✨✧ Dieter Bihlmaier SelectionMaskerade ... LP
Creative/Sonorama (Germany), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
A very open, spacious sort of set from the German jazz scene of the 70s – one that's very different than both the hard-driving fusion of the time, and some of the more free jazz-styled work from the avant garde! There's a lean lineup here – a group that features a variety of flutes from leader Dieter Bihlmaier, mixed with the bass of Jan Jankeje and drums and percussion of Gerhard Ziegler – plus added vibes from Gerhard Dietz on the second half of the record, which really helps the sound take off. Overall, there's almost a style that's in the more experimental, spiritual side of the MPS/Saba world, with a similar care for the overall sound and conception of the set – on titles that include "Arco Oriental", "Roulette", "Ovation", "Maskerade", "Polyp's Lullaby", and "Echoes". LenoVida E Obra De Johnny McCartney ... CD
CBS/Lion, 1971. New Copy ... $4.99 14.99
Post-Tropicalia work from Leno – a Brazilian singer who'd worked as part of a duo during the Jovem Guarda years, but who really sounds great here on his own! The style's a bit more straightforward rock than the Brazilian sound of a few years back – a bit fuzzy and compressed at times, yet still with a really strong edge, and light years from more mainstream American rock of the time. Many tracks were supposedly banned by the censors in Brazil at the time, although from today's perspective they've got a hard-rocking charm that's more innocent than anything else – a quality that makes the record ripe for rediscovery today! Lion productions have done a wonderful job with the notes and packaging (as usual!) – and titles include "Johnny McCartney", "Por Que Nao", "Lady Baby", "Deixo O Tempo Me Levar", "Peguei Uma Apolo", "Pobre Do Rei", "Sentando No Arco-Iris", and "Bis". Enrico Rava & Mario RuscaDNA (clear red vinyl) (2022 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Saar Milano (Italy), 1997. New Copy ... $29.99 36.99
An overlooked gem from the Italian scene of the 90s – a set that features the sparkling trumpet work of Enrico Rava next to the bold piano lines of Mario Rusca – both coming together here with the vibe of some lost session from the Rom scene of the 60s and 70s! Rusca works here with his core trio – Lucio Terzano on bass and Tony Arco on drums – and on three of the album's tracks, the trio stands alone – great enough together, although the presence of Rava makes things especially nice on the remaining tracks – and Enrico blows in a way that's very different than some of his other late 90s material. Titles include "Chromosome Blues", "DNA", "How High The Moon", "Flawless", and "You & The Night & The Music". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited ediiton on clear red vinyl pressing!)

Mario RuscaMonochrome Blues ... LP
Mono Jazz (Italy), 2021. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99
The first record we've heard in years from Italian pianist Mario Rusca – and a set that really lives up to the strength of all of his classic material from back in the day! The album's a beautifully recorded set – done in mono, which seems to bring an even richer quality to the sound of the piano in the hands of Rusca – deep, round tones that ring out beautifully in a set that's heavy on original compositions – and which features work from Riccardo Fioravanti on bass and Tony Arco on drums. The spirit of the record is like one of those lost Italian jazz treasures from the 60s – the kind of record would normally change hands for hundreds of dollars – and the double-length set is overflowing with gems – on titles that include "Monocrhome Blues", "Double Horn", "Tempo Blues", "Blue Dream", and versions of "Infant Eyes", "Blues For Gwen", "Blues Walk", "Blue Minor", "Rachid", and "Bass Blues". Adventure Music, 2010. Used ... $5.99
Lovely work from guitarist Marcos Amorim – light, lyrical, and filled with gentle dips and turns – a really great blend of Brazilian and American acoustic sensibilities! The music's not exactly jazz, yet has plenty of jazzy inflections – and the overall sound is warm and laidback, like some of the mellower acoustic guitar ECM sessions from the 70s. Bass is by Jorge Albuquerque and drums are by Rafael Barata – and titles include "Music Box", "Morning", "Amarak", "Bantu", "Portraits", and "Ribeirinha". CD

