✨✧ Asha PuthliAsha Puthli ... LP
CBS, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Asha Pulthi's first album – an excellent set of funky soul tunes, recorded in Germany with backings that are a mixture of spacey electric, smooth funk, and campy easy grooves. Asha's voice is very weird – a bit in the "love to love you baby" mode, and with a range of sounds that moves up and down the scale almost as much as Minnie Riperton. The record's got a nice mix of jazzy arrangements, and Asha's unique high-pitched vocals work great on tracks like "Lies", "Right Down Here", and George Harrison's "I Dig Love". Other tracks include "Truth", "I Am A Song", "Let Me In Your Life", and "This Is Your Life". LP, Vinyl record album

Lloyd McNeillWashington Suite (with bonus download) ... LP
Asha/Soul Jazz (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
One of the most beautiful albums ever recorded by DC flutist Lloyd McNeil – and one of the grooviest, too! Lloyd's work is always amazing – stretched-out, spiritual, and filled with life – but this time around, there's a definite groove to the record that's undeniable – an increased sense of rhythm, yet one that's still extremely creative, especially in the mellower moments – which are among some of the most compelling that McNeil ever recorded. The tunes were originally scored for a dance group, and feature a core combo with Lloyd on flute, some great Fender Rhodes from Eugene Rush, and sublime bass and drum patterns – mixed with some haunting added woodwinds, played by a combo that also features the legendary Andrew White. The whole record has a beautifully rhythmic quality, filled with throbbing, modal, soulful grooves – and tracks include "Home Rule", "City Triptych", "2504 Cliffborne Pl", "Just 71% Moor", and "Fountain In The Circle". Kalyanji AnandjiMuqaddar Ka Sikandar ... CD
Subah Zindagi (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $8.99
A great little Bollywood soundtrack by one of key composers of the genre – and one that's still got all the right sort of elements you might expect! There's some really great upbeat tracks – nice groovers that even get a bit funky at times – and which have a few cool instrumental flourishes that really make the album a gem! The best of these is probably the 7 minute "Pyar Zindagi Hai", which has great wah-wah guitar – and some vocals by Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle – but there's nice guitar at other moments too, and other tracks include "O Saathi Re", "Zindagi To Bewafa Hai", "Dil To Hai Dil", and "Rote Hue Aate Hain Sab". ✨✧ Ornette ColemanComplete Science Fiction Sessions (including Broken Shadows – plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia, 1972. Used 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
One of Ornette Coleman's best recordings from the 70s – and like his other album for Columbia, quite a change from the freewheeling sounds he was blowing over at Blue Note! The style here is a bit more high concept, but in a good way – with all the edges that Coleman had developed from the late 50s onward, brought into tighter focus for the Columbia setting – given a bit more complexity, although still with plenty of room for freedom – and played both with a smaller combo, and a slightly larger group. The mix of players is as striking as the sounds on the record – and includes Coleman on alto, trumpet, and violin – plus Dewey Redman on tenor, Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Bobby Bradford on trumpet, Jim Hall on guitar, Cedar Walton on piano, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins and Ed Blackwell on drums. Asha Pulthi sings a bit on the larger ensemble tracks – making a rare appearance here before her 70s soul career in Germany – and titles include "What Reason Could I Give", "Street Woman", "The Jungle Is A Skycraper", and "All My Life". 2CD set also features all the material from the Broken Shadows album as well – plus 3 previously unissued bonus tracks. Other titles include "Happy House", "Elizabeth", "Good Girl Blues", "Broken Shadows", "Rubber Gloves", and "Written Word". CD

Baobab/Soul Jazz (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
A superb record from the great Lloyd McNeil – one of the more obscure players of the spiritual jazz generation of the 70s, but an artist who always gave us his best whenever he walked into the studio! Here, the mood is a mix of modal and Latin elements, with a definite current of influence from Brazil – thanks in part to the presence of Dom Salvador on piano and Nana Vasconcelos on percussion – in a lineup that also features Cecil McBee on bass, and Claudio Celso on guitar. The real star, though, is clearly Lloyd – whose flute solos are some of his most complex, expressive on record – very soulful, but at a level that hardly recalls any other player we can think of – very fitting for the personal themes of the tunes. Chatsford/Athens Of The North (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
