Tom Jobim, Vinicius De Moraes, & OthersGarota De Ipanema ... CD
Universal (Japan), 1967. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
A stunning lost bossa nova soundtrack! The score was penned for the 1967 film Garota De Ipanema (Girl From Ipanema), and although you've heard some of the tracks before in other versions, the overall album is very nice – and is a wonderful tribute to the early days of bossa nova! Jobim and Vinicius perform, as well as Baden Powell, Tamba Trio, Nara Leao, Elis Regina, Ronnie Von, Chico Buarque, and Quarteto Em Cy – and titles include "Por Voce", "Chorino", "Aria Para Se Morrer De Amor", "Rancho Das Namoradas", and "Tema Da Desilusao". We think some of the material might have popped up on otheralbums from time to time, but there's still enough stuff here that we hadn't heard elsewhere – and that we like a lot! CD

✨✧ Marc Moulin/PlaceboPlacebo Years – 1971 to 1974 (180 gram turquoise vinyl pressing) ... LP
EMI/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the heaviest keyboard funk recorded in Europe during the early 70s – all the work of the jazz/rock combo Placebo, headed up by the legendary Marc Moulin! The tracks here are awash in Fender Rhodes and other keys – all supported by tight basslines, funky drums, and a fair bit of jazzy riffing on sax, trumpet, and flute. But the main groove always focuses around the keyboards – recorded with a spare, almost earthy quality that's a fair bit greater than some of the slicker keys that crept into the European scene a few years later. Moulin's really at the top of his game here – working in a groove that could easily rival Herbie Hancock or Bob James in the US – and unlike his Sam Suffy set, of similar vintage, this collection's all straight ahead jazz funk, with hardly a bit of experimentation! Tracks are from the albums Ball Of Eyes, 1973, and Placebo – and the set list here differs from the earlier Counterpoint collection with a similar name. 9 tracks in all – including "NW", "Balek", "SUS", "Aria", "Stomp", "Red Net", "Showbizz Suite", "Polk", and "Humpty Dumpty". ✨✧ Placebo (Marc Moulin)Ball Of Eyes (180 gram pressing) ... LP
EMI/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very cool little album from Placebo – arguably the group's most soulful session ever, and one that draws heavily from American funky jazz at the start of the 70s! The grooves are nice and tight, and keyboards are focused on the most soulful sort of riffs – not nearly as tripped out as in later years, and really doing a great job of sending home the funky rhythms – almost in a way that's sort of early CTI at the best points! Marc Moulin's genius is already firmly in place – and he handles all arrangements, plus plays Fender Rhodes, electric harpsichord, and even what sounds like a bit of moog! Titles include "Humpty Dumpty", "Aria", "Showbiz Suite", "Ball Of Eyes", "You Got Me Hummin", and "Inner City Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Max RichterSleep (8CD & Blu Ray set) ... CD
Deutsche Grammophon (Germany), 2016. Used 8 CDs + DVD ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful sounds from Max Richter – doing plenty to evoke the quality of its title, but all without ever sounding sleepy at all! Instead, Richter works here with that careful blend of subtle sounds he's brought to other projects – mixing his own work on piano, organ, and keyboards with contributions from a string quartet and wordless soprano – as the blend of instruments and voice unfold at a level that almost reminds us of the pairing of Ennio Morricone and Edda Dell'Orso! Yet Richter's approach is less dramatic – and each new passage builds slowly, subtly – sometimes with these older echoes that almost take us back to Albioni or Pachelbel, yet without any hoke at all. Sounds from the project were distilled into the lovely, hour-long From Sleep record, but this is the full 8 hour experience – same as full night's rest – but even dreamier as a conscious experience! Titles include "Dream 1 (Before The Wind Blows It All Away)","Cumulonimbus", "Aria 1", "Nor Earth, Nor Boundless Sea", "Moth-Like Stars", "Patterns (Lux)", "Space 2 (Slow Waves)", "Never Fade Into Nothingness", "If You Came This Way", "Sublunar", "If You Came This Way", "Non-Eternal", "Path 17 (Before The End Of The Daylight)" and many more. Salut/BBE (UK), 1985. New Copy (reissue)... $39.99 42.99
A set of work from Lebanese composer Ihsan Al-Munzer, who you might know from his work with various vocalists – but a record that's all-instrumental, and which almost has the feel of an 80s sound library set overall! Tracks are heavy on keyboards – used in varying ways from cut to cut, but often with a soundtrack-like quality – as if Ihsan was scoring the backgrounds for some cop/crime thriller that was set in Beirut! Other instrumentation is part of the mix too – lean use of drums, bass, and guitar mostly, although sometimes filled up with larger orchestrations – on titles that include "Streets Of Beirut", "Dindolo", "Girl Friend", "Gipsy Nights", "Theme From The Film Almankhtouf", and "Sonatina For Maria". Mariana AydarCavaleiro Selvagem Aqui Te Sigo ... CD
Universal (Brazil), 2011. Used ... $6.99
Mariana Aydar's really blowing our mind since the last time we heard her on record – stepping forth here with her deepest, most complex material ever – an album as rich in sounds and styles as some of our favorite Brazilian material from the 70s! There's this confidence to the presentation that's completely genre-transcendent – that feel of making new musical space we loved in the Tropicalia era, and the MPB generation of the 70s – a mode that few other Brazilian singers, especially female ones, can match this well these days. The record speaks volumes on its own – so much so that we'd be daft to try to pin it down with just a few words – but we can definitely say that once you hang on for the ride, Mariana got plenty of places to take you through the course of the set. Titles include a great remake of "Nine Out Of Ten", plus "Galope Rasante", "Floresta", "A Saga Do Cavaleiro", "Solitude", "Vinheta Da Alegria", "Cavaleiro Selvagem", and "Porto". CD

