Stuart CosgroveYoung Soul Rebels – A Personal History Of Northern Soul ... Book
Polygon (UK), 2016. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
Stuart Cosgrove has turned us on to plenty of music over the years – we first began reading his NME articles many years back – and this time around, he delivers a wonderfully detailed history about his youth as a fanatic for American soul music on the UK scene! Cosgrove was lucky enough to have participated in the Northern Soul scene at its height – and does a great job of documenting the frenzied attention that scene gave to American soul music – not just big hits, but very underground work – served up at all-night dance parties, and collected by audiences who were hitting the crates long before hip hop was even born! Cosgrove does a smart job of moving the book past simple biography, and also ties the music towards larger political and cultural shifts in England too – and the whole thing is 312 pages, with some black and white images. VariousDeutsche Elektronische Musik 3 – Experimental German Rock & Electronic Music 1971 to 1981 (3LP set – with bonus download) ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... $29.99 31.99
A totally great look at the explosion of electronic sounds in German music during the 70s – a set that goes way past more familiar Krautrock territory, to bring together elements from the artier side of the spectrum too, and even run up to some of the first great moments of the German new wave! Soul Jazz have been down this path before, but this time they're maybe following the road a little farther – as the track selection is especially great, and has a way of really illuminating the special sound of this generation, even if you already know some of the music! There's a few more meditative moments than on previous volumes, mixed with some tuneful tracks, funky numbers, and even a few subtle rockers – all laid out in a way that really makes the songs sound great together as a whole. Titles include "Dronz" by Novalis, "Wide Open Space Machine" by Klaus Weiss, "Deutscher Wald" by Deutsche Wertarbeit, "I'll Be Your Singer You'll Be My Song" by AR & Machines, "The Brain Of Oskar Panizza" by Michael Bundt, "And The Waters Opened" by Between, "White Overalls" by La Dusseldorf, "Tanz Der Vogel In Den Winden" by Achim Reichel, "Hollywood" by Cluster, "Die Haut Der Frau" by Pyrolator, and "Passage" by Streetmark. ✨✧ Chris Lightcap's BigmouthEpicenter ... CD
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2015. Used ... $11.99
A totally wonderful group, and one with a really unique sound – not just from the music of bassist Chris Lightcap, but also from the tenors of Chris Cheek and Tony Malaby, and the wonderful keyboards of Craig Taborn! Taborn plays Wurlitzer electric on about half the album – used in these cool, compressed lines that spin out in very rhythmic formation – often echoed by Lightcap's work on bass, which has this way of stepping boldly, yet never too forcefully – and always in time with the actions of the reeds. Gerald Cleaver completes the group, with very well-chosen work on drums and percussion – and the whole thing's a beautiful mix of new ideas and compelling cohesion! Titles include "Nine South", "White Horse", "Epicenter", "Down East", "Arthur Avenue", and "Still Well" – all part of a longer piece titled "Lost & Found New York". CD also ends with a wonderful cover of "All Tomorrow's Parties"! CD

Velvet UndergroundVelvet Underground & Nico ... LP
Verve, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
Delicate dissonance, bruised beauty, and hazy noise pop – all in one of the best rock albums ever made – the amazing first album from the Velvet Underground and Nico! The album's the stuff of legend – and for good reason, too – a surprising slab of vinyl that barely set the world on its ear when first issued back in the mid 60s – yet a record that's gone onto have an influence felt for decades to come – arguably one of the most important rock records of all time. There's a really sinister edge to the record, even when things are sweet – and the range of subject matter and handling here is brilliant – from the dream pop slice of heaven "Sunday Morning", the melodic bitterness of "Femme Fatale", the massive White Light-esque freakout "European Son", and the sublime "Heroin" – quite possibly the inspiration for generations of drug use to come. The whole thing's a classic – with wonderful vocals from both Nico and Lou Reed – and titles include "Venus In Furs", "Run Run Run", "Black Angel's Death Song", "I'll Be Your Mirror", and "All Tomorrow's Parties". LP, Vinyl record album
