Afel Bocoum, Damon Albarn, Toumani TiabateMali Music ... CD
Honest Jons/Astralwerks, 2002. Used ... $4.99
That Damon Albarn's a busy guy! When he's not busy being a rock star or mock rock star, he's off on holiday in some exotic locale – but making another record at the same time, like this one, recorded in Mali. We have to admit, though we were predisposed towards the bare field recordings – featuring Malians singing and playing guitar and kora – which sound great, the more produced numbers are suprisingly wonderful too, and though the CD's all over the map, it still plays like a beautiful journey from start to finish. As you may already know, music from Mali steers it's own course, quite different from most of the other Afrobeat and funky African grooves you'll find elsewhere on our page, with a light springy quality and unhurried openness. 16 tracks in all, including "Le relax", "Makelekele", "Tennessee Hotel", "Kela Village" and "Sunset Coming On". Brian EnoAmbient 4 – On Land (180 gram pressing) ... LP
EG/Astralwerks, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 24.99
Brian Eno leaves the Airports, and moves On Land – but still keeps things pretty much in the spare sound of the Ambient series! The lineup here features a few more extra musicians – including Michael Beinhorn on synth, Jon Hassell on trumpet, Axel Gros and Michael Brook on guitars, and Bill Laswell on bass – but all players are used sparingly, and the overall sound hardly acknowledges their presence. Daniel Lanois helped in the recording of some of the material – an early moment in his famous partnership with Eno – and the tracks were recorded over the space of 4 years – with occasional glimmers of the British countryside through the hazy atmospherics of Eno's landscape. Titles include "Lizard Point", "Tal Coat", "Shadow", "A Clearing", "Unfamiliar Wind", "Lantern Marsh", and "The Lost Day". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Brian EnoBefore & After Science ... CD
Virgin/Astralwerks (UK), 1977. Used ... $6.99
The final album in Brian Eno's initial burst of genius in the 70s – and the last of those records to feature real rock songs, with vocals and lyrics! Eno steps off even further here from the territory he first explored on Another Green World – referencing some of his more private sonic experiments, but also still keeping things in a relatively tuneful mode – yet also somewhat personal, too – maybe a bit like Robert Wyatt at his early solo best. The record features contributions from some of his hipper contemporaries – Phil Manzanera and Robert Fripp on guitars, Fred Frith on "cascade guitars", Jaki Liebezeit and Phil Collins on drums (back when Phil was still hip!) – and more familiar musical partners Percy Jones on bass and Rhett Davies as the engineer. The whole album's brilliantly laid out – from fierceness to ambience, and back again – on titles that include "No One Receiving", "Kurt's Rejoinder", "King Lead Hat", "Spider & I", "Engery Fools The Magician", "Backwater", and "Here He Comes". Brian EnoFilm Music 1976 to 2020 ... CD
Astralwerks, Late 70s/1980s/1990s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Many years back, Brian Eno gave us a record called Music For Films – a set that came out during his initial run of Ambient recordings, showing us how strong his instrumental creations could be when and if applied to a cinematic mode! The tracks there were half imagined works for film – and those of us who loved Eno were always hoping that it would lead to more prominent scoring for the electrosonic genius. Turns out, that happened anyway – as this set of 17 tracks will attest – a rising Eno role in the film soundtrack world, served up on contributions from big productions and lesser-known gems. The set features work from films that include Heat, We Are As Gods, Trainspotting, Married To The Mob, Jubilee, Top Boy, Sebastiane, Hammerhead, Rams, Lovely Bones, Francis Bacon's Arena, and Cool World – a surprisingly rich array of material! ✨✧ Air10,000 Hz Legend ... CD
Astralwerks, 2001. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great early 00s effort from Air – bravely moving towards a deeper, trippier sound! For 10,000 Hz Legend, they wisely don't try to replicate the comparably effervescent vibe of their late 90s classic Moon Safari. On some level, they're still working with some of moodier textures of their work on the Virgin Suicides soundtrack, particularly in the warm, but slightly eerie melodies, but there's a much more expansive vibe here. They're still recognizable as sensual, electronics embracing avant pop composers of Moon Safari, but there's a lot more deftly layered influences here, from prog, to psych, to disco – and it's a great beginning-to-end listen. Includes "Electronic Performers", "How Does It Make You Feel", "Radio #1", "The Vagabond", "Radian", "Sex Born Poison", "People In The City", "Don't Be Light", "Caramel Prisoner" and more. CD

✨✧ Brian EnoAmbient 1 – Music For Airports (180 gram pressing) ... LP
EG/Astralwerks, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A landmark moment – both for Brian Eno, and for experimental music in general! Although Eno began his solo run with some searing, guitar-heavy records that were even wilder than his early work with Roxy Music – he also began experimenting with more sensitive aspects of sound on albums like Another Green World and Before & After Science – an approach he takes here to the farthest degree, by opening up himself and creating a whole new genre of ambient music in the process! Gone are the raspy, sometimes nasty vocals – and in their place is virtually nothing – just beautifully open music that uses scores that are somewhat cyclical – but at a pace that's very different than the minimalism of the period – and maybe even more minimal too. The record features four long tracks, one with piano by Robert Wyatt – really beautiful stuff, like some strange dark sonic crystal that fell out of the skies years ago, and which still remains a mystery to all ears that stumble upon it! ✨✧ Brian EnoMusic For Films ... LP
EG/Astralwerks, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A compilation LP of sorts – though at the time of its release most of this material had not been heard in this form! The album's more or less part of the "Ambient" series Eno had started that year with Music For Airports – and it's presented with similarly simple, elegant packaging – a cool divergence from the more striking Eno of a few years before. The set is made up of various bits, recorded either exclusively for film use, or that in one way or another found their way into films – and contains mostly short tunes, some thematic, others purely sonic wallpaper, but always compelling! 18 tracks, including "M386", "Aragon", "Two Rapid Formations", "Slow Water", "Sparrowfall", "Evenings In Dense Fog", "A Measured Room", "Strange Light", and "Final Sunset".