Maria Bethania25 Anos ... CD
Universal (Japan), 1990. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
A beautiful tribute to 25 years in Brazilian music by Maria Bethania – and a record that's easily one of her greatest efforts from later years! The album's something of an all-star effort – with guest vocals from Nina Simone, Joao Gilberto, Gal Costa, and others – and tremendous instrumentation from Wagner Tiso, Hermeto Pascoal, Jaime Alem, Sivuca, and Jose Roberto Bertrami – all of whom help to give the record a sense of majesty that matches Bethania's tremendous vocals. There's none of the overwrought "tour de force" quality going on here – and instead, the guests all make relatively restrained contributions – always letting Maria keep center stage, in a way that shows their support simply, and subtly. Titles include "Quase", "Maria/Linda Flor", "Tomara", "Flor De Lr Embora", "Awo/Inhansa", "Palavra/Apesar De Voce", "Tocando Em Frendte", and "Logrador". CD

✨✧ Maria BethaniaA Tua Presenca ... LP
Philips/Universal (Brazil), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $54.99 79.99
Wonderful early work from Maria Bethania – an album that's put together with a very sophisticated sound, and a really powerful feel overall! The orchestrations are relatively baroque – sometimes using strings in odd ways, other times bringing in bits of voices – all very much in keeping with the genius that was brewing at the time in albums by Gal Costa or Nara Leao. And oddly, the backings for the album are not credited at all – save possibly to Manoel Barenbein, who's listed as the director of the production – and we're guessing that Maria had a good deal to do with the overall sound of the set, not just the vocals! Titles include a wonderful groover called "Mano Caetano", done as a duet with Jorge Ben, and very much in Ben's best style from the time – and other tracks include "Janelas Abertas No 2", "Jesus Cristo", "Que Me Dera", "Folha Morta", "Mariana, Mariana", and "A Tua Presenca Morena". Maria BethaniaAlibi ... CD
Universal (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
Strong work by Maria Bethania from the late 70s – a session that has her tightening up her sound a bit more than before, but without any loss of her sense of drama or emotion! The album was recorded with a number of different musical backgrounds, including many small group settings with guitar by Rosinha De Valenca – an artist we love on her own, and who adds in a nicely personal touch to this album's mix of strings, keyboards, and rootsier percussion. The guitar works nicely with Maria's voice, and is perhaps second in the mix behind her singing – giving the songs a nice focus even when the backings are quite large. Songs are a mix of tunes by Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, and other likely suspects – and titles include "Calice", "Interior", "De Todas As Maneiras", "O Meu Amor", "Ronda", and "Diamante Verdadeiro". Universal (Japan), 1993. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
A set of compositions penned by Roberto and Erasmo Carlos – sung by Maria Bethania in a warmly personal setting! The style here gets away from any of the too-romantic qualities that can sometimes mar presentation of the Carlos' brothers work – and instead, Bethania uses her innate sense of power and drama to give these tunes a subtle edge they might not have in the hands of other singers. Backings are sometimes full, but also in a subtle way – using strings slightly to flesh out other instrumentation that's more prominent in the mix. Titles include "Olha", "Detalhes", "Voce Nao Sabe", "Emocoes", "Seu Corpo", "Fera Ferida", "Palavras", and "Costumes". CD

