BBC Radiophonic WorkshopSoundhouse ... CD
BBC/Silva Screen, 1983. Used ... $11.99 14.99
Weird and wonderful sounds from one of the coolest spots in the universe – the legendary BBC Radiophonic Workshop, home to a mix of surprisingly groovy and experimental electronic music! This album was issued on the 25th anniversary of the sonic institution – and it features a strong mix of older analogue styles with some more 80s-oriented electronics – yet still with all the depth you'd expect from the Radiophonic Workshop during its classic years! These aren't tinny slasher keyboards, or electro pop programs – and instead, the music here is as thoughtful and compelling as the sounds created during the Delia Derbyshire generation – but are handled by artists who include Peter Howell, Paddy Kingsland, Dick Mills, Jonathan Gibbs, Elizabeth Parker, and Malcolm Clarke. Titles include "Mainstream", "Radiophonic Rock", "Computers In The Real World", "Rallyman", "Seascape", "Land & People", "Houdini's Magic Box", "Ghost In The Water", "Planet Earth", and "Catch The Wind". FacesFaces At The BBC – The Complete BBC Concert & Session Recordings 1970 to 1973 (8CD/blu-ray set) ... CD
Rhino, Early 1970s. New Copy 8CDs ... $109.99 119.99
The Faces gave us a handful of fantastic records during the early 70s – but alongside those studio sets, their antics as a live group were even more stunning – as you'll hear on some of this material recorded for the BBC at the time! The tunes aren't as totally freewheeling and over the top as their work on stage, but are still pretty great – and show that rawness at the core that has continued to give the group power that's lived on for many years, even past the more mainstream career of Rod Stewart too! Stewart is incredible here on vocals – and the rest of the group are impeccable instrumentally – and this massive set brings together more BBC material than has ever been issued before! The 8CDs each have full shows – and for the punters, here's the full rundown: CD1 features five tracks from John Peel's Sunday Concert 7/5/70, five tracks from John Peel's Sunday Concert 11/29/70. CD2 features eight tracks from John Peel's Sunday Concert 5/23/71. CD3 features seven tracks from Sounds For Saturday 4/1/72. CD4 features fourteen tracks from John Peel's Sunday Concert 2/26/72. CD5 features thirteen tracks from a never-issued concert in 1973. CD6 features fourteen tracks from BBC In Concert 4/21/73. CD7 features four tracks from Top Gear 3/28/70, three tracks from Dave Lee Travis Sunday Show 3/15/70, three tracks from Top Gear 9/19/70, and two Christmas tracks from Top Gear 12/26/70. CD8 features four tracks from Sounds Of The Seventies 5/3/71, and three more from Top Gear 10/6/71. Blu-Ray features all seven tracks from the Sounds For Saturday show on 4/1/72. Also features a 48 page book – and comes in a 12" square book! CD

1960s (UK), 1965. New Copy ... $27.99 29.99
Fantastic work from one of the most important modern jazz groups on the UK scene in the 60s – a really legendary combo who set the tone for so many others to come! The group is co-led by Don Rendell on tenor and other saxes – already a giant for previous recordings in a modern idiom – and features trumpeter Ian Carr in the other lead spot – working here in a more conventional jazz mode before his famous fusion records of the 70s at the helm of Nucleus! The set also features a version of the lineup that still had the great Michael Garrick on piano – a player who would soon go on to greatness leading his own group – and titles include "Garrison 65", "She'll Be Back", "Interplay", "Big City Strut", and "Trane's Mood". Bridget St JohnDandelion Albums & BBC Recordings Collection (Ask Me No Questions/Songs For The Gentle Man/Thank You For/Live BBC) (4CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $26.99 34.99
A massive collection of work from the legendary Bridget St John – a singer who just seems to get better and better the more we listen to her music! First up is the album Ask Me No Questions – a set with the same spare, chilling quality as Nico's first album on Verve! Like Nico, Bridget is amazingly without categorization – a folksinger initially, but one who's working here with a darkly personal quality that goes far beyond most folk work of the 60s! There's almost a Leonard Cohen-like quality to the tracks here – as they're little song-paintings in words that accomplish a tremendous amount with very little – evocative portraits and landscapes that need little more than Bridget's voice and guitar to carry them off. Titles include "Autumn Lullaby", "Like Never Before", "Barefeet & Hot Pavement", "I Like To Be With You In The Sun", "Many Happy Returns", and "Ask Me No Questions". Next is Songs For The Gentle Man – a slightly more expanded version of the sound explored on her debut! Bridget's still very much in a