Marisa AndersonCloud Corner ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 2018. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
Completely captivating work from Marisa Anderson – an instrumentalist who could easily match the groundbreaking sound of Takoma Records in the 60s with her work on albums like this! Marisa's a guitarist at heart – and mostly plays electric and acoustic on the record, using the instrument in this spare, open sort of way – far from American roots, but also very American at the same time – informed by all the modern changes on the instrument in the hands of the acoustic underground in recent decades, but delivered with a very down-to-earth approach that's extremely beautiful. Anderson plays a few other instruments over the course of the record – including a bit of Wurlitzer electric piano – bu the guitar dominates, in a wonderful way – on titles that include "Lift", "Sanctuary", "Surfacing", "Cloud Corner", "Sun Song", "Lament", "Slow Ascent", and "Pulse". Art Ensemble Of ChicagoParis Session ... LP
Arista, 1969/1973. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99
Nice 2LP set that brought the US some of the great recordings cut by the Art Ensemble while they were in Paris (some of which have also come out under the Black Lion imprint). All of the material was recorded in the Polydor Studios in Paris in 1969, and the tracks include "The Spiritual", "Tutankhamun", "Toro", "Tthintthedalen", and "Lori Song". The feel of the tracks is very laidback, spare, and similar to the material on People in Sorrow, which was recorded during the same period. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cutout hole, some wear, and discoloration from age.)

Edward ArtemievSolaris (suite) (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Mirumir/Superior Viaduct, 1972. Near Mint- ... $19.99
An amazing companion to the soundtrack album from the film Solaris – an extended suite of tracks that works in a very similar way – with electronics layered in these beautiful, hypnotic modes – sometimes noisy, sometimes pleasant – always compelling throughout, thanks to the visionary music of Edward Artemiev! This lovely package features a cool gatefold cover, with the images from the Italian poster of the film from the 70s – but the mindblowing music on the record is the real appeal – an extended suite of electronic sounds, in 17 movements! Gato BarbieriLast Tango In Paris ... LP
United Artists, 1972. Sealed ... $9.99
One of the greatest moments ever from saxophonist Gato Barbieri – and that's saying a lot, given that by the time of this recording, he'd already had a great 60s run as an avant jazz musician, and started the 70s with a string of albums that criss-crossed jazz and South American musical styles! Yet Last Tango In Paris may well be Barbieri's crowning achievement – a sublime record that draws on all the richer, more emotive themes of his Latin America projects, but gives them new focus in the arrangements of Oliver Nelson – who ensures that the music is never too cheesy or overdone – quite a feat, given the sexy setting of the film! Gato draws a lot from Argentine tango, but often uses his own sax solos in place of a more familiar bandoneon – in a way that pushes the "new tango" mode of the time even farther – especially when set amidst Nelson's wonderful orchestrations. Titles include many versions of the "Last Tango" theme, plus the tracks "Girl In Black", "Jeanne", "Why Did She Choose You?", "It's Over", and "Fake Ophelia". LP, Vinyl record album

Ray CharlesComplete 1961 Paris Recordings (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1961. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99 29.99
A really fantastic slice of work from Ray Charles – billed here as the only live recordings in which Ray played Hammond organ throughout – instead of his usual piano! The 3CD set brings together three full performances recorded in Paris on October 21 and 22 in 1961 – right at a point when Ray was moving between Atlantic and ABC Records – and working with lots of the strong jazzy charts used in his final years at the former label! The Hammond is fantastic, and a number of tracks are nice and long, with great instrumental solos – so much so that it's almost as if Charles' is putting that side of his skills forward first, then coming in for a vocal punch second. Some of these tracks have been issued before, but there's also a lot of unreleased titles in the package – and tunes include "One Mint Julep", "Moanin", "I'm Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town", "Hit The Road Jack", "What'd I Say", "Sticks & Stones", "I Wonder", "Just For A Thrill", "Doodlin", "Georgia", "Hallelujah I Love Her So", "From The Heart", "My Baby", and "I've Got News For You". Bill ColemanJazz In Paris – From Boogie To Funk ... CD
Universal (France), 1960. Used ... $11.99
Trumpeter Bill Coleman was one of many American players that made their home in Paris during the postwar years – and like many of his contemporaries on the scene, he cut some of his finest work in the city's rich sympathetic scene. This album's probably Coleman's finest – and it has a moody laidback sound that reminds us of the best albums on the Prestige Swingville label from the early 60s. No surprise that Coleman's got some strong backing by some of the Prestige crowd – including US jazz talents like Budd Johnson on tenor, Patti Brown on piano, Les Spann on guitar, and Quentin Jackson on trombone. The style of the set is a mixture of swing and hardbop – but the open-endedness of some of the tracks goes way past any easy marks that you might put on the music, pushing it into the full range of styles promised by the title. Titles include "Bill, Budd, & Butter", "Afromotive In Blue", "From Boogie To Funk (parts 1 & 2)", and "Colemanology". CD

