Claudio TallinoCalamo (with bonus CD) ... LP
Aris/Sonor (Italy), 1976. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99
A pretty fantastic soundtrack to a movie that looks pretty darn spooky – not in the usual Italian horror way, but more in an earthy, ritualistic sort of mode! As part of that vibe, the music's got this great current of sex – some funky elements mixed with grittier sounds – often electric bass balanced with raw percussion, or a sweet electric bit moving alongside an acoustic one – an approach that sounds especially nice when pounding piano lines play out with a great sense of strength! There's also some especially nice flute – used almost as this surprising current of innocence, which gets cool counterpoint from some fuzzier guitar. Titles include "The Priest", "Lone Stepbrother", "The Rite", "Sweet Mouth Stepsister", "Smoke Gets In Your Head", and "The End". LP features an unreleased track – "M20 Canone". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes bonus CD – which seems to have some bonus tracks too!)

Raw rockers, offbeat groovers, and lots more odd bits from the glory days of the indie single – pulled together here in a package that sounds as sexy as it looks! The Stag-O-Lee label has been giving us some great collections in recent years, and this one's right at the top of their stack – a really well-chosen batch of unusual singles from the early years of rock and soul – served up in a mighty nice 10" package. Titles include "The Call Of The Jungle" by Carl Stevens, "Princess Of Persia" by Billy Grammer, "Yabucoa" by Hector Rivera, "Similau" by Bobby Darin, "Alba's Shake" by Aris Carandanis, "This Must Be Love" by Ruth Christie, "Jack Hammer" by Rusty Evans, "Noah" by Grainger Hunt, and "Women Are The Root Of All Evil" by Paul Williams. Vogue/King (Japan), 1953. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Amazing Paris work from Clifford Brown – recording here in extra-special company with alto saxophonist Gigi Gryce! The tunes have all that sharp edge and smart tone we love in Gryce's 50s work – and all numbers are originals by Gigi – blown beautifully by Brown in that famous style of his, and matched with wonderful alto lines by Gryce. There's a completely impeccable quality to the whole thing – nascent modern jazz at its best – and other players include Henri Renaud on piano, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Jean-Louis Viale on drums – and Jimmy Gourley plays guitar on a handful of numbers. Features 3 takes on "Minority", 2 takes of "Salute To The Band Box" and "Baby", and the cut "Strictly Romantic". LP, Vinyl record album

James BrownLove Power Peace – Live At The Olympia Paris 1971 ... CD
Polydor (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $13.99
A lost treasure from James Brown & The JBs – a vintage live performance from the early 70s, and one that captures the group at the height of their powers! The format here is very similar to the excellent Revolution Of The Mind set – a totally funky, totally righteous live performance that has James and the group even more energized than in the studio – working with the kind of razor-sharp intensity that made them a legendary funk act – leaping from tune to tune with nary a break at all! Bobby Byrd acts as the MC, and joins James for a bit of vocals – and the group at this point still includes Bootsy Collins on bass, plus loads of great guitar from Catfish Collins, and Fred Wesley on trombone and Jabo Starks on drums. Dave Matthews handled some of the arrangements – and titles include "Soul Power", "Sex Machine", "Bewildered", "It's A New Day", "Ain't It Funky Now", "Brother Rapp", "Super Bad", "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose", and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag/I Got You/I Got The Feelin". Burnt SugarNot April In Paris – The Arkestra Chamber Live 01 At Banlieues Bleues ... CD
Trugroid, 2004. Used ... $2.99
A mesmerizing set of jazzy space funk from the ever-evolving Burnt Sugar collective – captured live at Banlieus Bleues in France, in March of '04! The Arkestra tag in the group's moniker couldn't be more appropriate for these cats – as the vibe indeed runs through the cestial groove of Sun Ra and electric Miles, but the crew also dips heartily into the playbook of prime Art Ensemble and the lowdown funky drive of Funkadelic. The crew for this live set includes the great sax core of Matana Roberts on alto and Petre Radu-Scafaru on tenor, Jason Di Matteo on acoustic bass, Jared Nickerson on electric bass, Julia Kent on cello, Rene Akan on guitar, Satch Hoyt of flute, Lewis Flip Barnes on trumpet, Trevor Holder and Chris Eddleton on drums, Bruce Mack on synth, plus a line-up of improvising vocalists that includes Lisala, Jeremiah and Justuce Dilla-X. Tracks include "Springtime For Chillin By Bruce Mack", "Half Moon Flippers", "Jungle Fibre", "Mazzafrique","Jeremiah The Gallic", "Held In Faith" featuring vocals by Lisala, "Panpipes And Sprites", "The Blood Of Pomegranates", Resurrection Rag" and more. Don CherryStudio 105 – Paris 1967 ... CD
Hi Hat, 1967. New Copy ... $16.99
A fantastic album from the great Don Cherry – and maybe one of the earliest examples of the way that he mixed together avant jazz and a globe's worth of influences on the European scene! The album features three long tracks – all seemingly improvised – very heavy on percussion, with work from Karl Berger on vibes, marimba, piano, celeste, and other percussion – and Jacques Thollot on drums and timbales – while Cherry himself plays gong, alongside his more familiar cornet, plus piano and a bit of bamboo flute. There's a huge amount going on here – almost as if Cherry is trying to invent spiritual and loft jazz modes at the same time – with a warmth, cohesion, and sense of soul that's a different than his more famous Paris recordings for the BYG label a few years later. Titles include "Infant Happiness", "Symphony For Improviser", and "Elephantasy". CD

Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1960. New Copy ... $14.99 18.98
A dream of a collaboration – the great Nat King Cole in his prime, getting some mighty hip backings from the equally great Quincy Jones – who gives Nat a jazzy push that he wasn't always getting on his Capitol Records sessions of the time! The performance was recorded live in Paris on the same 1960 tour that has given us a few other rare Cole/Jones collaborations – but this one may well be the best of the bunch, as the fidelity is great – with an equal balance on Nat's wonderful vocal phrasing, and all the strongly soulful elements that Quincy brings to the band. Titles include "Tickle Toe", "Lester Leaps In", "Dance Ballerina Dance", "The Continental", "Darling Je Vous Aime Beaucoup", "Route 66", "It's Only A Paper Moon", "Joe Turner's Blues", "Welcome To The Club", "Blues In The Night", and "Thou Swell". A rare early side of Miles Davis – recorded in postwar Paris in the company of Tadd Dameron! The group's a quintet – with Miles on trumpet and Tadd on piano – and although the overall vibe certainly shows a lot of bop generation spirit, there's also a strong indication of the deeper ideas that were already becoming a part of both artists' music. The group features some excellent work on tenor from James Moody – plus bass from Barney Spieler and drums from Kenny Clarke. Tunes include a fair bit of familiar numbers from the Charlie Parker camp – and titles include "Rifftide", "Good Bait", "Don't Blame Me", "Lady Bird", "Wah Hoo", "Allen's Alley", "Embraceable You", "Ornithology" and "All The Things You Are". Philips, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... $16.99
One of the great records made by the cool French jazzy vocal group that included Ward Swingle and Christine LeGrand, and which did stuff that was much more straightforwardly jazzy than the semi-classical work of the Swingle Singers. This LP's got them backed by Jerome Richardson and his quartet, and has them running through a set of tracks associated with Ray Charles' Atlantic work. Cuts include "Stompin' Room Only, "Hit The Road, Jack", "Yes, Indeed", and "One Mint Julep", and all have a swingin' jazz vocalese sound. Cool stuff by one of the great lost groups of the 60's. Rare US issue of this amazing album by the legendary French vocal group Les Double Six. The group included a core of the early Swingle Singers, and featured members Ward Swingle and Christine Legrand, two of France's best jazz vocalists at the time. On this LP, the group runs through a tightly swinging set of vocalese versions of Quincy Jones compositions and arrangements – including classics like "Doodlin", "Meet Benny Bailey", "French Rat Race", and "Boo's Bloos". Duke EllingtonGreat Paris Concert ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1963. Used 2CD ... $11.99
Did Ellington ever record in concert and it not be great? This wonderful double-length set from the 60s is key proof of his genius in an unfettered live setting – recorded in Paris in 1963 with plenty of dark edges! The tracks are short overall, but Duke's really at the head of the group on piano – playing with those angular, modern tones he picked up in the post Money Jungle years – and clearly in charge of the group from the keyboard, not the podium. Horn players include Harry Carney, Ray Nance, Lwarence Brown, Cootie Williams, Johnny Hodges, and Paul Gonsalves – all bringing in some special tones and unique performances to an extended set list that includes both Ellington standards and a few lesser-known numbers. Titles include "Rockin In Rhythm", "Concerto For Cootie", "Suite Thursday", "Tone Parallel To Harlem", "Bula", "Cop Out", "Happy Go Lucky Local", "Theme From Asphalt Jungle", and "Star-Crossed Lovers". Aretha Franklin sings it loud and proud, in front of a classy crowd at the Olympia Theater in Paris – a move that would have made Berry Gordy proud, but which is carried off here in a classic Atlantic mode throughout! Given the tight studio handling of Aretha during these early Atlantic years, the live setting is a nice surprise – and shows that the Jerry Wexler touch could still hold strong, and present a concert version of Franklin's new groove that was every bit as great as the studio one. Aretha's vocals are right up front in the mix, and gets a bit of backing support from a trio that includes her sister Carolyn. Titles include "Baby, I Love You", "Soul Serenade", "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream", "Natural Woman", "Chain Of Fools", "Respect", and "Come Back Baby". LP, Vinyl record album

