Alberto Baldan BemboL'Amica Di Mia Madre (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Aris/Sonor (Italy), 1975. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $34.99
One of the greatest moments ever from Italian soundtrack composer Alberto Baldan Bembo – an artist with a great talent for combining warmth and a groove – using subtle strings over rolling basslines and sweet keyboards – all to wrap things together in a really fantastic sound! There's a mix of acoustic and electric elements on most tracks – strong trombone solos in many parts, which up a jazzy element, almost with a Raul De Souza sort of sound – and the keyboards are offset by nice moments on vibes and percussion as well. Titles include "Tema Di Andrea", "Abat Jour", "Pedro Come", "Linda", "Club Moreno", "Blue Velvet", "Cavallo Blu", and "Gonzalez Go". LP, Vinyl record album
(Comes with a bonus replica poster too!)

Claudio TallinoCalamo (with bonus CD) ... LP
Aris/Sonor (Italy), 1976. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99
A pretty fantastic soundtrack to a movie that looks pretty darn spooky – not in the usual Italian horror way, but more in an earthy, ritualistic sort of mode! As part of that vibe, the music's got this great current of sex – some funky elements mixed with grittier sounds – often electric bass balanced with raw percussion, or a sweet electric bit moving alongside an acoustic one – an approach that sounds especially nice when pounding piano lines play out with a great sense of strength! There's also some especially nice flute – used almost as this surprising current of innocence, which gets cool counterpoint from some fuzzier guitar. Titles include "The Priest", "Lone Stepbrother", "The Rite", "Sweet Mouth Stepsister", "Smoke Gets In Your Head", and "The End". LP features an unreleased track – "M20 Canone". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes bonus CD – which seems to have some bonus tracks too!)

Arista All StarsBlue Montreux ... LP
Arista, 1978. Near Mint- ... $5.99
A sweet session of 70s electric jazz – recorded as a unique live all-star outing by a group of Arista's best jazz players at the time! The group's an octet, but plays together in differing formations throughout the record – with Warren Bernhardt on keyboards, Michael Brecker on saxes, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Steve Jordan on drums, Steve Khan and Larry Coryell on guitars, Tony Levin on bass, and Mike Maineri on vibes – the last of which really make for some of the best numbers on the album! Bernhardt's keyboards are pretty good too – stepping out with a spacious, fluid feel that's never jamming – and more in the open-ended Bob James side of the spectrum, although his overall sound is a lot different than Bob's! Art Ensemble Of ChicagoLive In Paris ... CD
BYG/Fuel 2000, 1969. Used 2 CDs ... $19.99
Seminal work from the Art Ensemble of Chicago – recorded during their most creative period ever! The album was recorded live in October of 1969 – at a time when the group had pulled up roots and moved to France for a few years, bursting on the European scene with unique creativity that was not getting the recognition it deserved in their hometown of Chicago. The studio sets from this time are already the stuff of legend, and have thankfully made it back on reissue heavily the past few years – and this brilliant live set stands perfectly next to them – matching any of the LPs in the Great Black Music series on BYG/Actuel for sheer creative brilliance and soulful energy! Fontella Bass joins the group for a bit of vocals, and the 2CD set features 2 long tracks – "Bon Voyage" and "Oh Strange". CD

Eddie Barclay with Quincy JonesAmericans In Paris ... LP
United Artists, 1959. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A mainstream album of postwar jazz in Europe – but a great one, thanks to some tight arrangements by a young Quincy Jones, and a lineup of players that includes Don Byas, Lucky Thompson, and Kenny Clarke joining the larger group of Eddie Barclay! Barclay's sound was sometimes more pop instrumental than jazz, but Q has definitely straightened things out for this session – and the record dips, turns, and swings with the best soulful grace as Quincy's own American sides from the same time. Titles include "Sermonette", "Et Viola", "Avec Ces Yeux-La", "Tu Joues Avec Le Feu", and "Craven". LP, Vinyl record album

