AuraSativa ... LP
Cicadelic, 1976. New Copy ... $6.99
Mid 70s funk rock from Aura – the psych Sativa from the San Francisco group – a dense blend of funky horns & rhythms, chorus vocals, organ fuzz and heavily -layed piano, lumbering drums and blazing electric guitars! This is a group that cared not for stylistic boundaries and they bring some real heat on this one and only album! Titles include "You Got Something", "Clap Your Hands", "First Taste Of Love", "Gonna Make It", "Sativa", "Mess Up Your Mind", "Don't You Worry", "Trying To Hold It Down" and "Skyrocket". Miles DavisAura ... CD
Columbia, 1989. Used ... $2.99
One of Miles Davis' last albums – and a swirling batch of "color" tracks that's almost a blending of his Gil Evans work with the early electric years! The album's one long extended suite – and it's got a moody feel that's really great – a shifting, shimmering sound that takes us back to the Evans years – but also with some of the colder, more modern moments of the late 60s. The set was recorded in Denmark, and is written and produced by Palle Mikkelborg – and it features a host of players, both American and European, including John McLaughlin on guitar, Bo Steif on bass, Jesper Thilo on reeds, Idrees Sulieman on trumpet, and Thomas Clausen on keyboards. Miles' solos are the primary focus over the large group setting – and each of the individual movements is named after a color: "White", "Yellow", "Orange", "Red", "Green", "Blue", "Electric Red", "Indigo", and "Violet". PortisheadThird (Limited Box Set) ... LP
Mercury, 2008. Near Mint- 2LP+12" Box Set ... $49.99
A decade since their previous effort, and 14 years since their previous masterpiece, Portishead returns with Third – and, oh, what a mindblowing third act. The first thing you'll realize about Third is that it's not Dummy Part 3 – a welcome and surprising trait – but it does take their earlier way with a spooky, brooding and ominous framework to new dimensions. Secondly, there's no obvious single – it's to be taken as a whole. Beth Gibbons's vocals are as soul wrenching as ever, and an overall stark, melancholic beauty connects Portishead '08 to the old stuff, but they go deeper. Some bits are quite minimalist, wringing emotion from a low strum, a distant chime, or a haunting bit of dissonance – other parts are more richly layered and even a bit jarring. Pulp cinematic aura, feedback textured psychedelia, haunting European pop, and traces of field recorded folk flavor the sound – they've dabbled in all of these elements before – but never with this particular feel. The sound of epiphany. How many acts in the pop realm create a whole new style with a classic album, and then pull off something nearly as great almost 15 years later, without ripping themselves off? Add Portishead to that small list. We'll call '08 early, this is the best pop album of the year. Titles include "Silence", "Hunter", "Nylon Smile", "The Rip", "We Carry On", "Deep Water", "Machine Gun", "Small", "Magic Doors", "Threads". LP, Vinyl record album

Marijohn WilkinBallads Of Blue & Gray (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Omni (Australia), 1961. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A very unusual record from a time when America was starting to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Civil War – a moment that yielded a surprisingly large number of war-themed recordings, although done with a vibe that was pure 60s overall! Marijohn Wilkin is a folk singer by trade, but one who also sang a fair bit of country too – and here, she brings together both of those elements in a session directed by guitarist Hank Garland, with backup vocals from Nashville stalwarts the Jordanaires! The tunes are mostly older numbers, but given a tight punch that's almost early pop folk – with Marijohn's voice upfront in the mix, recorded with a nice degree of echo that would work well with pop records too. Titles include "Johnny Is My Darling", "The Southern Soldier Boy", "Oh Freedom", "Aura Lee", "Two Brothers", and "Weeping Sad & Lonely". Even better, though, are the bonus tracks here – which are numbers that are more country overall, and have great production that really knows what to do with Wilkin as a singer – titles that include "Wayfaring Blues", "Cold Cold Heart", "What Can I Do To Please You", "Babara Allen", "Sparks", "Higher Than High", "Whip Poor Whill", "If You're Sure", and "Carmel By The Sea". VariousMen In The Glass Booth – Groundbreaking Re-edits & Remixes By The Disco Era's Most Influential DJs (3CD set) ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 34.99
An incredible collection – and one that fills in a crucially under-documented side of the New York dancefloor generation – the wealth of special mixes and edits that were made for that city's important DJs for their own use in clubs! The package sorts through a mountain of never-issued acetates, and goes way past conventional disco or rare club collections – to showcase the special mixing talents these DJs brought to their re-presentation of the material – which was usually done on tape, then pressed onto acetate discs for their own private use! Those rare treasures are brought forth here – in a beautiful package that's also overflowing with fantastic notes that finally give this lost history its due – all handled by Al Kent – who's a hell of a mixer himself, as well as an underground club historian. 