Arista All StarsBlue Montreux Vol 2 ... LP
Arista, 1978. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A sweet session of 70s electric jazz – recorded as a unique live all-star outing by a group of Arista's best jazz players at the time! The group's an octet, but plays together in differing formations throughout the record – with Warren Bernhardt on keyboards, Michael Brecker on saxes, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Steve Jordan on drums, Steve Khan and Larry Coryell on guitars, Tony Levin on bass, and Mike Maineri on vibes – the last of which really make for some of the best numbers on the album! Bernhardt's keyboards are pretty good too – stepping out with a spacious, fluid feel that's never jamming – and more in the open-ended Bob James side of the spectrum, although his overall sound is a lot different than Bob's! Titles on this second volume include "Candles", "Cloud Motion", "Uptowned", "Love Play", and "A Funky Waltz". LP, Vinyl record album

Human Arts EnsembleUnder The Sun (Arista Freedom) ... LP
Arista Freedom, 1973. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A great early album by this oft-overlooked spiritual avant group that included Lester Bowie, Oliver Lake, JD Parran, and Charles Bobo Shaw. Side one features the extended "Lover's Desire", a nice slightly-funky number that has a groove that's sort of modal. Side two of the album features "Hazrat The Sufi", a long creative avant piece, with insane ensemble playing that's very much in the AACM mode. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some wear and a hype sticker.)

✨✧ MonkeesGreatest Hits (Arista) ... CD
Arista, Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The Monkees had so many fantastic records during their short span of recording, nearly all of them might well be "greatest hits" – but this set does a nice job of slimming the selection down to focus on some of the most long-lasting tracks from the group! There's a few killer Boyce & Hart compositions, produced by the duo too – and the set also features contributions from other 60s pop heavyweights, like Chip Douglas, Neil Diamond, Jeff Barry, and the duo of Carole King & Gerry Goffin – all of whim give the foursome some great material, on tunes that include "Theme From The Monkees", "Last Train To Clarksville", "She", "Listen To The Band", "A Little Bit Me A Little Bit You", "Daydream Believer", "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "Steppin Stone", "I'm A Believer", and "I Wanna Be Free". Gato Barbieri & Dollar BrandConfluence ... LP
Arista Freedom, 1968. Sealed ... $9.99
A real sleeper – and one of the treasures of the Arista Freedom series! The album's a rare meeting between Argentine tenor player Gato Barbieri and South African pianist Dollar Brand – a true global meeting of the jazz minds, and a recording that's stronger than most of the work either player was recording at the time! The format is incredibly spare – just tenor and piano, plus some occasional cello work by Brand – dark and angular, but also filled with small flowers of hope, flowering in the spontaneous presence of these two great minds. Tracks are long, with a free flowing quality that's infused with soul and spirit – and titles include "Hamba Khale", "Aloe & The Wildrose", and "To Elsa". LP, Vinyl record album

Arista Freedom, 1965/1966. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A late 70s issue of two mid 60s live recordings of Bley's trio recorded in concert in Europe, with either Kent Carter or Mark Levenson on bass, and Barry Altschul on drums. Bley's playing in a mode that reflects ther influence of a number of the more progressive players of the same era, with a free flowing multi-linear improvisational approach, that still maintains a strong emphasis on melody and never gets too frenetic. Witha number of great Annette Peacock compositions, including "Cartoon", "Touching", "Start", "Closer", "Pablo" and lengthy takes on "Blood" and "Mister Joy". Features a rare photo of Bley without a pipe in his mouth inside the gatefold too! LP, Vinyl record album

Angela BofillTeaser ... LP
Arista, 1983. Very Good+ ... $2.99
An album that further cements Angela Bofill's relationship with Narada Michael Walden – as Walden produced almost every track in the set, and does a fair bit of songwriting too! The style is electric 80s soul, with a fair bit of keyboards and beats in the mix – but as usual with Bofill, there's an undeniable sense of warmth to the music that's totally great. Titles include "Still A Thrill", "You're A Special Part Of Me", "Gotta Make It Up To You", "Crazy For Him", "I'm On Your Side", "Call Of The Wild", and "Special Delivery". LP, Vinyl record album