Stan GetzStan Getz – Live In Paris 1959 ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1959. New Copy ... $14.99 18.98
A fantastic live performance from Stan Getz – recorded in Paris at the end of the 50s, and with maybe a bit more of an edge than some of his other European concerts! One of the key factors here is the budding modernist Martial Solal on piano – who makes a nicely surprising partner for Stan – in a group that also features Jimmy Gourley on guitar, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – certainly something of a French pick-up group, but one that's top shelf all the way through! Stan's got a wonderful sharpness to his tone – with that growing sense of fullness that would mature in the 60s, but still also this link that maybe goes a bit back towards Lester Young too – spun out on long takes of familiar tunes, very well-recorded as on other selections in this series. Titles include "The Squirrel", "Yardbird Suite", "All The Things You Are", "Topsy", "Tenderly", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "Round Midnight", and "Special Club". CD

Stan GetzStan Getz In Paris Live ... LP
Verve (France), 1966. Very Good+ ... $28.99
A rare set from one of Stan Getz's hippest groups! The album was recorded in Paris in 1966, during a time in which Stan was working with a groundbreaking quartet that included Gary Burton on vibes, Steve Swallow on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – a combo that unfortunately got a bit overshadowed by Stan's bossa work, which was recorded in earlier years, but still getting issued and played heavily during the time of the Burton quartet's reign. The upshot of that situation was that the combo weren't nearly as exposed, or recorded, as much as they should have been – making the record an essential look at this under-documented side of Stan's career. Getz's tone is fantastic – and he glides freely with the young modernists in a way that you barely ever hear on any of his sides from the 60s, save for, perhaps, the sublime Sweet Rain LP. Titles include the long "The Knight Rides Again" – plus the tracks "Singing Song", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Edelweiss", and "Manha De Carnaval". LP, Vinyl record album

A very famous moment from Dizzy Gillespie – tracks from his famous concert at Salle Pleyel, in Paris, from 1953! Gillespie's in fine form throughout – working in a great mix of bop and modern elements, with a few occasional playful touches to please the crowd – but never in a way that cuts into the integrity of his music at all! El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A very cool little package – one that's got one CD of early work by French singer Francois Hardy – and two more CDs that feature lots of fantastic jazz material from Sacha Distel! CD1 features Hardy at her early best – singing blue-tinged French pop on both her debut album, and on a special album recorded in Italian – which features backings by Enzio Leoni, and tunes that are a nice variation from her better-known French material – especially as a number of tracks are reworked Italian versions of tunes from the first album! Titles include "Ca A Rate", "Oh Oh Cheri", "Il Est Parti Un Jour"," J'Suis D'Accord", "C'Est A L'Amour Auquel Je Pense", "L'Eta Dell'Amore", "Ci-Sto", "Per Tanto Tempo", "L'Amore Va", and "Quelli Della Mia Eta". The real treat here might be the music by Sacha Distel, though – as the artist is also known as a French pop singer, with many hits – but works here as a jazz guitarist, with a strongly chromatic sound! Amidst his vocal recordings, Sacha made a fair number of early jazz albums too – and nearly all of them are here on the set. The package features the EP Hommage A Django, with arrangements by Claude Bolling; another EP done in co-leadership with reedman Bobby Jaspar; performances with the Bobby Jaspar All Stars at Club Saint Germain; a quartet date with guitarist Jean-Pierre Sasson; Distel's famous album with pianist John Lewis, which also features great tenor from Barney Wilen; the very rare Jazz Today record, with trombone, arrangements, and songs by Billy Byers; and a few tracks from the soundtrack to Roger Vadim's Pride chapter of The Seven Deadly Sins. 36 Distel tracks in all – and 22 more by Hardy – all with a nice booklet of notes! Third Man, Late 20s/Early 30s. New Copy Gatefold ... $16.99 18.00
Clarinet music, but unlike anything else you might have heard before – as Greek musician Kitsos Harisiadis uses the instrument in a style that's quite far from American jazz and swing! Instead, the clarinet here is used on a series of folkloric tunes – music from the northwestern region of Greece, where Kitsos lived in the 20s – preserved here on vintage 78rpm recordings that are filled with rich tone and echo – audio that seems to transform the clarinet even more, as the instrument is set amidst spare percussion or stringed instrument backing – to soar out into space with a very melancholy vibe! Harisiadis is incredibly deft – running up and down the instrument with the speed and creativity of a free jazz musician, but always keeping things melodic, even when emotionally moving. There's an open, flowing quality to the work that's great – a bit more of a relaxed vibe than the Woody Herman sound, with lots of nice Parisian postwar touches in the way the tunes are put together. John Lewis & Sacha DistelAfternoon In Paris ... CD
Atlantic, 1956. Used ... $6.99
We would gladly trade every other John Lewis album for a copy of this album – because the album's a treasure all the way through – and a really unique set, with a really unique feel! The session features Lewis' piano in the company of a hip French group that includes Sasha Distel on guitar, Pierre Michelot on bass, and the great Barney Wilen on tenor – all great players who bring out a whole new side of Lewis' genius! Wilen's solos alone are worth the price of the album – deeply soulful, with a resonant tone that's some of his greatest on record – and an easy illustration of why he was one of the few European players of the postwar years to get big notice on this side of the Atlantic. But amazingly, Sacha Distel's also great here too – and despite the fact that he later went onto become a vocal pop star, Distel displays a beautiful approach to jazz guitar that makes us wish we had more sessions of his from these days. Titles include "Afternoon In Paris", "I Cover The Waterfront", and "All The Things You Are" – but don't let the titles alone speak for the record, because every track is beautiful! CD

