Farmers By Nature (Cleaver, Parker, Taborn)Out Of This World's Distortions ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2011. Used ... $12.99
Drummer Gerald Cleaver, bassist William Parker, and pianist Craig Taborn team up as Farmers By Nature – a nice improvisational trio set for the always fertile Aum Fidelity label! The set starts out with a sparely furnished, truly elegiac "For Fred Anderson" – a really strong piece that's hard to top – but the rest of the record is nearly as great. From aggressive interplay to spare beauty, it works on more different levels. Other titles include "Tait's Traced Traits" (at nearly 20 minutes), "Out Of This World's Distortion Grow Aspens And Other Beautiful Things", "Sir Snacktray Speaks", "Cutting's Gait" and "Mud, Mapped". Joe MorrisToday On Earth ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2009. Used ... $6.99
A mighty impressive quartet set led by guitarist Joe Morris – who really does his thing with a proficient intensity – ratcheting up the tension as it goes along. There's a melodicism at the core that somehow keeps it all in a sweet spot, but Morris and his players aren't resting in it, making for an exciting listen. Very dynamic stuff, balancing improvisation and a linear vibe masterfully! Players include Jim Hobbs on alto, Timo Shanko on bass and Luther Gray on drums. Titles include "Backbone", "Animal", "Today On Earth", "Observer", "Embarrassment Of Riches", "Ashes" and "Imaginary Solutions". CD

Joe MorrisWildlife ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2009. Used ... $6.99
A great collaboration between bassist Joe Morris, drummer Luther Gray, and reedman Peter Cancura – all coming together here in searing trio formation that reminds us a lot of the energy of the ESP avant generation! Gray's drums have a nice degree of focus and force – never as loose as might be by another player in such a setting – and Cancura blows both tenor and alto, the former with a hauntingly soulful sound that echoes out nicely in the spare format of the record. Morris' brooding bass is a constant presence throughout – and the album features four long tracks, "Geomantic", "Thicket", "Crow", and "Nettle". CD

Aum Fidelity, 2012. Used ... $9.99
A strong trio set from guitarist Joe Morris, bassist William Parker and drummer Gerald Cleaver – their first together – and it's an exciting one! Recorded live at The Stone, in NYC , it includes a pair of great 25+ minute pieces – "Exosphere" and "Thermosphere – plus the shorter, but plenty spacious Troposphere" and "Mesosphere". It's great stuff! It's all about the free trio dynamic here. Each player asserts himself throughout – in an energetic, but never too far out manner. CD

Aum Fidelity, 2021. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
This album's got a really fitting title – as the whole thing feels like it's ready to take off into the heavens, right from the very first note – driven on strongly by the drums of Gerald Cleaver, who's a perfect match for the bold basswork of William Parker – as the pair work together with the searing tones of Ava Mendoza on guitar! Most tracks have a very fast-moving, dynamic sensibility – Parker and Cleaver moving together as if they're joined at the waist – so that even some of the freer flights of fuzz from Mendoza don't get in the way of the highly rhythmic energy of the record. A stunning new setting for the genius of Parker – which never seems to end at all! Titles include "Tabasco", "Mayan Space Station", "Domingo", and "Canyons Of Light". CD features the bonus tracks "Rocas Rojas" and "The Wall Tumbles Down". CD

William ParkerMeditation/Resurrection ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2017. Used 2 CDs ... $17.99
Bassist William Parker in two different settings, but both served up here with a very unified feel! The material was all recorded on a single day, with a core trio that features Parker on bass, Hamid Drake on drums, and Rob Brown on alto – a group whose energy you can really feel building up right from the core, especially in the interplay between Parker and Drake, a pair who only seem to get better together over the years! The first half features trumpeter Jalalu Kalvert Nelson – whose soaring sense of pride really adds a new dimension to the music – this righteous quality that opens up new channels of beauty when he steps in. The second half features pianist Cooper-Moore, instead of the trumpeter – and his tones are maybe more introspective, and produce a similar shift in the music, especially in the way Parker shapes his notes. This change really deepens our understanding of the trio on both sides – and shows just how adaptive they are to each other. Titles include "Horace Silver Part 2", "Things Falling Apart", "Give Me Back My Drum", "Rodney's Resurrection", "Urban Disruption", and "Orange Winter Flower". CD

