Jakky Boy & The Bad BunchJakky Boy & The Bad Bunch ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1985. Used ... $9.99
The second set from Jakky Boy & The Bunch – an overlooked group with a great 80s groove – one who started things out during the later years of Salsoul, and sound equally nice here on Atlantic! The album's a bit more polished than the group's debut, but still has all that street soul crackle we like in their music – 80s funk, with heavy emphasis on beats and basslines – handled with a tightness that keeps a focus on all the best elements in the grooves, without trying to much for a catchy hook or crossover hit. There's plenty of electro keyboards throughout – and titles include "Are You Ready", "Talking Japanese", "Don't Go", "Your Love Has Turned Me Out", "Rock Your Body", "Teaser", and "What Are You Gonna Do". CD

Jakky Boy & The Bad BunchI've Been Watching You (with bonus track) ... CD
Salsoul/Octave (Japan), 1983. New Copy ... $22.99
An overlooked gem from the early 80s years at Salsoul – a set that's beat-heavy, and plenty funky too – with a groove that's nicely heavy on both roller skate and electro modes! The record's a bit more offbeat than the usual Salsoul set – and we mean that in a good way – more in the street-styled mode you'd hear on the Vaughan Mason/Butch Dayo collaboration for the label – and proof that the company had a strong ear for grooves that go way beyond disco! There's plenty of surprises here – and the approach to the grooves has a very New York feel that mixes together the best of the up-and-downtown modes of the time. Titles include "Angel Baby", "Come To Me", "Rock The Rhythm", "I've Been Watching You", "Holdin On", and "I Need Your Love". CD features a bonus track – "I've Been Watching You (original single)". ✨✧ Art BlakeyGolden Boy ... CD
EMI/Warner (Japan), 1964. Used ... $16.99
An obscure Jazz Messengers session – but a great one! The album is ostensibly a set of jazz versions of tunes from the musical Golden Boy, and the group this time is a larger one than usual – a total of 10 players, led by Blakey – and playing beautifully over arrangements from Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, and Cedar Walton! The style's not any sort of clunky "jazz meets Broadway" mode, though – as the care taken by the artists involved help elevate the tunes, and the performance, to a whole new soulful level – hardly what you'd expect! The group features trumpet work from Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard, tenor from Wayne Shorter, alto from James Spaulding, trombone from Curtis Fuller, baritone from Charles Davis, piano from Cedar Walton, and bass from Reggie Workman – all very hip cats, working here with the same sort of large group textures you might hear on Freddie Hubbard's Body & Soul album from the same time, mixed with some more traditionally Blakey-led moments. Titles include "Yes I Can", "Theme From Golden Boy", "Lorna's Here", "This is The Life", and "There's A Party". CD

NASA landed a man on the moon in 1969, and David Bowie landed himself on the charts – with the classic "Space Oddity", presented here in a really great package that includes the original 45rpm mono mix, plus a stunning new 2019 mix as well! The set also features "The Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud" – one of our favorite early Bowie tunes ever, and one that sounds definitely different in the mono mix too! The whole thing comes in a great limited box, with great bonus bits – and longtime Bowie producer Tony Visconti handled the 2019 mixes. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Includes photo print with double sided photo – and new pic sleeves for both singles too!)