John ColtraneJohn Coltrane Live In Paris – 17 Novembre 1962 ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1962. New Copy ... $15.99 19.99
Wonderful live work from the John Coltrane Quartet – tracks recorded in Paris during a famous 1962 European tour – and material that we're not sure we've seen anywhere else! The group here is, of course, that masterful lineup of Coltrane on tenor and soprano saxophone, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – really stretching out on long tracks that are full of modal energy, emphasized very strongly by Tyner and Garrison – and which have these beautiful solos from John that are very exploratory in both tone and phrasing, but which still hang more on the inside edge of the spectrum than his live work from a few years later. The set features a spoken introduction from Norman Granz – then moves into a 22 minute take on "Impressions", a 23 minute version of "My Favorite Things", and a 15 minut reading of "Mr PC" – plus a shorter, soulful ballad reading of "Everytime We Say Goodbye". Coltrane caught live in France on two days in July, 1965, with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones. The set includes two takes on "Impressions", one more out than the other, plus "Blue Valse", "Afro Blue", and "Naima" – all performed by a soulfully spiritual quartet that includes McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones. The material is very much like work from the Vanguard sessions – stretching, searching, but not as out there as later live sets – which is a good thing by us! CD

DaktarisSoul Explosion (original pressing) ... CD
Desco, 1998. Used ... $6.99
Reputedly, this is an African funk band recorded recently by the folks at Desco Records – but as with a lot of their projects, we're not entirely sure whether or not to believe them, since they're always a bit too mysterious about the origins of their material, and this may just be some new grooves, cut by a funk band of non-African origin. Whatever the case, though, the record kicks butt, and is a very tight batch of funky instrumentals that have a classic sound that hints at Fela, Manu Dibango, and other Afro Funk artists of the 70's. There's lots of choppy guitar grooves, heavy percussion, and raw blaring sax solos. Very nice stuff, and every bit as great as the other stuff on Desco! Cuts include a cover of Fela's "Upside Down", James Brown's "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose", and the originals "Super Afro-Beat", "Daktari Walk", "Voodoo Soul Stew", and "Quiet Man Is A Dead Man". CD

Philips, 1962. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Great early stuff by this swingin' French vocal group! These guys swung as hard as American groups, like Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross – but they stuck to hipper, jazzier material, and had a driving sound that never let up! Eddie DuranJazz Guitarist ... LP
Fantasy, 1957. Sealed ... $11.99
A great early album from San Francisco guitarist Eddie Duran – a player who's not that well known outside of his native city, but who's been a key contribution to the SF scene for many many years! On this Fantasy debut, Eddie's got a clean, lean, single-line style that's really great – a way of playing the guitar that nods a bit back towards Charlie Christian, but which also has some of the more sophisticated shadings of the best 50s innovators on the instrument. And although Eddie has appeared on other more Latin-based sets over the years, this album's a mostly straight jazz affair – bits of swing and bop that shift from track to track – played by Eddie with a small group that includes Howie Dudune on tenor and clarinet – on tracks that include "Soon", "Rise N Shine", "Taking Life Easy", "Sugar", "Room With A View", "Why Not", "It Could Happen To You", and "My Inspiration". Sublime late live work from Bill Evans – a well-recorded performance for French radio, and one that really stands out from some of the scratchier late 70s concerts on the market! Bill's working here with a sound as sensitive and picturesque as the cover image – never pushing things too hard, but letting each tune unfold organically in waves of sound few other players could conjure up! Trio musicians include Marc Johnson on bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums – and titles on this first volume include "Quiet Now", "My Romance", "Noelle's Theme", "I Loves You Porgy", and "Up With The Lark". Spotlite (UK), 1973. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A rare slice of work from Dexter Gordon – an early 70s live date in Paris, recorded by Jef Gilson, and featuring the George Arvanitas trio as a rhythm section, plus trumpet by the great Sonny Grey! The mix of players is totally great, and makes for a record that's fresher than some of Dex' other live European dates of the period – a bit loose and freewheeling, with some of the deeper soul of his early 60s years. Grey's trumpet is an especially nice aspect to the recording – but we also totally dig the bass of Jacky Samson and drums of Charles Saudrais! Arvanitas keeps his piano mostly pointed straight ahead – and titles include "Fried Bananas", "Caloon Bloos", "Dexter Leaps Out", and "No Matter How". LP, Vinyl record album

