✨✧ Asha PuthliAsha Puthli (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
CBS/Mr Bongo (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
A fantastic bit of female funk from the 70s – and a set that was recorded in Germany by a very exotic singer! The album is Asha Puthli's first – and includes some unusual interpretations of work by JJ Cale, John Lennon, Bill Withers, and George Harrison – plus a great tune of her own – set to these cool backings that have lots of spacey electric modes blended with smoother funk passages – kind of a precursor to later Munich disco modes, but with a slower, slinkier feel. Asha's voice is very weird – a bit in the "love to love you baby" mode, and with a range of sounds that moves up and down the scale almost as much as Minnie Riperton. The record's got a nice mix of jazzy arrangements, and Asha's unique high-pitched vocals work great on tracks like "Lies", "Right Down Here", "I Dig Love", "Truth", "I Am A Song", "Let Me In Your Life", and "This Is Your Life". Asha PuthliL'Indiana ... CD
Dash/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $22.99
The only album ever issued in the US by European soul singer Asha Pulthi – an artist who was doing some great spacey funk in the mid 70s, then made a strong shift into tighter grooves in the disco years! This album's a great blend of Asha's earlier vocal style and some of the newer clubby sounds from Euro clubs – kind of a mix of porno sleaze and Munich soul – and the arrangements have enough of a funky kick in them to keep things interesting – and a vibe that really warrants the record coming out on TK over here in the US! Titles include "Mr Moonlight", "Music Machine", "There Is A Party Tonight", "Legend Of Thais", and "I'll See You Around". CD

RD BurmanMukti ... CD
Subah Zindagi (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
A classic soundtrack from Indian film composer Rahul Dev Burman – and one that reminds us just how important the voice was to the format over the years! Unlike some Bollywood soundtracks, which have long upbeat songs that are driving the dance numbers in the film – this score has a fair bit of mellower tracks, which really seem to bring out the best of the famous singers in the music – a lineup that includes Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Mohammad Rafi, and Kishore Kumar. Titles include "Dil Sajan Jalta Hai", "Pvar Hai Ik Nishan Qadmon Ka (part 1)", "Dance Music", "Lalla Lalla Lori Doodh Ki Katori", and "Suhani Chandni Raten". CD

Charlie MarianoMirror ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1972. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
A seminal electric session from Charlie Mariano – one recorded after his shift from bop-based work into trippier, more psychedelic influences – and one of his few American dates from the time! The record has Charlie working on soprano and alto sax, with a group that includes Pat Rebillot on electric piano and organ, Tony Levine on bass, and David Spinozza on guitar – all grooving along with the reeds in a stretched-out, tripped-out kind of way – a mixture of jazz and some Eastern influences, but always held together nicely – without some of the overindulgence of some other Mariano records from the period. Charlie's solos are still icy as ever, but much freer than on his classic work, and with definite post-Coltrane influences – and titles include "Madras", "Himalaya", "Vasi Bindu", and "Mirror", which has vocals by Asha Pulthi! Lloyd McNeillElegia ... CD
Baobab/Soul Jazz (UK), 1980. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A superb record from the great Lloyd McNeil – one of the more obscure players of the spiritual jazz generation of the 70s, but an artist who always gave us his best whenever he walked into the studio! Here, the mood is a mix of modal and Latin elements, with a definite current of influence from Brazil – thanks in part to the presence of Dom Salvador on piano and Nana Vasconcelos on percussion – in a lineup that also features Cecil McBee on bass, and Claudio Celso on guitar. The real star, though, is clearly Lloyd – whose flute solos are some of his most complex, expressive on record – very soulful, but at a level that hardly recalls any other player we can think of – very fitting for the personal themes of the tunes. Titles include "Samba For The Animals", "Asha II", "Memory Cycle", and "Elegiac Suite For Elizabeth". CD