Ray CampiEager Beaver Boy/Rockabilly Lives ... CD
Rollin Rock/Bear Family (Germany), 1974/1976. New Copy ... $13.99 24.99
Two later albums from the great Ray Campi – an early rockabilly wildman, and one who managed to keep on going well through the 70s underground – all without losing a beat! Rockabilly Lives is the first album up here – recorded in LA in 1974, with this really raw sound, and a mode that's maybe even more faithful to the idea of a romping rockabilly style than most of the late 50s singles on Sun Records! Most numbers just feature a very heavy acoustic bass setting up the groove that everyone else is bound to follow – including Ray, whose raw vocals haven't lost any bit of their edge, so much so that his guitar often takes second place. Titles include "Let Er Roll", "Ballin Keen", "Blue Ranger", "Hot Dog", "Rock It", and "Boogie Boogie Boo". Eager Beaver Boy features Ray with an expanded lineup, but one that only seems to let Campi get even more wild and crazy upfront on his own! Ray's got this vocal style that could put Tenpole Tudor to shame – dipping, cresting, and inflecting all these amazing notes alongside his mighty basslines as they cook up the tunes. Titles include "Pinball Millionaire", "Eager B B Beaver Boy", "Pretty Mama", "One Part Stops Where The Other Begins", "Wicked Wicked Woman", "Parts Unknown", "Play Anything", and "Major Label Blues". Tal FarlowGuitar Genius – The Gibson Boy – The LA Sessions ... CD
Verve/Giant Steps (UK), Mid 50s. New Copy 2CD ... $6.99 13.99
Sublime early work from the legendary Tal Farlow – the kind of sides that show by he was one of the most important jazz guitarists of the 50s! The bulk of the 2CD set features LA sessions recorded for Norman Granz during Farlow's early years at Verve – dates from 1954 and 1955 that often feature Tal's hollow body guitar right out front in the mix, over backing from Gerald Wiggins, Claude Williamson, Red Mitchell, Chico Hamilton, and others. One session features some added horn work by Bob Enelvoldsen, Bill Perkins, and Bob Gordon – and the package features 29 mid 50s titles that include "Tal's Blues", "Little Girl Blue", "Autumn In New York", "I Like To Recognize The Tune", "I Remember You", "It's You Or No One", "Tenderly", "Lullaby Of The Leaves", "Tea For Two", "This Is Always", "Walkin", "Will You Still Be Mine", and "Lorinesque". Added to these are a handful of earlier tunes recorded when Tal was in the Red Norvo trio – really beautiful work that features Farlow's guitar next to bass from Charles Mingus and vibes from Red! Titles include "Godchild", "This Can't Be Love", "Move", "Swedish Pastry", and "Cheek To Cheek". CD

Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99
Two originally-unissued 60s soul tracks – back to back on a 45! "When The Boy That You Love" is a sweet stepper from Peggy Gaines – a track that has a nice slow swing in the groove, which sets up a bright sound that's perfect for Peggy's interpretation of the lyric – positive and upbeat, but with a nice current of sadness too! "Everybody Knows" is more of a slow burner, with some great vibes at the core – ringing out sparely next to the slower drums that set the pace for the tune. Peggy's vocals are great on both – and we're not sure why we haven't heard more from her over the years! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Duncan Hannah20th Century Boy – Notebooks Of The Seventies (hardcover) ... Book
Alfred A Knopf, 2018. New Copy ... $8.99 28.95
Painter Duncan Hannah dropped into the New York scene right at the start of the 70s – and spent most of the decade being right where the action is – from shows, to clubs, to parties, and a host of other cultural hotspots – eventually leading the kind of life most of us can only dream about! And during that time, Hannah kept very detailed diaries of his very wild life – and here pulls together all those 70s diary entries into a vivid tale of his wild New York years of the 70s – partly using text from the originals, and partly writing his own memoirs along the way – which makes the whole thing a pretty great read, and one that moves pretty darn fast over the course of nearly 500 pages. Hardcover, 476 pages, with some black and white images. Book

