Lizzy Mercier DesclouxMambo Nassau (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ze/Light In The Attic, 1980. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
A really funked-up batch of dancefloor tunes – produced with a uniquely cross-cultural approach! Ze Records diva Lizzy Mercier Descloux works here with influential post-disco, post-punk producer Steve Stanely – on a set of tunes cut in Nassau, with some great backing by a combo that includes Wally Badarou on keyboards. The resulting groove takes the skittish pan-club sound of the early 80s Ze Records scene, and infuses it with the hippest take on Jamaican rhythms of the time – resulting in a groundbreaking batch of tunes that were years ahead of their time! Titles include "Room Mate", "Sports Spootnicks", "Payola", "Funky Stuff", "Slipped Disc", "Lady O K'Pete", and "Bim Bam Boum". CD features bonus tracks "Maita", "Mister Soweto", "Sun Is Shining", "Don't You Try To Stop Me", and "Corpo Molli Pau Duro". CD

Now Again, 1970s/1980s. Used ... $4.99
A fantastic anthology of Flint, MI soul great Regional Garland – 70s soul empires were built on lesser talent than you'll find on this set put together by Egon & Now Again! Garland is a performer, producer, songwriter and arranger of whom we were most familiar with for his work with the group Hunt's Determination – a taste of which is included here, along with Regional's recordings with The Perfections, 21st Generations, Mixed Sugar, Brilliance and others. Even the few Hunts Determination records we were familiar with show a fairly staggering stylistic range, while holding together as a tight whole – and that's all the more impressive with a broader collection of work with varying personnel here. The heart of the collection is early-to-late 70s recordings, from dancefloor soul, funk and strains of disco later in the decade – revelatory stuff for us. We knew the man was good, but, damn! The set also features several mid 80s recordings with that era's synth textured sound with the 70s soul vocals surprisingly well. Includes "I Need Love" & "Hey James" with 21st Generations, "Get On Down" & "Girl You Better Hurry" with The Perfections, "I Need Love" and "Are We Through" with Hunts Determination, "15 Ain't Young No More", "It's A Bad Feeling" and "Disco Jam Bam Bam" with Mixed Sugar, the previously unreleased "Gangster Girl" and "I'm Sad We've Broke Up", "I'm Falling In Love" with Vann & Reggie, "Hit Girl" with Brilliance and more. Charles MingusOh Yeah ... CD
Atlantic, 1962. Used ... $4.99
Quite a crazy little record from Charles Mingus! Mingus plays piano and sings (yes, you read that right!) in a tight sextet with Booker Ervin and Roland Kirk on reeds, and Jimmy Knepper on trombone. Mingus is trying out a kind of messed-up, blues-inspired sound here – but for some reason the tracks sort of fall short of their potential, perhaps because they're not infused with the same clarity and anger as his earlier works, or perhaps because Mingus' work on the piano just isn't as fierce as his bass playing. Still, the album's a nice one, and way better than the other Mingus piano album, on Impulse. Titles include "Oh Lord, Don't Let Them Drop That Atomic Bomb On Me", "Wham Bam Thank You Ma'am", "Devil Woman", and "Passions Of A Man". Plus the CD includes a previously unreleased interview with Charles Mingus. CD

Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Masterful reggae instrumentals from the great Tommy McCook! Reggae In Jazz does indeed have some jazz-steeped solos augmenting the vibe quite nicely, but it's perhaps not the full on reggae/jazz hybrid the title suggests – which is a good thing, actually! The rhythms are strongly rooted in classic Dynamic and Channel One reggae instro territory, but the vibe is enhanced a bit by soul jazzy organ, guitar and more on the solo tip – and a bit of funk, too! Produced by Buster Riley, with Sly Dunbar, Santa Davos. Robbie Shakespeare, Chinna Smith, Ansel Collins, Jackie Mitoo and other legends on the session. Incredible! This is quite possibly the best of this legendary series of Jamaican soul, funk, and reggae tracks – and it's a masterpiece! A mighty double-length collection of cuts from the Sleeping Bag label – an important 80s indie that grew up almost completely during the generation of hip hop – which meant that right from the start, the company had a very different approach to soul music and contemporary club! There's plenty of hip hop elements at work here – harder beats, more electro modes, and other street soul elements – mixed with a rising current of house music, but again with a style that's much more tuned towards a New York vibe than the rest. 2CD set features 24 tracks in all – most of them rare 12" mixes – and titles include "Go Bang (Francois K mix)" by Dinosaur L, "Tiger Stripes (ext mix)" by Felix, "Radio Rhythm (short voc)" by Clandestine, "Weekend (club the wam bam mix)" by Todd Terry, Happiness (orig Frankie Knuckles club 12" mix)" by Nicole, "Let Me Love You For Tonight (orig house club 12")" by Kariya, "Just Waiting For You (master dub 12")" by Ann Marie, "Come Into My Life (Mantronix 12")" by Joyce Sims, "A Little Bit Of Lovin (clubby dubby mix)" by Chocolette, "Cornbelt (Larry Levan mix)" by Dinosaur L, "Chill Pill (Danny Krivit mix)" by Sounds Of JHS Brooklyn, and "What Am I Gonna Do About You (Steve Anderson silk on steel mix)" by Tafuri. Doctor Bird (UK), 1966. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
One of the most unusual albums on the legendary Treasure Isle label – issued here with 46 bonus tracks too! Independence Jump Up Calypso is one of the most unusual records Duke Reid ever released – a set of mento, not rocksteady or ska – not entirely calypso, but with a similar groove – and issued here in a slightly-late 1966 package to celebrate Jamaica's split from the UK! The tracks are mostly by two key artists, and have a nice raw groove that's similar to other Treasure Isle productions – plenty of currents of jazz in the horns, romping rhythms, and lyrics that are a key precursor to the way that vocals would play out later in reggae. Titles include "Jump Independently", "The Weed", "Bam Bam", "Mulfridite", and "Hooligans" by Count Lasher – and "In The Park", "Hard Times", and "Old Man's Drive" by Count Alert – plus instrumentals "Seven Guns Alive" and "Dog War Jump Up" by Lynn Taitt & The Baba Brooks Band. CD also features a huge amount of other Treasure Isle/Duke Reid rarities – ska, rocksteady, and instrumental singles – from The Sensations, Baba Brooks Band, The Miracles, The Upsetters, Tommy McCook, The Silvertones, Lynn Tait, Joey & Butch, Tony & Dennis, Eric Morris, Herman Marquis, and many others. A great large group project from arranger Manny Albam – one that teams him up with "jazz greats" of the east coast scene, in a really hard-swinging set of tracks that showcase some wonderful solo work! Manny's working here with a set of players who are well-chosen for their ability to work strongly in an ensemble, yet also break out with strong solo work when the moment comes – and the lineup includes Gerry Mulligan, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Phil Woods, Bob Brookmeyer, and Art Farmer – with rhythm by the trio of Hank Jones, Milt Hinton, and Osie Johnson. The tracks are long, with more room for soloing than usual on this sort of album – and nearly all of them are originals by Manny. Thrill Jockey, 1970s. Used Gatefold ... $11.99
A wonderful testament to the legacy of Malian singer, flute player and group leader Sorry Bamba – documenting his years leading the Kanaga Orchestra Of Mopti throughout the 1970s – and a great, vital release on Thrill Jockey! The region's musical heritage is intergral to Sorry Bamba's music, but it's also relevant and contemporary to its period and ours – with guitar, bass, organ and horns along with more earthy percussion. His style of songs is pretty amazing, too – and often done with a sense of humor that could be easy to overlook to outsiders – but there's no overlooking how great the music is. Beautifully done by Thrill Jockey, compilers Alex Minoff & Ian Eagleson – with input and insight from Sorry Bamba himself. In the best version of jazz, great musicians just keep getting better and better as the years go on – and that's definitely the case here with saxophonist Kosuke Mine, a player who's reemerged with a sound that's even stronger than his classics of the 70s! This album may well be one of Kosuke's most searing ever – as he plays both tenor and soprano sax in a hard-driving quartet that features younger musicians on piano, bass, and drums – really rising to the new fire that Mine's brought to his horns – on a set of long, beautiful tracks that are filled with soul and spirit – "Head Water", "Rias Coast", "Bamboo Grove", "Short Fuse", and "21". A gem of a record – even better than is 70s albums! CD

Eddie Palmieri/Cal TjaderBamboleate ... LP
Tico, 1967. Very Good+ ... $49.99
An incredible collaboration between pianist Eddie Palmieri and vibist Cal Tajder – a record done for Tico in answer to their previous session for Verve – and a set that's even harder-jamming overall! Cal and Eddie really find something special together on the record – and both players groove into a descarga mode that burns even more strongly than their own other work of the decade – a masterful jam that's a really true collaboration, and which brings out the best that both musicians had to offer. Cal's moving way beyond his familiar modes here – with a fluid, freely colorful sound – and Eddie himself is beginning to hit some of the darker, harder notes that would show up even more strongly on his records of the 70s. There's a much more strongly jazz-based sound here than most of Palmieri's previous records – a really bold focus on the instrumentation as it rolls out over some great modally-informed grooves – and titles include "Bamboleate", "Resemblance", "Guajira Candela", "Mi Montuno", and "Come An Get It". VariousSouthern Groove – Hotlanta, Aware, & Clintone Funk & Soul – Masterful & Obscure 1970s Funk & Soul From Georgia & Alabama ... CD
BGP (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Funky soul from one of the less-discovered scenes in the south – the hotbed of small labels that were making some mighty great grooves in Atlanta during the 70s! The Peachtree city isn't nearly as well-cited as a soul music source in comparison to places like Memphis, Muscle Shoals, and even Miami – but back in the mid 70s, there was something really special going on – and for a strong moment, a few different labels really gave the city some great music! Much of the work here represents the changing character of Atlanta itself – deep soul vocals that were forged in a longer southern tradition, mixed with well-crafted grooves that show all the modern elements coming into play as the city grew and matured. Most of this work has a pre-disco vibe – with rhythms that are similar to the early work of Fatback or Kool & The Gang – with the difference that the singers in the lead are all pretty darn great on their own. BGP did an excellent job of choosing the tracks for the set, and the notes, as always, are great – and the package features 22 titles that include "Let's Dance" by Family Plann, "Seeds Of Life" by East LA Car Pool, "Down At The Disco" by Maggabrain, "Ain't It Funky" by Johnny Jacobs, "The Bump" by Floyd Smith, "Help Me (parts 1 & 2)" by Archie Russell, "I Don't Know What It Is But It Sure Is Funky" by Ripple, "Funk Pump" by The Counts, "Claim Jumpin" by Bill Brandon, "Checkmate" by The Ebony Godfather, "Shouldn't I Be Given The Right To Be Wrong" by Joe Hinton, "Husband In Law" by CL Blast, "Only A Fool" by Loleatta Holloway, "When I Build My World" by Jimmy Lewis, and "Complain To The Clouds" by Deep Velvet. An overlooked gem of spiritual jazz from the South African scene – a group led by pianist Tete Mbambisa, but one that also features some of the best work we've ever heard from legendary reedman Basil Coetzee! King/Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
60s jazz meets Japanese bamboo flute – all in a session with a great mix of groovy and exotic touches! The record's a unique meeting of jazz and folkloric elements – done in a style that's a bit like some of the late 60s sessions of this nature on MPS, but a fair bit groovier overall – as the tracks are shorter and more focused, and often have a nice sort of bounce at the bottom. Flute is by Minoru Muraoka, and arrangements are by Takashi Ikeda and Kozaburo Yamaki, conducting their New Dimension and New Emotion groups respectively. Bits of sitar bring in an even groovier sound to the record – and the flute itself has some oddly off-kilter notes that further trip out the tunes. Titles include "Soul Bamboo", "Take Five", "The Positive & The Negative", "Call Me", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Scarborough Fair". LP, Vinyl record album