Rare live work from the lovely Juliette Greco – recorded right during the height of her career, when her hip style of chanson was really transforming the sound of French music from the left bank scene! The tracks here are all very well-recorded, and feature Juliette working with a small combo that includes piano, guitar, and musette – a nicely lean vibe that really offers up a different spirit of the songs than her studio recordings – as does the relaxed, completely charming stage presence of Greco. Jasmine (UK), 1950s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Fantastic early work from Rene Hall – a talent you've probably heard on record before in a variety of different formats – as Hall was a key arranger, producer, and session musician on the LA scene of the 50s and 60s! Yet here, Rene's also the leader – stepping out in small combo modes on a host of rare singles, both 78s and 45s – starting out in a mode that echoes some of the best jump blues/instrumental R&B styles coming out of LA in the postwar years – then moving into styles that are more rocking and early soul as the 50s move on! Hall plays guitar throughout, and other musicians include Plas Johnson and Buddy Tate on tenors, Ernie Freeman on piano, and Earl Palmer on drums – and the set features a whopping 29 tracks in all, including "My Uncle", "Bitter Winds", "Voodoo Moon", "Blue Creek Hop", "Chitling Switch", "The Parrot & The Rooster", "Southgate", "Cleo", "Thunderbird", "That's It", "The Untouchables", "Night Fright", and the fuzz guitar monster "Twitchy" – worth the price of the CD alone! Francoise HardyMidnight Blues – Paris/London 1968 to 1972 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $10.99 18.99
Rare English language recordings from the sublime Francoise Hardy – music that's every bit as wonderful as her famous French recordings – and even more compelling to our Anglo-styled ears! The vocals are wonderful – sung with this sense of darkness that's almost got an echo of Nico at points, given the accent – set to backings that balance this darkness with a bit more light, but never in ways that are overly poppy – and which definitely continue that more sophisticated style that Hardy always brought to her music! There's less "yeh yeh" to the tracks than a few years before – and Francoise is definitely digging deeper music at this point in her career – sometimes with a breathy brilliance that's a bit like Jane Birkin too. Titles include "Bown Bown Bown", "Till The Morning Comes", "Loving You", "In The Sky", "Midnight Blues", "Magic Horse", "Song Of Winter", "Strange Shadows", "Ocean", "The Garden Of Jane Delawney", "Sometimes", "Let My Name Be Sorrow", "Times Passing By", "I Just Want To Be Alone", and "Suzanne". El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A very cool little package – one that's got one CD of early work by French singer Francois Hardy – and two more CDs that feature lots of fantastic jazz material from Sacha Distel! CD1 features Hardy at her early best – singing blue-tinged French pop on both her debut album, and on a special album recorded in Italian – which features backings by Enzio Leoni, and tunes that are a nice variation from her better-known French material – especially as a number of tracks are reworked Italian versions of tunes from the first album! Titles include "Ca A Rate", "Oh Oh Cheri", "Il Est Parti Un Jour"," J'Suis D'Accord", "C'Est A L'Amour Auquel Je Pense", "L'Eta Dell'Amore", "Ci-Sto", "Per Tanto Tempo", "L'Amore Va", and "Quelli Della Mia Eta". The real treat here might be the music by Sacha Distel, though – as the artist is also known as a French pop singer, with many hits – but works here as a jazz guitarist, with a strongly chromatic sound! Amidst his vocal recordings, Sacha made a fair number of early jazz albums too – and nearly all of them are here on the set. The package features the EP Hommage A Django, with arrangements by Claude Bolling; another EP done in co-leadership with reedman Bobby Jaspar; performances with the Bobby Jaspar All Stars at Club Saint Germain; a quartet date with guitarist Jean-Pierre Sasson; Distel's famous album with pianist John Lewis, which also features great tenor from Barney Wilen; the very rare Jazz Today record, with trombone, arrangements, and songs by Billy Byers; and a few tracks from the soundtrack to Roger Vadim's Pride chapter of The Seven Deadly Sins. 36 Distel tracks in all – and 22 more by Hardy – all with a nice booklet of notes! Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1961. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
Hard-driving live work from Quincy Jones – material recorded during one of the most productive, creative years of his large jazz ensemble! Material is from a very hip all-star group – and in addition to the sorts of tracks that Quincy was doing for ABC and Mercury during the period, there's also some longer, extended tunes that really showcase the growing complexity of Quincy's music – and that visionary quality that would make him one of the hippest bandleaders in the world by the end of the 60s! Players include Sahib Shihab on baritone, Phil Woods on alto, Budd Johnson and Eric Dixon on tenor, Freddie Hubbard and Benny Bailey on trumpets, Melba Liston and Curtis Fuller on trombones, Les Spann on guitar and flute, Patti Brown on piano, Stu Martin on drums, and Patato Valdes on congas – and long tracks include extended takes on "Stolen Moments"," Africana", and "Banja Luka" – plus other titles that include "Gwan Train", "Moanin", "Solitude", "Caravan", "Boy In The Tree", and "Summertime". A bicontinental beathead summit with Chicago's own Radius Etc pairing up with Paris producer Jostereo! Jostereo's side is an impressive blend that kicks off with a bit of classical piano that quickly settles in beats and bass that subtles pulls it into heady instrumental hip hop, and gets richer from there with electric keys and even a bit of Prince-esque electric soul guitar. Radius balances it all out nicely on the other side with snapping bass and hazy beats from the start, but mellows out to soul jazz piano backed beats to close out his side. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Fierce, freewheeling work by this excellent group – a quartet that features mindblowing trombone from Eje Thelin, a player we totally love – plus piano from Joachim Kuhn, who also blows a bit of alto sax – and bass from Adelhard Roidinger and drums from Jacques Thollot. Very free at times – and with the same energy as the BYG/Actuel releases! LP, Vinyl record album