One of Basie's biggest albums – but still a work of pure genius! "April In Paris" is one of the darkest jazz standards ever written, and it never sounded better than in this original version, which features that great ending in which Basie and the band stop, then start, then stop – leaving you completely unresolved at the finish. The group's a strong one – with Frank Foster, Frank Wess, Freddie Green, Sonny Payne, Marshall Royal, Henry Coker, Joe Newman, and Thad Jones – and tracks include "Shiny Stockings", "Midgets", "Mambo Inn", "Sweety Cakes", and "Corner Pocket". An excellent live set by the Jazz Messengers – recorded in Paris in 1958, but with a hard heavy groove that's right up there with their best Blue Note work. The group at this time – Blakey, Bobby Timmons, Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, and Jymie Merritt – plays hard, heavy, and straight ahead, with no other interference from outside players – and the track list is a batch of classic Jazz Messenger standards, stretched out a bit longer than usual, with plenty of solo space! Fontana (France), 1960. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic live set from Art Blakey – recorded in Paris in 1960, with a version of the Jazz Messengers that includes Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, Walter Davis Jr on piano, and Jymie Merritt on bass! Best of all, though, is that the group is joined by two Paris jazz giants on two tracks – the great saxophonist Barney Wilen on tenor, and American ex-patriot Bud Powell – who was doing some of his best work in Paris at the time, and sits in on the keys instead of Davis. Wilen's incredible tone sounds great next to Shorter's horn – and all the tracks are long enough to give all soloists plenty of room to move around. Titles include "The Midget", "Bouncing With Bud", and "Dance of The Infidels". CD

Excellent lost live work by Art Blakey – playing here with one of the best-ever versions of the Jazz Messengers! The frontline is held down by Wayne Shorter, Bobby Timmons, and Lee Morgan – the firey trio who put Blakey's group on the map as one of the best-ever hardbop ensembles of the 50s and 60s! The quintet is playing here before a very live audience, at the Olympia in Paris, during a time when the Jazz Messengers were having a very fruitful relationship with the city. This first volume features some excellent long tracks – including 12 minute versions of Timmons' "So Tired", Morgan's "Yama", and Shorter's "The Summit" – plus a version of "Close Your Eyes", which the group always did well! Amazing Paris work from Clifford Brown – recording here in extra-special company with alto saxophonist Gigi Gryce! The tunes have all that sharp edge and smart tone we love in Gryce's 50s work – and all numbers are originals by Gigi – blown beautifully by Brown in that famous style of his, and matched with wonderful alto lines by Gryce. There's a completely impeccable quality to the whole thing – nascent modern jazz at its best – and other players include Henri Renaud on piano, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Jean-Louis Viale on drums – and Jimmy Gourley plays guitar on a handful of numbers. Features 3 takes on "Minority", 2 takes of "Salute To The Band Box" and "Baby", and the cut "Strictly Romantic". LP, Vinyl record album

Quite a surprising pairing of talents – and a set that shows that at in the right settings, Stephane Grappelli's still got plenty of modern moments! The core group is really that of vibist Gary Burton – with Steve Swallow on electric bass and Bill Goodwin on drums – both players with an open, spacious feel that's quite different than the usual rhythm group for a Grappelli record – which really opens up the legendary violinist, and has him stretching out wonderfully – especially on some of the more contemporary numbers. Burton's vibes are great at this point – sharp toned, yet incredibly warm too – and titles include "Daphne", "Blue In Green", "Sweet Rain", "Coquette", and "Arpege". CD

DaktarisSoul Explosion ... LP
Desco/Daptone, 1998. New Copy (reissue)... $15.99 18.99
One of the greatest grooves from the legendary Desco Records years – a brilliant album of modern Afro Funk done by The Daktaris – in a groove that's just as hard-hitting as any of Fela's work from the 70s! The album was one of the first to bring back an older African style to current funk – and even years later, it's still one of the best examples of the sound – a razor-sharp session that helped set the stage for better-known Antibalas work to come! Percussion and guitar is super-heavy throughout – produced with that bare-bones Desco style, and handled in a way that makes you think the record might be some treasure from mid 70s Nigeria – a trick the label tried to pull when it was released! Cuts include a cover of Fela's "Upside Down", James Brown's "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose", and the originals "Super Afro-Beat", "Daktari Walk", "Voodoo Soul Stew", and "Quiet Man Is A Dead Man". Eric DolphyEric Dolphy Septet With Donald Byrd – Paris 1964 ... CD
Hi Hat, 1964. New Copy ... $16.99
Some of Eric Dolphy's last material ever – recorded in Paris with some very surprising guest stars! The work is really tremendous – every bit as great as Dolphy's monumental studio albums for Prestige, and written and performed with a similar blend of the free, the lyrical, the avant, and the soulful – a groove that's often a bit more inside than some of Eric's other late recordings – and played with plenty of spirit throughout! The sessions make great use of American soloists Donald Byrd on trumpet and Nathan Davis on tenor – both players whose sound really balances Dolphy in a great way – holding down a groove while Eric takes off on alto sax or bass clarinet. The rhythm is by a French combo – with Jack Dieval on piano, Jacques Hess on bass, and Franco Monzecci on drums – plus a bit of congas on two tracks from Jacky Bambou. Titles are quite long, and really wonderful – and tunes include "245", "GW", "Serene", and "Springtime". CD

