✨✧ BB & Q BandGenie (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Elektra/PTG (Netherlands), 1985. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The last true classic from the masters of the 80s groove genre – a post-Capitol effort for Elektra, but one that's still awash in great keyboards and snapping electro beats! Some of the jazzier sound from the past is gone here, but in its place is a leaner, cleaner sound that's still a fair bit more compelling than most work by the group's contemporaries! Nearly all tracks snap along with rhythms that are nicely placed between the street and the dancefloor – never gimmicky and never too cloying, and tightly focused enough to make the most of the hooks in the vocals. Lots of DX7 on the album, and more than a few numbers have a great sort of breakdance vibe. Tracks include "Riccochet" and "Dreamer" – both remixed by Shep Pettibone –"On The Shelf", "Genie", "Main Attraction", and "Don't Force It". CD features 6 bonus tracks – including "Dreamer (no 1 rmx)", "Main Attraction (finest rmx)", "Dreamer (Shep's dream version)", "Riccochet (Ben Liebrand mix)", and "Dreamer (Shep Pettibone long voc version)". ✨✧ Budos BandV ... LP
Daptone, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
It's hard to believe that the Budos Band have been around long enough to give us five full albums – but along the way, they've also picked up plenty of power to add to their sound! This time around, the guitars seem even sharper than ever – full and fuzzy, and maybe even touched with some elements that might have made some of the bigger 70s groups weep – almost as if the BB are trying to create a whole new generation of prog funk in the process! All the other elements are still in place – lots of heavy drums, rumbling bass, and some mighty nice horns – but when mixed with the strength of the guitars, even the horns feel as if they're hitting some new currents – like when artists like Dick Heckstall Smith or Alan Skidmore might jam along with a funky guitar riff from way back. Titles include "The Enchanter", "Spider Web (part 1)", "Old Engine Oil", "Veil Of Shadows", "Arcane Rambler", "Valley Of The Damned", and "Rumble From The Void". LP, Vinyl record album

Count BasieBasie One More Time ... LP
Roulette, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $16.99
The genius of Basie meets the genius of Quincy Jones – a 60s pairing that's every bit as great as the 50s pairing of Basie and Neal Hefti! Jones and Basie worked together in a number of settings during the 60s – including a very successful album for Frank Sinatra on Reprise – but here, the pair are really going full-on and hard-swinging, in a fresh style that's got all the hipness of Quincy's budding talent in the 60s, played with the deeply soulful manner of the still-great Basie band of the time. Titles include "Rat Race", "For Lena & Lennie", "The Big Walk", "Meet BB", "Jessica's Day", "Muttnik", and "Quince". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousGI Disco – The History Of The Cold War's Hottest 80's Club Music In West Germany ... CD
BBE (UK), 1980s. New Copy ... $8.99 19.99
Dancefloor soul, club funk and thumping grooves from the post disco 80s – selected by Karsten Grossmann, aka Kalle Kuts, and Daniel W Best as GI Disco – benchmark US grooves that made waves in West Germany in the cold war 80s! The post disco, boogie, and cosmic groovers of stateside soul scenes was brought in to the clubs for GIs stationed in West Berlin and other parts of Western Germany, as well as being played on the Armed Forces Network radio, enough to mightily influence the club scenes of West Berlin, Munich and other cities. This great compilation for BBE provides a solid snapshot of time and place, but more than that, it's great little set of club friendly jams from the electronic embellished 80s soul scene – with tracks by Timex Social Club, Barbara Mason, Fonda Rae, BB & Q Band and more. 12 tracks on the CD version: "Rumours" by Timex Social Club, "IOU" by Freez, "Another Man" by Barbara Mason, "Spend The Night" by The Cool Notes, "Touch Me" by Wish feat Fonda Rae, "Money's Too Tight To Mention" by Valentine Brothers, "100%" by Caprice and "Riccochet" by BB & Q Band, "Put Our Heads Together" by The O' Jays, "Falling In Love" by Surface and more. PTG (France), 1984. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great lost bit of 80s groove – the one and only album from Network, a bouncing funky soul outfit that followed strongly in the spirit of BB&Q Band, Mtume, and other 80s groove heroes! The sound here is upbeat and positive – lots of bass and keys in the instrumentation, and joyous vocals that soar over the top of the beat from two male lead singers. The production quality is great – on a par with any of the bigger label releases of the time – and titles include "Jennie", "Cover Girl", "I Need You", "Hard To Give It Up", and "Why You Wanna Treat Me Like That". Rhino, 1986. Used ... $9.99
Great lost work from Miles Davis – early material recorded for Warner Brothers in the mid 80s, and never released at the time – now finally uncovered from the vaults, and presented with a few slight contemporary touches! The core music is prime electric Miles funk all the way through – a great first step into the territory that he'd explore at Warner in his final years, but also with some traces of the Columbia records from the few years before – strong trumpet solos amidst bold rhythms – given new life here from instrumentalists Randy Hall and Attala Zane Giles. The music has been updated from the original tapes – with a richer sound, and a vibe that sounds less dated – and vocals have been added in a few spots, including great work from Ledisi and Lalah Hathaway. Titles include "Rubberband Of Life", "Echoes In Time/The Wrinkle", "See I See", "I Love What We Make Together", "So Emotional", "Paradise", "Maze", and "Give It Up". CD

