VariousTrip To The Moon – 13 Super Groovy Soul, Rhythm N Blues, & Funk Songs About the Moon ... CD
Tramp (Germany), 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $14.99
Turns out, folks were going to the moon long before Neil Armstrong took his giant step for mankind – spinning out into space with rare singles like these – all great moon-themed numbers that rocket into space with solid fuel of their own! The set's got this fantastic mix of styles – deep soul, heavy funk, raw garage rock, and stomping R&B – plus a few other numbers that almost defy description, but which share plenty with the rest in terms of their space-age themes and cool approach to instrumentation and production! There's plenty of playful moments throughout – and the whole thing is a groovy collection of tracks that we mostly wouldn't have heard otherwise. Titles include "Walking On The Moon" by Rev Jamel & Bob Johnson, "Sputnik" by Sidney Owens & North South Connection, "Moon Man Is Back" by La La Wilson, "Crazy Stockings On The Moon" by The Swinging Astronauts, "Moon Child" by Ernest & DL Rocco, "Mars In 75 (part 1)" by Sunny Man Kado, "Mondgesicht" by Orchester Ambros Seelos, "Moon Child" by Scott Cunningham Band, and "Voyage To The Moon" by Black Fox. Now Again/Stones Throw, 2013. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
If this is reality, lead us onward – as the set is a mindblowing batch of trippy psych-funk from The Heliocentrics – even more offbeat and experimental than before, in ways that make the combo the true heirs to the legacy first begun by Stark Reality! The album's definitely funky at the core, but it's also filled with loads of amazing sounds – instruments tuned weirdly, played weirdly, and produced weirdly – so that over the heavy drums, there's often lots of freaky, fuzzy bits and tripped-out sounds – in ways that make the record feel like some lost acid trip outtakes from the Westbound studios of the early 70s – or like some obscure funk band that dropped acid at Andy Warhol's loft! The packaging offers up a visual example of what your ears will be going through when you tune into the music – and titles include "Mysterious Ways", "Collateral Damage", "Black Sky", "Calabash", "Path Of The Black Sun", "Mr Owusu I Presume", "Eastern Begena", and loads of cool interlude tracks too. Atlantic, 1965. Very Good ... $11.99
Pianist Walter Chiles and bassist Clarend Pettiford were 2 parts ofa smokin' little combo that grooved in the sort of jazz/pop style shared by similar groups like Young Holt Unlimited. Most of the tracks have some vocals, but they're sung in kind of a groovy loungey way, as the trio grooves along in the background. Titles include "The Joker", "Love", "All Gone Over You", and "The Longest Walk". Kind of a mix of soul, jazz, and loungey grooves. LP, Vinyl record album

Art Farmer/Benny GolsonMeet The Jazztet ... LP
Argo, 1960. Very Good- ... $7.99
Landmark work by one of the greatest jazz outfits of the early 60s! Art Farmer and Benny Golson were both known as well-composed players during the 50s – strongly soulful, but often with a fine sense of arrangement that usually tended towards the lyrical side of things. With this group, though, they turned that approach towards a heavier sounding style of jazz – tightly stepping soul jazz, in the manner that was being explored at the time by Cannonball Adderley, Art Blakey, and others – presented by Farmer and Golson with a bit more groove and a wonderful kick at the bottom! This album's the first the group cut together – and apart from trumpet by Farmer and tenor by Golson, it also features Curtis Fuller on trombone, McCoy Tyner on piano, Addison Farmer (brother of Art) on bass, and Lex Humphries on drums. Includes the massive original recording of "Killer Joe", which went onto become one of the most recorded jazz standards ever, plus the tracks "Blues March", "Mox Nix", "Park Avenue Petite", and "I Remember Clifford". Perfect tone, perfect groove, and a perfect sound all the way through! LP, Vinyl record album
(Grey label Argo pressing with deep groove. Cover has some heavy wear on the spine and bottom seam, with some notes in marker and a light stain on back.)

