Googie Rene ComboWham Bam! – The Best Of The Googie Rene Combo ... CD
Class/Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Rough and funky piano from Googie Rene – one of the hippest cats on the LA scene of the 50s and 60s! Googie first got his start laying down boogie-styled R&B numbers, but as the 60s moved in, Googie moved onto a whole new batch of grooves – picking up bits of beatnik jazz, soundtrack themes, and even early funky combo grooving! This excellent set's one of the first to look at Googie's genius – and pulls together a host of hard-hitting piano based numbers – originally recorded for the tiny Class and Rendezvous labels, and spanning the decade from 1956 to 1966. 26 tracks in all, with titles that give you a great idea of the grooves – "Wiggle Tail (parts 1 & 2)", "Skumbo", "Bossa Baby", "Flapjacks (parts 1 & 2)", "Sunrise", "The Slide (parts 1 & 2)", "Smokey Joe's La La", "Chica Boo", "Mercy Mercy", and "Soul Zone". ✨✧ George FreemanFranticdiagnosis ... LP
Bam-Boo, 1972. Near Mint- ... $16.99
A legendary bit of funk – and a killer record from one of the most unique guitarists ever! George Freeman's got a sound and a style unlike any other player we can think of – an approach to funky guitar that's often got a really hard touch on the strings, and which gets nice and noisy at the best funky moments. Freeman's probably best known for the few obscure records he cut with Groove Holmes, but this album's his out and out masterpiece – a rare one-off session cut in the funky Philly scene and supervised by DJ Sonny Hopson – and featuring a rare mix of players that includes Cesar Frazier on organ and Charles Earland on Arp! The mix of organ and Arp is really incredible – especially on the side-long jammer "Franticdiagnosis", which runs for nearly 20 minutes, and is one of the most messed-up funky jazz jams of the 70s! Other players include Von Freeman on tenor sax and Dave Hubbard on alto flute – and the album features the legendary jazz dance track "The Bump", plus the cuts "Free-Man" and "God Bless The Child". Disques Bam/Cacophonic (France), Mid 50s. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $6.99
Incredible sounds from the postwar avant scene in France – a small record, but one that's had huge impact over the years! This 3 track EP features compositions based around the "structures sonores" of Jacques Lasry and Bernard Baschet – both of whom create and play these amazing Harry Partch-esque instruments that are part sculpture, part percussive tools – very groundbreaking at the time, and still pretty amazing after all these years. Even more than the instruments, though, the high point of the album is the way that the orchestrations and sonic structures work together – as the whole thing feels like an otherworldly batch of space songs that recalls some of Moondog's work, and some of the other early Musique Concrete composers from the 50s. Tracks include "La Mort Du Clown", "La Danse Du Resort" and "Bolide". 7-inch, Vinyl record