✨✧ Mike Gibbs with John ScofieldMike Gibbs Band At Symphony Hall – Birmingham 1991 ... CD
Dusk Fire (UK), 1991. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A really unusual meeting of the minds – as legendary guitarist John Scofield works here with the famous British big band of Mike Gibbs – an ensemble that had been making waves for decades by the time of this recording! Gibbs was always one of the most colorful of the modern British talents at the end of the 60s – a trombonist, composer, and arranger who was always strongly aware of tone – especially the unusual moments that could arise when putting key talents together in his always-modern ensemble! The lineup here lives up to that legacy – as it also features Kenny Wheeler on trumpet, Tony Coe on tenor, John Taylor on piano, Chris Pyne on trombone, and Steve Swallow on bass – all players whose early work helped transform the UK scene, and who still sound great at the start of the 90s. The album's a double-length set – and titles include "Meant To Be", "Lost In Space", "Pretty Out", "Blueprint", "Science & Religion", "Fat Lip", "World Without", "Out Of The Question", and "Don't Overdo It". David BowieWorld Of David Bowie (blue vinyl pressing) (2019 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Decca (UK), Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
Fantastic early work from David Bowie – material that we've always treasured as much as Ziggy Stardust! This set's pre-Hunky Dory, pre-Space Oddity – and it's an amazing little record that's almost completely devoid of guitars – instead using weird woodwinds (lots of oboe!), soaring strings, and offbeat orchestrations to carry off the tunes – all of which are as weird, mad, and wonderful as anything Bowie wrote in later years! The subject matter of the songs is almost a dark reflection of the picture postcard England that you'd find in work by The Kinks – the local pederast, weird guy who lives with his mum, old military geezer who can't get out of the past, cross-dressing soldiers, a gravedigger about to meet his death, and hip Londoners gallivanting all over town – all delivered with a sharpness that's stunning. We honestly think the record is flawless – incredibly complicated instrumentally, but incredibly groovy too – with all the edge you'll always love in Bowie, but in a fresh young flavor too. Years back, as young Bowie-heads, we always passed this one by – assuming it was unformed early roughness – but it's not, and is an incredible album that would have been more than enough for any other artist to build a career on. Includes "Uncle Arthur", "Sell Me A Coat", "Rubber Band", "Love You Till Tuesday", "There Is A Happy Land", "When I Live My Dream", "The London Boys", "Karma Man", and "She's Got Medals". VariousNew Orleans Funk – The Original Sound Of Funk Vol 2 – Second Line Strut ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. Used ... $13.99
An incredible follow up to the first New Orleans Funk compilation on Soul Jazz – even harder-hitting than the first, and filled with funky rare gems! This set took nearly a decade to follow the first, but it's been well worth the wait – and the crew at Soul Jazz have clearly used all that time to dig way past the obvious on the New Orleans scene, and come up with a really incredible batch of all-funky cuts all the way through! Even if you've got a dozen other New Orleans funk collections in your collection, you'll find plenty here to win you over – as the package goes out of its way to pull cuts from rare singles and under-reissued material – then wraps the whole thing up with the usual extra-thorough Soul Jazz approach to liner notes and details. And while some of the names are familiar here, they're nicely interspersed with lesser-known folks who keep things fresh – making for a winning lineup that really sets a new standard for this sort of set. Titles include "The Twitch" by Danny White, "Street Parade" by Earl King, "Four Corners" by Lee Dorsey, "Hot Tamales" by The Prime Mates, "Tequila" by Allen Toussaint, "Right Place Wrong Time" by Ray J, "Gossip" by Cyril Neville, "Hold On Help Is On The Way" by G Davis & R Tyler, "Funky Belly" by Warren Lee, "I'm Mr Big Stuff" by Jimmy Hicks, "The Rubber Band" by Eddie Bo, "12 Red Roses" by Betty Harris, "What Do You See In Her" by Inell Young, "You Keep Me Hanging On" by Bonnie & Sheila, "Yeah You're Right You Know You're Right" by The Gaturs, "The Tap" by Porgy Jones, and "Bo Diddley" by Art Neville. Bobby BryantBig Band Blues ... LP
Vee Jay, 1959. Near Mint- ... $14.99
One of the earliest albums ever recorded by trumpeter Bobby Bryant – but a set that was also only issued after his bigger albums of the 60s! The set was cut for Vee Jay in 1959, when Bobby was living in Chicago – but wasn't issued at the time – and it's a fantastic document of the player's great early sensibilities, almost a precursor to some of the hipper big band work that would come out of the west coast scene in the 60s. Many titles are familiar, but they're redone with a tremendous sense of rhythm and groove – executed by Bobby and the band with some really great solos, and held down by a tight rhythm section that features John Young on piano. Other players include Louis Satterfield and John Avant on trombones, and James Spaulding and Willie Randall on saxes – and titles include "Sleepy", "Love For Sale", "Blues Excerpt", "Indiana", "Falling In Love", and "Harlem Rain". The legendary duo of Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia helped transform the sound of hip hop in the 90s – but here, they come across in a completely different mode – stepping forth as musical artists of their own, heading up a very cool combo known as the M19s Band! The approach is classic jazzy soul – with remakes of vintage grooves that were sampled heavily back in the day – such as tunes by Idris Muhammad, Stevie Wonder, and Chaka Khan – but served up with razor-sharp instrumentation that effortlessly blends together jazz, soul, and a bit of Latin – with occasional vocal contributions from Rich Medina, Edson Sean, Maimouna Youssef, and Bobbito himself. Robbie Robertson is solely credited for the compositions, but make no mistake, this record is by The Band – not just notes committed to a page and played – it's a fluid, intuitive and timeless album that we love nearly as much as anything they'd ever done – possibly as much as Big Pink or self-titled, even more on some days. Essential! Titles include "Rags & Bones", "Acadian Driftwood", "Hobo Jungle", "Ophelia", "Ring Your Bell", Jupiter Hollow" and "It Makes No Difference". CD

Black SabbathTechnical Ecstasy ... CD
Warner, 1976. Used ... $4.99
The cover here looks a bit slicker than some of the other Black Sabbath albums of the 70s – but the sound is anything but, and still flies the flag of all the greatness the group had to offer! The set was recorded at the famous Criteria Studios in Miami – home to some great soul sessions in the early part of the decade – and Tommy Iommi gives the band a sharp edge in the studio, bringing the guitars up and Ozzy's vocals into a nice sort of focus – reminding the world that Sabbath can still kick the ass of newcomers like AC/DC when needed. And like late 70s material by Led Zeppelin, which some purists of the time tend to dismiss – from the backward perspective of 40 years, the album sounds pretty darn great to our ears! Titles include "She's Gone", "Dirty Women", "It's Alright", "Gypsy", "Back Street Kids", "You Won't Change Me", and "All Moving Parts". CD

David Clayton ThomasDavid Clayton Thomas/Tequila Sunrise/David Clayton Thomas (with bonus track) ... CD
BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
A trio of solo albums from David Clayton Thomas – packaged here with a bonus track too! First up is the self-titled Columbia set David Clayton Thomas – great early solo work the singer who'd rose to fame as part of Blood Sweat & Tears – stepping out here with a sound that's maybe even more soul-based than his music with that famous group! The set features production from Bobby Colomby, of BS&T – and the groove is somewhat similar, but with less horns, and a lot more riffing guitar, keyboards, and other elements used to bring out some of the funkier currents in David's vocals! A few tracks were recorded in Memphis, with guitar from Steve Cropper – and the record even features some arrangements from Claus Ogerman and Jimmy Giuffre. The set includes a remake of of "Magnificent Sanctuary Band" – with a break at the start that's as funky as the original – and other titles include "We're All Meat From The Same Bone", "Sing A Song", "Don't Let It Bring You Down", "Once Burned", "Stealin In The Name Of The Lord", and a surprisingly great take on the Gram Parsons tune "She". Next is Tequila Sunrise – a fantastic solo album from David Clayton Thomas – and a set that still retains the amazing vocals he brought to Blood Sweat & Tears, but which has a completely different focus overall! Clayton-Thomas wrote almost all the songs on the set – and he works here with a tight core group that features William Smitty Smith on keyboards and arrangements, and plenty of guitar from Danny Kortchmar – both musicians who give the whole record a very strong, tight vibe that makes the whole thing feel like it comes from some hip early 70s group. Titles include "Friday The 13th Child", "My Song", "Last Time That She Cried", "The Face Of Man", "Nobody Calls Me Prophet", and "Fallin By Degrees". Next up is another self-titled album – David Clayton Thomas, from 1973 – with David himself handling arrangements, and doing a mighty nice job – getting plenty of sweet keyboards from William D Smith, and strong lead guitar from Domenic Troiano – both of whom echo the funky rock currents in the music. There's a bit of a Memphis rock vibe to the record at times – and titles include "Small Family", "Professor Longhair", "Harbor Lady", "Harmony Junction", and "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby". CD also features the bonus track "Some Hearts Get All The Breaks". CD

