so that the vocals are almost buried down a bit more in the mix, which makes for a kind of cooly tripped-out sound. Titles include "Maple Lane", "Fancy Dancin Man", "Black Sheep Of The Family", "Running Back", "Didn't Know The Time", "Five Man Electrical Band", and "Private Train". Total Experience/BGO (UK), Late 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $10.99 19.99
A pair of late 80s gems from the Gap Band – back to back, with bonus tracks too! First up is Gap Band 8 – very sharp work from The Gap Band – working confidently in a mid 80s boogie soul mode with a couple of solid slow jams and that funky synthesizer groove which they had pretty much perfected by this point! The Gap Band's way of inflecting easygoing 80s soul and more ballad-y numbers with funky synth and bass, as well as diverse styles of percussion is a big piece of the pie at this point in their career – as is the supremely catchy songwriting. Definitely an overlooked Gap Band effort worth revisiting! Includes "Big Fun", "I Can't Live Without Your Love", "Get Loose, Get Funky", "Don't Take It Away", "I'll Always Love You", "Bop B Da Da (How Music Came About)", "I Owe It To Myself" and more. Straight From The Heart is great work from the later, leaner sound of the Gap Band – a time when the group were working with a bit more programming than before, but still very much in the funky soul territory of their roots! Like contemporaries Cameo, Gap Band were able to make a great shift into the electro soul generation – one that maybe even got them greater fame than in the early years – almost as if their initial impulses were waiting for the 80s funk generation to really find the right sort of sound for their groove! The whole album's rock-solid – filled with tunes that should have been hits – and titles include "Come & Dance", "All The Way Yours", "I'm So Satisfied", "You Told Me That", and "Straight From The Heart". 2CD set features six bonus tracks from Gap Band 8 – "Big Fun (mega mix)", "Zibble Zibble (dub-zibble money mix)", "I Owe It To Myself (rmx)", "Big Fun (Bandolero mix)", "Big Fun (serious dub mix)", and "Bop B Da B Da Da (ext version)". BGO (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
A pair of early 80s classics from the Gap Band – back to back in a single set! First up is Gap Banc IV – perhaps the ultimate album for The Gap Band – and sure, it was a hit, but the record still sounds great today, and the constant sampling of some of the record has kept it fresh in the crates for years and years! The band have lost the heavier funk sound of earlier years, and working in a slick 80s groove mode that they both helped to define and put on the charts with the tracks "Outstanding" and "Early In The Morning", both two killer grooves with a complicated instrumental feel, and some wicked harmony vocals over the top. Lonnie Simmons is still producing the band – and other tracks include "Lonely Like Me", "Stay With Me", "Talkin Back", and "You Dropped A Bomb On Me". On the second album, the Gap Band are definitely Jammin – hitting that fierce funk mode they do so well, with lots of snapping lines at the bottom of the rhythms! The style is trademark Gap all the way through – a percolated approach to funk that's tight, but never too slick – in a groove that's different than some of their other mainstream counterparts at the time – hard to describe accurately, but almost with a touch of jazz in the mix! Charlie Wilson handles most of the lead vocals, with support from brothers Robert and Ronnie – and Ronnie produced most of the set. Titles include "Where Are We Going", "Shake A Leg", "Jam The Motha", "Someday", "You're Something Special", "I'm Ready", "You're My Everything", "Smile", and "Jammin In America". CD also features the bonus track "Party Train (special dance mix)". CD

And even though you may think by the instrument and the scene you may be able to guess the sound, don't count on it – because there's a tremendous amount of surprises here – thanks to key contributions on arrangements from group members Jerry Cournoyer and Danny Patiris, both of whom work with Gonsalves to blow apart the tunes and make for some plenty interesting solo space. Titles include "Sunday Kind Of Love", "Stablemates", "Moment's Notice", "Steresis", "Little Melonae", "Sharon",a nd "Oasis". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red label stereo Omega pressing with deep groove. Cover has a half split top seam.)

