✨✧ VariousPencak Killa Vol 1 – Melayu Funk & Rare Groove From Southeast Asia ... LP
Gila (Indonesia), Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic flurry of funk from 70s Southeast Asia – music that's quite different than some of the Thai or Cambodian pop that's been oft-compiled in recent years – and which has a definite strong tie to American soul of the time, especially music from the world of cop, crime, and blacksploitation soundtracks! The "rare groove" on the cover really set the scene for the sounds within – as the whole thing's overflowing with funky drums, sweet keyboards, and riffing guitars – often topped by lyrics that aren't in English, but which have a surprisingly soulful vibe on most of the tracks – which furthers the blacksploitation quality of the music. Titles on this first volume include "Gelagat Anak Muda" by Flybats, "Love You Inside Out" by Sharifah Aini, "Masih Kudamba" by Diana Nasution, "Regent Club" by Kapsulah Airmata Mu, "Lagu Disco Ku" by Kisah Seorang Biduan, and "Aries" by Ahmad Nawab. Adnan OthmanBershukor – A Retrospective Of Hits By A Malaysian Pop Yeh Yeh Legend 1968 to 1971 ... CD
Sublime Frequencies, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $15.99
You might not be able to understand the lyrics, but you'll definitely be moved by the instant charm of Malaysian rocker Adnan Othman – a singer who works here in a groovy blend of fuzzy guitar, mod rhythms, and all the other great sounds we love from late 60s French and British tracks of the time! In fact, there may be more French elements at work here than some of the more typical Anglo-influenced singers in Southeast Asia at the time – especially those romping rhythms and jangly guitar lines of the yeh-yeh generation, which really get these tunes moving even before Othman comes in with his vocals. By the end of the set, Adnan's expanding his sound a bit – moving from the work with The Rhythmn Boys that takes up most of the collection, to singing with The Wanderers and Flamingoes – all documented nicely in the notes and images in the package. Titles include "Bila Kah Gembira", "Doa Ku", "Bershukor", "Sapu Tangan", "Hari Bahagia", "Berlenggang", "Merana", "Mormah", and "Hidupu Tambah Gembira". CD

Copasetik, 1999. Used ... $3.99
Like his first LP, Rasco delivers something kinda rare – a hip hop LP that'll keep you listenening to every track from start to finish with no misses or gimmicks. Actually, this time the rhymes are a little more focused and the production is tighter. Production on half the tracks by His-Panik of the Molemen, with his classic underground-but-still-straight-hip-hop style and guest appearances by Planet Asia and Flii. CD

Saigon Soul RevivalHoa Am Xu'A ... CD
Saigon Supersound, 2019. New Copy ... $19.99
One of the coolest concepts for a funky combo we've heard in a long time – and a group that are nicely different from some of the old school acts in recent years! These guys definitely work in a vintage funk style – but one that's filtered through a Vietnamese heritage, specifically the late 60s/early 70s moment when a lot of American soul was coming through Southeast Asia via records and radio – and leaving behind some undeniable traces in the local scene as well! Lyrics are all in Vietnamese, and the instrumentation definitely echoes some older Saigon modes, mixed with classic Anglo funk elements – all for a very unique approach. Titles include "Haohoa", "Giayphutcuoitan", "Baicangong", "Chonlinhxua", "Naolacunghal", "Nhangianlinh", and "Dixadoinhau". CD

Ryuichi SakamotoThousand Knives Of Ryuichi Sakamoto ... CD
Better Days/We Want Sounds (France), 1978. New Copy ... $18.99
An early moment of genius from Ryuichi Sakamoto – the solo start of a fantastic legacy of electronic music, and a record that's still one of our real go-to discs from his mighty large catalog! The record is a great break from some other, earlier modes of Japanese experimentation – maybe leaner and less long-haired, but also with a sense of wit too – one that's subtle, and never gets in the way with too many simplistic tricks or jokes – but which also really gives the sonic experimentation of the album a nicely down-to-earth sort of vibe. Sakamoto plays a host of keyboards – moogs, Korgs, and others – and the record features slight contributions from some key contemporaries – a mix of guitar lines, percussion, and other elements. Titles include "The End Of Asia", "Plastic Bamboo", "Thousand Knives", "Island Of Woods", "Grasshoppers", and "Das Neue Japanische Elektronische Volkslied". CD