One of the great records made by the cool French jazzy vocal group that included Ward Swingle and Christine LeGrand, and which did stuff that was much more straightforwardly jazzy than the semi-classical work of the Swingle Singers. This LP's got them backed by Jerome Richardson and his quartet, and has them running through a set of tracks associated with Ray Charles' Atlantic work. Cuts include "Stompin' Room Only, "Hit The Road, Jack", "Yes, Indeed", and "One Mint Julep", and all have a swingin' jazz vocalese sound. Cool stuff by one of the great lost groups of the 60's. The group included a core of the early Swingle Singers, and featured members Ward Swingle and Christine Legrand, two of France's best jazz vocalists at the time. Did Ellington ever record in concert and it not be great? This wonderful double-length set from the 60s is key proof of his genius in an unfettered live setting – recorded in Paris in 1963 with plenty of dark edges! The tracks are short overall, but Duke's really at the head of the group on piano – playing with those angular, modern tones he picked up in the post Money Jungle years – and clearly in charge of the group from the keyboard, not the podium. Horn players include Harry Carney, Ray Nance, Lwarence Brown, Cootie Williams, Johnny Hodges, and Paul Gonsalves – all bringing in some special tones and unique performances to an extended set list that includes both Ellington standards and a few lesser-known numbers. Columbia, 1958. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A totally unique, totally mindblowing album from Erroll Garner – and the set that made us finally fall in love with his music forever! Sure, Garner can be great on other albums – but here, he's really hitting this amazing vibe – stretching out in this rhythmic way that pushes his style and agenda even more than before – so much so that the flurry of sharp, angular notes really leaves us breathless – and almost bridges on much more modern avant playing at certain moments! Plus, Erroll also plays some harpsichord – which sounds wonderfully weird and totally offbeat in the hands of his technique – in a way that only sharpens and intensifies all the elements that were always in his music. The whole thing is incredibly striking – and although Ed Calhoun plays bass and Kelly Martin plays percussion, Garner's power on both keyboards drives the whole record from the top right down to the bottom. ✨✧ Stan GetzStan Getz In Paris Live ... LP
Verve (France), 1966. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A rare set from one of Stan Getz's hippest groups! The album was recorded in Paris in 1966, during a time in which Stan was working with a groundbreaking quartet that included Gary Burton on vibes, Steve Swallow on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – a combo that unfortunately got a bit overshadowed by Stan's bossa work, which was recorded in earlier years, but still getting issued and played heavily during the time of the Burton quartet's reign. The upshot of that situation was that the combo weren't nearly as exposed, or recorded, as much as they should have been – making the record an essential look at this under-documented side of Stan's career. Getz's tone is fantastic – and he glides freely with the young modernists in a way that you barely ever hear on any of his sides from the 60s, save for, perhaps, the sublime Sweet Rain LP. Titles include the long "The Knight Rides Again" – plus the tracks "Singing Song", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Edelweiss", and "Manha De Carnaval". LP, Vinyl record album