Baris MancoNick The Chopper ... CD
Pharaway Sounds (Spain), 1976. New Copy ... $16.99
Baris Manco was one of the leading lights of the Turkish music scene in the 70s, but that didn't stop him from setting his sights on points farther west – as you'll hear on this funky gem from the mid 70s, complete with English language lyrics for the sorts of tunes that could have burst out big, had they gotten the chance! The tracks aren't as much in an Arabesk mode as Manco's earlier music, and instead he works here with a host of funky studio musicians in Belgium – including players who'd worked with Placebo and Janko Nilovic – on tunes that are surprisingly catchy, even if the lyrics are a bit offbeat – and which feature plenty of riffing guitar, often with this cool compressed mode that really sets the scene. Titles include "Lucky Road", "Lonely Man"," Little Darlin", "Blue Morning Angel", "Tell Me Old Man", "Emerald Garden", "Ride On Miranda", and "Nick The Chopper". CD

Zara McFarlaneArise ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
Zara McFarlane is looking a lot more righteous on the cover of this one – and the sound is a lot more righteous too, as you might guess from the title! Zara's vocals have always been a tremendous instrument of power, but this time around she's directing them towards a great sense of social change – and working with spiritual jazz backings that almost give the record the sound of the older classics by Fertile Ground! Most numbers feature a small group blend of percussion and jazzy instrumentation – and the record has some good help from the duo of Binker Golding and Moses Boyd, who've turned out some great material of their own in recent years – and fit warmly inside the spirit of Zara's music. The whole thing takes us back not only to some of our favorite message-oriented soul of the 70s, but also to that wave of British underground soul at the start of the 90s, too – music helped along by Gilles Peterson long before he started the Brownswood label, in a legacy of which Zara McFarlane is the latest, greatest part. Titles include "Pride", "Peace Begins Within", "Stoke The Fire", "Freedom Chain", "Allies Or Enemies", "In Between Worlds", "Fisherman", and "Fussin & Fightin". CD

Columbia, 1978. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $5.99
A key change for John McLaughlin – post-Mahavishnu, post-Shakti, and very much the electric guitarist promised in the title! The album's one of McLaughlin's more professional fusion outings of the 70s, but still has some of the earthiness of his roots – and despite a rather large lineup that includes players from both previous groups, plus some 70s fusion superstars, John still manages to make the album come across with a nicely personal feel. Guitars are acoustic and electric, six string and twelve – and titles include "Miles Davis", "Guardian Angels", "Singing Earth", "The Dark Prince", "The Unknown Dissident", and "Desire & The Contorter". Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1961. New Copy 2 CDs ... $19.99 29.99
Fantastic work from Thelonious Monk – a superbly-recorded live set from early 60s Paris – done with his legendary quartet with Charlie Rouse on tenor! The music here is wonderful – tracks that are often quite long, and stretched out nicely from the Columbia Records material by the group – with especially long improvisations by Monk that really reignite our respect for his genius – and the kind of soulful solos from Rouse that are always a perfect match! The bass of John Ore is beautifully recorded too – maybe even more powerful here than usual – and Frankie Dunlop completes the group with wonderfully deft work on drums. Titles include "Nutty", "Bemsha Swing", "Evidence", "Body & Soul", "I Mean You", "Epistrophy", "Just A Gigolo", "April In Paris", "Crepuscule With Nellie", "Jakie-ing", and "Off Minor". CD