Governor's State University Jazz BandGovernor's State University Jazz Band Live ... LP
Governor's State University/P-Vine (Japan), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 About November 24, 2021 (delayed)
A really wonderful album of obscure jazz recordings from the Chicago scene of the 70s – way more than just the usual school band record, as the tracks here are mostly originals, and performed by a very inventive group of musicians! Governor's State University was a very hip place at the time – a public college at the end of the main train line running through the south side of Chicago – which made the school a place of great opportunity and expression for the city's African-American community. Rather than a junior college, GSU had higher levels of learning – and had an especially strong jazz program, as you'll hear in this set – which features both sextet performances and work by a larger ensemble – both imbued with some of the best creative legacy of the Chicago scene. Things never go far outside, but there's definitely a deeper understanding of musical reaches taking place here – and the core quartet features Walter Henderson on cornet, John Pate on piano, Eugene Vineyard on tenor, Ronald Askew on guitar, Jeff Simon on bass, and Curtis Prince on drums. These players are in the larger group – which also features William Howell and Gerald Myrow on trombones, Vincent Carter and Steele Seales on saxes, and Kenneth Brass and Melvin Williams on trumpets. Titles include "Crabmeat", "Song For Suzanne", "Keishaz", "Give It One", "Listen Here", and "Spanish Samba". LP, Vinyl record album

PMG (Austria), 1981. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
A wonderful fusion of traditional roots and contemporary funk – handled perfectly by this legendary Gambian band! The groove is unique – with earthy percussion and haunting vocals mixed with more 70s-styled funk instrumentation – but often in a way that's as interested in sonic experimentation as it is in search of a groove – an approach that really sets these guys apart from most of their contemporaries, and which has made the Guelewar Band's records get some great attention in recent years. The group call their approach "Afro-Manding Sound" – and titles include "Warteef Jigeen", "NTC The Gambia", "Mamadu Bitike", "President Diawara", and "Jilanna". CD

Analog Africa (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $17.99 18.99
Early work Zimbabwe legends Hallelujah Chicken Run Band – a group that was an early showcase for the vocal talents of the equally legendary Thomas Mapfumo! The set's not just a Mapfumo showcase, though – as the sound here resonates strongly from the whole group – nice harmonies on many tracks – and completely wicked guitars – which often have a rhythmic, spindly, "plucked" electric groove inspired by the mbira – a sound that was enormously influential and will sound fresh forever! Those great guitar parts come from Joshua Hlomayi Dube and Elisha Josam – inspired by the mbira music that was so important at the time – and Mapfumo plays drums, too – plus many tracks have additional horns other elements from a loose group of fellow players. The set features some early material that was produced for the Teal label, and later 70s work – all of it warm, melodic and welcoming – and the sound quality is really great! Titles include "Mudzimu Ndiringe", "Kare Nanhasi", "Manheru Changamire", "Tamba Zimba Navashe", "Mutoridodo", "Sekai", "Gore Iro", "Tinokumbira Kuziva", and "Chaminuka Mukuri". CD

✨✧ Heads Funk BandHard World ... CD
PMG (Austria), 1975. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
Great work from this cool Nigerian funk combo of the 70s – a group who bore strong ties to the equally-great Akwassa, and who work here with an equally righteous groove! Lyrics are mostly in English, and have some political currents that give the music a social sort of edge – but the real charm comes from the music, which is tight, funky, and filled with loads of wicked basslines that bump and groove along with the riffing guitar and organ lines! There's a spareness here that's a real difference from some of the bigger Afro Funk ensembles you might know from the time – as Heads Funk Band is really just a quartet, but manages to make a mightily massive sound. Titles include "Hot Punk", "Hard World", "Can You Do It", "Money Makes You Happy", "Got To Love", and "Egbe Bere Ogo Bere". CD

Elektra, 1967. Very Good ... $34.99
The second album from Incredible String Band – and incredible it is, a UK psychedelic folk gem that finds the group challenging conventions across the board – both artful and inviting, it's wonderful stuff! At this point, Clive Palmer had left, and Mike Heron and Robin Williamson contribute lead vocals with the additional vocalist Licorice also taking lead on a few tunes, the sound is fleshed out with more accompaniment and a rich warmth on a bevy of instruments – guitar, sitar, bowed gimbri, finger cymbals, tamboura, oud, rattles, flute, bass and piano. Includes the lovely and oft-covered "The First Girl I Loved", plus "Chinese White", "No Sleep Blues", "Painting Box", "The Eyes Of Fate", "The Hedgehog's Song", "You Know What I Could Be", "Gently Tender", "Way Back In The 1960s" and more. ✨✧ Invisible Man's BandReally Wanna See You ... LP
Boardwalk, 1981. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
A great later effort from the 5 Stairsteps family – a later offshoot of the initial enterprise, still working here under the production helm of father Clarence Burke! Keni Burke's a member of the group, and the work here has a very similar groove to his own RCA material of the time – offset with some warmer elements that also echo the previous Stairsteps records on Warner, especially given that a number of the cuts have group vocals. Keni's bass does a nice job of kicking in the grooves, and the album's got a nicely warm sound for the time – almost more late 70s group funk than early 80s boogie. Titles include the sweet harmony track called "Along The Way" – plus "Party Time", "Circles", "Rated X", "Really Wanna See You", and "Same Thing". LP, Vinyl record album