A previously-unreleased French recording of one of the greatest early compositions by Philip Glass – presented here in a recording that also features Glass himself as one of the performers! The group is a sextet – with organ work from Glass, Michael Riseman, Jon Gibson, and Joan LaBarbara – the last of whom also sings in a really beautiful way, in keeping with her reputation – and the group also features alto saxes from Dickie Landry and Richard Peck. The mixture of reeds and organ lines is fantastic – spinning out in these sonic cycles that are completely hypnotic, and which must have been hell to perform as a group together! Resonance, Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $22.99 24.99
Beautiful rare work from the late 60s years of Grant Green – a time when the guitarist was giving us some of his funk classics on Blue Note, and when he really seemed to be opening up his groove! That's definitely the case here – as the tracks aren't just funky, but also spin out at nicely long lengths – first on a set of tracks recorded for radio in Paris in 1969, with Green on guitar, Larry Ridley on bass, and Don Lamond on drums – working in a trio mode with a very different vibe than Grant's earlier work. Barney Kessel joins on second guitar on the tune "I Wish You Love", and other tracks include "I don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing", "Oleo", and "Untitled Blues". The second two thirds of the record are even more unbridled – and feature long live performances from the 1970 Antibes Festival – with a cool quartet that features Claude Bartee on tenor and Clarence Parker on Hammond. All tracks are well past the 10 minute mark, most pushing 20 – and titles include two versions of "Upshot", plus "Hi Heel Sneakers" and "Hurt So Bad". CD

A bit of a tribute to the talents of John Lewis – played by pianist Roland Hanna, a musician who's definitely inherited some of the grace and class that are part of the Lewis legacy! Many of the tunes here are Lewis originals from his famous years with the Modern Jazz Quartet – and a few others are Hanna-penned numbers that ring out with a similar sort of sophistication – carefully-chosen notes that fit together with a great sense of tone and timing, even though quite subtle – carried off well with help from George Mraz on bass and Lewis Nash on drums. Titles include "Perugia", "Portrait Of John Lewis", "Django", "Skating In Central Park", "Afternoon In Paris", and "Milano". CD

Francoise Hardy/Sacha DistelFrancoise Hardy/Canta Per Voi In Italiano/Swinging Jazz Guitarist (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A very cool little package – one that's got one CD of early work by French singer Francois Hardy – and two more CDs that feature lots of fantastic jazz material from Sacha Distel! CD1 features Hardy at her early best – singing blue-tinged French pop on both her debut album, and on a special album recorded in Italian – which features backings by Enzio Leoni, and tunes that are a nice variation from her better-known French material – especially as a number of tracks are reworked Italian versions of tunes from the first album! Titles include "Ca A Rate", "Oh Oh Cheri", "Il Est Parti Un Jour"," J'Suis D'Accord", "C'Est A L'Amour Auquel Je Pense", "L'Eta Dell'Amore", "Ci-Sto", "Per Tanto Tempo", "L'Amore Va", and "Quelli Della Mia Eta". The real treat here might be the music by Sacha Distel, though – as the artist is also known as a French pop singer, with many hits – but works here as a jazz guitarist, with a strongly chromatic sound! Amidst his vocal recordings, Sacha made a fair number of early jazz albums too – and nearly all of them are here on the set. The package features the EP Hommage A Django, with arrangements by Claude Bolling; another EP done in co-leadership with reedman Bobby Jaspar; performances with the Bobby Jaspar All Stars at Club Saint Germain; a quartet date with guitarist Jean-Pierre Sasson; Distel's famous album with pianist John Lewis, which also features great tenor from Barney Wilen; the very rare Jazz Today record, with trombone, arrangements, and songs by Billy Byers; and a few tracks from the soundtrack to Roger Vadim's Pride chapter of The Seven Deadly Sins. 36 Distel tracks in all – and 22 more by Hardy – all with a nice booklet of notes! Kitsos HarisiadisLament In A Deep Style – 1929 to 1931 ... CD
Third Man, Late 20s/Early 30s. New Copy ... $10.99 15.00
Clarinet music, but unlike anything else you might have heard before – as Greek musician Kitsos Harisiadis uses the instrument in a style that's quite far from American jazz and swing! Instead, the clarinet here is used on a series of folkloric tunes – music from the northwestern region of Greece, where Kitsos lived in the 20s – preserved here on vintage 78rpm recordings that are filled with rich tone and echo – audio that seems to transform the clarinet even more, as the instrument is set amidst spare percussion or stringed instrument backing – to soar out into space with a very melancholy vibe! Harisiadis is incredibly deft – running up and down the instrument with the speed and creativity of a free jazz musician, but always keeping things melodic, even when emotionally moving. Titles include "Zagorisio", "Dipli Gaida", "Skaros", "Mirologi In Do", "Stroto Pogonisio", "Miarologi Arvanitiko", and "Gaida". CD