CongosHeart Of The Congos ... LP
VP, 1976. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A classic slice of Jamaican roots – and an essential record from the godlike hands of Lee Perry! The set was produced by Perry at Black Ark – and instantly became the stuff of legend, even though the initial version of the album got very limited exposure – which has led to years of differing reissues and versions of the record! Yet the core sound is always very much in place, no matter what the setting – very spiritual lyrics from the group themselves, set to nicely stripped-down rhythms and instrumentation that are a great contrast to the wave of more polished international reggae releases that were garnering mainstream attention at the time. The lasting power of the set is proof that maybe when it comes to roots, you've got to really go to the roots to get it right – as you'll hear on classic tracks that include "La La Bam Bam", "Fisherman", "Congoman", "Children Crying", "Open Up The Gate", and "The Wrong Thing". A really funked-up batch of dancefloor tunes – produced with a uniquely cross-cultural approach! Ze Records diva Lizzy Mercier Descloux works here with influential post-disco, post-punk producer Steve Stanely – on a set of tunes cut in Nassau, with some great backing by a combo that includes Wally Badarou on keyboards. The resulting groove takes the skittish pan-club sound of the early 80s Ze Records scene, and infuses it with the hippest take on Jamaican rhythms of the time – resulting in a groundbreaking batch of tunes that were years ahead of their time! We're never actually sure of the date of this material – and the lack of notes on the cover is no help – but we can say that the recordings are prime Diz, cut in the height of his bop years, hard grooving with a lot of pyrotechnics, a bit of vocalization, and a great sense of humor! Titles include classics like "He Beeped When He Shoulda Bopped", "Groovin High", "Dizzy Atmosphere", "Ray's Idea", "Oop Bob Sh'bam", "That's Earl's Brother", and "One Bass Hit". ✨✧ Clyde McPhatterClyde (Japanese pressing) ... LP
Atlantic, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
We'll be the first to admit that for years, we never forgave Clyde McPhatter for leaving The Drifters – but as time has gone on, hearing records like this really have made us appreciate his greatness on his own! The record's a non-stop testament to McPhatter's vocal talents – a perfect display of his unique way of singing, and the way that it helped pave the way for countless soul artists to come in the 60s. Backings are all in the best Atlantic Records R&B mode of the 50s – rough sometimes, a bit warmer at others. This is an unusual Japanese pressing, part of an 80s series which used original covers, but added estra tracks – so this one features 14 titles that include "A Lover's Question", "Since You've Been Gone", "Lovey Dovey", "Bip Bam", "Come What May", "Love Has Joined Us Together", and "No Love Like Her". Doctor Bird (UK), 1966. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
One of the most unusual albums on the legendary Treasure Isle label – issued here with 46 bonus tracks too! Independence Jump Up Calypso is one of the most unusual records Duke Reid ever released – a set of mento, not rocksteady or ska – not entirely calypso, but with a similar groove – and issued here in a slightly-late 1966 package to celebrate Jamaica's split from the UK! The tracks are mostly by two key artists, and have a nice raw groove that's similar to other Treasure Isle productions – plenty of currents of jazz in the horns, romping rhythms, and lyrics that are a key precursor to the way that vocals would play out later in reggae. Titles include "Jump Independently", "The Weed", "Bam Bam", "Mulfridite", and "Hooligans" by Count Lasher – and "In The Park", "Hard Times", and "Old Man's Drive" by Count Alert – plus instrumentals "Seven Guns Alive" and "Dog War Jump Up" by Lynn Taitt & The Baba Brooks Band. CD also features a huge amount of other Treasure Isle/Duke Reid rarities – ska, rocksteady, and instrumental singles – from The Sensations, Baba Brooks Band, The Miracles, The Upsetters, Tommy McCook, The Silvertones, Lynn Tait, Joey & Butch, Tony & Dennis, Eric Morris, Herman Marquis, and many others. ✨✧ Dandelion SetThousand Strands – 1975 to 2015 ... CD
Buried Treasure (UK), 2015. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
There's a date range listed on the cover that stretches back to the 70s – not the actual age of the music on this set, but instead a way of indicating the decades worth of inspiration drawn upon by The Dandelion Set – especially the cooler post-psych elements of the UK scene in the 70s, and some of the trippier psych revival sounds of the following decade! These guys might have been right at home on Bam Caruso or early Creation Records – and share a similar love of the weirder, offbeat qualities of the late 60s – blending fuzzy performance with equally freaky production – using light touches of funk or analogue electronics along the way. Tracks on the record work together to create a very vivid audio scene – one that's echoed by the equally trippy liner notes by Alan Moore – and titles include "Harps Ascend", "Cosmic Flux History", "Tone Garden", "Pristina Strawberry Girl", "Redherringbone", "A Rasher Of Wind", "Gardense", and "The Third Programme". Chess, 1974. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A lost classic in the funky poetry mode of the 70s – and right up there with the best work from the time by the Last Poets, Jim Ingram, or Gil Scott Heron! Bama's got a rough-edged voice that works very well with the funkier backings of the set – handled by a team that includes Bernard Purdie on drums, Richard Tee on keyboards, and Cornell Dupree on guitar – and this rough vocal style also fits the themes of the tunes, which are still as political and righteous as other work in the genre, but a bit more down to earth as well. The music itself was arranged and composed by Jimmy Wizner and Billy Jackson – and titles include "Ghettos Of The Mind", "The Right To Be Wrong", "Nothingness", "Drunken Sister", "I Got Soul", "Welfare Slave", "Social Narcotics", and "Blackman, My Brother". The Bamboos really take the "special arrangement" here seriously – as the record has the group moving way past their funk combo roots, to work in a set of large orchestral arrangements that really transform their sound! If anything, the record's a lot more soulful than recent releases – as the larger charts are used to flesh out the vocals in this wonderful way – evoking the complexity of classic soul recordings on Atlantic and Chess by the likes of Arif Mardin or Charles Stepney – while also keeping things fresh and contemporary, partly thanks to a range of singers who include the group's frequent partner Kylie Auldist, plus Dan Sultan, Washington, and Tim Rogers. Ross Irwin arranged the whole thing – and is clearly a key force in the group's sound here – and titles are a mix of covers and remakes of older Bamboos classics – titles that include "The Truth", "Keep Me In Mind", "I Got Burned", "I Don't Wanna Stop", "Stranded", "Strong", and "Eliza". Don't let the cheesy 80s cover of this album put you off, because the album's got a classic Fania All-Stars groove all the way through – and is quite possibly one of the last great sessions by the combo! The title cut "Bamboleo" is the group's great version of the Gypsy Kings hit – almost their attempt to say "hey buddy, long before you cracked the charts, we were THE international Latin act". And to follow it up, the All Stars return to some of their early 70s modes of blending in more familiar soul tunes with their salsa vibe – taking on both "Don't You Worry About A Thing" and "Smooth Operator", and managing to come up with great versions of both. Francisco Navarro plays some great guitar on the record – and other tracks include "Quiero Saber", "Djobi Bjoba", and "Siento". LP, Vinyl record album