Brecker BrothersDetente ... LP
Arista, 1980. Very Good+ ... $3.99
An overlooked Brecker Brothers gem from the end of the 70s – easily one of their most soulful sets from the Arista years, and a record that's got way more lasting power than the Cold War reference of its title! The Brecker's are still rooted in jazz here, but definitely step out with plenty of soul in the mix too – vocals from DJ Rogers, Carl Carlwell, Luther Vandross, and others – all of whom really add a lot to the set. The presence of these vocals provides a nice variety – especially given that only about half the tracks have some singing – and in a way, this addition holds back some of the too-jamming tendencies that the Brothers could have – keeping them strongly in the groove throughout! Other players include George Duke on keyboards, Hiram Bullock on guitar, Steve Jordan on drums, and Airto on percussion – on titles that include "You Ga Ta Give It", "Not Tonight", "Tee'd Off", "Squish", "Baffled", "Dream Theme", and "I Don't Know Either". Brecker BrothersStraphangin ... LP
Arista, 1981. Near Mint- ... $4.99
It's our bet that the Brecker Brothers probably weren't straphanging on their way to work in this point in their careers – given the classy, professional sound of this set – which was more likely to earn them a ride in a limo than a place in the subway! But we certainly don't hold that professionalism against them – because the BBs manage to groove here with a sharpness and depth that most of their smoother fusion contemporaries just weren't hitting – an edge that reminds us of the deeper roots these guys had before they started hitting the mainstream. And, given the date of the session, things are still pretty great overall – much more in a mid 70s fusion mode, with keyboards and drum bits that come out plenty hard next to the horns. Titles include "Threesome", "Straphangin", "Bathsheba", "Jacknife", and "Not Ethiopia". LP, Vinyl record album

Marion plays hard with these two European masters of free playing, and the 5 tracks from the session stand as a great demonstration of his early power. The original album's darn hard to find, so thank your stars that Arista Freedom put this issue out in the US! Tracks include "Sound Structure", "QBIC", "Porto Novo", and "Similar Limits". Arista/GRP, 1981. Very Good+ ... $4.99
A key bit of jazz funk from trumpeter Tom Browne – still grooving strong here, with a sublime mix of modern soul, funky jazz, and some of the 80s groove touches that showed up on the best GRP titles from the time! The album's got a smooth compressed groove – kind of post-Donald Byrd, with Tom taking solos over the top of most tracks, and occasional vocals , wither from a backing group, or an assortment of different lead singers. Players on the set include Bernard Wright, Dave Grusin, Bobby Broom, and Marcus Miller – and tracks include "I Know", "Midnight Interlude", "Let's Dance", "Night Wind", "Making Plans", "Thighs Hihg", and "Magic". Dave BurrellHigh Won – High Two ... LP
Arista Freedom, 1968. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $13.99
A pretty great and very strange album by avant pianist Dave Burrell! Side one features an extended tune called "West Side Story", which is basically a medley of tunes from the musical, played with a nice dark edge by Burrell and a trio, plus additional tambourine work by Pharoah Sanders! Side three features "East Side Colors", a great track in the ESP avant mode – and one that features killer drum work by Sonny Murray, and some fierce piano by Burrell. The set closes with the jaunty "Margy Pargy", a short straight tune with almost an old-timey feel to it. Weird, but one of Burrell's more compelling albums. Other tracks include "Theme Stream", "Bittersweet Reminiscence", and "Dave Blue". LP, Vinyl record album