Universal (Japan), 1989. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
One of Maria Bethania's great collaborations with arranger Jaime Alem – an artist we loved as part of the team of Jaime & Nair back in the 70s, and who's really helping Bethania find some deeper space here in the middle years of her career! At a time when Maria had moved into some of the warmer, more electric modes of her contemporaries, Alem helped her regain the sense of power heard in her classic 70s work – but at a level that was quite different than on those records, with a more restrained sensibility overall – making some especially great use of the aging qualities of her voice. Titles include "Junho", "Confesso", "Tenha Calma", "Reconvexo", "Memoria Da Pele", "Salve As Folhas", "Guerra No Mar", and "Vinganca". CD

Luiz Bonfa & Maria ToledoBraziliana ... CD
Philips/Universal (Japan), 1965. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
Very groovy bossa tracks – very much in the mode of some of the Verve hit recordings of the mid 60s! After the success of the Astrud Gilberto/Joao Gilberto work with Stan Getz, it's clear that Philips and Luiz Bonfa wanted to get in on the act – and they've paired Bonfa's guitar with vocals from his wife Maria Toledo – a really wonderful singer with very Astrud-like appeal! The album's got some larger backings from Bobby Scott, who brings in a nice undercurrent of jazz – and while some of Bonfa's other work of the time is somewhat spare and dreamy, the style is nicely full here. Toledo sings in both English and Portuguese, and even scats wordlessly a bit – which we really like – on titles that include "Sambura", "Whistle Samba", "Tanto Amor", "Boticario", "Promessa", and "Sugar Loaf". John Cage with David TudorVariations IV – Volume II ... LP
Everest, 1965. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A very cool album that presents Cage at the height of his "chance" composition stage, and which features him and David Tudor playing a mixed bag of sounds on a sound system, recorded live at the Feigen-Palmer Gallery in LA. The work is the kind of stuff you always hear about with Cage, but can't find that easily on record. The album's a haunting melange of random sounds – from radio noise, to gamelon recordings, to sound effects – and it's striking proof of how fresh these ideas still are, even if they've been reduced to drivel by countless "experimental" post-rock bands. This edition says "Volume II", which we assume to be a second part of the original issue – but we're not sure. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Vinicius CantuariaHorse & Fish ... CD
Bar None, 2004. Used ... $8.99
A beautiful beautiful album from Vinicius Cantuaria – one of the few Brazilian artists who seems to get better and better with age! The record's got a moody, stripped-down feel that reminds us of the most intimate work by Caetano Veloso from earlier years – gently jazzy, with clear inspiration from the bossa, but also a keen vision that helps Cantuaria define a sound that's far different than any of the bossa-revival albums on the market. Although spare and simple, the album's got a deeply personal feel – never too heady or overly intellectual, but also still clearly conscious of its own direction at all times. Great stuff throughout, and the kind of record that's got us paying more attention to Vinicius these days! Titles include "Toky", "Look To The Sky", "Procissao", "Quase Choro", "Cubanos Postizos", and "O Nome Dela". CD

The best of Brazil, old and new – as Joao Gilberto meets up with a younger generation of Brazilian vocalists – Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Maria Bethania – all for a wonderful session of stripped-down bossa! The work is very much in Joao's best style of the early 70s – a back to basics return, handled with even more intimacy than before – with production by Gilberto, and some beautifully understated arrangements from Johnny Mandel! Tracks are all nice and long, and allow for lots of vocal interplay between the four singers on the set. Titles include "Cordeiro De Nana", "Aquarela Do Brasil", "Milagre", and "Bahia Com H". CD