Chulo, 2016. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Hard-driving Latin from Los Hacheros – a group of younger players who really get the sound of the classic era down perfectly – mixing Cuban roots, descarga jamming, and some really wonderful vocal refrains throughout! Instrumentation is heavy on percussion, and the grooves feature lots of bold lines on tres – which brings a nice edge to the record, especially alongside some of the sweeter moments on flute or violin – although those instruments can also be used in more driving ways at times too. Titles include "Las Nieves De Brooklyn", "Bambulaye", "Pintate", "Timbalaye", "Descarga Para Abe", and "Quiera Madre". LP, Vinyl record album

King/Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
60s jazz meets Japanese bamboo flute – all in a session with a great mix of groovy and exotic touches! The record's a unique meeting of jazz and folkloric elements – done in a style that's a bit like some of the late 60s sessions of this nature on MPS, but a fair bit groovier overall – as the tracks are shorter and more focused, and often have a nice sort of bounce at the bottom. Flute is by Minoru Muraoka, and arrangements are by Takashi Ikeda and Kozaburo Yamaki, conducting their New Dimension and New Emotion groups respectively. Bits of sitar bring in an even groovier sound to the record – and the flute itself has some oddly off-kilter notes that further trip out the tunes. Titles include "Soul Bamboo", "Take Five", "The Positive & The Negative", "Call Me", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Scarborough Fair". CD

Mickey MurrayShout Bamalama – And Other Super Soul Songs ... LP
SSS International, Late 60s. Sealed ... $19.99
A little bit funk, a little bit soul – Mickey Murray was one of the underrated talents working in the SSS label during the company's glory years, and had a sock-hard southern soul style that was really outta site! Mickey first hit big with the tune "Shout Bamalama" – originally recorded by Otis Redding in his earliest years in the studio, but pushed to much bigger fame by Mickey with his classic late 60s recording. This tasty little set is done in a great mix of upbeat sockin-soul and mellower southern burners – all carried off with a depth and level of quality that should have made Mickey a bigger star at the time! Titles include the massively funky "Hit Record", plus "How many Breaks Can One Heart Take", "Got You On My Mind", and the eerie "Lonely Room". LP, Vinyl record album

