Bad BrainsBad Brains ... CD
Roir/ORG, 1981. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A hell of a record from one of the key groups who put the "hard" in the American hardcore scene – and a record that's so blisteringly intense, we still sometimes have to check to make sure we've got it on the right speed! Although Bad Brains may fly the flag of the Rastas, and definitely claim a reggae influence – the record manages to both blow away the work of the LA scene with its full-on hardcore tracks, and the UK scene with the group's few reggae-styled numbers. The original was only issued as a cassette, but that hasn't stopped it from being one of the key punk records of the time – and titles include "Sail On", "Don't Need It", "Attitude", "The Regulator", "Banned In DC", "Jah Calling", "Supertouch/Shitfit", "Leaving Babylon", "Fearless Vampire Killers", "I", "Big Take Over", "Pay To Cum", "Right Brigade", "I Luv I Jah", and "Intro". Bad BrainsRock For Light ... LP
PVC/ORG, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 19.99 On September 24, 2021
A seminal album from The Bad Brains – and a set that forever shaped the sound of hardcore in the 80s! These guys are incredibly tight throughout – no doubt because of some previous work in jazz – but they never get overindulgent or too jammy at all – and instead deliver this blinding, blistering version of hardcore that really blows away some of the lesser-trained groups in the underground at the time – full of fire and fierce determination, with a force that's still being felt all these many years later! And despite their rasta roots, there's hardly any reggae-styled moments here – really just a few tracks amidst the triple-time numbers – and probably less than you'd find on an early 80s Clash album! Titles include "Banned In DC", "Sailin' On", "At The Movies", "Right Brigade", "Supertouch", "FVK", "Coptic times", "How Low Can A Punk Get", and "Big Takeover" – and oddly, the whole thing was produced by Ric Ocasek too! LP, Vinyl record album

Thulani DavisNothing But The Music ... Book
Blank Forms, 2021. New Copy ... $15.99 20.00
Fantastic work from an overlooked poet – one who takes up music as her subject matter throughout this collection of work – with individual pieces on Roscoe Mitchell, Henry Threadgill, the Bad Brains, Thelonious Monk, The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, and other key figures in music from the farther side of the spectrum! The poems are wonderful – personal and immediate, and often not nearly as heady as some of the subject matter – which almost makes Davis' writing a great bridge to understanding, especially as the work is often delivered with this sense of immediate observation that historicizes moments of creativity, both hers and the artists within. It's a bit hard to describe the strength of this book in words, but the power leaps from the page right away – given some brief commentary in additional text from Tobi Haslett and Jessica Hagedorn.
