Johnny Almond Music MachineHollywood Blues ... LP
Deram, 1970. Very Good+ ... $19.99
An excellent album of funky jazz – arranged and conducted by British organ and sax player Johnny Arnold – but also featuring some incredible work from an assortment of west coast soul jazz players that include Charles Kynard, Curtis Amy, Hadley Caliman, and Vi Redd! As the title kind of implies, the groove's in a swinging soundtrack sort of mode – almost a Lalo Schifrin 60s style, and one that blends together the organ lines with some totally sweet work on vibes, flute, and tenor sax. There's a wonderful Verve-like feel going down here – although in some way, the album's even hipper than anything on Verve from the time! Titles include "Agadir Sunset", "It's The Water", "Hot Rod", "Slipping Easy", and "Funkville U.S.A.". LP, Vinyl record album

Bonniwell Music MachineBonniwell Music Machine (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner/Real Gone, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... On March 6, 2020
An amazing second chapter for The Music Machine – working here with the last name of leader Sean Bonniwell in their name – in a groove that's even weirder and wilder than before! The group take on an odd new sound here – still the heady brew of fuzz and Hammond on their original garagey recordings from LA – but with a mode that also really lets Bonniwell's offbeat character come to the forefront – both in the odd lyrics, and his stark presentation in the lead – a Sunset Strip sense of personality that's almost up there with Kim Fowley at times! The record's definitely one of the weirder, more edgey sides cut for Warner Brothers in the mid 60s – and titles include "Astrologically Incompatible", "Double Yellow Line", "The Trap", "Soul Love", "Bottom Of The Soul", "Me Myself & I", and "The Eagle Never Hunts The Fly". Tiger Bay (UK), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99
A really great UK group from that magical time when a few key combos were effortlessly blending together jazz, rock, and some more experimental modes – coming up with a really special sound that makes a record like this an overlooked classic that maybe sounds better today than it did when it was released! The group clearly have jazz chops, but also play heavy guitars with some bluesy influences – yet with a sense of chromatic changes that really keeps things interesting without ever losing their focus. The lovely Larraine sings on a few tracks, sometimes wordlessly – and titles include "Henry", "Open Spaces", "Mystical Sounds", "Clown", "Slow & Lonesome Blues", and a version of the Pharoah Sanders tune "Japan". Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleEntourage ... CD
Folkways, 1973. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Beautiful sounds from the Entourage ensemble – a record that's got a really meditative blend of acoustic elements with a few electric touches – used in ways that start in jazz, then move way beyond! Instrumentation includes guitar, flute, keyboards, violin, and mbira – coming together with really unusual inflections that are partly borrowed from Eastern sources – like Noh theater, or Balinese music – but which unfurl with a more freewheeling, American underground vibe as well! No sounds are ever too sharp, and there's almost a hint of the instrumental experiments in the 80s underground – such as work by Penguin Cafe Orchestra or Soft Verdict – but with an earthier feel overall. Titles include "Jattle Boxes", "Giraffes", "Solo For Electric Viola", "Michael's Song", "Silver Drum", and "Percussion Dance". CD

Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleNeptune Collection ... CD
Folkways, 1976. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Warmly experimental music from the 70s Folkways scene – music that's a mixture of jazz, folk, electronics, and improvised styles – played with an open, honest sort of feel! The Entourage Music & Theater Ensemble features four composer/musicians – Joe Clark, Wall Matthews, Rusti Clark, and Michael Smith – all individuals with a nicely subdued sensibility, despite the "theater" in the group's name. The work here is hardly performative – at least not in an aggressive sense – and instead is a beautiful matrix of sounds from instruments that include keyboards, acoustic guitar, soprano sax, viola, gong, and percussion – all used lightly, with an approach that's almost a folksier take on early 70s spiritual jazz – especially given the way the acoustic guitar is used. Titles include "Nature Spirits", "Incantation For The Death Of Self", "Space Needle Suicide", "Tar Box Poltergeist", and "Druid Dance". CD