3CD set is overflowing with gems – and titles include "I Just Wanna Say I Love You (John Luongo rmx)" by Leon Collins, "What About Love (Tony Gioe rmx)" by Marboo, "Ten Percent (Walter Gibbons Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Double Exposure, "Inside America (Rick Gianatos disco queen acetate edit)" by Juggy Murray Jones, "Dancing Free (John Luongo rmx)" by Hot Ice, "Black Water Gold (Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by The Sunshine Band, "Magic Bird Of Fire (Francois Kevorkian Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Salsoul Orchestra, "It's Good For The Soul (Jay Negron Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Salsoul Orchestra, "My Love Is Free (Walter Gibbons disco madness rmx)" by Double Exposure, "Reaching Out For Happiness (Jonathan Fearing rmx)" by Fay Hauser, "Let Me Be Your Fantasy (Tom Savarese rmx)" by Love Symphony Orchestra, "The Beat Goes On & On (Jim Burgess rmx)" by Ripple, "I Wanna Be Near You (John Morales Sunshine Sound acetate edit)" by Ruby Andrews, "I've Been Looking For Somebody (Walter Gibbons rmx)" by TC James & The Fist O Funk Orchestra, "The Disco Scene (Rick Gianatos rmx)" by Lake Shore Drive, "Bumpsie's Whipping Cream (Tom Savarese rmx)" by TC James & The Fist O Funk Orchestra, "Janice (Bobby DJ Guttadoro rmx)" by Skip Mahoney, "My Number's Up (Tee Scott rmx)" by The Salsoul Orchestra, "The Love Bug Done Bit Me Again (David Todd rmx)" by Skyliners, "LA Sunshine (Robert Ouimet rmx)" by Aura, "Love Has Come My Way (Jim Burgess rmx)" by Tony Valor Sound Orchestra, "Handsome Ma (Bobby DJ Guttadoro rmx)" by Sparkle Tuhran & Friends, "Love Thang (Tee Scott rmx)" by First Choice, "Burn Me Up (Jellybean Benitez edit)" by Kay Gees, "Love Is The Message (Tee Scott rmx)" by Brooklyn Express, "Changes (Jellybean Benitez rmx)" by Chain Reaction, "J'Ouvert (Frank Sestito rmx)" by John Gibbs & The Jam Band, "By The Way You Dance (Bobby DJ Guttadaro rmx)" by Bunny Sigler, "It's Good For The Soul (Walter Gibbons disco madness version)" by Salsoul Orchestra, and "It's A Better Than Good Time (Walter Gibbons rmx)" by Gladys Knight & The Pips. Chilli Funk (UK), 2005. Used 2CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A nice set from modern club soul diva Verna Francis – with a sleek production that recalls some of the better Chillifunk and Restless Soul soundscapes – and an even deeper aura of spacey 70s atmosphere! Verna's vocal style carries the warm, sexy and grooving styles she introduced us to on her singles – and she really delivers for the full length! The arrangements are lightly funky, in styles reverent of the Roy Ayers and Innervisions-era Stevie Wonder schools – with a sparklingly modern sound of keys, beats and soulful strings! Tracks include "Never Too Late", "Earth Is The Place", "Rimes", "Down To Earth", "What Kind Of Word", "Pause", "Keep On Dreaming", "Twilight", "Look" and "Sunshine". CD

✨✧ Sun RaVisits Planet Earth/Interstellar Low Ways ... CD
Saturn/Evidence, Late 50s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 lost classics by Sun Ra on one CD! Visits Planet Earth features music that was recorded by The Arkestra in Chicago in 1957 and 1958. Some of the tracks are from the same session as the Sound Of Joy LP, and a few others were from sessions later in the year. Ra plays piano and "solar piano", and the group's got some added percussion and tympani. Along with the usual suspects, James Spaulding also sits in with the group on a few tracks, playing both alto and flute. Titles include "Eve", "Overtones Of China", "Two Tones", and "El Viktor". Interstellar Low Ways is a record that features material was recorded in 1959 and 1960, but unissued until the mid 60's. Ra plays piano, chimes, and gong, and the tracks have a nice laid back spacey feel, with some ensemble vocals chanted by the group. Ronnie Boykins also plays the space gong on one cut, which sounds very nice. Cuts include "Somewhere In Space", "Space Loneliness", "Space Aura", and "Interplanetary Music". CD

Brenner's FolkDaurat Oest/Clara Llum/Amor Perdut/Ho Se ... 7-inch
Edigsa/Wah Wah (Spain), 1966. Near Mint- (pic cover)... $1.99
Rare 60s work from Brenner's Folk – a Spanish group who later changed their name to Pic Nic, and had a lot more success in that format! The style here is a bit folksy, but also recorded with a garagey style too – a nicely dark current that makes the male singer sound especially nice, although his duets with the group's female vocalist are pretty great too. Some tunes are more straightforward, while others have some trippier guitar – and titles include "Ho Se", "Clara Lluna", "Amor Perdut", and "Daurat Oest". – a swirling blend of guitar, organ, and vocals – all served up with an earthy pre-psych sort of style! The group features one female singer, whose role would grow even more in later years, when they changed their name to Pic Nic – and the lyrics have a Catalan style 7-inch, Vinyl record

Hot Wax/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $13.99
A standout set from the great Laura Lee – a deep soul singer with power to rival the greatness of Aretha Franklin, but one who's also got a funkier punch to her music too! The album's a great blend of late 60s female southern and tight 70s bad sister funk – a style that's a bit like that of Gwen McCrae at her early best, but handled here with a fuller vibe that's right in keeping with the best modes of the Invictus/Hot Wax scene from the Holland Dozier Holland team! Vocals are wonderful throughout – and the album features the breakbeat classic "Crumbs Off The Table" – plus "Guess Who I Saw Today", "If I'm Good Enough To Love (I'm Good Enough To Marry)", "Rip Off", "You've Got To Save Me", and "Workin & Lovin Together". A stunning 2 CD set that compiles all the soulful tracks that Laura Lee cut during the early 70's! Laura was a great southern soul singer in the early 70s – with a hard soulful voice that was easily one of the best of the time – and her rare Hot Wax recordings are always a treat, with an all-solid, no-filler approach all the time. This set features loads of great tracks – more than we'd been aware she ever did – including "Women's Love Rights", "Rip Off", "I'll Catch You When You Fall", "Her Picture Matches Mine", "Crumbs Off The Table", "Mirror Of Your Soul", and the heartbreaking "It's Not What You Fall For, It's What You Stand For". Tiger Bay (UK), 1971. Sealed (reissue)... $24.99