folk-inspired sound here – but like the work of Nick Drake and some of her contemporaries on the British scene, this album has jazzier phrasings and some slightly baroque touches on some tunes – really deepening the feel of the songs, and giving the album a dark depth that we'd easily compare with some of Drake's greatest work. Studio genius Ron Geesin produced the set with a surprising degree of subtlety – just the right amount of edgey undercurrents to unsettle the tunes nicely – never threatening Bridget's presence on the album, but augmenting the moody spectrums that already came across so nicely on the first record. Titles include "A Day A Way", "City Crazy", "Back To Stay", "Seagull Sunday", "If You'd Been There", "Song For The Laird Of Connaught Hall (part 2)", "It Seems Very Strange", and a version of Donovan's "The Pebble & The Man". Next is Thank You For – a slight shift in styles for British singer/songwriter Bridget St John – an album that shakes off a few of the folksy touches of earlier years, but still retains all the dark corners that make her work so great! A few tracks on the album have Bridget working with more traditional accompaniment, but overall most of the record still focuses strongly on voice and guitar – augmented slightly by additional instrumentation that's used sparingly, but beautifully. Most of the tracks here are still by St John – including "Nice", "Thank You For", "Happy Day", and "To Leave Your Cover" – but the album also features a few covers, like Buddy Holly's "Every Day" and Dylan's "Love Minus Zero No Limit". And the final CD features BBC recordings from 1968 to 1972 – including performances for Nite Ride, Top Gear, Peter Sarstedt, Bob Harris, and In Concert. CD

The Beatles live at the BBC – heard here in a host of rare recordings that were done between March 1962 and June 1965 – pulled from the vaults of the legendary radio station, and with a few cool dialogue bits too! The versions here were all played live on the air, and make for some much-needed alternate takes on the big hits by the Fab Four – and a few American numbers that really show the influence of other styles on their early sound. And since the recordings were done in a top-shelf studio, they're not muddy concert recordings – but actually feel more like some lost EMI studio material from the same period. 71 titles in all – including "Nothin Shakin", "The Hippy Hippy Shake", "Glad All Over", "Rock & Roll Music", "Ticket To Ride", "Ooh My Soul", "Don't Ever Change", "Slow Down", "Matchbox", "I Forgot To Remember To Forget", "The Honeymoon Song", "Lucille", "Can't Buy Me Love", "Taste Of Honey", "From Us To You", "I Got A Woman", "I'll Be On My Way", "Shot Of Rhythm & Blues", "Some Other Guy", "Soldier Of Love", and "Clarabella". Gearbox (UK), 1962. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Killer work from British tenor giant Tubby Hayes – issued here for the first time ever, and material that's every bit as great as his famous Fontana Records sides from the 60s! These tracks are well-recorded gems from the BBC archives – material recorded by Hayes for a special program, and featuring a largeish group of top-shelf players who include Jimmy Deuchar on trumpet, Keith Christie on trombone, Johnny Scott on alto and flute, Vic Ash on tenor and bass clarinet, Harry Klein on baritone sax, David Snell on harp, and Gordon Beck on piano – all regular associates of Hayes, working as tightly here as on some of his best arrangements from studio dates of the 60s. There's a mix of modernism and solid soul that's pure Tubby all the way through – tremendous on his solo moments, but sparkling throughout as well – exactly the kind of record that will make you fall in love with his talents. Titles include "Early Morning Afterthoughts", "Down In The Village", "Souriya", "Take Your Partners For The Blues", and "Peace". LP, Vinyl record album

Esoteric (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A smoking set of work from the Edgar Broughton Band – a wealth of live recordings done for the BBC, all at the same time the group were really making waves on Harvest Records! If you don't know the EBB, they're amazing – kind of gruff and gritty – not really hard rock, but less polished than most prog groups too – often with this long-haired, freak flag flying approach that comes through maybe even more strongly here in the live material than on some of their studio sessions! And while some groups can come across super-polished in a BBC setting, these guys really seem to want to shake up the staid broadcasting giant – and really push things a lot in these performances. The 4CD set features a massive 40 tracks in all – some of which are quite long – from a variety of programs on CD 1, then specific performances – so that CD2 features a John Peel Sunday Concert from 2/25/71, CD3 and 4 features Radio 1 In Concert from 5/11/72 – a very long show presented in both the original broadcast mono, and the stereo take for BBC Transcription services. And, in the best Esoteric fashion, the packaging is great and there's a big booklet of notes! CD