VariousPsych Funk Sa Re Ga! – Seminar – Aesthetic Expressions Of Psychedelic Funk Music In India 1970 to 1983 ... CD
World Psychedelic Classics, 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $8.99 17.98
A funky psychedelic kaliedoscope of grooves from India – killer numbers from the 70s and into the early 80s – Psych Funk Sa-Re-Ga, from the folks who put together the equally heavy Psych-Funk 101 and Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas compilations! Most of cuts here have a raw, fuzzed out undercurrent of psychedelia – guitars that buzz or lead searingly, depending on the needs of the number – with heavy, funk-based drums and/or hand percussion with rumbling bass rhythms. From that core, they bust out mightily with more furious percussion, rhythms, mad horn arrangements, and vocals that work as either a sweetener or for even more wild-eyed excitement! In short, global psychedelic funk rhythms with regional Indian folk and classical flourishes, blended with mod, soul, garage and soundtrack influences from around the globe. It's a funky, psychedelic fusion of east and west that's billed as a seminar, but this is no academic endeavor – it's a psych funk party all the way! Includes "The Mod Trade" by The Black Beats, "Psychedelia" by X'Lents, "Somebody To Love – Edit" and "Gairaag Dance Music – Edit" by Kalyanji Anandji, "Dance Music From Hare Rama Hare Krishna" by RD Burman, "Lekar Ham Diwana Dil" by RD Burman feat Asha Bhosle & Kishore Kumar, "Mary Long" by Atomic Forest, "Dharmatma Theme Music" by Kalyanji Anandji, "Phir Teri Yaad" by Hemant Bhosle feat Asha Bhosle, "Thanimayil" by Ilaiyaraaja fet Vani Jairam & Chorus and more. 20 tracks in all – with a thick booklet of notes on each track, plus loads of photos, original album & poster art, and more. A great little Bollywood soundtrack by one of key composers of the genre – and one that's still got all the right sort of elements you might expect! There's some really great upbeat tracks – nice groovers that even get a bit funky at times – and which have a few cool instrumental flourishes that really make the album a gem! The best of these is probably the 7 minute "Pyar Zindagi Hai", which has great wah-wah guitar – and some vocals by Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle – but there's nice guitar at other moments too, and other tracks include "O Saathi Re", "Zindagi To Bewafa Hai", "Dil To Hai Dil", and "Rote Hue Aate Hain Sab". ✨✧ VariousEthiopian Hit Parade Vol 1 ... LP
Ahma/Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A seminal album of sounds from the groundbreaking Ethiopian scene at the start of the 70s – a full length collection of previous 45s from the excellent Ahma Records label – home to revolutionary sounds that continue to influence new generations of listeners! The music here represents the Golden Age at its peak – sounds that partly reform older traditions with new modernist ideals, partly shift sideways from western influences, to the sorts of enigmatic, other-worldly styles you'd know from the music of Mulatu and some of his contemporaries! And lest you think that "hit parade" means commercial crass, think again – because these tunes are every bit as mindblowing as the music you'd find on the seminal Ethiopiques series. Titles include "Addis Abeda Bete" by Alemayehu Eshete, "Tezeta" by Seifu Yohannes, "Yeberehe Lomie" by Abayneh Degene, "Gara Ser Naw Betesh" by Teshome Meteku, "Asha Dedawo" by Menelik Wossenachew, "Ayamaru Eshete" by Essatu Tessema, and "Hedech Alu" by Muluken Melesse. ✨✧ VariousBombay Disco 2 ... CD
Cultures Of Soul, 1980s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Bombay grooves, but not just the disco promised in the title – as these cuts come mostly from the 80s years of Bollywood, and show Indian funk moving into a great new realm of styles! There's definitely a disco vibe at the core – and as in other scenes, the style stayed current a lot longer in India than it did in the US – but there's also some other great 80s elements at play, including some electro touches, bits of house, and even some bits that feel more like indie boogie material than the usual Bollywood groove! Together, the tracks are a real revelation – and push our understanding of Indian film grooves way past any simple cliches – and also have inspired us to start digging for these overlooked gems from later years too. The package comes with notes and images of the records – and titles include "Tadeer Ka Bashah" by Bappi Lahiri, "Aaya Sanam Aaya Deewana Tera" by Kishore Humar, "Pass Ao Na" by Asha Bhosle, "Saat Samundar Paar" by Sadhana Sargam, "Hotel Mein Bottle" by Sharda, "Dance Music" by Hridaynath Mageshkar, "Jab Chaye" by Asha Bhosle, "Main Jaadugar" by Kumar Sanu & Jolly Mukherjee, and "Disco Music" by RD Burman. A series of extended song medleys from Nigerian musician Idowu Animashaun – tracks that mix together wispy guitar, light percussion, and vocals that playfully deal with a variety of themes! The style here isn't nearly as heavy-hitting as that of Idowu's 70s contemporaries – especially those on the Afro Funk scene – but that's also an appealing aspect of the work. The set features 12 titles in all, presented in 3 different medley performances – with tracks that include "Apola Tuned", "B'Eo Mokun", "Spnc", "Ori Bami Se Temi", "Igba Mba Jo", "Chief Adeleke Oshijinrin", "Ale Mi Karora", and "Odidere Loga Ede". Prince Lasha EnsembleInsight ... CD
Columbia/Dusty Groove, 1966. New Copy ... $6.99 12.98
Tremendous work from the legendary Prince Lasha – a rare UK-only date from 1966 – and one that has the reedman working away from more familiar contemporaries like Sonny Simmons and Eric Dolphy! The approach on this session is very unique – as Lasha includes harp with the instrumentation, played by David Snell in a style that's right up there with Dorothy Ashby's best jazz work. Pianist Stan Tracey is also on board – playing beautiful notes that have a sharp modern edge, while still falling on the inside of the spectrum – and Lasha himself is especially great – blowing plastic alto sax and wooden flute, both of which have a slightly offbeat sound – but one that's surprisingly warm, which makes the album one of his most sensitive and soulful sessions ever! The tunes are a mix of standards and originals – and there's a wonderful sense of balance here – sounds that are sometimes more inside than other records from Lasha, but which have a really Dolphy-like sense of expression – right at home amidst a wider history of jazz, yet also reaching for new ideas at the same time. Pure genius throughout, and a record that was never made available to audiences in the US. Titles include "Nuttin Out Jones", "Impressions Of Eric Dolphy", "Out Of Nowhere", "Just Friends", "Body & Soul", and "Everything Happens To Me". CD

