Raul GomezRaul Gomez – Instrumental ... CD
Areito/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
A really sweet set of instrumental grooves – originally issued on the famous Cuban label Areito, but with a sound that's very different than you might expect! The music is funky and soulful, but also has these lush orchestrations too – so that the tunes are partly Latin, but also partly in a mode that echoes both the soulful side of 70s soundtracks, and some of the larger arrangements of American soul maestros like Barry White or Gene Page! The instrumentation shifts nicely throughout the set, and there's lots of surprises along the way – electric sitar on one cut, wordless vocals on another, and all sorts of very cool and groovy touches. Titles include "Dacapo", "Marinero Quiero Ser", "Mi Samba Carnaval", "6 Son", "Poema En La Playa", "Un Paseo A La Playa", and "Tema De La Sierra". CD

IrakereTeatro Amadeo Roldan Recital ... CD
Areito/Mr Bongo (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
A fantastic blend of funk, jazz, and Cuban rhythms – served up by the youthful Irakere, working here at the height of their powers! There's a sense of boundless energy throughout the entire record – an effort to try on so many things at once, and somehow get them all really right – from the complicated piano passages of Chucho Valdes, to the slight use of electricity on the fuzzy guitars or keyboards, to the soaring horns that really show some great sparkle from the young Paquito D'Rivera! Tunes are short, but almost have the full drive of much longer descarga numbers – and titles include "Valle Picadura", "Bacalao Con Pan", "Danza De Los Nanigos", "Quindiambo", and "Misaluba". CD

Juan Pablo TorresAlgo Nuevo ... CD
Areito/Mr Bongo (UK), 1978. New Copy ... $11.99
Totally groovy 70s work from Juan Pablo Torres – the legendary Latin trombonist who's known for years of great recordings, but who maybe still sounds his best on early albums like this from the Cuban scene! There's plenty of funk in the mix – thanks to electric bass, guitar, and other modern 70s elements – but Juan Pablo mixes these with richer acoustic elements, including percussion and occasional more traditional instruments – all of which create this great palette of sounds underneath his bold, soulful work on trombone! The style is very revolutionary, but hardly got much circulation on the US scene at the time, thanks to our closed door with Cuban culture – and the whole record's a treasure, with great cuts that include "Pan Caliente", "Guajira 2001", "Cacao", "Tatagua", "Rumba De Cajon Op 1", "Mangle", and "Asi Son Con El Son". Areito/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
A late 70s groover from Cuban trombonist Juan Pablo Torres – a wild mix of Latin, funk, soul, and jazz – a style that's quite unique, and which has made Torres' albums some of the most sought-after Havana grooves of the time! Drums snap hard on some of the best numbers – alongside tight horns, rootsy percussion, and some great keyboards too – and overall, there's a nice edge in the production, without some of the strings heard on some of Juan's other albums. Titles include "Y Que Bien", "Rico Melao", "Pastel En Descarga", "A Luna Llena", "Super Son", "Son Riendo", and "Son A Propulsion". CD

✨✧ IrakereGrupo Irakere ... CD
Areito/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent batch of funky Latin tunes from Irakere – and one of the group's best albums! It's got a mix of rolling bass and electric keyboards on the best cuts – sounding a lot like the funky sound of LA Latin groups like War or El Chicano, but with more of the Afro-Cuban groove of their homeland of Havana in the mix. The quality of the work is excellent – better than on any of the group's American releases in later years – and this one time Cuban-only release is the kind of gem that's was unjustly hard to track down in earlier years – all the while deserving of worldwide love! Titles include "Iya", "Moja El Pan", "Juana 1600", "En Nosotros", "38 1/2", and "Xiomara" and "Este Camino Largo". CD

Killer 70s work from this legendary Cuban group! The record's better than most of their output outside of Cuba, and it features a stunning mix of Latin grooves and electric funky elements, in a manner that's very similar to some of the NuYorican groups in America during the time. The great Chucho Valdes is at the head of the group, and even though the band decides to cut versions of a few classical tunes, the groove is still hard and heavy – and the sound is a wonderful example of the rich growth that was happening on the Cuban music scene during the 70s. Titles include "Los Caramelos", "Que Se Sepa, Yo Soy De La Habana", and "Siete Tazas De Cafe". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label pressing. Cover has light ringwear, some edge wear, price sticker remnants, a print blemish in back, and is bent a bit at the bottom left corner.)

✨✧ Chucho Valdes & His ComboComplete 1964 Sessions – Jazz Nocturno/Descarga (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Areito/Egrem/Malanga (Spain), 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredible chapter in the career of legendary Cuban pianist Chuco Valdes – two rare small combo jazz sessions recorded in Havana in the 60s, issued with bonus tracks as well! The group here is a really wonderful one – and features a young Paquito D'Rivera on alto sax and clarinet, as well as flute, trombone, guitar, bass, and percussion – all served up in a lean mode that showcases a whole new sound in Cuban jazz! Many of the tunes have a slightly more modern feel than more familiar Cuban work from the pre-1960 years – and Valdes' ear for unusual phrasings and timings really keeps things fresh throughout. CD features the full albums Jazz Nocturno and Descarga – both issued in 1964 – plus bonus tracks from the Areito anthology Pianoforte Vol 2, also recorded in the same year but with a rhythm trio. CD features 27 titles that include "Bebada", "Atomo", "Por La Libre", "Descarga De Kike", "Tu No Sabes De Amor", "Descarga Para Banda Y Combo", "Guajira Cha", "Quien Baila Mejor", "Por La Libre", "Layda", "Pilin Pilon", "Mambo Influenciado", "Descarga De Monte Adentro", "Noches De Moscu", and "Chachacha Nina". On The Rocks/Mondo Groove (France), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most unusual albums ever cut by the legendary Latin jazz trombonist Juan Pablo Torres – and one of the grooviest, too – a special set that was recorded in Milan in the mid 80s, with backings by a sweet group who do a great job of blending Latin rhythms, clubby grooves, and just the right touch of jazz! Juan's on trombone in the lead – working with the Algo Nuevo group, which features the mighty Gonzalo Rubalcaba on piano, Fender Rhodes, and other keyboards – plus trumpet work from Adalberto Lore, who balances out Torres' sound in a really great way! There's both a mix of electric and acoustic percussion on the set, and the groove is more 80s club than 70s disco – and also comes across with the style of some of the more unusual hybrids that you'd be likely to find on the Areito label during Juan's generation in Cuba. Titles include "Alone", "Que Melcocha", "Y Caramba Que Son", "Oblivion", "Rialto", "Bermuda Triangle", and "Cubadisco". LP, Vinyl record album