Grover Washington JrParadise ... LP
Elektra, 1979. Very Good ... $2.99
One of those records you see so much it's easy to forget how great it is! Grover's a real genius with the sax on this record – taking a "less is more" cue from Stanley Turrentine's 70s work, and toning down his playing to an even tighter style than on the Kudu albums of earlier years, to a level of ultimate economy that really leaves us breathless. Sure, the record's not a raw bit of funkety funk – but we're just as enthralled at pure commercial genius as we are at unbridled underground talent, and this album's a masterpiece of pacing, playing, and presentation that shows Washington still steeped in the soul jazz roots from whence he came, brilliantly focused on reaching a larger audience through economical use of his genius. He hits a rarified level here that we'd only reserve for a small few – like Steely Dan or The Crusaders, both groups who teeter on the same brink, and make it work perfectly. Titles include "Asia's Theme", "Tell Me About It Now", "Feel It Comin", "Icey", and "The Answer In Your Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album

Expansion (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
A sublime entry in this always-great series – a selection of cuts that are mostly contemporary, but which bubble with a classic soul vibe all the way through! And by "classic", we mean the sound of the early years of modern soul – those late 70s/early 80s groovers from the period when disco started to wane, and a new, more sophisticated groove came into the mix – often more of a midtempo mode, with great songwriting, instrumentation, and an impeccable sense of presentation! There's a few older cuts in the mix, too – and also some nice surprises along the way – and titles include "Your Love" by Kenny Thomas, "That Feelin" by Cornell CC Carter, "Right On Time" by The Apx, "I'll Take Your Word For It" by Lexi, "He's A Hurricane (boogie back ext mix)" by James Day with Cheryl Pepsii Riley & Joe Cunningham, "Pleasure" by Mousse T with Peven Everett, "All Night Long (ext mix)" by John Reid, "Hit Or Miss (album mix)" by Change, "One More Praise" by Brian Courtney Wilson, "One & Only" by The Ritchie Family, "About Your Love (ext mix)" by Jaki Graham, "Lies (groovy soul rmx)" by DJ Spen with Asia Yarwood,"Around The World" by Imaa, and "Shine Your Light (main mix)" by Prefix One with Andrae Melody Palmer. ✨✧ Nathan DavisNathan Davis With Georges Arvanitas Trio – Live in Paris – The ORTF Recordings 1966/67 (180 gram 3LP pressing) ... LP
Sam Records (France), Mid 60s. Near Mint- 3LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing music by one of our favorite saxophone players of all time – captured here at the height of his 60s genius on the European scene! The tracks here have never been issued at all – but stand as a perfect complement to the killer MPS/Saba albums by Nathan Davis – and are served up with a similar blend of soulful hardbop and modernist edges – qualities that are already present in the fantastic phrasing of Davis on tenor and flute, pushed even further by the equally great work of French piano legend Georges Arvanitas! Although Arvanitas could be out when he wanted, he could also swing like the best of them – and his pairing with Davis here is perfect, and really brings out both the soul and edge in both players – especially in the company of George's fantastic rhythm duo of Charles Saudrais on drums and Jacky Samson on bass. The set's full of other surprises, too – including a bit of organ from Arvanitas, and an appearance by Jack Dieval – and the whole thing is beautifully recorded by French Radio. Tracks are all long – and include "Mid Evil Dance", "Blues For Southeast Asia", "The Hip Walk", "Rules Of Freedom", "A5", "The Thing", "Love Ye The Neighbor", "Nathalie's Dance", and "Yesterdays" in both flute and tenor versions. Akenation, Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Heady sounds from the Cambodian scene of the late 60s – a set of work that mixes together modes that may well have Cambodia sounding like the the most psychedelic nation in Southeast Asia! The music here is of two types – one a transformation of older Cambodian styles with a strong influence from European pop and rock, the other a more direct version of psychedelic modes – with lots of heavy, freaky guitar lines in the mix! The vocals on both styles are often recorded with a version of echo that's much more East Asian