Arista, 1976. Near Mint- ... $2.99
Catchy 70s pop from Gino Cunico – just the right sort of songs that would have sounded wonderful coming out of an AM radio in your car – with that kind of production that somehow managed to make that tiny speaker on the dashboard sound so much stronger than it was! Gino puts himself right out there with the tunes – not afraid to be a crossover crooner, with maybe a bit of a Bee Gees influence in his approach – amidst the well-crafted strings and orchestrations in the background. Most numbers are pretty hook-heavy – and titles include the hit "Can't Smile Without You", plus "Daydreamer", "Can't Hold On Any Longer", "Emptiness", "Don't Throw It All Away", and "When I Wanted You". Fantastic work from the team of Ted Curson and Bill Barron – a rare French session from 1964, one that captures all the brilliance of their American work from the early 60s! The set features the pair playing in an extremely fragmented mode – no doubt inspired by the recent loss of Eric Dolphy, alluded to in the title of the album, but also possibly because the freedom of the session gave them room to explore a bit more than on previous albums. Includes a great version of Curson's "Quicksand", plus the tracks "Kassim", "East 6th Street", "Tears For Dolphy", "7/4 Funny Time", and "Desolation". LP, Vinyl record album

A really heavily-jamming album from Larry Coryell's Eleventh House group – certainly to be expected, given that the lineup includes John Lee on bass, Mike Mandel on keyboards, and Alphonse Mouzon on drums! The sound has plenty of rock-fusion touches – and Coryell's guitar is searing, with those great fuzzy touches he virtually invented in his early years – just right here for the kind of over-the-top fusion that the group's putting down! ExposeWhat You Don't Know (3CD set – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Arista/Cherry Pop (UK), 1989. Used 3 CDs ... $6.99
The female pop soul trio was alive and well in the 80s – morphed strongly from its 60s girl group roots and 70s disco chorus mode – to the point where a group like Expose was perfectly poised to take over the top of the charts! That catchy, poppy style is very firmly in place here – mixing the balance of voices with beats in a very nice way – never out to challenge the soul music establishment, but certainly out to win a few new ears, thanks to the upbeat Miami beats in the music. Titles include "Stop Listen Look & Think", "Let Me Down Easy", "What You Don't Know", "When I Looked At Him", "Tell Me Why", "Still Hung Up On You", "Your Baby Never Looked Good In Blue", "Didn't It Hurt To Hurt Me", "Walk Along With Me", "Love Don't Hurt Until You Fall", and "Now That I Found You". 3CD set is filled with a HUGE amount of bonus material – 34 alternate versions, mixes, remixes, and more – some from the many 12" single releases from the album, but a number of previously unissued tracks too! Aretha FranklinGet It Right ... CD
Arista, 1983. Used ... $4.99
A real standout from Aretha Franklin's years on Arista – a set produced by Luther Vandross, with a soaring groove that really opens Aretha up nicely! Luther's more in the mode here of his 70s club productions than his 80s hits – that warm, midtempo vibe that's full of lush moments, but never in ways that are cloyingly commercial. Franklin's vocals light up the tunes in the way that Luther's own might do – really soaring out beautifully in this setting. Aretha FranklinJump To It ... LP
Arista, 1982. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Aretha's grooving sweetly on a record that's produced by Luther Vandross – and a damn strong one, too! Aretha wasn't the first, or the last classic soul singer to embrace the modern sounds of the early 80s, but relatively few outshined their younger peers as brilliantly as Aretha does here. She's great on this one! There's plenty of space in the arrangements for Aretha to do her thing – emoting naturally, improvising some of the vocals, and really just knocking it out of the park. Luther's production shows ample love and respect for the previous generation of soul, while still sounding right at home in '82 – with some timeless ballads along with contemporary chart-ready groovers. Titles include "Jump To It", "Love Me Right", "If She Don't Want Your Lovin'", "This Is For Real", "It's Just Your Love", "I Want To Make It Up To You" and "It's Just Your Thing". Not just disco nights, but some great mellow moments too – a wonderfully well-rounded classic from this great quartet – as tight and groovy as it is cool and classy! By the time of this debut, the group had already had plenty of 70s soul experience as The Rhythm Makers – a previous name for the lineup, and a combo with a great reputation for dancefloor grooves that were tight, but never too uptight – kind of the best funky soul styles of the time! This album definitely continues that tradition, with a sound that's leaner than most mainstream disco of the time – and really well put-together, in a way that also has them slowing down to hit some great ballads and mellower steppers too. The album features the massive disco title cut – "Disco Nights" – and a beautiful reworking of Billy Stewart's classic "I Do Love You" – with a sound that's faithful to the original, but a sweet stepping groove that's made it a favorite for years! Hmmm....we're not sure if this is the same Harlem River Drive that recorded with Eddie Palmieri, but we've got to assume that they are, as we can't imagine 2 bands using the same name at the same time, and both apparently from New York. "Need You" has also got a sound that's kind of a progression from the famous album by the group, with a shift from Latin funk to Latin disco – in the kind of groove that Eddie Drennon was moving to at the same time. The track's a vocal groover, with a nice catchy soul hook. "Overtime" is a bit more straight funk – but with a heavy bottom sound that's also in the Harlem River Drive style. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Heaven 17How Men Are ... LP
Arista/Virgin, 1984. Near Mint- ... $4.99
The last moment of greatness from Heaven 17 – and a set that continues the trend towards more soulful expression the group began with their previous record! This time around, the production is warmly touched with many soul-based elements that nicely offset the colder electro pop of their roots – aspects of which include the Phenix Horns, borrowed from Earth Wind & Fire, as well as the Afrodiziak backing vocal group, which features a young Caron Wheeler in her days before Soul II Soul! It may be a stretch, but the record does have a key place in the evolution of UK soul in the 1980s – certainly its most poppy aspect to be sure, but one that has an undeniable charm, and which really managed to bridge a number of different cultures with its approach. Titles include "Sunset Now", "The Fuse", "The Skin I'm In", "Flamedown", "Reputation", "And That's No Lie", "Shame Is On The Rocks", and "Five Minutes To Midnight". LP, Vinyl record album