Kashmere Stage BandKashmere Stage Band Plays Originals (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Kashmere Records/P-Vine (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... $26.99
An all-original set from the Kashmere Stage Band – one of the funkiest combos going in early 70s Texas! The album features a range of tunes written by bandleader Conrad Johnson – all hard-hitting numbers that take off from the group's roots as a funkier high school band, and which show their evolution into an even more jazz-inflected outfit! The sound here is very much in the mode of blacksploitation soundtrack work – as the compositions are filled with light and color, and have a richness that goes far beyond funky 45 work – but a groove that's stone cold all the way through. Titles include "Thunder Soul", "Do You Dig It Man", "Kashmere", "Head Wiggle", and "All Praises". CD

A bold statement from the Kashmere Stage Band – who've definitely got their own "thing" here right from the start – one of the coolest, grooviest, funkiest sounds you'll ever hear from a band of young kids in school! These guys easily match the hippest players in much more mature ensembles – and often even have a vibe that sounds a lot like the best blacksploitation funk of the time, or some of the funky big band work from overseas – driven on by a really strong sense of rhythm, and marked with some wonderful solos on tenor, trumpet, alto sax, and piano – plus great guitar from Johnny Reason! Titles include great remakes of "Burning Spear" and "Ode To Billie Joe" – plus "Boss City", "Take Five", "Summertime", and "Misty". CD

When these guys say "stage band", they aren't kidding – as the group's got so many members, there's barely room left on the stage for the instruments! That doesn't stop the record from being plenty darn funky, though – as the sound is right, tight, and outta site – every bit as great as the group's famous funky 45s, and with a similarly hard Texas take on deep funk! The album's got some wonderful covers of famous soul hits, plus a few hip originals – and there's some great moments that show the group hitting a more ambitious jazzy feel, one that recalls some of the hipness of the Chicago sound of The Pharoahs! Titles include "Al's Tune", "Scorpio", "Masquerade", "Walk On By", "All Praises", "Thank You", "Do Your Thing", and "To All The Beautiful Black Women". CD

Emporium/PMG (Austria), 1974. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
A wicked bit of funk from Ghana – a record that's as amazing and wonderful as it is rare! The set's one of the best African 70s rarities we've ever heard – filled with massive grooves that offer up a take on funk that's far different than American grooves – but which also comes across with instrumentation that's not as familiarly Ghanian either! There's lots of nicely fuzzy organ in the mix, tight rhythms, and a trippy production style that no doubt comes from the quality of the original studio – but which serves to give some of the best cuts a really sinister edge – a bit like Cymande at their best. Titles include "Dracular Dance", "No Man Is Born To Suffer", "Moving World", "Groovy Love", "Wale Fobite", "Kelenkye Beat", and "Jungle Music". CD

A really great record from the Kondi Band – one of the few groups who can manage to combine the sound of the kalimba with more contemporary styles – and somehow make the whole thing come off without feeling like a gimmick! Sorie Kondi handles both the thumb piano and lead vocals – and the tunes often have a lean blend of contemporary club rhythms, keyboards, and some earthier instrumental elements – with acoustic moments balanced out very nicely next to the more electric ones, so that there's a really organic sound to the record, and not a facile "world remix" sort of style! Timeless (Netherlands), 1983. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
More recent than Machito's classic recordings, but done with a tight adherence to jazz that really makes the album sparkle! In a way, this set's much more of a no-nonsense Latin jazz affair than many of Machito's sides from the late 50s, 1960s, or 70s – as he's got kind of a back to basics approach that features many jazz solos over hard-hitting Latin rhythms, in the manner of his early cubop work for Verve. Tracks are mostly long – and titles include "Buscando La Melodia", "Sopa De Pincho", "Guaguanco", "Ronnie Scott Mambo", and "Guantanamera Pensativa". LP, Vinyl record album