Capitol (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. Used 8CDs ... Out Of Stock
A stunning tribute to the wonderful Bobbie Gentry – and maybe the first package to really show the world how much she has to offer past her one classic crossover hit! Bobbie started out like a rocket with the country gem "Ode To Billie Joe" – a tune she wrote herself, and followed with lots of other great music on the original debut album here – which then set the scene for a great expansion into other modes, as Capitol Records really opened up their resources for Gentry to record in the late 60s! This huge package features everything that Bobbie ever recorded for the label – not just some great full albums, but also some rare singles, demos, and alternate takes – plus 75 unreleased tracks (!) – and then a full incredible album Live At The BBC – which features 26 tracks of Gentry really knocking it out of the park. The BBC material has these really dark, brooding orchestrations – almost like Bobbie's getting some Scott Walker late 60s backings – and the whole box set might be worth it alone for that double-length album! The package is a very cool 10" slipcover – with a huge booklet of notes, postcards, lyric inserts, and more – 177 tracks in all, with albums that include Ode To Billie Joe, The Delta Sweete, Local Gentry, Bobbie Gentry & Glen Campbell, Touch Em With Love, Fancy, Patchwork, and Live At The BBC. United Artists/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99 24.99 About April 4, 2025
A record that has Family very much at the top of their game – and working in a format that some of their contemporaries were trying on record at the time – serving up one side of live material, and one set in the studio! Although the group are sometimes linked to the prog scene of the time, there's a quality here that's often more hard rock overall, especially on the live material – very thunderous drums and heady guitar work, and vocals from Roger Chapman singing at the rawer side of his spectrum! Titles include "Part Of The Load", "Willow Tree", "Good News Bad News", "Holding The Compass", "Anyway", and "Normans". 2CD edition is overflowing with bonus material – the cuts "Normans (US LP edit)", "Hung Up Down (1970 single)", "Strange Band (studio)", and "The Weavers Answer (1970 single)" – plus a bonus CD with a dozen more tracks from a BBC Top Gear session in September, 1970! Reprise/Esoteric (UK), 1971. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 34.99
One of our favorite moments in the strong run of records from Family – a set that's still strongly defined by the vocals and songwriting of Roger Chapman, but which also has a lot more going on as well! John Wetton's joined the group for this album, and adds in bass and a bit of vocals – and seems to really jump start their sound in a great way – and the production is great, too – really opening up with some of those new styles that were helping change the UK scene as progressive acts found a way to pack more into a smaller space – resulting in shorter tunes that still bristled with plenty of excitement! The vocal interplay is especially great – and titles include "Between Blue & Me", "Spanish Tide", "Burning Bridges", "Take Your Partners", "Crinkly Grin", "Larf & Sing", "Save Some For Thee", and "Satdy Barfly". This edition features the bonus cuts "In My Own Time" and "Seasons" added to the main album – and CD2 and CD3 feature rare material recorded for the BBC – 21 more live tracks, with lots of great readings of other tunes as well as album material! Lars GullinLars Gullin Vol 3 – Late Summer 1954 to 1955 ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), Mid 50s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Very unusual work from the legendary Lars Gullin – captured here in a range of different settings! The first half of work on the CD features titles from a record issued in the US as Lars Gullin With The Moretone Singers – a session that features the master baritonist blowing alongside the Moretone Singers – a vocal ensemble who sings in cascading tones that kind of shade and color the background. The approach is different than other jazz vocal group records – in that the singers don't really handle solos or songs – they mostly just come in chorus formation to support the group, in the manner of a string ensemble. The sound's dark and moody, and actually makes a surprisingly wonderful backdrop for Gullin's majestic horn – really setting him free from the rest of the group, not having to worry about swing, just exploring space and sound in a way that's rare for his albums of the time! Titles include "Late Date", "Lover Man", "Merlin", "Beautiful Heart", and "Gone With The Wind". Next is a set of tracks that feature Gullin's baritone in a quartet with German pianist Jutta Hipp – one of the few other Europeans of the 50s who was issued in the US as much as Lars – making her a perfect match on the records in more ways than one. Titles include "Always", "Man Lover", "Yesterdays", and "All The Things You Are". CD then features two more tracks with the quintet of tenor player Rolf Billberg – "Too Marvelous For Words" and "BBC Blues" – and two more by a Gullin Sexet with Billberg on tenor and Rickard Broden on trombone – "Late Summer" and "For FJ Fans Only". Over 75 minutes of music! CD

