Archie Shepp & Jason MoranLet My People Go ... LP
Archie Ball (France), 2021. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99
Fantastic duets between saxophonist Archie Shepp and pianist Jason Moran – a record that really continues a legacy of this sort of work that Shepp has previously done with players like Dollar Brand, Horace Parlan, and Mal Waldron! The strength of Moran's expression here is every bit as strong as those older giants – and, if anything, he also brings a wider sense of sonic scope to the record – this way of opening up these layers of color and emotion with just a few notes – very subtle, but extremely powerful – and at a level that's really matched with the kind of incredible sounds that we've always come to expect from Shepp – a sense of genius that hasn't dimmed at all over the years. The titles are mostly familiar, but delivered in variations that are completely unique – on tracks that include "Wise One", "Go Down Moses", "Isfahan", "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child", "Round Midnight", and "He Cares". Archie Shepp & Joachim KuhnWo Man ... LP
Archie Ball (France), 2010. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99
Beautiful material from the great Archie Shepp – a sublime set of duets with pianist Joachim Kuhn, done at a level that has Shepp playing in an extremely soulful way – long tenor lines that soar out beautifully over just the piano – with no other rhythm or accompaniment, but a very strong sound throughout! Kuhn's piano is great, too – not nearly as bombastic as in early years – and, as with later Shepp, much more careful about sound, space, and timing – which makes for a perfect match between both players, and a record with a very haunting vibe! Titles include "Segue", "Transmitting", "Nina", "Sketch/Monette", and "Lonely Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Archie SheppGemini ... CD
Archie Ball (France), 2002/2007. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A well-titled record from the mighty Archie Shepp – as the 2CD set works more like a twin-album package – given that each disc features a different performance! CD1 is billed as The Reverse – and has Shepp working in soaring, spiritual territory in a killer quartet – with sharp-edged brilliance that reminds us why we love his work on the Archie Ball label so much – as it's got a real back-to-basics quality that returns Archie to his most soulful styles of the 70s! Shepp plays both tenor and soprano, and the core group features Wayne Dockery on some massive bass, plus Tom McClung on piano and Steve McCraven on drums – and at one point, Chuck D steps in with a rhyme, and at another Stephane Guery plays a bit of guitar. Yet the main energy here comes from Shepp – whose tenor is tremendous, and really returned to his spiritual fire of decades back – on titles that include "Revolution", "Burning Bright", "Trippin", "Intertwining Spirits", "La Manzana", "Eva", and "Time Stood Still". CD2 is titled Live In Souillac – and has a really special performance from Archie, in a quartet with Amina Claudine Myers on piano, Ronnie Burrage on drums, and Cameron Brown on bass! Brown's bass is wonderful – and really holds the record together at the bottom – while Myers soars with spiritual tones on her piano, and even vocalizes a bit. Shepp plays tenor and soprano, and titles include "Hope Two", "Call Him", "Do You Want To Be Saved", and "Ujaama". CD

✨✧ Archie SheppI Hear The Sound (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Archie Ball (France), 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Archie Shepp returns to some of the hippest, most righteous modes of his early 70s album for Impulse Records – especially those post-Paris sessions that often brought in singers and an expanded instrumental lineup! The performance here is a live one, and features beautiful vocals from Amina Claudine Myers, Marion Rampal, and Cecile McLorin Salvant – who sometimes work in a righteous chorus mode, sometimes sing solo, to bring out this depth in the compositions that we really love. Shep's on tenor and soprano sax, and sings a bit too – and there's a larger ensemble that features Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, plus guitar, trumpets, trombones, and even some added strings. Jimmy Owens conducts, and titles include a very cool reworking of the classic "Blues For Brother G Jackson" – plus "Quiet Dawn", "Cry Of My People", "Arms", "Attica Blues", "Mama Too Tight", and "Goodbye Sweet Pops". ✨✧ Archie SheppPhat Jam In Milano ... CD