than anything ever used in the Anglo world – and taken together, the two modes of expression make the whole album a really rich collection of fresh sounds. Titles include "I Wonder" by Eng Nary, "Navy A Go Go" by Sinn Sisamout, "Rom Sue Sue" by Liev Tuk, "Jam 10 Kai Thiet" by Ros Serey Sothea, "Yuvajon Kouge Jet" by Yol Aularong, "Jomreang Oun Chreang" by Choun Malai, "Do You No Wrong Again" by Thra Kha Band, and "De Quoi Pleures-Tu" by Baksey Cham Krong & Mol Kamach. The huge breakout album from Basia – a set that had the Polish-born singer reaching out to the well-deserved global fame that you might guess from the title! Basia works closely here with Danny White – who gives the record a London-bred blend of pop and soul – one that's a cut above more mainstream hits, with enough care to recognize the jazz currents in Basia's vocals, and her deeper range too. The vibe's a bit like the earliest Swing Out Sister material, but less jazzy overall – and titles include "Best Friends", "Not An Angel", "Copernicus", "Cruising For Bruising", "Ordinary People", "Baby You're Mine", and "Until You Come Back To Me". One of the coolest, moogiest records we've ever heard from Mort Garson – and that's saying a lot, given that the man gave us the Wozzard Of Iz and a host of moog-based astrological records too! The album's billed as "mood music especially composed to aid the growing of your plants" – and while we doubt that claim, it's more than groovy enough without any herbaceous activity at hand – these cool keyboard lines that are often sweetly tuneful, but nicely tripped-out too – played by one of the best cats to really grab hold of the moog right at the start of its great musical run! Before the bossa, there was Ary Barroso and his lively samba and baiao compositions. This beautiful late 50s album features a stunning host of them, played in a pretty laidback sort of way, with Ary at the piano, backed by a smaller rhythm group, and some occasional larger arrangements. A few tracks have vocals, but most of them are instrumentals, with a very "fantastica" sound that matches the lovely cartoony cover of the album. Renown/Mad About Records (Portugal), 1962. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An insanely wonderful bit of jazz from the South African scene – an early 60s record that stands as one of the first to really express the kind of special sound and promise that would emerge from that nation in years to come! Part of that jazz legacy was an expatriate one – as some musicians soon fled the discrimination of Apartheid for better treatment in the US and Europe – but this set is from an early moment when the scene still held together at a more regional level, one that balanced tradition and experimentation with a good deal of modernism, soul, and swing! The group's led by pianist Gideon Nxumalo, who also plays a bit of percussion – and the songs soar with tremendous contributions from two legendary alto players – Kippie Moektesi and Dudu Pukwana, both shining out with these lines that are angular, edgey, and extremely powerful. The group also features Makaya Ntshoko on drums and Martin Mgijima on bass – and the whole thing resonates with almost a Mingus-like balance of unusual rhythms, individual expression, and a very righteous conception overall. Titles include "Split Soul", "Isintu", "Chopi Chopsticks", and the side-long "Jazz Fantasia" suite. LP, Vinyl record album

Super Fuji Discs/Mobys (Japan), 1985. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
These guys just get better and better with each release – finding a tightness they never had before, yet still keeping all of their sharp edges intact! The sound here is nicely focused, and very heavy on both saxes and brass – bursting forth in kind of an old school mode, yet set to rhythms and energy that have a very youthful feel! At some level, we might actually call these guys a precursor of the Japanese club jazz scene of recent years – especially the work of Soil & Pimp – but they've also got a sound that, while rhythmic, is also more jazz overall – although some moments here definitely groove! Titles include the long "First Dawn", plus "Dancer's Image" and "So Blessed". 2CD set features 6 more bonus tracks too! CD

Homewood/Sacred Bones, 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "A Mellow Mood For Maidenhair", "You Don't Have To Walk A Begonia", "Concerto For Philodendron & Pothos", "Ode To An African Violet", and "Plantasia". CD