PoguesRed Roses For Me (2CD edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Stiff/Rhino, 1984. New Copy 2CDs ... $22.99 24.98
The incredible debut of The Pogues – and a set that somehow became a runaway hit and the start of a fantastic legacy – even during the post-punk years at a time when everyone had thought that interest in older folk styles was dead! And yet, although The Pogues work in the world of Irish traditional music, they're hardly another acoustic band – as Shane McGowan came to this territory through work in a punk band, and was able to reintroduce an edge to the work that had really disappeared during the folk revival boom of the 60s – reworking older acoustic instrumentation with a new sense of frenzy and urgency, all topped by his amazingly raw vocal style – which really gets at the heart of the lyrics! You might know some of these tunes from older records by The Clancy Brothers and other folk acts, but the sound here is completely different – and further transformed by an amazing sense of sound in the production – all those new sonic pathways that were learned during the punk years, helping here to further open up unique territory for the record. Titles include "Dark Streets Of London", "Streams Of Whiskey", "Transmetropolitan", "Waxie's Dargle", "The Auld Triangle", "Dingle Regatta", and "Poor Paddy". 2CD edition features six more bonus tracks that were all b-sides of singles – including "The Leaving Of Liverpool", "Wiskey You're The Devil", "Repeal Of The Licensing Laws", "Muirshin Durkin", and "The Wild Rover" – plus 12 more tracks from John Peel BBC Sessions in 1984. ✨✧ Kenny Wheeler LegacySome Days Are Better – The Lost Scores ... CD
Greenleaf, 2024. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
Work by a contemporary group, but one that exposes a lost moment in the long career of modern jazz genius Kenny Wheeler – a point when the composer/trumpeter was writing music for film and TV scores – mostly just for broadcast on the BBC, and not recorded on any of Kenny's own albums of the time! The vibe of these tracks takes off beautifully from his groundbreaking Windmill Tilter project with John Dankworth – large, beautiful arrangements that still feature key solo passages throughout – often with a fair bit of brass solos, handled in the way that Wheeler might have – with solos Brian Lynch, James Copus, Nick Smart, and Etienne Charles on flugelhorn – as well as Ingrid Jensen and John Daversa on trumpets – plus Chris Potter on tenor, Evan Parker on soprano and tenor, and Shelly Berg on piano. There's some great Fender Rhodes on many of the titles, and the great Norma Winstone contributes her amazing voice to two tracks – "Sweet Yakity Waltz" and "Some Days Are Better" – and other titles include "Some Doors Are Better Open", "Everybody Knows It", "DGS","Song For Someone", and "Who's Standing In My Corner". Harvest/Esoteric (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 10CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of work from Kevin Ayers – all four of his legendary Harvest albums, plus his Island album – all packaged in a massive set with lots of bonus tracks too! The songs here are amazing – easily on a par with the creative height of the early Pink Floyd – a lot lighter and more whimsical than Ayers original fame with Soft Machine – sometimes extremely playful, and often quite catchy – almost a Donovan-esque blend of folksy roots and jazz inflections – but tuned a bit more towards trippier ends, thanks to instrumentation that includes celeste, electronics, flute, oboe, kazoo, cello, organ, and a wide range of different guitars! Some numbers are a bit more experimental, but the tunefulness of the work is what really wins us – a way of being tripped-out, yet plenty catchy too – a blend that nobody else could do as well as Kevin. CD1 features the album Joy Of A Toy – with bonus tracks that include "Religious Experience", "Soon Soon Soon", and BBC tracks "Clarence In Wonderland", "You Say You Like My Hat", and "Why Are We Sleeping" – the last with Soft Machine. CD2 features a live performance in Hyde Park in 1970, plus a bonus track. ✨✧ Boots For DancingUndisco Kidds – Unreleased Early 80s Punk Funk Masterpiece ... CD
