✨✧ African Music MachineBlack Water Gold ... LP
Soul Power, 1972/1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99
Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! The band has a very unique sound that involves a lot of rolling bubbling basslines, spacey organ grooves, tight choppy guitar riffs, and punchy horn blasts – almost with the African elements promised in the title, but served up with a deeper funk sound all the way through! In a way, the group's a bit like Cymande or some of the other 70s hybrid ensembles – yet they've got a lot less dub, a much more direct funky groove, and plety of raw southern elements in the mix as well! This is the funky 45 material we first cut our teeth on back in the day – and the original singles are legendary! Includes massive cuts like "Black Water Gold (Pearl)", "A Girl In France", "Never Name A Baby (Before It's Born), "Making Nassau Fruit Drink", "Camel Time", "The Dapp", "Tropical", and "Mr. Brown". Wide Hive, 2018. Used ... $2.99
Compelling work from a variation on the Throttle Elevator Music combo – one who, like their predecessors, have a style that's often a bit more than conventional jazz – informed by the different strands of sounds that have come through the Wide Hive label that's been their home! The group features original songs and arrangements from Gregory Howe – who's definitely really opening himself up in recent years – and other group members include Matt Montgomery on piano and bass, and also songs and arrangements – plus Erik Jekabson on trumpet, Mike Ramos on guitar, and Mike Hughes on drums. Jekabson is as strong here as on his own albums as a leader – a rich voice who gives the album a sense of majesty at times, and a sense of direction at others – and titles include "Montecito Sunset", "Hum", "Time Is A Sphere", "Ergot", "Embarcadero Plaza", and "Ellipsis". Drums Music ShowSexy Banana EP ... LP
Mondo Groove (Italy), Early 80s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The title, artist, and cover name are all a bit enigmatic – but take it from us, the whole thing definitely lives up to its promise! The set brings together some obscure tunes from that great moment when Italian club music was hitting a very unique vibe – not really disco, even though it was strongly flying the flag of that style overseas – but also different than some of the more house-heavy cuts to come! Drums Music Show use plenty of percussion, but also mix it with a warmer style too – sometimes sweeping strings, sometimes other elements – usually with a female singer over the top. Their titles include both vocal and instrumental versions of "Sexy Banana" and "Samedi Soir" – and the set also features versions of "Samedi Soir" by Patricia & Top Secret, and by Olga Melchionda. New World MusicIntellectual Thinking/Across The Water (Edit)/Music For All People ... 12-inch
Numero, Mid 80s. New Copy (pic cover)... $18.99 24.98
Sweet electro soul from a Bay Area group who deliver way more than most of their contemporaries – music that's deep enough to maybe win the "intellectual" tag in the title! That cut leads off the EP – and is this laidback dreamy instrumental that runs for almost 9 minutes in length – with slow beats and a great piano part to offset the other electro elements! "Across The Water" has a bit of vocals – but really lets you get into the midtempo funky groove before any words come into place – and even then, they step aside when a voice shouts out "turn the bass up" – before a mighty nice solo! "Music For All People has a bright blend of beats and bass – with lots of jazzy elements on the guitar line too! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Paul Page & His Paradise MusicPacific Paradise ... CD
Subliminal Sounds (Sweden), 1940s/1950s. New Copy ... $9.99
A fantastic tribute to the enigmatic Paul Page – an exotic music genius from the west coast scene of the postwar years – but one who never reached the fame of bigger names like Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, or Webley Edwards! Page spent his later years in Hawaii, and right from the start his music always had a style that bridged the gap between the California coast and those islands – initially with some of the imagined style of the culture that you'd find in 30s American films, but increasingly with an individual approach that reflected the fresh changes of the jazz and exotic worlds as the 50s moved on. Instrumentation ranges from lead piano to solo guitar, steel, and other instrumentation – and a number of cuts have surprisingly strong vocals, in a very deep, mellow tone. The package is very well done – with a huge amount of notes from west coast historian Dominic Priore, plus an insane cornucopia of images that really open up Page's life and music – and his obscure releases on labels like Paradise and Astrology. Titles include "Mele Of Yesterdays Men", "Passport To Paradise", "It's All Wicky Wacky In Hawaii", "Nani Waimea", "Maui Chimes", "Chicken Kona Kaai", "Sweet Someone", "The Reef Is Calling", "Matey", "Pieces Of Eight", "Ports O Call", "My Fiji Island Queen", "China Nights", "When Sam Goes Back To Samoa", "Ala Wai Blues", "Leaves From My Grass House", and "Bali Hai". Island (UK), 1973. Very Good Gatefold ... $14.99
The incredible second album from Roxy Music – picking up right where the self titled album left off – ratcheting up the excitement even more thanks to Ferry's extra dramatic songs, Eno's unpredictable synthesizer and tape manipulations, and a driving approach to the performances by the rest of the group! The songs range from fairly straight forward fiery glam rock, to more complicated, evolving structural tension. We hear strains of this record in so many great rock albums that followed, from the punk era all the way up to post millenium indie rock – but as influential as it is, it's an amazing experience all its own! Roxy MusicManifesto ... CD
EG/Reprise, 1979. Used ... $4.99
A brilliant little comeback album for Roxy Music – their first album in 4 years after Siren, and a well-done departure that takes off from older records without losing any of their greatness! In a way, the set's almost the group's Lodger – a similar effort to Bowie's record from the same time that reflects a move away from heavier styles of earlier years, but never loses the edge of the group's best work. Manifesto also reflects some of the lessons learned by Bryan Ferry on his solo records – a bit leaner and cleaner presentation of the songs – but the album itself is also strongly a group production effort, and certainly feels that way in its use of Phil Manzenera's great guitars and Andy Mackay's horn arrangements. Titles include "Ain't That So", "Stronger Through The Years", "Trash", "Manifesto", "Angel Eyes", "Spin Me Round", "Cry Cry Cry", and "My Little Girl". CD