Centering/Aum Fidelity, 2021. New Copy 10CD set ... $79.99 89.99
An incredible collection of work from the legendary bassist William Parker – not a package of older material, but a full ten albums' worth of new recordings done expressly for this set – showing Parker not only as a budding multi-instrumentalist over the space of the past few years – but also a very collaborative composer, with a much wider range of expression than anyone might have guessed a few decades ago! Parker is still a completely essential part of the avant jazz underground, but he's also emerging as a mature statesman – able to bridge both scenes and generations with material like this – a hugely collaborative effort that features contributions from Lisa Sokolov, Kyoko Kitamura, Ellen Christi, Jalalu Kalvert Nelson, Eri Yamamoto, Raina Sokolov Gonzalez, Andrea Wolper, the Universal Tonality String Quartet, and other groups as well. Each CD features a different side of Parker's creative genius – and together, the package is maybe the richest statement of his powers we've ever heard! CD

✨✧ William ParkerPainter's Winter ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2021. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
William Parker's given us some tremendous music over the years, but this album may be one of our favorites of the bunch – as the set's got this back-to-basics approach that has Parker working in trio formation with Hamid Drake on drums and Daniel Carter on reeds – all with this effortless sense of fluid spontaneity that comes through right from the very first note! The interplay between the musicians is fantastic – free, but always very soulful and directed too – and Carter shifts between trumpet, alto, tenor, clarinet, and flute – making these really magical sounds that are sometimes echoed by Parker on trombonium and shakuhachi. The whole album's brilliant – and features the long songs "Happiness", "Painted Scarf", "Groove 77", and "Painter's Winter". CD also features the track "A Curley Russell". CD

William Parker/In Order To SurviveLive/Shapeshifter ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2019. Used 2CD ... $15.99
William Parker works here with his excellent In Order To Survive quartet – a fantastic lineup that features Rob Brown on alto sax, Cooper-Moore on piano, and Hamid Drake on drums – a very fluid, very well-matched group who are able to follow Parker in his farthest musical explorations! Tracks are all long, and relatively free – but as with Parker's bass over the decades, there's always this sense of inherent logic that comes through – possibly his strong spirit which unites the players, even indirectly – but also just a proud presence that never seems to let us down. The music was all recorded live on a single night at Shapeshifter Lab in Brooklyn – and titles include "Demons Lining The Halls Of Justice", "Eternity", "In Order To Survive", "Newark", and the long "Eternal Is The Voice Of Love" suite. William Parker/Raining On The MoonGreat Spirit ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2015. Used ... $11.99
Some of the most soulful music we've ever heard from bassist William Parker – a set that puts his mighty instrument to use at the core of a sextet who move with a sound that's perhaps a bit more straight ahead than some of Parker's usual music – but no less spiritual at all! The group's got a key element in the vocals of singer Leena Conquest – an artist we've always liked on Parker's other records, but who really has a righteous power here, very much in a classic 70s mode – soaring out front on her lyrics with a quality that we'd reserve for a rare few jazz singers – like Carmen Lundy or Dee Dee Bridgewater! And like both of them, she gels perfectly with the rest of the group – which includes great work from Rob Brown on alto, Lewis Barnes on trumpet, Eri Yamamoto on piano, and Hamid Drake on drums. Parker is sublime throughout – sounding as bold and righteous as ever – and titles include "Bowl Of Stone Around The Sun", "Feet Music", "Dodson Ngoni Blues", "Great Spirit", and "Prayer Improv". CD

David S WareLive in New York 2010 ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2017. Used 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
Gigantic genius from the late David S Ware – heard here in an unreleased performance from the final years of his time – at a time when his saxophone greatness was still very much in full flower! The group is a trio – with William Parker on bass and Warren Smith on drums – and Ware really dominates on both tenor and a Buchler straight alto sax, which he plays with an amazing sound – really spinning out these incredible solos that are full of soul and imagination, with that special quality that first made us fall in love with his music many decades back. At his best – as he is here – Ware can improvise freely, yet still find this spiritual core to guide him forward – which is very much the case on the two long performances included in this double-length package! Reedman Daniel Carter's in some great company here – a trio that features the bass of William Parker and piano of Matthew Shipp – both bold musical partners that really give the album a lot of depth! Shipp is especially great, and at times really seems to dominate the proceedings with his energy – that non-stop spiral of constant creation that has made his work in recent years so rewarding – balanced with Parker's always strong command of the bass, and shifting sounds from Carter – who blows flute, clarinet, tenor, alto, and soprano sax – as well as a bit of trumpet. The album features a live performance of the title suite, "Seraphic Light" – divided into three sections. CD

