A massive collection of genius from Led Zeppelin – and material that has gone onto become a crucial part of their all-too-small catalog over the years! The work here was all recorded for the BBC in the years 1969 through 1971 – offering up a much wider picture of the group during these formative years, handled by some top-shelf production – which makes these tracks way better than some of the bootlegs and demos that fans had to rely on before these sides hit the record racks. ✨✧ BeatlesBeatles Live At The BBC ... CD
Apple, Early 60s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The Beatles live at the BBC – heard here in a host of rare recordings that were done between March 1962 and June 1965 – pulled from the vaults of the legendary radio station, and with a few cool dialogue bits too! The versions here were all played live on the air, and make for some much-needed alternate takes on the big hits by the Fab Four – and a few American numbers that really show the influence of other styles on their early sound. And since the recordings were done in a top-shelf studio, they're not muddy concert recordings – but actually feel more like some lost EMI studio material from the same period. 71 titles in all – including "Nothin Shakin", "The Hippy Hippy Shake", "Glad All Over", "Rock & Roll Music", "Ticket To Ride", "Ooh My Soul", "Don't Ever Change", "Slow Down", "Matchbox", "I Forgot To Remember To Forget", "The Honeymoon Song", "Lucille", "Can't Buy Me Love", "Taste Of Honey", "From Us To You", "I Got A Woman", "I'll Be On My Way", "Shot Of Rhythm & Blues", "Some Other Guy", "Soldier Of Love", and "Clarabella". ✨✧ Bobbie GentryLive At The BBC ... LP
Capitol, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Amazing work from the great Bobbie Gentry – material recorded at the same time as her big Captiol Records hits in the US, but with a different vibe overall! Bobbie's singing here on a BBC show, one that ran for a number of episodes – and her backings are handled by the great John Cameron (of Donovan and sound library fame) – who shades things in with all these cool little touches that really unlock the darkness in her tunes! The music is fantastic – almost with echoes of Scott Walker at times – and the kind of thing that will make you realize that Gentry was a lot deeper than you might have guessed. ✨✧ Hugh MasekelaLive At The BBC ... CD
Fuel 2000/Varese, 1985/1988. Used ... Out Of Stock
Mid 80s recordings from Hugh Masekela – one set recorded live at the Glastonbury Festival in 1985, the other recorded at a Nelson Mandela concert in 1988. Hugh's style here is greatly expanded from his work of the late 60s – more vocal-oriented, still with African roots, but also stretching out in kind of a pan-global pop sound. The overall feel isn't bad, although the work as a whole lacks the edge of Masekela at his better moments. Titles include "Tonight", "Politician", "Serhasa", "Zulu Wedding", "Stimela", "Amampondo", and "Soweto Blues". CD

Sony, 1967/1969. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Jimi's legendary live recordings for BBC radio and television – live studio sessions from 1967 to 1969 – remastered from BBC tapes and sounding incredible! Most of the tracks feature the trio of Hendrix, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell at their fiery best, on classics like "Foxey Lady", "Fire", "Love Or Confusion", "Purple Haze", "Hey Joe" and more, plus some great, loosier, bluesier performances, such as "Drivin South", "Hear My Train A Coming" and more. The few guest musician appearances are incredibly notable – Alexis Korner plays some slide guitar on "(I'm Your) Hoochie Choochie Man" – and Stevie Wonder plays drums (!!!) on "Jammin" and "I Was Made To Love Her". Also includes the never before released bonus track "Burning Of The Midnight Lamp", a cover of "Day Tripper" and more. 37 tracks on 2 CDs. CD

The young Carole King in her prime – sounding really wonderful here on a well-recorded BBC set from the start of the 70s! As you can guess from the cover image, there's a nicely intimate vibe to the record – a strong focus on Carole's piano work and her unique vocal phrasing, all presented in a very spontaneous, unadorned way. Titles include great recordings of "I Feel The Earth Move", "It's Too Late", "Smackwater Jack", "Way Over Yonder", "Up On The Roof", "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", and "A Natural Woman". ✨✧ Bridget St JohnDandelion Albums & BBC Recordings Collection (Ask Me No Questions/Songs For The Gentle Man/Thank You For/Live BBC) (4CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A massive collection of work from the legendary Bridget St John – a singer who just