This is (we feel) one of the greatest male jazz vocal albums of the past thirty years. On this, his first album, Cleveland Watkiss sings hard and true jazz, to lyrics that he's written to songs by Monk, Wayne Shorter, and others. We've been listening to this for years, and it's really irreplaceable in our collection. Too bad everything Watkiss has done since this has been kind of weak, but this excellent album would be enough for an entire career if it was all he ever did! The kings of seedy 80s LA rock do their damnedest to top the their appropriately-titled, mainstream rock conquering Appetite For Destruction with the sprawling pair of Use Your Illusion albums! Use Your Illusion I kicks off with a few fast-charging, swaggery Guns songs that would have fit pretty well on Appetite, but abruptly change courses with a bombastic cover of "Live And Let Die" – and it gets even more grandiose from there – with slow-building ballads, boozy and bluesy hard rockers and more. It's pretty fascinating, in hindsight, just how far the band would go on the two Use Your Illusions albums without completely losing the plot! In some ways this is one of our favorite Prince records, as it has a kind of intimacy that was lacking on later sets – or maybe because the hit "I Wanna Be Your Lover" has such a mad groove! "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" has the sly sound that would run throughout the rest of Prince's better work for years to come – and Chaka Khan would later cover "I Feel for You", and hit large with it in the 80s. The second great album by Kim Fowley's pet Runaways – the album with Lita Ford, Joan Jett and the rest of the gals cloaked in fog and straddling polls on the cover – making them look like a cross between Mott The Hoople and the headliners at that seedy club by the airport! Like the debut, the Queens Of Noise album is total ear candy – and this one is actually probably even a little bit more consistent – and might rock a little harder, too. It's not quite as notorious without the illicit wallop of the group's debut single "Cherry Bomb" – but that's probably the only reason it's not as well remembered. They were still underage at this point, too, so the front-to-back innuendo still resonates! Buy this and the debut album, then take your Donna's CDs back to the mall!