A really sweet little soundtrack to the 1991, WWII set film Mediterraneo – with warm instrumentation on Greek and Middle Eastern string, percussion and wind instruments – seamlessly blended with drums guitars and saxes! The soundtrack was composed by Giancarlo Bigazzi & Marco Falagiani – with nice, subtle and timelessly appealing moments – our favorite bits played on the ethnic instruments – including santouri, bouzouki, gavala and percussion. Manticore, 1974. Very Good- ... $2.99 4.99
The record's got an evocative title and cover – and an evocative sound to match – that heavenly version of prog that made PFM one of the few groups who could both be jamming and sensitive at the same time – often within the space of a single song on the record! The group's in their classic lineup here – awash in flute, guitar, violin, and keyboards – on songs that include a number of songs with help from Peter Sinfield – who maybe adds in some of the gentle lyricism he brought to his work with King Crimson. Titles include "The Mountain", "Have Your Cake & Beat It", "Just Look Away", "Four Holes In The Ground", and "Is My Face On Straight". LP, Vinyl record album

Rez Abbasi, Sheryl Bailey, Peter Bernstein, & OthersHonoring Pat Martino Vol 1 ... CD
High Note, 2022. Used ... $6.99 11.99
A host of great guitarists, all coming together to pay tribute to one of their own – the mighty Pat Martino, an artist on the strings from his early years in the 60s in organ combos, through his very creative 70s material, into a great run of albums in later years too! Pat's memory is in great company here – on tunes that have a nicely lean vibe, and really allow for plenty of space for guitar solos – sometimes with two artists in the lineup, shifting their sound nicely – sometimes just a single player on the cut, depending on the tune! Most tracks feature the same group on rhythm – Kevin Kozol on keyboards, Dezron Douglas on bass, and Allan Mednard on drums – and titles include "Inside Out" with Adam Rogers and Peter Bernstein, "Black Glass" with Kurt Rosenwinkel, "Line Games" with Fareed Haque, "Joyous Lake" with Nir Felder and Oz Noy, "Noshufuru" with Rez Abbasi and Jeff Miles, "Willow" with Ed Cherry and Sheryl Bailey, "Lament" with Russell Malone, "Country Road" with Jeff Harrison, and "On The Stairs" with Dave Stryker and Paul Bollenback. ✨✧ Monty AlexanderYard Movement ... CD
Island, 1995. Used ... $4.99
A great little 90s album from pianist Monty Alexander – done for the short-lived Jamaica Jazz segment of Island Records, and in a mode that's a bit different than some of the straighter jazz records that Alexander had been cutting for years! Monty's Caribbean roots were never a secret, and although they came out in musical modes over the years, this record may present them the most strongly – although with instrumentation that also echoes some 90s electric jazz elements too. The set features Alexander on piano, keyboards, and even a bit of melodica – and the great Ernest Ranglin is in the group on guitar – on titles that include "Moonlight City", "Crying", "Love Notes", "Sneaky Steppers", "Regulator", and a cool "Exodus" medley of both the original film theme, and the Bob Marley song of the same name! Luther AllisonLuther's Blues (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Motown/Universal, 1974. Used ... $6.99
One of the only blues records you'll ever find on Motown – and a mostly straight blues affair with a hard electric sound to it. The album's mostly in the early Alligator Records camp – but there's a few nice funky cuts, like "Now You Got It" and "Into My Life", which both have strong rhythm backing, and a smoother groove that kind of cuts the blues quotient a bit. That's a good thing for us, in case you couldn't tell! CD