seems to get better and better the more we listen to her music! First up is the album Ask Me No Questions – a set with the same spare, chilling quality as Nico's first album on Verve! Like Nico, Bridget is amazingly without categorization – a folksinger initially, but one who's working here with a darkly personal quality that goes far beyond most folk work of the 60s! There's almost a Leonard Cohen-like quality to the tracks here – as they're little song-paintings in words that accomplish a tremendous amount with very little – evocative portraits and landscapes that need little more than Bridget's voice and guitar to carry them off. Titles include "Autumn Lullaby", "Like Never Before", "Barefeet & Hot Pavement", "I Like To Be With You In The Sun", "Many Happy Returns", and "Ask Me No Questions". Next is Songs For The Gentle Man – a slightly more expanded version of the sound explored on her debut! Bridget's still very much in a folk-inspired sound here – but like the work of Nick Drake and some of her contemporaries on the British scene, this album has jazzier phrasings and some slightly baroque touches on some tunes – really deepening the feel of the songs, and giving the album a dark depth that we'd easily compare with some of Drake's greatest work. Studio genius Ron Geesin produced the set with a surprising degree of subtlety – just the right amount of edgey undercurrents to unsettle the tunes nicely – never threatening Bridget's presence on the album, but augmenting the moody spectrums that already came across so nicely on the first record. Titles include "A Day A Way", "City Crazy", "Back To Stay", "Seagull Sunday", "If You'd Been There", "Song For The Laird Of Connaught Hall (part 2)", "It Seems Very Strange", and a version of Donovan's "The Pebble & The Man". Next is Thank You For – a slight shift in styles for British singer/songwriter Bridget St John – an album that shakes off a few of the folksy touches of earlier years, but still retains all the dark corners that make her work so great! A few tracks on the album have Bridget working with more traditional accompaniment, but overall most of the record still focuses strongly on voice and guitar – augmented slightly by additional instrumentation that's used sparingly, but beautifully. Most of the tracks here are still by St John – including "Nice", "Thank You For", "Happy Day", and "To Leave Your Cover" – but the album also features a few covers, like Buddy Holly's "Every Day" and Dylan's "Love Minus Zero No Limit". And the final CD features BBC recordings from 1968 to 1972 – including performances for Nite Ride, Top Gear, Peter Sarstedt, Bob Harris, and In Concert. CD

✨✧ Ronnie Scott with Stan Tracey & Mark MurphyBBC Jazz Club 1964 to 1966 ... CD
Rhythm & Blues (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Really wonderful music from British tenorist Ronnie Scott – working here in the very familiar setting of the BBC Jazz Club, one that's almost as comfortable for Scott as his own nite spot in Soho! The set presents three different performances recorded for radio – all with the great Stan Tracey on piano – working here at his Monkish best, which brings out a much more modern quality in Ronnie than you might expect if you only know his recordings from the late 50s! Vocalist Mark Murphy also appears on two tracks – again with a quality that is quite advanced, as his work on the UK scene in the 60s really helped Mark pave the way for the vocal advances he'd express in the 70s back in the US. Murphy sings on "Waltz For Debby" and "Music That Makes Me Dance/When She Makes Music" – and other titles include "Sweet Lotus Blossom", "Sweet & Lovely", "Close Your Eyes", "What's New", "The Night Is Young", and "I'll Be Seeing You". ✨✧ Long John Baldry & SteampacketLong John Baldry & Steampacket – BBC Broadcasts 1965/1966 ... LP
Rhythm & Blues (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Long John Baldry is best remembered for one massive hit in the early 70s – but at the start of his career, he was one of the key artists on the UK scene mixing together blues, soul, R&B, and even a touch of jazz – as you'll hear here in a series of rare BBC material that captures Baldry with two very hip groups! The first half of the record features John on vocals as part of Steampacket – a group that also features a very young Rod Stewart, plus the great Julie Driscoll on vocals too – backed by the Trinity combo of organist Brian Auger – who would soon go on to make some great records with Julie. The second half features Baldry's Hoochie Coochie Men – a group with John as the sole singer, plus Al Gay and Stan Robinson on saxes, and Geoff Bradford on guitar. Most of the tracks on