Roxy MusicRoxy Music (2CD expanded edition) ... CD
Capitol, 1972. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 21.98
A mindblowing debut from Roxy Music – a record that took the world by storm in the 70s, and which is still pretty darn revolutionary all these many years later! Sure, the cover looks a bit cheesy and trashy, but the core of the music is amazing – this blistering array of guitars, electronics, and saxophone – all honed into songs that provide the perfect setting for the haunting vocals of Bryan Ferry! If you only know these guys from their later, softer work, you'll be quite surprised here – as the saxes by Andy Mackay are woven right in alongside the guitar of Phil Manzanera, and the album's laced with weird electronic and tape touches from Brian Eno. Peter Sinfield produced – as yet another mighty talent that was part of the proceedings – and titles include "Re-make/Re-Model", "Ladytron", "If There Is Something", "HB", "The Bob", "Chance Meeting", "Would You Believe", "Sea Breezes", and "Bitters End". Amazing 2CD expanded edition comes in a book-like cover, with lots of pages of notes – and CD 2 features 14 more bonus tracks – Peel Sessions recordings of "Virginia Plain", "Sea Breezes", "Remake/Remodel", "The Bob", "Would You Believe", "2HB", "Ladytron", and "Chance Meeting" – plus a live BBC In Concert Performance from March 8, 1972 – with performances of five more tracks! Quite possibly the biggest early moment of US fame for Roxy Music – thanks to the classic "Love Is The Drug", which kicks off the album and is easily one of the group's best-known tunes of the 70s! The album tightens things up slightly from the sound of Country Life before – not as many dark corners, but still plenty of the offbeat styles that make these early Roxy Music albums so great – with none of the softer styles that took over during the early 80s years. Other tracks include "End Of The Line", "She Sells", "Could It Happen To Me", "Both Ends Burning", "Just Another High", and "Whirlwind". LP, Vinyl record album

Swedish leader Harry Arnold tackles the music of Richard Rodgers – taking the tunes into some sweet jazzy big band directions, without as many of the showy flourishes you might expect from the "Broadway" title! Of course, many of the tunes here are older Rodgers material – making them already familiar jazz standards even before Arnold gets his hands on them – but the approach here is nice and lively, with some of the soaring tou ches of Arnold's other work. ✨✧ Art Ensemble Of ChicagoDreaming Of The Masters Suite – Music Inspired By & Dedicated To John Coltrane ... CD
DIW (Japan), 1990. Used ... $18.99
Possibly the best entry in Art Ensemble Of Chicago's Dreaming Of The Masters series – as the set's devoted to the work of John Coltrane, and has a really unified feel throughout! About half the tunes are Coltrane compositions, and the rest are originals by the Art Ensemble – done with fluid, open sounds that are less a strict tribute to Coltrane, than an expression of the ideas in jazz he allowed! As you might guess, the reeds play strongly in the sound of the set – and both Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell hit some great moments on the Coltrane tunes especially – notes that are quite different than any Trane might have played, but which he would no doubt appreciate in his music. Titles include "Dreaming Of The Masters", "Impressions", "Spiritual", "Naima", "Song For Atala", and "Go Head". CD