Michael HendersonFickle ... LP
Buddah/Arista, 1983. Very Good ... $2.99
A mix of 80s groove and mellower material from Michael Henderson – a sweet extension of the jazzy soul he first laid out in the 70s! The style here is a bit more electric and contemporary than before – less of the deeper, warmer tones – and a bit more synth drums and keyboards. But Henderson's mature, sophisticated approach to soul still holds it all together nicely – hitting its best vibe on the mellower cuts, which still let Michael's wonderful voice find some of its best notes. Titles include the great spacey stepper "Assault With A Friendly Weapon", plus "Love Will Find A Way", "Fickle", "Thin Walls", "You Wouldn't Have To Work At All", "Feeling Like Myself Once Again", and "Whip It", which was previously released, but makes a reappearance here. Arista, 1979. Very Good+ ... $4.99
The classic first album from Hiroshima – a group who took the 70s experiments in Japanese fusion right into the American mainstream – with a wonderful blend of jazz and soul, and a production style that was never too polished or commercial! The group's led by reedman Dan Kuramota – who plays both sax and flutes, including a bit of Japanese wooden flute – which gives the record a few slight "Eastern" touches a times, although the overall vibe is strongly in the best soulful fusion of the period! In keeping with that approach, there's a bit of vocals on the record – sung in English with a soulful vibe – on titles that include "Lion Dance", "Da Da", "Taiko Song", "Holidays", "Never Ever", and "Kokoro". One of the few secular soul albums ever cut by Genobia Jeter – a gospel singer who broke into R&B with this smooth mid 80s effort – a mix of tracks handled by different producers, taking Genobia from mellow quiet storm numbers into more club-oriented groovers. Hubert Eaves handles some of the most uptempo work on the set, and Genobia also gets backing from Robert Wright and Lesette Wilson, both of whom use a similar keyboard-driven groove to Eaves' sound. Titles include "Together", "Sunshine", "Peace Of Mind", "Take A Look", "All Of My Love", and "We Got Love". KashifCondition Of The Heart ... LP
Arista, 1985. Near Mint- ... $4.99
An 80s soul classic from Kashif – an artist who really helped transform R&B at the time, all without the benefit of a last name! The album's completely arranged and produced by Kashif himself – cementing the reputation he'd begun working behind other artists in the earlier part of the decade before going onto greater fame as a solo act on his own – a rock-solid approach to soul music that bristles with the best innovations of the 80s soul generation. Most tunes are heavy on beats, but use them in just the right ways – and keyboards provide a good amount of the rest of the instrumentation, but fleshed out strongly so that they work well next to the vocals. Tunes are a nicely balanced blend of mature male soul and some slightly catchier groovers – and titles include "Botha Botha", "Dancing In The Dark", "Movie Song", "Say You Love Me", "Stay The Night", and "Condition Of The Heart". Eddie KendricksVintage 78 ... CD
Arista/Intermusic (Spain), 1978. New Copy ... $13.99
Eddie Kendricks, vintage 1978 – and still very much in the great grooving mode he brought to his earlier solo material for Motown! Even in this giant dancefloor generation, Eddie's got something very special and unique – a voice that can still sound as heartbreaking on a groover as it can on a ballad – and which has a way of linking an earlier generation of fragile male soul vocals with a new sense of 70s masculinity – of which Kendricks was one of the leading lights in soul! There's moments here that might well match some of the best late 70s work by artists like Marvin Gaye or Leroy Hutson – and the strong arrangements are by Andrew Louis Smith – a name we don't really know at all, but who should be thanked for helping the record avoid any disco cliches. Titles include "How's Your Love Life Baby", "One Of The Poorest People", "Love Love Love", "The Best Of Strangers Now", "Don't Underestimate The Power Of Love", "Ain't No Smoke Without A Fire" and "Maybe I'm A Fool To Love You". Arista, 1981. Very Good+ ... $3.99
A real standout from Ray Davies and crew – heavy-hitting here with guitars that seem a bit more amped up than usual, and a slight post-punkish groove that's almost a reinvention of the group's sound for an 80s new wave market! The album's a surprisingly hard rocker in parts, and has a darkness that's a nice change from some of the late 70s Kinks material – but also shows Ray still able to come up with some more tender numbers in just the right spots. Tracks include "Add It Up", "Destroyer", "Yo Yo", "Art Lover", "Better Things", "Killer's Eyes", "Around The Dial", and "Give The People What They Want". LP, Vinyl record album