An underground mellow soul gem from the 70s – recorded on the Detroit scene with lead vocals by Judy Pollak, and backings by a very hip soul trio! 33 1/3 are way more than just an instrumental group – as they also harmonize behind Judy a fair bit – really elevating the soul quotient of the record, and almost making us wonder what they'd sound like on their own! Pollak is a pretty compelling singer, though – and has this light, airy style that's a bit like Asha Pulthi, but maybe without the many-octave range – which makes for a very unique contrast in the way she's paired with the group. Bombay grooves, but not just the disco promised in the title – as these cuts come mostly from the 80s years of Bollywood, and show Indian funk moving into a great new realm of styles! There's definitely a disco vibe at the core – and as in other scenes, the style stayed current a lot longer in India than it did in the US – but there's also some other great 80s elements at play, including some electro touches, bits of house, and even some bits that feel more like indie boogie material than the usual Bollywood groove! Together, the tracks are a real revelation – and push our understanding of Indian film grooves way past any simple cliches – and also have inspired us to start digging for these overlooked gems from later years too. The package comes with notes and images of the records – and titles include "Tadeer Ka Bashah" by Bappi Lahiri, "Aaya Sanam Aaya Deewana Tera" by Kishore Humar, "Pass Ao Na" by Asha Bhosle, "Saat Samundar Paar" by Sadhana Sargam, "Hotel Mein Bottle" by Sharda, "Dance Music" by Hridaynath Mageshkar, "Jab Chaye" by Asha Bhosle, "Main Jaadugar" by Kumar Sanu & Jolly Mukherjee, and "Disco Music" by RD Burman. ✨✧ VariousEthiopian Hit Parade Vol 1 ... LP
Ahma/Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A seminal album of sounds from the groundbreaking Ethiopian scene at the start of the 70s – a full length collection of previous 45s from the excellent Ahma Records label – home to revolutionary sounds that continue to influence new generations of listeners! The music here represents the Golden Age at its peak – sounds that partly reform older traditions with new modernist ideals, partly shift sideways from western influences, to the sorts of enigmatic, other-worldly styles you'd know from the music of Mulatu and some of his contemporaries! And lest you think that "hit parade" means commercial crass, think again – because these tunes are every bit as mindblowing as the music you'd find on the seminal Ethiopiques series. Titles include "Addis Abeda Bete" by Alemayehu Eshete, "Tezeta" by Seifu Yohannes, "Yeberehe Lomie" by Abayneh Degene, "Gara Ser Naw Betesh" by Teshome Meteku, "Asha Dedawo" by Menelik Wossenachew, "Ayamaru Eshete" by Essatu Tessema, and "Hedech Alu" by Muluken Melesse. Prince Lasha EnsembleInsight ... CD
Columbia/Dusty Groove, 1966. New Copy ... $6.99 12.98
Tremendous work from the legendary Prince Lasha – a rare UK-only date from 1966 – and one that has the reedman working away from more familiar contemporaries like Sonny Simmons and Eric Dolphy! The approach on this session is very unique – as Lasha includes harp with the instrumentation, played by David Snell in a style that's right up there with Dorothy Ashby's best jazz work. Pianist Stan Tracey is also on board – playing beautiful notes that have a sharp modern edge, while still falling on the inside of the spectrum – and Lasha himself is especially great – blowing plastic alto sax and wooden flute, both of which have a slightly offbeat sound – but one that's surprisingly warm, which makes the album one of his most sensitive and soulful sessions ever! The tunes are a mix of standards and originals – and there's a wonderful sense of balance here – sounds that are sometimes more inside than other records from Lasha, but which have a really Dolphy-like sense of expression – right at home amidst a wider history of jazz, yet also reaching for new ideas at the same time. Pure genius throughout, and a record that was never made available to audiences in the US. Titles include "Nuttin Out Jones", "Impressions Of Eric Dolphy", "Out Of Nowhere", "Just Friends", "Body & Soul", and "Everything Happens To Me". CD