the record are mod remakes of American tunes – including "How Long Will It Last", "It's All Right", "Five Long Years", "Speak Your Piece", "Lord Remember Me", "Going To A Go Go", "Jump For Joy", "Didn't Want To Do It", and "The Drifter". The Faces gave us a handful of fantastic records during the early 70s – but alongside those studio sets, their antics as a live group were even more stunning – as you'll hear on some of this material recorded for the BBC at the time! The tunes aren't as totally freewheeling and over the top as their work on stage, but are still pretty great – and show that rawness at the core that has continued to give the group power that's lived on for many years, even past the more mainstream career of Rod Stewart too! Stewart is incredible here on vocals – and the rest of the group are impeccable instrumentally – and titles include a 1971 show with "Had Me A Real Good Time", "Love In Vain", "Oh Lord I'm Browned Off", and "Maybe I'm Amazed" – plus more live versions of "I'm Losing You", "Twistin The Night Away", and "It's All Over Now" – plus a great blend of "Too Much Woman/Street Fighting Man". A record that marks a slight shift for Family – maybe a more focused approach to songwriting, yet one that's still very much their own – given the undeniably wild vocals of the legendary Roger Chapman! Chapman's knocking it out of the park here – even nudging aside John Wetton, who doesn't sing as much as before – as the group swerve between hard rock moments and some even cooler, artier touches – on titles that include "Burlesque", "Bolero Babe", "Coronation", "Dark Eyes", "Broken Nose", "My Friend The Sun", "Glove' , "Top Of The Hill", and "Ready To Go". FamilyIt's Only A Movie (2CD edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
United Artists/Esoteric (UK), 1973. New Copy 2CD ... $17.99 21.99
The final studio album from Family, and a set that really has the group coming down strongly on all the best elements they crafted together on previous records! The vocals of Roger Chapman, as always, are a real charm – some of the most distinct of his generation, and perfectly at home in rootsier modes and more hard rocking passages – which are balanced out nicely on the record, and given a lean push forward with great guitars and keyboards – but never in a style that's too polished or commercial. In fact, given the lack of huge chart success for the group – at least on our side of the ocean – it's a strong testament to the quality of their work that they kept on going this strongly. Titles include the instrumental "Banger", plus "Sweet Desiree", "Suspicion", "Leroy", "Buffet Tea For Two", "Boom Bang", and "It's Only A Movie". 2CD edition features lots of bonus tracks – the single cuts "Drink To You" and "Stop This Car" – and early versions of "Boom Bang", "Suspicion", and "Stop This Car" – plus 14 more live tracks all recorded for the BBC in 1973! Cherry Red (UK), Early 80s. Used 6CD ... $29.99
A complete run of music from the Revillos – a group who only gave the world two full studio albums in their initial run, then recorded live albums later in the 90s – all of which are here, along with a whole host of bonus material too! The Revillos always had a bit of a retro look to them – and although they grew up in the post-punk years of the UK, their style is a mad mash-up of new wave modes and 50s elements – maybe vaguely in the territory of the B52s, but with a style that's very much the group's own! This set brings together a massive 140 tracks in all – the full albums Rev Up and Attack Of The Revillos, the latter in two different versions – plus the sets Live & On Fire In Japan, and Totally Alive – and then two more live recordings from 1981, one British and one American – plus lots of bonus tracks from singles, some John Peel sessions, and other BBC material too – in a hefty box with a big booklet of notes. Jazz In Britain (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $14.99 39.98
Some of the greatest work we've ever heard from legendary British guitarist Ray Russell – a set that was not issued to the public at the time, but recorded especially for the BBC – and with a sound that's every bit as striking as his famous albums for CBS! There's maybe a slightly more inside vibe going on here – music that often has these nice modal currents, but still delivered with plenty of Ray's unusual flair and style on the guitar – in a lineup that also includes the great Harry Beckett on trumpet and flugelhorn, plus Tony Roberts on saxes, Nick Evans on trombone, Daryl Runswick on bass, and Alan Rushton on drums – a lineup who seem to understand each other intimately, whether in moments of free improvisation or cohesive swing! The record's a great addition to Russell's too-small catalog from this time – and titles include "Disinterested Bystander", "Forget To Remember", "Triple Goddess", and "Rites & Rituals". Rocket/Esoteric (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $17.99 19.99