Linda LewisNot A Little Girl Anymore (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Arista/BMG (Japan), 1975. Used ... $19.99
A strong 70s set from Linda Lewis – her first for Arista, and a date that has her picking up a fuller style than before! The arrangements here are by Bert DeCoteaux, who brings in plenty of soul – and Linda's working in modes that run from the simple, personal style of her Warner years to some of the more lush sounds you might expect at Arista – hints of club at points, but an even better dose of keyboards and strings that make the midtempo tracks especially great. The set was recorded in both London and New York, and titles include "Love Where Are You Now", "Love Love Love", "This Time I'll Be Sweeter", "The Old Schoolyard", "Rock & Roller Coaster", "May You Never", and "Not A Little Girl Anymore". One of the better recordings created for the Arista/Freedom series, rather than licensed from tapes Alan Bates had already produced for Black Lion – and a nice set of loft jazz played by Lowe with help from Lester and Joseph Bowie, Abdul Wadud, Steve Reid, and Charles Bobo Shaw. The group play 2 Monk tracks, "Epistrophy" and "Mysterioso", plus 2 Lowe originals, "Play Some Blues" and "Fresh", with a sound befitting the title track, approaching the new thing with a respect for the swing and blues roots of jazz. The final track "Chu's Blues", is a little different from the rest of the LP, a great grooving number that was performed by Lowe in Memphis, with help from the Memphis Four. LP, Vinyl record album