The American players don't play on every track – leaving about half the record to the Bossa Tres on their own – making for a nice shift between trio bossa tunes and larger group jamming numbers. Atlantic, 1979. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lasting classic from singer Tasha Thomas – a vocalist who'd already lent her talents to numerous studio sessions, commercials, and disco tracks by the time of this release – which has the lady stepping into the spotlight as a fully-formed talent in her own right! The vocals are definitely a cut above the usual album of this nature – certainly more so than the quickie disco debuts of the period – and the record's strength is also due to the arrangements from Don Sebesky and Richard Tee, who bring their own top shelf talents to play on the set. Most numbers are uptempo and clubby – and have a way deeper vibe than pop disco – and surprises include funky uptempo bells in "Shoot Me (With Your Love)", two step funk in "Hot Buttered Boogie", and a nice cover of "Drinking Again" – plus the cuts "You Put The Music In Me", "Street Fever", and "You're The One I Love". ✨✧ Roland KirkPre-Rashaan (Kirk's Works/Jaki Byard Experience) ... CD
Prestige, 1961/1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Nice 2-in-1 set that reissues 2 hard to find albums by Roland Kirk! Kirk's Work is a strange and tasty album that Kirk made with organist Jack McDuff in the early 60s. The album's also been issued under the title Funk Underneath – but this is the original version. Kirk's tenor, manzello, stritch, and flute sound great next to Brother Jack's organ, and his sense of humor matches that of the great keyboardist. They swing hard, and have a lot of fun, especially on tracks like "Kirk's Work", "Three for Dizzy", and "Doin' the Sixty-Eight". The second album was cut under Jaki Byard's name – and is an amazing (and often forgotten) quartet session that brings together the enigmatic pianist and the mind-blowing multi-reed player. Kirk and Byard had played together previously, most notably on some of Kirk's Mercury recordings, and they fit together perfectly in this mad session of off-kilter jazz. The two of them are backed by Alan Dawson on drums and Richard Davis on bass, and the group's as tight as a drum. Titles include "Parisian Thoroughfare", "Evidence", "Memories Of You", and "Hazy Eve". CD

Prince Lasha's second LP of live tracks from the Berkeley Jazz Festival – a dexterous set featuring Ron Carter on bass, Hubert Eaves on piano, Roy McCurdy on drums, and Kenneth Nash on African percussion. Lasha's on baritone & soprano sax, as well as his flute. You really get the range of Lasha's tendencies on the 3 long tracks – which leave ample room for some out riffing, but are held together by tight interplay among the musicians and some really great soloing! The A-side spanner "Mayflower" has Lasha on baritone sax and the players at their most muscular and out, although it comes together pretty tightly in the middle. "For the Child" is a moodier piece with Lasha on flute, and "Tracking Train" closes out the set with Lasha on soprano sax. LP, Vinyl record album

A tremendous record from one of our favorite saxophonists of the past decade – the completely sublime, completely wonderful Nat Birchall – a musician who was way ahead of the curve towards spiritual jazz that others have hit in recent years, and one who still does it better than anyone else! The title gives away only part of the story – as Nat's definitely paying tribute to the great Yusef Lateef, particularly the mix of soulful jazz and exoticism in his earlier work – but the overall execution is very much in the best Birchall mode – long-building tracks, really informed by a strong tradition of spiritual energy, and not just in musical form – as the leader blows tenor, soprano, bass clarinet, and handles a range of instruments from around the globe – in the company of Michael Bardon on bass, Andy Hay on drums and percussion, and either Adam Fairhall or John Ellis on piano, depending on the track. A few of the tunes are classics from the vintage Lateef songbook, and Birchall has also seamlessly contributed a few numbers of his own – making for a fantastic double-length set, with titles that include "Tales Of Saba", "Ching Miau", "Salaam Brother Yusef", "Inward Flight", "Brother John", "Not Yet Ornette", "Ringo Oiwake", and "Mashariki" – plus a great version of "Love Theme From Spartacus", a tune that Lateef made his own back in the 60s, with a fantastic reading that's gone on to inspire many. ✨✧ Bobby Blue BlandTwo Steps From The Blues (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Duke/MCA, Early 60s. Used ... $3.99