Duck BakerSpinning Song – Duck Baker Plays The Music Of Herbie Nichols (180 gram red vinyl presing) ... LP
Avant/Triple Point, 1996. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Guitarist Duck Baker takes on the music of Herbie Nichols – the sometime-overlooked modernist of the postwar years, a player that some folks rank right up there with Thelonious Monk – later given his due with a run of revival projects like this! Nichols' music sounds very different here – less of the sharp percussive angles that a piano might create – and almost more warmly chromatic, through the acoustic guitar readings of the tunes by Baker – himself a very creative player, and really setting himself apart from some of his contemporaries with this project. The album's got equal appeal to both fans of Herbie's mid-century modernism, and the decades of creative acoustic guitar solo material that came before Baker's rise – work by John Fahey, Robbie Basho, and others. ✨✧ Gary BartzMusic Is My Sanctuary ... LP
Capitol, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic bit of jazz funk fusion – and one of the landmark 70s albums produced by Larry Mizell! This is Gary Bartz's second (and most amazing) collaboration with Larry Mizell – a studio genius who could focus on the best talent of a jazz artist, then expand it using additional keyboards, percussion, and often a sweet bank of chorus vocals to give the tracks an extra soulful sound! By the time of this album, Larry had already worked to great fame with Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, and Johnny Hammond – and the record has him turning his talents towards Gary Bartz to unlock a whole hidden side of soulful expression that would never be matched again! The title cut – "Music Is My Sanctuary" – is a jazz fusion classic in anyone's book, and it features characteristic Mizell keyboards alongside Gary's soulful sax, augmented by a deep vocal chorus that's simply fantastic. Other highlights include "Carnaval De L'Esprit" and "Macaroni" – and the whole album's nice! LP, Vinyl record album

Big Band KatowiceMusic For My Friends ... LP
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Funky big band from Poland – a very groovy set that's right up there with the best large group 70s sessions on MPS! The group here is very heavy on the horns – lots of trumpets and saxes – underscored by some hipper rhythms that include a bit of guitar, electric bass, and keyboards – never too much to make the record an electric one, but enough to push an older jazz mode into some groovier territory for the 70s! There's a tight stepping feel to the best numbers, and a soaring, spacious sensibility to the rest – almost a soundtrack sort of approach, given the deep colors and tones in the set. The album features a great funky remake of "Madrox", with a nice cop show break at the start, plus the funky numbers "Hey Man", "Sorcery", and "Music For My Friends". LP, Vinyl record album

BlackbyrdsHappy Music – The Best Of The Blackbyrds ... CD
Fantasy, 1970s. Used ... $4.99
Sublime funk by one of the greatest combos of the 70s – the mighty mighty Blackbyrds, a group who first came to prominence under the guidance of Donald Byrd, but quickly showed they had plenty to offer on their own! Back in the day, the sound of The Blackbyrds was really the sound of Fantasy Records – a newly sophisticated approach to jazz funk, helped out by Byrd and the Mizell Brothers – and fused into a groove that was hip, tight, but never too slick or smooth. The balance of instrumentation here is really amazing – sharp-edged playing like the best indie funk, but brought up to a level of perfection in the studio to match the advances going on at CTI, Kudu, or Blue Note. The collection does a great job of mixing the group's classics with some under-appreciated album gems – and it also features the previously unreleased tune "Feel Like A Kid" – alongside other numbers that include "Rock Creek Park", "Unfinished Business", "Do It Fluid", "One Eye Two Step", "Supernatural Feeling", "Walking In Rhythm", "Mysterious Vibes", "Enter In", "Gut Level", "Reggins", "Blackbyrds Theme", and "Hot Day Today". Ursula Block, Michael Glasmeier & OthersBroken Music – Artists' Recordworks (paperback – with bonus flexidisc) ... Book
Primary Information, 2018. New Copy ... $24.99 34.00
One of the coolest discographies you'll ever see in your life – a special book devoted to ultra-rare records created by artists as well as musicians – first published in 1989, and filled with a wealth of obscure records from the 50s through the 80s! Musical styles run from avant jazz to punk, 20th century classical, electronic music, and many other modes that defy easy definition – and the records include very limited vinyl pressed up for a show or an exhibition, to more widely-circulated material that's still pretty darn far left of center! The book also includes essays by Theodor Adorno, Rene Block, Jean Dubuffet, Laszlo Moholy Nagy, and others – and the discography is 200 pages, with listings for records by dozens of artists – including Max Ernst, Peter Gordon, Karel Appel, Hugo Ball, Andy Warhol, Yoshi Wada, Gerhard Richter, Yoko Ono, Hermann Nitsch, Albert Oehlen, Sol Lewitt, Laurie Anderson, John Cage, Conrad Schnitzler, Michael Snow, and many many others. The book is a hefty 279 pages, softcover, with black and white images throughout – and also includes a flexidisc of the Arditti String Quartet playing "Broken Music" by Milan Knizak. Book
(Limited edition – and comes with a bonus flexidisc!)