Well, Hawk isn't really in Paris on this one – as the album was recorded in New York, with backings by Manny Albam – but the spirit of Paris is very much alive on the tunes, which are a mixture of postwar French favorites, and others that have a similar sound. A bicontinental beathead summit with Chicago's own Radius Etc pairing up with Paris producer Jostereo! Jostereo's side is an impressive blend that kicks off with a bit of classical piano that quickly settles in beats and bass that subtles pulls it into heady instrumental hip hop, and gets richer from there with electric keys and even a bit of Prince-esque electric soul guitar. Radius balances it all out nicely on the other side with snapping bass and hazy beats from the start, but mellows out to soul jazz piano backed beats to close out his side. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Michel LegrandBonjour Paris (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/El (UK), Late 50s. New Copy ... $3.99 13.99
Dreamy sounds from the legendary Michel Legrand – working here in a mode that's maybe a bit more lush and romantic than some of his later soundtrack work – yet at a level that's still head and shoulders above most of his 50s instrumental contemporaries! The set's got a melancholy vibe throughout – that sense of leaving that not only evokes a visitor having to head home after a trip in Paris, but also all the sadness and loss that the city experienced during the wartime years as well – even later, as American Gis had to head home – and were an obvious market for a record like this in the US! Tracks include "Bonjour Paris", "French Can Can", "Le Mer", "Two Loves Have I", and "A Paris Dans Chaque Faubourg". CD features lots of bonus tracks – including Yves Montand singing "Joli Maie", plus the tracks "Domino", "Pigalle", "Clopin Clopant", "Le Gars De Rochechouart", and "Boum". CD

Michel LegrandI Love Paris ... LP
Columbia, 1954. Near Mint- ... $2.99
A sparkling postwar musical fantasy of Paris – one made up of a host of famous themes from French pop music of the 20th century, all set to lush string arrangements by a young Michel Legrand! The album's not as upbeat or jazzy as some of Legrand's later soundtrack work, but it's got a wonderful quality all its own – a warmly romantic vision of a Paris that was still putting the pieces back together less than a decade after WWII, presented in a way that glosses sweet sounds over darker corners with a vaguely eerie feel. The record instantly made Legrand an international favorite, and features 16 tracks that include "Mademoiselle De Paris", "The Last Time I Saw Paris", "Paris Canaille", "Autumn Leaves", "A Paris", "La Vie En Rose", "Under Paris Skies", and "April In Paris. Michel Legrand revisits themes originally presented in his classic I Love Paris album for Columbia – updating them slightly here for the 60s with touches of styles that were beginning to show up in his later soundtrack work! While the overall feeling is still a romanticized version of Paris – one that's mostly mellow and dreamy – there's a new sophistication here from the original, and an approach that gets past some of the cliches to hit some particularly Legrand-like moments amidst the larger strings and orchestrations. Titles include "A Paris", "I Love Paris", "Autumn Leaves", "La Seine", "Paris In The Spring", "Paris Je T'Aime", and "Under Paris Skies". LP, Vinyl record album

Philips/Universal (Japan), 1959. New Copy ... About August 28, 2019
Some of the greatest jazz work ever recorded by Michel Legrand! Although Legrand's always been known for his sweet soundtrack work and his famous easy listening sides – he's also a heck of a jazz pianist, and here in this rare 1959 session, he works in a trio format that puts him right up there with the best of the French piano-technics of his generation, like Maurice Vander or Rene Utreger. The arrangements are wonderfully off-beat – and Legrand dances around the piano with a versatility that we didn't know he had. The group features Guy Pedersen on bass and Gus Wallez on drums – and titles include "Paris In The Spring", "Sous Les Ponts De Paris", "Paris Canaille", "Moulin Rouge", and "La Vie En Rose". CD