2 pivotal works in the career of Pierre Henry! Variations Pour Une Porte Et Un Soupir is beautiful batch of spare electronics – translated as "Variations Between A Door & A Sigh" – the piece is exactly that! One track will evoke strange creaking door sounds, the next will have a breathy, sigh-like quality – and then the whole thing starts all over again. Maddening, but wonderful in its own way! After that, the CD moves into La Reine Verte – composed for a show with Maurice Bejart, and a continuous electronic work that's filled with slowly progressing analogue bubbles, almost in a 60s sci fi sort of way, but a bit freer and looser, and pretty darn scary! A pivotal album in the careers of Edu Lobo and Maria Bethania – united in a series of unique duets for this classic Elenco session from 1966! The album pre-dates most of Bethania's other work, and is done in a style that's got all the best touches of Lobo's baroque post-bossa arranging style – but with an overall sound that's a bit more stripped-down and rootsy. Edu and Maria duet on about half the tracks, trading vocals back and forth over some incredibly beautiful arrangements – and the remaining tracks feature each artist singing solo. The whole thing's amazing, and titles include great versions of "Upa Neguinho", "Lua Nova", "Candeias", "Veleiro", "So Me Fez Bem", "O Tempo E O Rio", and "Boranda". CD

A really weird little record, and one that maybe gives away part of its approach with its cover – an abstracted version of sounds that are supposed to be more natural and organic, but which are very electronic and pulled far from any sort of instrumental referent! The music is almost a bridge between earlier electro-acoustic experiments and some of the moodier British recordings of this type from the following decade – very different than some of the straighter Italian sound library material, and years ahead of its time! Titles include "Odio Di Classe", "La Guerra E'Vicina", "Rassegnazione Del Terzo Mondo", "Schiavitu Millenaria", "Tensione Fra I Popoli", "Sfruttamento Industriale", and "Villaggio Indigeno". An amazing sonic portrait of the modern city – one created on the early 70s Italian scene, but lost to the shifting sands of time, due to its release as a sound library-only album! We've heard Maria Teresa Luciani on a few other records of this nature – but this one may well be her greatest – music that's beyond categorization in the way it presents its subject – not really jazz or soundtrack styles at all, but also not some sort of too-modern compositional idiom either. Instead, the whole thing seems to make some sort of honest, organic sense – as it presents differing aspects of the city, both residential and commercial, public and private – often with a sense of darkness in the immediate approach, but also with a current of hope at times too. Titles include "Public Gardens", "Modern Residential Complex", "Supermarket", "Poor Neighborhoods", "Power Station", "Traffic", and "International Airport". LP, Vinyl record album

Incredible work from Tania Maria – recorded in France right before her departure for bigger fame in the US! The set's got a fully jazzy feel that we really really love – one that has Tania's fluid vocals and soulful piano alongside backings that are expanded past her usual trio – with trumpet, tenor, flute, and cello fleshing out the sound, range, and emotion of the tunes. And while the album has a mellow feel overall, there's a gentle grace that sweeps the whole thing up in a mature interpretation of the bossa idiom – a mode that really sets the stage for some of Maria's later work on Concord, but which is done here with a sense of personal poetry that we really treasure. Titles include "Passarella", "Retrato Em Branco E Preto", "Para Chick", "Tatiana", "Rua 17B", "Ze", and "Pecados Meus". CD

Odeon/EMI (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
Fantastic early work from Tania Maria! This record is one of her first – and it's a beautiful batch of bossa and jazzy tracks, with larger orchestrations by Geraldo Vespar, and lots of nice organ and keyboard work. Maria's voice is very nice, and without the polish of later recordings – and with a deeply soulful quality that provides a nice counterpoint to the jazzy instrumentation of the set. The tracks groove very, very nicely! Titles include "Bobeou, Nao Vai Entender", "Madalena", "Ai! Que Saudades De Amelia", "De Frente", "Hey Voce", and "Carinhoso". CD