Boneshaker (Mars Williams/Paal Nilssen-Love/Kent Kessler)Fake Music ... CD
Soul What, 2019. New Copy ... $12.99
A trio that really lives up to its name – given that the lineup features three of the most dynamic figures in free jazz over the past few decades! The set was recorded in Chicago, and has a sound that really lives up to that city's embrace of a power trio like this – with completely frenetic work on reeds by Mars Williams, next to tumultuous drums from Paal Nilssen-Love, and some boldly propulsive bass from Kent Kessler – all spun out here over the course of three very long, freely-improvised tracks! Williams plays a few toy instruments, and Nilssen-Love handles some percussion too – both of which make for some slightly more introspective passages, which are soon balanced by more dynamic energy. Titles include "Miakoda", "Lovin The Buzz", and "Echo Clang". CD

✨✧ Cyrus BozorgmehrOnce Upon A Time In Shaolin – The Untold Story Of Wu Tang Clan's Million Dollar Secret Album, The Devaluation Of Music, & America's New Public Enemy No 1 (hardcover) ... Book
Flatiron Books, 2017. New Copy ... $4.99 26.99
The amazing story of the Wu-Tang's one-copy, million dollar album – a record that may be one of the greatest hoaxes in modern music, or a true marriage of hip hop and the art world! The record is hardly canonical material from the group, but it does represent a fascinating 21st Century evolution of that sense of image and marketing that always made their many projects of the 90s so revolutionary – and, like those, it also represents the work of a hip hop act to control game – instead of get bamboozled by it. The book tells the tale of the unique record and everything behind it – penned by an adviser on the project, who provides a huge amount of backstory and details that never made it to the press at the time. The story is maybe a bit self-congratulatory, and has maybe a bit too much "industry" at times – but given the content, that's also to be expected. 272 pages, hardcover. Book

Charles BrackeenRhythm X – The Music Of Charles Brackeen (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Strata East/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.99
The only album ever cut as a leader by tenor saxophonist Charles Brackeen during his early years – and a real standout in the catalog of the legendary Strata East label! The set's got an unusual history – in that it's part of the Dolphy Series, recorded before the label started by Clifford Jordan – as a way of giving a strong showcase to so many new ideas that were bursting in jazz during the late 60s! Here, Brackeen's tenor is set up with a trio of musicians most familiarly associated with Ornette Coleman – Don Cherry on trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums – a unit that's completely on fire, and freer than before – yet each graced with such strong individuality, every aspect of the record is a complete delight. Brackeen is amazing (why the hell didn't he record more like this at the time?) – but the bass, trumpet, and drums are all very distinct too – the perfect power of free improvisation when it's done right. Titles include "Rhythm X", "Hour Glass", "CB Blues", and "Charles Concept". LP, Vinyl record album