Michel LegrandParis Jazz Piano ... CD
Philips/Universal (Japan), 1959. New Copy ... $16.99
Some of the greatest jazz work ever recorded by Michel Legrand! Although Legrand's always been known for his sweet soundtrack work and his famous easy listening sides – he's also a heck of a jazz pianist, and here in this rare 1959 session, he works in a trio format that puts him right up there with the best of the French piano-technics of his generation, like Maurice Vander or Rene Utreger. The arrangements are wonderfully off-beat – and Legrand dances around the piano with a versatility that we didn't know he had. The group features Guy Pedersen on bass and Gus Wallez on drums – and titles include "Paris In The Spring", "Sous Les Ponts De Paris", "Paris Canaille", "Moulin Rouge", and "La Vie En Rose". CD

One of the best soul jazz sides on the Black & Blue label – a great late 60s session from trumpeter Johnny Letman – one of a number of older American ex-patriots in Paris! Although Letman worked with Horace Henderson, Basie, and Cab Calloway, he really didn't make many recordings as a leader – but he really shines on this laidback session – blowing in a mellow and open-ended way that reminds us of some of the Prestige/Swingville sides of the early 60s. The group here includes Hal Singer on tenor, Tiny Grimes on guitar, and Milt Bucker on piano and organ – and titles include "Funky Day In Paris", "Po Man's Blues", and "On A Persian Market". A key change for John McLaughlin – post-Mahavishnu, post-Shakti, and very much the electric guitarist promised in the title! The album's one of McLaughlin's more professional fusion outings of the 70s, but still has some of the earthiness of his roots – and despite a rather large lineup that includes players from both previous groups, plus some 70s fusion superstars, John still manages to make the album come across with a nicely personal feel. Guitars are acoustic and electric, six string and twelve – and titles include "Miles Davis", "Guardian Angels", "Singing Earth", "The Dark Prince", "The Unknown Dissident", and "Desire & The Contorter". Nice price reissue of some great Mingus live sides from the mid 60's, recorded in Paris during his important European tour of 1964. The group, which (we think) includes Dolphy, runs through tight readings of some of Mingus' best compositions from this period, including "Orange Was the Color of Her Dress", "Meditations for Integration", and "Peggy's Blue Skylight". The tracks are long, and there's a lot of space for the kind of crazy out soloing that makes Mingus live recordings a treat at all times. CD

✨✧ Anthony OrtegaAfternoon In Paris – Anthony Ortega Solos & Duos ... CD
Hatology (Switzerland), 2002/2005. Used ... $11.99
A beautiful illustration of the deep talents of Anthony Ortega – a player who still sounds as creative and inventive this late in his career as he did way back in the 50s and 60s! The bulk of the CD features Ortega in two settings – one, a batch of studio duets with bassist Kash Killion; the other a series of live solo performances, recorded in Paris by a video camera! The Killion duets have a wonderfully warm, round sound – acoustic bass set up next to Ortega's alto and flute, with a carefully structured approach that's extremely thoughtful, and almost poetic. The live solos have a much rougher sound – partly from the starkness of the video recording, but also because they represent Oretga taking it much more off the cuff – just spinning things out on alto sax with a sound that's a fair bit like the old days. And to cap things off – speaking of the old days – the CD closes with one more duet from the 60s – a track that has Ortega and bassist Chuck Domanico playing together from an older Revelation session, appearing here for the first time ever! That track is a long version of "Ornithology", and other titles include "Ask Me Now", "Jupiter", "Blue Monk", "I'll Remember April", "Now's The Time", and "Open Spaces". CD

