Mike WestbrookMarching Song – An Anti-War Jazz Symphony (Marching Song Volumes 1 & 2) ... LP
Deram, 1969. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $43.99
The brilliant 3rd album from Mike Westbrook – a sharp-edged, two volume set with a scathing anti-war theme! The work is Westbrook's first total-concept album, and it's still one of his best – written with an edge that's free from some of the more whimsical touches that showed up in Mike's later years, and played by a core group of British avant soloists with searing intensity! You've never heard large group scoring like this – bold, ambitious, and quite different than most of what's come before. And although the whole thing sounds as if it's going to fall apart at any moment, it always snaps back into a sharp focus just in the nick of time – with brilliant results that bring the same sense of surprise that you might get from, say, a classic album from Charles Mingus or Archie Shepp! Players include Kenny Wheeler and Henry Lowther on trumpets, Mike Gibbs and Paul Rutherford on trombones, John Surman on baritone and soprano sax, Mike Osborne on alto and clarinet, Alan Skidmore on tenor and flute, Brian Smith on tenor, and Harry Miller and Barre Phillips on bass. This set features both volumes of the recording – with titles that include "Landscape", "Hooray", "Other World", "Marching Song", "Transition", "Rosie", "Tension", "Ballad", "Conflict", and "Requiem". ✨✧ Goblin/Asha PuthliSquadra Anti-Gangsters (colored vinyl) (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Cinevox/AMS (Italy), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the heaviest soundtracks scored by Goblin during the 70s – with lots of funky club influences, and a funky disco sound on a number of tracks that feature vocals by the great European club diva Asha Pulthi. Pulthi sings on the tracks "The Whip" and "The Sound Of Money", and there's one more track, "Welcome To The Boogie", that's got unidentified vocals – but which follows in a similar disco sort of mode! The rest of the material is mostly uptempo cop show type stuff from the era – with plenty of keyboards, wah wah guitars, and heavy rhythms – that funky mix of rock and soundtrack styles that Goblin did so well back in the day. Titles include "Trumpet's Flight", "Sicilian Samba", "Stunt Cars", and "Disco China". LP, Vinyl record album

Booker TRoad From Memphis ... CD
Anti, 2011. Used ... $3.99
The second comeback effort from Booker T Jones for Anti-! All around, it's a more sharply-honed and classics-steeped set than its solid, but more southern rock-inflected predecessor – one the finds the Stax organ titan backed by co-producers ?uestlove & Rob Schnapf, Dennis Coffey and others on the sessions, and allstar guest vocals on a few numbers! It's really well done and a worthy effort from a true giant! The heart of the album is the loosely grooving organ soul instrumentals – with a quite a bottom end wallop, thanks to ?uesto, and the incomparable Booker T in great form – but the handful of guest vocalists include Sharon Jones, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Lou Reed, Matt Berninger and Booker T himself. Titles include "Walking Papers", "Crazy", "Progress", "Down In Memphis" with Booker T on vocals, "Representing Memphis" with Sharon Jones & Matt Berninger, "The Bronx" with Lou Reed (weird, but it kinda works!), "The Vamp", "Harlem House" and "Rent Party". Bettye LavetteInterpretations – The British Rock Songbook ... CD
Anti, 2010. Used ... $6.99
Bettye Lavette's been back at the top of her game for the past few years now – almost reaching even more ears than in the 60s and 70s, thanks to sharp production and keen attention from a few generations of younger listeners! And while you might expect a set of British rock numbers to come off sounding like some sort of sellout effort, the approach is actually pretty classic overall – especially when you consider how many American soul artists of the 60s served up their own versions of songs by The Beatles, Stones, and other UK acts. As with other Lavette revival albums, production is in a very righteous mode – instrumentation and studio styles that more than live up to the richness of Bettye's great vocals – as she wails away on tunes that include "All My Love", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me", "It Don't Come Easy", "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Salt Of The Earth", and "Wish You Were Here". Also includes a great bonus – her version of "Love Reign O'er Me" from the Kennedy Center Honors performance! CD