Sterns (UK), 1980/1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
More killer work from Senegal's legendary Orchestra Baobab! This CD collects music from two of the band's best late-period albums, Mouhamadou Bamba (1980) and Sibou Odia (1981), both cut prior to the band's celebrated Pirate's Choice sessions. All of the group's trademarks are present – the rollicking Afro-Cuban grooves and the gorgeous Mandinkan and Wolof melodies sung with muezzin-like soul by Thione Seck, Rudy Gomis, and Balla Sidibe. Still, it's the utterly sublime lead guitar by the brilliant Barthelemy Attisso that captivates us most. A number of the tracks were later rerecorded for Baobab's comeback album Specialist in All Styles, but there's something about the beautifully murky aura here that's lost on the slicker remade versions. Really, you can't go wrong with anything waxed by Baobad. Ten great tracks including "Boulmamine", "Doomou Baaye", "Bon Bon 1", "Autorail", "Sou Sedhiou", and "Ndiambaane". CD

One of the coolest albums ever cut by Japanese wood flute player Hozan Yamamoto – a set that has him working with very groovy backings from the Sharps & Flats ensemble – who almost give the whole thing an MPS label blending of funky jazz and world music sounds! The approach is wonderful – a bit more upbeat and swinging than some of Yamamoto's other records, as Nobuo Hara leads the larger group with a totally cool sound – which makes the flute lines a sweet exotic touch over straightforward, soul-drenched, big band jazz! We might even link the sound to some of Dorothy Ashby's grooviest albums for Chess/Cadet – although with flute, instead of harp – and titles include "Komoro Mago-Uta", "Soma Bon-Uta", "Kokirio Bushi", "Sado Okesa", "Tairyo Utaikomi", and "Kuroda-Bushi". BBE (UK), 2014. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great selection of future soul tracks, all handpicked by radio DJ Radhu – an American talent with ears that may well rival those of Gilles Peterson for finding the sounds we'll all enjoy tomorrow! The work here is from a wide range of the soulful underground – not just Neo Soul, but work inspired by a number of different styles and modes – selected and spaced perfectly by Radhu, so that the freshness of one track really seems to infect another! We honestly hadn't heard of most of the artists here before – as they're true "bubblers", picked from the lesser-known corners of the underground. Titles include "Calm" by Gdna, "Silence (midnight mix)" by Jevon Reynolds, "Shangri La" by James Tillman, "Diligence" by Stephanie Nicole, "Intoxicated" by Joomanji, "Fallen" by Rippy Austin, "Where Did We Go Wrong" by Anu Sun, and "Ultraviolet" by Aisha Mars. A great 4-part suite that rivals any of Manny Albam's other sessions from the time – including Jazz Greats Of Our Time, or Jazz New York – and, like that one, a set that's filled with top-shelf jazz talents at the time! The tracks here are all quite long, and done in a bluesy mode that gives the album a bit more soul than usual for Albam – and the set features Phil Woods and Gene Quill on altos, Al Cohn on tenor, Art Farmer and Ernie Royal on trumpets, Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, and Eddie Costa on piano. ✨✧ Alegre All StarsTe Invita ... CD
Alegre/Sonido, Early 60s. Used ... $19.99
Fantastic work by one of the greatest Latin jazz groups ever! The Alegre All Stars were heavily inspired by the Cuban Jam Sessions of the late 50s and early 60s – and the ensemble brought together some of the greatest players of the New York scene of the time – like Bobby Rodriguez, Louie Ramirez, Charlie Palmieri, Kako, and others. The group had a real talent for loosely jamming Latin jazz – and they virtually pioneered the descarga sound through their initial four albums for the Alegre label. This set features 10 tracks from those albums – including a few long jammers, and a few shorter tracks with vocals. Titles include "Perdido", "Alegre Te Invita", "El Manicero", "Yumbambe", "Sono Sono", "Estoy Buscando A Kako", and "Manteca". CD