Athens Of The North (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
These guys might be undisco kids, but they're still pretty darn funky – in that best sort of jerky, quirky style that was percolating strongly in the Brit scene of the post-punk years! We'd file Boots For Dancing somewhere in a space next to A Certain Ratio or James White & The Blacks, and maybe Gang Of Four – as the group could clearly play punk, but are driven by much more soulful sounds at the bottom – especially the bassist, who's got this way of setting up the tunes that the guitar can only follow with a sharply-riffing sound! The execution is still very post-punk – there's some darkness in the vocals, and an overall edge to the guitar – but there's no denying the funky element in the music, and at some level these guys do a better job of most of their contemporaries in hitting the right sort of groove, but without ever sounding commercial or mainstream in the process. The little-known story of the group is told in wonderful detail in the notes – to support an album's worth of excellent recordings from the BBC Studios, plus some unreleased work too. Titles include "Salt In The Ocean", "South Pacific", "Just The Ticket", "Style In Full Swing", "Hesitate", "Get Up", "Shadows On Stone", "Money Is Thin On The Ground", "Bend An Elbow Lend An Ear", and "Stand". Beautiful early work from Jethro Tull – a formative set that really has the group deepening both their themes and their music! There's still a bit of blues rock at the core – but also some richer, more lyrical modes too – and Ian Anderson does a perfect job of bridging both worlds with his sublime work on flute – an instrument that must have seemed like an odd lead for a rock group at the time, but which is no surprise in the same generation that artists like Herbie Mann and Roland Kirk were making their own hip records – not to mention the great Harold McNair, who was a UK contemporary of Andreson. The whole thing's great – a record that's ripe for rediscovery, and which really gives back year after year – and titles include "A New Day Yesterday", "Back To The Family", "Fat Man", "Reasons For Waiting", "Nothing Is Easy", and the classic instrumental "Bouree". The heavy groove of Deep Purple continues – in a style that's a bit more song-focused and guitar-led than the group's debut – but still pretty darn great nonetheless! Some of the rumbling bass of before has been toned down a bit, but that leaves plenty of space for more jamming guitar work from Ritchie Blackmore – as well as more soaring Hammond lines, and vocals that almost hint at soulful influences from time to time. Strawberry (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 3CDs ... Out Of Stock
A great look at the work of Don Fardon – a blue eyed soul singer from the UK, one who recorded under a variety of settings in the 60s, and who breaks out here with some very hip work once the 70s come in! The early tunes are almost a male counterpart to the work of Julie Driscoll from the same time – a British rock take on American soul – still done in a rock-based mode, but with lots of influences from some of the American indies. Don's vocals are really great, and the backings on the set all have a solid soulful feel – and some feature backing vocals by singers that include Doris Troy, Madeline Bell, and Katie Kissoon, with whom Don recorded as a duo act in later years. Around the start of the 70s, Fardon had a big hit with a version of "Indian Reservation" – a moment that marked him using his soulful styles towards some more roots-oriented material as well – slightly heavier tunes that even echo some of the changes taking place on the American scene. There's a definite influence from swamp rock at points – a great fit for Fardon's vocals – but there's a lot more going here too – in a huge 3CD package that features 53 studio tracks, plus 18 more live ones, some from BBC recordings, some from the On Tour In Scandinavia album. Tracks include "Mr Stationmaster", "Ruby's Picture On My Wall", "Baby Let Me Take You Home", "Sally Goes Round The Moon", "Captain Man", "Treat Her Right", "Indian Reservation", "San Diego", "Girl", "Superwoman", "Chippewa Town", "Follow Your Drum", "Don't Do That", and "King's Highway". A record of pure genius and one of the greatest albums ever to come out of the British jazz rock scene – in an expanded 2CD package – with BBC and Peel Sessions, plus previously unreleased studio material! Matching Mole was a bit of a supergroup at the time – one that featured the piano, drums, and voice of Robert Wyatt next to the guitar of Phil Miller – topped off by additional piano, organ, and electric piano – in a wonderfully spacey, wonderfully mellow style that's never been matched