Keef Hartley BandBattle Of North West Six ... LP
Deram, 1969. Very Good Gatefold ... $19.99
A tremendous set from one of the best – and most under-recognized – groups of the British jazz rock scene at the end of the 60s! The group have an approach that mixes heavy blues-influenced jamming with some of the lighter, more lyrical touches that were showing up at the time – in a way that gives them a firmly grounded sound at one level, but also a slightly more sophisticated, contemplative approach – making the group almost a UK equivalent to the sound of the Steve Miller Band at the time. The jazzier tracks on the album feature work by some great straight British players – including Harry Beckett and Ray Warleigh – and the album's also got a few nice slightly funky cuts that are known for their breaks! Tracks include "The Dansette Kid", "Hickory", "Not Foolish, Not Wise", "Poor Mabel", "Believe In Me", "Don't Give Up", "Hickory", and "Tadpole". LP, Vinyl record album
(US stereo pressing, with London inner sleeve. Cover has light surface wear.)

An amazing collection of music – the legendary Fontana Records run of albums by tenor giant Tubby Hayes – a key player on the UK bop scene of the 50s, but one who took off in all these great new directions with these classic albums for the Fontana label in the following decade! The package features twelve full albums done by Tubby as a leader – all newly remastered by Gearbox, and packaged here with bonus material that was not on previous reissues – a number of alternate takes across the entire Fontana catalog! Each album comes in an LP-styled jacket with original cover art, save two, which are combined – and albums include Tubbs, Tubbs In New York, Palladium Jazz Date, Equation In Rhythm, Down In The Village, Late Spot At Scotts, Tubbs Tours, Return Visit, 100% Proof, Mexican Green, The Orchestra, and the 2CD version of the newly-discovered Grits, Beans, and Greens. Joachim KuhnMelodic Ornette Coleman – Piano Works 13 (180 gram pressing – with bonus track & download) ... LP
Act (Germany), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 29.99
One of the best albums we've heard from pianist Joachim Kuhn in years – a really thoughtful solo piano take on the music of Ornette Coleman – and one that definitely lives up to the "melodic" promise of the title! Kuhn's never totally straight ahead – and lord knows, Ornette never was either – but he approaches the songs here in this really beautiful way, by unlocking melodies and more sensitive moments that are sometimes lost in more iconic performances – many of which never included any piano at all in the instrumentation. Joachim's got all the edges of early years, but the slight current of sentiment is really a revelation – for both him and Ornette as well – on titles that include "Songworld", "Physical Chemistry", "Tears That Cry", "Somewhere", "She & He Is Who Fenn Love", "Love Is Not Generous Sex Belongs To Woman", "Food Stamps On The Moon", and "Immoriscible Most Capable Of Being". Also features a bonus track – the Kuhn composition "Dedication To Ornette/The End Of The World". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Francis LaiMan & A Woman (aka Un Homme Et Une Femme) ... LP
United Artists, 1967. Very Good+ ... $6.99
One of the greatest soundtracks ever – an archetypal album from French composer Francis Lai, and a record that set the tone for countless other imitations to come – yet which is still the best! The groove here is really unique – a spare blend of bossa influences, jazzy organ lines, and wordless vocals that are sung beautifully by French singers Nicole Croisille and Pierre Barouh – and although a mainstream success, the record was the initial force behind the legendary Saravah imprint that Barouh would form later, to record a wide range of groundbreaking work in a variety of genres. But history aside, the music here is plenty – and from the very first note the whole soundtrack grabs you with a sense of warmth and sentiment that defy description – modes never heard before in the soundtrack world, and which really broke the mold from Hollywood conventions! Titles include the seminal bossa number "Samba Saravah", plus "A Man & A Woman", "Today It's You", "In Our Shadow", "At 200 MPH", and "Stronger Than Us". LP, Vinyl record album

Master Musicians Of JoujoukaBrian Jones Presents The Pipes Of Pan At JouJouka ... LP
Rolling Stones, Late 60s/1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $49.99
Back before he was found floating face-down in a swimming pool, ex- (or late-) Stones member Brian Jones put together this landmark bit of trippiness for the Rolling Stones label. Although the music is largely ethnographic, the whole thing's got this neo-colonialist hipster edge to it – as Brion Gysin wrote the liner notes, Jones wrote an introduction (and included his picture), and the whole thing was made possible by the presence of British junkies in Morrocco. The music is very trippy and trance-like, with lots of pinched reed sounds and haunting throbbing pulsing. Wild stuff, and a cool cross-pollination of cultures. LP, Vinyl record album