Andrew's Music, 1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s/2010s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Andrew White has always been one of the most enigmatic saxophone players in the world – and one of his most compelling enigmas is his love of repetition – his way of handling the same song in so many different ways, and really unlocking the magic of jazz in the process! Here, White offers up 30 version of his classic "Theme" – a tune he first created in 1963, and which is presented here on recordings from the 70s up through the present, all with White in different modes, on different instruments – a variety of saxes, solo piano, and even some duets between sax and piano – plus larger groups too. Like most of Andrew's self-produced records, the whole thing is pretty incredible – but in a way that's very different than the usual jazz release. CD

Stelvio CiprianiSecond Spring ... CD
CAM/Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1975. New Copy ... $22.99
A great little soundtrack – one that's in a mode that might well be our favorite from the Italian scene of the early 70s – a style that's funky and breezy at once, dreamy and groovy, and delivered with instrumental inflections that still have us scratching our heads at the process! Stelvio Cipriani is at his best here – even though the set has more acoustic piano instead of electric – as his role at the help is superb, as he works through light percussion, warm horn arrangements, slight strings, and other cool elements that perfectly balance between bossa and jazz, cinema and lounge, all with an organic, effortless quality that hangs tight throughout all the tracks on the record. Eddie Constantine sings on two tracks, but most numbers are instrumental – and titles include "Ricordi Nel Bosco", "Second Spring", "Tema Di Anna", "Fantasia Tragica", and "It Was A Dream". CD

Wu Tang stalwart Inspectah Deck back in the Shaolin style on Chamber No 9 – complete with Asian action cinema soundbites, an ODB tribute track, and the flying guillotine on the cover – and whether you want to chalk it up to nostalgia or not, it's pretty nice to hear him revisiting his roots! Deck's always been one of the Wu's underrated figures, but he's been one of the most consistently solid over the years, too – be it on the all too rare solo albums or with his latter day group Czarface. This one is a straight up Wu Tang offshoot, and titles include "Shaolin Rebel", "Russell Jones", "Chamber No 9", "Certified", "24K" with Hellfire & Cappadonna, "Game Don't Change", "Who Run It" feat Hellfire & Streetlife and more. 12 tracks and no filler. La Protesta With Tony PabonOn The Right Track ... CD
Rico, 1972. Used ... $18.99
An early gem from La Protesta – the hip 70s combo fronted by trumpeter Tony Pabon! Tony's lines are strongly out in the lead on most cuts, as are vocals from Nestor Sanchez, who also sings with Pabon – and other instrumentation includes additional trumpets, piano, bass, timbales, congas, and bongos! A few tracks warm things up a bit, but the best numbers are the driving, upbeat ones – which carry an older descarga energy into the leaner salsa generation – leaving room for a few jazzy touches, but focusing a bit more on the sound of the ensemble. Titles include "Fe Y Esperanza", "Antonia Gervasia", "Cupid", "Vago", "El Loco", "Lo Voy A Matar", "El Sol No Brilla", and "Que Vida La Vida". CD

One of the first ever albums by the Ramsey Lewis Trio – featuring an assortment of lively tracks with a touch of jazz-based humor, the kind that were winning them huge audiences in Chicago at the time! With Eldee Young and Redd Holt to back him up, Ramsey's got plenty of pyrotechnics in tow – which means that he does a great job on versions of familiar tunes like "Carmen", "I'll Remember April", and "Bi Mir Bist Du Shon" – as well as great originals like "Fantasia For Drums", "Dee's New Blues", and "Tres". Carmen LundyCode Noir ... CD
Afrasia, 2017. New Copy ... $14.99 16.98
Fantastic work from Carmen Lundy – one of our favorite jazz singers of all time, and an artist who keeps on giving us her best as the years go on! This album's definitely some of Carmen's best – as it features the singer working with a wonderful group that includes Jeff Parker on guitar, Patrice Rushen on piano, Ben Williams on bass, and Kendrick Scott on drums – a tight core combo who really find a way to push Lundy's energy even more than usual – while Carmen herself handles other keyboards with her vocals, and serves especially righteous material! There's a bit more politics here than on previous records – perfect for the spirit of the moment – but Carmen also mixes a lot of warmth and love into her music as well. Titles include "Black & Blues", "Afterglow", "Whatever It Takes", "I Keep Falling", "The Island The Sea & You", "Have A Little Faith", and "Another Chance". CD