Post Funkadelic and Parliament work from George Clinton – an assortment of tracks from a variety of Columbia and Sony-related albums by artists who include Sweat Band, Mutiny, Junie, Bootsy Collins, Mico Wave, Philippe Wynne, and the P-Funk All-Stars! Most of the material here has an early 80s sort of feel – that second wave of P-Funk inspiration after so many other groups were grabbing the Clinton groove – and bass is especially upfront in the mix on most of these numbers, topped with vocals that are definitely in the style first encouraged by George back in the day. Titles include "Funky Kind" and "If Anybody Gets Funked Up" by George Clinton & The P-Funk All Stars, "Leakin" and "Party On Plastic" by Bootsy Collins, "Lump" and "Funk N Bop" by Mutiny, "Rappin About Rappin" and "Love Has Taken Me Over" by Junie Morrison, "Instant Replay" by Mico Wave, "Freak To Freak" by Sweat Band, "Breakout" and "Never Gonna Tell It" by Philippe Wynne, and "One Of Those Summers" and "Pumpin It Up" by P-Funk All Stars. Freddie Gibbs & MadlibBandana ... LP
RCA, 2019. New Copy ... $22.99
Maybe the best Madlib-produced LP since the highest peaks of the prime Stones Throw era, and Freddie Gibbs is on fire throughout! Each one does what he does best here and ups the ante. 'Lib is focused on crackling soul beats and hazy funk – masterfully utilizing vintage and contemporary sample sources from Donny Hathaway and Syl Johnson to Kaidi Tatham and The Heliocentrics – delivering the right kind of gritty headnodding vibe without compromising on his distinctive style. Freddie Gibbs is uncompromisingly raw and fiercely focused, varying the speed of his flow when the mood strikes, so what sounds like it might be an uncommonly inspired freestyle one second rolls into the most dexterous lyricism for the next couple minutes. Seriously strong stuff, with just a few guest appearances by Pusha T, Killer Mike, Anderson.Paak, Yasiin Bey & Black Thought. Gap BandGap Band (1979)/Gap Band II/Gap Band III ... CD
Mercury/BGO (UK), 1979/1980. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
Massive music in a wonderful package – three funky classics from The Gap Band! First up is the group's self-titled album from 1979 – the start of the legendary second chapter for the Gap Band – the point when the group had reemerged as the tight funky trio of the Wilson Brothers, with a groove that would really set them up nicely for the 80s! This first album in the new format has a wonderfully tight feel – still plenty of sharp edges that echo their earlier groove, but a leaner quality too – one that's got the bass and drums snapping together wonderfully, really setting the tone for the heaviest grooves. There's also a few mellower cuts too – which really sound great, and give the record the same sort of balance you might hear on work by Heaven & Earth at the time. War's Lonnie Simmons produced – and held the cash bag all the way to the bank! Titles include "I'm In Love", "Got To Get Away", "Messin With My Mind", "Shake", "Baby Baba Boogie", "Open Your Mind Wide", and "I Can Sing". Gap Band II features mean, lean grooves from The Gap Band – a legendary batch of mainstream funk from the end of the 70s – and a record that really has the trio working at the top of their game! There's a wonderful balance here between funky numbers and mellow ones – the latter of which really help pace the record nicely, giving it a depth that takes the group way beyond the cliches of some of their contemporaries, and firmly establishing the Gap Band as one to watch for the 80s! Titles include the massive "I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up & Dance" – with its classic "Oops Upside Your Head" refrain – plus "Who Do You Call", "No Hiding Place", "Steppin Out", "You Are My High", and "Party Lights". Gap Band III is sagreat one from the Gap Band – funky gems and sinister groovers – the best of both worlds for the group! Tunes like "Burn Rubber On Me (When You Want To Hurt Me)" and "Humpin" packed 80s dance floors for good reason, and put the band in steady rotation, while numbers like "Yearning For Your Love" showed the band could drop the tempo, stretch out a bit, and deliver the mighty mellow. This one's certainly at the top of the heap of 80s groovers, as far as we're concerned – a record that really took the Gap Band over the top! Other tracks include "Nothin' Comes To The Sleepers", "Are You Living", "The Way", "Gash Gash Gash" and more. CD

Capitol, 1968. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 21.99
A sublime album from the great Bobbie Gentry – and maybe her strongest full-length set recorded during the classic Capitol years! The title's "sweete" is a hillbilly play on the word "suite" – and the album definitely works as an extended suite of tracks – almost a concept album, and one that mixes lots of Bobbie's own tunes with a few well-chosen covers – all set to larger arrangements that feature strings from Jimmie Haskell and horns directed by Shorty Rogers – all while Gentry leads the combo at the core! Later Capitol albums had Gentry doing a lot of covers, and maybe losing her identity a bit – but this set is more of an expansion on the mode she brought to the "Billie Joe" single – with tracks that include "Reunion", "Mornin Glory", "Sermon", "Penduli Pendulum", "Jessye Lisabeth", "Courtyard", "Okolona River Bottom Band", and "Refractions". 2CD version features a brand new stereo mix from the original tapes, the original mono mix of the album, and bonus tracks that include demos of "Mornin Glory", "Sermon", "Jessye Lisabeth", "Louisiana Man", "Refractions", "The Way I Do", and "Feelin Good" – plus an instrumental of "Okolona River Bottom Band", and an alternate take of "Mississippi Delta". Lord Invader & His Calypso GroupCalypso Travels (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Folkways, 1960. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 22.98
The last album ever recorded by Trinidad calypso legend Lord Invader – and a set that really sums up all the genius he brought to his too-short career! At a time when the music was really entering the mainstream in commercial ways, Invader keeps things very spare, stark, and basic here – reminding us that at the core, calypso was not only a really revolutionary musical style in the Caribbean – but also a way for under-represented cultures to really get a chance to speak out! Lord Invader does plenty of that here – mixing social commentary with a fair bit of wit, all while the percussion is going crazy at the core – on titles that include "Cat O Nine Tails", "Crisis In Arkansas", "Fidel Castro", "My Experience In The Reeperbahn", "Me One Alone", "As Long As It Born In My House", and "Steel Band War". Lonnie MackComplete Elektra Recordings (Wham Of That Memphis Man/Glad I'm In The Band/Whatever's Right/Hills Of Indiana) ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 18.99
Great second-chapter work from Lonnie Mack – brought together here with his 1963 debut as well! That album is the first – The Wham Of That Memphis Man – a killer blend of southern soul and rockabilly grit from Lonnie Mack – his first album and a really incredible effort that fuses soul, country, and rock roots in a really brilliant way! Lonnie was later known as more of a country boy-electric bluesman, but the blues on this early LP feels like a blue-eyed Bobby Bland – but maybe with a lot more guitar in the lead! The horns burst, and the organ & bass really steep the overall vibe in the two Steps From The Blues style, but the fiery guitar and vocals keep more of a early rock vibe – twang next to soul, in a really unique mode. Tracks include "Wham!", "Down And Out", "Why", "Down In The Dumps", "Memphis", "I'll Keep You Happy", "Suzie Q", "Satisfied", and "Farther On Down The Road". Glad I'm In The Band is a slow-burning charmer from the great Lonnie Mack – a set that has him in a slightly different setting than his debut, but one that's equally soul-drenched overall! The group here features some especially great work from David Byrd – who plays these organ lines that almost set the whole thing in Muscle Shoals territory – as do the strong horn arrangements from Maxwell Davis, who sounds a lot more southern here than his Cali soul norm. Lonnie's also turned into an even better singer than before – blue-eyed deep soul at its best – on titles that include "Sweat & Tears", "Let Them Talk", "Why", "Old House", "Save Your Money", "Stay Away From My Baby", and "She Don't Come Here Any More". Whatever's Right is a comeback album of sorts for Lonnie Mack, recorded for Elektra with a really down-home sound that's almost verging on southern soul at points! In a way, the set's kind of a nod to the sorts of genres in rock that Mack's music first helped unlock in earlier years – done at a time when it was a bit more acceptable to cross boundaries and reference roots that weren't actually yours in your music! The execution here is surprisingly strong and without hoke – a few notches up from Leon Russell – and Mack's guitar is in fine fine form, supported by a good deal of organ in the backings. Titles include "Gotta Be An Answer", "Untouched By Human Love", "I Found A Love", "Baby What You Want Me To Do", "Mt Healthy Blues", "What Kind Of World Is This", and "Things Have Gone To Pieces". Hills Of Indiana is a real charmer – and the last Elektra album by Lonnie Mack! We don't normally think of Indiana in such poetic terms – but leave it to Lonnie Mack to find the hidden beauty in roughness – a quality that seems to emerge more and more in his music as the 70s moved on! This Elektra album from 1971 is a real overlooked gem – quite different than anything you might have expected from Mack at the start of his career, and a record that really shows him blossoming as much as a singer as he was a guitarist – heartfelt and personal, but still with all the grit that his reputation would entail – with strong currents of both southern soul and rock, but some nice roots elements too. The set was recorded in Nashville, Muscle Shoals, and LA – and titles include "Bicycle Annie", "Asphalt Outlaw Hero", "The Man In Me", "Rings", "She Even Woke Me Up To Say Goodbye", and "Lay It Down". Freddie McGregorBobby Bobylon (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Heartbeat, 1979. Used ... $14.99
A key moment in the career of the legendary Freddie McGregor – easily one of the best-known voices in reggae in the post-Marley years! The set captures Freddie at his youthful best – coming off of time doing vocal group work, but really shining strongly as a lead singer on his own – getting this nicely subtle Studio One backing that are heavy on the roots vibe, which makes a nicely deep rhythmic contrast to the sweetly crackling vocals of McGregor! The set came out at the start of the 80s, but it's got an instant classic vibe that resonates almost more strongly with some of the most soulful Jamaican recordings at the end of the 60s. Titles include "Bandulo", "We Need More Love", "What Difference Does It Make", "Go Away Pretty Girl", "Tomorrow Is Like Today", "Bobby Bobylon", "Wine Of Violence", "Gonna Take Over Now", "Rastaman Camp", and "I Am A Revolutionist". 2 rare Latin albums from the Prestige/Fantasy vaults – both of them great! The set compiles the records Wild & Warm and Arriba! Con Montego Joe – by congolero Montego Joe, a key figure in the underground New York scene of the 60s. Both albums have a good hard Latin jazz feel, with a little bit of Latin soul thrown in – in the same kind of mix of jazz and Latin that you'd find on the Pucho albums for Prestige at the same time. The bands on both sets include a number of great players, like Leonard Goines on trumpet, Al Gibbons on tenor, Eddie Gomez on bass – and the surprising addition of Milford Graves on percussion and Chick Corea on piano (although any fan of Chick's knows he got his start with Latin bands.) Lots of tasty Latin groovers, including "Fatman", "The Jinx", "Ewe", "Ouch", "Bata Blues", "Haitian Lady", and lots lots more! CD