✨✧ Les BaxterSoul Of The Drums ... LP
Reprise, Early 60s. Very Good ... $24.99
One of the rarest of all Les Baxter albums – and one of the best! The record was cut after Les' early 60s move to Reprise – but it's still very much in the vein of his Capitol exotic work, which is more than we can say for some of his other Reprise sessions. There's a strong emphasis on percussion – as you might guess by the title – and the orchestrations are both sophisticated and emotionally driving. Titles include "Sunrise At Kowloon", "Which Doctor?", "Mai Tai", "The Girl Behind The Bamboo Curtain", "River of Dreams", and "The Enchanted Reef". Great cover, too! LP, Vinyl record album

Brewer & ShipleyDown In LA ... LP
A&M, 1968. Very Good+ ... $11.99
The A&M debut of Brewer & Shipley – and a set that's got a lot deeper sound than the duo's later radio hits! There's a youthful, earnest feel going on here – touched with a bit of sunshine, too – all in that wonderfully fresh feel you'll get from the early A&M forays into rock – this magical vibe that's not nearly as posturing, or as self-conscious as some of the heavier projects from bigger labels at the time. Songwriting is sensitive, delivered beautifully by the two voices – and instrumentation often has acoustic elements that echo the love of country that was bubbling in the LA scene of this late 60s Byrds generation. Yet the vibe is quite different than anything you might know, too – almost somewhere between the Roger Nichols Trio and Lambert & Nuttycomb – showing a nice A&M evolution that links together both acts. Titles include "She Thinks", "Truly Right", "Green Bamboo", "Dreamin In The Shade", "Love Love", and "An Incredible State Of Affairs". LP, Vinyl record album

Don CherryMu Second Part ... LP
BYG/Actuel, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
Don Cherry really breaks out here on his classic Mu sessions from France – using the new freedoms of post-68 Paris to explore themes at a level that would set the tone for generations to come! The album's very spare, and very improvised – with Cherry on pocket trumpet, piano, and wooden flute – plus a bit of percussion too – alongside drummer Ed Blackwell, who's equally unbridled – showing a huge evolution since the time both he and Don spent in the group of Ornette Coleman! There's a few echoes of the global elements that Cherry would later embrace more strongly in the 70s – but the core energy here is mostly improvised jazz, handled at a level that really makes a lot better use of the freedom than some of Don's contemporaries. Titles on this second part include "Bamboo Night", "The Mysticism Of My Sound", "Psycho Drama", "Smiling Faces Going Places", "Teo Teo Can", and "Dollar Brand/Spontaneous Composing/Exert Man On The Moon". Cortijo in New York – making for a classic meeting of Puerto Rican and Nuyorican sounds – with plenty of help from the young Ismael Rivera! Rhythms are tight throughout – very fierce and full, showing the new energy of the younger generation that Cortijo helped get going at the time – and horns still have some echoes of 50s modes, but are looser, and bring in plenty of jazz elements too – showing a lot more soul than a record like this might have had a decade before! A set dedicated to the memory of Antonio Carlos Jobim, but one that's hardly just the usual variation on his classic numbers – as only a few tunes here are actually by the composer, and all of the music has that fresh sort of sparkle that we always love in the Brazilian jazz material from drummer Duduka Da Fonseca! The core pairing here is Duduka and pianist Helio Alves, who also plays Fender Rhodes on some numbers too – and the duo get help from singer Maucha Adnet on about half the record, a key part of this trio who've been working together for over twenty five years. The set also features bass from Hans Glawischnig, saxes and flute from Billy Drewes, and guitar from Romero Lubambo – on titles that include "Pato Preto", "Gemini Man", "Helium", "A Vontade Mesmo", "Polo Pony", "Pedro Bonita Da Gavea", "A Correnteza", and "Untitled". Very searing sounds here from reedman Lao Dan – who not only blows alto sax, but also suona and Chinese bamboo flute – all in a freely improvised setting with Paul Flaherty on alto and tenor, Damon Smith on bass, and Randall Colbourne on drums and percussion! Some moments are bold and full-on – especially when Dan is on alto, next to Flaherty – others are somewhat spacious, but still pick up this intensity as they progress – which happens often, given that three of the album's four tracks are well past the 20 minute mark! Eric DolphyEric Dolphy Septet With Donald Byrd – Paris 1964 ... CD
Hi Hat, 1964. New Copy ... $9.99
Some of Eric Dolphy's last material ever – recorded in Paris with some very surprising guest stars! The work is really tremendous – every bit as great as Dolphy's monumental studio albums for Prestige, and written and performed with a similar blend of the free, the lyrical, the avant, and the soulful – a groove that's often a bit more inside than some of Eric's other late recordings – and played with plenty of spirit throughout! The sessions make great use of American soloists Donald Byrd on trumpet and Nathan Davis on tenor – both players whose sound really balances Dolphy in a great way – holding down a groove while Eric takes off on alto sax or bass clarinet. The rhythm is by a French combo – with Jack Dieval on piano, Jacques Hess on bass, and Franco Monzecci on drums – plus a bit of congas on two tracks from Jacky Bambou. Titles are quite long, and really wonderful – and tunes include "245", "GW", "Serene", and "Springtime". CD