A rare set from reed genius Prince Lasha – one that dovetails nicely with the albums on the Birdseye label, and which features Lasha in a very similar setting! (In truth, the records may have some overlap – but we're not entirely sure.) The tracks are very long, and the record really shows the developing spiritual side of Prince's talents – that slightly warmer, more deeply soulful style than his 60s work with Sonny Simmons – as Lasha blows flute, alto, and baritone – in a group that features Hubert Eaves on piano, Ron Carter on bass, Roy McCurdy on drums, and Kenny Nash on percussion! The record has a very spiritual approach – never "out", but exploratory and searching – and tracks include "For The Child", "Search For Tomorrow", and "Mayflower". CD

Sansu/Charly (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $14.99 17.98
Think you know Huey Piano Smith? Think again – as this massively overstuffed set shows that there's plenty more to discover! Instead of Huey's over-reissued New Orleans tracks from the early years, this package brings together late 60s soul and raw 70s funk – a lesser-known side of Smith's career, and proof that he had plenty of greatness to offer well into the 70s! There's still plenty of heavy Crescent City soul at the bottom of the grooves – but Huey also really takes off in a fast flurry of new styles too – some modes that get increasingly hip on the second half of the collection, as the tunes take on plenty of wonderful 70s funk elements. As with other Charly collections, there's a huge amount of material here – a whopping 45 tracks, packaged in a book-styled cover with a very vivid booklet – and titles that include "Ballad Of A Black Man", "The Whatcha Call Em (ext version)", "Don't You Just Know It", "Funky Funky Football", "High Blood Pressure", "Coo Coo Over You", "You Ain't No Hippie", "Smile For Me", "Twowaypockaway (parts 1 & 2)", "Eight Bars Of Amen", "Epitaph Of Uncle Tom", "Bury Me Dead", "Baby You Hurt Me", "Young Blood", and "We Like Mambo". A rare treasure from spiritual reedman Prince Lasha – a session recorded in 1965 in New York, but one that wasn't issued until many years later by the Enja label in Germany! The album is a real revelation – and clearly marks Lasha as one of the key artists unlocking the more spiritual sounds in jazz at the time – taking off nicely from the later work of Eric Dolphy, and dovetailing with some of the best experiments of John Coltrane – but at a level that maybe even leapfrogs into more 70s modes as well! The group here is great – a quartet with Herbie Hancock on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Jimmy Lovelace on drums – and Lasha plays both alto and flute, in modes that echo his best work with Sonny Simmons, and on his later solo albums too. We love this group – and with each new record, they give us reason to love them even more – and realize that their totality is even greater than the sum of their many all-star parts! The lineup alone is enough – Wayne Escoffery on tenor, Jeremy Pelt on trombone, James Burton III on trombone, Victor Gould on piano, Rashaan Carter on bass, and Mark Whitfield on drums – but together, they sound even more amazing – kind of crackling and bristling with energy, as if the players are keenly engaged in each other's company – not in a competitive way, but with a collaborative energy that even tops most other groups comprised of leaders in a single combo! Soaring colors are balanced by beautiful depths – and titles include "Iron Man", "For The Kids", "No Words Needed", "Twin Towers", "Involuntary Servitude", "Mr Willis", and "Ascension". CD

Hip hop is still at the core of the set – thanks to rhymes from Blu and always-great production from Exile – but there's all these other musical elements in the mix, too – never forced or overdone, but used in a way that really helps expand the Cali soul quality that's always been at the core of their music. A seminal set from Eric Dolphy – one of his most perfectly realized moments at the head of a larger ensemble – and a record that definitely set the tone for countless spiritual jazz sessions of the 70s! Dolphy recorded this session for Alan Douglas in 1962, and it features a larger array of players than you'll find on most of his records for other labels – the cream of the "new thing" players that were around New York at the time, including Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Woody Shaw on trumpet, Prince Lasha on flute, Sonny Simmons on alto, and even Clifford Jordan on soprano sax – making a rare appearance on record on that instrument! Together, the players create a set of soundscapes that lies somewhere between Dolphy's Out To Lunch album, and some of the more modernist work by Mingus – a stunning batch of tracks that go out, but never too far. Together, the players create a set of soundscapes that lies somewhere between Dolphy's Out To Lunch album, and some of the more modernist work by Mingus – a stunning batch of tracks that go out, but never too far. Titles include "Ode to CP", "Burning Spear", "Iron Man", and "Mandrake". LP, Vinyl record album

Fertile GroundField Songs – Revisited ... CD
Blackout, 1998/2005. Used ... $9.99
A beautifully remastered version of the fantastic first album by Fertile Ground – a stunning debut that's one of the best underground soul albums of the past decade! The record dips back into a spiritual jazzy tradition that encompasses work by artists like Doug Carn or Earth Wind & Fire, but it's also got a rawer edge that works perfectly with the righteousness of the group's message. Vocalist Navasha D Boxley has a style that ranks with the best of our favorite singers – like Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jean Carn, and Carmen Lundy – and she's backed by sublime keyboard work by James Collins, and intricately jazzy drumming by Marcus Asante. A great set all the way through – and filled with wonderful cuts like "Ghetto Butterflies", "Sweet Melodies", "En Hiver", "Lovin You", "Soulmates", and "Black Sunshine". This new version really increases the sound from the original – pushing up the best strengths of the record through newly-mixed takes, in a way that gives the vocals even more power! CD