Afrasia, 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
To our ears, there's nothing like a record from Carmen Lundy – one of the few jazz singers who can hold us completely rapt over the years, and who keeps on coming up with wonderful albums like this one! Carmen's voice has always been fantastic, but in recent years she's got an even more majestic sense of her instrument – tuned here to some tunes that really continue the more powerful lyrical approach she's used over the past decade or so – with an agenda that's much larger than herself, and has righteous elements we never would have found in her earlier music! Lundy's also become quite the instrumentalist too – and also handles guitar, Fender Rhodes, and even some larger orchestrations – in a lineup that also features piano from Julius Rodriguez, bass from Curtis Lundy and Kenny Davis, and percussion from Mayra Casales. Titles include "A Time For Peace", "Burden Down Burden Down", "Jazz On TV", "Meant For Each Other", "Still", and "Affair Brazil". CD

Great stuff from the early academic days of analogue electronics! Professor Emerson Meyers ran the electronic music library at the Catholic University of America – and despite the sanctimonius nature of his employers, this is some of the most unholy noise we've ever heard! Many of the tracks are dark and brooding, with loud blasts of sound, and strange off-beat washes of moog. The record's pretty darn compelling all the way through – and titles include "Moonlight Sound Pictures", "Chez Dentiste", "Rhythmus", "Fantasia For Organ & Tape", and "Fanfare & Raga for Bassoon & Tape". Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $19.99
A really cool blend of jazz and electronics – done up in some of the ambitious modes of composer Bingo Miki's other work, yet with a style that's a lot more straight ahead overall! The jazz component of the record is served up strongly by tenorist Tatsuya Takahashi – who leads a group that's mostly acoustic, but which features lots of cool keyboard work from Mickey Yoshino – who soars in with spacey lines and weird melodies, and really expands on the rich tones and colors of the horns – always in ways that are a lot different, and a lot more creative than the usual 70s big band record with keyboards. Tracks are all quite long, with a richly illustrative feel – and titles include "Sketches Of Munch", "The Legend Of Garbo", "Andersen Fantasia", "Sibelius Testament", and "Children At Play". CD

Sexedelic (Manfred Huebler & Sigi Schwab)Sexedelic ... LP
Metronome/Wah Wah (Spain), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
A fantastic record that more than lives up to the promise of its title and cover – and a set that's gone onto legendary fame as part of the music used by director Jess Franco for his Vampyros Lesbos films! The music here comes from the German jazz scene of the early 70s – a sound library set that features the talents of guitarist Sigi Schwab, who you'll know from some very groovy records on MPS – and a host of other great projects at the time! Schwab put the music together with keyboardist Manfred Huebler, in a style that's got the same blend of funk, jazz, and psych as some of the MPS jazz albums by artists like Dave Pike or Wolfang Dauner – but which comes across here with maybe even a bit more sense of freedom, as the whole thing works to convey the vibe of some sort of drug-fueled orgy on record! Think of this as a psychedelic take on porno sounds, and you'll only get part of the picture – because the jazz chops are wonderful, as is the sense of arrangement and production. Titles include "People's Playground", in five variations – plus "Kamasutra", "Konkubination", "Shindai Lovers", "The 6 Wisdoms Of Aspasia", "We Don't Care", and "Necronomania". LP, Vinyl record album