An incredible record from Bobby Blue Bland – and quite possibly the greatest one he ever made! The set's got an amazing something special that's unlike most other material of the time – a bit blues, but a lot of soul too – still with some echoes of R&B in the jazzier charts used for the backdrop, but presented with a rock-solid style that definitely points the way towards many sounds and styles to come in the 60s. And although Bland recorded many of these tracks as separate singles, there's a way they're put together here that makes the whole thing sound completely marvelous together – a really well-conceived track list that shows that Bobby's an even greater artist in the space of a full record. The arrangements are perfect, and Bobby's rough soulful voice is blended in this amazing way with killer horn arrangements that are far more sophisticated than most stuff that ever came after this, and which never get in the way, but only back up his deep emotion. The album's a motherlode of classics by the man, with gems that include "Two Steps From The Blues", "Cry Cry Cry", "I Don't Want No Woman", "I'm Not Ashamed", "Don't Cry No More", "Lead Me On", and "I Pity The Fool". And hell, even his version of "St James Infirmary" is pretty wonderful – something we never thought we'd say about that song. CD

Mello Music Group, 2018. New Copy ... $13.99 24.99
Unfiltered portraits of the artist formerly known as Red Pill – delivering the goods under his own name on a solid set for the Mello Music Group! Real life, self searching and personal statement making hip hop from a voice rooted in classic 90s school craft – not so much with a neo-classic sound as much as a strong commitment to beats, rhymes and life experience. Good stuff! Includes production by Nolan The Ninja, Apollo Brown, L'Orange, Onra and Exile – and given the self-protrait mission the guest rhymes kept to a minimum, with just a couple worthy appearances, courtesy Verbal Kent and Fashawn. Ornette ColemanMusic Of Ornette Coleman – Forms & Sounds/Skies Of America ... CD
Sony/BGO (UK), 1967/1972. New Copy 2CDs ... $8.99 16.99
A great couple of harder-to-find Ornette Coleman records – nicely paired up in a 2CD set! First up is The Music Of Ornette Coleman, from 1967 – which is beautiful record that serves as both a showcase for Ornette's "serious" writing efforts – and his ability to play with a larger ensemble! It kicks off with Ornette playing trumpet solos with The Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet as they perform his "Forms & Sounds" live. That's followed by recordings of Ornette's "Space Flight" and "Saints & Soldiers" performed by The Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia Quartet, a string ensemble that brings a new light to Ornette's compositions! Skies Of America is an ambitious record with full orchestra, in a haunting sound that's light years from any of his smaller group recordings of the 60s and 70s! There's an incredible feel to the strings used here – played by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Measham – all tied up and dark, with swirling sounds that run up beautifully from the bottom, then take off to the skies promised in the title – opening the door for Ornette to come in and solo freely over the top – in a magical mix that easily makes the record a standout in his long and mighty career! Harmolodic theory is definitely a part of Coleman's conception here – but in very different ways than his quartet or quintet recordings. Lots of tracks on this one, including "Skies Of America", "The Men Who Live In The White House", "Sunday In America", "Dreams", "Native Americans", "Silver Screen", "The Artist In America" and more. Elvin Jones/Jimmy Garrison SextetIllumination! ... CD
Impulse, 1963. Used ... $8.99
An amazingly unique little group – one that kind of stepped in the Impulse Records back door from the Coltrane galaxy, but which features some very unique aspects overall! As the cover states, the ensemble's led by bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones – and also features McCoy Tyner from Coltrane's quartet – yet the real charm of the record comes from the reed men, who include Prince Lasha on flute and clarinet, Sonny Simmons on alto and English horn, and Charles Davis on baritone sax! All players are free-thinking modernists, with ties to some of the farther reaches of 60s jazz – yet they work here in a beautifully inside mode, similar to Lasha's excellent Insight album on CBS UK – a vibe that takes all the most wonderful aspects of the Coltrane generation, but pushes them even further with some deeply personal expressions. Tracks include the seminal "Half & Half" – plus "Aborigine Dance In Scotland", "Oriental Flower", and "Nuttin Out Jones", and "Gettin On Way". CD