HE3 ProjectChapter Two (digipack version) ... CD
Family Groove, Mid 70s. Used ... $6.99
A second chapter of excellent jazzy soul from the HE3 (Herman Eberitzch III) Project – killer stuff recorded from 1974 to 1977 at Different Fur Studios in San Francisco – with a sound that blends intense, yet sultry disco era live soul with both jazzier and funkier sounds! HE is on piano, Rhodes, synths – and the vibe on Chapter Two has moments of jazz funk reminiscent of the previous Chapter One set from Family Groove – but others that have a straight up, live and direct modern live soul feel, and others that are straight up jazzy. It's all great stuff – and alternate group lineups throughout include vocalists Johnny Lyvett, Linda Tillery and Wendy Hass, trombone player Sheldon Bermont, sax players Robert Olivera and Jerry Vejmoja, percussionist John Mingo Lewis, guitarist Pat Duffy, drummer Amadeus Barrios and others. Includes "Thesis On Love", Soul Support", "From Africa To Oakland", "Try A Different Road", "It Came From The Clear Blue Sky", "Sashay Sahay", "She Got You By The Hook', "I Know You", "Inspiration", "Make It Sweet", "Hop Skip & Jump", "Summertime" & "High Life". In The TraditionTradition Continues ... CD
AFJ, 2009. Used ... $9.99
A killer set from the contemporary Detroit jazz underground – and a set that smokes just like some of that city's classics from the Tribe Records years of the 70s! In The Tradition are a group who definitely get their name right – as they play here with just the right sort of spiritual, righteous jazz modes you'd guess from the title – using mostly acoustic instrumentation, in a batch of original tunes with a mighty deep feel! There's definitely some free-thinking players in the combo, but things never go too outside – and overall, the record's pretty darn swinging – with a lineup that includes Charles Hopkins on trumpet and flugelhorn, Olujimi Tafaoana on saxes and flute, Vicki Alexander and Mark Berger on baritone sax, Melanie White on trombone, and Brad Shearer on piano – plus some great percussion, and a slight bit of vocals. The use of trombones and baritone give the record some great lower-end sounds – which seems to further deepen its spirit – and titles include "Mashaka", "Vanessa", "Damani's Dance", "Blues For Nat Turner", "The Song Of The Maasai", and "Yurugu". Elvin Jones/Jimmy Garrison SextetIllumination! ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1963. New Copy ... $19.99
An amazingly unique little group – one that kind of stepped in the Impulse Records back door from the Coltrane galaxy, but which features some very unique aspects overall! As the cover states, the ensemble's led by bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones – and also features McCoy Tyner from Coltrane's quartet – yet the real charm of the record comes from the reed men, who include Prince Lasha on flute and clarinet, Sonny Simmons on alto and English horn, and Charles Davis on baritone sax! All players are free-thinking modernists, with ties to some of the farther reaches of 60s jazz – yet they work here in a beautifully inside mode, similar to Lasha's excellent Insight album on CBS UK – a vibe that takes all the most wonderful aspects of the Coltrane generation, but pushes them even further with some deeply personal expressions. Tracks include the seminal "Half & Half" – plus "Aborigine Dance In Scotland", "Oriental Flower", and "Nuttin Out Jones", and "Gettin On Way". CD