Resilience, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Key proof that great songs never get old – and maybe even more, that the political messages of yesterday still have plenty of power today! Drummer Ulysses Owens mines the righteous territory of the 60s and 70s here – bringing together songs originally performed by Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln, and Joni Mitchell – all with a fresher, more contemporary approach that resonates surprisingly strongly – especially given the superb vocals on the album by Rene Marie, Theo Bleckmann, Alicia Olatuja, and Joanna Majoko! You'll no doubt know some of these songs – and most of the originals have been inspiring us for many years – but Owens finds a great way to open them up and make them sound even more vibrant, working with a group that also includes Allyn Johnson on Fender Rhodes and Hammond, David Rosenthal on guitars, and Reuben Rogers on bass. Titles include "Balm In Gilead", "Borderline", "Driva Man", "Baltimore", "Everything Must Change", "Freedom Day", "Be My Husband", "Mississippi Goddamn", and "Both Sides Now". CD

Sly & The Family StoneSmall Talk/High On You/Heard Ya Missed Me Well I'm Back ... CD
Epic/BGO (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
A trio of second-period Sly Stone albums – all brought together in a single CD set! On Small Talk, Sly's still doing pretty nice for himself in 1974 – with a sound that's perhaps a bit warmer than on the early records, but still nice and soulful – and peppered with a good dose of funk! The groove is really great on the set – bubbling with a more "deep down" feel than the skittish funk of the first few records, and breaking out on some great soul numbers that show Sly to be an even better singer than before – touchingly sensitive at times, in a really beautiful way! Titles include "Loose Booty", which has a wonderful popping bass/hollow drum sound, and a tasty break in the middle – plus the cuts "This Is Love", "Wishful Thinkin", "Time For Livin", "Can't Strain My Brain", and "Say You Will". High On You is a nice little mid 70s set from Sly – one recorded without the Family Stone, but still grooving wonderfully with lots of funky edges! Sly's expanded his sound nicely here – pushing past the shorter funk of earlier years to work in some complicated instrumentation that keeps things really sounding fresh. Great examples of this are the frenetic horn bits on "Crossword", which you'll recognize from its famous Tribe Called Quest sample – or the sweeping strings on the mellow groover "That's Lovin You". The whole thing's great – and other tracks include "I Get High on You", "So Good to Me", "Le Lo Li", "Green Eyed Monster Girl", and "Organize". On Heard Ya Missed Me, Sly Stone's looking like a one-man band on the cover, but the album's definitely got the full-on collaborative vibe of his early records with the Family Stone! The main man himself has plenty of charm, and still has that wonderful ear for a sharp-tinged funky cut – but he's also working in this mode that allows for other voices to come into the mix at times, and plenty of lively funky instrumentation underneath the lyrics – which really makes the whole thing feel like a party all the way through! Titles include "Sexy Situation", "What Was I Thinkin In My Head", "Mother Is A Hippie", and "Family Again". CD

Fantastic longform grooves from the Tabansi Studio Band – a cool combo who worked to support Nigerian artists on the Tabansi label, but who have a sound here that's very much their own! These tracks are a lot wilder and more freewheeling than any of the group's music behind a singer – and although there's some vocalizations on the record, the main focus is in the ever-shifting, always-groovy rhythms – and the brilliant mix of guitar, basslines, and sax parts that criss-cross the tunes! Most numbers are around the 15 minute mark, but build up in ways that are very different than more familiar Afro Funk – and titles include "Kama Sofoa", "Aka Ji Ego Ga Anu Nwam", "Wakar Alhazai", and "Lokoel Azumi Ta Wuce". Lightin/Now Again, 1975. New Copy 2CD ... $6.99 15.98
One of the strangest covers we've seen in years – and a perfect fit for this obscure session of unusual grooves! Drummer Bubbha Thomas is working here in a mode that's kind of an electrified 70s take on the Texas showband style of earlier years – a mode that has the core funky combo augmented by electric keys and moog in just the right places! The tunes on the set are all instrumentals – jamming along in a sweet little style that mixes funky jazz with some of the rougher touches of the indie 45 scene – letting the band stretch out on extended solos on most cuts, but still keeping the rhythms very tight and in the pocket! In a way, the approach almost feels like some of the funkier work on Tribe Records from Detroit, especially on tracks that have more ambitious solo work. Players include Doug Harris on flute and tenor, Ronnie Laws on tenor, John Henderson on electric piano, and a young Hugh Ragin on trombone – and titles include "Herbs Of Life", "Sweet Ray", "Famous Last Words", "Country Fried Chicken", and "Survival Song". 2CD version features a whole bonus disc of unusual material – rare alternates, unreleased disco tracks, and even some synth versions of tracks from Bubbha's first two albums – plus a big booklet of notes! Rare soul and heavy funk – all served up by one of the greatest labels going! It's hard to believe that Ace Records got their start some short 30 years ago – because for most of that time, we've come to trust the label more than anyone else for taking us back to the best older music of the 20th century. And while Ace was initially known for their reissue work in the R&B and rock n roll fields, over the past decade or so, the company's really taken center stage in funk and soul – with dozens and dozens of great CDs that have become huge Dusty Groove sellers over the years. This 20 track set is a low-priced dip into the best that Ace has to offer in the funk and soul fields – and honestly, although most of this stuff was issued elsewhere on Ace, the collection's still got a freshness that matches most of their full-priced CDs. Titles include "Brother Ratt" by Dave Hamilton, "Make Me Yours" by Betty Swann, "Hey Stoney Face" by Mary Love, "Too Much For You" by Bobby Angelle, "I'll See You In Hell First" by Phillip Mitchell, "Peace Love Not War" by Johnny King & Fatback Band, "Careful Man" by John Edwards, "Soul Feeling (part 1)" by Eddy Giles, "Got To Get Me A Job" by Ann Alford, and "I Can't Take It Any More" by The Persians. The "beats and pieces" this time around are mostly underground club tracks from the past few years – the cream of the crop of the best bits that hit our New Grooves section, often served up in harder-to-find mixes that represent the best version of the tunes so far! There's no overall stylistic logic to the set, which is what makes it so great – as mellow soul steps into funky club, into spacey fusion, global house, 21st century groove, then dancefloor jazz! 2CD set features 22 tracks that include "Wake Up" by Herbert, "La Malanga (Kenny Dope rmx)" by Bobby Hutcherson, "Fall Into You" by Stateless, "Hot In Here" by Tiga with Jake Shears, "Take Off (Nicola Conte's Campi's Idea version)" by Nathan Haines and Marco Di Marco, "Bukom Mashie" by Oscar Sulley & The Uhuru Dance Band, "Somebody New" by Georg Levin with Clara Hill, "Besides Myself" by DJ Shaheer Williams, "Timbuktu" by Pan African Electronic Beats, "Someone To Love" by Crusho, "Love & War (version)" by Amp Fiddler, "Forty Days" by Billy Brooks, and "Fall Into You" by Stateless. A huge discovery in music – most of which we've never heard before, and which shows that the Boston scene was getting pretty busy during the classic club years – even if the city's grooves never reached the same fame as cuts from New York, Philly, and other points south! The package is definitely a labor of love – put together by DJ/collector Serge Gamesbourg – who's clearly done a hell of a lot of work to unearth these rare singles and small label releases – records that maybe didn't even make it down to New York City back in the day, and which were probably crowed out of the record racks, even if they did! A lucky number 13 for the Brownswood Bubblers series – a great reminder that the compilation is still one of the best places we know for getting turned onto new music from the global underground! And by that, we don't mean the lame dance music "underground" of more than a decade ago – where this week's big track would go stale by the next. Soul Jazz (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A really tremendous collection of music – and one that really gets at the heart of the criss-crossing of Latin and African modes that took place on the Congolese scene of the 50s and 60s! Sounds and styles from Cuba and the Caribbean definitely influenced other African scenes, but they took an especially strong form in the Democratic Republic Of The Congo, and the Republic Of The Congo – where the percussion and rhythms wove in with West African styles of guitar, and also added some jazzy flourishes too – maybe a slight influence from the South African scene nearby. Whatever the logistics, though, the sound is great – still very fresh after all these years, and beautifully documented by Soul Jazz – at a level that really lives up to their great legacy of introducing ears to music in just the right way! This large package is an expanded version of their earlier 7" box set release for Record Store Day, with a lot more tracks – and titles include "Ngong Ebeti Independence" by African Jazz, "Marie Louise" by Wendo Kolosy, "Cherie Nini" by Rock A Mambo, "Grupo OK Jazz" by Grupo OK Jazz, "Yo Me Moera" by Begun Band, "Vive Patrice Lumumba" by African Jazz, "Luiza" by Essous Et Orchestre Bantou, "Allegria" by Nino & Rock-A-Mambo, "Tcha Tcha Tcha De Mi Amor" by Brazzos Et OK Jazz, "Sois Sage Amour" by Edo & OK Jazz, "Na Lingi Na Ngai Kubala Te" by Dewayon & Conga Jazz, and "Cha Cha Cha Del Zombo" by Brazzos Et OK Jazz. Dust To Digital, 1920s/1930s/1940s. New Copy 4CD ... $73.99
An amazing collection – and one that really lives up to the genius of the original Anthology Of American Folk Music put together by Harry Smith for Folkways Records! That groundbreaking set is the stuff of legend – a package that collected rare blues, folk, string band, hillbilly, and other styles from Smith's own collection of 78rpm singles – then brought together by Folkways with copious notes and a huge amount of detail that opened the door to this lost world of music for listeners over many decades. Here, the collection goes back to further Smith's choices – by offering up the flipside of all the records included in the original set – tracks that are almost always as great as the other sides, given that so many of these artists were getting a brief time in the studio, and really gave their all during the recordings. The package is one of the nicest we've ever seen on Dust To Digital – done with more than enough notes and packaging detail to live up to the spirit of the original – in a set of 84 tracks, with work by Dick Justice, Clarence Ashley, Coley Jones, Bill & Belle Reed, Buell Kazee, Buster Carter & Preston Young, Williamson Brothers & Curry, The Masked Marvel, William & Versey Smith, Carter Family, GB Grayson, Mississippi John Hurt, Uncle Eck Dunford, Uncle Bunt Stephens, Carolina Tar Heels, Furry Lewis, Ernest Phipps, Cannon's Jug Stompers, Richard Rabbit Brown, Rev Moses Mason, Alabama Sacred Harp Singers, Cincinnati Jug Band, Rev JM Gates, Jim Jackson, Breaux Freres, Blind Willie Johnson, Dock Boggs, Bascom Lamar Lunsford, Julius Daniels, Ramblin Thomas, Sleepy John Estes, and many others! CD
(Great package too – in a cigar box style, with a cool cork-covered book that has a massive amount of notes and images!)