✨✧ Thelonious MonkParis 1969 ... LP
Blue Note/Laser Swing, 1969. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
A lost treasure from the legendary Thelonious Monk – a live date recorded in Paris at the end of the 60s – late in Monk's life, and every bit as wonderful as his famous 60s studio work with his quartet! Of that group, only Charlie Rouse remains on tenor sax – but Rouse is more than enough to make things great, and the interplay between his tenor and Monk's piano is completely sublime – full of angular movements, underscored with plenty of soul – and given support from Nate Hygelund on bass and either Paris Wright or Philly Joe Jones on drums. There's a rough edge to the music that's really great – that sharper, more sinister vibe that Monk could have in a live setting – and titles include "Light Blue", "Bright Mississippi", "I Mean You", "Ruby My Dear", "I Love You Sweetheart Of All My Dreams", "Crepuscule With Nellie", and "Nutty". The Monkees had so many fantastic records during their short span of recording, nearly all of them might well be "greatest hits" – but this set does a nice job of slimming the selection down to focus on some of the most long-lasting tracks from the group! There's a few killer Boyce & Hart compositions, produced by the duo too – and the set also features contributions from other 60s pop heavyweights, like Chip Douglas, Neil Diamond, Jeff Barry, and the duo of Carole King & Gerry Goffin – all of whim give the foursome some great material, on tunes that include "Theme From The Monkees", "Last Train To Clarksville", "She", "Listen To The Band", "A Little Bit Me A Little Bit You", "Daydream Believer", "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "Steppin Stone", "I'm A Believer", and "I Wanna Be Free". Breathily beautiful work from singer Priscilla Paris – an unusual take on the music of Billie Holiday, done with a relatively sweet feel overall! Paris is definitely trying for Holiday's tone at times – but her sound is always a bit warmer and airier – almost as if Claudine Longet were doing a tribute to Billie, with a spacious late 60s feel that's almost A&M at times! Backings are by Sid Feller and Don Peake, and players on the date include Jimmy Rowles on piano, Jim Crutcher on bass, John Guerin on drums, and Peake on guitar – plus a bit of added strings. Charlie ParkerApril In Paris – Charlie Parker With Strings (Genius Of Charlie Parker #2) ... LP
Verve, Early 50s. Very Good+ ... $6.99
The genius of Bird and strings is hard to describe – an edgey aproach that really goes far past most other "jazz with strings" projects, not a ballad-driven one, but a tensely strained one that brings out some of Parker's best soloing, almost in a moody soundtrack-type way. The tracks are a lot freer and less bop-driven than some of Bird's normal work, and it's incredible to hear him soloing with such complexity – even more proof of the genius he clearly exhibited in relation to his contemporaries. Titles include "Just Friends", "Easy To Love", "East Of The Sun", "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "April In Paris", and "Summertime". LP, Vinyl record album

The tracks were recorded for French radio, at the Olympia Theater in the city – and the package features the famous trio with Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums! For fans of the important Thigpen years – which most folks know from the early 60s Verve Recordings – this extra material is a dream come true – especially as the set is from a time when the trio was in top form. Many tracks are quite long – in territory similar to the Live In Chicago recordings by the group – and titles include "Cubano Chant", "Whisper Not", "The Lamp Is Low", "Jet Song", "Tin Tin Deo", and "Yours Is My Heart Alone". Bud PowellBud Powell In Paris (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Reprise (Japan), 1964. Used ... $18.99
A surprising Bud Powell album for Reprise Records – and one of the label's hippest jazz titles ever! When Frank Sinatra first started up the Reprise imprint, he let Duke Ellington do a bit of A&R for the jazz division – and one of the first things Ellington did was capture the great Bud Powell in his then-local setting of Paris – in this rough edgey session that turned out to be one of Powell's last albums, and one of his best from the 60s. The record is nothing fancy on the outside – just simple piano trio versions of jazz standards like "Parisian Thoroughfare", "I Can't Get Started", "Jordu", and "Dear Old Stockholm" – but Powell's dark genius turns the tracks into jagged little razors, cutting with an emotional depth that's quite surprising. Duke Ellington produced – and trio members include Gilbert Rovere on bass and Carl Fields on drums. CD

A wonderful collection of Latin recordings from postwar France – all recorded by Cuban native Filiberto Rico, an artist who moved between Havana and Paris in the early part of his life – and seemed to leave quite a musical legacy in the process! Rico was part of seminal Cuban recordings of the 30s, and definitely has the chops to make his French recordings come across at a level that rivals the music taking place in his homeland at the end of the 40s – but there's also a nice current of American jump blues on some of these numbers too – which almost creates a jukebox mambo sort of vibe – as Latin percussion, rolling piano lines, and well-blown saxophone solos take off alongside the vocals! Singers here include Fermin Lorenzo Jova, Antonio Picallo, Emilio Aarmengol, Doris Marnier, and Carlos Petrel – and titles include "Somos Differentes", "Angelitos Negros", "Se Acabo", "Pajarito", "Tumba", "Tu Felicidad", "Dinorah", "Colibri", "Sabrosura", "La Ola Marina", and "La Television" 36 tracks in all! ✨✧ AirtoFree/Identity/Promises Of The Sun (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Arista/BGO (UK), 1972/1975/1976. New Copy 2 CDs ... $14.99
A trio of albums from percussionist Airto – with bonus tracks too! First up is Free – one of the coolest, grooviest albums you'll ever hear from the legendary percussionist Airto – a set that mixes his own Brazilian roots with the electric genius of 70s CTI – all with stunning results! Airto's in the lead – and blows some beautiful wood flute lines alongside percussion – but the album also features killer contributions from Joe Farrell on soprano sax, Hubert Laws on flute, Keith Jarrett on piano, and Chick Corea on Fender Rhodes – as well as a hip bit of vocals from Flora Purim as well! There's some added horns at parts – but the arrangements are relatively spare and subtle – so that most tracks have a core organic quality, very similar to Airto's work on Buddah/Cobblestone, but given a bit more of a CTI twist. Most tunes are quite long and free-flowing – and titles include "Lucky Southern", "Flora's Song", "Creek (Arroio)", and "Return To Forever". Identity is a soaring set of grooves from one of the world's greatest percussionists – a standout set as a leader from Airto, and a key set in his wonderful run of work from the 70s! The album's still got the loose, free feel of Airto's earliest work, and isn't nearly as crossover-oriented as some of the Flora Purim sets from the time – still strongly in a rootsy, earthy sort of vibe – and produced with a very respectful sound by Herbie Hancock. Herbie plays some Arp on the record, and Wayne Shorter brings in some soprano sax too – but the core elements of the album are Airto's range of percussion instruments, keyboards and piano from Egberto Gismonti, drums from Roberto, trombone from Raul DeSouza, and a bit of vocals from Flora. Titles include "Flora On My Mind", "Cafe", "The Magicians", "Tales From Home", "Identity", and "Encounter". Promises Of The Sun is a record that departs nicely from earlier work, yet still keeps all the best elements intact! Airto's percussion work is firmly at the core of the set – giving it a nice acoustic base to work from, while also adding in touches of electric guitar by Toninho Horta, bass by Novelli, and keyboards from Hugo Fattoruso. The groove is a wonderful blend of the acoustic and electric, organic and synthetic – and is often crafted in a majestic vibe that seems to be inspired by the work of Milton Nascimento from the early 70s. Tracks include "Circo Marimbondo", "Zuei", "Candango", "Ruas Do Recife", "Georgiana", and "La De Casa". CD features bonus tracks "Creek (alt version)", "So Tender", and "Jequie". CD