Hubert LawsWild Flower (Label M pressing) ... CD
Atlantic/Label M, 1972. Used ... $9.99
Flute, strings, and soul – a wonderful counterpart to some of Hubert Laws' funkier albums of the time – and a record cut with some tremendous backings! The core group features Hubert on assorted flutes, Gary Burton on vibes, Chick Corea on piano, and Bernard Purdie on drums – all augmented by larger string backings arranged and conducted by John Murtaugh, with a dark-tinged style that's a bit in the mode of some of the work at the time by William S Fischer, but with a sound that's even moodier and more introspective. Laws' work on flute is a brilliant example of understatement – lots of space between the notes, and a rich exploration of sound that's completely mindboggling! Jazzland (Norway), 2018. Used ... $11.99
A beautifully dynamic set from Mohamed Issa Haji – aka Matona – a musician from Zanzibar with a specialty in Taarab, which is an unusual hybrid of African, Arabic, and Indian musical styles! The group here features Matona on oud, vocals, and percussion – illuminated by very colorful elements from guitar, tenor, bass, drums, violin, and percussion – plus vocals from the rest of the group as well – and Gora Mohamed Gora plays the rich-voiced qanun on three of the album's ten tracks, which adds this depth to the record that's amazing! Instrumental passages dominate more than the vocals – and there's some really fantastic interplay between some of the Norwegian musicians in the group too – on titles that include "Aziza", "Sikitiko", "Alaminadura", "Zena", "Ashairejea", and "Ashiki Baya". Donald Sturge Anthony McKenzie II is a powerhouse here on drums – working his way over the kit with a massive sense of force, even when things are mellow – clearly employing a wide variety of elements to keep his sound open and fresh! There's only one number here that features solo drums from Donald – and the rest are all longer tracks, each featuring a key contribution from an established member of the downtown scene – Elliott Sharp on guitar, Bill Laswell on bass, and Vernon Reid on guitar – who each duet with McKenzie on a number apiece, and really bring sort of an old school, almost Knitting Factory vibe to the set. And by that, we mean that classic venue in the 80s – at a time when everything it and its musicians were doing was very fresh and creative! Baobab/Soul Jazz (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A gem of a record from flute player Lloyd McNeil – an artist who flourished strongly during the spiritual jazz scene of the 70s, but who also seemed to always have his own sort of groove as well! Lloyd blows with the complexity and far-reaching sounds of contemporaries in the loft jazz scene, but he also opens up with more of a modal groove on most of these tracks too – a great pulse from a hip rhythm section that features Dom Salvador on piano, Cecil McBee on drums, Brian Brake on drums – and both Portinho and Ray Armando on percussion – players who add sensitive, subtle elements to the music to really resonate with the flute! Lloyd's sound is wonderful throughout – sometimes with the soulful focus of Roland Kirk, sometimes more open and cosmic, ala Prince Lasha – all depending on the special rhythms of the tunes. Titles include "Griot", "Salvation Army", "You Don't Know What Love Is", and "As A Matter Of Fact". CD

Morwell Unlimited/Prince Far I & The ArabsA1 Dub/Cry Tuff Dub Encounter Chapter IV (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Doctor Bird/Trojan (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of rare dub albums – back to back in a single set, with bonus tracks too! On A1 Dub, Blacka Morwell serves up some massive dub – working at Channel 1, for an obscure album on Trojan Records – but maybe coming across with some of the richness of the Island Records generation! There's a fullness to the sound that's wonderful – top-to-bottom completely solid, and often highly focused on the rhythms, but also always using one key instrumental element on each cut – a bit of organ here, a weeping guitar there, or even an odd sonic element – always given center stage in the spotlight, and set apart from the rest of the mix in a really great way. Titles include "Downtown Rebel", "Well Crucial", "Different Style", "West Side Ranking", "Pressure Rock", "Blackboard Jungle", and "Waterpump Skank". Next is Cry Tuff Dub Encounter 4 – from Prince Far I & The Arabs – an almost seamless set of dub instrumentals, recorded at Channel One in 1981 – the underground Jamaican groove, but maybe given a slightly better sound quality overall – that good mix of indie and professional that was the Trojan Records calling card as the 70s moved on! A crisp upfront production style separates this one from some of its dub predecessors – but the record has a great analog dub sound, with many effects and instruments echoing in and out of the mix. Titles include "Lion Stone", "Foundation Stepper", "Sound Gesture", "Destruction Sound Battle", and "Stone African Ground". And if that's not enough, the whole thing features a whole CD of bonus material – rare tracks taken from the 12" Attack series by Trojan Records – with cuts that include "Jammin For Survival" by Jammy's At The Controls, "Bali Hi Special" by The Sowell Radics, "Fuss & Fight Dub" by Eddie Fitzroy, "Ball Of Fire" by Bim Sherman, "Stand & Look Dub" by Fat Man All Stars, "Caring For My Sister" by Scientist & Roots Radics, "Won't You Come On (dub)" by Witty's All STars, "Babylon Wrong Dub" by Ashanti Waugh, and "Cool Pon Your Corner Version" by Barry Brown. Excellent remix version of Reel People's fantastic Retroflection – one that you can almost look to as an equally great alternative version of it – with remixes by Atjazz, John Morales, Terry Hunter, Tall Black Guy, DJ Spinna and others! The date's a live one, but there's a well-composed vibe to the set – almost echoes of earlier soul jazz styles on CTI and Atlantic – no surprise, given that the set features tracks by Freddie Hubbard and Bob James – but with a more personal vibe at times when Sasha Maskowski lends her vocals to the record. Impulse, 1969. Used ... $9.99
A brilliant little album from Archie Shepp – material recorded on a variety of dates at the end of the 60s, but packaged together as an extremely soulful set in the mid 70s! There's a feel here that rivals some of the best moments of the Attica Blues years – a mix of spiritual soul jazz and bolder modern moments – reigned in nicely from the freer Shepp sound of a few years before, and given a really righteous focus by the addition of vocals on some tracks. Archie sings a bit himself, and one number features Leon Thomas singing with Tasha Thomas and Doris Troy – a very odd meeting in the studio! Players include Woody Shaw, Jimmy Owens, Dave Burrell, Grachan Moncur III, and Wally Richardson – and the tracks even get a bit funky at times! Titles include an excellent version of "New Africa", which was recorded later in Paris by Grachan Moncur III – plus "Back Back", "Spoo Pee Doo", "Slow Drag", and Cal Massey's "Bakai". CD