VariousLocal Customs – Downriver Revival (CD & DVD) ... CD
Numero, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy CD & DVD ... $12.99 22.98
One of the coolest collections ever put out by The Numero Group – and that's saying a lot, given the hipness of the label! Downriver Revival chronicles the story of a unique studio in Michigan – Double U Sound, a custom recording spot that captured a wonderful range of soul, funk, gospel, and other sounds from the local community – beautifully presented here in a full CD, plus a bonus DVD that features the near-complete 200 song archive of the studio! The DVD's really unique – so we'll talk about it first: Done with an interactive menu that lets you literally comb through the boxes of tapes in the Double U vault – selecting each reel recorded by the studio, and sampling the rich array of wonderful sounds from this untapped Michigan scene – a huge amount of music, far more than you'd ever find on a CD compilation. The DVD also features a documentary on the studio and Downriver Revial project – and that alone would be worth the price of admission – but the CD then features 24 key numbers pulled from the vaults – tracks that were either issued on rare 45s, or never issued at all – and which represent a wonderful array of soulful sounds that definitely lives up to the Numero standard! Titles include "There's A Light" by Shirley Ann Lee, "Take Care Of Us" by The Revelations, "Untitled Jam" by Bobby Cook & The Explosions, "Foot Stumping (alt)" by Organics, "While You Were Gone" by Combinations, "Heaven" by Deliverance Echoes, "Untitled" by Burgess Band, "Round N Round" by Junior Mays Group, and "Walk With Me" by Calvin Cooke. VariousLondon Is The Place For Me Vols 7 & 8 – Calypso, Palm Wine, Mento, Joropo, Steel, & Stringband/Lord Kitchener In England 1948 to 1962 ... CD
Honest Jons (UK), 1950s. New Copy 2CD ... $24.99
A great double header from Honest Jons – a 2CD set that brings together volumes 7 and 8 of their London Is The Place For Me series! Volume 7 is first – a fascinating look at musical modes in London during the big years of postwar immigration – a time when former residents of the crumbling British Empire were flooding to London for jobs and a better way of life – often bringing along a huge amount of cultural experience in the process! This set follows wonderfully in the spirit of previous volumes of the series – bringing together a range of different sonic styles that were originally recorded in London as 78rpm singles – where a new wave of Caribbean and West African immigrants were fusing older styles with a newly modern sensibility, and often a fair bit of jazz as well! The set list is wonderful – a great array of well-chosen material – and titles include "Wa Sise" by Willie Payne & The Starlite Tempos, "The Emperor Of Africa" by The Mighty Terror, "Royal Wedding" by The Lion, "Modern Telephone" by Dai Dai Simba, "Sons & Daughters Of Africa" by Lord Beginner, "Caroline" by Trinidad Steel Band, "Ema Foju Ana Woku" by West African Rhythm Brothers, "Kana Kana" by Billy Sholanke, "Boul Ve Se" by Calypso Rhythm Kings, and "My Handy Man" by Marie Bryant. Volume 8 features a huge collection of work from the great Lord Kitchener – maybe one of the most important singers to move the music of the Caribbean to British shores during the postwar years – a time when he was a strong voice to new waves of immigrants arriving in London, and when he was also making a lot of inroads for criss-crossing post-colonial culture too! The base style is calypso, but Kitchener always handles the music with a spirit that's all his own – modern, witty, and urbane – often with some nice currents of jazz in the instrumentation, and plenty of social commentary that made music like this a great precursor to later righteous moments in jazz, funk, soul, and reggae. Titles include "No More Taxi", "Food From The West Indies", "Come Back In The Morning", "Pirates Of Paria", "Drink A Rum", "If You Brown", "Life Begins At Forty", "Mistress Jacob", "Africa My Home", "Kitch In The Jungle", "Tie Tongue Mopsie", and "London Is The Place For Me". BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $34.99 36.99
An incredible collection – and one that fills in a crucially under-documented side of the New York dancefloor generation – the wealth of special mixes and edits that were made for that city's important DJs for their own use in clubs! The package sorts through a mountain of never-issued acetates, and goes way past conventional disco or rare club collections – to showcase the special mixing talents these DJs brought to their re-presentation of the material – which was usually done on tape, then pressed onto acetate discs for their own private use! Those rare treasures are brought forth here – in a beautiful package that's also overflowing with fantastic notes that finally give this lost history its due – all handled by Al Kent – who's a hell of a mixer himself, as well as an underground club historian. 3CD set is overflowing with gems – and titles include "I Just Wanna Say I Love You (John Luongo rmx)" by Leon Collins, "What About Love (Tony Gioe rmx)" by Marboo, "Ten Percent (Walter Gibbons Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Double Exposure, "Inside America (Rick Gianatos disco queen acetate edit)" by Juggy Murray Jones, "Dancing Free (John Luongo rmx)" by Hot Ice, "Black Water Gold (Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by The Sunshine Band, "Magic Bird Of Fire (Francois Kevorkian Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Salsoul Orchestra, "It's Good For The Soul (Jay Negron Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Salsoul Orchestra, "My Love Is Free (Walter Gibbons disco madness rmx)" by Double Exposure, "Reaching Out For Happiness (Jonathan Fearing rmx)" by Fay Hauser, "Let Me Be Your Fantasy (Tom Savarese rmx)" by Love Symphony Orchestra, "The Beat Goes On & On (Jim Burgess rmx)" by Ripple, "I Wanna Be Near You (John Morales Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Ruby Andrews, "I've Been Looking For Somebody (Walter Gibbons rmx)" by TC James & The Fist O Funk Orchestra, "The Disco Scene (Rick Gianatos rmx)" by Lake Shore Drive, "Bumpsie's Whipping Cream (Tom Savarese rmx)" by TC James & The Fist O Funk Orchestra, "Janice (Bobby DJ Guttadoro rmx)" by Skip Mahoney, "My Number's Up (Tee Scott rmx)" by The Salsoul Orchestra, "The Love Bug Done Bit Me Again (David Todd rmx)" by Skyliners, "LA Sunshine (Robert Ouimet rmx)" by Aura, "Love Has Come My Way (Jim Burgess rmx)" by Tony Valor Sound Orchestra, "Handsome Ma (Bobby DJ Guttadoro rmx)" by Sparkle Tuhran & Friends, "Love Thang (Tee Scott rmx)" by First Choice, "Burn Me Up (Jellybean Benitez edit)" by Kay Gees, "Love Is The Message (Tee Scott rmx)" by Brooklyn Express, "Changes (Jellybean Benitez rmx)" by Chain Reaction, "J'Ouvert (Frank Sestito rmx)" by John Gibbs & The Jam Band, "By The Way You Dance (Bobby DJ Guttadaro rmx)" by Bunny Sigler, "It's Good For The Soul (Walter Gibbons disco madness version)" by Salsoul Orchestra, and "It's A Better Than Good Time (Walter Gibbons rmx)" by Gladys Knight & The Pips. African Road Trip (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $22.99
Very underground work from the late 70s and early 80s – a selection of tracks that are mostly new to our ear, and which definitely move along the clubbier side of the West African spectrum! A number of these tunes have core elements that resonate with American disco of the time – but with vocals, instrumentation, and rhythms that also echo the tightening up of Afro Funk in Lagos and other scenes as the 70s came to a close. There's not a huge amount in the way of notes, but the set's a great batch of Afro Disco goodies – with tracks that include "Feeling" by K3 Band, "Esimo Esimo" by Peter Mukoko, "Sexy Man" by Tany Welck, "Africa Land Of Soul" by G Lawani, "Hoo Dou Hoo Mine" by Django Strong, "Give It Everything You Got", by Jide Obi, and "Africa" by Fotso. BBE (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2CD ... $8.99 16.98
A fantastic funky follow-up to the first Mr Thing compilation from BBE – and a set that's equally filled with rare and soulful grooves! If we didn't know better, we'd swear he went into our crates and pilfered our own record collections – because the package contains plenty of overlooked cuts that we've loved for years, but which have never gotten their due – and not even all of them are from totally obscure pressings or small indie labels – just the kind of records that people pass over sometimes, because they don't know how great they sound! There's lots and lots and lots of deeply funky numbers on the collection – and the package really takes us back to the glory days when BBE compilations were always turning us onto something new – especially during the Keb Darge glory days. 2CD set features one mixed disc, one unmixed – with titles that include "Back Ground Music" by Kalyanji Anandji, "Searching For Soul" by Jake Wade & The Soul Searchers, "ABC" by Hot Butter & Soul, "Spooky Do" by Dick Walter, "The Horse" by Val Merral's Orchestra, "It's Just Begun" by Hot City Bump Band, "Sally" by Frank Pleyer Big Band, "Love Is Just A Word" by Johnny Griffith Inc, "Can't Stop Talkin" by Art & Ron, "Family Affair" by The Generation Gap, "Gacek" by Jerzy Milian, "Rockin Chair" by John L Watson with White Mouse, "Pink Panther" by Alan Tew, "Twinkle Stars Boo Galoo (live)" by Oscar Harris & The Twinkle Stars, "The Message" by Tinga Stewart, and "Pru Urebu" by The Rias Orchestra. Rhino, Late 60s/1970s. Used 4 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
One of the funkiest box sets we've ever seen – and amazingly issued by an American major label! The 4CD package is a treasure trove of funky work from a decade of Warner Brothers, Atlantic Records, and related labels – tunes pulled both from mainstream album releases and much more obscure 45s – all expertly collected here into a whopping batch of 91 tracks, all packaged in a cool little box with an 80 page booklet! This one goes way past some of the silly "decade" sets from Rhino, and really displays a new level of cool and connoisseurship – one that finally appreciates the rich depths of funky work at their fingertips, most of which has not been properly reissued in the US! Pye/Vocalion (UK), 1974/1975. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two great albums from Ray "funky trumpet" Davies – not the lead singer of The Kinks, but a heck of a groovy British bandleader from the 70s! First up is an album of Themes From The Exorcist and other films – all familiar movie themes from the early 70s, penned by artists like Michel Legrand and Lalo Schifrin – but served up here by Ray's Button Down Brass in a very cool style – compressed funk, ala the best crime/cop modes of the time – but with lots of individual touches that make the songs very different than the original versions! Titles include "Point Blank", "Enter The Dragon", "Klute", "French Connection", "Tubular Bells", "Cops & Robbers", and "Beyond Tomorrow". Flashpoint continues with some great film themes again served up in the magic Ray Davies mode – a funky big band approach that makes the record every bit as compelling as the American Cop Shows album from Henry Mancini – but maybe groovier, too. Titles include "Kojak", "Big Boss", "Man With The Golden Gun", "Mr Majestyk", "Magnum Force", "Fist Of Fury", and "Airport 1975". CD

