AntibalasFu Chronicles (with download) ... LP
Daptone, 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
Antibalas take a page from the Wu-Tang book, and add a little kung fu action to their music – with results that maybe make this set one of their freshest in years! All the core energy of the group is very firmly in place – that razor-sharp instrumentation that's made these guys one of the best funky groups on the planet for over 20 years, and which also still makes Antibalas head and shoulders above some of the groups that sprung up in their wake – and this time around, the lyrical themes are nicely expanded, so that the vocals have as much dynamic energy as the horns and Afro Funk percussion – almost with this narrative approach that furthers the message in the music. Titles include "Lai Lai", "Fight Am Finish", "Koto", "Amenawon", and "Mttt (parts 1 & 2)". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ AntibalasAntibalas (with download) ... LP
Daptone, 2012. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from one of the best funky combos anywhere – ever! Antibalas have certainly risen to fame in the years since we first heard their Afro-styled grooves – working famously in the Fela musical, and reaching generations of ears with their own brilliant records. Yet throughout it all, they've always stayed true to their sound – and, if anything, are even sharper, tighter, and funkier than before – all extremely adept not only at playing their instruments, but at hitting the right sort of sound to cut through all the BS that was holding back funky Afro grooves for years! Part of that sound comes from superb Daptone production by Gabriel Roth – who really knows how to keep things lean and mean and full of energy. But the core credit really goes to the group – who never cease to amaze us here – and continually come up with fresh sounds on their keyboards and horns – and inventive rhythms to match! Titles include "Dirty Money", "The Rat Catcher", "Ari Degbe", "Ibeji", "Sare Kon Kon", and "Him Belly No Go Sweet". LP, Vinyl record album

International Anthem, 2018. New Copy ... $9.99 14.99
A fantastic album from this groundbreaking Latin combo from Chicago – one who've got an inclusive spirit that grabs together so many different elements of music and unifies them as one! The style isn't quite salsa, isn't Latin rock or jazz – but instead has so many strands of sounds coming together at once – not colliding, but really merging and making something beautiful and new in the process – always with a sound that's proud, righteous, and very aware of its power to change! In a time of borders and boundaries, the approach is especially welcome – and it's our guess that we'll be hearing plenty from Dos Santos in years to come. The album features some guest work from the Antibalas horns, arranged by Nick Mazzarella – plus cornet from Ben LaMar Gay – on titles that include "Cordva", "Purisma", "Manos Ajenas", "How Far Are We From Here", "You Are My Revolution", "Caminante", "Logos", "Return Y Regreso", and "Acabame". Kokolo Afrobeat OrchestraFuss & Fight ... CD
Afrokings (UK), 2002. Used ... $6.99
The bold voice of a new Afro Funk ensemble – jamming hard with an intensity that matches recent work by Antibalas or The Daktaris, and which stands proudly in a tradition that runs back to Fela's best work of the 70s! The group's extremely tight, and have a good funky edge – and they've actually got a lot of jazz in their playing, especially on the sax solos, which are particularly strong. Plus, the whole thing was engineered by Gabe Roth of Daptone, so it's got a no-nonsense, all-classic sound that makes the whole thing immediately enjoyable! 6 long jammers – including "Fuss & Fight", "Donkey", "Good Noose Bad Noose", "Talk - Action = Zero", and "Watching You". Dele SosimiTurbulent Times ... CD
Ekostar (UK), 2002. Used ... $4.99
An incredible set of new Afro Funk work – very much in the best style of current groups, like Antibalas or the Afro Kings – and served up in a very classic style! Dele plays keyboards and sings lead vocals – but the album burns with the strength of the entire ensemble, a tightly-knit outfit that play with the energy and abandon of Afrika 70! Tracks are all nice and long, with lots of jazzy inflections on the instrumentation – and Dele's got a compelling style that holds the whole thing together nicely as the tracks groove along! Titles include "Turbulent Times", "Gbedu 1", "Big Cat Fat Cat", "Di Godfada", "I No Like", and "Phaze 2". CD

TicklahTicklah Vs Axelrod ... CD
Easy Star, 2007. Used ... $4.99
Ticklah mixes it up nicely here with keyboardist Victor Axelrod – a player we know from his work with Antibalas, but who moves in a very different direction here! Ticklah's production and mixing are very dub-centric – and there's a spacey, echoey vibe to most of the record – one that takes Axelrod's keyboards, and fleshes them out with a range of reggae-inspired production techniques. The record features a bit of vocals from Mike General, Tamar Kali, Mayra Vega, and others – but other tracks are all instrumental – and titles include "Two Face", "Descent", "Queen Dub", "Answer Me", "Rescue Me", "Pork Eater", "Nature Loving Dub", and "Mi Sonsito". Ahead Of Our Time (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really fantastic collaboration between Coldcut and a host of South African musicians – and a set that also features a number of key contributions from the legendary Tony Allen! The record uses the older cutup style that Coldcut first forged on the London scene of the 80s – but has lots of live musicianship from an array of jazz and percussion players, plus a variety of singers too – stretching out in this really visionary blend that includes contributions from Dele Sosimi, Tenderlonious, Tony Allen, The Watts Prophets, Nono Nkoane, Lani Sigers, Gally Ngoveni, Miles James, Antibalas, and others! The project comes off way better than most of this type – very collaborative, and with a sound that's very unified, very together, and very fresh – definitely a whole that's even greater than the sum of its parts. Titles include "Freedom Groove", "Broken Light", "Crystallise", "Papua Merdeka", "Swift Gathering", "International Love Affair", and "Future Toyi Toyi". CD