A landmark set of recordings cut for the Pacific Jazz label in the early 50s, and supposedly a major influence on the early bossa artists in Brazil! The tracks were cut by a quartet led by LA altoist Bud Shank, and featuring Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida, who was living in LA at the time. The mix of alto and guitar, in a jazzy vein, but with Latiny rhythms, is very similar to the early bossa jazz recordings – and even more so to the later American ones by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd. Supposedly, original 10" LPs of the material made their way to Brazil, and later influenced Jobim and Gilberto. Although we can't confirm that rumor entirely, you'll sure hear a similarity, and even if you don't, the stuff's still pretty darn great. Titles include "Terra Seca", "Amor Flamenco", "Atabaque", "Nono", "Noctambulism", "Tocata", and "Carinoso". This title is a full LP that reissues the original 10" sets – with 14 tracks in all! CD

Although later work by the trio was a fair bit more heady, the approach here is more focused psychedelic pop – done in styles that echo strongly with some of the late 60s styles coming out of the Parisian scene, which is where the group were working at the time. Lyrics, though, are sung mostly in English – which gives the record a bit of a Brit psychedelic feel – but there's some other elements here that are also strongly the group's own. A young Demi Roussos sings lead vocals and plays guitar, and new age maestro Vangelis plays organ and percussion with a sound that's quite different than any of his later work! Titles include "End Of The World", "Day Of The Fool", "Valley Of Sadness", "Rain & Tears", "Mister Thomas", "You Always Stand In My Way", and "The Shepherd & The Moon". LP, Vinyl record album
(50th Anniversary Edition – numbered limited edition of 1000 on gold colored vinyl!)

✨✧ Art Ensemble Of ChicagoSpiritual ... LP
Freedom/ORG, 1969/1972. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A tremendous recording from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – done during the same Paris stretch as their Great Black Music classics on the BYG/Actuel label – and a set that easily matches, if not tops, those classics! You can really hear the group finding their own space here – taking some of the free jazz explorations of the Chicago scene in the late 60s, and forging them with an even earthier use of both percussion, and the more offbeat sonic possibilities of their own instruments – often with a sense of surprise that you don't always get from some of their later albums. Titles include the side-long "The Spiritual" – plus "Toro", "Lori Song", and "That The Evening Sky Fell Through the Glass Wall and We Stood Alone Somewhere?" (And they wondered why they never got their songs on the radio!) LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram red vinyl pressing.)

Albert AylerMusic Is The Healing Force Of The Universe ... LP
Impulse, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $59.99
One of the last records made by avant sax legend Albert Ayler – a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original rainbow label stereo pressing. Cover has some corner wear and a 4 inch center split in the bottom seam.)

Azambuja & CiaAzambuja & Cia (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Far Out (Brazil), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99
A record with an unusual source, but a sound that puts it right up there with some of the most heavenly rare Brazilian albums of the 70s – served up here in a folksy, jazzy mix of acoustic and electric elements – all with help from heavyweights who include Victor Assis Brasil, Mauricio Einhorn, Durval Ferreira, and the Azymuth trio! The songs are based around creations by a Brazilian comedy duo, but they hardly sound anything like that at all – as they're easy-going, mellow-grooving, and have these vocals that flow beautifully amidst percussion, guitar, and keyboards! There are two monologue tracks in Portuguese – both with audience laughter – but all other tracks are sung, and delivered with some wonderful arrangements by Jose Roberto Bertrami and Jose Menezes. Titles include "Negra Brecho", "Ao Billilico", "Tema Do Azambuja", "A Turma", "Verde", "Maristela", and "O Poste Da Rua Jorge De Lima". LP, Vinyl record album