A beautifully dynamic set from Mohamed Issa Haji – aka Matona – a musician from Zanzibar with a specialty in Taarab, which is an unusual hybrid of African, Arabic, and Indian musical styles! The group here features Matona on oud, vocals, and percussion – illuminated by very colorful elements from guitar, tenor, bass, drums, violin, and percussion – plus vocals from the rest of the group as well – and Gora Mohamed Gora plays the rich-voiced qanun on three of the album's ten tracks, which adds this depth to the record that's amazing! Instrumental passages dominate more than the vocals – and there's some really fantastic interplay between some of the Norwegian musicians in the group too – on titles that include "Aziza", "Sikitiko", "Alaminadura", "Zena", "Ashairejea", and "Ashiki Baya". Donald Sturge Anthony McKenzie II is a powerhouse here on drums – working his way over the kit with a massive sense of force, even when things are mellow – clearly employing a wide variety of elements to keep his sound open and fresh! There's only one number here that features solo drums from Donald – and the rest are all longer tracks, each featuring a key contribution from an established member of the downtown scene – Elliott Sharp on guitar, Bill Laswell on bass, and Vernon Reid on guitar – who each duet with McKenzie on a number apiece, and really bring sort of an old school, almost Knitting Factory vibe to the set. And by that, we mean that classic venue in the 80s – at a time when everything it and its musicians were doing was very fresh and creative! A gem of a record from flute player Lloyd McNeil – an artist who flourished strongly during the spiritual jazz scene of the 70s, but who also seemed to always have his own sort of groove as well! Lloyd blows with the complexity and far-reaching sounds of contemporaries in the loft jazz scene, but he also opens up with more of a modal groove on most of these tracks too – a great pulse from a hip rhythm section that features Dom Salvador on piano, Cecil McBee on drums, Brian Brake on drums – and both Portinho and Ray Armando on percussion – players who add sensitive, subtle elements to the music to really resonate with the flute! Lloyd's sound is wonderful throughout – sometimes with the soulful focus of Roland Kirk, sometimes more open and cosmic, ala Prince Lasha – all depending on the special rhythms of the tunes. Nana MouskouriVoice Of Greece (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $9.99
A huge amount of early work from Nana Mouskouri – a singer who looked a bit like a librarian, with glasses to match – but who managed to catapult to huge global fame in the 60s and 70s! Part of that fame was due to the fact that Nana was not only a great singer, but also graced with a strong command of other languages too – which helped her score big on charts all over Europe, and in other parts of the globe. Yet this set focuses strongly on Mouskouri's earliest work in her native Greece – with lyrics all in Greek, which may come as quite a surprise if you only know some of Nana's bigger songs in French, English, or other languages. The backings often have a nicely understated quality – some folkloric elements hitting more modern arrangements, sometimes with a great current of jazz that really lights things up – and the 3CD package features 77 tracks in all, complete with notes – selections from albums that include The Voice Of Greece, Epitaphois & More Songs Of Her Homeland, Greece Dreamland Of Desire, and Pashalies Mesa Apo Tin Nekri Gi. A great moment in the career of the mighty Leon Ware – a set recorded after his famous 70s work for Motown, and before his return to fame at Elektra – but still with a super-tight quality that shows that Leon was always great, no matter what the setting! A fantastic assortment of contemporary soul – put together by one of the labels who kept the underground soul groove going, long before the generation of Neo Soul! Expansion Records is a London-based imprint who started out recording American soul artists from the 70s who were still going strong, but who were ignored by US labels in the 80s – then, as the years progressed, the label continued to find newer artists to work with too – at a level that made them one of the first companies to really push the idea of contemporary soul at a level that was far from the charts – which resulted in the kind of legacy that makes this 3CD set such a treasure. Most of the cuts here are from recent Expansion projects, and the set also includes gems from other sources too – and some classic cuts from their older catalog – all wrapped together in a great package for the price. Titles include "Go Tell It On The Mountain/Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Gregory Porter & Anita Wilson, "The Christmas Song" by Ne Yo & Tasha Cobbs, "It's Christmas Time" by Smokey Robinson & Kevin Ross, "This Christmas" by Brian Courtney Wilson & Gene Moore, "Angels We Have Heard On Hihg" by Kierra Sheard & Chrisette Michele, "Mary Did You Know" by India Arie & Gene Moore, "O Holy Night" by Smokie Norful, "O Come All Ye Faithful" by Tasha Cobbs, and "Bethlehem" by Kem & Janice Gaines. VariousNairobi Calling – Selected Recordings 1976 to 1996 ... LP