Gwen McCraeSomething So Right ... LP
Cat, 1976. Near Mint- ... $16.99
Sexy soul from the great Gwen McCrae – a key follow-up to her massive Rockin Chair, and an album that showed that she could go a lot deeper than just crossover soul! Given Gwen's contribution to the early disco years, the record's got a surprisingly laidback feel – classic female southern soul at its best, with a number of tracks that hit a great sort of late nite, lovelorn sort of mode – almost like some of Ann Sexton's work from the time. Other tunes pick up the groove a bit more, but still go for more of a funky soul sort of style than a disco one – and all tracks really make the best use of Gwen's deep soul vocals. Clarence Reid wrote most of the material, and great cuts include "Love Without Sex", "Something So Right", "Tears On My Pillow", "Mr. Everything", "Damn Right It's Good", and "Iron Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Palmieri/Cal TjaderBamboleate ... LP
Tico, 1967. Very Good+ ... $39.99
An incredible collaboration between pianist Eddie Palmieri and vibist Cal Tajder – a record done for Tico in answer to their previous session for Verve – and a set that's even harder-jamming overall! Cal and Eddie really find something special together on the record – and both players groove into a descarga mode that burns even more strongly than their own other work of the decade – a masterful jam that's a really true collaboration, and which brings out the best that both musicians had to offer. Cal's moving way beyond his familiar modes here – with a fluid, freely colorful sound – and Eddie himself is beginning to hit some of the darker, harder notes that would show up even more strongly on his records of the 70s. There's a much more strongly jazz-based sound here than most of Palmieri's previous records – a really bold focus on the instrumentation as it rolls out over some great modally-informed grooves – and titles include "Bamboleate", "Resemblance", "Guajira Candela", "Mi Montuno", and "Come An Get It". Philadelphia International, 1977. Very Good ... $4.99
Although Jerry Butler had the first hit with "Only The Strong Survive" – way back in the late 60s, when Gamble & Huff were using his career to first forge their new ideas of Philly soul, Billy Paul does a great job with the cut here, taking it into a smooth modern mode that worked great in the clubs and on the radio. The rest of the record's great, too – and has a mellow sexy style that shows him moving past the early 70s years, but still keeping that frank and mature quality to his vocals that always made his work so compelling. Other tracks include "Everybody's Breaking Up", "The Times Of Our Lives", "Where I Belong", "Sooner Or Later", and a soulful version of "Takin' It To The Streets". LP, Vinyl record album