A set that's got a slightly different vibe than previous Stackridge albums – yet which also continues that special sort of hard to define quality that always made the group so unique! There's a feel to the set that's maybe a bit in keeping with the image on the cover – slight touches of an older carnivalesque aesthetic, yet filtered through that cool British 70s production style – compressing any prog influences down to modes that often have some very slight glammy touches around the edges, which also steps up some of the hooks on the tunes as well! Titles include "Benjamin's Giant Onion", "Grease Paint Smiles", "Spin Around The Room", "Rufus T Firefly", "No One's More Important Than The Earthworm", and "Highbury Incident". 2CD set features a full bonus CD of live BBC material! MCA/Esoteric (UK), 1972. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 25.99
Really beautiful work from Stackridge – an early set, and one that's got the group working in more prog-oriented territory overall – yet still with a tightness to the tunes that avoids any side-long jams or solos that overwhelm the vocals and melody! Instrumentation includes bits of violin and flute next to more conventional guitar – and the tunes have that very special Stackridge blend, a bit hard to describe, but very different than so many American groups of the period. Titles include "Keep On Clucking", "Teatime", "Anyone For Tennis", "Syracuse The Elephant", "Father Frankenstein Is Behind Your Pillow", and "Lummy Days". 2CD version features the singles-only tracks "Slark", "Purple Spaceships Over Yatton", "C'Est La Vie", and "Do The Stanley" – plus 8 more tracks from a BBC concert in 1972! MCA/Esoteric (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A wonderful showcase for the wide-ranging talents of Stackridge – as the set features key production work from George Martin, who really has a way of expanding the sounds at the core of their music! Although Martin's best known for his famous Beatles work of the 60s, the maestro's touch in the studio seems to bring out even more here with a group like Stackridge – really focusing the energy of their songs, while also giving them a larger sonic platform to work from – larger arrangements at times, but never in a way that seems to cover up the energy at the core! Titles include "Pinafore Days", "The Last Plimsoll", "Humiliation", "Road To Venezuela", "Fundamentally Yours", "Dangerous Bacon", "The Galloping Gaucho", and "To The Sun & The Moon". 2CD edition features a full bonus disc of BBC recordings! A record that's graced by a fantastic 70s cover by Hipnosis, and one that's got exactly the kind of groovy UK sound that you might expect! Stackridge have this blend of hard rock elements with some of the tighter, more compressed production that was coming into play in British studios – which makes for an especially great, very cool touch on the vocals as they mix with the guitars and larger arrangements – almost a touch of Jeff Lynne or Godley & Creme at times, with some cool harmony vocals at points that really send the record strongly! Titles include "Percy The Penguin", "Marigold Conjunction", "32 West Mall", "Slark", "Let There Be Lids", "Dora The Female Explorer", and "Grande Piano". Illegal Arts, 1980s/1990s/Mid 2000s. Used 2 CDs ... $18.99
Bedrock beatcraft and DJ mix mastery from Steve Stein – including the hugely important Double Dee & Steinski mixes of the early 80s – paired up with solid later work for this excellent 2CD compilation! The Double Dee & Steinski stuff really couldn't be more important to the turntablist scene of the mid 80s, and its influence stretches up to and beyond the mash up DJs of the 00s. Monumental DJ funk and deftly blended samples. Astounding! Disc 1 is the retrospective material – featuring benchmark Double Dee & Steinski mixes: "The Payoff Mix", "Lesson 2 (James Brown Mix)", "Lesson 3 (History Of Hip Hop)", "Jazz" and "Voice Mail (Sugarhill Mix)" – plus the Steinski tracks "The Motorcade Sped On", "I'm Wild About That Thing", "Ain't No Thing", "Number Three On Flight Eleven" and more. Disc 2 is Nothing To Fear – A Rough Mix By Steinski – done for Solid Steel Productions and BBC London – 28 continuous cuts including "Swingset (10 beautiful girls mix)", "The Id (small world mix)", "By All Means Necessary (Malcolm & Bobby mix)", "I Like It Like That (Scratch It One Time mix)" "Country Grammar (hydro mix)", "Funk Construction (Prodigal Son mix)" and lots more. It's all in the title – it's a rougher set with the scratch & cut effects, bit not as dance club bubbly as other Steinski work. CD

