Roberto Roena Y Su Apollo SoundEl Progreso – Roberto Roena Y Su Apollo Sound 10 ... CD
Fania, 1978. Used ... $19.99
The 10th album in a legendary 70s run from Roberto Roena and Apollo Sound – a set that has the group deepening their emotion and social themes a bit more than before! The core Apollo Sound is still very firmly in place here – with tight salsa-heavy horns offset by a saxophone, plus plenty of timbales, congas, and bongos at the bottom – cooking things up with an approach that's highly rhythmic, but shaded in wonderfully by the horns. Vocalists here include Tito Cruz and Carlos Santos – and titles include "Regano Al Corazon", "El Progreso", "Viva Cortijo", "Lamento De Concepion", "Necessito Llamar Su Atencion", and "Lo Que Dios Me Dio". CD
(Out of print. Please note: there is water damage to tray card.)

Fania, 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
A lucky seventh album from Roberto Roena and his groundbreaking Apollo Sound combo – a set that's filled with spectacular arrangements and a new level of sophistication for the group – yet one that's still firmly pointed towards the dancefloor! There's a richness here that's really great – an array of tones and colors that flows out from some incredibly strong charts for the horn players – who include Miguel Rodriguez on tenor and flute, set in amidst the brassier players to give the record a nice shade of soul. Vocals are by Papo Sanchez and Sammy Gonzalez, and titles include the classic "Mi Desengano", plus "Que Me Castique Dios", "A Bailar Mi Bomba", "Te Voy A Tratar", "La Mala Mana", "Hoy Mi Dia Triste", and "Estas Equivocada". ✨✧ Roberto RoenaRoberto Roena Y Su Apollo Sound ... CD
Fania, Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first of Roberto Roena's Apollo Sound albums for Fania – and one that links his group a bit more towards the Latin Soul generation than you might expect! Roena's definitely displaying that percussion-heavy take on salsa that made him such a huge star in the 70s – but the group also do a few great soul covers too – including a funky version of Sly Stone's "Sing A Simple Song" and a bouncing playful version of "Spinning Wheel" – every bit as groovy as some of the other transformations of that tune. The rest of the album's equally great, too – and there's a hard percussive groove on most tracks – nice and tight, on tracks that include "El Sordo", "El Pato De La Bahia", "Tu Loco Loco, Y Yo Tranquilo", "Consolacion", and "El Escapulario". ✨✧ Roberto RoenaRoberto Roena Y Su Apollo Sound 3 ... CD
Fania, Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Bold, righteous grooves from Roberto Roena – grooving wonderfully with his classic Apollo Sound combo, with a sound that was easily one of the sharpest on the New York Latin scene of the 70s! The group features piano by Ray Coen, and some nice tenor and flute work from Freddie Miranda – whose reed touches add a nice degree of soul to the record, and offset the vocals of Piro Mantill and Frankie Calderon. Arrangements are by Coen, Elias Lopes, and Mario Ortiz – and overall the album's a crackler that's remained one of the best in Roena's classic catalog. Titles include "Hagan Silencio", "Se Pone Bueno", "El Traqueteo", "Yo Soy Chambelon", and "Soy El Terror". CD
(Out of print "white back" pressing.)

✨✧ Roberto RoenaRoberto Roena Y Su Apollo Sound 6 ... CD
International, 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
A real breakthrough album from Roberto Roena and his Apollo Sound combo – a record that showed the world that this scrappy little group could stand head to head with the giants of the 70s salsa years! As on other records, there's a strongly percussive vibe throughout – bongos from Roena, plus timbales, conga, and other percussion – all topped by a great horn section that features two trumpets, tenor, trombone, and flute – all of whom hit some wonderfully jazzy moments at time, filling in the set with some great tropical shades and colors! Vocals are by Tito Cruz and Sammy Gonzalez, and a number of well placed percussion and horn solos on just about every track. Titles include "Traicion", "Cucarachita Cucarachon", "En Mis Rosales", "Que Se Sepa", "Ese Soy Yo", and "Herencia Rumbera". CD