Paisley Park/Warner, 1987. New Copy 13LP & DVD ... $286.99 299.98
A fantastic record from Prince – a double-length set that came out at a time when the purple one was brimming over with energy and new ideas – and a step slightly in the direction of more socially conscious material! Everything that was great about Prince before the record is completely intact – his amazing ability to create funky grooves, slinky sensuality, and songs that are so catchy, they can win over audiences on both sides of the fence. But there's also some deeper elements here going on too – maybe more space for thoughtful presentation spread out over the 2LPs that comprised the original record – at a level that's only more confirmation of the never-ending genius of prince! Sunset Blvd, Mid 60s/1976. New Copy 2CDs ... $20.99 22.99
A huge batch of rare material from one of the freakiest, fuzziest groups of the 60s – all pulled from the archives of Roy Ames, and recorded in Houston and San Francisco in 1966 and 1967 – and mixed here with some equally wild Roky Erikson solo material from 1976! There's not much in the way of detailed notes, but if you love the Elevators as much as we do, you'll love the overall sound – as the whole thing's got a rawness that really shows off that special edge of the group and some of their key Texas psych contemporaries – served up here on tunes that include "You're Gonna Miss Me", "Before You Accuse Me", "Levitation", "Monkey Island", "Reverberation", "Tried To Hide", "The Word", "You Really Got Me", "I'm Gonna Love You Too", "Fire Engine", "She Lives In A Time Of Her Own", and "Kingdom Of Heaven" – plus some radio material too! The Roky Erikson tracks are even more raw, and even include some Dylan and Donovan covers – with titles that include "Catch The Wind", "Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll", "I'll Sing For You", "Don't Sing For Me Lucifer", "Lay Down Your Weary Tune", and "Baby Let Me Follow You Down". Walker BrothersSun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore ... LP
Smash, Mid 60s. Very Good- ... $19.99
A seminal album from the mighty Walker Brothers – the group that featured the young Scott Walker before he leapt out onto his legendary solo career! The style here is a bit different than Scott's solo work – or maybe like his first two albums, a bit – a mix of Brill Building pop and soul influences, the latter of which really make the music great – as Scott, Gary, and John Walker (not related – not even their real names!) work with some great American tunes from both sides of the fence, and really make magic – thanks to top-shelf production that echoes a Phil Spector mode, and which cements the mix of soul and pop at a level that made them huge in the UK beat scene of the 60s. Titles include the classic "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore", plus "Everything's Gonna Be All Right", "Don't Fight It", "Take It Like A Man", "I Need You", "My Love Is Growing", "Young Man Cried", "People Get Ready", and "After The Lights Go Out". A lucky number 13 for the Brownswood Bubblers series – a great reminder that the compilation is still one of the best places we know for getting turned onto new music from the global underground! And by that, we don't mean the lame dance music "underground" of more than a decade ago – where this week's big track would go stale by the next. Instead, this territory is much richer – plumbed by DJ Gilles Peterson via his Worldwide Radio series, and the always-great work of the Brownswood label – an imprint that's dedicated to finding the best sort of genre-crossing, category-defying music we've always loved here at Dusty Groove! The tracks within are proof that in the right hands, soul, jazz, and other styles know no boundaries – or limits of imagination – on cuts that include "Ley Lines" by Emma Jean Thackray, "Nuketown" by Tiana Khasi, "Something My Heart Trusts" by Yazmin Lacey, "Ideas" by Sonnymoon, "No White God" by Oscar #Worldpeace, "Move" by Lynda Dawn, "Sailor" by Wu Lu feat Binisa Bonner, "Only Trying 2 Tell U" by Puma Blue, "Jury Judge Executioner" by Alxnder London, and "Continue The Fun (space version)" by Mauskovic Dance Band. Schema (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99
Stunning compilation of Italian grooves from the early 70's – and one that has a slightly different twist than some of the other one's we've been stocking. The folks at Schema have put this one together, and the set's got a feel that's similar to some of the newer releases they've been working on over the past few years. The grooves are funky, yes, but they also have a light and airy sound, with lots of groovy bossa tinges, cool vocal parts, and the kind of smooth Italian feel that you'd never find on American records from the time. The tracks are played by groups like Expo 80, The Paris Studio Group, The Psycheground Group, The Black Fire, and The Hawksworth Big Band and String. Most of the tracks are breezy and groovy, with a sound that's similar to some of the best stuff on the Sound Gallery compilation – and different than the other funky Italian grooves we've been stocking! Nice one. CD

One of Roy Ayers' biggest albums ever – and also one of his deepest, too! The whole thing's an incredible album of mellow jazzy soul – and it shows Roy at the crossroads, perfecting his earlier funk style with a sweet mellow R&B edge, getting a bit slicker, but still staying on the righteous path, and opening up a whole new bag in soul music. There's a wonderful electric vibe running through the record – not just from Roy's vibes, but from the Fender Rhodes and Arp work by Phillip Woo – and the amazing energy of the rest of the group too. Features the landmark title cut – "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", one of those tunes that becomes more and more of a classic each year – plus spiritual numbers like "Third Eye" , "Keep on Walking", and "The Golden Rod". Very righteous, and with a cool dope jazzy groove! LP, Vinyl record album

Jubilee, 1957. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rare Jubilee Records album from Art Blakey – one of his non-Blue Note sets from the late 50s, cut during the year of 1957 – a time when the Jazz Messengers were hopping around a lot of different labels! This version of the group is searing and soulful – and features Johnny Griffin on tenor, Bill Hardman on trumpet, Sam Dockery on piano, and Spanky DeBrest on bass – plus the unusual addition of Sabu Martinez on conga, rocking and rollicking alongside Blakey's drums in an amazing way! The set's quite different than some of Art's "with percussion" dates for Blue Note – as Sabu's congas kind of just set an extra fire to the hardbop groove – giving it a slight Latin flavor, but more than anything, just getting in a wicked edge that really cooks up the session. Griffin is great, as always, and the album features four long tracks "Woddyn You", "Sakeena", "Shorty", and "Dawn On The Desert". LP, Vinyl record album