A fantastic album from this groundbreaking Latin combo from Chicago – one who've got an inclusive spirit that grabs together so many different elements of music and unifies them as one! The style isn't quite salsa, isn't Latin rock or jazz – but instead has so many strands of sounds coming together at once – not colliding, but really merging and making something beautiful and new in the process – always with a sound that's proud, righteous, and very aware of its power to change! In a time of borders and boundaries, the approach is especially welcome – and it's our guess that we'll be hearing plenty from Dos Santos in years to come. EsquivelInfinity In Sound Vols 1 & 2 ... CD
RCA/Bar None, 1960/1961. Used ... $9.99
A bachelor pad double-header – two infinite classics from Esquivel, back to back on a single CD! Volume 1 is one of the maestro's greatest! From the instruments spiralling off to infinity on the cover, to the tracks played in the unique crazy Esquivel "wah wah" style, the album stands as one of the finest examples of (and obstacle courses for) modern high fidelity – a really dynamic set of instrumental tunes that perfectly display the powers of the legendary Juan Garcia Esquivel! Instrumentation is quite full – lots of horns that blast one minute, disappear the next – with lots of odd guitar bits, percussive elements, and other cool twists and turns to keep things plenty darn interesting – even when the tunes themselves are familiar ones. Tracks include "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "Music Makers", "Frenesi", "So Rare", "Take The A Train", "Harlem Nocturne", "Autumn Leaves", and "Macarena". As the cover warns, this one is for "Hi-Fanatics"! Volume 2 is an incredible record of over the top arrangements – all produced with the kind of all-around sound that made Esquivel's best records so great! Juan Garcia's really got his trademark sound in place by the time of this set – and the album's got plenty of "wah wah" and "doo doo" vocals, mixed with swinging strings and soaring piano – in a sound that's perfectly summed up by the cover's "trombones into infinity" look. Titles include "Baia", "La Bamba", "Sentimental Journey", "Espana Cani", and "Lullaby Of Birdland". CD

✨✧ Fabio Frizzi/Walter Rizzati & Alessandro BlonksteinerLucio Fulci's Gates Of Hell Trilogy (City Of The Living Dead/The Beyond/House By The Cemetery) (3CD set) ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1980/1981. New Copy 3CD ... Just Sold Out!
Three Italian horror classics – packaged here in a single set! First up is Fabio Frizzi's score for Nella Citta Dei Morti Viventi/City Of The Living Dead – exactly the kind of set that shows why he was one of the true masters of Italian horror! The sounds here are a mix of electric and acoustic elements – but the latter are often played in offbeat ways that they really sound electric – making for a moody mix of music that goes way beyond the usual spare slasher keyboards! A few numbers use wordless vocals, while others have nicely stepping strings – and a beefier bassline comes into play on a few standout funk tracks as well. Titles include "Toward Dawn", "Fatti Misteriosi", "Apoteosi Del Mistero", "Occhi Di Brace", and "Verso L'Alba". Next is Frizzi's Beyond/E Tu Vivrai Nel Terrore L'Aldila – a very spooky soundtrack – and one that stands out as one of the best-remembered from this important second generation of Italian horror! The record's got less of the atonal orchestrations and funk/thriller modes of a few years before – and moves into the spare, eerie quality that John Carpenter helped usher in – with lots of crashing piano lines, atonal guitar parts, and weird descending chords that feel like they're going to suck you into the deep! There's some very nice and sparing use of synthesizer within the score – just the right bit to add a creepy edge, but maybe not as much as on other synth-heavy soundtracks from the time – and titles include "Voci Dal Nulla", "Oltre La Soglia", "Suono Aperto", "Verso L'Ignoto", and "Giro Di Blues". Walter Rizzati's score for Quella Villa Accanto Al Cimitero/House By The Cemetery has lots of keyboards – in a spare, spooky soundtrack from the early 80s Italian horror scene – a blood-dripping masterpiece from director Lucio Fulcio! Walter Rizzati's music here is heavy on the kinds of electric touches you'd hear from both Goblin or John Carpenter – and often paced at a level that's somewhere between the pair – not as jamming as Goblin, but a bit fuzzier than Carpenter – a blend that makes for some really wonderful numbers that are plenty creepy here on their own – even away from the images on the screen! There's plenty of great bits that creep up on you slowly – and others that jump mercilessly from dark corners – on titles that include "Quella Villa", "I Remember", "Incontro", "Blonk Monster", "Verso Il Terrore", "Voci Dal Terrore", "Tema Bambino", and "Chi Sta Arrivando". Gemelli/Roundtable (Australia), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 36.99
An amazing lost album from the legendary Gruppo D'Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza – a sextet of Italian modernists that included Ennio Morricone! The album may well be the group's grooviest ever – recorded right after their legendary Feed-back set, and done with a similar blend of compelling rhythms and odd instrumentation – in ways that are undeniably funky at points, and downright trippy at others! The drumming seems to draw a lot from the changes in German prog – with a very specific Can influence at work – and other elements move in and out of the mix in a really great way – clearly improvisational, but when the groove gets going, it's clear that the players also can't help starting to jam. Starlite, 1955. Very Good+ ... $2.99
An early, early Hi-Lo's album on Starlite Records – and a harmony vocal masterpieces of the 50s! Vocal groups had certainly existed in American pop music before the quartet first hit the scene, but thanks to incredible vocal arrangements by leader Gene Puerling, and dynamic orchestrations by Frank Comstock, the Hi-Los managed to impress with a sound that was incredibly fresh at the time – and which went onto have a strong impact on many other groups for years to come. Comstock's got a great "loud then soft" style of backing that perfectly suites Puerling's tonal and chromatic complexities – heard here at a very early point, but already showing signs of the brilliance to come with Singers Unlimited. 11 numbers in all, including "Rockin' Chair", "Stars Fell On Alabama", "Nice Work If You Can Get It", "I Thought About You", "Jeepers Creepers", "Speak Low", "Button Up Your Overcoat", and "Put Your Dreams Away". Capricorn/Reel Music, 1978. Used ... $8.99
A really great set of later southern soul from Eddie Hinton – recorded at Muscle Shoals with a nice 70s take on the classic 60s style of the genre – with powerful vocals from Hinton! The record's surprisingly rootsy for the time – and Eddie sings in a wonderful mode that has plenty of traces of Otis Redding and James Carr. The production has a modern touch, but never in a way that smooths out the real gritty soulfulness – and on these numbers, the album isn't out of step with some of the nice mid 70s work of Arthur Alexander or Paul Kelly. A genuine gem! Titles include "Get Off In It", "I Got The Feeling", "You Got Me Singing", "Yeah Man", Shout Bamalama", "Brand New Man", and "Shoot The Moon". CD