Tania MariaTania Maria Live ... LP
Accord (France), 1978. Very Good+ ... $14.99
In the years before she came to America, and turned into a slickly-produced Brazilian fusion diva, Tania Maria was living in France, and recording some great material with a much more stripped-down feel than her later recordings. This great album from the late 70s features a very nice batch of live material, recorded in Cophenhagen, with some great long tracks that have a fast bossa style and Tania's jazzy breezy vocals firmly in place. The album's tough to find on this side of the Atlantic – and includes the cuts "Mr. & Mrs.", "Carona", "O Que E Amar", and "Pingas Da Vida". LP, Vinyl record album

A lost bossa organ classic – and one that features some vocals by Jorge Ben! The album's a rare gem from early 60s Brazil, and features Ben singing in the same soulful style as on his own early records – dancing lightly over grooves set down by organist Ze Maria, who has a wonderful sound that's a lot like Walter Wanderley! The whole thing's a dream, and features early versions of Ben's own tracks "Mas Que Nada" and "Por Causa De Voce Menina" – plus the tracks "A Vida Do Negro", "Influencia Do Jazz", "Tudo Azul", and "Samba Do Aviao". Charlie MarianoCharlie Mariano ... LP
Bethlehem, 1955. Very Good+ ... $24.99
Insanely wonderful early work from Charlie Mariano – some of the freshest, cleanest alto sax work of its time – blown with a tone and sense of soul that goes way beyond some of Mariano's contemporaries at the time! The album was recorded for Bethlehem Records, and is relatively straight – but Charlie already shows a sense of complexity in his presentation that hints at all the greatness to come – and which bursts out here with some refreshing energy that really makes the whole thing sparkle. Charlie's tone is impeccable – somewhere between Lee Konitz and Charlie Parker, with that back bay Boston blend of soul and modernism, making the city one of the best scenes for alto players in the 50s – and he gets some strong rhythm support from the trio of John Williams on piano, Max Bennett on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums. Titles include "Blues", "Floormat", "I Heard You Cried Last Night", "Johnny One Note", and "King For A Day". LP, Vinyl record album

A seminal electric session from Charlie Mariano – one recorded after his shift from bop-based work into trippier, more psychedelic influences – and one of his few American dates from the time! The record has Charlie working on soprano and alto sax, with a group that includes Pat Rebillot on electric piano and organ, Tony Levine on bass, and David Spinozza on guitar – all grooving along with the reeds in a stretched-out, tripped-out kind of way – a mixture of jazz and some Eastern influences, but always held together nicely – without some of the overindulgence of some other Mariano records from the period. Charlie's solos are still icy as ever, but much freer than on his classic work, and with definite post-Coltrane influences – and titles include "Madras", "Himalaya", "Vasi Bindu", and "Mirror", which has vocals by Asha Puthli! Detto MarianoDelitto Al Ristorante Cinese ... LP
GDM/Musica Per Immagini (Italy), 1981. New Copy ... $36.99
A surprisingly nice score, done for a relatively goofy Italian comedy at the start of the 80s – set inside a Chinese restaurant in Rome, and handled with some definite Eastern touches in the instrumentation – but all mixed up in funky cop show sort of backings – almost an early 80s take on territory explored by Lalo Schifrin in Enter The Dragon! Obviously, the elements are a bit inauthentic – but given that the film's a comedy, we'll give them a pass – and note that they make a nice change from some of the more standard modes of Italian films like this of the time. The instrumentation's more 70s than you'd expect from the date of the film – and is usually somewhat warm, even when electric – and the set features a total of nine tracks from the movie – appearing here on vinyl for the first time ever. Brad Mehldau & Orpheus Chamber OrchestraVariations On A Melancholy Theme ... CD
Nonesuch, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
A really lovely little record from pianist Brad Mehldau – quite different than most of his albums, in that the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra is on board to help expand Mehldau's ideas in his music! The statement of the title is an apt one for the set – as it offers up variations on a blue-tinged melody. Yet the execution of the project is so much more than that – as the use of strings and woodwinds really open things up alongside Brad's piano – with a style that's more spacious and instrumentally distinct, and which strikingly puts Mehldau in an Americanist legacy that stretches back to the work of Aaron Copland and George Gershwin. There's definitely a larger Copland vision going on here – something that's a wonderful change after Brad's previous record, cut during the pandemic – almost as if Mehldau and the ensemble are helping to open things back up with their music. The record features 11 core variations, plus the initial "Theme", and some added passages as well. CD