No Wahala Sounds (UK), Late 70s/1980s/1990s. New Copy ... $19.99
A revelatory selection of tracks recorded on a Nairobi music scene that was really overflowing with creative energy – so much so that the music here doesn't just come from Kenyan talents, but from Tanzania and the Congo as well! There's a positive spirit that imbues most of the grooves – sounds that are upbeat and pulsating with rhythm – yet also put together at a level that's never too commercial at all – especially resisting the temptations that over-polished so much other music from the continent during the big world music boom of the 80s. Instead, these tunes revel in long, open interplay between guitars, bass, percussion, and voice – on selections that include "Ochieng DJ Komoro" by Victoria Chomeka, "Maria" by Orchestra Moja One Band, "Remmy Belesa" by Biashara Jazz Band, "Gilbert Wambida" by International De Nelly, "Amemiki (part 2)" by Orchestra Bana Ekanga, and "Nakuomba" by Baba Ilunga Wa Ilunga – a lost archive track, which appears here for the first time ever. Harmless (UK), 1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s. New Copy ... $11.99
A great little Holiday soul compilation – one that's heavy on gems from vintage years, but which also features a few surprising cuts of more recent vintage as well! The package was put together by the folks at Harmless, and it's got the same care as their excellent soul reissues – a very thoughtful lineup of 20 tracks that includes "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" by Ann Sexton, "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" by The Impressions, "Merry Christmas Baby" by Otis Redding, "My Gift To You" by Alexander O'Neal, "Christmas Time Is Here Again" by The Flirtations, "You & Me This Christmas" by Natasha Watts, "I Love Christmas" by Eugene Wilde, "Let It Snow" by Boyz II Men with Brian McKnight, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" by The Whispers, "This Christmas" by Stephanie Mills, "I Want To Come Home For Christmas" by Marvin Gaye, and "Cold Cold Winter In The Ghetto" by Lonnie Hill. VariousSugar & Spice – 14 Studio One Rocksteady Sure Shots ... LP
Studio One/Rockashacka (Japan), Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $29.99
Some of the first great sounds to come from the legendary Studio One Records – an assortment of early rocksteady singles, including a fair bit of rare gems we've never heard before! These rocksteady tracks are the precursor to later reggae work from Jamaica – and show a strong influence from American soul and R&B, especially on the vocals – mixed with more of the slow-loping grooves that would later explode to global prominence in the 70s. The production style is great – very spare and laidback – almost at the same level as American soul indie labels of the time, which makes for an especially great focus on the vocals, especially on the collection's good number of harmony tracks. Titles include "Soulful Music" by The Invadors, "Sugar & Spice" by The Viceroys, "Happy Organ" by Soul Vendors, "I Make A Woman" by The Kingstonians, "Mama Didn't Know" by The Termites, "You're Gonna Lose" by The Octaves, "Reel Up" by Bumps Orkley, and "Reel Up" by The Wigglers. VariousSun Shines On Hank Williams ... CD
Sun/Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99
The great Hank Williams had an undeniable impact on country music in the 50s – so much so that he also left a big mark on the early Sun Records artists too – quite a surprise, given how many of them were great songwriters on their own! This wonderful set brings together many rare Sun recordings of Hank Williams tunes – some by Sun stars, some by the more obscure rockabilly artists who issued rare singles on the label – all handled in the best Bear Family style, which means great notes and excellent sound – plus a fair bit of previously unreleased tunes as well! In fact, the unissued material takes up the bigger part of the set – which makes the whole thing a great discovery, even for Sun Records completitsts. The package features 26 tracks in all – and titles include "Cold Cold Heart" by Barbara Pittman, "Long Gone Lonesome Blues" by Jerry Lee Lewis, "My Bucket's Got A Hole In It (alt)" by Sonny Burgess, "I Could Never Be Ashamed Of You (undubbed alt)" by Johnny Cash, "I Saw The Light" by Eddie Bond, "Setting The Woods On Fire" by Jerry Lee Lewis, "There'll Be No Teardrops Tonight" by Carl McVoy, "Your Cheatin Heart (demo)" by Jeannie Greene, "You Win Again" by David Wilkins, "Hey Good Lookin" by Eddie Cash, "Half As Much (demo)" by Hank Davis, "I Can't Help It" by Jeb Stuart, and "Dear John" by Warren Smith. ✨✧ Bobby Blue BlandFurther On Up The Road – The Duke Recordings 1955 to 1962 ... CD