Groove Merchant/Unidisc (Canada), 1975. Used ... $13.99
A double-length set that features 2 Groove Holmes albums for Groove Merchant! First up is Night Glider – an album that has Groove's funky organ riffing nicely over some tight larger arrangements! The style is really great, and a nice departure from the smaller combo Groove Holmes sound of the 60s – more in keeping with his later Blue Note work, in that the organ's in the lead, grooving soulfully, and the rest of the band vamps and comps behind him with a tight style that's almost in the soundtrack mode! Players include Pretty Purdie on drums, Horace Ott on electric piano, and Seldon Powell on tenor – and Horace Ott wrote two nice originals – "Night Glider" and "Flyjack" – and Groove contributed "Pure Cane Sugar". Other tracks include "Go Away Little Girl", "Young & Foolish", and "One Mint Julep". Next up is New Groove – a monumental batch of organ jazz groovers – recorded with some larger backings from Manny Albam, and a super-dope, super-funk sort of 70s feel that's really outta site! The tracks are lean and very rhythmically oriented – all instruments grooving very strictly on the beat, except for Groove's wailing Hammond – which takes off over the top in some fierce musical flights! Bernard Purdie chops up some wicked drums on the set, and titles include "Red Onion", "Meditation", "Good Vibrations", "Chu Chu", and the solid groover "You've Got it Bad". CD

Bernard Purdie chops up some wicked drums on the set, and titles include "Red Onion", "Meditation", "Good Vibrations", "Chu Chu", and the solid groover "You've Got it Bad". CD

Lurlean HunterNight Life ... CD
Vik/RCA (Spain), 1956. Used ... $18.99
An RCA classic from Lurlean Hunter – a singer who's sadly overlooked these days, but who was a real up-and-comer from the Chicago scene in the 50s! Lurlean's got a style that's surprisingly smooth at times – much richer and more jazz-based than the sometimes-bluesy cover images she was given – a quality that sounds especially great here amidst fuller backings from Manny Albam, an arranger who really helps Hunter cross over strongly for the set. The record's beautifully done – poised, but still filled with soul and feeling – and players on the date include Joe Newman on trumpet, Al Cohn on tenor, and Barry Galbraith on guitar. Titles include some lesser-known numbers like "Moondrift" and "Night Life" – plus "Gentleman Friend", "What A Difference A Day Makes", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "Sunday", and "This Time The Dream's On Me". Kandia KouyateBiriko ... CD
Syllart (Mali), 2002. Used ... $12.99
Powerful acoustic songs from one of Mali's greatest female singers! Although her career started back in the early 90s, Kandia Kouyate record commercially until 1997 when she recorded a hit duet with Sekouba Bambino Diabate. Biriko is her second album, and its gorgeous mixture of hand percussion, acoustic guitars, balafon, n'goni, violin, and kora, among other instruments, sculpt hypnotic, spindly lines to provide the perfect support for her charismatic voice – a mixture of booming gospel-like power, incantatory intensity, and stunning lyrical tenderness. While so many African singers specialize in one approach or another, Kouyate seems to have mastered them all. The great Djelimady Tounkara of the Super Rail Band contributes guitar on several tracks. Tunes include "San Barana", "Mortalite", "Ibalan", "Djanfa", and "Kadabila". CD

✨✧ Yusef LateefBlue Yusef Lateef ... LP
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
One of our favorite Atlantic albums by the great Yusef Lateef – an incredible session that has him dipping back into his earlier exotic roots with those great reed styles of the early 60s – yet also hitting a mix of soul and funk like some of his other albums from the time! The sound is tremendous – wonderfully righteous, at a level that really set the tone for more ambitious soul jazz projects of the 70s by other artists – including the best of the soul jazz underground who were often as inspired by Lateef as they were by Coltrane! The group's great, too – and features Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Sonny Red on alto, Hugh Lawson on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums – next to Yusef's own work on tenor, flute, bamboo flute, tamboura, and percussion. Titles include "Sun Dog", "Moon Cup", "Othelia", "Like It Is", and the groovy "Juba Juba". LP, Vinyl record album