again! If you dig the quieter, gentler side of Wyatt's work – or some of Miller's most intimate recordings on Virgin – you'll totally flip over the album – but even that's not giving it it's full due, because the sound is totally unique. Wyatt's vocals are wonderfully personal, and almost heartbreaking at times – handled with a fragility that few others of his generation had the courage to match! Titles include "Part Of The Dance", "Signed Curtain", "O Caroline", "Instant Kitten", "Beer As In Braindeer", and "Dedicated To Hugh But You Weren't Listening". Bonus material includes "O Caroline (Single Version)", "Signed Curtain (Single Edit)", the previously unreleased "Part Of The Dance Jam" (21+ minutes!) , plus "Horse", and "Memories Membrane", "Immediate Kitten" and "Marchides/Instant Pussy/Smoke Signal" from early '72 BBC sessions for John Peel and more! A never-issued performance from the great Louis Armstrong – recorded late in life, and a tremendous testament to the way in which Armstrong had become so much more than just a standard jazzman in his final years! The set was recorded by the BBC, where Louis and the group performed in a broadcast by the British network – and the music is handled with this really subtle balance between Armstrong's 60s star power, and his never-ending commitment to jazz expression – a quality that's really enhanced here by some superb work from trombonist Tyree Glenn, whose presence is fantastic – in a lineup that also includes Marty Napoleon on piano, Joe Muranyi on clarinet, Buddy Catlett on bass, and Danny Barcelona on drums. Tunes include many of the strongest in the Armstrong songbook of the 60s – versions of "The Bare Necessities", "Mack The Knife", "Hello Dolly", "Mame", "What A Wonderful World", "A Kiss To Build A Dream On", "Blueberry Hill", and "Rockin Chair". A very cool package, and one that might be sub-titled "The Road To Ziggy Stardust" – as the whole thing provides this progression of work that eventually led up to one of the best-known albums from David Bowie! As has been documented elsewhere, Bowie's partnership with guitarist Mick Ronson really rose to new heights with The Rise & Fall Of Ziggy Stardust – and the album itself was the product of work done under the mysterious Arnold Corns name, and over a series of demo recordings, BBC performances, and other material that predated the sessions for the famous album. Here, material is collected from all of those sources and presented almost as a lost early 70s Bowie album with the Spiders From Mars – with tracks that include "Hang On To Yourself (early Ziggy session take)", "Star (take 5 alternate)", "Round & Round (alt mix)", "The Supermen (Ziggy session version)", "Looking For A Friend (Ziggy session version)", "I Can't Explain (Trident studio)", "Starman (Top Of The Pops)", "John I'm Only Dancing (alt Trident Studios)", "Sweet Head (Ziggy sessions outtake)", "Holy Holy (Ziggy sessions alt)", "Shadow Man (Ziggy session version)", "It's Gonna Rain Again (Ziggy sessions outtake)", and "Velvet Goldmine (Ziggy sessions outtake)". A great post-Family project from singer Roger Chapman and guitarist Charlie Whitney – working here in a way that really seems to hone in on the individual charms that both musicians have to offer! Chapman's vocals are every bit as distinct as before, but nicely tuned towards different styles – sometimes leaner modes that really come off well, and open up a more personal quality that's underscored by Whitney's more careful work on guitar. The album's definitely got some bolder moments, but the pair also don't seem as if they feel the need to cut some all-out rock session either – and the record's got some great touches that include light string arrangements, bass from John Wetton and Rick Grech, and reed work from the great Mel Collins, of King Crimson fame. Warner/Rhino, Early 70s. Used 5CD ... Out Of Stock
Stunning sounds from one of the greatest groups of all time – the mighty Faces, served up here in a killer package that includes their four full albums, plus never-issued bonus tracks – and a whole bonus CD of singles and b-sides! The group is the stuff of legend – a boozy, balls-out quintet that features a young Rod Stewart on vocals – sounding rawer than on most of his own great records – plus Ronnie Wood on guitar and Ronnie Laine on bass – as well as other remaining members of the Small Faces – a killer lineup that was tight, right, and ready to go from their very first note – and served up this brilliant flurry of music in their all-too-short time together! The package features all the records in small LP-styled sleeves – The First Step, Long Player, Nod Is As Good As A Wink, and Ooh La La – all with never-issued bonus tracks that include "Behind The Sun (outtake)", "Mona The Blues (outtake)", "Shake Shudder Shiver (BBC)", "Flying (take 3", "Miss Judy's