Chiaroscuro, 1977. Very Good+ ... $24.99
An excellent and obscure session in a 70s free-ish mode, not too different from something you might hear on Strata East froom around the same time. Recorded by a strident spiritual group led by bassist Ken Hutson and drummer Rashaan – and featuring Arthur Blythe, Olu Dara, Courtney Wynter and Richard Dunbar. The first sideof the albums made up of a few nice short originals – like "Contribution" and "The Way She Moves" – but the centerpiece of the album is the side-long track on the flip, the great "Six By Six". Very nice, with a groove that's partly out, partly 70's soul jazz modal. LP, Vinyl record album

One of the greatest efforts so far from Hajime Yoshizawa – a set that has some heavy jazz influences, and almost hearkens back to his roots – yet one that's also awash in some of his best 21st Century soul styles as well! The album has a snapping acoustic energy that's right up there with other Japanese club jazz work in recent years – and features lots of tight piano work from Yoshizawa, played with a sense of imagination and energy that we haven't heard from him in years – a depth that's almost like McCoy Tyner at his best – supported by rhythms that take us back to some of Curtis Lundy's best work of years past. Navasha Daya turns in a few great vocal performances here – really sparkling away from Fertile Ground, and sounding more like a jazz singer than ever before – and other tracks feature guest work by Akiko and Shanti. Brilliant stuff all around – and with 13 tracks that include "Bristlecone Pine", "Time", "Aska", "Eastern Step", "Celebration", "Satellite Dancer", "Rain", "May", "Seeds Of Spring", and "The Color Of Peace". Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
A tight batch of rare rockers from a tiny North Carolina label from the end of the 50s – a set that's a nice contrast to some of the other volumes in this excellent series, which usually focus on lost rockabilly nuggets in the vaults of major labels! Here, there's a vibe that's much more unified overall – as most of the early tracks feature a core combo providing most of the rhythms for a lead singer and lead guitar – and even the later ones seem to hold on to a tight sort of label style, which makes for a very unified vibe through the 35 tracks in the collection! The music's not just rockabilly, either, as there's a number of cuts here that have a more direct inspiration from R&B – some of that crossover Carolina soul at its earliest levels – and there's maybe a few that echo some older styles from the hills, too. As with all volumes, the Bear Family presentation is great – very detailed notes, great sound, plenty of history, and a massive set list – with titles that include "Problem Child" and "Betcha Didn't Know" by Wayne Handy, "I Want Everything My Baby Got" and "Our Southern Way Of Living" by Jim Thornton, "Buzz Me On The Telephone" by Irving Fuller & The Chorvettes, "Cold North Wind" and "I'm Not Ashamed" by Lonnie Dee, "True Blue" by Joe Franklin & The Hi-Liters, "Stop Walking All Over Me" and "Tears Falling Down Down Down"b y Harold Pope, "Bad Boy" by Don Ray with The Hornets, "The Day I Die" by Daryl Petty, "Do You Ever Think Of Me" by Clyde Moody, "The Pad" by Bobby Strigo with The Blue Notes, "I'm Going Home" by Hughie Owens with The Blue Notes, and "Making Fun Of Me" by Bobby Rose. ✨✧ Theo Loevendie ThreeStairs ... LP
Artone (Holland), 1967. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Groundbreaking work from the Dutch scene of the 60s – an early trio album from Theo Loevendie, featuring bass work by Maarten Altena, and drums from John Engels. Loevendie plays both soprano sax and bass clarinet – in a style that's clearly inspired by Dolphy, but which also has some of the more lyrical touches of the Prince Lasha/Sonny Simmons union. Altena's bass work is extremely strong, giving the tunes a rhythmic pulse that, if anything, allows Loevendie to take off in even greater flights on his solos – while still returning to the drive of the tune. A key example of why the Dutch scene was one of the hippest in 60s European jazz – with tracks that include "Esma", "Stairs", "Midas", and "Lady Penelope". LP, Vinyl record album