Mose AllisonMose Allison Sings (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Prestige, Late 50s. Used ... $5.99
A hipster vocal jazz classic – a full length Prestige album that brings together all of Mose Allison's vocal numbers from his initial run a the label! Mose started out as a pianist, but quickly won even greater attention with his down home, New Orleans-influenced way of singing – a mode that would be copped by many other singers in both rock and soul for years to come – but which still sounds best, here at the source! The recordings feature Mose on piano alongside his vocals – with only bass and drum accompaniment on all numbers – and titles include the mod classics "Parchman Farm" and "Seventh Son", plus "I've Got A Right To Cry", "Young Man's Blues", "Eyesight To The Blind", "If You Live", "One Room Country Shack", and "That's Alright". CD also features 3 bonus tracks, all instrumental – "Blueberry Hill", "Trouble In Mind", and "Creek Bank". CD

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana BrassSRO ... CD
A&M/Shout Factory, 1966. Used ... $8.99
A standing room ovation in the A&M Studios – certainly the kind of reception we'd imagine Herb would get during these glory years of his career! The set's one of the most no-nonsense Tijuana Brass sessions of the 60s – a tightly crafted album that has a bit more jazz than usual sneaking in on some of the tunes, but still enough of that snapping, punchy rhythmic approach that makes Herb and the group so great! As usual, the fluidity here is the strongest point – as the A&M touch takes a sound that should be hokey, and flips it into something really really groovy through warm use of compression in the studio. Titles include "Blue Sunday", "Bean Bag", "Work Song", "Our Day Will Come", "Mexican Road Race", and "Freight Train Joe". CD

An incredible return to form for the Art Ensemble of Chicago – as the return of Joseph Jarman to the group really seems to have given them a new sense of focus, purpose, and direction! There's a tunefulness here that's really wonderful – a sense of lyrical interplay that's especially bright between the horns of Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell, but which is also graced by some beautiful bass work by the late Malachi Favors. The record's a surprising late classic in the group's catalog, and has really renewed our interest in the Art Ensemble. Astral TravelIf You Say You Are From This Planet, Why Do You Treat It Like You Do? ... LP
Hyperjazz (Italy), 2020. Near Mint- ... $9.99 11.99
A record that really carries its message in its title – a set of spiritual ruminations on the nature of existence – inspired by the writings of Sun Ra, and carried off with vocals by Dwight Trible – who joins this Italian group for the recording! Each song is inspired by a different poem from Ra's This Planet Is Doomed – and the music is freely improvised, but in a relatively spiritual way – with leader Tommaso Cappellato on drums, with Fabrizio Puglisi on piano and keyboards, Piero Bittolo Bon on reeds and electronics, and Marco Privato on bass. The set may be one of the most avant albums that Trible ever recorded – and his vocals have the strong resonance of his straighter recordings, but a bit more bite, and a really mighty reach – on titles that include "Tomorrow's Destiny", "Infinity", "Science Has Changed", "The End", "Time", and "You Are From This Planet". MCA, Late 70s. Used ... $4.99
Fantastic music by one of the all-time greats – easily one of our favorite soul artists of the 70s, and a hell of a jazz musician too! The tracks here are all from Roy Ayers' landmark run at Polydor Records – a place where he turned his straight jazz sound of the 60s into a mix of spiritual, funky, and smooth-stepping grooves that are totally great! The collection brings together some of the key Ayers cuts that have broke big with the younger generation – some because of famous use as hip hop samples – and titles include "Mystic Voyage", "We Live In Brooklyn Baby", "Running Away", "Coffy Is The Color", "Don't Stop The Feeling", "Love Will Bring Us Back Together", "searching", "Gotta Find A Lover", and "Everybody Loves The Sunshine". Burt Bacharach/Hal DavidPromises, Promises (remastered pressing) ... CD
United Artists/Ryko, 1968. Used ... $8.99
Burt Bacharach and Hal David's sole entry into the musical genre – a weird little musical that's based on the film The Apartment! The record's a lot less "Broadway" than you might think – and often handled with the same sly syncopated style of Bacharach's regular pop work – particularly that of the later A&M years. And even if you're not the sort to go for the usual sort of musical, this one's filled with some really great little tunes that stand with some of Burt's best later work – and which are almost even more interesting, given some of the themes that get explored! Musical direction is by Harold Wheeler, and Jerry Orbach's one of the key vocalists of the set! Titles include "Upstairs", "Knowing When To Leave", "She Likes Basketball", "Half As Big As Life", "Our Little Secret", "Christmas Day", "Grapes Of Roth", and "Wanting Things". And even better, this new version includes some great improvements – including remastering, a "fix" on the pitch of Jerry Orbach's vocals, and a song order that replicates their appearance in the original musical! Jorge BenNegro E Lindo (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Philips/Polysom (Brazil), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99 39.99
A seminal set from Jorge Ben – one that mixes samba soul with more baroque arrangements from the legendary Arthur Verocai! The record's got a different feel than some of Jorge's other work – almost a wider vision of music that ties his usual funky style to some of the more ambitious modes being explored by Marcos Valle and Edu Lobo at the time – expressed here in some larger instrumental passages that shade the tunes lightly, while still letting Jorge step out strongly on vocals and the usual mix of tight percussion and raspy guitar. Titles include "Que Maravilha", "Rita Jeep", "Comanche", "Porque E Proibido Pisa Na Grama", "Cassius Marcelo Clay", "Palomaris", "Maria Domingas", and "Negro E Lindo". LP, Vinyl record album