A dark and extremely avant garde soundtrack from the great Ennio Morricone – one that's done in collaboration with his own Gruppo Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza – an ensemble with roots in film scoring, but expressions that are more in the mode of 20th century avant! The music is a blend of free improvisation and more straight ahead jazz – with electric guitar, trumpet, violin, and percussion mixed with lots of weird effects and electronics – much more experimental than some of Morricone's more famous soundtracks of the time, and given a nice sense of direction from conductor Bruno Nicolai. The whole thing's incredibly spooky – one of the most turgid scores we've ever heard from the pen of Morricone – and the titles include "Sequita", "Evaporazione", "Dal Sogno E Ritorno", "Folle Folle", and "Notte E Misteri". Laura Nyro with LabelleGonna Take A Miracle (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia, 1971. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
A tremendous album from Laura Nyro – a real return to the soulful style of her roots, thanks to help from Labelle on backing vocals, and the team of Gamble & Huff on production! If Nyro only ever gave the world this record, that would more than be enough – because the whole thing's an incredibly hip blend of her own great songwriting and some of the more righteous strands of American soul music at the time. Most of the tracks are older soul numbers – some done relatively straight, others done with the more personal, contemplative style you'd expect from Nyro during these years. And decades before Amy Winehouse or Joss Stone started hitting territory like this, Nyro proved that a set of soul tracks like this could come off well, if handled with the right talent! Titles include "The Bells", "I Met Him On A Sunday", "Spanish Harlem", "You've Really Got A Hold On Me", "Desiree", "The Wind", "Nowhere To Run", and "It's Gonna Take A Miracle". Enrico Rava & Aga Taura ConfabEl Convidado ... LP
Svart (Finland), 1975. New Copy ... $24.99
One of the most obscure albums ever recorded by Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava – and one of the greatest as well! The set is a rare meeting between Rava and some key players on the Argentine scene of the mid 70s – a great quartet that features Fernando Gelbard on Fender Rhodes, Adalberto Cevasco on bass, Nestor Astarita on drums, and Chango Faras Gomez on percussion – all working with Rava in a groove that's maybe warmer and more soulful than both his spacious and more experimental sides recorded in America and overseas! We always love Gelbard on Rhodes – and his work here really adds a lot to the record – never dominating, but always shaping the sound and forming the rhythm patterns – while Rava soars out with some open, well-placed solos. Titles include "Chico", "Ate Um Dia", "Barco Hasta El Cielo", and "Enrico Seis Octavo". LP, Vinyl record album

Shout (Japan), 2006. New Copy ... $24.99
A funky soul double-header – one that features live material both by Osaka Monaurail and the legendary Marva Whitney! The set starts out with a few tracks by OM – playing in that razor-sharp, James Brown-inspired groove that we love so much – easily the greatest contemporary JB-driven funk we can think of! Singer Ryo Nakata throws in a bit of vocals over the group's instrumental grooves – but then steps aside so that Marva Whitney can take center stage for the remaining three-fourths of the album – singing with the same raw fury as on her recent studio set with Osaka Monaurail! The sound here is incredible – easily some of the best funk-revival work we can think of, and the sort of record that should make Marva plenty proud after all these years. Titles include "New New Type Thing", "Evil", "I Made A Mistake", "It's My Thing", "Your Love Was Good For Me", "Things Got To Get Better", "What Do I Have To Do", and "Daddy Don't Know About Sugar Bear". Tenorist Don Byas is one of those players who always seemed to get more recognition in Europe than the US – or if that's not entirely the case, he at least got more chances to record properly than he ever did over here! This excellent 18 track CD features tunes from 3 early 50s sessions that Byas recorded in Paris – all of them in a small group setting that really let him open up on tenor in a mellow soulful way. Most tracks are relatively short, but the quality of Byas' solos is wonderful – and the CD represents some of the finest work you could ever hope to find by him from the postwar years. Chess, 1971. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare work by Laura Lee – a singer who's best known for her 70s hits on the Hot Wax label, but who sounds equally great here on her earlier sides for Chess! Lee's deep soul approach was a perfect match for Chess at the end of the 60s – and the work here often has her coming across with a hard and heavy approach that rivaled the best female soul coming out of Stax or Atlantic during the same era – no surprise, considering that most of the material here was recorded down in Muscle Shoals, far from the Chicago studios and sweeter production styles of most other artists on Chess! Rick Hall handled the Muscle Shoals material – in a real Fame Records mode – and other cuts were put together by Gene Barge and Cash McCall. The sound is great throughout – with a deeper soul groove than in her early 70s recordings, and vocal power that she hardly ever matched again! Titles include "Mama's Got A Good Thing", "That's How It Is", "Dirty Old Man", "She Don't Love You", "Another Man's Woman", "I Need to Belong To Someone", and "Love More Than Pride". Laura Nyro's first album ever – originally issued by Verve/Forecast in the mid 60s, but brought back out on the market by Columbia, during the height of Nyro's early 70s fame for the label! Even at this early point, Nyro sounds wonderful – a fair bit more soulful than most other female pop singers of her time – with a fully-fleshed out approach to the vocals that's mature and sensitive, and almost a bit more confident at times than in later years. Arrangements are by Herb Bernstein, and almost have the same sort of sunny feel as The 5th Dimension in their famous covers of Nyro's tunes – again with more soul than we might have expected for the time. Akerblom & ZengerAkerblom & Zenger – Live At Roma Jazz 2015 ... LP