Okka Disk, 1998. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest releases ever from the Okka Disk label – a legendary set that stands as a great testament to the global improvising scene that exploded in Chicago during the 90s! Back in the early years of FMP, nobody would have thought to use the name "Peter Brotzmann" and "Chicago" in the same context – but by the time of these recordings, the legendary reedman had been spending quite a bit of time in the Windy City – working strongly alongside that decade's fresh generation of improvisers, at a level that also helped Brotzmann discover new energy in his music too! The lineup here is great – both octet and tentet groups that operate in an improvising orchestra tradition – with players that include Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Mars Williams on tenor and alto, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Mats Gustafsson on baritone and fluteophone, Joe McPhee on pocket cornet and valve trombone, Fred Lonberg Holm on cello, Kent Kessler on bass, Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake on drums and percussion, and Brotzmann himself on tenor, clarinet, and tarogato. The set features three different live recordings, and one long studio set recorded over two days – a fantastic collection of music. A beautiful comeback LP recorded by LA alto genius Sonny Criss in the mid 60s – his first American session after a few years in France, and a few years off the scene back home! Sonny's time away had profound effects on his playing – and on this album, he returns transformed from the straight bop mode of his early days, into a mature sensitive artist in sound – capable of an amazing range of emotion, tone, and style! A number of the tracks in this set are pop tunes or standards – like "Black Coffee", "Days Of Wine & Roses", and "When Sunny Gets Blue" – but Criss plays them with a style that transforms them into something completely new, with a lyricism and emotional edge that extends well beyond the original structure of the song. Other tracks include "Steve's Blues", "Greasy", and "Sunrise Sunset". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Eddie Lockjaw DavisGoin To The Meeting ... LP
Prestige, 1962. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great one – and one of the rarest Prestige dates from Eddie Lockjaw Davis! The album features a unique group that includes Horace Parlan on piano – in place of the organ that had graced many of Davis' earlier Prestige records – with added groovy energy from Buddy Catlett on bass, Art Taylor on drums, and Willie Bobo on congas – all players who seem to give Davis an even sharper edge than before – not entirely the modern tones of his pairings with Johnny Griffin, but a bit less sleepy than in the company of a Hammond. The congas really kick things up nicely – and there's an undercurrent of fire that almost recalls some of the best Blue Note dates of this nature from the time. Titles include "Little Cougar", "Yes Yes", "Pass The Hat", "Goin To Meetin", and "Oh Babee". LP, Vinyl record album

A smoother set than usual for Lee Dorsey – recorded with frequent partner Allen Toussaint, but done in a sweeter, more modern soul style that's a refreshing change from earlier years! (C'mon, you didn't expect Lee to keep hitting the same old chunky grooves – did you?) The shift here is almost like that of Lamont Dozier's in the 70s – as Lee moves into a fuller, richer sound – one that shows that he's got a lot of different aspects to his music that hadn't showed up on previous albums, and which nicely brings him out of the Crescent City soul ghetto. There's till some nice Nola rhythms going down on the set, and all the tracks are originals by Toussaint – but honestly, the smoothest cuts are almost the best – and offer a great chance to hear Dorsey's great vocals in a whole new mode. Tracks include "Soul Mine", "Night People", "Can I Be The One", "Say It Again", and "Keep On Doing It To Me". LP, Vinyl record album