No Business (Lithuania), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
The kind of record that makes us very proud to say we're from Chicago – as leader Juan FG Vinuesa comes up with a way to keep the city's avant scene moving forward – using some of the mix of structure and freedom from the Mike Reed generation, but also adding in both older elements, and some occasional moments of improvised freedom! A few passages swing here with a vibe that recalls older "city jazz" projects – but those are balanced by bolder statements from all members of the quartet – a superb lineup that includes Vinuesa on tenor, Josh Berman on cornet, Jason Roebke on bass, and Mikel Patrick Avery on drums and percussion. Berman sounds wonderful here – with occasional exclamatory moments that really grab us – and all tunes and arrangements are by Juan, with titles that include "Red Line Ballad", "The Alibi", "Ghost Town Studio", "La Lola", "Afro Asiatic Beat Poem", and "Luther's Mood". A very cool Polish singer from the 70s – but one who works in styles we'd be much more likely to associate with male vocalists from America in the previous decade! Part of the style might have to do with the backings – which are superbly handled by jazzman Jerzy Milian, who directs the PRiTV orchestra with all these unusual tonal colors and shadings – almost with the sorts of sophistication that someone like Jack Jones or Vic Damone might have been using at the end of the 60s, yet still graced with plenty of Jerzy's own cool touches too – including some of his work on vibes! An amazing violinist from Greece, but one who recorded in New York during the 20s – on a host of rare 78rpm material presented in this lavish set! Alexis Zoumbas has a wonderfully melancholy feel to his instrument – a style that mixes virtuostic passages with these deeper, bluer qualities that are more folkloric – often supported with just a bit of work on acoustic bass for the recordings, or a bit of very cool cymbalom as well! The quality of the package and music reproductions puts this one right up there with collections of ethnic 78s on Tompkins Square or Honest Jons – and titles include "Alimbeis", "Tzamara Arvanitiko", "Syrtos Sta Dyo", "Frasia", and "Epirotiko Mirologi". Four Flies (Italy), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $32.99
Freaky funk from the Italian scene – exactly the kind of grooves that will open your ears if you think that funky sounds can only come from American soul bands or jazz musicians! The music here is filled with heavy drums, tight basslines, and lots of other groovy instrumental touches – offbeat keyboards, riffing guitars, and other instrumentation that's sometimes given these odd psychedelic touches by the studio maestros who were putting together the cuts at the time – some of which were used in obscure soundtracks, and a number of which appear here for the first time ever! This isn't the overly-familiar film music territory of other collections – and instead, most of this music is completely fresh – even for the longtime collector – presented in a great package that includes the cuts "Anastasia Mio Fratello" by Piero Piccioni, "Un Uomo Dalla Pelle Dura" by Carlo Pes, "La Mano Lunga Del Padrino" by Silvano D'Auria, "L'Arbitro" by Guido & Maurizio DeAngelis, "La Liceale Nella Classe Dei Ripetenti" by Gianni Ferrio, "L'Altro Dio" by Alessandro Alessandroni, "Giovane Clan" by Sandro Brugnolini, "La Profonda Luce Dei Sensi" by SEverino Gazzelloni, and "Calamo" by Claudio Tallino. A beautiful take on Brazilian guitar modes from earlier years – a set that has Leonardo Boccia first stepping out in an acoustic vibe that echoes roots from Baden Powell and Luiz Bonfa – then has the musician working alongside the vocals of Sueli Sodre, plus added percussion and effects – all in a way that creates this magical interplay of guitar and voice! The approach is a bit like some of the more experimental tracks that Joyce recorded over the years, but the album is also a bit more varied too – as Boccia plays keyboards at a few spots, adding just a bit of electricity into this mostly-acoustic affair – on titles that include "Terra E Povo", "Mae Natureza", "Lenda Do Sertao", "Urucungo", "Cancao Para Iracema", "Durma Estrelinha", and "Choro Fantasia". About as classic as you can get for Sonny Rollins during the 50s – from the cover right down to the incredible solos on the set! The album's got Rollins really stretching out – still not finding the freer trio mode of his Vanguard session, but still bringing in plenty of fresh ideas in both his phrasing and the construction of his tunes – way more than just the roots of his (still excellent) years as a boppish player. The group's nice and loose – with Wynton Kelly on soulful piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – all able to snap into a groove when needed, but also letting Rollins really lay back into a solo too. An astonishingly rare treasure by exotic jazz genius Lloyd Miller – originally issued by East West Records in a run of just a few hundred copies! Recorded at The University Of Utah, it's a wonderful synthesis of the eastern and otherwise globally-inspired instrumentation Miller is beloved for, and the western jazz styles of his earlier years playing behind Don Ellis, Eddie Harris & others. Recorded with players from the university's jazz ensembles, along with several numbers with the Mike Johnson Quartet, it came a time when Miller was becoming so well educated in Far Eastern, Middle Eastern and Asian music and culture, and was already such a seasoned American jazz player himself, it's really stunning this set is such a rare one! Amazing stuff from a late 60s period when he was really starting to cement his legend. ✨✧ VariousKraut Jazz Futurism – A New Wave Of German Bands Inspired By Krautrock, Afrobeat, Jazz, & Electronica (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Kryptox (Germany), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great little collection that's everything it promises in the title – a survey of the current German underground, with a focus on the best bands who've been inspired by the styles of the past! Apart from Karl Hector & The Malcouns, all the other work here is new to our ears – and the set's not just a collection of other releases, but also features a fair bit of debut tracks that show up here for the first time ever – and some others that never had anything other than a brief digital history online! Most of these artists really know how to take off from their inspirations – not just recreate music from the past, but use elements of modes like jazz funk or afro beat in great new settings – really opening up the German scene with the same sort of excitement we felt when we first encountered Compost Records many years back. Titles include "Der Inder" by Karaba, "Magnolia Tree" by Salomea, "Space Station" by David Nesselhauf, "Dick Schaffrath" by CAR, "Acrasian Beat" by Sissi Rada, "The Little Giant" by Stimming x Lambert, "Orange Man" by Karl Hector & The Malcouns, "El Fuego" by Toresch, "Night In Bacalar" by Keope, and "Balanphontanz In Drei Schuben" by Nicklas Wandt. ✨✧ Carmen LundySoul To Soul ... CD
Afrasia, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We've loved Carmen Lundy since the very first time we heard her voice – and that love has only continued to grow over the decades, as she's given us a tremendous run of great records and wonderful music! This time around, Lundy's still strongly in the jazz side of the spectrum, but also brings in a bit of the soul music promised in the title – working in sharp focus on a set of well-penned original tunes that really open up her vocals – most of which feature the legendary Patrice Rushen on keyboards, too! There's an understated brilliance here that really lives up to Lundy's legacy – a way of putting over a tune without every overdoing it – a lesson that's been learned in jazz, but which also has a great impact here in a slightly different setting. Other players on the record include Warren Wolf on vibes, Geri Allen on Fender Rhodes and piano, Darryl Hyall on bass, and Bennie Maupin on soprano sax – and titles include "Grace", "Kindred Spirits", "Life Is A Song In Me", "Soul To Soul", "When Will They Learn", and "Grateful (parts 1 & 2)". ✨✧ Helio MatheusMatheus Segundo Matheus ... LP
RCA/Athens Of The North (UK), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A sweet bit of electric work from 70s Brazil – the only album we've ever seen from Helio Matheus, and one of those rare gems that's every bit as great as its legend might imply! Helio works here in this spacious territory that has a compressed groove on the bottom, and a wide sound on the sides – where the vocals, guitar, and keyboards move together with these airy, jazzy modes that are a bit like the electric 70s material of Joao Donato or Marcos Valle! Helio's maybe a bit more soulful overall, and has a raspy quality in his vocals that's more than charming enough, even if you can't understand his vocals – and he uses a fair bit of acoustic guitar amidst the electric elements in the arrangements, which further warms things up in a great way. Most of the tunes are originals by Matheus, and the set features Fender Rhodes from Ze Roberto, and arrangements by Chiquinho De Moraes – on titles that include "Ausencia", "Voce Se Foi", "Camisa 10", "Comunicacao", "Cidadezinha", "Mais Kriola", "Marraio", "Meu Diario", and "Meu Mundo De Monstros E Fantasias". Alfa (Japan), 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
The second album from Haruomi Hosono, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takahashi, not as much of an electro groove filled affair as the first, but still a great batch of quirky techno-electro Asian pop with lots of great bubbling synth touches! 8 tracks in all including "Behind The Mask", "Day Tripper", "Technopolis", "Multiples", "Citizens Of Science" and "Solid State Survivor".