Mongo SantamariaMr Watermelon Man – La Bamba ... LP
Columbia, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Mongo Santamaria at the height of his Latin Soul years – working on a cool Columbia session titled after an earlier hit, but served up with his new lean sound of the late 60s! The album's got that perfect Santamaria combo from the time – a group that features trumpet and these wonderfully sharp arrangements from the great Marty Sheller – plus very smoking reed work from a young Hubert Laws, wailing away on flute and tenor, and Bobby Capers on alto and baritone – both players who mix jazz and soul instrumental modes, to bring a hell of a lot of feeling to the overall sound of the band – in ways that really get past more familiar use of trumpet or trombone in other Latin combos. The band grooves nicely on original material like "Streak O Lean", "Ricky Tick", "Do It To It", "Fatback", "Coconut Milk", and "Jose Outside" – and they also reprise Mongo's big hit "Watermelon Man". Dakota Staton with Manny AlbamI Want A Country Man ... CD
Groove Merchant/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $9.99
Very hip work from Dakota Staton – one of her great early 70s albums for the Groove Merchant label! Backings here are by the band of Manny Albam – in a mode that's jazzy, but inflected with plenty of soul – and which has the same sort of rhythmic pulse that you'd find in Lou Rawls' best later work for Capitol. The style's a great one for Dakota – one that brings a bit more focus and energy to her music, and which almost sets her up more as a soul singer than a jazz one. Titles include "Girl Talk", "Country Man", "Heartbreak", "Make It Easy On Yourself", "How Did He Look", and a really great version of "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know". CD

Victor/Mr Bongo (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... About September 20, 2019
One of the coolest albums ever cut by Japanese wood flute player Hozan Yamamoto – a set that has him working with very groovy backings from the Sharps & Flats ensemble – who almost give the whole thing an MPS label blending of funky jazz and world music sounds! The approach is wonderful – a bit more upbeat and swinging than some of Yamamoto's other records, as Nobuo Hara leads the larger group with a totally cool sound – which makes the flute lines a sweet exotic touch over straightforward, soul-drenched, big band jazz! We might even link the sound to some of Dorothy Ashby's grooviest albums for Chess/Cadet – although with flute, instead of harp – and titles include "Komoro Mago-Uta", "Soma Bon-Uta", "Kokirio Bushi", "Sado Okesa", "Tairyo Utaikomi", and "Kuroda-Bushi". ✨✧ VariousSouthern Groove – Hotlanta, Aware, & Clintone Funk & Soul – Masterful & Obscure 1970s Funk & Soul From Georgia & Alabama ... CD
BGP (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.98
Funky soul from one of the less-discovered scenes in the south – the hotbed of small labels that were making some mighty great grooves in Atlanta during the 70s! The Peachtree city isn't nearly as well-cited as a soul music source in comparison to places like Memphis, Muscle Shoals, and even Miami – but back in the mid 70s, there was something really special going on – and for a strong moment, a few different labels really gave the city some great music! Much of the work here represents the changing character of Atlanta itself – deep soul vocals that were forged in a longer southern tradition, mixed with well-crafted grooves that show all the modern elements coming into play as the city grew and matured. Most of this work has a pre-disco vibe – with rhythms that are similar to the early work of Fatback or Kool & The Gang – with the difference that the singers in the lead are all pretty darn great on their own. BGP did an excellent job of choosing the tracks for the set, and the notes, as always, are great – and the package features 22 titles that include "Let's Dance" by Family Plann, "Seeds Of Life" by East LA Car Pool, "Down At The Disco" by Maggabrain, "Ain't It Funky" by Johnny Jacobs, "The Bump" by Floyd Smith, "Help Me (parts 1 & 2)" by Archie Russell, "I Don't Know What It Is But It Sure Is Funky" by Ripple, "Funk Pump" by The Counts, "Claim Jumpin" by Bill Brandon, "Checkmate" by The Ebony Godfather, "Shouldn't I Be Given The Right To Be Wrong" by Joe Hinton, "Husband In Law" by CL Blast, "Only A Fool" by Loleatta Holloway, "When I Build My World" by Jimmy Lewis, and "Complain To The Clouds" by Deep Velvet. Great early work from arranger Manny Album – Manny's entry in RCA's Jazz Workshop series – a set of tunes that are shorter, and arguably a bit more modern than some of his later work – tracks done definitely in that Jazz Workshop blend of west coast cool and east coast modern – with players that include Bob Brookmeyer, Nick Travis, Urbie Green, Billy Byers, Hal McKusick, Al Cohn, and Thad Jones. Hard-swinging big band material – with a heavy emphasis on drums! The album is a suite of six tracks – all written by either Manny Albam or Ernie Wilkins, both of whom arrange the groups on the set – really letting them open up nicely on the album's longish tracks. Manny and Ernie were two of the more soulful arrangers of their day – and they get some strong performances out of the groups, letting players like Conte Candoli on trumpet, Hal McKusick on alto, Al Cohn on tenor, and Freddie Green on guitar open up in longer tracks driven to intensity by some great drum work handled by the lesser-known (but excellent) Ted Sommer. Titles include "Skinning The Valves", "Dancers On Drums", "Bristling", and "The Octopus". LP, Vinyl record album