Farm (BBC)", "Sham Mozzal (inst outtake)", "Whole Lotta Woman (outtake)", "Too Much Woman (live)", "Silicone Grown (rehearsal)", "Glad & Sorry (rehearsal)", "Jealous Guy (live)", "Borstal Boys (rehearsal)", "Stay With Me (BBC)", and "Cindy Incidentally (BBC)" – quite a lot of unissued tracks, really, given the amount of other rare material that was on their Five Guys box set! Then, the final CD features 9 more singles and b-sides – including "Pool Hall Richard", "Rear Wheel Skid", "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Oh Lord I'm Browned Off", "I Wish It Would Rain (with a trumpet)", "You Can Make Me Dance Sing Or Anything (UK single version)", "As Long As You Tell Him", "Skewiff", and "Dishevelment Blues". ✨✧ FallLive At The Witch Trials (expanded edition) ... CD
Castle (UK), Late 70s. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
This album is early Fall at their best – raw, edgey, and also surprisingly witty at times too – an amazing showcase for the young talents of Mark E Smith, and a key bridge between punk energy and the more creative styles of the post-punk generation. The sounds are incredible – especially considering the relatively standard instrumentation – and the record's really one that has The Fall working with the same sonic force as The Swell Maps – using noise as much as their guitars, and creating an amazing soundscape for the always-biting lyrics! Titles include "Mother Sister", "No Xmas For John Quays", "Rebellious Jukebox", "Frightened", "Live At The Witch Trials", "Music Scene", and "Futures & Pasts". Then, the set moves on to include a whopping 30 bonus tracks – the first of which are great early singles like "Bingo Master's Break Out", "Psycho Mafia", "Stepping Out", "Various Times", "Repetition", "New Thing", and "Last Orders". Then, there's BBC sessions that include "Like To Blow", "Mess Of My", "Futures & Pasts", "Mother Sister", and "Industrial Estate" – and more live material from Liverpool in 1978! CD

✨✧ FallTotale's Turns (Expanded Deluxe Edition) ... CD
Castle (UK), 1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
An early Fall live album and a fiery set that captures the coy, cynical genius of Mark E Smith and prime era of the band it's shambling best! At this early point, the Fall's studio recordings were pretty much live, too, but the presence of an audience makes all the difference – a tension and controlled sense of frenzy that's pretty amazing. 11 tracks including "Firey Jack", "Rowche Rumble", "In My Area", "Choc-Stock", "That Man", "New Puritan", "No Xmas For John Quays" and more. Bonus tracks from BBC/John Peel session in 1980. CD

✨✧ Jethro TullStand Up (collector's edition – with bonus tracks) (2CD & DVD) ... CD
Chrysalis, 1969. Used 2CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
2010 Collector's Edition includes the 2001 album remaster, studio and BBC bonus tracks, and a live concert recorded at Carnegie Hall presented in CD and DVD audio – plus a 45 minute video interview with Ian Anderson! Wickedly clever British pop – plucked from our favorite period of this legendary British band! The record features the group hitting their songwriting stride – moving past the simple topics of earlier songs, into a flurry of snapshots of British life in the postwar years. Each song is a brilliant three minute ode to a certain aspect of life in England – served up with razor-sharp wit, and a creatively catchy approach to songwriting that few of the group's contemporaries could ever hope to match! The album features some of the best-known Kinks tunes from this time, plus overlooked gems – and titles include "Waterloo Sunset", "David Watts", "Death Of A Clown", "Two Sisters", "Situation Vacant", "Afternoon Tea", and "No Return". ✨✧ Procol HarumProcol Harum (2CD edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Deram/Esoteric (UK), 1967. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
The amazing first album from Procol Harum – a group with a sound that's still unlike anyone else we can think of – even though they were a key part of the London scene of the 60s! The group are steeped in all of the blues, soul, and jazz elements that influenced so many other British acts of the period – but they have this way of presenting the music that brings a whole new sort of drama to the music – this flair that never overwhelms, and instead embellishes the music in this really special way – so that the tunes have this brilliance that's kept them fresh for many decades to follow! Lead singer Gary Brooker is a key part of the record's magic – a very distinctive singer – and a young Robin Trower contributes plenty on guitar, as does Matthew Fisher on Hammond. But there's also some arrangements that really set the whole thing in an unusual direction – and which make the record way more than just another bluesy rock set from the time. Hard to argue with the baroque brilliance of "She Wandered Through The Garden Fence", "A Christmas Camel", "Salad Days", "Repent Walpurgis", and "Conquistador". This wonderful 2CD set features 27 additional bonus tracks – including singles "A Whiter Shade Of Pale", "Alpha", "Salad Days", "Understandably Blue", "Homburg", "Lime Street Blues", and "Good Captain Clack" – plus bonus alternate mixes, and two different BBC sessions from 1967! Also includes a bonus poster! CD