Marcel AzzolaMarcel Azzola 1951 to 1962 – Ses Compositions, Les Classiques Du Musette, Les Grandes Chansons, Virtuosite et Pages Immortelles, Les Standards Internationaux (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99 29.99
Marcel Azzola is a great French talent on the musette (aka accordion) – one who glides along with the best breezy modes of bigger postwar players like Gus Viseur or Jo Privat! The distinction of musette here is important – as this isn't the clunky instrument of the polka scene, nor the snoozy sound of Lawrence Welk – but instead that lively, spontaneous mode that instantly evokes the streets of Paris and the darker reaches of the left bank in the 50s – a scene that Marcel helped shape in his work with Jacques Brel, Juliette Greco, and others. The tunes here are all instrumentals – and include many original French numbers, plus a few standards – all with a vibe that's a lot hipper than the look of hte cover. 3CD set features 60 tracks in all, plus notes in French and English! Marcel Azzola & Danny DorizJazzola ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1999. New Copy ... $14.99 18.98
A sweet set of accordion and vibes – served up here by Parisian jazzmen Marcel Azzola and Danny Doriz – working in a tight quintet that also features piano from the legendary George Arvanitas! Unlike some other French projects of this nature, the set is jazz first, accordion second – not some slightly-jazzed takes on musette hits from Parisian past, but instead these tight little jazzy tunes that really have Azzola soaring nicely – thanks in part to some well-rounded rhythms inspired by Arvanitas on the keys. Doriz has a sharper tone on vibes than on some of his other records, too – and titles include "Walkin Shoes", "Psychedelic Sally", "Double Scotch", "Fanfreluche", "Taking A Chance On Love", "Lina's Blues", "Little Willie Leaps", and "Pich'Nette". Joan BaezJoan Baez (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Vanguard, 1960. Used ... $4.99
One of the most essential debut albums of the 60s folk revival, and the early 60s in general – the great first album from Joan Baez on the Vanguard label – a masterpiece of emotional interpretation and impeccable folk guitar playing! Joan Baez is arguably more legendary as a figure than she his as a musician, in that she was a leader in a movement, but the singer and musician is what makes the biggest impact on us, and here she is at her finest. She's accompanied by second guitarist Fred Hellerman on about half the songs, which include "Silver Dagger", "East Virginia", "House Of The Rising Sun", "All My Trials", "Wildwood Flower", "John Riley", "Little Moses", "Ek Preso Numero Nueve" and more. Derek BaileyDerek Bailey Solo Guitar Vol 1 (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Incus/Honest Jons (UK), 1972. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99
A seminal record in the world of free jazz – a set that not only helped document the incredible talents of guitarist Derek Bailey, but also proclaimed a whole new role for his instrument as well! The music here is completely different than any jazz guitar in previous years – and even though Bailey was a respectful student of other musicians, he's completely dismantling conventional use of the electric guitar here – opening the door not just for generations to come who would be inspired by his intricate work on the strings and equally strong use of the body of the instrument, but also for so many others who would create new sounds on the guitar in other fields of music too. Titles include "Improvisation 4", "Christiani Eddy", "Improvisation 6", "Where Is The Police", "Improvisation 7", and "The Squirrel & The Ricketty Racketty Bridge". 2LP set features all the additional improvisations that were recorded at the same time, and which appeared on the 1978 pressing of the record – plus a full side of a never-issued improvisation, recorded in York in 1972! Duck BakerSpinning Song – Duck Baker Plays The Music Of Herbie Nichols (180 gram red vinyl presing) ... LP
Avant/Triple Point, 1996. New Copy (reissue)... $38.99
Guitarist Duck Baker takes on the music of Herbie Nichols – the sometime-overlooked modernist of the postwar years, a player that some folks rank right up there with Thelonious Monk – later given his due with a run of revival projects like this! Nichols' music sounds very different here – less of the sharp percussive angles that a piano might create – and almost more warmly chromatic, through the acoustic guitar readings of the tunes by Baker – himself a very creative player, and really setting himself apart from some of his contemporaries with this project. The album's got equal appeal to both fans of Herbie's mid-century modernism, and the decades of creative acoustic guitar solo material that came before Baker's rise – work by John Fahey, Robbie Basho, and others. Titles include "117th Street", "Portrait Of Ucha", "House Party Starting", "Nick At T's", and "Spinning Song". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mickey BakerMickey Baker In The 50s – Hit, Git, & Split ... CD
Rev-Ola (UK), 1950s. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
A wealth of work from guitarist Mickey Baker in the 50s – tracks recorded under his own name, plus a whole bunch more that feature Mickey's trademark sound backing up other singers! Baker had a tone that was undeniable from the start – a way of playing the guitar that brought in plenty of grit, but still finished with a nice sense of polish – a blend that was a key link between earthier blues uses of the instrument, and some of the bolder sounds of rock and roll and R&B in the 50s. This 31 track set may well be the best exploration of Mickey's mighty talents we've seen so far – and it features tracks that include "Love Me Baby", "Bandstand Stomp", "Riverboat", "Shake Walkin", and "Rock With A Sock" cut under Mickey Baker's own name – plus "Hit Git & Split" by Young Jessie, "Pepper Head Woman" by Square Walton, "Stumbling Block" by Champion Jack Dupree, "Country Boy" by Tiny Kennedy, "My Baby's Gone" by Eddie Riff, "All Around The World" by Titus Turner, "Runaway" by Charles Calhoun Orchestra, and "I'm Tired" by Big Red McHouston Orchestra. Also includes "Love Is Strange" and "No Good Lover" by Mickey & Sylvia. CD