There's a long-burning spirit to the record that really takes us back to some of Lake's greatest moments from decades past – and which really seems to elevate Haynes more than usual too – and Fonda is superb in the setting, often working with full, thoughtful lines on his bass that are especially illuminating. Altschul is incredibly sharp and focused – almost working in a mode that's more Ed Blackwell than some of his other work – and the whole thing is superb, an instant classic from a group we hope to hear more from. A wonderful little session from Manny Albam – one that continues the strong tradition of larger group jazz arranging he began in the 60s, but which takes it to an even deeper level! Players include Frank Wess, Phil Woods, JJ Johnson, Jerome Richardson, and Mike Manieri – all extremely well-suited to an outing like this – and titles include "The Game Of The Year", "Born On Arrival", "The View From The Inside", "El Barrio Latino", "Ground Floor Rear", and "Riverview". Lobo's been a sophisticated force from the 60s bossa years onwards – and in recent years, he's gotten even more subtle and personal in his approach – in a way that really comes through here, with his well-phrased original lyrics set up in light instrumental settings that feature the guitar of Romero Lubambo and flute and saxes of Mauro Senise – with occasional guest work from Cristovao Bastos on piano, Kiko Horta on accordion, and Anat Cohen on clarinet. Flatiron Books, 2017. New Copy ... $4.99 26.99
The amazing story of the Wu-Tang's one-copy, million dollar album – a record that may be one of the greatest hoaxes in modern music, or a true marriage of hip hop and the art world! The record is hardly canonical material from the group, but it does represent a fascinating 21st Century evolution of that sense of image and marketing that always made their many projects of the 90s so revolutionary – and, like those, it also represents the work of a hip hop act to control game – instead of get bamboozled by it. The book tells the tale of the unique record and everything behind it – penned by an adviser on the project, who provides a huge amount of backstory and details that never made it to the press at the time. The story is maybe a bit self-congratulatory, and has maybe a bit too much "industry" at times – but given the content, that's also to be expected. 272 pages, hardcover. Book