Southern Routes, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There's nobody like Bobby Blue Bland on Duke Records – especially during the early years that are featured on this collection! Bland came out of Memphis with a very unique, really amazing sound right from the start – an approach to blues that was a lot more sophisticated than most of his contemporaries, even those on the LA scene – with lots of jazz in his phrasing, and his backings as well – and this sublime vocal approach that often had Bobby growling in a way that seemed to come from deep down in the depths of his soul, but never in any sort of gimmicky sort of style. Bland was always the perfect balance of cool, class, and outright blues power – and that was never more true than on these sides. 2CD set features a whopping 57 tracks in all – with titles that include "It's My Life Baby", "Honey Bee", "I'm Not Ashamed", "Is It Real", "I Can't Put You Down Baby", "Don't Want No Woman", "Loan Me A Helping Hand", "Bobby's Blues", "You've Got Bad Intentions", "I'll Take Care Of You", "Cry Cry Cry", "You're Worth It All", "That's The Way Love Is", "Call On Me", "Blue Moon", "I've Just Got To Forget You", and "How Does A Cheatin Woman Feel". ✨✧ Eric DolphyIron Man (painted cover) ... LP
Douglas, 1962. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A seminal set from Eric Dolphy – one of his most perfectly realized moments at the head of a larger ensemble – and a record that definitely set the tone for countless spiritual jazz sessions of the 70s! Dolphy recorded this session for Alan Douglas in 1962, and it features a larger array of players than you'll find on most of his records for other labels – the cream of the "new thing" players that were around New York at the time, including Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Woody Shaw on trumpet, Prince Lasha on flute, Sonny Simmons on alto, and even Clifford Jordan on soprano sax – making a rare appearance on record on that instrument! Together, the players create a set of soundscapes that lies somewhere between Dolphy's Out To Lunch album, and some of the more modernist work by Mingus – a stunning batch of tracks that go out, but never too far. Titles include "Ode to CP", "Burning Spear", "Iron Man", and "Mandrake". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dusko Goykovich with Nathan Davis & Mal WaldronSwinging Macedonia ... LP
Enja/Be! (Germany), 1966. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A legendary German session from the 60s – and a record that really showcases the unusual criss-crossing of modes that was going on in the European scene at the time! There's a very strong MPS vibe here – as trumpeter Dusko Goykovich leads a swinging sextet that includes Nathan Davis on flute, soprano, and tenor – blowing some tremendously soulful reed lines – plus incredible rhythms from Mal Waldron on piano, Peter Trunk on bass, and Cees See on drums. The record's an attempt to bring traditional Macedonian rhythms into a jazz perspective – but with players like these, it swings in a way any Macedonian album never could – damn soulful, and with a great exotic vibe. Davis is especially great, and plays in a soaring modal vein that's similar to his work on his classic MPS sides, and on the records he cut in America in the early 70s. The album's a beautiful session that often get's overlooked because it blends it with the Enja catalog – but it's really more of a record that belongs in an MPS reissue series, and is a great lost groover that's waiting to be rediscovered by the Dusty Groove crowd. Titles include "Macedonia", "Old Fisherman's Daughter", "Jumbo Uganda", "Bem Basha", "Saga Se karame", and "The Nights Of Skopje". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John Lewis & Sacha DistelAfternoon In Paris ... LP
Atlantic, 1956. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