Jazzaggression, 2015. New Copy ... $19.99
A beautifully spiritual set of duets between bassist Teemu Akerblom and saxophonist Mike Zenger – playing together here without any other instrumentation at all! Akerblom sets things up in a modal mode on most numbers – but mellower, without any piano or drums – and Zenger then blows these long, soulful solos on alto sax and flute – the former with a tone that's often quite deep, with a great deal of feeling. Things get slightly more outside and improvised as the set moves on – a shift that gives the whole thing a bit of a loft jazz vibe – and titles include "Peaceful Mornings", "So One Has To Go", "Abstract Blues & The Truth", "Frozen Land", and "Aurajoen Rannoilla". A classic "with strings" session from Clifford Brown – nearly as well-done and perfect as some of Charlie Parker's sides for Verve, handled here with perhaps a slightly sweeter touch, as Neal Hefti's the man on arrangements. The core group's the Brown/Roach combo, augmented by a smallish string section – and Clifford's right up front blowing warm and glistening solos, with titles that include "Willow Weep For Me", "Yesterdays", "Laura", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", and "Portrait Of Jennie". Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99 16.99
A huge collection of work from the great Bobby Charles – a sometimes-overlooked figure in late 50s music, but a key force in developing the sound of Louisiana at the time! Bobby hailed from the cajun part of the state, but also drank heavily from the R&B that was brewing up in New Orleans – and the records within are part of a fantastic genre-crossing legacy that's always gotten Charles equal interest from fans of older rock and soul! The package is very heavy on key material that Bobby recorded for Chess Records, including a number of tracks that were not issued at the time – and the set also features some later singles for Imperial, which continue the kind of Crescent City soulfulness that Bobby really helped forge with a few key contemporaries as the start of a much bigger legacy to come. The set features 48 tracks in all – with titles that include "Oh Yeah", "Since She's Gone", "Watch It Sprocket", "I'm A Fool To Care", "Mr Moon", "Ain't Got No Home", "Laura Lee", "Take It Easy Greasy", "One Eyed Jack", "No More", "You Can Suit Yourself", "On Bended Knee", "Hey Good Lookin", "Why Did You Leave", "Your Picture", "Good Lovin", "Those Eyes", and "What A Party". Also includes a few bonus tracks that show Bobby's influence on other artists – tracks by Fats Domino, Clarence Henry, John Fred, and Bill Haley. CD

✨✧ El ChicanoViva Tirado ... LP
Kapp, 1970. Very Good ... $7.99
Amazing stuff – and the beginning of a strong tradition of west coast funky Latin groups! El Chicano were one of a number of groups to emerge from LA of the 60s – rising forth on a wave of Mexican American pride to come up with a west coast version of the Latin Soul sound that had been emanating from Spanish Harlem a few years earlier. The group had an organ-heavy sound that first scored big on their rendition of Gerald Wilson's "Viva Tirado" – done as a single by the group with a stepping jazz beat that was missing from the earlier version, which worked great with their bubbly organ sound. The album was recorded to follow up the hit – done as a live set after hours at the Kabuki Sukiyaki Restaurant in south LA, and filled with tight jazzy covers 60s groovers like "Cantaloupe Island", "Eleanor Rigby", "Hurt So Bad", and "Coming Home Baby". The record's also got an amazing version of "Quiet Village" – and while it may not be as Latin as some of the group's later work, it's the beginning of a great tradition, and has a sound that was copied endlessly – but rarely matched! Not to be confused with the Laura Nyro hit "Eli's Coming", this group's one that's headed up by Philly Soul maestro Bobby Eli – composer of, producer for, and guitarist on countless 70s soul hits! The group's Bobby's own, and has a sound that's very much in keeping with the best Philly disco of the period – with likely suspect players that include Ron Kersey on keyboards, Vince Montana on vibes, and Larry Washington on congas. Most tunes feature a 3-woman vocal chorus singing the lyrics – very much in the classic Philly female disco group mode – and titles include "Heavenly", "Foxfire, "Lickety Split", "Love Chant", "Why Don'cha", "Hop Scotch", and oh, a version of "Eli's Coming"! EmArcy, 1956. Very Good ... $3.99
A key American album from trumpeter Rolf Ericson – a player with roots in the Swedish scene, but one who also made some big waves on the west coast during the 50s! Although Rolf was living in the US at the time of the date, the set was actually recorded in Sweden, on a tour of that nation – with a killer group that features Cecil Payne on baritone, Duke Jordan on piano, Art Taylor on drums, and John Simmons on bass – a tight little quintet who give Ericson's trumpet one of its greatest settings on record so far! There's a nice dark edge to some of the best numbers – most of which are originals by members of the group – and titles include "Forecast", "Vacker Flicka", "Visby Groove Alley", "Flight To Jordan", a medley of "I Cover The Waterfront"/"Laura"/"Everything Happens To Me", and "This Time The Dream's On Me". We've been on board with FL all along and Cosmogramma might be the best ride yet – it's bigger, spacier and more instantly gratifying than earlier efforts – mixing bright, buoyant electronics, waves of textured atmospherics, strings that range from lovely to spooky and other live instrumentation. 17 tracks in all: "Clock Catcher", "Nose Art", "Zodiac S**t", "Recoiled", "Dance Of The Pseudo Nymph", "German Haircut", "Do The Astral Plane", "Galaxy In Janaki" and more. Polskie Radio (Poland), 1950s. New Copy ... $12.99