That's a pretty crazy image on the cover, and there's some pretty crazy images within – as this well-done book looks at the way the BBC conceived of presenting a public, permanent face to its ephmeral broadcast identity in the early 20th century – through the creation of the modernist masterpiece Broadcast House in London! The book begins with the construction of that landmark building, then moves on to other topics that deal with the interplay between the new ideas on radio and the shifting setting of London in the years before and through WWII – served up here with black and white images alongside some very well-penned critical text by the author. 331 pages, hardcover, with black and white images. Direction/Grapefruit (UK), Late 1960s. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera weren't the biggest group on the British scene of the late 60s, but they were certainly one of the coolest – as you'll hear on this massive collection that brings together all their key work of the time! First up is the self-titled debut album – stunner of a set from a group who should have been huge – especially given the sharpness and wit of this debut album! Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera bring together all the best strands of up and coming Brit rock of the time – a bit of psych undercut with some bluesy elements, marked by a moddish smirk that really keeps the whole thing punched-up throughout – no overindulgence, no easy mark for a hit – just a very individual sensibility that few of the group's underground contemporaries could match! These guys come across with all the personality of The Who in Happy Jack/Magic Bus years – and have a similar use and distance of trippy elements of the time – almost tongue in cheek, but just because they find a way to shift between them and straighter rock so easily. Songs are all great, and really well-written – and apart from a version of Oscar Brown Jr's "I Was Cool", the set features original material that includes "Mother Writes", "Mary Jane", "Flames", "Lookin For A Happy Life", and "Walter Sly Meets Bill Bailey". Next is the group's second album Ride A Hustler's Dream – a set that maybe has the group bringing in more blues influences to the music at times, but mostly as a way to let both the guitar work and vocals get even fuller and strongly expressed – which means that when the psychedelic elements come into the mix, there's an even more powerful vibe than on their debut album too! Titles include "Black Jack Davy", "Ride A Hustler's Dream", "Honey By", "Anna Dance Square", "Depression", "Warm Day In July", and the very cool "Raga" – and a great remake of "Eleanor Rigby". 3CD set features the debut album in a rare promo-only mono mix, plus 34 bonus tracks that include "There's A Hole In My Pocket", "She Keeps Giving Me These Feelings", "The Painter", "And I Remember", "Talk Of The Devil", "Dreamy", "Volcano", "A Quick B", and lots more – including singles and BBC tracks too! One of our favorite moments in the strong run of records from Family – a set that's still strongly defined by the vocals and songwriting of Roger Chapman, but which also has a lot more going on as well! John Wetton's joined the group for this album, and adds in bass and a bit of vocals – and seems to really jump start their sound in a great way – and the production is great, too – really opening up with some of those new styles that were helping change the UK scene as progressive acts found a way to pack more into a smaller space – resulting in shorter tunes that still bristled with plenty of excitement! The vocal interplay is especially great – and titles include "Between Blue & Me", "Spanish Tide", "Burning Bridges", "Take Your Partners", "Crinkly Grin", "Larf & Sing", "Save Some For Thee", and "Satdy Barfly". This edition features the bonus cuts "In My Own Time" and "Seasons" added to the main album – and CD2 and CD3 feature rare material recorded for the BBC – 21 more live tracks, with lots of great readings of other tunes as well as album material! Possibly one of the best-remembered albums by John Mayall's legendary Blues Breakers combo – thanks to vocals and guitar from a young Eric Clapton! Clapton at this point is way fresher than in later years – not prone to cliches, and still coming across with a raw, edgey power that is drenched in American blues tradition. An insanely big batch of Beach Boys rarities – a set that features 60 previously unreleased tracks, in a bundle that includes 174 titles in all – packaged in