✨✧ Charlie Haden & The Liberation Music OrchestraNot In Our Name ... CD
Verve, 2005. Used ... $7.99
Our favorite side of Charlie Haden – one that we love from classic recordings on Impulse and ECM – and heard for the first time in years on this new album of gentle protestations against the current state of the US! The album features wonderfully evocative arrangements from Carla Bley – who also plays piano on the sessions, and co-leads the group of younger players with Haden. Tunes are a tapestry of themes designed to offer a different vision of America than the one that's currently getting dragged through the mud in a host of foreign relations disasters and poorly-planned military outings – and Haden and Bley draw from a surprising range of sources for the material in the set. Titles include Haden's "Not In Our Name", Bley's "Blue Anthem", Pat Metheney's "This Is Not America", Ornette Coleman's "Skies Of America", and versions of "Amazing Grace", "Adagio", "Lift Every Voice & Sing", "America The Beautiful", and "Goin Home". A lost chapter in the all too short history of Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra – an album recorded shortly after the group's better-known album for ECM in the 80s! Like other Liberation Music outings, Carla Bley is a very strong presence on this set – penning original tunes for the album, handling arrangements, and sharing Charlie Haden's love of rhythms and inspirations from Latin and African sources – inspirations that are brought in subtly, and shaped to fit the overall spirit of the group. Players include Tom Harrell, Ken McIntyre, Joe Lovano, Dewey Redman, and Ray Anderson – and titles include "Dream Keeper", "Rabo De Nube", "Nkosi Sikelel'I Afrika", and "Sandino". CD

Bala Miller's got a great pan-African group here – one that's more from the western side of the scene, despite the pyramids mentioned in their name – with players hailing from Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon – all coming together in a mighty righteous style! The music is fairly cerebral – thoughtful tunes that have a layered blend of horns, guitar, keyboards, and sweetly-stepping rhythms – plus occasional organ, kora, goga, and kwarya – all given a stronger focus from the vocals in the lead, which shift between male and female singers, and some backup as well. Incus/Honest Jons (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99
Incredible work from a group that forever changed the face of British jazz – and which really found a way for improvised music to exist in a space that's all its own! The "company" is really a quartet – with Derek Bailey on guitar, Evan Parker on soprano sax, Hugh Davies on organ and electronics, and Jamie Muir on percussion – working in a way that's definitely got plenty of free jazz elements, but which also occasionally resonates with experiments in electro-acoustic sound from the 60s – yet at a level that's much warmer and personal, which is the sensibility that important improvisers like this can really bring to the music! Parker also plays a bit of amplified auto harp, which is great – and titles include "In The Victim's Absence", "Pointing", "Bedrest", "Untitled 3", "Untitled 4", and "Its Tongue Trapped To The Rock By A Limpet The Water Rat Succumbed To The Incoming Tide". Roxy MusicManifesto ... CD
EG/Reprise, 1979. Used ... $4.99
A brilliant little comeback album for Roxy Music – their first album in 4 years after Siren, and a well-done departure that takes off from older records without losing any of their greatness! In a way, the set's almost the group's Lodger – a similar effort to Bowie's record from the same time that reflects a move away from heavier styles of earlier years, but never loses the edge of the group's best work. Manifesto also reflects some of the lessons learned by Bryan Ferry on his solo records – a bit leaner and cleaner presentation of the songs – but the album itself is also strongly a group production effort, and certainly feels that way in its use of Phil Manzenera's great guitars and Andy Mackay's horn arrangements. Titles include "Ain't That So", "Stronger Through The Years", "Trash", "Manifesto", "Angel Eyes", "Spin Me Round", "Cry Cry Cry", and "My Little Girl". CD

Strata East/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1972. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $44.99 50.99
A searing live set from trumpeter Charles Tolliver – one of the few talents who could take his instrument into the kind of long-blown, beautifully open territory explored on a double length album like this! Tolliver maybe inherits a late Lee Morgan quality, but also opens up with the Woody Shaw generation – but at a level that's even more exploratory than Woody, and which follows up the fantastic sounds of his two part Live At Slugs albums, issued slightly earlier on the Strata East label! Strata is a name that's come to be synonymous with the best in spiritual jazz of the 70s – and Tolliver is the key figure at the top of that legacy – really making magic here in a quartet that includes John Hicks on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Alvin Queen on drums. Titles are all nice and long – and include "Grand Max", "Truth", "Prayer For Peace", "Our Second Father" and "Repetition". LP, Vinyl record album

Folkways, 1978. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.99
Moody electronics from maestro Jon Appleton – a spare set that's quite a bit different from some of his early 70s tape experiments for Flying Dutchman! This Folkways album has Appleton doing some wonderfully weird work on the keys – mostly a synclavier, but also some other early digital systems too – but used in these really textural ways that still sound a lot like early analogue electronics! The tunes have an almost poetic feel – usually building slowly, with an Eno-like approach to sound – and titles include "Mussems Sang", "Zoetrope", "Syntrophia", and "In Deserto". CD

