The mid 80s... when a song like this passed for politics in music! Forget the stupid message lyrics, though, and remember that Hardcastle cracked a lot of scenes with the cut – forging kind of a pop-political-street beat kind of groove. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Gene ClarkNo Other ... LP
Asylum/4AD, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A pretty amazing effort from country rock progenitor Gene Clark! This one blends breezy songcraft that's not too far off from his previous couple of great solo albums – rustic harmonies and memorable lyricism flavored by acoustic guitars – with far more deft studio touches such as synths and densely layered backing vocals. There really was no other album in '74 like No Other, and initially it had the poor reception to show for it! It has a somewhat laidback and laconic vibe overall – infused with that Cali country rock groove that Gene helped invent – yet the production is richly produced on an epic scale, an effort that seems to seek flat out perfection. A couple years later, California fellow travelers would utilize a similar approach and sell LPs by the ton. Here's hoping those groups bought Gene a dinner or two to thank him for the inspiration! Includes "Life's Greatest Fool", "Silver Raven", "No Other", "Some Misunderstanding", "The True One", "Lady Of The North", "Strength Of Strings" and "From A Silver Phial". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tom WaitsHeart Of Saturday Night ... CD
Asylum, 1974. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An early one from Waits – his second album – and it's a great one! Like a lot of his early oeuvre, this is a kind of like a street-savvy, hipster cabaret affair, with less of the eccentricity that would reveal itself later in his career. Still a great record though, rendered with a Bukowski-esque salt of the earth palette. Includes "Fumblin' With The Blues", "Please Call Me, Baby", "Diamonds On My Windshield", "New Coat Of Paint", "The Heart Of Saturday Night", "Drunk On The Moon", "Shiver Me Timbers", "San Diego Serenade", "Semi Suite", "Depot, Depot", and "The Ghosts Of Saturday Night (After Hours At Napoleone's Pizza House)". ✨✧ Danny KortchmarInnuendo ... LP
Asylum, 1980. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A surprisingly nice record from one time Fug and session guitar giant Danny "The Kootch" Kortchmar – done for Asylum with a sound that moves from punchy power pop, to more measured singer songwriter stuff, in the vein of Jackson Browne and Warren Zevon – both of whom the Kootch had worked for. As was the case with other Asylum records at the end of the 70s/start of the 80s, the production can be a little too much of the era, but the songs are really strong and Danny just doesn't get enough recognition for his work as a headliner. Solid and tuneful! Titles include "You And What Army", "Lost In The Shuffle", "Killer's Kiss", "Ghost Of Errol Flynn", "Endless Sleep", "Innuendo", "Ego Tripper", "I Starred In That Movie", "Hair Of The Dog" and "When The Eagle Flies". Mookish bombast from The Dictactors – heavy rock, fist clenching anthems, poker-faced parodies of love songs and keyboard peppered songs about a body covered in scabs. No sir, there will never be another Dictators! These guys should have been on kid's lunchboxes and Kiss should been dropped by their labels and consigned to cult infamy, that's what we think. Includes the world's first heavy metal cover of Iggy & The Stooges "Search & Destroy" that we know of, plus "Exposed", "Heartache", "Science Gone Too Far!", "Sleepin With The TV On", "Hey Boys" and more. Gary NumanPleasure Principle – The First Recordings ... CD
Beggars Banquet, 1979. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 18.99
A special version of this classic! Where would electronic pop be without Gary Numan's "Cars"? Alongside Kraftwerk's classic 80s albums and Yellow Magic Orchestra's first LP, this album by Gary Numan ranks as one of the most essential synth driven LPs on a creative level – and it rightly brought the sound to the masses at the time, too – thanks to a brilliant pop sensibility, awash with robotic tones that will forever vindicate 80s new wave. This "first recordings" set expands the album to double-length – with demo versions of "Cars", "Films", "Complex", "ME", "Conversation", "Tracks", "Metal", "Airlane", "Observer", and "Conversation" – plus 2009 remasters of "Random", "Asylum", "Oceans", and "Photograph" – and BBC Peel Session versions of "Cars", "Films", "Conversation", and "Airlane". Rain ParadeEmergency Third Rail Power Trip (red & yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Enigma/Real Gone, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
An undisputed treasure from the early 80s west coast scene – a trippy little record that was one of the shining jewels in the new psych underground – quite a shift from the LA hardcore sound of a few years before! Yet unlike some of their contemporaries, Rain Parade were hardly copping any sort of easy retro modes – as their approach here is leaner, maybe a bit colder, and almost influenced by post-punk styles in the same way that some of the better UK bands were at the time – almost as if there was a synchronous explosion of fuzzy energy between the group and the Creation Records generation to come. The whole thing holds up wonderfully over the years – maybe even more so, given the passage of time, and the legions of other groups who never made the music this well. Titles include "Talking In My Sleep", "I Look Around", "This Can't Be Today", "Look At Merri", "Saturday's Asylum", and "Kaleidoscope". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Wynton MarsalisJ Mood ... LP
Columbia, 1986. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wynton Marsalis is working in lean quartet formation here – no sax from brother Branford, whose own star was rising – and instead lots more room to really stretch out on his own languid lines on trumpet! The rest of the quartet features Marcus Roberts on piano, Robert Hurst on bass, and Jeff Watts on drums – all of whom work in subtle ways to match Marsalis' shadings in sound – a rich tapestry of colors and tones that lies somewhere in a space between early Miles and modern Freddie Hubbard. Titles include "J Mood", "Insane Asylum", "After", "Much Later", "Skain's Domain", and "Melodique". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Donald BrownSources Of Inspiration (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Muse, 1990. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
D An inspiring set from pianist Donald Brown– working here in a group that features some especially nice work from Gary Bartz and Eddie Henderson! Bartz plays soprano and alto sax, Henderson trumpet and flugelhorn – and both players fill the album with soulful colors and well-spun solos – stretching out majestically to give the set a great deal of power, and really match Brown's imaginative compositions. Donald's piano lines are great too, and rhythmic support is from Buster Williams on bass and Carl Allen on drums – the last two points in a star of a quintet for the session. Titles include "Capteown Ambush", "Overtaken By A Moment", "New York", "Phineas", "The Human Impersonator",and "Do We Have To Say Goodbye". CD includes 2 bonus tracks; "Embraceable You" & "Insane Asylum". CD