Stunning early work from Polish pianist Krzysztof Komeda – an artist who would blossom to great fame in the 60s, thanks to his modern jazz material and film scores – but one who's already at the top of his game on this set of 50s recordings for Polish radio! Komeda's on piano throughout, in a number of different ensembles – including a sextet with the great Jerzy Milian on vibes and Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski on saxes – both artists who, like Komeda, would help to leave a very special imprint on the Polish scene, setting it apart from most other Eastern European jazz of the period. Most tunes are American standards, but they often have these great original arrangements, and a wonderful way of combining the musical elements – on 16 tracks that include "Caravan", "Stella By Starlight", "The Continental", "Out Of Nowhere", "That Second", "Laura", "The Man I Love", and "September Song". Mieczyslaw KoszMieczyslaw Kosz – Polish Radio Jazz Archives Vol 10 ... CD
Polskie Radio (Poland), Late 60s. New Copy ... $6.99
Here's a pianist you probably don't know at all – and one you definitely can't pronounce – but we bet you'll really be loving the music of Mieczyslaw Kosz after you've heard this set of solo performances for Polish radio from the late 60s! Kosz has a style that's somewhat conventional, but also hints at some of the new lyricism that was opening in the music of late 60s American players like Steve Kuhn or the young Keith Jarrett – kind of the immediate influence of Bill Evans, but already going somewhere else – especially with the sense of many vectors of music that seem to flow effortlessly from Mieczyslaw's hands. There's a number of original tunes in the set, but even the familiar tunes are very fresh – and the recording quality is excellent throughout. Titles include "Rosemary's Baby", "Les Parapluies De Cherbourg", "Illusion", "Before The Storm", "It's Late", "Question", "Yesterday", "Laura", and "Departure". CD

Cool chromatic sounds from guitarist Volker Kriegel – a set that mixes his own instrumentation with vibes from Wolfgang Schulter and a fair bit of percussion too! Kriegel is always great, no matter what the setting – but here he hits a unique mode, even in comparison to his other excellent sessions for the MPS label in the 70s – almost with more of a sense of color, ala John Abercrombie – but still the kind of punch we know from his powerful talents on the guitar. Schulter's a lesser-known player, but a great one – an artist we love on the electric album by Michael Naura, The Call – and working here in equally warm company next to Kriegel. Titles include "House Boat", "Are You Really Living Next To Me", "In Your Way", "Your Face Your Voice", and "Chateau Sentimental". CD

A classic set of 70s crossover deep soul – recorded in the mode of similar work by Betty Wright or Laura Lee, and done with a similar mix of raw southern vocals and tighter production! About half the work was handled by the team of Dave Crawford and Brad Shapiro – working in the Criteria Studios in Miami to give Jackie a sound that's similar to Shapiro's work with Millie Jackson. The other half was produced in Philly, by the Young Professionals team of LeBaron Taylor, Tony Bell, and Phil Hurt – who give Jackie a warm, gliding, sweet 70s Philly groove! And although you might think that this Philly/Miami split would make for a mixed bag of tunes, the album's surprisingly unified – and in a way, does plenty to link together the growing dancefloor scenes in both cities. A set that's billed as an EP, but which has more than enough funk and fuzz to top much longer soundtracks – thanks to great work from the legendary Braen/Raskovich studio combo! One of the greatest albums ever recorded by this hip vocal ensemble – set to arrangements by leader Gene Puerling, and some very swinging instrumental backings by Rob McConnell! The album's got a freer, more grooving feel than some of the group's other work – with some beautiful songs that have incredible harmonies floating and drifting about. Titles include "Dindi", "A Beautiful Friendship", "It Might As Well Be Spring", "Chelsea Morning", "Pieces Of Dreams", "Tangerine", and "Laura". LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy SmithGroovin' At Smalls' Paradise Vol 1 ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1957. New Copy ... $16.99
Jimmy Smith live was a killer – especially in the early days, when this one was recorded! Back in the late 50s, when Jimmy was shocking the world with his fantastically creative approach to the organ, Blue Note cut some of the first strong-selling live albums by following Jimmy to the clubs – where he would really let loose with some incredible work on the Hammond B3. The albums recorded that time shine far brighter than Jimmy's studio work – as Smith really opens up on nice long tracks, working with his trio that features Eddie McFadden on guitar and Donald Bailey on drums. Titles on this first volume include "After Hours", "My Funny Valentine", "Slightly Monkish", and "Laura". CD

Roost, Early 50s. Very Good- ... $36.99
Rare Roost sides from Billy Taylor – recorded with a unique combo that features Charles Mingus on bass and Marquis Foster on drums! Mingus' bass tones are extremely pronounced in the set – bolder and more aggressive than we're used to hearing with Taylor at the time – and Taylor himself is nicely open on the keys, and plays with a hard left hand touch at some points. Titles include "Laura", "All The Things You Are", "Lady Bird", "What Is This Thing Called Love", and "I'm Beginning To See The Light". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ TM JukeForward ... CD
Tru Thoughts/Ubiquity, 2006. Used ... $3.99