MF DoomOperation Doomsday (variant cover) ... LP
Metal Face, 1999. New Copy (reissue)... About June 1, 2021 (delayed)
The first full length from MF Doom –setting the standard for underground hip hop to come! On this modern classic, Doom caps off the 90s with more jazzy soul in the beats, and some semblance of straightforward, if busy rhyme mastery from Doom & his guests – taken to the outer limits! What really pushes this one into legendary status are how well he works with creaky comic adventure samples, and it's the genesis of Doom's metal face supervillain persona. Looking back, it's clearly the building blocks for deeper insanity to come, but this one has a sound structure. Probably his best album. Includes "Doomsday", "Rhymes Like Dimes" feat Cucumber Slice, "The Finest" feat Tommy Gun, "Go With The Flow", "Tick Tick", "Hey!", "The Mic", "Dead Bent", "?" feat Kurious and much more – including all of the classic skits (yeah, we said it. . .classic skits, creative sci fi sample genius that are creative as the proper tracks) – with 19 tracks in all. Recorded in Buenos Aires, but a strong set of Brazilian tunes by these three greats! Singer Maria Crueza was at her best during the early 70s – and working here with the classic bossa team of poet Vinicius De Moraes and guitarist Toquinho, she really sparkles with a sound that's some of her best singing on record. The trio sing separately or together from track to track – and the set includes a lot of great work that's in the Black Orpheus or Afro Sambas mode. Titles include "Canto De Osshana", "A Felicidade", "Tomara", "Minha Namorada", "Valsa Da Tunisia", "Lamento No Morro", and a great version of Caetano Veloso's "Irene"! LP, Vinyl record album

Geoff & Maria MuldaurPottery Pie ... CD
Warner/Hannibal, 1969. Used ... $16.99
The duo of Geoff and Maria Muldaur – caught here at a perfect point in their career – and sounding especially nice with some great production from the legendary Joe Boyd! The album's got a more contemporary vibe than the early jug band material from Geoff – but it's also not in the smoother territory of Maria's later solo sides – and instead has this great blend of early 20th century musical elements with a hipper late 60s aesthetic – put together in ways that are never forced or hokey at all! In fact, the set may well be one of the best mergers of these modes from the Warner scene at the time – and the music is given a slight country current from the lead guitar of Amos Garrett, and pedal steel of Bill Keith. Titles include "Prairie Lullabye", "Trials Troubles Tribulations", "New Orleans Hopscop Blues", "Catch It", "Death Letter Blues", and "Brazil". CD