The cover to this one has The 5th Dimension sporting some heavy-duty outfits – and the album's got an equally bold sound to match! The group's still in very familiar territory here – working under the direction of Bones Howe – but they're also completely confident in their bag – stepping out with a solid, punched-up approach to pop – one that draws strongly from the soulful harmonies of the quintet, yet which also has some pointedly personal moments as well. As before, the choice of songs is easily one of the best aspects of the record – and the group do a great cover of "Viva Tirado", plus "What Does It Take To Wind Your Love", "Love's Lines, Angles, & Rhymes", "Time & Love", "Guess Who", and "He's A Runner". Side two features the group expanded to a sextet – drummer Jo Jones added in for rhythm, plus Roy Eldridge on trumpet and Sonny Stitt on both alto and tenor sax. One of the most creative club acts of the 70s – the mighty Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band! Before starting his Kid Creole & the Coconuts combo, August Darnell worked to great fame with Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band – kind of a campy, jazzy ensemble – one that worked with a 20s aesthetic over a disco groove! A key moment in the career of Esther Phillips – and a record that really has her shaking off the rougher bluesy styles of the earlier years, and pointing the way towards strong jazz success in the 70s! The album's definitely burnin, but with a sophisticated vibe too – as Esther works with backing from a small combo that includes Jack Wilson on piano, Richard Tee on organ, Chuck Rainey on bass, and Cornell Dupree on guitar – a lineup that almost hits the same vibe as her later work on CTI/Kudu – and which brings out a new depth in Esther's vocals that's simply amazing! There's a heartbreaking quality to most of the numbers – a mix of roots and class, depth and poise – all served up in a style that's unlike any other singer before or since. Titles include "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream", "And I Love Him", "Shangri-La", "I'm Getting Long Alright", and "Please Send Me Someone To Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red & green Broadway pressing.)

✨✧ VariousPuissance 13 + 2 ... LP
Musea/Lion, 1971. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A wicked collection of French prog and fusion from the start of the 70s – all with a jazzy or folky vibe that shows just how wonderfully warm the French scene was at the time – and how it could be very different than similar music coming from Germany, England, or Italy during the same stretch! All tracks here were recorded live, and although the groups are varied, the sound is surprisingly unified – with loads of funky fusion moments that are kind of an offbeat, outside take on styles that American groups were just beginning to explore – with some especially strong keyboard moments that point the way towards directions that Herbie Hancock would take a few years later. There's a few other tunes that bring in acoustic elements, almost with an acid folk sound – and titles include "Charles" by Catharsis, "Arkham" by Spectre, "Mekanik Kommando" by Magma, "Informers Blues" by Zabu, "Jappy's Boogie" by Solitude, "All's So Comic" by Ergo Sum, "I'm On My Way" by Voyage, "Promenade"b y Claude Engel, "Aria Populaire" by Catherine Ribeiro & Alpes, and "Iguane" by Alain Markusfeld. Howard BlakeElephant Called Slowly ... LP
Bell, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $26.99
An unbelievably fantastic soundtrack – written for the silly sequel to the film Born Free! Howard Blake lays down some amazingly funky instrumental tracks that have a light "jungle" sound – with lots of rolling bass and hard drums in a sweet late 60s funky sort of style. There's at least 2 or 3 great break tracks on here, and there's a number of other nice ones with a breezy jazzy feel to them. The whole thing's great, with nary a dud track, and the highlights include "An Elephant Called Slowly", "Mr. Mopoji", "Elephant Rides Again", "Poli-Poli", and "Cheetah". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has one slightly bumped corner, but is great overall.)

Janus, 1973. Sealed ... $4.99
Mellow soul/rock LP by the male/female team of Donna Carson and Hedges Capers. The vocals are a bit weak, and not really our bag, but the band backing them is pretty good, and features some excellent bass work by Carol Kaye that shows up on the intros to a number of the songs. Tracks include "Daytona", "Guava Jelly", "I Want To Thank You", and "Real Fine Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

Joanna GardnerJoanna Gardner ... CD
Expansion (UK), 1985. New Copy ... $9.99
A rare lost modern soul gem, which we too rarely come across! Recorded in 1985 for the Philly World label as Gardner's debut LP, the story as we understand it is that this record never really hit the shelves – for some reason it was pulled at the last minute by the label. We can't figure out why, as the set's got very nice 80s Philly production and arrangements courtesy Dexter Wansel, Bobby Eli and Nick Martinelli – with a smooth 80s groove soul sound that would have been a big hit then, and is even more sought after now. The album includes Joanna's great cut "Pick Up The Pieces", an excellent stepper's cut, plus "We Can Make It", "Special Feelings", "Watching You", "Spooky" and "I Could Never Love Another Like You". Great White CaneGreat White Cane ... LP
Lion, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $29.99
Early group that featured Rick James on vocals and percussion, and also handling most of the songwriting chores. The sound is a mix of rock and funk, with a bit of a trippy soul sound, and that kind of mixed group feel that got big after the SF scene of the late 60s. No real standout cuts, but a nice record if you dig that rock-break kind of sound. Includes the extended "Country Woman Suite", plus the cuts "Mother Earth", "Find It", and "Big Showdown". EMI, 1984. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A great one from Fela – tight and outtasite, with one of our favorite tracks ever by him – "ITT", also known as "International Thief Thief"! The record's got a clean and simple approach to the groove that's right up there with the best of the Afrika 70 era – lots of snapping beats at the bottom, and snaking horns that really make the tracks cook! Titles include "ITT", "Sorrow Tears & Blood", and "Colonial Mentality". LP, Vinyl record album