✨✧ Robin Jones & His QuintetDenga ... LP
Apollo Sound/Jazz Room (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A hell of a record of Latin Jazz – recorded in the UK, but with a vibe that puts the whole thing right up there with some of the most inventive American albums of a few years before – such as Latin jazz classics by Sabu Martinez, Cal Tjader, or Eddie Palmieri! Robin Jones is the leader, and plays drums and timbales here – and the group are a tight sextet who work with no vocals at all – just flutes and saxes from Olaf Vas, a great talent who really shades in the sound – plus piano and Rhodes from Ian Henry, bass from Percy Borthwick, and percussion from Simon Morton and Tony Uter. Given the lack of other instrumentation, there's a fantastic focus on the percussion, reeds, and piano – and the whole thing's a cracker through and through, with titles that include "Africa Revisited", "Urubu", "Con Fuego", "Denga", and "Sucio Mambo". ✨✧ Robin Jones SevenEl Maja ... CD
Apollo Sound/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
A classic album of Latin grooves from the UK scene – a musical world that wasn't always a hotbed of styles in the Afro-Cuban mode, but which did have the benefit of the mighty percussionist Robin Jones! Jones was born in India, but moved to London during the same post-colonial jazz migration that brought the city key talents from the West Indies – and like Joe Harriott, Shake Keane, and others, Robin's contributions to the scene were crucial during the years he worked in a variety of different groups! This set is Jones' second as a leader – a very hip set that's all jazz all the way through – with plenty of percussion from Robin, and a combo that includes trumpet, saxes, keyboards, and vibes – all used in ways that take off from the best jazz descarga styles into a range of other modes. Titles include "El Maja", "The Wailer", "Batucada Da Vida", "Carica Papaya", "El Lobo", "Chant Afrique", and "Atlas". CD
(Recent Japanese pressing – includes obi.)

Motown, 1979. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
We always think that it's unusual that after years and years of success in the early 70s with strong single solo artists, Motown really seemed to bank its hope for the 80s on a group soul sound that was part funk, part dancefloor, and part harmony soul. Fortunately, the label did a pretty good job with that sound – and Apollo are a strong example of the label's strength at the time. Gene Page, Wade Marcus, and others handled the arrangements – and tracks include "Astro Disco", "Apollo", "Never Learn", "Happiness", and "Space Cannibals". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Run-DMCRaising Hell (expanded edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Profile, 1986. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The massive third album from Run DMC – a set that was done at a time when the duo were totally at the top of their game – and broke out big to a much wider audience than the usual hip hop crowd! Part of the album's strength is its guitar-heavy sound on some of the grooves – produced by Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons with a classic early Def Jam vibe, in the same manner that helped the Beastie Boys get their records in the hands of folks who'd never buy hip hop otherwise! And that sound comes to culmination on the album's hit collaboration with Aerosmith on a remake of "Walk This Way". But apart from that rocker, most of the rest of the set also shows an increased complexity in both the lyricism of the pair, and the way Jam Master Jay serves up their beats – which makes for a stone classic all the way through, on tracks that include "Peter Piper", "It's Tricky", "My Adidas", "Proud To Be Black", "You Be Illin'", and "Walk This Way". Bonus tracks on this expanded edition include "My Adidas (acapella)", "Walk This Way (demo)", "Lord Of Lyrics (demo)", "Raising Hell Radio Tour Spot" and "Live At The Apollo Raw Vocal Commercial". CD