OsunladeAquarian Moon ... CD
Yoruba/BBE (UK), 2006. Used ... $5.99
The most ambitious recording to date from Osunlade – a bold step forward that raises him from the dancefloor into much headier territory! The work is a flurry of percussion, strings, keyboards, and countless other instruments – all layered together beautifully in a rich tapestry of sound and soul that still retains the best rhythmic elements of Osunlade's earlier singles, but also pushes the music into near-symphonic proportions. Consider the record to be the delivery of the promise always made by Osunlade's excellent singles for Yoruba – the first "big picture" record we've really heard from him, and proof that he's way more than just another dancefloor musician! Wonderful all the way through – with tracks that include "Oia In Winter", "Circles", "Aquarian Moon", "Thira", "The Day We Met For Coffee", "Flow", "Two Phish", "Fingerblood", "Music For The Gods", and "Inspiration". Late Mongo – but great Mongo! The CD features work recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1980 – a wonderful jazz-based performance that was never issued at the time! Tracks are long and very open – stretching out with a soulful majesty that goes beyond even Mongo's excellent jazz sides for the Vaya label at the end of the 70s. Milton Hamilton plays some great electric piano on the tracks – and the tunes also have some excellent work on soprano sax, tenor, and flute by Doug Harris, a player we know little about, but who we really love on this set! Dizzy Gillespie and Toots Thielemans join in on one track, but the core group is the real power of the the album – grooving hard in a mix of jazz, Latin, and a slight bit of funk – served up on long tracks that include "Para Ti", "Come Candela", "Sofrito", "Pajaro Cantor", "Havana", and "Amanecer". A seminal moment in the career of Mongo Santamaria – and probably the first record to show that he was destined for greatness! As you might guess from the title, the set features Mongo's key recording of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" – served up here in a sharp-edged Latin jazz version that pushed the tune into a whole new audience, and which was one of the first big groovers of its type in the pre-Latin Soul years! The group here is totally great – with players that include funky flautist Mauricio Smith, baritone genius Pat Patrick, and the always-great Bobby Capers – all key players who illustrate Santamaria's genius for picking horn players. A really lovely little live set from Caetano Veloso – spare, acoustic material, done in collaboration with Maria Gadu – a singer who really does a great job of matching Veloso's energy! There's a definite bossa inspiration to the material, but the set also has echoes of some of Caetano's spare acoustic sides from the 70s and 80s too – rootsy, but still complicated too – with the kind of up-close and personal feeling we love from those moments, echoed nicely by Maria – who sometimes sings in duet, sometimes a bit solo. Sadao Watanabe & Charlie MarianoNabesada & Charlie (Japanese pressing) ... LP
Victor (Japan), Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $39.99
A rare look at a little-known chapter in the career of Charlie Mariano – recordings made while living in Japan in the late 60s, done in the company of up-and-coming Japanese reedman Sadao Watanabe! The pair seem perfectly matched here – no surprise, given that both players are ones that come from a mainstream background, but who can also bring in earthier, more primal tones to their instruments. And while the tracks in the set are mostly familiar 60s standards and soul jazz tunes, the interplay between the reeds is really tremendous – dipping, turning, and carving out notes with sharp edges and unusual turns that take the record way past the obvious. Many of the tunes have a bossa groove at the base – in keeping with Watanabe's Brazilian-influenced sound of the era – but the presence of Mariano makes the record sound a fair bit different as well! Titles include "One Note Samba", "Work Song", "Goin Home", "On The Trail", "Comin' Home Baby", "Black Orpheus", and "Lord Don't Let Them Drop that Atomic Bomb On Me". A landmark in Japanese jazz – issued here in the US pressing from the late 70s. LP, Vinyl record album

An excellent album by one of the greatest Brazilian funk bands ever – a wonderful blend of funk, jazz, and soul – and a set that rivals any of the best work coming from the US at the time! These guys are right on the money right from the start – moving through sharp changes with effortless ease, yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial – kind of like that perfect balance that Kool & The Gang hit for just a few records in the mid 70s – but with more of a Brazilian feel overall. Jazzy licks abound – and the keyboards, guitar, and horns are just great – but the set's also got some more regional percussion, too – which really rounds out the record wonderfully. The grooves all have a really universal appeal – essential for any fan of funky sounds – and titles include "Mr Funky Samba", "Junia", "Casa Forte", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Lelbon Via Vaz Lobo", "Baia", "Maria Fumaca", and "Metalurgia". RCA/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic bit of funky fusion from Brazil – one of the most hard-hitting albums we've ever heard from keyboardist Cesar Mariano! Mariano had a long legacy in music that included great arrangements for Elis Regina – but this set is completely different than most of his other work – almost in a CTI Records sort of vein, as if Mariano were trying to follow the mode of his contemporary Deodato – but with a stronger current of Brazilian jazz, especially all of the complexity that was coming into that music at the time. Most of the instrumentation is electric – with a great mix of guitars, bass, and keyboards – but there's also nice use of acoustic bass and piano – for a groove that's both funky, but also touched with strong elements of Brazilian jazz. Titles include the cool funky track "Metropole", the break cut "Fabrica", and the mellow groover "Imigrantes" – as well as the tunes "Metro", "Litoral", and "Futebol De Bar". CD

Quite an interesting project from reedman Charlie Mariano – a record that shows that his search for new creative settings never ends! As you'd guess from the title, there's a bit of a tango inspiration to the record, but in a format that's very different than most tango jazz – as the album features Charlie on alto and flute, in duets with Quique Sinesi, who plays a variety of acoustic guitars, including 7 string Spanish, charango, and piccolo guitar. This spare sound is quite different than regular tango modes – and the spareness allows Mariano to solo freely – in that wonderful range of tones that's always made his work surprisingly soulful, no matter what the setting.