MCA/Impulse (Japan), 1962. Used ... $16.99
A rare gem by singer Jackie Paris – an underrecorded LA singer from the 50s and 60s, with a sound and style that's somewhere between early Mark Murphy and later Bobby Troup! Paris has less of the vocalese approach of some of his contemporaries – and is also lacking the heavy vocal style of singers like Johnny Hartman or Billy Eckstine – which means that he's got a bright, to the point approach that's rare for singers of his generation. Arrangements on the set are by Bobby Scott – who does a good job of shifting between jazzy and moody to fit the range of the material – and titles include "Jenny", "My Very Good Friend In The Looking Glass", "Nobody Loses All The Time", "Duke's Place", "Thad's Blues", and "Cinderella". Fantasy/Craft, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... On September 26, 2020
A pastoral name, but a really hard-hitting band – a power rock trio who come on with a sound that's incredibly full for such a small group! Most numbers here have some really heady bass work – rumbling at the bottom and giving a fuzzier, nastier edge to some of the tunes – and other instrumentation includes heavy drums, piano, and guitar – all used tightly, and with the sort of energy that was much more common for mainstream groups of the time, particularly in a post-Cream generation. Vocals by Gary Wagner are slightly soulful at times – a nice Bay Area sort of earnestness that really adds another layer to the record. Titles include "Dynaflow", "My Eyes Are Getting Heavy", "Silver Ghost", "Lucanna", "Skid Row Runner", "How Can You Win", "Take Me With You When You Go", and "Ain't Feelin Too Bad". Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $22.99 29.99
A wealth of rare live material from legendary pianist Oscar Peterson – all recorded in Paris during a time when his star was really rising on the global scene! All material was recorded for French radio, at the Olympia Theater in the city – and the package mostly features the famous trio with Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums – save for four tracks that feature the earlier group with Brown and Herb Ellis on guitar! For fans of the important Thigpen years – which most folks know from the early 60s Verve Recordings – this huge amount of material is a dream come true – especially as the set is very heavily focused on tracks from the years of 1961 and 1962, when the trio was in top form. Many tracks are quite long – in territory similar to the Live In Chicago recordings by the group – and titles include "Cubano Chant", "Moanin", "Whisper Not", "Somewhere", "I Feel Pretty", "Dizzy Atmosphere", "On Green Dolphin Street", "The Lamp Is Low", "My Heart Stood Still", "Jet Song", "Tin Tin Deo", "Daahoud", "Jordu", "Little Suzie", "Ill Wind", and "I Remember Clifford". Transparency, 1973. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Rare Sun Ra – so much so, it's falling off the reel – but also fortunately nicely resurrected here by the folks at Transparency, who've been doing a great job of unearthing obscure Arkestra performances from the group's best years! This album dates from 1973, and comes from a Gibus performance in Paris – one that features the group moving between some fierce, free, avant-styled work – and some more spiritual moments that are very much in the best Space Is The Place vintage! As part of that latter half, vocals figure in nicely at a few spots – sung by June Tyson, Ruth Wright, Cheryl Banks, and Judith Holton – and the core group features John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto and flute, Danny Ray Thompson on baritone and flute, Danny Davis on alto and alto clarinet, James Jacson on bassoon and flute, Eloe Omoe on bass clarinet and flute, Kwami Hadi and Akh Tal Ebah on trumpets – a very horn-heavy lineup that sounds great here. Ra plays electric keyboard and "space instruments" – and titles include "Prepare For The Journey To Other Worlds", "Swing Low Sweet Chariot", "Why Go To The Moon", "Discipline 27", and "Astro Black". Transversales Disques (France), 1975. New Copy Gatefold ... $34.99