We would gladly trade every other John Lewis album for a copy of this album – because the album's a treasure all the way through – and a really unique set, with a really unique feel! The session features Lewis' piano in the company of a hip French group that includes Sasha Distel on guitar, Pierre Michelot on bass, and the great Barney Wilen on tenor – all great players who bring out a whole new side of Lewis' genius! Wilen's solos alone are worth the price of the album – deeply soulful, with a resonant tone that's some of his greatest on record – and an easy illustration of why he was one of the few European players of the postwar years to get big notice on this side of the Atlantic. But amazingly, Sacha Distel's also great here too – and despite the fact that he later went onto become a vocal pop star, Distel displays a beautiful approach to jazz guitar that makes us wish we had more sessions of his from these days. Titles include "Afternoon In Paris", "I Cover The Waterfront", and "All The Things You Are" – but don't let the titles alone speak for the record, because every track is beautiful! Interscope, 1994. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The first and only volume from Tupac's Thug Life group – with Big Syke, Macadoshis, Mopreme, The Rated R guest appearances by YNV & Nate Dogg – raw street rap with an uncommonly soulful backdrop for the time! Thug Life came out in the midst of the early 90s gangsta rap media backlash, and whether or the final track list was a result of that or not, the mix of hardcore rhymes with some more tender soul samples of The O'Jays, Curtis Mayfield and more on a few tracks give a more contemplative vibe here and there – and Tupac is at near peak charismatic flow on his turns at the mic, too. Includes "Bury Me A G" with Natasha Walker of YNV, "Don't Get It Twisted", "Pour Out A Little Liquor", "Stay True", "Under Pressure", "Street Fame", "Cradle To The Grave", "Str8 Ballin'". ✨✧ VariousWelcome To Paradise – Italian Dream House 1989 to 1993 Vol 2 ... LP
Safe Trip (Netherlands), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at this sometimes-missed chapter in Italian music – a moment when the Italo Club sound of the 80s had transformed into a scene that gave us some of the cleanest, leanest house music of the time! Earlier Italian imports had a big impact on the birth of house music in Chicago – and a few years later, those forward-thinking sounds were used to bring a needed revamp to Italian club as well – as you'll hear in these wonderfully-executed cuts that often have the best spare sounds of the US underground, mixed with some classic elements that warm things up in a mighty nice way! Both volumes are filled with well-chosen cuts that never got the kind of attention they should have at the time – and titles on this second part include "Welcome To Paradise (nightfly version)" by Z99, "Trasparenza" by Extreme, "Il Sole (deep mix)" by Q Base, "Dreams (club)" by The Sky, "Elements" by Leo Anibaldi, "Somnambulism" by Morenas, "Emotions" by 707 Boys, "A Key To Heaven For A Heavenly Trance" by Sasha, and "Octivation" by Transitive Elements. Killer couple tracks by the Anemic Boyfriends – both boisterous blasts of all girl teen punk circa the early 80s – from Anchorage, Alaska of all places! Led by singer Louise Disease, The Anemic Boyfriends could've been the rightful inheritors of the throne left unoccupied by the breakup of the Runaways – and we're not saying that just because they're a group of young girls in a raw rock scene that had too few female-led groups – for the way they so savagely bust boundaries with rebellious underage lyricism and are unashamed of rocking out with a glam rock & garage rock inspired sound, as opposed to punk boilerplate. 7-inch, Vinyl record

The tracks here are a perfect balance of Dolphy in his final year – with some spiritual jazz currents, but still a strong sense of swing – with a fantastic lineup that includes Prince Lasha on flute, Sonny Simmons on alto, Clifford Jordan on soprano, Woody Shaw on trumpet, Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Richard Davis on bass, and both JC Moses and Charles Moffett on drums – almost a who's-who of people who would go onto shape the face of jazz in years to come. Smalls Live, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums we've ever heard from trombonist Frank Lacy – an artist who hardly ever takes the spotlight as a leader, but who really shines at the helm of this amazing set! The group has a depth of feeling that takes us back to some of Lacy's more spiritual projects of previous years – but they also swing with the solid, soulful groove of the best of the Smalls Live series – a perfect balance between Frank's arrangements and larger musical ideas, and all the spontaneous energy of the musicians in the venue! Players include Josh Evans on trumpet, Stacy Dillard on tenor, Theo Hill on piano, Rashaan Carter on bass, and Kush Abadey on drums – and tracks are all nice and long, in the best Smalls spirit.