George BensonLove Remembers ... CD
Warner, 1993. Used ... $4.99
Sweet stepping soul from George Benson – a batch of tracks that wraps up his wonderful vocals and guitar with some great contemporary rhythms! The vibe here is nicely laidback – never too smooth, nor some of the more commercial territory that Benson was trying for a decade before – and in a way, it's almost as if George has been digging some of the less mainstream soul sounds of the time, as he's hitting a sound that would certainly appeal to steppers in Chicago, or the indie soul and smooth jazz scene of the early 90s. Benson's got a great way of scatting lightly with his guitar, and there's a leanness to most of the tracks, despite a relatively full lineup of players. Titles include "I'll Be Good To You", "Got To Be There", "My Heart Is Dancing", "Love Remembers", "Come Into My World", "Somewhere Island", "Calling You", "Lovin On Borrowed Time", and "Love Of My Life". Jerry BergonziDog Star ... CD
Savant, 2017. Used ... $9.99
Jerry Bergonzi has been making records for decades – yet lately, he seems to be finding an even fresher way forward – with a set like this that can grab us right from the very first note, and having us get excited all over again about his music! Bergonzi's tenor sound is tremendous – that raw tone that's been building up right from the start – but maybe the strongest element here is the group, which seems to have this soaring vision that's even more than the sum of its parts – driven on by this excellent presence on bass from Johnny Aman, whose dark notes really color the music, and open up the moodiest side of Bergonzi's music – alongside the excellent Carl Winther on piano, who wrote songs on the record alongside Jerry – plus Phil Grenadier on trumpet, and Anders Mogensen on drums. The trumpet/tenor pairing, quite familiar in jazz, somehow manages to find all these new places throughout – bursting out beautifully on titles that include "Pleiades", "Dog Star", "Darkness", "Live Stream", "Vertigo", and "Repor-Pa-Int". Jerry BergonziIntersecting Lines ... CD
Savant, 2014. Used ... $9.99
The title's a great one for this album – not just because tenorist Jerry Bergonzi always seems to have this forward-thinking, linear quality about his work – but also because his talents here intersect strongly with the alto sax of Dick Oatts! The pair really create some magic here – a balance between Bergonzi's bold tone and that raspier, more personal sound of Oatts – wrapped up beautifully with bass from Dave Santoro and drums from Andrea Michelutti – no piano at all, which only seems to further the fluid quality of the saxophones! There's a loose, free swing to the record – a quality that's still quite rhythmic, but which opens up without the piano and lets the saxophonists get very expressive – sparking stunning lines on original Bergonzi tracks that include "Creature Feature", "Tanzania", "Dig Oatts", "Itchy", "Arbonius Unt", and "Horton's Lament". Mac Du Son/Day End, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
Warmly-crafted work from Reginaldo Bessa – an artist who'd cut earlier bossa material in both Argentina and Brazil – but who works here in a more mature style that's full of sweet 70s touches! At some level, the vibe is maybe a bit like Marcos Valle – as Bessa has this raspy charm to his vocals that really goes beyond the barrier of language, and which is set up here in these light arrangements that mix electric instrumentation with jazzier acoustic touches – sophisticated, but very down to earth too – with a wonderful vibe throughout! Titles include "Tres Racas Tristes", "Tributo A Cassius Clay", "Canto Para Nao Chorar", "Passageiro Do Vento", "Memorias", and "O Tempo". LP, Vinyl record album

