ArturoSandoval on trumpet, Felipe LaMoglia on saxophone, Rene Toledo on guitar, Dennis Marks on bass, Alexis Arce on drums, and Tomas Cruz on percussion. CD
An amazingly smoking set from trumpeter ArturoSandoval – issued on a tiny label from Chicago, but easily one of his best records ever! The set captures Sandoval live in the Windy City, working with a tight combo that includes piano, guitar, and plenty of percussion – all stretched out on some extended tracks that give all members of the group plenty of space to groove around. Tracks are mostly upbeat and lively – save for one odd blues number – and the album's filled with hard Latin jazz groovers in a descarga mode! Titles include "Estoy Para'o", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Regando Flores", "En Nosotros", and "Regando Flores". LP, Vinyl record album
ArturoSandoval on trumpet and vocals – with Jeremy Siskind on piano, Brian Bromberg on bass, Charles Ruggiero on drums, and larger backings by the Budapest Scoring Orchestra. CD
Later live work from Dizzy Gillespie – working in London here with a very hip ensemble! We're not entirely sure of the date, but given the skinny ties on a few of the players, we're guessing it's from that 80s stretch when Dizzy was still going strong – working in a great mix of Latin and bop modes that's always kept fresh through his creative energies! Slide Hampton's on trombone – and also wrote most of the arrangements – and other players include ArturoSandoval on trumpet, Paquito D'Rivera on reeds, James Moody on sax and flute, Airto on percussion, and Danilo Perez on vocals – and Flora Purim also joins the group on vocals for a few numbers. Titles include "Kush", "Tanga", "Dizzy Shells", "Night In Tunisia", "Tin Tin Deo", "Seresta", and "Samba For Carmen". CD
One of the most globally-conscious albums ever recorded by jazz singer Kurt Elling – a set that draws on material from around the world, and which takes Elling far past his usual mix of covers and original tunes! Kurt's voice is wonderful throughout, but really takes on fresh flavors in the mix of material from Brazil, Cuba, Germany, and even Scotland – especially on the numbers that have Elling singing in other languages besides his native English. Music is from a few different partners – some smaller combos on most numbers, and with guest musicians who include ArturoSandoval on trumpet, Kendrick Scott on drums, Til Bronner on trumpet, and Richard Galliano on accordion. Titles include "The Verse", "After The Door", "Voce Ja Foi A Bahiana", "The Tangled Road", "Where The Streets Have No Name", "Bonita Cuba", and "La Vie En Rose". CD

A landmark album from this powerhouse Cuban group of the 70s – their first record issued formally to an American market, and quite possibly their greatest effort of the decade! The sound here is a lot more focused than on the group's Cuban sessions from previous years – not commercial or slick, but free from some of the jarring shifts in styles that occurred before – and more in that sweet combination of rootsy percussion and Latin funk that made them great at their best previous moments! All players are great – and the lineup is almost a who's who of Cuban jazz at the time – with Chucho Valdes on piano and keyboards, Paquito D'Rivera on alto sax, and ArturoSandoval on trumpet – plus guitar from Carlos Emilio Morales, percussion from Oscar Valdes, and tenor from Carlos Averhoff. The tracks were recorded live at the Montreux jazz festival – and titles include "Adagio", "Ilya", "Juana Mil Ciento", and the long "Misa Negra (The Black Mass)". LP, Vinyl record album
(The bottom half of the cover has some waviness and patchy stuck-on paper.)
James Moody celebrates his 70th Birthday in a really wonderful setting – a soulful, easygoing set of work recorded with a tight little combo, and some all-star guests! The performance is from a live date at the Blue Note, with Bill Cosby acting as the MC at a few points – and Moody plays tenor and alto, with a combo that features Mulgrew Miller on piano, Tod Coolman on bass, and Terri Lynne Carrington on drums – plus help from guest musicians who include Roy Ayers on vibes, ArturoSandoval on trumpet, Chris Potter on tenor, and Grover Washington Jr on soprano sax. The overall vibe is mostly boppish, a bit less complex and varied than some of Moody's other late albums – and titles include "The Eternal Triangle", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", "Benny's From Heaven", "Bebop", and "Groovin High".