an ultra-cool puffy-covered book! The book's style is meant to replicate a high school yearbook from the old days – a format that's quite fitting for the package, given that the collection documents the group's 50 years in music – with photos, archive material, yearbook-like inscriptions from the group members, and even a copy of Brian Wilson's handwritten high school essay "My Philosophy"! A key transitional album for The Kinks – a record that took them from the lighter "picture postcard" rock of their late 60s albums, into the headier concepts that would mark most of their early 70s work! The concept here is fortunately a light one – a faux-hillbilly sort of groove, carried off by Ray and the group in a nice mix of London Muswell and East Tennessee. The tunes are nicely short and focused, with some older styles of music that almost give the record a Tom Waits-ish feel at times – and titles include "Muswell Hillbilly", "Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues", "20th Century Man", "Skin & Bone", "Alcohol", and "Have A Cuppa Tea". The rest of the group features Phil Markowitz on piano, Ron McClure on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – and although, since the set was recorded in 2007, it's not the same "vintage tapes" style as other Resonance releases, it's still got an equally crucial vibe – a key look at a musical moment that we might have otherwise missed. The near-complete work of one of the all-time great but overlooked groups of the UK scene of the late 60s – a group who jumped between a few different labels, mostly issued a handful of singles, yet managed to create a huge amount of magic at the time! You'll not find The Mirage in the history books, but they definitely gave the UK scene a few great singles, enough to get them onto the BBC – where a few of these tracks were recorded – and somehow managed to keep on working on great music, despite record label politics that would have buried most other acts of the generation. There's a tuneful approach to psych that begins some of the material, with maybe the odd freakbeat moment too – a quality that comes out even more strongly as the group morphs through a few later identities, including Yellow Pages, Portebello Explosion, and the really great Jawbone – the last of whom finally got a chance to record a full length album! The 3CD package divides up nicely – CD1 features singles and BBC tracks by The Mirage, plus a few by Portebello Explosion and Yellow Pages; CD2 features some stunning unheard outtakes that are maybe even more amazing than some Mirage singles; and CD3 features the full Jawbone album from 1970, a set that echoes some of the earlier moments, but with even sharper instrumentation and a nicely compressed sense of production. 3CD set features 60 tracks in all, and very detailed notes on the group and their music! A special version of this classic! Where would electronic pop be without Gary Numan's "Cars"? Alongside Kraftwerk's classic 80s albums and Yellow Magic Orchestra's first LP, this album by Gary Numan ranks as one of the most essential synth driven LPs on a creative level – and it rightly brought the sound to the masses at the time, too – thanks to a brilliant pop sensibility, awash with robotic tones that will forever vindicate 80s new wave. This "first recordings" set expands the album to double-length – with demo versions of "Cars", "Films", "Complex", "ME", "Conversation", "Tracks", "Metal", "Airlane", "Observer", and "Conversation" – plus 2009 remasters of "Random", "Asylum", "Oceans", and "Photograph" – and BBC Peel Session versions of "Cars", "Films", "Conversation", and "Airlane". ✨✧ Tony Rivers with The Castaways and Harmony GrassMove In A Little Closer – The Complete Recordings 1963 to 1970 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), 1960s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Pure genius from the great Tony Rivers – a harmony pop talent who's not that well known on our side of the Atlantic, but who was one of the key maestros of Sunshine Pop on the UK scene of the 60s! Tony's not entirely at the Brian Wilson level, but he's not far off either – and his work here is completely wonderful throughout, and shows not just a fantastic ear for harmony vocal arrangements, but also for getting the best out of those vocals in the studio! The package is divided up into three sections – CD1 features Tony's group The Castaways on a set of 31 studio recordings, CD2 features his Harmony Grass on another 24 studio recordings, and CD3 features material by both groups recorded live on the BBC – an additional 33 tracks that have the vocals sounding really wonderful even without some heavy studio production! The Castaways material has a bit more twang and rock, especially in the live recordings – and the Harmony Grass material has a near-perfect sound that's like the best California pop productions of the late 60s. The massive package is overflowing with gems – and comes with a huge booklet of notes that finally give Tony Rivers his due. CD