Stereolab at a creative peak! It's got a beautiful subdued quality to it, but it's also so expertly layered that you'll always here something new, as long as you keep coming back to it. Stunning sounds from the Disques Debs label in the 70s – a powerhouse imprint in the French Caribbean scene, and a company who were really coming into their own during the decade! The "cadence revolution" in the title is a reference both to the revolution in new musical sounds that Debs was helping encourage, and the rise of the cadence style in Guadeloupe and Martinique – a mode that borrows the faster rhythms of Haitian music, then folds together some elements of Afro-Cuban styles, and maybe just a touch of West African influence – part of that back/forth activity across the Atlantic that seemed to happen so effortlessly during the 60s and 70s. A good number of the tracks here are nice and long – pulled from Debs LPs, not just 45s – and as with the first volume, the package does a great job of providing plenty of historical context, information on the music, and some great vintage images too. Titles include "Ambiance" by Les Vikings, "Lina Femm Foll" by Smoke, "Lage Yo" by Koumbit, "Disco Funk" by Galaxy, "Ping Pong" by Guy Conquette & Son Groupe, "Experience" by Tabou No 2, "Moin Domi Derho" by Super Combo, "Good Trip" by HWT Band, "Stranger" by Midnight Groovers, and "Moin Ce Roi Roi" by Guadafrica Combo. BBE (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The title says "jazz", but there's a lot more going on here – a range of groundbreaking sounds and styles from the 70s, with some sweet electric modes, occasional Latin rhythms, currents of soul, and even a bit of Brazilian too! The package really takes us back to the kind of rare tracks we first started digging decades ago – when collectors from London and Tokyo were really helping us appreciate the kinds of records we might have passed by in the racks – the lesser names, the smaller labels, and even the more globally expansive range of releases that could sometimes be missed if you were only digging for American jazz! That range of music is really represented here in a great way – with tunes that soar strongly and bristle with energy throughout – sometimes in modes that might echo a label like MPS or Strata East, but often in very unique styles of their own. Titles include "Maryke" by John Thomas & Lifeforce, "La Em Guayaquil" by Banda Metalurgia, "Samba For A Cold Warrior" by Belair, "Samba De Amor" by Francisco Mora Catlett, "Little Sunflower" by Louis Hayes with Leon Thomas, "The World Is A Ghetto" by Lee Willhite, "No Other Love But You" by Clarice Labbe & Charlie Hampton, "Misturada" by Finn Savery Trio, "Kingdom Within You" by Ira Sullivan, and "Latinetta" by Ronald Snijders. Black Saint/BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tremendous look at one of the coolest jazz labels of all time – and one that has an especially strong focus on the more spiritual side of its music! The paired Black Saint and Soul Note labels came along from the Italian scene right at a time when so many other American companies were shutting their doors – former spiritual jazz powerhouses like Strata East, Impulse, and Black Jazz were moving beyond the music, or disappearing entirely – which made the role of Black Saint/Soul Note such a crucial one! The company came into the game at a time of boundless creativity in American jazz – and really captured a post-Coltrane generation that was brimming over with fire and new ideas, but just needed a place to find expression – which it did at the label, who recorded dozens of albums in the space of less than a decade, nearly all of which have gone onto become classics over the years. And while there's a side of the label that's much more free jazz and avant garde, the cuts here reflect a Black Saint/Soul Note that's just slightly inside – tunes that are still freewheeling, but also have a rhythmic core – and the kinds of open, soaring solos that were first inspired in the 60s generation of Coltrane and Shepp. The choice of cuts is great – similar to the others in the If Music series – and titles include "Mr Seven" by M'Booom, "Joycie Girl" by Don Pullen with Sam Rivers, "Il Giro Del Giorno In 80 Mondi" by Enrico Rava, "Oasis" by Hamiet Bluiett, "Confessin" by John Stubblefield, "Joobubie" by George Adams & Dannie Richmond, "Verde Que Eu Te Quero Ver" by Rava String Band, "Down Home In New York" by Archie Shepp, "BK" by Air, and "The Nagual Julian" by Billy Bang Sextet. Perhaps the best officially-released Dead live album of it's time – the epic self-titled/Skull & Roses – one that finds the Dead at an early high point! The Grateful Dead are best remembered all these years later for their post-reunion tours and in their roles as the unrivaled fathers of all jam bands – but if you're asking us about The Dead, we'll tell you that these fellas don't get the critical respect they deserve for some of their most concise original songs. Kapp, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the grooviest groups of the Latin Soul scene – but they'd have to be, given their name! The Latin Souls are a vocal group with a really soulful feel – a great link between the earlier harmony sounds that were bubbling under in Spanish Harlem, and some of the hipper rhythms that were hitting the scene in the late 60s – particularly the two dance modes pushed strongly in the title of the record! Many of the cuts have a nicely dark undercurrent – a bit like the best work of Ralph Robles – but the harmonies give the record a somewhat more sincere feel too, with echoes of Joe Bataan in the mix. The whole thing's great – with production from Pancho Cristal that's right up there with his other great Latin sides of the 60s. ✨✧ VariousExotic Blues & Rhythm Vols 11 & 12 – Eeny Meeny/Loc A Li – Blues & Rhythm, Popcorn, Exotica, & Tittyshakers ... CD
Stag O Lee (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful sounds from that amazing time in American music – a period when it seemed that there were so many records being made, new sounds were always finding a way to get onto vinyl! This collection represents an excellent criss-crossing of modes – exotic styles finding their way into soul, jazz, blues, R&B, and even a little bit of rock – thanks to plenty of weird instrumental modes used to great effect in the studio, and some nicely heavy percussion too! There's no set genre on the collection, but the music is all nicely unified in a fantasy of the exotic – which makes for some plenty playful tracks throughout. CD features the full tracks from the 10" vinyl releases Loc-A-Li and Eeny Meeny – and titles include "Jack Hammer" by Rusty Evans, "Eeny Meeny Minie Mo" by Little Luther, "Yabucoa" by Hector Rivera, "Princess Of Persia" by Billy Grammer, "Call Of The Jungle" by Carl Stevens, "I'm Hurted" by Mamie Perry, "Say There" by Wes Reynolds, "Shakin All Over" by Tommy Bruce, "Oh Lord Give Me Back My Baby" by Bobby Nichols, "Loc A Li" by Little Victor & His Jivin Five, "The Magic Ring" by Dante & Friends, "Don't Leave My Arms" by Terry Phillips, and "Ain't That Bad" by Pancho Villa & The Bandits. ✨✧ Bobby MatosSessions ... CD
CuBop/Ubiquity, 1980s/1990s. Used ... Out Of Stock
After having such great success with their two recent Bobby Matos recordings, Cubop has gone ahead and put together this great collection of material that Bobby recorded over the past 15 years. It includes a few tracks recorded for Cubop and not released at the time (including a very funky Latin version of "Chameleon"), some that were only issued in limited editions, and a number that came out on a now-out of print release called Collage. As with all of Bobby's releases, the CD is a great batch of Latin jazz that never lets up for a minute. The band is always tight, the music's always smokin, and the choice of material is excellent. With "The Creator Has A Master Plan", "Mi Guaguanco", and "Afro Cubisimo". CD