LibreCon Salsa Con Ritmo – Vol 1 ... CD
Salsoul, 1976. Used ... $24.99
The first crucial album from Manny Oquendo and his legendary Libre group – a combo who'd go onto have great power in the Latin scene in the years after this release – thanks to their perfect blend of rhythmic roots and bold jazzy elements! Libre almost prefigure the more sophisticated growth in Latin jazz to come in the 80s and 90s – that style, which was also unleashed by Eddie Palmieri, in which the core classic elements could still hold strongly – especially in rhythms and vocals – while soloists could get a bit more adventurous over the top. That latter aspect is a great thing – given that the record features a lineup that includes Dave Valentin on flute, Ronnie Cuber on baritone, Papo Vasquez and Barry Rogers on trombones, and Jerry Gonzaez and Milton Cardona on percussion. Marty Sheller handles the arrangements – and titles include a great version of Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee", done in a Latin medley with "A Gozar Y Bailar" – plus "Saoco", "Risque", "Lamento Borincano", and "Bamboleate". Roaring LionCairi Calypso – 1930 to 1939 ... LP
Asherah, 1930s. New Copy ... $9.99
Roaring Lion is a singer who definitely earns his name – a strong early voice in the formation of calypso – and an artist whose early work on 78rpm discs still tops most of the later giants of the genre! The work here is an early hybrid of Island rhythms and jazz – often performed at a pulsating pace that seems perfect for the fast-spinning speed of the 78rpm single – especially given the Lion's roaring vocals, which must have sounded great coming out of the cone of a pre-electric record player! The horns add a lot to the vibrancy of the music, too – and titles include "Ugly Woman", "I Am Going To Buy A Bungalow", "J'Ouvert Barrio", "Bamsee Lambay", "Malicious Neighbours", "Fall Of Man", and "Ba Boo La La". ✨✧ Louvin BrothersSatan Is Real/Handpicked Songs 1955 to 1962 ... CD
Capitol/Light In The Attic, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CDs ... $8.99 23.99
The soul saving, Satan deterring classic by The Louvin Brothers – plus the excellent Handpicked Songs compilation of Louvin tracks lovingly selected by an eclectic group of indebted artists – in this great 2CD set from Light In The Attic! Satan Is Real is a fantastic record of country harmony spirituals, cut by the legendary Ira and Charlie Louvin, during the height of their years at Capitol. The record's a treasure all the way through – from great cuts like "Satan is Real", "The Drunkard's Room", and "Dying From Home, And Lost" – to the groovy cover that has the Louvins standing next to a flaming pile of garbage with a statue of Satan! The real deal! Handpicked Songs is amazing music from the greatest chapter of the legendary Louvin Brothers – the kind of work that's made them a legend for generations! The set features Louvin classics chosen by a reverent group of singers and songwriters that really run the gamut – Dolly Parton, Beck, Kris Kristofferson, Chris Hilman, Emmylou Harris, Will Oldham, Zooey Deschanel, The Black Angels, Mark Lanegan, M Ward, and Jim James – but all artists who have been undeniably influenced by Ira and Charlie Louvin, and their way of melding melancholy harmonies into something that goes way beyond everyday country music! Latin Percussion Ventures, 1978. Near Mint- ... $29.99
One of the rare excellent albums on the Latin Percussion Ventures label – and a spare set of percussion tracks that works well as a stripped-down Latin jazz album too! The pair in the title play conga, timbales, and bongos – and they get backing from Gilbert Colon on electric piano and Jose Santiago on bass – hardly any other instrumentation at all, but used in ways that really round things out nicely! The cuts have a spare groove that's really nice, and kind of sinister in its spareness – especially when the electric piano takes off next to the percussion – and the mighty Martin Cohen put the whole set together, with his legendary approach to production. Titles include "Tres Lindas Cubanas", "El Bollinski En D7", "Ramonita", and "Bamboleate" – each presented with and without solos! LP, Vinyl record album

Buddy Bregman's doing the arrangements on this one – and he brings a great jazzy flair to the backings, helping Anita O'Day open up in her most dynamic mode! The whole set swings nicely, but without any sort of hoke – and Bregman manages to highlight specific instruments in the arrangements in different ways on each tune – creating a nice sense of variety that really keeps things fresh. Titles are mostly familiar numbers, but the match of Bregman and O'Day is more than enough to make them come alive anew – and tunes include "Man With A Horn", "Let's Begin", "I Never Had A Chance", "Stars Fell On Alabama", "Don't Be That Way", and "I Won't Dance". Nancy PriddyYou've Come This Way Before ... LP
Dot/Modern Harmonic, 1968. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
A tremendously beautiful album from vocalist Nancy Priddy – the kind of record that got buried in the record bins of the 60s, but which is finally getting the attention it deserves! Nancy had a career that started out in folk (she was once a member of The Bitter End Singers), but she's working here in a slightly psychedelic style that mixes the intimate with the baroque – in a way that reminds us a lot of some of our favorite work on A&M at the time, and which is masterminded here by producer Phil Ramone. Nancy's sweet vocals dance lightly around a mix of strings, woodwinds, and sometimes funky drums that give the album a much stronger kick than you might expect – a groovy little sound that's almost Sunshine Pop, but a bit deeper and more personal overall. Manny Albam provided some great arrangements to the record that sparkle and groove along with some of his better-known jazz work of the period – and in a way, the record has echoes of some of the hipper work done on the Project 3 label of the era, almost reminding us of some of our favorite tunes by Free Design. Nancy wrote all her own material on the set – another thing that makes the record sound especially fresh – and titles include "My Friend Frank", "On The Other Side Of The River", "And Who Will You Be Then", "Epitaph", "Ebony Glass", "You've Come This Way Before", and "Mystic Lady". Laser Light, 1958. Used ... $4.99
A great little meeting of Latin and jazz players – an oft-overlooked album in Puente's catalog of the time! The album features Woody leading a small group of jazz players – including Al Cohn, Paul Quinichette, Billy Byers, and Nick Travis – with extra timbales by Puente and congas by Ray Barretto – and the overall approach is light but tight, with more of a straight jazz component than you'd find on most of Tito's records from the time, but also a wonderfully driven groove that still keeps the rhythms mostly on the Latin end of things! Titles include "Cha Cha Chick", "Tito Meets Woody", "New Cha Cha", "Latin Flight", "Mambo Bambo", "Mambo Herd", and "Fire Island". CD