Dave Burrell & Bob StewartCrave Play The Music Of Jelly Roll Morton & Dave Burrell ... LP
No Business (Lithuania), 1994. New Copy ... $22.99
A really unusual, completely wonderful album from pianist Dave Burrell – a live performance done around the same time as a studio session of the music of Jelly Roll Morton – but with a very different vibe! The difference here is Bob Stewart – who plays tuba with a deftness that's breathtaking – sometimes using the instrument in the same bass rhythm mode that it had in early days of jazz, before the string bass came into play – other times working out a bolder solo voice that's completely mesmerizing – even more so than some of Stewart's important avant jazz recordings in the 80s. The pair are wonderful on the three Jelly Roll Morton titles on the set – "New Orleans Blues", "The Crave", and "Spanish Swat" – all nice and long – then hit a greater sense of variety of the Burrell compositions "Popolo Paniolo", "Pua Mae Ole", and "I Am His Brother". The fantastic first full album from The Buzzcocks – a group who'd already set the UK scene on fire with a flurry of amazing singles at the start of the punk generation! Here, they amazingly keep up all the great energy of their 7" releases – moving at a blistering pace throughout, with more focus than the Sex Pistols in their instrumentation, and a mixture of drum, bass, and guitar interplay that virtually became the blueprint for the whole west coast hardcore scene to come! Pete Shelly has never sounded so sinister, and the mighty Martin Rushnet puts the whole thing together with beautifully lean production – on classics that include "Fast Cars", "No Reply" "Get On Our Own", "I Don't Mind", "Autonomy", "Love Battery", "I Need", "Moving Away From The Pulsebeat", and "Fictionromance". Luaka Bop, Mid 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 28.98
An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. John CorbettPick Up The Pieces – Excursions In 70s Music (hardcover) ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2019. New Copy ... $22.99 30.00
Writer John Corbett has given us words on a huge variety of musical styles over the years – a fair bit of them left field and avant – but this time around, he's tackling the full range of 70s rock, pop, and soul music – in a huge book that's unlike anything he's ever written before! First off, the large volume is very personal – part listening autobiography, part paean to the musical giants who shaped the decade, and part hindsight record review of all the amazing sounds that were created during the 70s! The book follows the decade with year-by-year chapters – yet it's hardly a history at all – as Corbett picks key songs and albums as touchstones for each year – partly because of their impact, but more because of the power they had for him as a listener. The albums run the gamut – from Nursery Cryme by Genesis, to Les Stances A Sophie by The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, to Pink Moon by Nick Drake – and songs include "Sex Machine" by James Brown, "School's Out" by Alice Cooper, and "Long Time" by Boston. 496 pages, hardcover. Chick's piano seems to lead off most tunes – clearly directing the group's energies, but both Vitous and Haynes make their presence known strongly once the set gets going. A wonderfully-written autobiography from Elvis Costello – a book that's not only completely illuminating for any fan of his music, but which stands quite strongly on his own, even if you're not a longtime fan of the man himself! The volume almost sets a new standard for musician autobiographies – as Costello approaches the project with the sort of zeal he's brought to his new "second role" in popular culture over the past few decades – that of being as much of a raconteur as a singer, as much as a spotlight on other genius as he is a genius himself – always handled with the sense of pointed prose and honesty you'd find in his music. The book is huge – and filled with black and white photos too. A heavy 672 pages, and hardcover. Book

A seminal set from Country Joe & The Fish – one of those albums that brought the new psychedelic sound strongly into the mainstream – but all without softening up or commercializing it at all! There's still a very sharp edge to the record – mean organ lines, fuzzy guitar, and lots of cool production that makes the sounds weirder and more watery than before – even the vocals, which have this edge that nobody would ever refer to as Sunshine Pop! In a way, the whole set's as sinister as any of the most groundbreaking albums on Elektra from the time – and definitely shows that both Vanguard and the group were at the forefront of the new psych recording scene. ✨✧ Eddie DrennonWould You Dance To My Music ... LP
Casablanca, 1977. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Eddie was one of the kings of the Latin Hustle – taking the elements of the burgeoning New York salsa scene, and linking them up with the growing dancefloor trends at the end of the 70s. The result is a nice batch of jazzy groovers that have a lot more musical depth than some of the other titles on the Casablanca label at the time – and which occasionally show Eddie's roots in funkier styles. The best example of this is "Come Dance With Me", which starts with a good drumbreak, then rolls into a string-laden groove that's punctuated with some good basslines. Other nice cuts include "That's Just Too Bad", "Save Your Love For Me", "Someday, Someway", and "Never Let Me Go", which also has a bit of a break on the intro. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some wear and a cut corner.)

DriftersI'll Take You Where The Music's Playing ... LP
Atlantic, 1965. Very Good+ ... $11.99
The Drifters' last full album for Atlantic Records – and a rock-solid set that may well be one of their best for the label in the 60s! The album's heavy on those lightly loping tunes that the group virtually invented a few years before – that slightly-sweetened approach to soul that became known as the uptown sound and which still had The Drifters as one of its key proponents at the time of this set. Production is by the great Bert Berns, who really knows how to balance all elements perfectly – and many of the lead vocals are by Johnny Moore, whose crackling vocals bring in a nice sense of feeling, even when the tunes are pretty darn catchy. But possibly the best thing about the record is the songs – as they're mostly pretty fresh tracks that move past some of the overplayed Drifters hits – but which still resonate with similar themes about live and life in the big city. Titles include "I'll Take You Where The Music's Playing", "I've Got Sand In My Shoes", "At The Club", "He's Just A Playboy", "Follow Me", "Far From The Maddening Crowd", and "Come On Over To My Place". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red & purple label pressing. Cover is still in the shrinkwrap.)