High Note, 2020. Used ... $9.99
We love this group – and with each new record, they give us reason to love them even more – and realize that their totality is even greater than the sum of their many all-star parts! The lineup alone is enough – Wayne Escoffery on tenor, Jeremy Pelt on trombone, James Burton III on trombone, Victor Gould on piano, Rashaan Carter on bass, and Mark Whitfield on drums – but together, they sound even more amazing – kind of crackling and bristling with energy, as if the players are keenly engaged in each other's company – not in a competitive way, but with a collaborative energy that even tops most other groups comprised of leaders in a single combo! Soaring colors are balanced by beautiful depths – and titles include "Iron Man", "For The Kids", "No Words Needed", "Twin Towers", "Involuntary Servitude", "Mr Willis", and "Ascension". CD

Art BlakeyLive At The Monterey Jazz Festival 1972 ... CD
Monterey Jazz Festival/Concord, 1972. Used ... $8.99
A rare live date from Art Blakey – recorded right around the same time as his Giants Of Jazz concert album for Atlantic in 1972! Like that set, this one features Blakey working with a group of bigger stars than his usual Jazz Messengers – a compelling assemblage of players that includes Thelonious Monk on piano, Roy Eldridge and Clark Terry on trumpets, Kai Winding on trombone, and Sonny Stitt on both alto and tenor sax! The feel is less Blakey-like than some of Art's other material – and more in a classic bop-styled approach overall – but that's no complaint, given the quality of the work, and the strength of the solo players. Titles include "Blue N Boogie", "Round Midnight", "Stardust", "Lover Man", "Perdido", "The Man I Love", and "Night In Tunisia". CD

Bobby Blue BlandCall On Me/That's The Way Love Is ... LP
Duke, 1963. Very Good ... $11.99
One of Bobby Blue Bland's best albums ever – a stunning mix of blues and soul that's the kind of killer stuff that will make you a fan of his forever! There's no beating Bland at this point in his career – and the record is one of the finest illustrations of the power he brought to his work, subtly balancing a sense of class with rootsier down-hominess that few other singers could ever handle so well. That blend allowed Bobby to reach out to way more audiences than most of his contemporaries – and it's still equally powerful today – and the album's arrangements by Joe Scott are impeccable, with a slight touch of jazz that we totally love. The album includes classics like "That's The Way Love Is", "Call On Me", "Cry Lover Cry", "Care For Me", "Bobby's Blues", and "Honky Tonk". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 1981. Very Good+ ... $5.99 7.99
A set that showcases the never-ending growth and imagination of reedman Arthur Blythe during this fruitful period of his career – and his ability to effortlessly blend together different elements in his music – especially sides of the New York loft jazz scene, and the Chicago-based AACM! The tunes are beautiful – mostly originals, and showing a richer spirituality than even a year before – while still working in that compellingly rhythmic mode that Arthur was hitting during these years – in a lineup that features Blythe on alto, Abdul Wadud on cello, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, Steve McCall and Bobby Battle on drums, John Hicks on piano, Amina Claudine Myers on organ, and Fred Hopkins on bass. The mix of electric and acoustic elements is fantastic – very fresh, even all these many years later – and titles include "Misty", "Spirits In The Field", "Just A Closer Walk With Thee", "Reverence", and "Contemplation". Booker T & The MGsThat's The Way It Should Be ... CD
Columbia, 1994. Used ... $1.99 2.99
A surprising mid 90s comeback for Booker T & The MGs – a session that reunites Booker T on Hammond, Steve Cropper on guitar, and Donald Duck Dunn on bass – with additional drums from either Steve Jordan or James Gadson! The sound is somewhat in the classic Stax mode of years back – in that most tracks are spare instrumentals with lots of lines from the organ and guitar – spun out over rhythms that are never too complicated, and which have the stepping soul instrumental quality of the Memphis scene from years back. But the sound is also somewhat different too – produced with a bit more "room" than in the Stax days, and with a sound on the organ that's not as low-end as before – a bit brighter overall. Still, the record's a lot better than you might expect for the time – a nicely restrained effort that tries to hearken back to the old days. Titles include "I Can't Stand The Rain", "Camel Ride", "Let's Wait Awhile", "Gotta Serve Somebody", "Slip Slidin", "Mo Greens", and "Just My Imagination". CD