✨✧ Sex PistolsNever Mind The Bollocks (40th anniversary deluxe 3CD & DVD set) ... CD
Virgin/Universal (France), 1977. Used 3CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
The only real full length document ever issued by the Sex Pistols – an album that came out almost as the group was falling apart – yet one that's still gone on to have a hell of a place in rock and roll history! There's no denying the power of these songs, even all these many years later – and together, this mix of important singles and key album cuts offers up a bleak picture of modern life that still resonates pretty darn strongly all these many years later! The whole thing's great, and as instrumentally intense as its lyrics – with classics that include "Holidays In The Sun", "Bodies", "Anarchy In The UK", "No Feelings", "Problems", "Pretty Vacant", "God Save The Queen", "New York", "EMI", "Liar", "Submission", and "Seventeen". This 40th Anniversary box set edition is a stunner, too – with a second disc of studio rarities, Dave Goodman demos and Chris Thomas demos, with 21 tracks. Disc 3 features 2 separate 1977 concert recordings, one in Norway the other in Sweden. Includes a DVD, too, with the legendary Riverboat Party, plus more live footage from Cornwall and Stockholm, plus bonus material including promo videos and a BBC interview. CD

✨✧ Sandie ShawSandie Shaw On Radio & TV 1965 to 1970 ... LP
1960s (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A rare slice of work from the great Sandie Shaw – material she recorded for broadcasts, at the time she was also serving up her classic material for Pye Records – easily some of the coolest, grooviest Brit female pop of the time! The presentation here is a nice change from the famous singles – in that although there's a fair bit of material penned by Chris Andrews, who gave Sandie some hits, there's also some nice covers of tunes of the time too – done in some straighter readings for BBC Top Gear shows, and given a different spin on some Shindig recordings, and a number of tracks from the Sandie Shaw Supplement program! The set's got 19 tracks in all – and titles include "I'd Be Far Better Off Without You", "Girl Don't Come", "Homeward Bound", "Route 66", "Day Tripper/Ticket To Ride", "Coconut Grove", "Love Letters", and "Do You Know The Way To San Jose". ✨✧ SlitsCut (2CD deluxe edition) ... CD
Island (UK), 1979. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Still one of THE standout records of the post-punk years – the simple but effective dub statement of three London ladies with decidedly left wing politics! The record's in a format that would later be copped by dozens of groups – one that mixes together post-punk and heavy dub – the former of which is served up with some nice rough guitars and crackly vocals, and the latter which is done even better with some super-solid production by Dennis Bovell! Titles include "Shoplifting", "Spend Spend Spend", "Instant Hit", "Newtown", "Ping Pong Affair", and the seminal "Typical Girls". This 2CD deluxe edition is fully loaded – featuring the original album remastered, unreleased demos, b-sides, outtakes and BBC sessions, plus a 28 page booklet with new interviews. Bonus material includes Peel Sessions for "Vindictive", "So Tough", "New Town" and more, demos for "Instant Hit", "Spend Spend Spend", "Adventures Close To Home" and more, rough mixes of Shoplifting", "Typical Girls" and more. 40 tracks on 2CDs! ✨✧ ZombiesZombie Heaven (4 CD box set) ... CD
Big Beat/Ace (UK), Late 60s. Used 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Heaven is right – as this 4CD set is our idea of the afterlife! The package brings together a wealth of rare work by the Zombies – not only new versions of tunes from their legendary Odyssey and Oracle, but also rare "lost" late tracks (recorded before the band split up and never issued), live material, early singles, and even some extra cool bonus bits – ads for the group, some done by the group, and the tracks that the Zombies did for the film Bunny Lake Is Missing! On top of all that, it's got a monstrously cool booklet, with loads of cool photos, great notes, and the kind of information that makes this set way more than the usual snoozy box set. And unlike the Pet Sounds box set, it's not just 4CDs of the same songs over and over again! Our idea of heaven, truly – and filled with 119 magical tunes that we never tire of hearing! The first CD features early tracks – singles and the Begin Here album. CD2 features Odessey & Oracle, plus the whole lost rare album. CD3 features more rare tracks from the studio – demos, alternate versions, and more. CD4 features 29 tracks, live on the BBC – including a jingle for the Kenny Everett Show! CD

