Johan Lindstrom SeptettOn The Asylum ... LP
Moserobie (Sweden), 2021. New Copy ... $24.99
A really great change in the music of Swedish guitarist Johan Lindstrom – music that expands the vision of his previous record, and also explores some more song-based territory – while still allowing for lots of musical contributions from other players we love on the Moserobie label! You know something's different when Elvis Costello steps in on the first track for a bit of spoken lyrics to a song he wrote with Lindstrom – and things continue to move in other ways throughout – with vocals from Sofie Livebrandt on two tracks, amidst work from Jonas Kullhammar on saxes and flute, Per Texas Johansson on clarinet and tenor, Jesper Nordenstrom on piano and organ, Mats Aleklint on trombone Torbjorn Zetterberg on bass, and Konrad Agnas on drums! Most tracks are relatively short, but work together well – and there are definitely moments of improvisation amidst some of the more structured elements of the record – on titles that include "What What", "Homeward", "Trombone Interlude", "Edwards Chacone", "Music Orbit Box", "Septet Serenade", "Echoes Across The Dunes", and "Worms Of Underground". ✨✧ Marvin Pontiac (John Lurie)Asylum Tapes (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Northern Spy, 1999. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The "Asylum" here isn't a reference to Asylum Records – that powerhouse of singer/songwriter material – but a fictional allusion to the mental institution in which this music was supposedly created – yet another slice of the mysterious puzzle of Marvin Pontiac, the alter ego of actor/musician/singer John Lurie! Leaving that joke aside, and forgetting all the fake mystery that Lurie puts around the project – the music is actually pretty good, and has the wonderful vocal style of Lurie in character turned to spare, moody songs – almost as if Lurie's hitting Tom Waits territory, and we mean that in a very good way. LP, Vinyl record album
(First-ever vinyl release!)

✨✧ Andrew GoldLonely Boy – The Asylum Years Anthology (6CD & DVD set) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 6CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of material from 70s pop genius Andrew Gold – four full albums, plus rare material, and a bonus DVD too! Andrew Gold's got a sharp, compressed approach to his music – a style that was maybe learned in the UK production years of both glam and the birth of ELO – which turns out to be a wonderful way to deliver Gold's sharply-written tunes, and warmly captivating vocals – a mode that's maybe got a bit more bite than mainstream AOR, but which also still fits nicely in the same territory too – maybe a bit of the same appeal as The Raspberries. The set features all the four albums issued over here by Asylum Records – Andrew Gold, What's Wrong With This Picture, All This & Heaven Too, and Whirlwind – two of which have bonus tracks here – plus a CD5 of 14 more outtakes and unreleased tracks, each from the sessions for the albums – and CD6 of 18 more live recordings from 1977 and 1978. DVD features 6 full promotional videos, and 13 more performances from the BBC show The Old Grey Whistle Test! CD

John PrinePink Cadillac (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Asylum/Rhino, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 23.99
John Prine's got a slightly more stylish look on the cover here, and the record's got a slightly more stylish sound as well – production by Knox and Jerry Phillips (sons of Sun Records' Sam Phillips) – who set up Prine's amazing vocals and songs with a bit of a Tennessee vibe – not really country rock, as the album's very much John's own – but a slightly different feel than his previous work. There's also a slight touch of the Sun Records history here – guitar from Billy Lee Riley on one cut, and a few tunes that aren't Prine's own – but the whole thing still comes together at a level that's right up there with his best 70s classics. Tracks include "Chinatown", "Automobile", "Killing The Blues", "Saigon", "Cold War", "Side Of The Road", "How Lucky", and a remake of "Ubangi Stomp". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Alain BellaicheSea Fluorescent ... LP
Asylum/Souffle Continu (France), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Rare funky fusion by this overlooked French guitarist – recorded in New York with a really unusual group, and in a setting that has Alain Bellaiche providing a bit of vocals too! The sound is great – different than some of the more jamming rock fusion of the European scene at mid 70s – maybe in part because the keyboardist on the set is John Hicks, an artist who doesn't usually do records like this – and who brings in some wonderful elements on acoustic and electric piano, and a bit of organ too! There's also all sorts of great percussion touches from the enigmatic Fabiano – vibes, celeste, bells, and more – in addition to drums – plus bass from Worrell Jones, who keeps things nice and tight throughout. Alain sings on most tracks, in this flowing style that's more soulful than slick – never overdone, and almost just another warm musical element in the mix – on titles that include "I'm Angry", "California", "St Andrea", "Got My Place In The Country", "Spanish Roots", and "Sun Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(Please Note – one cover corner is slightly bumped from shipping, but the rest is great.)

✨✧ John PrineStorm Windows (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Asylum/Rhino, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
John Prine takes a trip down to Muscle Shoals for this classic album on Asylum – a set that mixes the best of his singer/songwriter spirit with just the right touch of Alabama soul! The blend is a nice one – as producer Barry Beckett still lets Prine do all the things he does so well – while maybe finding a new sort of vibe for the coming decade, yet without ever sounding commercial or like he's trying for a hit. Most of the tunes are still Prine's own – as sharply-penned as ever – and tracks include "Storm Windows", "One Red Rose", "I Had A Dream", "Living In The Future", "It's Happening To You", "Shop Talk", and "Sleepy Eyed Boy". Brown SugarBrown Sugar Featuring Clydie King ... LP
Chelsea/Demon (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A great little record from Brown Sugar – a group who really soar here, thanks to the presence of Clydie King on lead vocals! King sung famously on many rock and soul sessions during the 60s and 70s – but she's a great talent in the spotlight, and really helps to give the record a lot of focus – uniting the group's mix of deep soul and southern elements – lots of burning underneath the rhythms, and horns compressed over the top – in a style that's a bit Muscle Shoals, but more restrained overall, and with a few moments that go for more of an east coast feel. Titles include "Soul Asylum", "Love Can Bring You Down", "Weep For Me", "Don't Hold Back", "Real Love", and "Moonlight & Taming You". LP, Vinyl record album