A gem of a record from the legendary Pharoah Sanders – a set that's recorded right at the tail end of his famous years for Impulse Records, and which has all the best qualities of his last few records for that label! The vibe here is a lot like Elevation or Love Is In Us All – a return to warmer, more spiritual modes, with less of the completely outside qualities of Sanders' early 70s material – a great flow, lots of modal energy in the rhythms, and that mix of soul and freedom that reminds us again that Pharoah is one of the founders of the spiritual jazz style! The group features Danny Mixon on piano and organ, Calvin Hill on bass, and Greg Bandy on drums – and the music was all recorded by ORTF Radio, with fantastic fidelity – and this reissue is completely legit, and remastered from the original tapes. Cannonball AdderleyWhy Am I Treated So Bad? ... LP
Capitol, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
If you ever needed a key example of the genius of Cannonball on Capitol Records, this tight little set may well be it! The record's got all the best elements of a Cannon classic firmly in place – production by David Axelrod, electric piano by Joe Zawinul, and some tremendously soulful work from Cannon and Nat Adderley on their respective horns – all presented with a sense of relaxed tightness (if we can use such a phrase) that's jaw-droppingly brilliant all the way through! Cannon speaks a bit and pushes the band into action with charisma and warmth caught nicely by Axelrod's recording – and the band grooves on long, snakey tunes that mix equal parts funk and soul jazz together, coming up with the quintessential Adderley groove on nearly every number! Tracks include the seminal "Why Am I Treated So Bad", plus "Mini Mama", "I'm On My Way", "One For Newk", "The Scene", "Yvette", and "The Other Side". LP, Vinyl record album

Jazz versions of classics by Antonio Carlos Jobim – all done by a group arranged and directed by guitarist Mario Adnet, and featuring guest work from Joyce, Helio Delmiro, Romero Lumbambo, and others! The sound here is really fresh – not merely just a reworking of Jobim's original ideals, but a recasting of them in lightly arranged modes that often take on the shapes, colors, and textures of work by Moacir Santos – styles that are warm, but often have some sharper edges underneath, thanks to great interplay between the instruments. Bits of horns, guitar, piano, and percussion all come together with a tremendous sense of grace – and titles include "Tema Jazz", "Sue Ann", "Domingo Sincopado", "So Danco Samba", "Paulo Voo Livre", "Polo Pony", and "Bate Boca". AfriqueSoul Makossa ... CD
Mainstream/P-Vine (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $16.99
A killer album of Afro Funk – with a very unusual origin! In the wake of Manu Dibango's big hit (and some kind of failure to register the copyright), many many versions of "Soul Makossa" were recorded and released, some good, some bad. This album is a good example of that situation – kind of a quickie project issued by Mainstream Records to cash in on the hit – but it's also an amazing bit of lost funk, and a record that's lasted for years in the hearts of beatheads! The group's a studio combo headed by Richard Fritz – and includes funky drummer Paul Humphrey, organist Charles Kynard, and guitarist David T Walker – all players we can trust to keep things groovy. The record does include a version of "Soul Makossa" that's pretty great – but even better is the breakbeat classic "House Of The Rising Funk", apparently the same version of the track that was issued on a 45 under the name The Chubukos. Other nice ones include "Kissing My Love", "Hot Mud", "Get It", "Hot Doggin", and "Let Me Do My Thing". CD