John Sebastian composed the whole score, and unlike most of the other albums by The Lovin Spoonful, this one's got a lot of instrumental numbers, arranged by the great Artie Schroek – short little grooves with a really nice feel, and mixes of percussion, horns, and guitar that come off with a great groovy 60s sound! The vocal numbers are pretty great too – and titles include the sublime "Darling Be Home Soon", plus "Miss Thing's Thing", "Letter To Barbara", "March", "The Finale", "Try & Be Happy", "Wash Her Away", and "Lonely". ✨✧ Cybill ShepherdMad About The Boy ... LP
Inner City, 1976. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
Surprisingly wonderful work by Cybill Shepherd – recorded early in her career, and a very serious attempt to express herself as a jazz vocalist! Part of the reason for the success is the fact that Cybill's working here with a great group that includes Stan Getz on tenor, Frank Rosolino on trombone, Monty Budwig on bass, and other west coast players – but another part of the success is Cybill's warm and sweet vocals, as evocative at this point as she was in her fine performances on film. Instrumentation often hits a cool, breezy sort of sound – almost bossa at some of the best points, which really transforms the older tunes! Titles include "Triste", "I Can't Get Started", "I'm Falling In Love Again", "Do It Again", "Speak Low", "It Never Entered My Mind", and a great grooving take on "Mad About The Boy". Elektra, 1978. Very Good+ ... $16.99
An early moment of genius from Warren Zevon – the kind of record that really set his talents part from the singer/songwriter generation that came before – and made Zevon a key part of a new era of much darker songsmiths! Zevon manages to weave in all these strange moody elements while still delivering songs that are tuneful – often with studio talent that goes back to an earlier generation of LA polish, but which manages to have a bit more edge here in Warren's company. The lasting highlight of the record is probably the oft-played "Werewolves Of London" – but the whole thig is filled with gems – titles that include "Accidentally Like A Martyr", "Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner", "Nighttime In The Switching Yard", "Tenderness On The Block", "Veracruz", and "Lawyers Guns & Money". BBE (UK), 2014. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 14.99
A great selection of future soul tracks, all handpicked by radio DJ Radhu – an American talent with ears that may well rival those of Gilles Peterson for finding the sounds we'll all enjoy tomorrow! The work here is from a wide range of the soulful underground – not just Neo Soul, but work inspired by a number of different styles and modes – selected and spaced perfectly by Radhu, so that the freshness of one track really seems to infect another! We honestly hadn't heard of most of the artists here before – as they're true "bubblers", picked from the lesser-known corners of the underground. Titles include "Calm" by Gdna, "Silence (midnight mix)" by Jevon Reynolds, "Shangri La" by James Tillman, "Diligence" by Stephanie Nicole, "Intoxicated" by Joomanji, "Fallen" by Rippy Austin, "Where Did We Go Wrong" by Anu Sun, and "Ultraviolet" by Aisha Mars. Honest Jons, Late 40s/1950s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
An incredible collection from Honest Jons – and like some of the rest of their best, music we never would have heard otherwise! The focus here is on calypso music, but recorded in West Africa – not the usual Caribbean setting – a very unusual strain of styles that cropped up in the fading colonial years of the British Empire – as rhythms were routed southward to Africa, via Caribbean migration to the London scene – making for some really fresh sounds in the end! The work is often much heavier on percussion than its more familiar variant – and other instrumentation includes some great horn parts, and bits of guitar – alongside vocals on most numbers. As usual, the notes are historically helpful and very well done – and titles include "Scrubbs Na Marvellous Boy" and "Poor Freetown Boy" by Famous Scrubbs, "Olubunmi" by Roy Chicago, "Ariwo" by Chris Ajilo & His Cubanos, "Taxi Driver" and "Gentlemen Bobby" by Bobby Benson & His Combo, "Mami" by The Rhythm Aces, "Arria Baby" and "Fire Fire Fire" by Ebenezer Calender & His Maringer Band, "Tree & The Monkey" by ET Mensah, and "Yabomisa Sawale" by Victor Olaiya. Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A set that's every bit as wonderful as you'd guess from its title and cover – a killer package of all-girl rockers, and one that's filled with rare gems from the 60s! The material here is definitely a lot harder-hitting than more familiar girl group sounds of the 60s – as the tunes are drenched in plenty of fuzz, recorded with a garagey style, and often rock just as hard as any male cuts from the time! Most material is by US groups, but there's also some surprising gems from overseas too – and the package is a much-needed look at this under-documented side of 60s rock and roll. Titles include "I'm Gonna Destroy That Boy" by The What Four, "I've Been Workin On You (demo)" by The Feminine Complex, "You Don't Love Me" by The Starlets, "Climb That Tree" by She Trinity, "Fraternity USA" by The Lady Bugs, "Here I Am In Love Again" by The Girls, "The Beatles Are In Town" by The Fondettes, "Don't You Think It's Fine" by Project X, "Hold On" by Sharon Tandy, "Tell Me" by The Termites, "He's Something Else" by The Liverbirds, and "Shakin All Over" by Raylene & The Blue Angels. ✨✧ Jim CarrollCatholic Boy (magenta vinyl pressing) ... LP
Atco/Fat Possum, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A totally great album from the early years of the New York punk scene – and a set that will be remembered as the moment of musical glory for the legendary Jim Carroll! As with Tom Verlaine, Richard Hell, and Patti Smith – Carroll has roots in writing, but energy that needs music to really set it on fire – sounds that explode here with the intensity of the generation who lived through the city on fire, the garbage strike, and all the other tumult of NYC in the late 70s – an experience that's also added to Jim's young struggles with addiction. The music is every bit as sharp as Carroll's lyrics – and in addition to the seminal "People Who Died", the record sparkles with tunes that include "Three Sisters", "Nothing Is True", "Wicket Gravity", "City Drops Into Night"< "Crow", "I Want The Angel", and "Catholic Boy". PMG (Austria), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sweet grooves from Harry Mosco – once the leader of The Funkees, but stepping out here with some wicked work from the London scene at the end of the 70s! The album's got a snapping electric vibe – sometimes clubby, but with more of a funk feel overall – thanks to some heavy basslines that really give the best cuts a kind of darkness – as do the horns, which create these down-turning inflections that are quite different than the usual sort of Afro-styled groove! Things get pretty freewheeling as the album moves on – and there's a criss-crossing of modes that almost reminds us of some of the work that Ice cut on the French scene of the time. Titles include "I Feel Funky", "Harry's Party", "It's Too Late", "Country Boy", and "Wanderer". CD