Archie Ball (France), 2007. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A cool contemporary project from the legendary Archie Shepp – and one that's got a lot more power than you'd expect from the title! Shepp works here with hip hop MC Napoleon Maddox – who brings in rhymes and a bit of beatbox to a performance from an excellent group that features Shepp on tenor and soprano sax, Oliver Lake on additional saxes, Joe Fonda on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums! Maddox comes off a lot better than you'd expect – very respectful, and adding in his words in a way that surprisingly augments Shepp's performance – giving it an intensity that's even different than some of Archie's few spoken passages. The tracks are also nice and long, and feature very open, soulful instrumental solos – and titles include "Casket", "Ill Biz", "The Life We Chose", and "Revolution" – plus a surprisingly great take on "Kashmir", a tune we didn't think would transform this well to a jazz mode. ✨✧ Archie Shepp with Dar GnawaKindred Spirits Vol 1 ... CD
Archie Ball (France), 2005. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest Archie Shepp recordings we've heard in years – a set that has his quartet working alongside the Dar Gnawa group from Tanger – who bring in all these wonderful exotic qualities to the music! Shepp's own tenor is wonderful, and takes on some very spiritual qualities in the setting – a bit like Yusef Lateef in some of his formidable jazz/world crossover work of the early years – and the group has some especially wonderful work from bassist Wayne Dockery, whose round, deep tones help shape the sound of the music throughout – creating these modal impulses that are a perfect bridge between the spirit of all the players! Titles include "Suite Blue", "Middle Passage", "Groove Mosso", "Kindred Spirits", and "Dawn Of Freedom". CD

✨✧ Archie Bell & The DrellsLet's Groove – The Archie Bell & The Drells Story ... CD
Big Break (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A great great group who never lost their groove – featured here on a set that's the first-ever label-spanning collection of their genius! The set begins with a huge amount of tracks from the Atlantic Records years of Archie Bell & The Drells – records that start with their raw Texas funk groove, then move into the group hitting a Philly soul mode – which they do wonderfully, and continue to expand their sound in a really great way! The second half focuses on their sublime 70s Philly gems for Gamble & Huff – tracks that showed up on the Philadelphia International family of labels, and which had Archie and the group sounding equally great on the modern club dancefloors! There's also some rare material that was recorded in between these stretches for the Glades label – and the 44 track, 2CD set is overflowing with rare gems, well-remembered favorites, and other well-chosen tracks. Titles include "Soul City Walk", "I Love My Baby", "My Balloon's Going Up", "You Never Know What's On A Woman's Mind", "Girls Grow Faster Than Boys", "Old People", "Strategy", "Show Me How To Dance", "Glad You Could Make It (12" disco)", "Go For What You Know", "Showdown", "Dog Eat Dog", "A Soldier's Prayer 1967", "Do The Choo Choo", "Girl You're Too Young", "Don't Let The Music Slip Away", "Wrap It Up", "Deal With Him", "Archie's In Love", "Ain't Nothing For A Man In Love", "I've Been Missing You", and "Nothing Comes Easy". Archie SheppTrue Blue (Japanese paper sleeve edition – SACD) ... CD
Venus (Japan), 1998. Used ... $44.99
Great Shepp with a great group – a quartet that pairs Archie's amazing tenor with the piano of John Hicks! The album's one of the best of Archie Shepp's later ballad albums – and has a really standout feel, thanks to Hicks' warmer tones on the piano alongside Shepp's raspier notes. While other groups joining Shepp on ballad dates all seem to veer towards the inclinations of the leader, Hicks instead seeks to act in counterpoint – creating a fuller sound and a greater depth overall through his well-crafted lines on piano – never too sentimental, but with a sense of joy and lyricism that's really wonderful. Other group members are great too – and include George Mraz on bass and Bill Drummond on drums – on titles that include "Lonnie's Lament", "Time After Time", "All Or Nothing At All", "But Beautiful", "Que Rest-t-il De Nos Amours", "Blue Train",a nd "A Little Surprise For The Ladies". ✨✧ Archie SheppDeja Vu (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Venus (Japan), 2001. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful ballads from Archie Shepp – one of his later dates for Venus Records, recorded with a soulful, subtle sound that's totally great! The Shepp heard here is hardly the freewheeling player of 60s avant years – and is instead an aging master of the tenor who manages to draw on years of experience, and bring them into play with simple touches that are totally great! Most tunes here are taken at a relaxed pace – with rhythm from Harold Mabern on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Billy Drummond on drums – but Shepp blows with this offbeat sensibility that's really wonderful, a bit like some of the understated genius Coleman Hawkins brought to records like this during his own later years. The album's drenched in soul, and recorded with really beautiful sound – and titles include "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Deja Vu", "April In Paris", "Sous Le Ciel De Paris", and "L'Ame Des Poetes". ✨✧ Harvey ScalesLove-Itis – All The Rare & Unissued 45s From The Vaults Of Magic Touch 1967 to 1977 ... LP
Magic Touch/Funky Delicacies, Late 60s/1970s. Near Mint- 2LP ... $19.99
A beautifully done look at the music of Harvey Scales – a damn funky cat from the Milwaukee scene, finally getting his due! The package is overflowing with groovers – hard funky 45 cuts that Scales recorded for the Magic Touch label – mostly in the late 60s and start of the 70s – wrapped up here in a lavish booklet that's filled with well-researched notes, and vintage photos – a set that really sets a whole new standard for the Tuff City label! Scales' groove is one that we've always loved on 45 – a dancefloor-directed version of soul that falls somewhere in a space between Archie Bell & The Drells and Dyke & The Blazers – but with a heavier sound overall. Yet having all these cuts together in one place seems to give them even more intensity than before – a powerhouse package of 20 rare tracks that run the gamut from upbeat soul to heavy funk to a few early disco numbers as well. Titles include "Love-It is", "Broadway Freeze", "Get Down", "The Yolk", "The Funky Yolk", "Get Down 1970", "Funky Football", "Trying To Survive", "Bump Your Thang", "Groove On Sexy Lady", "Rock The World", "Welcome Home", "The Sound Of Soul", "Too Good To Be True", and "Love Is A Gas". Beautifully done 2LP gatefold with all the tracks from the CD version. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousReady Or Not – Thom Bell Philly Soul Arrangements & Productions 1965 to 1978 ... CD
Ace/Kent (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Sublime soul from the great Thom Bell – one of our favorite arranger, producer, songwriters of all time – and a talent who really helped push the Philly soul scene much farther than most during the 70s! Bell was trained as a classical pianist as a kid – which might explain part of his ear for a special sort of tune – but by the time of this work, he was neck-deep in the soul scene – and working with a fantastic track record for bringing the best out of a very wide variety of artists! Bell was especially great with groups – he helped more than a few really stretch out their wings and grow – but as you'll hear here, Thom also handled a fantastic range of music in Philly studios – all with magnificent touches that really set the tunes apart from the rest – French horns, harpsichord, and especially that twangy sitar sound that worked so well with a harmony ballad. The set's got 23 tracks in all, and a massive set of notes on the man and his music – with titles that include "What I See" by Three Degrees, "Here I Go Again" by Archie Bell & The Drells, "You've Been Untrue" by The Delfonics, "Moody Woman" by Jerry Butler, "Something For Nothing" by MFSB, "One Man Band" by Ronnie Dyson, "Close The Door" by Teddy Pendergrass, "Life Is A Song Worth Singing" by Johnny Mathis, "Look The Other Way" by Lesley Gore, "What Kind Of Lady" by Dee Dee Sharp, "It's The Same Old Love" by The Courtship, "Do You Remember Yesterday" by The Intruders, "Track Of The Cat" by Dionne Warwick, and "I Wanna Be A Free Girl" by Dusty Springfield.