Mindblowing music from the mighty Jon Appleton – a cool combination of tape effects, electronics, and studio wizardry – every bit as wonderful as his Syntonic Menagerie album for Flying Dutchman! The sound here is quite similar – a playful pastiche of odd sounds, tones, and other elements – fitted together with a lot more imagination than some of Jon's contemporaries – never too stuffy or academic, and almost with a sensibility that predicts remix work in the decade to come. Two tracks on the set – "Chef D'Oeuvre" and "Times Square Times Ten" – were on the Flying Dutchman album, but all the others appear to be unique – and titles include "Hommage To Orpheus", "Ofa Atu Tonga", "Nevsehir", "Apolliana", "Sones De San Blas", and "CCCP". Swedish leader Harry Arnold tackles the music of Richard Rodgers – taking the tunes into some sweet jazzy big band directions, without as many of the showy flourishes you might expect from the "Broadway" title! Of course, many of the tunes here are older Rodgers material – making them already familiar jazz standards even before Arnold gets his hands on them – but the approach here is nice and lively, with some of the soaring tou ches of Arnold's other work. ✨✧ Albert AylerMusic Is The Healing Force Of The Universe ... CD
Impulse, 1970. Used ... $11.99
One of the last records made by avant sax legend Albert Ayler – a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

A fantastic bit of jazz funk fusion – and one of the landmark 70s albums produced by Larry Mizell! This is Gary Bartz's second (and most amazing) collaboration with Larry Mizell – a studio genius who could focus on the best talent of a jazz artist, then expand it using additional keyboards, percussion, and often a sweet bank of chorus vocals to give the tracks an extra soulful sound! By the time of this album, Larry had already worked to great fame with Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, and Johnny Hammond – and the record has him turning his talents towards Gary Bartz to unlock a whole hidden side of soulful expression that would never be matched again! The title cut – "Music Is My Sanctuary" – is a jazz fusion classic in anyone's book, and it features characteristic Mizell keyboards alongside Gary's soulful sax, augmented by a deep vocal chorus that's simply fantastic. Other highlights include "Carnaval De L'Esprit" and "Macaroni" – and the whole album's nice! LP, Vinyl record album

One of the most electronic albums that Beaver & Krause ever recorded – a set that was issued as a Guide To Electronic Music, but which has a way more to offer than just a simple demonstration record! Unlike most other B&K albums, which can feature a bit of rock mixing in with the moog, this one is almost entirely analogue electronics – often played in a stark, spare way that has plenty of spooky tones – but also works beautifully together in a mode that's similar to other experimental electronic sets from the time, such as Morton Subotnick's contemporaneous records for Nonesuch. The tracks are very short, with concentrated bursts of sound, and have titles like "White Sound", "Ribbon Controller", and "Sawtooth". There's hardly any vocals at all on the songs – other than muted, abstracted lyrics that are buried under brooding basslines, echoey drums, and fuzzy work on guitar and keyboards – all with a moody Factory Records sort of vibe – and by that, we mean Factory circa 1980, not the later sunnier years. There's a tight stepping feel to the best numbers, and a soaring, spacious sensibility to the rest – almost a soundtrack sort of approach, given the deep colors and tones in the set. The album features a great funky remake of "Madrox", with a nice cop show break at the start, plus the funky numbers "Hey Man", "Sorcery", and "Music For My Friends". LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby Bradford with John Stevens & The SpontaneousBobby Bradford With John Stevens & The Spontaneous Music Ensemble – Vol 1 ... LP
Nessa, 1971/1980. Near Mint- ... $24.99
An unlikely, but amazing meeting of the avant jazz minds – a classic set that has LA trumpeter Bobby Bradford coming into play with the UK Spontaneous Music Ensemble, led by drummer John Stevens! The material was recorded, almost spontaneously, on a holiday trip Bradford made to London in 1971 – but the record's become an enduring classic, thanks to the creative energy of the players involved, and the dynamic quality of the improvisations in the studio! Bradford's trumpet sounds quite different here than in his better-known work of the time with reedman John Carter – much more outside and forceful, really set loose in the company of Stevens' group – which, in this incarnation, includes Trevor Watts on alto and soprano sax, Bob Norden on trombone, Ron Herman on bass, and Julie Tippetts on guitar and a bit of voice. Titles include "His Majesty Louis", "Bridget's Mother", and "Room 408". LP, Vinyl record album