The first and only volume from Tupac's Thug Life group – with Big Syke, Macadoshis, Mopreme, The Rated R guest appearances by YNV & Nate Dogg – raw street rap with an uncommonly soulful backdrop for the time! Thug Life came out in the midst of the early 90s gangsta rap media backlash, and whether or the final track list was a result of that or not, the mix of hardcore rhymes with some more tender soul samples of The O'Jays, Curtis Mayfield and more on a few tracks give a more contemplative vibe here and there – and Tupac is at near peak charismatic flow on his turns at the mic, too. Includes "Bury Me A G" with Natasha Walker of YNV, "Don't Get It Twisted", "Pour Out A Little Liquor", "Stay True", "Under Pressure", "Street Fame", "Cradle To The Grave", "Str8 Ballin'". ✨✧ VariousEccentric Soul – Smart's Palace ... CD
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Funky soul from Witchita, Kansas – an unlikely locale, but home to some really great music – courtesy of the Smart brothers, and their ultra-hip club! This wonderful entry in the Eccentric Soul series from Numero really brings that lost scene to life – telling the tale of the brothers, their club, and some of the wickedly funky artists that graced their stage – a host of obscure groups, singers, and instrumentalists who really made Kansas cook, back in the day! The groove here is plenty darn hard – as raw as some of the best funky 45s you might find from points north, warmed up with occasional southern soul elements – and always produced with rough-and-ready vibe that gets to the heart of the grit right away. The set comes with a beautiful 28 page booklet – filled with vintage photos, in support of the Smart story, told by Dante Carfagna and Rob Sevier – but even without this added feature, the CD itself would be wonderful – essential listening for fans of all things funky! Titles include "Herbie's Bag" by John Smart's Band, "Mercy Baby" by Tim Jacob, "Dedicated To You" by Hard Road, "Let Me Be Your Christmas Toy" by Chocolate Snow, "Smart" by Smart Brothers, "I Was Made To Love Her" by Theron & Darrell, "I'm Not Ashamed" by Baby Neal & The Smart Brothers, "Everybody Needs Somebody" by LT & The Soulful Dynamics, "Don't Hate Let's Communicate" by Kenneth Carr with John Smart's Band, "It's Your Love" by Theron & Darrell, and "Let It Be" by Chocolate Snow. ✨✧ Theo HillReality Check ... CD
Posi tone, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We really love the music of Theo Hill more and more with each new record – and here, the pianist is working in a quartet with Joel Ross on vibe – a player who makes a perfect partner for his music! Both Hill and Ross have this open sense of sound and timing – often using the spaces between the notes as much as the notes themselves – even when things are moving at a more full-on level, which they do often – thanks to contributions from Rashaan Carter on bass and Mark Whitfield on drums! Yet it's the sonic interplay between the vibes and keys that really blow us away – maybe especially at the few points when Theo picks up Fender Rhodes, and balances out the record with even more warmth next to his acoustic tracks. Titles include a version of the Stevie Wonder classic "Superwoman" – plus originals "Guardians Of Light", "Afrofuturism", "Scene Changes", "Mantra", "Swell", and "Song Of The Wind". CD

✨✧ John Lewis & Sacha DistelAfternoon In Paris ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
We would gladly trade every other John Lewis album for a copy of this album – because the album's a treasure all the way through – and a really unique set, with a really unique feel! The session features Lewis' piano in the company of a hip French group that includes Sasha Distel on guitar, Pierre Michelot on bass, and the great Barney Wilen on tenor – all great players who bring out a whole new side of Lewis' genius! Wilen's solos alone are worth the price of the album – deeply soulful, with a resonant tone that's some of his greatest on record – and an easy illustration of why he was one of the few European players of the postwar years to get big notice on this side of the Atlantic. But amazingly, Sacha Distel's also great here too – and despite the fact that he later went onto become a vocal pop star, Distel displays a beautiful approach to jazz guitar that makes us wish we had more sessions of his from these days. Titles include "Afternoon In Paris", "I Cover The Waterfront", and "All The Things You Are" – but don't let the titles alone speak for the record, because every track is beautiful! CD

✨✧ Moreno VelosoMaquina De Escrever Musica (Music Typewriter) ... CD
Natasha/Luaka Bop, 2001. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredible album from Moreno Veloso – the son of the famous Caetano, but an artist who's already very much his own man on this classic collaboration with the team of Kassin and Domenico! Moreno plays it cool on most of the record – singing in a spare setting that mixes acoustic guitar and percussion with some occasional electronics, sounding best on the tracks that are the most stripped-down, because if he does share one thing with his father, it's a warmly intimate voice, one that will grab you right away! The electronics are all a bit ok, but it's the voice that sells this one – and it fortunately comes to the forefront on most of the record. Tracks include "Sertao", "Deusa Do Amor", "Esfinge", "Rio Longe", "Nenhuma", "I'm Wishing", "Das Partes", and "Para Xo". CD