Arsenio Rodriguez & The Afro-Cubano SoundViva Arsenio – Arsenio Rodriguez & The Afro-Cubano Sound Of Now! ... CD
Bang, 1966. Used ... $19.99
An incredible record and very unique – cut around the same time as Arsenio's rare boogaloo album for Tico Records! Like that session, this one has a style in which Arsenio is featured in a larger group – playing with a raspy edge that really steps out in front of the fuller instruments and voices! The group's a great one – playing here with a few early Latin Soul touches, and in a way that mixes together different modes in a really unusual approach to the grooves. Arsenio's sound is still quite rootsy, but the larger backings are quite tight – and often done with a nod to more popular soul modes of the time. The whole thing was put together by producer Bert Berns, with arrangements by the great Artie Butler – and it's got a freewheeling New York groove that's as close to Latin Soul as Arsenio ever came! Includes Latin Soul versions of "Hang On Sloopy" and "La Bamba", plus the tracks "La Yuca", "Tres Marias", "Randy", "Vaya P'al Monte", and "El Elemento Del Bronx", a groovy guaguanco track! CD

Better Days/We Want Sounds (France), 1978. New Copy ... $11.99
An early moment of genius from Ryuichi Sakamoto – the solo start of a fantastic legacy of electronic music, and a record that's still one of our real go-to discs from his mighty large catalog! The record is a great break from some other, earlier modes of Japanese experimentation – maybe leaner and less long-haired, but also with a sense of wit too – one that's subtle, and never gets in the way with too many simplistic tricks or jokes – but which also really gives the sonic experimentation of the album a nicely down-to-earth sort of vibe. Sakamoto plays a host of keyboards – moogs, Korgs, and others – and the record features slight contributions from some key contemporaries – a mix of guitar lines, percussion, and other elements. Titles include "The End Of Asia", "Plastic Bamboo", "Thousand Knives", "Island Of Woods", "Grasshoppers", and "Das Neue Japanische Elektronische Volkslied". CD

A great chapter in 60s bossa jazz – Zoot Sims "answer" to Stan Getz's bossa work on Verve – recorded in a similar jazz-meets-bossa style, with some great guitar work by Jim Hall! Zoot's solos are a bit tighter and not as laidback as Stan's – giving a more jazz-based sound to the work that makes for a nice change – and most of the tunes feature larger backings from Manny Albam and Al Cohn – never too over-arranged, but with enough of a full swinging sound to set things right. Hall's guitar works surprisingly well in the setting – and titles include "Barquinho De Papel", "Ciume", "Recado Bossa Nova (parts 1 & 2)", and "Cano Canoe". CD

Sly & RobbieLanguage Barrier ... LP
Island, 1985. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Nice 80s digital dub era grooves from Sly & Robbie! For years, We'd back and forth on how we feel about Bill Laswell's slick modern production – but we've really come around on it more recent years, especially considering how influential the 80s style turned out to be in post-millennium music, be reggae or just about any other popular genre. That said, we've never doubt Sly & Robbie, so in the grand scheme of things, this album always boiled down to a winner. Like a lot of mid 80s Material productions, this one pulls in an all star cast to lend a hand to the Rhythm Twins, including Bernie Worrell, Herbie Hancock, Wally Badaru, Manu Dibango, Afrika Bambaata, Bernard Fowler, Mike Hampton, Doug E Fresh and even Bob Dylan. The overall groove is very electro, with 6 long-ish numbers: "Make 'Em Move", "No Name On The Bullet", "Mile (Black Satin)", "Bass & Trouble", "Language Barrier" and "Get To This, Get To That". Scepter, Late 60s. Very Good ... $1.99
Not really the soundtrack for the movie – but a sweet batch of tracks that feature the lovely Dionne Warwick singing the title tune – and stretching out on a host of other great 60s numbers too! The album was recorded in two different sessions, mostly with backings by Burt Bacharach – who always makes his own music sound great – with a bit of extra help from Pat Williams, Manny Albam, and Garry Sherman – who each get a tune to work with. Gone is the dreamy optimism of some of Dionne's earlier albums – and in its place is a more mature, slightly sadder style that's really great. An overlooked gem from reedman Grover Washington – recorded in his later years, but a set that's actually got more of an acoustic style overall – one that goes back to the roots farther than any of Grover's fusion records!