A stunning standout from Ray Charles' years on ABC Records – and a set that brings in a bit of hard-swinging jazz to the country-styled groove Ray was hitting at the time! Backings are by Ralph Burns, who keeps things pretty hip – not as modern as some of his 50s charts for other singers, but with some great horns that cascade beautifully alongside Ray's raspy vocals in the lead. The "road" title leads to a bunch of travel-themed tunes – but that approach also yields one of Charles' biggest classics – his version of "Georgia On My Mind" – heard here amidst other tracks that include "New York's My Home", "Moonlight In Vermont", "Deep In The Heart Of Texas", "Blue Hawaii", "Carry Me Back To Old Virginny", "Alabamy Bound", and "Mississippi Mud". Don CherryMu Second Part (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
BYG/Sunspots (Italy), 1969. Used Gatefold ... $16.99
Don Cherry really breaks out here on his classic Mu sessions from France – using the new freedoms of post-68 Paris to explore themes at a level that would set the tone for generations to come! The album's very spare, and very improvised – with Cherry on pocket trumpet, piano, and wooden flute – plus a bit of percussion too – alongside drummer Ed Blackwell, who's equally unbridled – showing a huge evolution since the time both he and Don spent in the group of Ornette Coleman! There's a few echoes of the global elements that Cherry would later embrace more strongly in the 70s – but the core energy here is mostly improvised jazz, handled at a level that really makes a lot better use of the freedom than some of Don's contemporaries. Titles on this second part include "Bamboo Night", "The Mysticism Of My Sound", "Psycho Drama", "Smiling Faces Going Places", "Teo Teo Can", and "Dollar Brand/Spontaneous Composing/Exert Man On The Moon". The material all centers around the classic quartet – with McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – and the package also features recordings at Newport and Birdland, the classic session with Johnny Hartman on vocals, and all of the unreleased material that appeared on the Lost Album – issued in 2018. Titles include "Slow Blues", "Vilia", "Untitled Original 11383", "Impressions", "Untitled Original 11386", "One Up One Down", "Lush Life", "Dear Old Stockholm", "After The Rain", "You Are Too Beautiful", "Your Lady", "Alabama", and long live takes of "My Favorite Things", "Impressions", "The Promise", "Afro Blue", and "I Want To Talk About You". Xavier CugatChile Con Cugie ... LP
RCA, 1959. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Xavier Cugat turns his hit Latin sound to tunes from Mexico – working his way through medleys of traditional tunes, all given a late 50s zip, plus shorter numbers that work equally well in his choppy, percussive style. Titles include "Cielito Lindo", "Ay Jalisco No Te Rajes", "Alla En El Rancho Grande", "La Bamba", and "La Feria De Las Flores". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Duduka Da Fonseca & Helio AlvesSamba Jazz – Tom Jobim ... CD
Sunnyside, 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 16.98
A set dedicated to the memory of Antonio Carlos Jobim, but one that's hardly just the usual variation on his classic numbers – as only a few tunes here are actually by the composer, and all of the music has that fresh sort of sparkle that we always love in the Brazilian jazz material from drummer Duduka Da Fonseca! The core pairing here is Duduka and pianist Helio Alves, who also plays Fender Rhodes on some numbers too – and the duo get help from singer Maucha Adnet on about half the record, a key part of this trio who've been working together for over twenty five years. The set also features bass from Hans Glawischnig, saxes and flute from Billy Drewes, and guitar from Romero Lubambo – on titles that include "Pato Preto", "Gemini Man", "Helium", "A Vontade Mesmo", "Polo Pony", "Pedro Bonita Da Gavea", "A Correnteza", and "Untitled". Martin DennyPrimitiva ... LP
Liberty, Late 50s. Very Good ... $14.99
One of Martin Denny's greatest albums – thanks to some extra special added elements! For the record, Denny's classic quartet is augmented by a wealth of odd added percussion – including gongs, cymbals, tuned logs, steel drums, chimes, and "chromatic bamboo"! All of these elements take Denny's exotica sound way further than ever before – and if that's not enough, the legendary Tak Shindo plays a bit of Koto on the record too! Titles include "M'Bira", "Burma Train", "Kalua", "M'Gambo Mambo", and "Mau Mau". LP, Vinyl record album
(Turquoise label pressing with deep groove. Cover has partially split seams and some aging on the back.)

Eric DolphyEric Dolphy Septet With Donald Byrd – Paris 1964 ... CD
Hi Hat, 1964. New Copy ... $16.99
Some of Eric Dolphy's last material ever – recorded in Paris with some very surprising guest stars! The work is really tremendous – every bit as great as Dolphy's monumental studio albums for Prestige, and written and performed with a similar blend of the free, the lyrical, the avant, and the soulful – a groove that's often a bit more inside than some of Eric's other late recordings – and played with plenty of spirit throughout! The sessions make great use of American soloists Donald Byrd on trumpet and Nathan Davis on tenor – both players whose sound really balances Dolphy in a great way – holding down a groove while Eric takes off on alto sax or bass clarinet. The rhythm is by a French combo – with Jack Dieval on piano, Jacques Hess on bass, and Franco Monzecci on drums – plus a bit of congas on two tracks from Jacky Bambou. Titles are quite long, and really wonderful – and tunes include "245", "GW", "Serene", and "Springtime". CD