✨✧ Whit Dickey & The Tao QuartetsPeace Planet/Box Of Light ... CD
Aum Fidelity, 2019. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Drummer Whit Dickey works here in two different quartets – both with strong work from Rob Brown on alto sax, but also with very different sounds – given the lineup of each group! The first quartet is on the Peace Planet half of the record – an amazing combo with Matthew Shipp on piano and William Parker on bass – both really reignited in recent years, and sounding tremendous with their longstanding sense of interplay – almost a unit in itself, but cut through with sharper lines from Brown's alto, and given an unusual sense of pulse by Dickey's drums! A different group plays on the Box Of Light half of the record, with a very different vibe – as the lineup features Steve Swell on trombone and Michael Bisio on bass – both musicians whose approach really changes things up. Swell's horn really competes with Brown's upfront, and Bisio's bass is maybe a bit more elliptical than Parker – very open and up and down the scale, in a way that seems to push Dickey's drums as well. Peace Planet titles include "Ancient Monument", "Suite For DSW", "Blossom Time", and "Seventh Sun" – and Box Of Light titles include "Eye Opener", "Ethereality", "Rotation Steps", and "Jungle Suite". Aum Fidelity/Centering, 2012. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The essence of Duke Ellington – but in the hands of William Parker, it's a very different thing than you might expect! The group here is larger than usual for Parker – a great ensemble used in ways that definitely echo some of Ellington's more inventive scoring, especially his mature use of tone and color – yet both the solos and ensemble moments go way way farther than anything the Duke might have imagined – all the bold, righteous brilliance that we've come to love in Parker's own recordings – focused back on one of his greatest inspirations. The lineup is quite impressive – as musicians include Roy Campbell on trumpet, Ras Moshe on tenor and soprano, Rob Brown and Darius Jones on alto, Sabir Mateen on clarinet and tenor, Steve Swell on trombone, Dave Burrell on piano, Hamid Drake on drums, and Parker himself on bass – and titles include "Take The Coltrane", "Essence Of Sophisticated Lady/Sophisticated Lady", "Caravan", "Essence Of Ellington", "Take The A Train/Ebony Interlude", and "Portrait Of Louisiana". Aum Fidelity, 2010. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really unusual album from bassist William Parker – an artist whose musical world is usually quite far from the 70s soul of Curtis Mayfield – even though both Mayfield and Parker are pretty darn righteous individuals! Yet here, Curtis and William come together in a stunning way – as Parker reworks classic Mayfield songs, and transforms them into fantastic vehicles for spiritual jazz expression! The group has a warmly collaborative vibe, and energy that feels like some lost indie jazz project from the 70s – all held together by Parker's bold acoustic bass and masterful leadership – in a lineup that includes vocals from Leena Conquest, piano from Dave Burrell, saxes and flute from Sabir Mateen, tenor and soprano from Darryl Foster, trumpet from Lewis Barnes, drums from Hamid Drake, and poetry and voice from Amari Baraka. With a lineup like that, you can already guess the vibe – and we can promise that the whole is even better than you might have hoped! Titles include "I Plan To Stay A Believer", "This Is My Country", "People Get Ready/The Inside Song", "Ya He Hey Ya", "New World Order", and a great 17 minute take on "We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue". Aum Fidelity, 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great improvised performance between these two longtime partners – music recorded over a decade before its release, but still at a time when both Matthew Shipp and David S Ware had been working together for years! The material is very unstructured – just two long parts of a performance titled "Tao Flow", plus a shorter encore – and Ware is amazing in the way he spins out these long, soulful lines on tenor – free, but never too much so, and always with that deeply spiritual sound that makes us love his music so much. Shipp is maybe a bit more angular, and sometimes obtuse – but that contrast also really highlights the individuality of the performers – without some of that lack of identity that can occur in an improvised passage. A great addition to the catalog of both players – and an excellent reminder of how well they can work together! CD

Sharply angular sounds from this very hip trio – a record that really grabs you right at the start, then makes sure you're paying attention all the way through! The group's a particularly great setting for the piano of Matthew Shipp – who maybe reminds us here why we found him so great in the first place – and Whit Dickey's drums are sometimes a masterpiece of understatement, sometimes a bold force of power! Mat Maneri's viola might get lost in the mix, if things were balanced poorly – but there's some key contributions from his sliding sounds that really shape the performance.