✨✧ Zara McFarlaneArise ... LP
Brownswood (UK), 2017. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Zara McFarlane is looking a lot more righteous on the cover of this one – and the sound is a lot more righteous too, as you might guess from the title! Zara's vocals have always been a tremendous instrument of power, but this time around she's directing them towards a great sense of social change – and working with spiritual jazz backings that almost give the record the sound of the older classics by Fertile Ground! Most numbers feature a small group blend of percussion and jazzy instrumentation – and the record has some good help from the duo of Binker Golding and Moses Boyd, who've turned out some great material of their own in recent years – and fit warmly inside the spirit of Zara's music. The whole thing takes us back not only to some of our favorite message-oriented soul of the 70s, but also to that wave of British underground soul at the start of the 90s, too – music helped along by Gilles Peterson long before he started the Brownswood label, in a legacy of which Zara McFarlane is the latest, greatest part. A key change for John McLaughlin – post-Mahavishnu, post-Shakti, and very much the electric guitarist promised in the title! The album's one of McLaughlin's more professional fusion outings of the 70s, but still has some of the earthiness of his roots – and despite a rather large lineup that includes players from both previous groups, plus some 70s fusion superstars, John still manages to make the album come across with a nicely personal feel. A lost treasure from the legendary Thelonious Monk – a live date recorded in Paris at the end of the 60s – late in Monk's life, and every bit as wonderful as his famous 60s studio work with his quartet! Of that group, only Charlie Rouse remains on tenor sax – but Rouse is more than enough to make things great, and the interplay between his tenor and Monk's piano is completely sublime – full of angular movements, underscored with plenty of soul – and given support from Nate Hygelund on bass and either Paris Wright or Philly Joe Jones on drums. There's a rough edge to the music that's really great – that sharper, more sinister vibe that Monk could have in a live setting – and titles include "Light Blue", "Bright Mississippi", "I Mean You", "Ruby My Dear", "I Love You Sweetheart Of All My Dreams", "Crepuscule With Nellie", and "Nutty". A pastoral name, but a really hard-hitting band – a power rock trio who come on with a sound that's incredibly full for such a small group! Most numbers here have some really heady bass work – rumbling at the bottom and giving a fuzzier, nastier edge to some of the tunes – and other instrumentation includes heavy drums, piano, and guitar – all used tightly, and with the sort of energy that was much more common for mainstream groups of the time, particularly in a post-Cream generation. Vocals by Gary Wagner are slightly soulful at times – a nice Bay Area sort of earnestness that really adds another layer to the record. Verve, Early 50s. Very Good ... $11.99
The genius of Bird and strings is hard to describe – an edgey aproach that really goes far past most other "jazz with strings" projects, not a ballad-driven one, but a tensely strained one that brings out some of Parker's best soloing, almost in a moody soundtrack-type way. The tracks are a lot freer and less bop-driven than some of Bird's normal work, and it's incredible to hear him soloing with such complexity – even more proof of the genius he clearly exhibited in relation to his contemporaries. The airy tones of guitarist John Abercrombie find a bit of a different setting here – a slight change from some of his earlier ECM albums, but still with a relatively open vibe overall! Jan Hammer's in the group on keyboards, but sounds thankfully very different than his Miami Vice fame – almost reminding us of his earliest jazz years in German, especially when he hits a nice groove – which is often echoed by strong tenor lines from Michael Brecker, whose voice might be the strongest in the set overall – although again, nicely different than his more famous material. If you ever needed a key example of the genius of Cannonball on Capitol Records, this tight little set may well be it! The record's got all the best elements of a Cannon classic firmly in place – production by David Axelrod, electric piano by Joe Zawinul, and some tremendously soulful work from Cannon and Nat Adderley on their respective horns – all presented with a sense of relaxed tightness (if we can use such a phrase) that's jaw-droppingly brilliant all the way through! Cannon speaks a bit and pushes the band into action with charisma and warmth caught nicely by Axelrod's recording – and the band grooves on long, snakey tunes that mix equal parts funk and soul jazz together, coming up with the quintessential Adderley groove on nearly every number! Tracks include the seminal "Why Am I Treated So Bad", plus "Mini Mama", "I'm On My Way", "One For Newk", "The Scene", "Yvette", and "The Other Side". LP, Vinyl record album

In the wake of Manu Dibango's big hit (and some kind of failure to register the copyright), many many versions of "Soul Makossa" were recorded and released, some good, some bad. This album is a good example of that situation – kind of a quickie project issued by Mainstream Records to cash in on the hit – but it's also an amazing bit of lost funk, and a record that's lasted for years in the hearts of beatheads! The group's a studio combo headed by Richard Fritz – and includes funky drummer Paul Humphrey, organist Charles Kynard, and guitarist David T Walker – all players we can trust to keep things groovy. The record does include a version of "Soul Makossa" that's pretty great – but even better is the breakbeat classic "House Of The Rising Funk", apparently the same version of the track that was issued on a 45 under the name The Chubukos. Other nice ones include "Kissing My Love", "Hot Mud", "Get It", "Hot Doggin", and "Let Me Do My Thing". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has a lightly bent corner, small smudge on front, and partially unglued bottom seam.)