A bright batch of remixed tunes full of pulsing bouncy beats, keys, strings and grooves – essentially a remix project of songs from the film City Of God – a gritty story set in the slums of Rio! That feel is totally re-imagined here, though, as the set is full of positive, bouncing vibes and celebratory atmosphere! The cuts all have a really bright & bouncing sheen, and they are for the most part beat-heavy, club-ready instrumentals. It's the kind of sound we love on the Compost and Mr. Bongo labels, but the vibe demonstrated here is much more immediate – it's all about the bounce! Titles include "Hard Galinha" by Renato Cohen, "Convite Pra Vida (rmx)" by Beto Villares, "Busca (rmx)" by Apollo 9, "Mad Zoo Sessions" by Mad Zoo, and "Funk Da Virada (waterfront lounge mix)" by Eraldo Palmero. A mighty nice little package – one that's overflowing with the special sort of Latin and soul music hybrids that rose up from the Spanish Harlem scene in the late 60s – the kind of cuts that helped establish Fania Records as one of the most important Latin labels around – and one of the grooviest too! These aren't the 70s salsa tracks that Fania spread across the globe – but the more New York-styled numbers that often had English language lyrics in the lead, sung by a soulful vocalist – and set to small combo rhythms that were overflowing with energy, and plenty of touches of jazz, soul, and funk! 2LP set features great notes on this special time in Latin music – and many titles are presented in their rare 45rpm single mixes. A collection of cuts that's way hipper than you might expect – partly the hard rock promised in the title, but also served up in all these really weird and wild ways that more than live up to the unusual spirit of the Finnish scene of the 70s! At the time, Finland was a surprising hotbed of creative recording activity – farther reaches in jazz, inside grooves in fusion, and a strong legacy of rock groups who were really picking up the fuzz and power that UK groups had unleashed at the end of the 60s! There's plenty here that would stand perfectly right next to the headiest guitar hero groups of that generation – but there's also differences at times, too – like a cool, compressed production style that often makes for some really great sonic play overall – and heavy drums that almost get into some funky passages at points. And of course, the lyrics are all in Finnish, which makes these tracks sound even cooler than they might in English – served up on a well-chosen set list that includes "Superkingi" by Jigsaw, "Palaa" by Yellow, "Rokkilauaja Vain" by Danny, "Uskontunnustus" by Woodoo, "Pikku Nainen" by Hard Rock Sallinen, "Plastic Maailma" by Paroni Paakkunaien, "Kivistdan" by Sulo's Rock Band, "Vieras Sateesta" by Apostolit, "American Look" by Haikara, and "Hideko Tojo" by Apollo. Brown also opens up with some cool bad-rapping moments, too – and titles include "It's A New Day So Let A Man Come In & Do The Popcorn", "Get Up Get Into It Get Involved", "Super Bad", "Sex Machine", "Escape-Ism", "Make It Funky", "Hot Pants", "Soul Power", and "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose". ✨✧ Ike & Tina TurnerWorld Of Ike & Tina – Live! ... LP
United Artists, 1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fiercely funky live set from Ike & Tina Turner – one that almost feels like some of the James Brown albums at The Apollo – given the expanded structure of the presentation, which also includes the whole Ike Turner universe! The show gets announced with this bold sense of pride – ala some of James' "showtime" announcements – and it begins with funky backings from The Family Vibe, who continue the groove throughout – then opens to the Ikettes singing on their own, before Tina takes the stage and makes the whole thing really come together! There's a great variety of material here – all of which gets a really sharp sound, thanks to the setting – and Ike and the crew really transform the tunes, and set them up perfectly for Tina's vocals to knock them out of the park. Tracks include "Let Me Touch Your Mind", "Shaft", "I Gotcha", "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window", "Dust My Broom", "I Wish It Would Rain", "Get Back", "Games People Play", "Annie Had A Baby", "Chopper", "River Deep Mountain High", and "Just One More Day". ✨✧ VariousFreak Off – Latin Breakbeats, Basslines, & Boogaloo ... CD
Harmless (UK), 1960s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Heavy Latin funk and soul! This excellent set follows in the same vein as Harmless' other Latin sets – dipping into obscurities of the late 60s and early 70s to come up with a cool batch of cuts that sound totally fresh today. And even though some of these tracks have already been reissued on the full CDs by the artists, the general groove of the set makes the tracks really great together – especially since some of the best cuts are from albums that are otherwise not that great. Titles include "Para Los Rumberos" by Tito Puente, "Psychedelic Blues" by Willie Bobo, "Control" by Ismael Quinones, "Freak Off" by Orchestra Harlow, "Black & Blues" by The Latin Soul Drives, "Spanish Grease" by El Chicano, "Combolu" by El Gran Combo, "Es Tu Cosa" by Joe Bataan, "Que Se Sepa" by Roberto Roena Y Su Apollo Sound, and "Fun City Shingaling" by Joe Quijano & His Conjunto Cachana. ✨✧ VariousIt's A Good Good Feeling – The Latin Soul Of Fania Records (4CDs with bonus 7 inch single) ... CD
Fania/Craft, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 4CD & 7 inch ... Out Of Stock
These are all the mixes from the rare 45rpm singles issued by Fania back in the day – and although the songs are wonderful, the collection together is even cooler as a whole – dozens of tracks, including some really rare ones – all bound up in a 7" book-styled cover, with 60 pages of notes, and a bonus funky 45! Titles include "Silent Heart" by 125th Street Candy Store, "Micro Mini" and "Make Out" by Harvey Averne, "Too Much Lovin" and "So Fine" by Joe Bataan, "Willie Baby" by Willie Colon, "Soul Drummers" and "Mercy Mercy Baby" by Ray Barretto, "Geronimo" and "Funky Big Feet" by Bobby Valentin, "Mercie" by Ralph Robles, "Camel Walk" by The Latinaires, "Batola Boogaloo" by Bobby Quesada, "Grazin In The Grass" by Orchestra Harlow, "Spinning Wheel" by El Apollo Sound, "Hey Sister" by Monguito Santamaria, "Who Is The Girl For Me" and "Look At Her" by Ralfi Pagan, "New York Soul" by Ray Barretto, "Some Lonely Heart" by ronnie Marks, "Let's Get It Together This Christmas" by Harvey Averne, "Shaft" and "If I Were A King" by Joe Bataan, "Johnny's No Good" and "Blonde Latin Blues" by WRLC, and "Today" and "Try Just a Little Harder" by Butter Scotch. Lots more too – and the bonus 7" single features two promo tracks recorded for DJ Symphony Sid – one by Joe Bataan, the other by Bobby Valentin! CD