Boogie Down ProductionsCriminal Minded (2LP red vinyl edition with bonus track) ... LP
B-Boy/Traffic, 1986. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $19.99 24.98
One of the best debuts in the history of hip hop – and one of the most important albums the genre ever produced! Criminal Minded is a landmark for a number of reasons. Among the biggest is, of course, that it was recorded with the late great DJ Scott La Rock – and he was soon to fall prey to the very street violence that BDP documented with such raw brilliance by KRS-One. Importance aside, Criminal Minded is simply a great, timeless record that no true fan of gritty classic hip hop should be without. The track list alone is a full chapter in the hip hop book of legends – with tunes like "Poetry", "Elementary", "South Bronx", "Super-Hoe", "Bridge is Over", and the "P is Free" remix. Also includes "Criminal Minded", "Dope Beat", and "9mm Goes Bang". LP, Vinyl record album

Tommy Boy, 1989. Used 2CDs ... Just Sold Out!
The mindblowing classic debut of De La Soul! 3 Feet High And Rising is inarguably one of the most important records in hip hop history – with playful, endearingly oddball trio rhymes and Prince Paul production at it's most sprawlingly sampled and creative. It's got flat out classic songs that stand out well enough on their own, but it's also one of the greatest full length albums in hip hop history – featuring loosely connective skits with recurring characters that are vital to the experience. Last, but not least, 3 Feet. . .is especially fascinating given it's 1989 release year – a time when so many of the contemporaneous crews and solo MCs on both the east coast and west coast were going grittier, darker and more profane – but it doesn't feel like a conscious reaction to that, as much it feels like sharp trio and a brilliant producer carving out their own damn creative niche. Includes "Me, Myself & I", "The Magic Number", "Plug Tunin", "Say No Go", "Tread Water", "Eye Know", "Buddy" and much more! Expanded edition contains a second bonus CD packed with alternate versions and rare 12" single remixes! CD

Janelle MonaeDirty Computer ... CD
Bad Boy, 2018. New Copy ... $9.99 18.98
Janelle Monae knocks it out of the park here – sounding every bit as great as before, but also hitting this righteous mode that really takes the singer to incredible new territory! If you loved Janelle's previous records, don't worry – she's still as catchy and playful as ever – but there's also a depth and darkness that's inspired by recent political turns in America – which Monae also uses to address issues that go back much farther in her experience, woven together in songs that are maybe even more politically powerful because of the way that they'll also win over the mainstream! Stevie Wonder gets the very first thanks in the long notes at the end of the book – and the mix of soul and message here definitely hearkens back to Stevie in the 70s – is all Janelle's own. Heck, even guests like Zoe Kravitz, Brian Wilson, and Pharrell Williams can't get in the way – on titles that include "Screwed", "Django Jane", "I Got The Juice", "Stevie's Dream", "Don't Judge Me", "Crazy Classic Life", "Take A Byte", "Do Afraid", "Americans", "I Like That ", "Pynk", "Jane's Dream", and "Make Me Feel". Maybe not the first full length album by a female MC, but a really well-remembered set from the early days – and one that hardly tries to go for any crossover modes at all! Instead, Sparky-D really keeps it live and close to the streets – beginning the set with an acapella track that almost feels like a freestyle – then following with lots of strong production work from Spyder D – who again keeps things lean and nicely sharp – really providing the kind of beat-heavy burst that could make old school rhymes sound so powerful and urgent!