Brecker BrothersDon't Stop The Music ... LP
Arista, 1977. Sealed ... $6.99
A stone classic from The Brecker Brothers – working here at a new level for 70s jazz fusion! Sure, it's as slick as it can be – with touches of club and disco grooves to give an even smoother edge to the jazz funk of the Brecker Brothers – but thanks to some solid soloing that's not afraid to go for the easy spots, the album's a lot more solid than an number of sound-a-like copycat LPs to come out at the time! There's more than enough interesting jazz funk numbers on here to keep you happy if you dig a soulful fusion groove, and with Steve Gadd and Lenny White on drums, the beats are heavy enough in the right places. Titles include "Tabula Rasa", "Finger Lickin Good", "Funky Sea, Funky Dew", "Squids", "Petals", and "As Long As I've Got Your Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Modern music from Belize, circa 1988 – as the set brings together a host of homegrown recordings from Bro David – done in a style he refers to as cungo music! There's definitely some Caribbean touches in the grooves, but the music is also heavy on instrumentation and production modes from mainstream soul of the period – a nice criss-crossing that reminds us of some of the Caribe-influenced tracks that were getting play on the New York underground of the period, although maybe with a vibe that's a bit leaner and more personal overall. Many tracks have drum machine rhythms, but augmented with lots of other instrumentation to warm things up – and titles include "Dangriga", "Feel Free", "Cungo", "Sunshine", "Dancin", Experience", and "Belize". A wonderful meeting of jazz and poetry – as the Peter Brotzmann Tentet pays tribute to the work of Kenneth Patchen – mixing readings of Patchen's material with backings from the larger group! Section one of the CD features the Brotzmann group improvising under direction from the "lightbox" of Fred Lonberg-Holm, who is also in the group on cello – and then section two features more pronounced readings of Patchen's poetry, done by Mike Pearson in a style that really recalls Patchen's own voice on record. Players include Brotzmann, Mats Gustafsson, and Ken Vandermark on a variety of saxes and reeds – plus Joe McPhee on trumpet and alto, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Kent Kessler on bass, and Michael Zerang on drums. Sebastian CabotSebastian Cabot, Actor/Bob Dylan, Poet – A Dramatic Reading With Music ... LP
MGM, 1967. Sealed ... $16.99
One of the strangest albums to come out of the late 60s spoken word record boom – a collection of Bob Dylan tunes, read with a heavy English accent by actor Sebastian Cabot! Cabot's probably best known for his roles in the shows Checkmate and Family Affair – and he uses that familiar growly voice to great effect here on Dylan's tunes – spitting them out with a slightly bitter quality that's a fair bit different than Bob's original versions, but still very much in the same spirit! The backings are relatively spare – bits of strings, guitar, and other instrumentation – all handled by Irving Spice – and tunes include "It Ain't Me Babe", "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right", "Like A Rolling Stone", and "Blowin In The Wind". One of the best examples of "establishment hip" we can think of – and it's records like this that took more steam out of the left than Barry Goldwater ever did! LP, Vinyl record album

Great early work from one of the hippest bassists of his generation! Paul Chambers cut this obscure little album in LA, featuring a "jazz delegation from the east" that included Philly Joe Jones on drums and John Coltrane on tenor – plus pianist Kenny Drew, who had already been working on the west coast – all in a style that's much more relaxed and stretched-out than most other jazz recorded in LA at the time! The album is one of the earliest small group sessions with Coltrane, and it's a very spare batch of tracks that lead off with Chambers' amazing work on bass – but which also feature some incredible early work from Trane – very raw and loud in the mix, with a lot more bluesiness than you'd expect – and we mean that in a good way! Titles include "Dexterity", "Visitation", "John Paul Jones", and "Eastbound". Plus, the CD also seems to include a few bonus titles from an additional 1956 session with Coltrane! CD

Brilliant work throughout – both of Ray Charles' classic country albums on a single CD package! Volume one is the stuff of legends – and what seemed a silly idea at the time was true proof of Ray's genius – the most successful album of his career and a bona-fide number one hit that rode the charts for years and years! Ray's voice works perfectly with the material, and thanks to soulful arrangements by Gil Fuller, Marty Paich, and Gerald Wilson, the whole thing comes off to perfection. Titles include "You Don't Know Me", "I Can't Stop Lovin You", "Careless Love", "You Win Again", and "Worried Mind". Volume 2 is the second installment of one of Ray's greatest albums – and a landmark in the genre of country soul! As the title implies, Ray's singing a host of tunes best known from the country side of the spectrum – but he's working here with arrangements by LA jazzers Marty Paich and Gerald Wilson, to completely re-cast the tunes into the "modern sounds" mode promised in the title. The result is wonderful – a style that gave Ray's career a whole new boost, and a genre that was a perfect foil for his rich bluesy mode of singing. Titles include "No Letter Today", "Take These Chains From My Heart", "Teardrops In My Heart", "Making Believe", and "Hang Your Head In Shame". CD

