✨✧ Armando PerazaWild Thing ... LP
Skye, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The only album ever cut by conga player Armando Peraza – the killer percussionist who worked with Cal Tjader in the 60s! The album's got a very similar feel to Cal's work of the time – blending together jazz, Latin, and groovy 60s rhythms – with lots of percussion on the bottom, and instrumentation that includes electric piano, funky flute, and some nice alto sax. Most tracks have the off-center sound that you'd expect from the Skye label – and arrangements are by Cal and Gary McFarland, so you know the tunes are pretty darn great! Titles include a mix of originals like "Viva Pereza" and "Granny's Samba", plus covers like "Wild Thing" and "Funky Broadway". LP, Vinyl record album
(Nice original pressing! Cover is fully laminated – and both it and vinyl are great.)

George DukeMy Soul/Au Right ... 7-inch
MPS/Wallen Bink (Germany), 1971. New Copy (pic cover)... $14.99 24.99
Two sublime early tracks from pianist George Duke – both from his first MPS album, never issued in the US! "My Soul" has this great rolling groove, with congas from Armando Peraza giving things a nice Latin vibe – as George plays both piano and Fender Rhodes together, for a very warm sound! "Au Right" has lots more great Rhodes – a killer solo that bumps along beautifully over funky drums! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Really wonderful pressing – done from the original master tapes! Limited edition too.)

Cal TjaderCatch The Groove – Live At The Penthouse 1963 to 1967 (180 gram pressing) (2023 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Jazz Detective, Mid 60s. New Copy 3LPs ... $72.99
Very cool work from vibist Cal Tjader – sounds that are different than some of the larger arrangements and concepts of his Verve Records albums of the mid 60s, and material that appears here for the first time ever! The set features a range of appearances that Tjader made on radio in Seattle – really well-recorded dates, done at the city's famous Penthouse nightclub – and featuring Cal's vibes in a stripped-down setting that's almost more of a throwback to his pre-Verve material for Fantasy records. There's excellent players throughout, especially on piano – as the keys are handled by Clare Fischer, Al Zulaica, and Lonnie Hewitt – all of whom did great work with Cal – working here in combos that feature plenty of percussion from Armando Peraza, and drums and timbales from Johnny Rae and Carl Burnett. The tunes are a nice mix of modes – some Latin, some bossa, lots straighter jazz – and titles include "Insight", "Davito", "Pantano", "Leyte", "Half & Half", "Bag's Groove", "Mambo Inn", "Morning", "Soul Burst", "Cuban Fantasy", "Love For Sale", "Reza", "On Green Dolphin Street", "O Morro Nao Tem Vez", "Fuji", and "Along Comes Mary". ✨✧ Cal TjaderSoul Bird – Whiffenpoof (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Verve, 1965. Used ... $19.99
A real classic by Cal – one of the trademark albums of his time at Verve, and a unique blend of jazz, Latin, and other groovy influences! The tunes have that lightly jazzy approach that made Cal a hit with the radio and jukebox crowds at the time – a bossa-influenced mix of vibes, piano, and percussion – dancing easily over some very lively rhythms. Cal's group on the set features pianist Paul Griffin and percussionist Armando Peraza – both of whom bring a nice soulful finish to the album, helping it live past the "Whiffenpoof" in the title! Tracks include "The Prophet" – one of Cal's classics – plus "Soul Motion", "Reza", "Doxy", and "Daddy Wong Legs". Very groovy, very vibesy, and very very Verve. CD
(Out of print 2002 LP sleeve version.)

✨✧ Alice ColtraneEternity ... LP
Warner/Antarctica Starts Here, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Seminal 70s work from one of the most righteous jazz musicians ever! On this set, Alice Coltrane moves past the rawer spiritual sound of her Impulse albums – working with a more focused vision and an approach to jazz that takes her way past the identity of just being "Mrs Coltrane", into territory that's a more perfect expression of her spiritual vision. The approach calls for more ambitious orchestrations, yet never in a way that overwhelms the jazz basis of the music – and Alice herself is on Fender Rhodes, organ, and harp – working with players who include Fred Jackson and Hubert Laws on reeds, Oscar Brashear on trumpet, George Bohannon on trombone, Charlie Haden on bass, Ben Riley on drums, and Armando Peraza on congas. Titles include "Spiritual Eternal", "Om Supreme", "Morning Workshop", "Wisdom Eye", and "Los Caballos". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ SantanaLotus ... CD
Columbia, 1975. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great live Santana set, recorded in Japan in '73 and never released on vinyl in the US! The band here is at their peak, and this set features a nice large lineup that includes Tom Coster, Richard Kermode, Doug Rauch, Armando Peraza, Jose Chepito Areas and Michael Shreve, plus Leon Thomas on vocals! Some tracks show the clear influence of Miles' electric jazz recordings from the same period, while others have a hardcore Latin percussion base, and as you can imagine there's no shortage of full on guitar pyrotechnics and jamming on all the band members' parts. Most of the group's tracks that have entered classic status are here, but the moments that shine the brightest are the lesser known numbers and extended passages where the group really gets into the groove! Includes "A 1 Funk", "Gypsy Queen", "Oye Como Va", "Yours Is The Light", "Batuka", "Xibaba", 'Waiting", "Free Angela", "Samba De Sausalito", "Mantra", "Kyoto", "Incident At Neshabur" and "Toussaint L'Overture". CD