Forward, indeed – this this a big step up and some of the best work yet from TM Juke – his debut for Ubiquity! On Forward, the crafty producer/arranger/DJ, pushes the laptop bits and broken beats a little further out to the fringes – and focuses on the richer soul approach we love from his work with Alice Russell! The sound incorporates bits of spacey jazz, electro funk, and hip hop era thump – beat based but percolating sweetly under the vocals the rich aural tapestry! He brings out some great guest vocalists for the groovier soul sounding tunes – including Kinny of Kinny & Horne, Tru Thoughts compatriot Alice Russell, Elmore Judd and others – and the instrumental cuts are just as groovy! "Damn" feat Kinny, "Come Away" feat Sophie Faricy, "Bee's On Mars", "Arrggh!", "Skin" feat Naim, "So Good" feat Alice Russell, "Lady Garden", "Electric Chair" feat Elmore Judd, "Grounded In Fargo", "Life, Rain, Fall" and "Pencils For Dolphins". Tribe Called QuestMidnight Marauders ... LP
Jive, 1993. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 20.98
A masterpiece from prime era Tribe Called Quest! Midnight Maurauders was Tribe's third LP, and even though there were no tracks yet credited to the Ummah, this is pretty much the beginning of Tribe's transition to that sound – with the same mellow, laid back vibe as their best early material, but less of an overtly jazzy reference in their sound. Phife and Tip are still on point lyrically, and honestly, this is pretty much the last LP that Tribe dropped that's got nearly all hits and no misses on it. With the cuts "Award Tour", "Midnight", "Electric Relaxation", "Clap Your Hands", "Oh My God", "The Chase, Part II", and "Keep It Rollin". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Laurence Vanay (Jacqueline Thibault)Evening Colours (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Lion, 1976. New Copy ... $9.99
Amazing music from Laurance Vanay – actually a recording name for Jacqueline Thibault, a hell of a great keyboardist but an artist the label thought would be better off billed as a man! The sound here is halfway between the spacey experiments of Brian Eno and Cluster, and some of the more ambitious sound library work of the time – particularly those rare moments when prog artist got to do some studio work! Thibault's keyboards are wonderful – lots of Fender Rhodes mixed with Hammond and early synth – usually spun out at an instrumental level that has the tunes building slowly in these really great layers of sound – almost like a Popol Vuh soundtrack, but a lot more tuneful too. There's a fragile complexity that really makes the music special – and unlike anything we've ever heard from the European scene of the time – and titles include "Alone In The Rain", "Evening Colours", "Forgotten Moments", "Twin Cities", "Eyes Closed On The Way", "Sunshine In My Heart", and "Underwater Light Reflection". CD features a huge amount of bonus tracks – includign "Mamie"," Mop", and "Fausse Fn" – plus alternate takes of songs on the album. CD

Wendy WaldmanLove Has Got Me/Gypsy Symphony/Wendy Waldman ... CD
Warner/BGO (UK), 1973/1974/1975. New Copy 2CD ... $6.99
A trio of overlooked gems from Wendy Waldman – brought together in a single set! First up is Love Has Got Me – a hell of a solo start for singer/songwriter Wendy Waldman – a great album that should have had the lady right up there on the charts with some of her best 70s contemporaries, but which sadly never got the attention it deserved! Wendy wrote most of the material here herself, and sings with the confidence of a Laura Nyro or Carole King – but maybe with some of the jazzier inflections that Maria Muldaur or Joni Mitchell were bringing into their work – yet always with an individual spirit that makes it difficult to directly compare Waldman to anyone! Titles include "Train Song", "Gringo En Mexico", "Old Time Love", "Natural Born Fool", "Horse Dream", "Can't Come In", and "Thinking Of You". On Gypsy Symphony, Wendy Waldman's working at the Muscle Shoals studio – a place that really brings out some of the warmth, soul, and jazzy inflections in her vocals – yet all without reducing her music to another Muscle Shoals cliche! Instead, Wendy seems to transform the familiar lineup of players with a voice that's strong, proud, and one of the great overlooked female singer/songwriter talents of the 70s – on titles that include "You Got To Ride", "Studio Song", "Mad Mad Me", "The Road Song", "My Love is All I Know", and "Northwoods Man". The self-titled Wendy Waldman is one of the leanest albums ever recorded by Wendy Waldman – a set with small group backing that only seems to set Wendy's vocals even more free than before! As with her other great work of the time, there's a jazzy current to some of the singing – a mode that resonates with Joni Mitchell or Maria Muldaur – and as before, the songs are strong and proud, really great material that marks Waldman as one of the better songwriters of her generation, maybe right up there with Laura Nyro in spirit and openness – and like Nyro, very much her own woman. Titles include "Racing Boat", "Explain It", "Sundown", "Constant Companion", "Spring Is Here", "Wild Bird", and "Wings". CD

This is the kind of killer bop piano stuff that made Wallington a legend early on – collecting classic trios originally recorded for release as 10" LP in the early days of Prestige! The material features Wallington in three different groups, featuring Max Roach on drums, and either Charles Mingus, Oscar Pettiford or Curley Russell on bass. 15 titles in all including "Love Beat", "Escalating", "Laura", "Summer Rain", "Red, White & Blue", "Arriverderci", "Tenderly", "Squeezer's Breezer", "Among Friends", "Variations", "My Nephew & I", "Cuckoo Around The Clock" and "When Your Old Wedding Ring Was New". Tony Joe WhiteBlack & White ... LP