AirtoFree/Identity/Promises Of The Sun (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Arista/BGO (UK), 1972/1975/1976. New Copy 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
A trio of albums from percussionist Airto – with bonus tracks too! First up is Free – one of the coolest, grooviest albums you'll ever hear from the legendary percussionist Airto – a set that mixes his own Brazilian roots with the electric genius of 70s CTI – all with stunning results! Airto's in the lead – and blows some beautiful wood flute lines alongside percussion – but the album also features killer contributions from Joe Farrell on soprano sax, Hubert Laws on flute, Keith Jarrett on piano, and Chick Corea on Fender Rhodes – as well as a hip bit of vocals from Flora Purim as well! There's some added horns at parts – but the arrangements are relatively spare and subtle – so that most tracks have a core organic quality, very similar to Airto's work on Buddah/Cobblestone, but given a bit more of a CTI twist. Most tunes are quite long and free-flowing – and titles include "Lucky Southern", "Flora's Song", "Creek (Arroio)", and "Return To Forever". Identity is a soaring set of grooves from one of the world's greatest percussionists – a standout set as a leader from Airto, and a key set in his wonderful run of work from the 70s! The album's still got the loose, free feel of Airto's earliest work, and isn't nearly as crossover-oriented as some of the Flora Purim sets from the time – still strongly in a rootsy, earthy sort of vibe – and produced with a very respectful sound by Herbie Hancock. Herbie plays some Arp on the record, and Wayne Shorter brings in some soprano sax too – but the core elements of the album are Airto's range of percussion instruments, keyboards and piano from Egberto Gismonti, drums from Roberto, trombone from Raul DeSouza, and a bit of vocals from Flora. Titles include "Flora On My Mind", "Cafe", "The Magicians", "Tales From Home", "Identity", and "Encounter". Promises Of The Sun is a record that departs nicely from earlier work, yet still keeps all the best elements intact! Airto's percussion work is firmly at the core of the set – giving it a nice acoustic base to work from, while also adding in touches of electric guitar by Toninho Horta, bass by Novelli, and keyboards from Hugo Fattoruso. The groove is a wonderful blend of the acoustic and electric, organic and synthetic – and is often crafted in a majestic vibe that seems to be inspired by the work of Milton Nascimento from the early 70s. Tracks include "Circo Marimbondo", "Zuei", "Candango", "Ruas Do Recife", "Georgiana", and "La De Casa". CD features bonus tracks "Creek (alt version)", "So Tender", and "Jequie". CD

Akofa AkoussahAkofa Akoussah ... CD
Sonafric/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A beautiful record from Akofa Akoussah – a singer from Togo who's equally gifted in funky and sweeter soul styles! Half the record is full-on funk, and we'd swear that Lafayette Afro Rock Band must have had a hand in some of the instrumentation (possible, as it was recorded in Paris) – as there's reed lines and trippy electric elements that feel like they're very much their work – especially the way they could make things wig out around the edges of the mix! And if they're not on the record, the sound is very similar on the funky numbers – which then leaves the sweeter tracks to bring in a bit more of an acoustic balance, and really foreground Akofa's amazing voice. Titles include "Tango", "La Lem", "Mitso Aseye", "Dandou Kodjo", "G Blem Di", and "Kimumbu". CD

✨✧ Laurindo AlmeidaGuitar From Ipanema ... LP
Capitol, Mid 60s. Very Good ... $9.99
Breezy bossa nova – Hollywood 60s style! The album's one of the best cut for Capitol by guitarist Laurindo Almeida – and has a sweet groovy little style that features Laurindo's lovely guitar work over some lightly dancing small combo backings that include flute, harmonica, organ, percussion, and even a bit of whistling on a few tracks! The vibe's very much in the best Verve/Impulse takes on the bossa – done with a clear California influence, which keeps things cool and breezy – and which also pushes Almeida past his sometimes-staid style on guitar. Two cuts also feature some great vocals by Irene Kral – and titles include "Twilight In Rio", "Old Guitaron", "Sarah's Samba", "Izabella", "Winter Moon", "Girl From Ipanema", and "Choro For People In Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label pressing. Cover has some splitting on the bottom seam.)