Gene Harris & The Three SoundsLive At The It Club Vol 2 ... CD
Blue Note, 1970. Used ... $13.99
Although Gene Harris and the Three Sounds sometimes were big sleepers on studio sessions, the trio could always groove nicely in a live setting – as you'll hear on this great part 2 to their Live At The It Club set! Recorded in LA in 1970, the set captures Harris at his funky best – primed with a nice hard style after a few years of working with funk maestro Monk Higgins. Higgins produced this live set, and also contributed a number of excellent funky cuts – like "Black Fox", "Down Home", "Apollo 21", and "Put On Train". Plus, the CD also features 3 great soul jazz Beatles tunes – "Come Together", "Get Back", and "Eleanor Rigby". And if that's not enough, this material was never issued until now – making the CD reissue even more essential! CD

Red River DaveAuthentic Hillbilly Ballads & Topical Songs Vol 1 – 1954 to 1976 ... LP
Omni (Australia), Late 50s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... $6.99 26.99
Over 20 years of work from one of the most enigmatic singers in the American underground – an artist who was part country, part folk – and managed to work very strongly in topical themes of the time! Red River Dave may not have cracked the charts or Nashville, but over the course of the rare singles here, he managed to deliver songs on hippie murders, Patty Hearst, the John Birch Society, Lee Harvey Oswald, Vietnam, Marilyn Monroe, The Bay Of Pigs, and the death of Emmett Till! And while topical material was no stranger to both the folk and country market, Dave's performances here really take the whole thing to the next level – shunning some of the subtlety or wit of some of his contemporaries, and really just telling it like it is – mostly just using lively guitar or banjo accompaniment. As usual with Omni, the whole thing is a treasure trove of sounds we never would have discovered otherwise – and the set's overflowing with music – 27 titles that include "Ballad Of Marilyn Monroe", "The Vietnam Guitar", "California Hippie Murders", "Flight Of Apollo 11", "Amelia Earhart's Last Flight", "Moon O'Er The Wall In East Berlin", "The Ballad Of Patty Hearst", "Searching For You Buddy", "The Red Deck Of Cards", and "I Won't Care A Hundred Years From Now".