✨✧ Procol HarumShine On Brightly (3CD edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Deram/Esoteric (UK), 1968. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The stunning second album from Procol Harum – a record that takes everything that's wonderful about their debut, and pushes it even farther – to a very unique space that's completely the group's own! The songcraft here is magical – with great work from the team of vocalist Gary Brooker and Keith Reid – and the production continues the group's unusual blend of bluesy elements with these dramatic, ambitious arrangements – never pop orchestrations, but just these ways of putting together a tune that make familiar fuzz guitar, piano, and organ explode in really new sort of ways. The whole thing's wonderful – hardly any hits, but all wonderful songs throughout – and titles include "Quite Rightly So", "Shine On Brightly", "Skip Softly", "Magdalene", "Glimpses Of Nirvana", "Grand Finale", and "In The Autumn Of My Madness". Incredible 3CD package features bonus postcards, poster, and full mixes of the album in stereo and mono (the latter never on CD) – plus 20 more bonus tracks that include "Monsieur Armand", "Seem To Have The Blues", "Long Gone Geek", "In Held Twas In I", "In The Wee Small Hours Of Sixpence", and "Ramblin On" – plus rare alternate versions and BBC material too. ✨✧ Procol HarumStill There'll Be More – An Anthology 1967 to 2017 (5CD & 3DVD set) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Late 60s/1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s/2010s. Used 5CD & 3DVD ... Out Of Stock
A huge career-spanning retrospective of the work of Procol Harum – presented in a set that features material from every single album by the group, including a few of their more obscure later efforts! While most folks might know an early hit or two by Procol Harum, those who are truly in the know understand that these guys never made a bad step – that over the course of many records, they kept on sounding great – and continued to work in that unique melange of styles that can only be called Harum-like, or maybe Procol-ish! There's often an especially compelling sense of rhythm and flow that's balanced alongside Gary Brooker's unique vocals – every bit as powerful later as on "Whiter Shade Of Pale". This 5CD set is amazing – 69 tracks from every single album by the group, plus two live concert – Hollywood Bowl in 1973 and Bournemouth Winter Gardens in 1976 – plus 3DVDs that include 210 minutes of mostly unreleased footage of BBC and German TV appearances from 1967 to 1977. Also features the entire Musikladen recording from 1973 – plus a lavish 68 page illustrated book, a replica poster, and a great box to hold the whole thing. Titles include "Pandora's Box", "The Unquiet Zone", "As Strong As Samson", "For Liquorice John", "Fires Which Burnt Brightly", "Can't Say That", "Grand Hotel", "Conquistador (live)", "The Devil Came From Kansas", "A Salty Dog", "Something Magic", "Strangers In Space", "Homburg", "Cerdes", "Shine On Brightly", "Perpetual Motion", "This World Is Rich", and "Broken Barricades". ✨✧ SNAFUYou Know It Ain't Easy – The SNAFU Anthology (Snafu/Situation Normal/All Funked Up/bonus tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Mid 1970s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
Super-sharp work from Snafu – a group whose sound is a lot sharper than their name might make you expect! Snafu is something of a supergroup – as they feature guitar from Micky Moody, later of Whitesnake fame – and vocals from Bobby Harrison, previously of freedom – in a lineup that features members from other big UK groups too! Their sound is a mixture of hard rock elements and bluesy currents – but fused together with more of that careful compression that marks some of the bigger shifts that were taking place in the UK scene of the time. There's some surprising roots elements in the music at points, which may well be the strongest side of the group's sound – and throughout their short run, they kept things mighty tight and on point! Box set features a 48 tracks in all – the full albums Snafu, Situation Normal, and All Funked Up – plus a full set of BBC live performances on CD4, and bonus tracks that include "Dixie Queen", "Are You Sure", and "Sad Sunday" – and more BBC session tracks too – all boxed up with plenty of notes too!
