William ParkerI Plan To Stay A Believer – The Inside Songs Of Curtis Mayfield ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2010. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
A really unusual album from bassist William Parker – an artist whose musical world is usually quite far from the 70s soul of Curtis Mayfield – even though both Mayfield and Parker are pretty darn righteous individuals! Yet here, Curtis and William come together in a stunning way – as Parker reworks classic Mayfield songs, and transforms them into fantastic vehicles for spiritual jazz expression! The group has a warmly collaborative vibe, and energy that feels like some lost indie jazz project from the 70s – all held together by Parker's bold acoustic bass and masterful leadership – in a lineup that includes vocals from Leena Conquest, piano from Dave Burrell, saxes and flute from Sabir Mateen, tenor and soprano from Darryl Foster, trumpet from Lewis Barnes, drums from Hamid Drake, and poetry and voice from Amari Baraka. With a lineup like that, you can already guess the vibe – and we can promise that the whole is even better than you might have hoped! Titles include "I Plan To Stay A Believer", "If There's A Hell Below", "This Is My Country", "People Get Ready/The Inside Song", "It's Alright", "Freddie's Dead", "New World Order", and a great 17 minute take on "We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue". William ParkerVoices Fall From The Sky (3CD set) ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2018. New Copy 3CD ... $14.99 29.98
A really wonderful collection of music from the legendary bassist William Parker – and one that finally brings a light to an under-illuminated side of his talents – his work with different singers over his long and creative career, all collected together here in a great 3CD set! Make no mistake – this isn't a "best of", or anything like that – as a good deal of music appears here for the first time ever, and lots more of the tracks are from albums that have long vanished from the record racks – which makes the whole thing almost like a new album from Parker overall. Players include Parker on bass, Yuko Fujiyama and Eri Yamamoto on piano, Rob Brown on alto, Steve Swell on trombone, and a number of others – including nearly a full disc with music by Parker's Orchestra – and as you'd imagine, the mood and style varies a bit from track to track, but is all wonderfully tied together by Parker's detailed notes inside. Singers include Leena conquest, Ernie Odom, Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay, Lisa Skolov, Ellen Christi, Mola Sylla, Andrea Wolper, Fay Victor, and Omar Payano – and the set is an incredible testimony to Parker's great talents. Eri Yamamoto & Choral ChameleonGoshu Ondo Suite ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2019. Used ... $6.99
One of the most beautiful albums we've ever heard from pianist Eri Yamamoto – in large part because of the presence of the Choral Cameleon vocal group! The mix of piano and voice is wonderful – haunting and powerful, in a way that reminds us of some of the best Vince Guaraldi experiments of this type – but with a sharper edge, as you might guess from the piano of Yamamoto – and support from David Ambrosio on bass and Ikuo Takeuchi on drums! Sometimes the voices rise high and proud – as in a Max Roach jazz-with-voices album – other times they drift dreamily, providing more of a subtle ascendant current to the lines of the piano. Either way is great to our ears – a really wonderful record – and tracks feature the long "Goshu Ondo Suite", plus "Echo Of Echo". CD

✨✧ William Parker/In Order To SurviveLive/Shapeshifter ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2019. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
William Parker works here with his excellent In Order To Survive quartet – a fantastic lineup that features Rob Brown on alto sax, Cooper-Moore on piano, and Hamid Drake on drums – a very fluid, very well-matched group who are able to follow Parker in his farthest musical explorations! Tracks are all long, and relatively free – but as with Parker's bass over the decades, there's always this sense of inherent logic that comes through – possibly his strong spirit which unites the players, even indirectly – but also just a proud presence that never seems to let us down. The music was all recorded live on a single night at Shapeshifter Lab in Brooklyn – and titles include "Demons Lining The Halls Of Justice", "Eternity", "In Order To Survive", "Newark", and the long "Eternal Is The Voice Of Love" suite. A powerful set from tenor sax great David S Ware – his Oncept album – recorded live at Brooklyn's Systems Two Studio! These are intense pieces, but never overbearing. . He's backed by William Parker on bowed and thumping bass, and Warren Smith on drums, tympani and percussion – and they work together incredibly. A celebration of Ware's 50th year as a musician. Includes "Book Of Krittika", "Wheel Of Life", "Celestial", "Desire Worlds", "Astral Earth", "Bardo", "Savaka", "Anagami" and "Vata". CD

✨✧ David S WareBalance – Vision Festival XV+ ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sax great David S Ware leading a masterful trio featuring William Parker on bass and Warren Smith on drums – live at NYC's Vision Festival in 2010, plus some incendiary 2009 studio outtakes from the too brief period these three were in action together! Amazingly, given how deft their interplay is throughout these recordings, the trio only came together a few times, resulting in the energetic 3 part suite that makes up the first half, balanced out by outtakes from their Onecept studio sessions that make up the rest. Excellent work we're happy is finally seeing release! Includes "Vision Suite 2010" (Parts 1, 2 & 3), "Kama", "Virtue", "Bodhisattva" and "Gnavah". CD

✨✧ David S WareTheatre Garonne 2008 ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2008. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic live set from the great David S Ware – recorded at a key point in his career, when he was moving away from his longtime work with Matthew Shipp on piano, and embracing a new group with Joe Morris on guitar! Morris is wonderful here – really at his best, and driven on by the presence of Ware, bassist William Parker, and drummer Warren Smith – to levels that make his music completely essential, and every bit as intense as Ware on the tenor saxophone! The pairing is completely sublime – even more powerful on record than you can imagine – and the never-issued concert performance features the long tracks "Durga", "Reflection", "Crossing Samsara", and "Namah". Zdenek LiskaIkarie XB-1 ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1963. New Copy ... $22.99
Fantastic sounds from outer space – a electro-acoustic masterpiece, put together for a Czech sci-fi film of the 60s – but done in a mode that stretches far out into space beyond the world of cinema! The music is stark and dark at some times – almost with an electro-shock approach – but other moments are beautifully tuneful, too – and as things pick up, there's even a few jazzier passages that are similar to Peter Thomas' great work on the Raumpatrouille soundtrack! This one's still a lot spookier than that one – and some of the timings of the music have this wonderful crash-up vibe, which is pretty darn unique. Titles include "The Tiger's Breath", "Dark Star", "Do Not Eat The Fruit", "EVA Will Teach You", "Surveillance On Standby/Alpha Centauri", "Sunflower For A New Star", "Voyage To The End", and "The White Planet". LP, Vinyl record album