✨✧ George ShearingOn The Sunny Side Of The Strip ... CD
Capitol/GNP, 1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sunny and swinging – an overlooked Capitol Records treasure from George Shearing – and one with a group that really helped set the sound of groovy jazz in the 60s! The players here are all wonderful – Emil Richards on vibes, Toots Thielemans on guitar, and Al McKibbon on bass – plus some guest congas from Armando Peraza – an artist we mostly know from Cal Tjader's Latin records! With Richards' vibes, the record really has a great sound – deep-toned, with plenty of jazz and Latin inflections – very similar to the territory that Tjader was exploring in the late 50s. And let's not forget George, too – as his piano has that nicely-blocked feel that really fits the sublime rhythms of the tunes. Titles include "Mambo Inn", "Jordu", "Confirmation", "Some Other Spring", "Drume Negrita", and "Bernie's Tune". CD

Killer Latin dancefloor material! Compiled by Brit Latin DJ Gerry Lyesight, and filled with loads of storming cuts that we don't see elsewhere, wrapped up into one lovely package with the usual BBE high standards! There's 14 cuts, and titles include "Tumba El Quinto" by Hector Rivera, "Coco My Way" by Tambu, "Gaviota" by Jimmy Bosch, "Oromi" by Daniel Ponce, "Muneca" by Charlie Palmieri, "Red Onions" by Armando Peraza, "No Que Va A Llora" by Andy Harlow, and "Porque No Me Dices" by Linda Leida. Great stuff all the way through, and mostly slamming instrumentals, with a few tight jazzy vocal cuts thrown in! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ George DukeInner Source (180 gram pressing) ... LP
MPS (Germany), 1971. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A fantastic set that features the best recordings ever done by George Duke for MPS! The set's a 2LP package that compiles the sessions Solus and The Inner Source – both of which feature Duke in his purest form, at the height of his spacey keyboard powers, in settings that are neither too funky, too goofy, or too over the top. There's a lively mixture of jazzy playing, Latin riffing, and pure MPS modal grooving – and the record contains the material by Duke that always shows up on MPS comps, but which you can never actually find. Duke doesn't sing, and instead concentrates on leading the group and hitting some wonderful solos on the keys. Players include Armando Peraza on percussion, Luis Gasca on trumpet, and Jerome Richardson on reeds – and the vibe is warm, wonderful, and extremely soulful. If you've ever wondered why people consider George so great, this is the stuff to check out – as it's amazingly put together, with a sound that blows away most of his other albums. Titles include "Au-Right", "My Soul", "Manya", "Sweet Bite", "Always Constant", "Solus", "Nigerian Numberuma", "Feels So Good", and "Some Time Ago". Great stuff, and extremely difficult to find! ✨✧ Cal TjaderCal Tjader Plugs In ... LP
Skye, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A beautifully plugged-in, turned-on session from Cal Tjader – one that features the funky vibist alongside some sweet Fender Rhodes! The session was recorded live, but it's got a flowing, modal quality that rivals Tjader's best work in the studio for Verve and Fantasy at the end of the 60s – a soaring, spacious sound that comes from the interplay between Cal's ringing vibes and the Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano work of Al Zulaica – an excellent player we only know from a few of Tjader's albums. Armando Peraza provides some tight conga work on the set – and titles include "Spooky", "Tra La La Song", "Morning Mist", "Alonzo", "Nica's Dream", and "Get Out of My Way" – a great instrumental take on the Latin soul hit from Joe Torres! Capitol, 1958. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great set from George Shearing – recorded live, with a lot more of a tight jazz style than some of his higher-concept sets for Capitol in the late 50s! The group here is wonderful – with vibes from Emil Richards, guitar and harmonica from Toots Thielemans, percussion from Armando Peraza, and bass from Al McKibbon – all players who manage to make things groove with a bit of an edge, while still respecting that classic Shearing sound! Titles include "Caravan", "Little Niles", "On The Street Where You Live", "Nothing But The Best", and "Little White Lies". LP, Vinyl record album