✨✧ VariousBody Beat – Soca Dub & Electronic Calypso 1979 to 1998 (3LP set) ... LP
Soundway (UK), Late 70s/1980s/1990s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great set that moves towards the farther reaches of the Caribbean scene in the 80s – music that's much more underground than some of the bigger soca and tropical hits of the time! As you might expect from the Soundway label, the work here is a very unusual, very well-done presentation of a fresh slice of global music – Caribbean cuts that borrow bits from electro soul, house music, and other styles of the time – and weave the newer elements into island rhythms with a very forward-thinking feel! The tunes are heavy on keyboards and beats, yet still have a indie soul sort of charm – and as usual with Soundway, the whole thing comes with very detailed notes on the music. Most tunes are b-sides, dubs, or edits – and titles include "Last Days" by The Millers, "Wild Indian Band" by Andre Tanker, "Zion Gates (dub)" by Mohjah, "I Want Your Love" by Peter Britto, "Hotter & Hotter (dub edit)" by Juno D, "D'Jab Jab Dance (bad lad mix)" by Colin Jackman, "Fighting Soldier" by Cito Jarvis, "Stand Up & Rock Your Body (inst)" by Roger Bain, "Fire (ext dub edit)" by D Ivan, "Body Beat" by Bill Campbell, and "It's Alright" by Adonijah. ✨✧ Art BlakeyBuhaina's Delight ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. Used ... $7.99
A landmark recording by a whole new chapter in Art Blakey's career! During the early 60s, Blakey expanded the Jazz Messengers from a quintet to an incredibly tight sextet – adding in the trombone of Curtis Fuller for an extra-punched up frontline that also included Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and Wayne Shorter on tenor, who had returned to the group after a short departure. The band was augmented by the wonderfully lyrical and soulful piano of a young Cedar Walton – who brought a strong degree of sophistication, and who was a perfect interpreter of Shorter's rich writing talents. The whole group performs together perfectly on this wonderful (and oft-overlooked) session – especially on the tracks "Shaky Jake", "Backstage Sally", and "Bu's Delight". This CD has four bonus tracks: alternate takes of "Moon River", "Backstage Sally", "Reincarnation Blues" and "Bu's Delight". CD

Blue Note, 1962. Used ... $11.99
Phenomenal live material from the sextet-era version of the Jazz Messengers! This 2-volume CD series takes a small amount of live material that was originally issued under the 3 Blind Mice title, and adds a huge amount of previously unreleased tracks to expand both CDs into a whopping batch of hardbop killers. The group includes Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, and Cedar Walton – and the live setting shows the band at their finest, able to trade lines and invent solos with amazing dexterity. This second volume includes the cuts "Mosaic", "The Promised Land", "Arabia", and "Ping Pong" – all of which are some of the best tracks ever written for the group! CD