Mike Mainieri & Warren BernhardtFree Smiles – Live At Montreux ... LP
Arista, 1978. Very Good+ ... $3.99
Maybe one of the best 70s albums from these two great musicians – a spare set of duos performances recorded live at Montreux – away from any of the studio trappings that both players often found themselves involved with! There's almost an ECM vibe to the record – as the vibes of Mike Mainieri work alongside the Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and moog of Warren Bernhardt – on these open, spacious tracks that really love the tones of both instruments – coming together here in this sort of sonic space that almost reminds us more of some of the Gary Burton and Chick Corea collaborations, but with more of the deft tones that we'd expect from Bernhardt and Mainieri. The whole thing's great – and titles include "Praise", "Song To Beth", "Mediterranean Waters", "Free Smiles", and "I'll Sing You Softly". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the best solo records from Harvey Mason – best known as the drummer on some really monster 70s funky fusion sessions (such as Johnny Hammond's Gears album) – but a surprisingly well-rounded R&B artist overall! As with Norman Connors, another fusion drummer gone soul star, Harvey's working here in a style that mixes jazz influences with modern soul – grooving things for a more mainstream audience, but still keeping things real underneath. The record's filled with guest appearances by fusion greats – like Bob James, David Spinozza, Richard Tee, Lee Ritenour, and others – and Jim Gilstrap sings vocals on a cut or two. Arista/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1981. Used ... $4.99
Harvey's fifth and final album for Arista – another win for the funk-soul-fusion MVP! Given that Harvey worked on some of the best fusion sessions of the 70s, it's more than safe to give him "most valuable player" award – because without his drums, many a record would have faltered! Here, though, Mason's much more in his all-out soul mode – singing, playing, and producing in a smooth blend of jazz and modern soul, still with some funky grit in the mix. It not only benefits greatly from his years as one of the great studio players, but even more so for his triple threat talent as a writer, producer and performer. Tracks are all quite tight and catchy – soul groovers with some funk. Feature arrangements from Kenny Mason, Patrice Rushen and Jerry Peters. Titles include "Universal Rhyme", "Don't Doubt My Lovin", "On and On", "You And Me", "Spell", and "How Does It Feel". Not much rock here, but a definite guitar-driven groove – that Ray Parker vamp cooked up in a long legacy of work for other artists – really sparkling here in the frontline of Raydio! The bass is pretty strong too, with that mainstream funk sound that was popping strongly from the west coast at the end of the 70s – a nice match for the guitar, and never as overdone as some of the other work of this nature. Tunes are all pretty darn catchy – more than enough to crossover, but without losing their cool – and titles include the megahit "You Can't Change That", plus "Rock On", "More Than One Way To Love A Woman", "What You Waitin For", "Honey I'm A Star", and "When You're In Need Of Love". Lou ReedGrowing Up In Public ... CD
Arista, 1980. Used ... $6.99
A pretty underrated album from Lou Reed started him out in the 80s – the solid and accessible Growing Up In Public – cut with his touring band and set of straight-forward, disarmingly honest songs and fairly rockin' arrangements! Lou's taking on personal and family issues on this set, and the conversational, pretense free approach serves it really well in our eyes. Tracks include "How Do You Speak With An Angel", "So Alone", "My Old Man", "Smiles". "Teach The Gifted Children" and more. CD

Martha ReevesRest Of My Life ... LP
Arista, 1976. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Great solo work from Motown legend Martha Reeves – a singer who managed to keep on going strongly after parting ways with the Vandellas! The set's got Martha's wonderful voice set up in a very different way – on a mix of mellow, sophisticated ballads that are somewhere between Marlena Shaw and Gladys Knight – plus some more upbeat, soaring tunes that carry a lot of east coast club touches – a nice trace of Philly groove to help Reeves reach some of the dancefloor heights of before! Production (and we assume arrangements) are by Tony Silvester, Bert De Coteaux, General Johnson, and Tony Camillo – and tracks include "Thank You", "Love Blind", "You've Lost That Lovin Feelin", "The Rest Of My Life", "This Time I'll Be Sweeter", "Second Chance", and "Now That We Found Love". LP, Vinyl record album