✨✧ VariousMotown Christmas ... CD
Motown, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Not the usual Motown Christmas set you might imagine – as the record features new material, not old Holiday soul classics – and many of the numbers are special duets recorded just for this project! The set list is impressive – way better than we were expecting – and although the cover art is a bit underwhelming, our hats are off to Motown for re-igniting the label's commitment to quality Christmas tunes! Titles include "Go Tell It On The Mountain/Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Gregory Porter & Anita Wilson, "The Christmas Song" by Ne Yo & Tasha Cobbs, "It's Christmas Time" by Smokey Robinson & Kevin Ross, "This Christmas" by Brian Courtney Wilson & Gene Moore, "Angels We Have Heard On Hihg" by Kierra Sheard & Chrisette Michele, "Mary Did You Know" by India Arie & Gene Moore, "O Holy Night" by Smokie Norful, "O Come All Ye Faithful" by Tasha Cobbs, and "Bethlehem" by Kem & Janice Gaines. Harmless (UK), 1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great little Holiday soul compilation – one that's heavy on gems from vintage years, but which also features a few surprising cuts of more recent vintage as well! The package was put together by the folks at Harmless, and it's got the same care as their excellent soul reissues – a very thoughtful lineup of 20 tracks that includes "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" by Ann Sexton, "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" by The Impressions, "Merry Christmas Baby" by Otis Redding, "My Gift To You" by Alexander O'Neal, "Christmas Time Is Here Again" by The Flirtations, "You & Me This Christmas" by Natasha Watts, "I Love Christmas" by Eugene Wilde, "Let It Snow" by Boyz II Men with Brian McKnight, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" by The Whispers, "This Christmas" by Stephanie Mills, "I Want To Come Home For Christmas" by Marvin Gaye, and "Cold Cold Winter In The Ghetto" by Lonnie Hill. ✨✧ Joe Gibbs & The ProfessionalsNo Bones For The Dogs – Dubs From The Mighty Two 1974-1979 ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
We've always loved Joe Gibb's productions, especially his dubs, with Erroll Thompson piloting the mixing desk, and have been waiting for one of the great revive labels to put together a set. At last, Pressure Sounds steps up to the plate, and delivers the goods with this mighty set of fat, thick grooves. Eighteen tracks in all: "I Stand Accused" (version of Easy Take It Easy), "I Am Not Ashamed Version", "Six Foot Six" (version of Burial), "Su Su Version", "Burning Version" (version of Burn Babylon), "Roots Kunte Kinte" (version of Hypocrites), "Give It To Jah" (Heart & Soul Version), "The Road Is Rough" (version of Time Will Tell), "No Mans Land" (version to Up Park Camp), "War" (Medley Studio One Version), "No Bones For The Dogs" (version to Why Birds Follow Spring), "War Is Over" (version to Tribal War), "Jah Jah See Them A Come Version", "Babylon Bridge (12" version)" , "Fulfilment/Prophesy Reveal" (version to 2 Sevens Clash), "Earthquake" , "Financial Business" (Commercial Business version to Love Is Not A Gamble) and "Alan, Hit By A Larry" (version to Cool Out Son). ✨✧ Elvin JonesIllumination/Dear John C ... CD
Impulse, 1963/1965. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Nice Impulse work from Elvin Jones – 2 albums in a single package! Illumination features an amazingly unique little group – one that kind of stepped in the Impulse Records back door from the Coltrane galaxy, but which features some very unique aspects overall! Dear John C is one of the stranger albums on Impulse, but a beautiful session that's filled with surprises you wouldn't expect! Elvin Jones leads a group of odd bandmates in a set of tracks that's sort of a "letter" to Coltrane, and the groupings include either Roland Hanna or Hank Jones on piano, plus Richard Davis bass, and Charlie Mariano on alto sax! Mariano is the real highlight of the album, and his sparkling alto playing on the disc is some of his finest work from the 60s – really standing out in one of his few American sessions from the middle part of the decade. Titles include "Love Bird", "Fantazm", "Ballade", "Dear John C", and "Smoke Rings". CD

✨✧ VariousHeavenly Ethiopiques – The Best Of The Ethiopiques Series ... LP
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1960s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The definitely got the title right on this one – because the set is filled with some of the most heavenly tracks from the legendary Ethiopiques series – that legendary run of compilations that was the first introduction for most of us to the amazing music of Ethiopia! This package really zeros in on all the best bits – and has a special focus on the early 70s, with some other bits from the 60s as well – all the wonderful vintage material that captures that special time in Ethiopian music when the artists were really taking some new chances with their sound – and creating an otherworldly blend of jazz and funk with more local elements as well. The range of artists is great – a really compelling blend of singers and instrumentalists, not just a handful of tracks by Mulatu – and titles include "Presentiment" by Tsegue Maryam Guebrou, "Ene Negn Bay Manesh" by Girma Beyene, "Hedetch Alu" by Muluquen Mellesse, "Lantchi Biye" by Tlahoun Gessesse, "Tchereqa" by Menelik Wesnatchew, "Ashasha Beyew" by Abbebe Tessemma, "Ati Fettun Isani Infedhani" by Ali Birra, "Mela Mela" by Seyfou Yohannes, "Teredjew Neber" by Ayalew Mesfin, and "Hametegnaw" by Seyoum Gebreyes. ✨✧ VariousNairobi Calling – Selected Recordings 1976 to 1996 ... LP
No Wahala Sounds (UK), Late 70s/1980s/1990s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A revelatory selection of tracks recorded on a Nairobi music scene that was really overflowing with creative energy – so much so that the music here doesn't just come from Kenyan talents, but from Tanzania and the Congo as well! There's a positive spirit that imbues most of the grooves – sounds that are upbeat and pulsating with rhythm – yet also put together at a level that's never too commercial at all – especially resisting the temptations that over-polished so much other music from the continent during the big world music boom of the 80s. Instead, these tunes revel in long, open interplay between guitars, bass, percussion, and voice – on selections that include "Ochieng DJ Komoro" by Victoria Chomeka, "Maria" by Orchestra Moja One Band, "Remmy Belesa" by Biashara Jazz Band, "Gilbert Wambida" by International De Nelly, "Amemiki (part 2)" by Orchestra Bana Ekanga, and "Nakuomba" by Baba Ilunga Wa Ilunga – a lost archive track, which appears here for the first time ever.