Cornell CampbellI Man A The Stal-A-Watt (2CD deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Third World/17 North Parade, 1976. New Copy ... $14.99 16.98
The title's a bit confusing, but Cornell Campbell's essentially saying that he's a stalwart – something we can completely agree with, given his strong legacy in Jamaican music – and the sublime sound of a 70s classic like this! Cornell's got a higher range than some of his contemporaries, but never in a way that makes his music sound too light or airy at all – because there's a sense of soul going on that maybe stands as a Jamaican counterpart to 70s Marvin Gaye, especially in the way that Campbell inflects his notes on the sweeter tunes on the set! Most of the production is handled by Bunny Lee or Joe Gibbs – and titles include "The Gorgon", "The Stal-A-Watt", "The Investigator", "Hypocrite", "Two Face Rasta", "Two Timer", "Boxing Around", and "Bandulu". 2CD set features 19 more bonus tracks – including "Conscious Rastaman", "The Gorgon Speaks", "Help Them O Lord", "Gun Court Law", "Dance In A Greenwich Farm", "Lion Of Judah", "Natty Dread In A Greenwich Farm", "I Shall Not Remove", and "Give Me Love". Don CunninghamSomething For Everyone (2020 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Luv N' Haight, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... On November 27, 2020
A strange little record – but one with some very groovy moments! The album is a rare relic from the St Louis scene of the early 60s – cut by the combo of Don Cunningham, the house act at that city's Playboy club at the time! Don borrows heavily from the styles of Martin Denny, Bobby Montez, Earl Grant, and Nat King Cole – but he also puts the work together with a jazzier edge than you'd expect, one that makes for more than a few really great moments that have made the album a treasure for groove hounds for years! The album sports a mad reading of "Quiet Village", one that has the band getting really crazy with percussion and birdcalls, hardly "quiet" at all! The real standout, though, is the group's cover of "Tabu" – done with a great percussion break on the intro, and a chugging Latin groove that's sure to burn up any dancefloor! Also great is the album's two Brazilian-tinged numbers – jazzy remakes of "Manha De Carnival" and "Samba De Orpheus" – both of which feature some great percussion! (Note: This item is not for sale online until noon on Friday, November 27. It is in limited supply – and by nature of the Record Store Day Drops rules it will be offered for sale first to customers who visit the Dusty Groove retail outlet in Chicago the morning of Friday, November 27. Jazzland (UK), 2002. Used ... $7.99
Another one of those ultra-hip groups on Norway's Jazzland label – led by guitarist Jon Eberson, and featuring Bugge Wesseltoft on keyboards and bass, Pal Thowsen on drums, Tom Erik Antonsen on bass, and Strangefruit on vinyl! A few tracks also feature vocals by Beate – and the overall style of the set is somewhere between funky ECM and early 80s New York bass-driven avant jazz funk, such as the work of Melvin Gibbs. The more modern touches of the Jazzland style make the record sound fresher than that description might imply – and titles include "Pushing The Beat", "Victim Of Own Desires", "Everlasting Star", "Dreams That Went Astray", "Clandestined Band", and "You Passed Me Like A Wind". Capitol, 1979. Sealed ... $6.99
A lot more clubby than the group's earlier funk albums – fast, uptempo, and clearly headed for the dancefloors, where the record actually scored a bit. The band's jazzy playing is still in place, but it's kind of hidden behind disco and pop arrangements, and by the lead vocals by Linda Taylor and Alan Marshall. Titles include "Dance Machine", "Move It To The Music", "Peoples Party", and "Take Me The Way". LP, Vinyl record album

Green Arrows4 Track Recording Session ... CD
Analog Africa (Germany), Mid 70s. Used ... $6.99
An amazing tribute to The Green Arrows – an ultra-hip combo from the 70s scene in Zimbabwe! The group had a sound that was dubbed "waka-waka" by its fans – thanks to unique guitar parts that wobble back and forth with the rhythmic groove of the tunes – often recorded with a bit of echo, in ways that make them sound slightly psychedelic! The music here isn't as funky or wild as reissues of other African work of the time – but it's still pretty darn unique, with a groove that's very hard to peg – and a standout quality that really lives up to the mighty look of this package. As with other Analog Africa collections, the whole thing comes with a great batch of notes – really detailed history of the band and their music – supported with a double-length selection of tunes that includes "Infalilibe Chisoni", "Hurungwe", "Wasara Wasara", "Chimamuna Chamimba", "Nhengure", "Chipo Chiroorwa", "Nkosi's Intro", and "Mwana Waenda". One of Slide Hampton's first albums – and a massively hard-wailing set that will make any doubters sit up and take notice! The set really packs a punch – as Slide leads a hip group that features Freddie Hubbard, Richard Williams, Bernard McKinney, and George Coleman through some tightly woven arrangements that manage to swing with the grace of small combo work, yet wail with the intensity of a big band. Great solos pop out all over the set – and there's a soul jazz groove that makes the album sound like a classic Prestige session. The first full album we've ever heard from Kon – and a really soulful set that follows strongly off his famous mixtapes and compilations with Amir! As on those gems, there's a very classic sound going on here – a strong love of the best moments of 70s soul, funk, and club – delivered with some surprisingly contemporary inflections at times – mostly in the way Kon uses studio elements to help wrap together his influences in a seamless, effortless groove! Rhythms step up strongly at all the right moments – sometimes club funk, sometimes a bit more soulful house – and the album features guest appearances from Amy Douglas, Georg Levin, Induce, and Ben Westbeech – plus some mixing help from Caserta. Rare funky soul from Ghanaian disco diva Nana Love – the rare, appropriately-titled Full Of Funk record from 1979 – with dynamite vocals by Nana and featuring Ghana legend Harry Mosco and other incredible players in the studio band! Nana's voice is uniquely amazing – with a sweet, girlish tone that builds to a lioness roar on occasion – which is incredibly compelling – and sung entirely in English. The band provides a wicked backdrop of funky dancefloor soul – propelled by fantastic guitarwork by Mosco, Paul Pryce and Les Forrest, killer basslines by Grek Haywood, sax and flute by Humphrey Okoh, percussion by Ayindi, drums by Tony Martin, synth and clavinet by Adrian Bennett and piano by Richard Reid. This great version from BBE includes 5 bonus tracks not on the original release – and the titles include "I'm in Love", "Whe Gonna Stay For The Party", "Talking About Music", "Disco Lover", "When The Heart Decides", "Reach Out My Hand", "Hang On Baby", "Loving Feeling (Dance Mix)" and "Loving Feeling (Instrumental)". Many cuts here are instrumental, but a few feature blue-eyed vocals from Craig – gliding in nicely alongside the combo's tight reeds and guitar – plus Peyton's own work on vibes and "orgasmitron"! The overall approach is soulful fusion, with a nice sense of focus – but a groove that's always funky, and never commercial – and the album's got some great rare nuggets that would be right at home in the CTI side of the universe. Stunning! This is a beautiful album that's one of Max Roach's most powerful recordings, and a record that's been the inspiration for countless other imitations over the years. Roach leads a group with Richard Williams, Clifford Jordan, and Mal Waldron – and they're matched with a vocal chorus led by Coleridge Perkinson, who also did the arrangements for Donald Byrd's classic "with voices" albums. Unlike those, though, this set's a damn angry bunch of compositions, and the chorus wails away in a loud screaming powerful mode that will blow away any of your preconceptions about the "with voices" mode. The group sings wordless vocals (except for one cut, which has Abbey Lincoln singing in the lead), and provides a searing backdrop of sound for the band's razor sharp playing. Every cut's a winner, and the whole thing's a masterpiece! Titles include "The Profit", "It's Time", and "Another Valley". CD

The School Days quartet is further augmented by another member this go 'round, Kjell Nordeson on vibes, as they continue to explore themes inspired by and written by modernists of a different period in improvised music, like Bobby Hutcherson, Bill Evans, and Larry Young – a great example of the inspirations that move the genius of group leader, reedman Ken Vandermark. Kjell can be heard elsewhere as the drummer for Mats Gustafson's AALY trio, and is joined by his bandmate from that group here on bass, Ingebrit Haker-Flaten, with another Swede, Paal Nilssen Love on drums, while Chicagoan Ken Vandermark is joined by one of our city's other hidden gems on the frontline, Jeb Bishop on trombone.