Chico BuarqueCarioca ... CD
Biscoito Fino/Discmedi (Spain), 2006. Used ... $2.99 4.99
Tremendous work from an artist whose talents never dim over the years – and even then, a set that's quite possibly one of Chico's best in many many years! The record has a depth and complexity that's really wonderful – like the best of Caetano Veloso's more sophisticated work of the past decade – and Chico's working here with arranger Luiz Claudio Ramos in a set of tracks that mix rootsy instrumentation with more complicated phrasing – a style that carries echoes of some of Edu Lobo's best 70s material, and which, like that, has a genre-less quality that's all its own! Chico's original lyrics and raspy vocals would be enough to make this record great, but the instrumentation takes it to a space that's even more special. Tracks include "Suburbio", "Outros Sonhos", "As Atrizes", "Renata Maria", "Leve", "Sempre", "Imagina", "Dura Na Queda", and "Ode Aos Ratos". CD

A young player, but one with a really tremendous sound – easily poised to become one of the most impressive European saxophone talents of the next few years! Pescara plays alto, but with a depth that makes him sound like a classic player from many years back – a sense of fullness and focus that's really amazing, and which never slips up for a minute. A few tracks here have him really soaring out with unbridled energy – while others hit a calmer, more sensitive side – and all tracks here are originals by Cafiso, showing a nascent writing skill that definitely bears watching. The group's a quartet, and titles include "Louisiana", "Happy Time", "Sir Charles", "She Loves Me", "Blues For Angel", "Goodbye Elvin", and "The Bear". CD

This excellent 2 CD set covers just about their entire career, from their harder funkier roots in the early days, with numbers like "Rigor Mortis", "Post Mortem" and "Funk Funk", to the wigged early 80s dancefloor numbers "Shake Your Pants", "Freaky Dancin", and "Keep It Hot", to their later, bass heavy radio numbers like "She's Strange", "Attack Me With Your Love" and "Candy". A seminal set from Erasmo Carlos – a record that has him stepping past the simpler rock modes of his youth, and really embracing some of the great changes going on in Brazilian music at the start of the 70s! These changes aren't just the expected psych modes, but also some of the more lofty, complicated arrangements used by artists like Marcos Valle or Edu Lobo – a mode that comes through beautifully here and sets up Erasmo's vocals with these incredible backings that really make him sound fantastic – a bit funky here, a bit groovy there – and sometimes with this more cerebral sound that none of his listeners would have expected a few records back. Titles include "Estou Dez Anos Atrasado", "Jeep", "Teletema", "Sentado A Beira Do Caminho", "Coqueiro Verde", "A Bronca Da Galinha", "Menina", and "Saudosismo".