The wildly diverse, heavily percussive global jazz, soul, and exotica inspired Afrodesia from the late 60s combo Afro Soultet – a crazy rare one, too! The group purportedly has roots in Texas, but incarnations of it were gigging around LA a bit earlier as Afro Latin Blues Quintet +1 and a bit later as Afro Latin Soultet. Here they play with boundless inspiration from around the globe. Afro Latin percussion and rhythms hold it all together, but they bring in strains of Latin soul, African rhythms, straighter jazz and madly percussive instrumental rock. Producer/composer/arranger/raconteur Jack Millman plays drums in the group as Johnny Kitchen, and other players include Joey Dubreau on vibes, Frank Morris on guitar and harmonica, Eddie Paris on drums, Dean Elliot on percussion, William Quinn on flute & sax, and Bill Collins on keys. Includes "Afrodesia", "Mozamba", "Soul Rockin'", "Afro Revolt", "Torrid Zone", "Oom Gowa", "Slave Traders", "Drumbouie", "Aphro Bugaloo", "Chocolate Drop", "Le Berber" and "Sand, Sun And Sea". CD

Mighty nice work from a really inventive duo – the team of Ryan Oslance on drums and Shane Parish on guitar – both musicians who work with a criss-crossing sound that's part jazz, flavored maybe partly by rock – in a blend that really continues the legacy of some important Chicago sounds of the final years of the 20th Century! There's a wide array of textures from the guitar – sometimes more pronounced leads, sometimes subtle sonic energy, and sometimes rhythmic blasts that really echo the work on drums – which also has a way of stepping between conventional and more unusual modes, as both musicians progress in styles that often have a relatively rhythmic core. Titles include "Power With", "Erosion", "Sundowning", "Rincon Pio Sound", "La Faena", and "Shelter In Place" – a tune that maybe resonates more differently now than when it was recorded! CD

A fantastic album from trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire – a set that really kicks his career up to the next level, and which is easily the most powerful record he's ever given us! The music finds Ambrose in many moods, all of them righteous – sometimes blowing hard and fierce in a small combo, sometimes issuing out more personal statements in a more stripped-down setting – working with players that include Harish Raghavan on bass, Justin Brown on drums, and Sam Harris on piano – plus vocalist Genevieve Artadi on one especially beautiful number that features Akinmusire on Fender Rhodes! We've loved the music of Ambrose for many years – and this is one of those faith-rewarding sets that always makes it so wonderful to follow the career of any key jazz musician – as we hope you'll also find on titles that include "Roy", "4623", "Moon", "Tide Of Hyacinth", "Cynical Sideliners", and "Mr Roscoe". A beautiful record from Akofa Akoussah – a singer from Togo who's equally gifted in funky and sweeter soul styles! Half the record is full-on funk, and we'd swear that Lafayette Afro Rock Band must have had a hand in some of the instrumentation (possible, as it was recorded in Paris) – as there's reed lines and trippy electric elements that feel like they're very much their work – especially the way they could make things wig out around the edges of the mix! And if they're not on the record, the sound is very similar on the funky numbers – which then leaves the sweeter tracks to bring in a bit more of an acoustic balance, and really foreground Akofa's amazing voice. Titles include "Tango", "La Lem", "Mitso Aseye", "Dandou Kodjo", "G Blem Di", and "Kimumbu". CD