✨✧ Lance FergusonRare Groove Spectrum ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2018. Used ... $8.99
Lance Ferguson has given us plenty of great work over the years – from his work in The Bamboos, to all his many other projects – yet as much as we've liked all of those, this one might actually be one of his best – a fantastic reworking of rare groove tracks from the 70s, all with a nicely changed-up sense of instrumentation! The set's mostly instrumental, and Lance takes on tracks originally recorded by James Mason, Pleasure, Funk Inc, and other names who are big heavyweights 'round these parts – served up with very strong instrumentation by a combo that includes members of The Bamboos, Hiatus Kaiyote, and The Putbacks. Titles include "Sweet Power Your Embrace", "Goodbye So Long", "Joyous", "Egg Roll", "Brazilian Rhyme", "Am I Wrong", "A Love I Believe In", "Noches De Viaje", "The Panther", and "Smokey Joe's La La". CD also features a great version of the Jack McDuff tune "Oblighetto". CD

Dash/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... $9.99
Ish and the Foxy crew still going strong at the end of the 80s – although here, they seem to have dropped some of their Miami disco approach and are going for a sound that's got more of a New York new wave influence overall! There's almost some Ze Records touches on a few numbers – including some harder guitars and percussion – and a number of tunes move towards more of a quirky style than a soulful one. Titles include "Girls", "I Can't Stand The Heat", "Let's Be Bad", "Tonight", "Sambambe Rio", "I Belong To You", "She's So Cool", and "Rrrrock". CD

✨✧ RB GreavesRB Greaves (Atco) ... LP
Atco, 1969. Sealed ... $6.99
The amazing debut of RB Greaves – a soul singer with a difference! RB struck big with this album on late 60s Atlantic Records – yet despite production at Muscle Shoals, and arrangements from Arif Mardin, the sound here is quite different than most of his contemporaries – and certainly not the southern soul you'd expect! Instead, Greaves goes for a crackling quality that really showcases his trans-American roots – a vibe that's almost like Johnny Nash at points, and has a similar way of embracing a whole host of different sounds at one time – not just late 60s soul, but some other undercurrents of pop, and even some occasional folksy or island flavors as well. The album's standout hit is the legendary "Take A Letter Maria" – a cut that broke big on both sides of the tracks, and which is one of the most compelling story songs of the time. Other tunes include "This is Soul", "Ballad Of Leroy", "Ain't That Good News", "Home To Stay", and "Birmingham Alabama". LP, Vinyl record album

Coleman HawkinsHawk In Paris ... CD
BMG (Germany), 1956. Used ... $4.99
Well, Hawk isn't really in Paris on this one – as the album was recorded in New York, with backings by Manny Albam – but the spirit of Paris is very much alive on the tunes, which are a mixture of postwar French favorites, and others that have a similar sound. Albam's backings are light and gentle, and Hawkins tenor dominates all tracks, blowing easily and soulfully on well-placed solos. Titles include "La Chnouf", "April In Paris", "Mon Homme", "Under Paris Skies", "I Love Paris", and "La Mer". CD

Billie HolidaySongs For Distingue Lovers ... LP
Verve, Mid 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 24.99
Classic Verve work by Billie Holiday – and an album that probably brought the word "distingue" into the vocabulary of more people than any other use! (And in fact, probably also caused a lot more trouble with mispronunciation than any other Billie Holiday album title!) The tracks are slightly longer than usual – really opened up with some nice jazz inflections that make the whole thing feel like Billie is really part of the proceedings, and not just the singer in the front. Titles include familiar songs like "Day In Day Out", "Stars Fell On Alabama", "A Foggy Day", and "Just One Of Those Things" – all given the amazing Holiday take, in a way that opens them up with more emotion than you might have thought possible! LP, Vinyl record album
