Beautiful material from the great Archie Shepp
– a sublime set of duets with pianist Joachim Kuhn
, done at a level that has Shepp
playing in an extremely soulful way – long tenor lines that soar out beautifully over just the piano – with no other rhythm or accompaniment, but a very strong sound throughout! Kuhn
's piano is great, too – not nearly as bombastic as in early years – and, as with later Shepp
, much more careful about sound, space, and timing – which makes for a perfect match between both players, and a record with a very haunting vibe! Titles include "Segue", "Transmitting", "Nina", "Sketch/
Monette", and "Lonely Woman".