Aaron CohenMove On Up – Chicago Soul Music & Black Cultural Power ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2019. New Copy ... $16.99 20.00
A tremendous achievement from music writer Aaron Cohen – a book that finally gets at the deeper, richer story of Chicago soul – the spirit of empowerment and pride that have always made us so honored to be part of the Windy City legacy! Cohen picks up where other soul writers have left off on Chicago – really looking at the shifts into the 70s, which included greater ties to the means of production, and an increased role in the social agenda as well – all part of an evolution in songwriting styles, production techniques, and the growing power of the full length album over the 7" single! Cohen looks at many key figures of the time – Earth Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan & Rufus, Curtis Mayfield, Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble – and the very well-researched book is a delight to read throughout – easily the deepest work that Cohen's ever given us. 234 pages, softcover, with some black and white images – and a selected discography too. ✨✧ Ornette ColemanMusic Of Ornette Coleman – Forms & Sounds/Skies Of America ... CD
Sony/BGO (UK), 1967/1972. New Copy 2CDs ... $8.99 16.99
A great couple of harder-to-find Ornette Coleman records – nicely paired up in a 2CD set! First up is The Music Of Ornette Coleman, from 1967 – which is beautiful record that serves as both a showcase for Ornette's "serious" writing efforts – and his ability to play with a larger ensemble! It kicks off with Ornette playing trumpet solos with The Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet as they perform his "Forms & Sounds" live. That's followed by recordings of Ornette's "Space Flight" and "Saints & Soldiers" performed by The Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia Quartet, a string ensemble that brings a new light to Ornette's compositions! Skies Of America is an ambitious record with full orchestra, in a haunting sound that's light years from any of his smaller group recordings of the 60s and 70s! There's an incredible feel to the strings used here – played by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Measham – all tied up and dark, with swirling sounds that run up beautifully from the bottom, then take off to the skies promised in the title – opening the door for Ornette to come in and solo freely over the top – in a magical mix that easily makes the record a standout in his long and mighty career! Harmolodic theory is definitely a part of Coleman's conception here – but in very different ways than his quartet or quintet recordings. Lots of tracks on this one, including "Skies Of America", "The Men Who Live In The White House", "Sunday In America", "Dreams", "Native Americans", "Silver Screen", "The Artist In America" and more. Luaka Bop, Mid 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 28.98
An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. Titles include "Er Ra", "Om Shanti", "Om Rama", "Rama Guru", "Haria Naryan", "Krishna Japaye", "Rama Katha", "Keshava Murahara", and "Journey To Satchindananda". LP, Vinyl record album

John CorbettPick Up The Pieces – Excursions In 70s Music (hardcover) ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2019. New Copy ... $22.99 30.00
Writer John Corbett has given us words on a huge variety of musical styles over the years – a fair bit of them left field and avant – but this time around, he's tackling the full range of 70s rock, pop, and soul music – in a huge book that's unlike anything he's ever written before! First off, the large volume is very personal – part listening autobiography, part paean to the musical giants who shaped the decade, and part hindsight record review of all the amazing sounds that were created during the 70s! The book follows the decade with year-by-year chapters – yet it's hardly a history at all – as Corbett picks key songs and albums as touchstones for each year – partly because of their impact, but more because of the power they had for him as a listener. The albums run the gamut – from Nursery Cryme by Genesis, to Les Stances A Sophie by The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, to Pink Moon by Nick Drake – and songs include "Sex Machine" by James Brown, "School's Out" by Alice Cooper, and "Long Time" by Boston. 496 pages, hardcover. A wonderfully-written autobiography from Elvis Costello – a book that's not only completely illuminating for any fan of his music, but which stands quite strongly on his own, even if you're not a longtime fan of the man himself! The volume almost sets a new standard for musician autobiographies – as Costello approaches the project with the sort of zeal he's brought to his new "second role" in popular culture over the past few decades – that of being as much of a raconteur as a singer, as much as a spotlight on other genius as he is a genius himself – always handled with the sense of pointed prose and honesty you'd find in his music. The book is huge – and filled with black and white photos too. A heavy 672 pages, and hardcover. Book