Impulse, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $4.99
Chapter 2 of Gato's Latin American trilogy – and like the first, a set of tracks that features Gato's firey sax work engaging a complex series of Latin rhythms. Some of the tracks on the record feature Brazilian influences – from players like Helio Delmiro and Novelli – and one other track was recorded in Buenos Aires, like the tunes on the first LP. The sound is soulful and spiritual throughout – and the presence of the additional players really opens up Gato's style. Titles include "Para Nosotros", "Encontros", "Latino America", and "Marissea". One of the grooviest Brigitte Bardot albums ever recorded – a stellar set of tracks with some ultra-chic arrangements from the great Alain Gouraguer! The album swings like the best of Paris pop in the 60s – tight and outta site, with loads of jaunty pop tunes that bring out the best in Brigitte's vocals, and show her to be a great singer when she gets the right material! Tracks include "Ca Pourrait Changer", "Une Histoire De Plage", "Ne Me Laisse Pas L'aimer", "Jamais Trois Sans Quatre", "Maria Ninguem", "Moi Je Joue", "Je Danse Donc Je Suis", "Melanie", "Ciel De Lit" and "C'est Un Jour Comme Un Autre". ✨✧ John BarryLast Valley ... LP
ABC, 1971. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Quite a shift for John Barry – not the usual groovy music you might expect, and instead a somewhat serious score written for this historical epic written and directed by James Clavell, starring Omar Sharif and Michael Caine! The sound is still wonderful, though – proof that Barry was right at home in a variety of different soundtrack settings – and keenly in command of a cinematic musical vision. A number of the tracks have a vocal chorus, chanting in a moody, slightly militaristic way – and most of the numbers are driving and dramatic, but in ways that are quite different from Barry's better-known action work. Titles include "The Shrine", "Evening Song", "Plague Pit", "Attack At Rheinfelden", "The Last Valley", and "Death Of The Captain". LP, Vinyl record album

Fontella BassFree ... LP
Paula, 1972. Near Mint- ... $39.99
Very righteous work from Fontella Bass – an album done after her time at Chess Records, and after her work in Paris with the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – in a heartfelt, southern soul mode that's totally great! Fontella's back working with producer Oliver Sain, who first brought her fame back in the 60s – but the sound is a bit more sophisticated than before, drenched with roots from gospel and country soul, but also inflected with some of the more righteous modes of the early 70s too. Fontella's vocals are incredible – with a range that should have made her one of the leading ladies of soul in the 70s – and titles include "To Be Free", "I Need Love", "Wiping Tears", "Hold On this Time", "Talking About Freedom", and "My God My Freedom My Home". An early classic from John Beltran – filled with the kinds of careful touches and deeper energy that instantly set him apart from the pack! At a time when few folks were going for higher ideas, Beltran was right out there bringing a new sense of spirit to club music – almost echoing earlier spiritual styles, but never in a straight jazz way – and also never afraid to allow some gentler, more personal moments in his music too. The tunes have a solid quality that still holds up wonderfully over the years – and tracks include "Venim & Wonder", "Gutaris Breeze", "Collage Of Dreams", "Flex", "Ten Days Of Blue", "Soft Summer", and "Deluge". Danny Ben-IsraelKathmandu Sessions ... LP
Locust/Anazitisi (Greece), Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Here's some pretty awesome late 60s psychedelic freakout gems from a cat we'd never heard of before – Israeli citizen Danny Ben-Israel – who only ever recorded a couple of albums worth of material! One of those albums, Chantarish 3 1/4 (also known as Bullshit 3 1/4) was recorded in his native Hebrew, and was soon as much as banned in Israel, so Ben-Israel then packed up his English language recordings from the same Tel-Aviv sessions and headed to the US. The massive, free-spiraling tunes that comprise the first 3 tracks on this CD issue combine the kind of way out space trip electric guitar that Hendrix played live but never recorded, and stable bass, drums and Eastern-tinged keyboards that keep it all rock and roll – no matter how out there Danny's wailing vocals and lyrics go. The remaining tracks feature Danny alone on all the instrumentation (bass, guitar, whistle, violin, keyboards and other odd sounds.) Tracks include "Kathmandu", "Bad Trip", "Do You Believe In Fairy Tales?", "Seagulls", "Can't Stand You" and the great closer "The Hippies Of Today Are The Assholes Of Tomorrow" – which is not only one of the most deadpan satires we've ever heard from the psychedelic era, but it also contains just about as much incisive, prescient truthisms as any Dylan tome from late 60s! LP, Vinyl record album