✨✧ ActionShadows & Reflections – The Complete Recordings 1964 to 1968 (4CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The complete recordings of The Action – a UK group that we'd put right up there with early work by The Who, and everything done by The Creation at the same time! Like both of those famous combos, these guys start out in mod territory, but already seem to be pushing forward for something new – maybe an echo of psych to come, although these guys never lasted long enough for that scene – or maybe just this richer, deeper approach to songwriting and performance that was never just content to copy American modes of the period! These guys grow a hell of a lot over the course of four short years – as you'll hear here, on 86 tracks that include their Parlophone masters, the lost Rolled Gold material from 1967 and 1968, unusual stereo tracks and other rare material recorded at Abbey Road, BBC live tracks, and even a number of unusual singles and side projects too. The whole thing comes in a great book-styled package – with graphics as groovy as the music, and lots more information too! CD

✨✧ Dave GoldHeaven On Their Minds (180 gram pressing – with download) ... LP
My Only Desire (UK), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Unreleased work from the BBC Archives of the 70s – a stunning large group session with a very groovy vibe! Dave Gold isn't as much of a giant as some of the other British leaders of the time – but he's got a wonderful way with the group here, and makes the music move with some of the funky currents that he brought to his work for the KPM Sound Library – where you might know Dave from some key albums! Gold was also working as the leader of the jazzy group on a production of Jesus Christ Superstar – and he has the lineup here take off on a soaring funky version of that show's "Heaven On Their Minds" – a great cut that's worth the price of admission alone, served up with a mix of tenor and flute from Brian Ashe, baritone from Ronnie Ross, electric piano from Cliff Hall, and guitar from John Girvan – amidst a larger group of trumpets, trombones, and alto saxes. Other cuts include the gold originals "O'Connell Street" and "Nostalgia" – both groovy tracks with an MPS big band vibe – plus a version of the Jimmy Webb tune "Pocketful Of Keys". ✨✧ PlainsongFollowing Amelia – The 1972 Recordings & More (6CD set) ... CD
Elektra/Lemon (UK), 1972. New Copy 6CD ... Out Of Stock
Plainsong were a short-lived group who are best known for one album – but they had a heck of a legacy, and recorded way more work than was issued at the time! The set kicks off with their classic In Search Of Amelia Earhart album – a wonderfully warm, wonderfully solid set of rootsy rock from this group headed by Ian Matthews! The set moves past some of Matthews' earlier efforts – a bit tighter at times, yet still far from any country rock cliches at all – definitely done at a time when this mixing of modes was still a very fresh concept for musicians like Ian, who were more than willing to find a lot of paths of their own. Some of the headier moments really make great use of the darker guitar corners of Andy Roberts – who works in subtle, but great ways – and the set also features a nice mix of acoustic and electric elements, served up sparely, and recorded in a really great way. Titles include "Yo Yo Man", "Louise", "Call The Tune", "Raider", "Side Roads", "I'll Fly Away", and "For The Second Time". Given the already-huge legacy in music that Matthews had by the time of 1972, it's no surprise that there was a lot more recorded during the time – including the group's originally-unissued second record, Now We Are 3 – included here with an insane amount of other material too! CD1 features the Amelia Earhart album with bonus tracks and 1973 concert material. CD2 features Now We Are 3, with bonus tracks and added Dance Goes On tracks. CD3 features BBC sessions with John Peel – and CD4 features more BBC with Bob Harris, and Old Grey Whistle Test material. CD5 features a reunited version of the group recording live in 1993, 1997, and 2012 – and CD6 features more later material, billed For The Second Time – including some re-recordings of the original debut tracks. Over 50% of the box set has never been issued before – and there's a massive amount of material! CD