Monument, 1969. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Damn soulful work from Tony Joe White – exactly the kind of set that shows why he was so great at skirting both the borders of rock and soul music at the end of the 60s! There's a really fresh, new groove going on here – a vibe that shows an artist who's spent a decade drawing in all the best elements of Memphis and Muscle Shoals, with a slight touch of Nashville country at times too (no surprise, given the Monuments Records release of the set) – but also a more biting singer/songwriter ethos that really pushes the whole thing out to a much bigger rockish vibe! Drums are amazing – played by Jerry Carrigan with an especially funky quality on side one – and the tunes are a mix of great originals by White – many of which would be covered by others in years to come – plus some well-chosen covers, too. Tracks include "Soul Francisco", "Willie & Laura Mae Jones", "Polk Salad Annie", "Aspen Colorado", "Who's Makin Love", and "Scratch My Back". LP, Vinyl record album

Really great material from Tony Joe White – a never-issued live album recorded during his early 70s stretch at Warner Brothers – done with a raw, stripped-down vibe that offers up an even grittier take on the territory of his early albums for Monument Records! The group is pretty small on the set, and Tony's mostly playing acoustic guitar – and singing in a way that's every bit as earthy and swampy as before, but much more personal too – kind of like we're getting a chance to see a side of his personality that he'd sometimes keep hidden. Titles include "Mississippi River", "Rainy Night In Georgia", "Roosevelt & Ira Lee", "That On The Road Look", "My Kind Of Woman", "Willie & Laura Mae Jones", and a 10 minute take on "Polk Salad Annie". VariousFrom The German Jazz Festival 1964 ... CD
Be! (Germany), 1964. New Copy ... $16.99
Incredible sounds from the German Jazz Festival of 1964 – a wonderful meeting of modern talents from all over the European continent at the time – including some great work from behind the Iron Curtain too! The album features a few tracks each by a number of different groups – all of them excellent, and the sorts of players who are really under-represented in terms of available recordings – which makes this selection of tracks completely essential! The set begins with "Sopranitis" and "Birmingham Post" – played by a very cool combo with Heinz Sauer on tenor and soprano sax, Joki Freund on the same two instruments, Emil Mangelsdorff on alto, and Gunther Kornberg on alto and baritone – a four-sax group that works with just bass and drums to give them a groove, with strong solos from all players. Next up is the fantastic Zagreb Jazz Quartet – with Bosko Petrovic on vibes – playing "In Walked Bud" and "Degressia" – plus a version of "Bluesette" with a guest appearance by Sven Asmussen. Tenor player Karl Drevo (Drewo) leads a quintet with trumpeter Maffy Falay and pianist Bora Rokovic – on a long reading of "Save Your Love For Me". The legendary quartet of saxophonist Klaus Doldinger is next – his great group with Ingfried Hoffmann on Hammond, Peter Trunk on bass, and Klaus Weiss on drums – with guest work by Rolf Kuhn on tenor and Inge Brandenberg on vocals – on the titles "Waltz Of The Jive Cats", "What's The Matter Daddy", and "Groovin In Berlin". Last up is one of our favorite groups of the time – the quintet of pianist Michael Naura, which also features Wolfgang Schluter on vibes and Peter Reinke on alto – on "Rainy Clouds" and "Rhythm A Ning". RPM (UK), Late 50s/1960s. New Copy 4CD ... $32.99
An amazing look at the world of New York music in the late 50s and early 60s – and a set that's got a much more urban vibe than you might guess from the cover! The vibe here is partly hinted at by the Broadway address in the title – as most of these tracks come from a time and stretch when the indie pop machine was going full steam in the US – strongly urged on by the success of 50s R&B and early rock hits – served up here in a stunning mix of really unusual, really groovy singles – most of which go way way beyond the too-reissued Brill Building music of the time! Instead, the bulk of this work comes from the President label – and other imprints like Joy, Seville, and others – all brought together with a huge booklet of notes that follows the 107 titles in the box on a track-by-track basis – all with the completeness of an Ace/Kent compilation. There's way too many titles here to list – but we can say that the set features work from Mort Garson, Floyd Morris, Judy & Joyce, Scott Carol, Joey & The Twisters, Bill Roxy, Curtis Knight, The Four Coins, Larry Banks, Millie Foster, Terry & The Tunisians, Laura Lynn, Scott Bedford Four, Ernie Maresca, Billy Duke, Billy Butterfield, Susan Lynne, Sleepy King, The Hideaways, Earl Wade, The Imaginations, Wallie Hawkins, Ronnie Mitchell, and lots lots more! Kent (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
If you only know Van McCoy from his big disco hit of the 70s, then you've got plenty to learn – because the man was very active in soul music during the decade before – a great singer, and a hugely productive songwriter whose tunes provided material for many other big names of his time! Van's tunes often have a great mix of soul and sophistication – a classy approach that's sometimes dubbed uptown soul, and which balances deeply heartfelt vocals with stepping grooves and just the right subtle use of larger backings – all in a way that perfectly enhances the special qualities of the lyrics. That approach is used often here, amidst a few other cuts that echo northern or deep soul modes – all brought together with the usual fantastic Ace Records notes, packaging, and sound quality. Titles include "Hard Way To Go" by The Exciters, "You're Gonna Make Me Love You" by Sandi Sheldon, "Lost & Found" by Kenny Carlton, "If I Don't Love You" by The Choice Four, "Mister DJ" by Francine Barker, "Touch My Heart" by The Vonnettes, "Just In The Nick Of Time" by Toni Lamarr, "Abracadabra" by Erma Franklin, "Baby I Miss You" by The Spellbinders, "I Wanna Love You So Bad" by Bobby Reed, "The Sweetest Thing This Side Of Heaven" by Chris Bartley, "This Is It" by Melba Moore, "Baby Don't Change Your Mind" by Gladys Knight & The Pips, "Memories & Souvenirs" by Laura Greene, and "Show A Little Appreciation" by The Ad Libs. Cultures Of Soul, 1980s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $23.99 27.98