Solar, 1983. Very Good Gatefold ... $4.99
The gangster image on the cover might be a tipoff to the sound here – as Lakeside help forge the roots of g-funk with their classic bass-heavy sound on the album! The record's great – every bit as funky as previous Lakeside work in all the right parts, but also showing a greater development of the group past their funk roots – able to mix mellower moments with groovers, at that sublime level that Fatback hit when the 80s began! There's plenty of greatness here for everyone – and titles include "Real Love", "Untouchable", "So Let's Love", "Turn The Music Up", and "Raid". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ MasqueradersLove Anonymous ... LP
ABC, 1977. Sealed ... $5.99
One of the few full albums ever cut by The Masqueraders – a stellar vocal group who recorded some excellent singles in the 60s, and were fortunate enough to be pulled into the big time by Isaac Hayes for his Hot Buttered Soul imprint on ABC! The band mixes their smooth Memphis style with some tighter arrangements by Ike and Lester Snell – and the result is a nice batch of modern soul tracks that keeps up the groove of the Hot Buttered sound nicely! Tracks include "Be For Real", "Runaway Slave", "It's A Terrible Thing To Waste Your Love", and "Love Between A Woman And A Man". LP, Vinyl record album

Kenny RankinKenny Rankin Album ... LP
Little David, 1977. Near Mint- ... $2.99
A simple title, but a classic album – arguably one of Kenny Rankin's biggest hits of the 70s, but every bit as great as his lesser-known work! Don Costa arranged the set, but the sound is still wonderfully intimate – with a focus on Kenny's vocals and acoustic guitar, steeped in folksy roots, but carried off with plenty of warmer, chromatic tones that have a great dose of jazz in the mix. The core group's a quartet, with electric piano and organ from Wendy Haas – and titles include the megahit "On And On", plus "House Of Gold", "Here's That Rainy Day", "Through The Eye Of The Eagle", "Make Believe", "I Love You", and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". 13th Floor ElevatorsEaster Everywhere (180 gram pressing) ... LP
International Artists, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99
Raw early genius from the 13th Floor Elevators – cut back at a time when the Texas combo were one of the hippest things going in the late 60s American underground! There's lots of sounds here that other cats would copy over the decades – but the record has a gritty brilliance that's way better than any of its many imitators – that kind of unique burst of new ideas and young energy that made psych so wonderful when it first emerged in remarkable moments like this! Roky Erickson is wonderful – and the record will definitely illustrate his genius way better than any later efforts to bear his own name in the lead – and the production is just the right blend of studio tricks and homegrown oddness to make the whole thing electrified throughout. Tracks include "Slip Inside This House", "Slide Machine", "Dust", "Earthquake", "Levitation", "Postures", "Baby Blue", and "Nobody To Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Booker T & PriscillaBooker T & Priscilla ... LP
A&M, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Memphis goes to California – with surprising results! The album's one of a few that Booker T cut after splitting with the MGs – of legendary Stax Records fame – and it's completely different than his earlier sides, and not in a bad way! Book recorded the set in California with wife Priscilla Jones, and it's done in a mixture of soul, rock, and folk styles – one that's as much in keeping with the Laurel Canyon or San Francisco scenes than Book's earlier work was with the Memphis ones. Booker and Priscilla both sing – sometimes together, sometimes apart – and the double-length set is pretty warm, fuzzy, and a bit trippy. Titles include "Delta Song" and "Wedding Song", both of which are standout tracks – and other titles include "She", "Funny Honey", "Medley From The Jones Ranch", and "The Sun Don't Shine".