A great look at the bright world of female soul in Japan during the 80s – a time when the nation was hitting some of its greatest heights of the postwar years – and was coming up with a magical musical groove to follow! While disco reigned in American clubs in the late 70s, the style really took off in Tokyo during the following decade – maybe mixed a bit with European and 80s club styles, but still unabashedly as upbeat and bubbling as American work of previous years – all to showcase a range of female singers whose style really matches the groove! The music takes off a bit from that shift into soul by Japanese jazz singers in the 70s – but is much farther than that mode overall, especially once the beats and keyboards get going. The package does a great job of being faithful to this legacy – and includes notes on each song and artist, along with album covers too. Titles include "Wanna Kiss" by Hitomi Tohyama, "Dancin" by Junko Ohashi, "Dress Down" by Kaoru Akimoto, "I'm In Love" by Aru Takamura, "Broken Eyes" by Mariko Tone, "TNT" by Rie Murakami, "Love Is A Work Of Mind" by Ra Mu, "Mystical Composer" by Kikuchi Momoko, and "Sky Restaurant" by Yumi Seino. Invictus/Demon (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $19.99
Massive soul from the start of the 70s – some of the heaviest cuts ever put together by the Holland Dozier Holland team – all issued on their own family of labels after the trio split with Motown! The work here is way deeper than their Motown sides – maybe more in the territory of Norman Whitfield, Westbound Records, and some of the other great work coming out in that second wave of soul from Detroit – more progressive and more righteous overall, often with more emphasis on the bottom groove too! As you'd guess from the cover, the tunes all appeared on the HDH labels Invictus, Hot Wax, and Music Merchant – and titles include "Cheeba" by The 8th Day, "New Breed Kinda Woman" by Lamont Dozier, "Love Factory" by Eloise Laws, "Sliced Tomatoes" by The Just Brothers, "Crumbs Off The Table" by Laura Lee, "Working On A Building Of Love" by Chairmen Of The Board, "Unhooked Generation" by Freda Payne, "Sunday Morning People" by Harrison Kennedy, "Don't Leave Me (inst)" by Lamont Dozier, "Breakdown" by Parliament, "I Shall Not Be Moved" by Barrino Brothers, "Sittin On A Time Bomb" by Lee Charles, "The World We Live In" by The Politicians, "I'm Bugging Your Phone (part 1)" by Smith Connection, "I Got It (part 1)" by New York Port Authority, and "Want Ads" by Honey Cone. An excellent and oft-overlooked 50s session from Duke – recorded in Chicago as a one-off for the Bethlehem label, and done with a lush, rich sound that's really tremendous! The group's nicely restrained and very moody – playing here in a mellow late nite mode that offers a good focus on the best horn soloists in the group, yet which also really hangs together perfectly from the slow-moving and eerie tone of the rest of the group. Damn, Jimmy's always great! Like Holmes, McGriff has a real talent for taking familiar numbers – like "The Way You Look Tonight", "Laura", and "Moon River" – and making them swing with a very soulful edge! Gregory Porter live at London's Royal Albert Hall – backed not only by his excellent core band, but also the 60+ piece London Studio Orchestra – really pulling off a masterstroke in the way he can bring out all the lush promise of the orchestral setting while staying rooted in intimate soul! Credit conductor and arranger Vince Mendoza for the subtle finesse of the orchestra – never getting too big and lush for the sake of bigness – but it's the warmth of Gregory Porter's voice at the center that gives this such a real vibe, steering free of nostalgia on songs from his Nat King Cole & Me project while bringing grander instrumentation, but no less intimate of a vibe to songs from Porter's own songbook. Quite possibly the greatest Larry Young album of the post-Blue Note years – and a massive bit of funk that totally redefines his sound! Larry's working here with his hip group Fuel – an ensemble that features Laura Logan on lead vocals, giving the tunes a real focus through her lyrics – and letting them pack a bit more punch too, since her voice sounds a lot like Betty Davis at the time! Larry's keyboards are forceful, but never too over the top – and he's notched things down a bit to focus on the overall groove of the set – still keeping things adventurous on the keys, but also working in a mode that's much more heavily jazz funk! The album's one of THE essential electric jazz sets of the 70s – and features the classic break cut "Turn Out the Lights" – plus other great tracks that include "Floating", "Fuel for the Fire", "I Ching", "H+J=B (Hustle + Jam = Bread)" and "New York Electric Street Music". A great set of tracks that's billed as music "you can almost dance to" – and which hits this sweet midtempo groove throughout – filled with female vocals, and served up in a wicked soulful style of AOR! The collection's an excellent all-girl companion to the previous Too Slow To Disco sets – and may well be the best so far, as there's a current of soul that maybe didn't show up that strongly before – as the singers unabashedly go for deeper modes in some of their vocals, while the instrumental side of the tracks glow nicely with sweet keyboards, riffing guitars, and just the right touch of slightly funky rhythms! There's plenty of gems here we might have overlooked otherwise – definitely the best side of the "yacht rock" revival of the past few years – and tracks include "You Can Do It" by Evie Sands, "Be Here In The Morning" by Renee Geyer, "Gotta Lotta" by Lauren Wood, "It's The Falling In Love" by Carol Baker Sayer, "Crazy" by Valerie Carter, "Isn't It Something" by Franne Golde, "Opening Up To You" by Laura Allen, "Temptation" by Leah Kunkel, "Disco Tech" by Carole King, "Dance The Night Away" by Doris Abrahams, and "Take Me With You" by Lyn Christopher.