Bettye LavetteScene Of The Crime ... CD
Anti, 2007. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The long-overdue return of Bettye Lavette to Muscle Shoals – the scene of her ill-fated album for Atlantic Records from the early 70s – hence the title of this album! The style here is certainly classic, and very old school – with backings provided by The Drive-By Truckers, whose member Patterson Hood has family ties back to the older Muscle Shoals scene of the 60s and 70s – and classic southern soul keyboardist Spooner Oldham joins the group wonderfully on electric piano for most of the record, bringing a sweetly warm style to the backings that sounds great next to the time-sharpened edges of Bettye's vocals. As with other Anti label efforts of this type, the sound is respectfully classic – no attempt made to update Lavette's style at all, and none of the cheesier bluesy material that Bettye might have been forced to sing, were she working with a lesser label. Titles include "Choices", "Jealousy", "You Don't Know Me At All", "I Still Want To Be your Baby", "Somebody Pick Up My Pieces", "Talking Old Soldiers", "Before The Money Came", and "I Guess We Shouldn't Talk About That Now". Mavis StaplesMavis Staples Live In London ... CD
Anti, 2019. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
Mavis Staples follows up her strong run of recent solo albums by a live set that's maybe even rootsier than the studio material – recorded in London with a nicely small band – which gives the music a nice sort of bite, right from the start! Guitarist Rick Holmstrom is almost an equal star in the spotlight – as his bluesy guitar licks are a big part of the album's sound, and either kick off a tune with a bold lead, or solo for a bit right in the middle. Mavis hardly needs an introduction here – given all the recent acclaim she's gotten in the press – and she does a nice job of throwing in a few surprises along the way, on titles that include "Love & Trust", "What You Gonna Do", "You Are Not Alone", "Can You Get To That", "Let's Do It Again", "Slippery People", "We're Gonna Make It", "Touch A Hand", "Dedicated", and "Who Told You That". Anti, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Mavis Staples works here in great partnership with Ben Harper – who not only produced the record, but also wrote all the songs in the set too! Yet unlike a Harper album, the vibe here is definitely focused more in the mode of Mavis – as the songs really provide her with a great platform for both her vocals and the inspired message in her music in recent years – the sorts of tracks that feel almost as if they could be older nuggets from Staples' catalog. Harper wisely steps back throughout – and only makes a guest appearance on one track – leaving Mavis and a sharp small combo to work through titles that include "Change", "Stronger", "Never Needed Anyone", "Chance On Me", "Hard To Leave", and "Heavy On My Mind". The debut of Tom Waits – a prettier, less gravelly-voiced and less knowingly seedy effort than the albums to come – and a set that's as tender as any that Waits would ever record! This is Waits in after hours yearning mode, still upright on a barstool or a piano bench, not yet having fallen in a gutter. One of his best! Includes "Ol' 55", "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You", "Midnight Lullaby", the beautiful "Martha" – which still one of his best written songs), plus "Rosie", "Lonely", "Ice Cream Man", "Closing Time", "Grapefruit Moon", and "Little Trip To Heaven". ✨✧ Curtis HardingFace Your Fear ... LP
Anti, 2017. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The cover looks a lot like a vintage soul album from the 70s – and the whole thing sounds a lot like one too – as the vocals of Curtis Harding are maybe even more wonderful here than on his debut album, and set up with these majestic grooves that are completely outta sight! The record blends deep soul, funky currents, and soaring arrangements – all with a no-nonsense, no-gimmick vibe that hardly sounds like a contemporary effort at all – and instead, much more like one of those rare times when a current producer can really get a classic sound just right! Sam Cohen mixed and produced most of the cuts here – so our hat's most likely off to him, as he's in a rare contemporary breed that might include Adrian Younge – but the strength of Harding's ability to slide right into the grooves is also a key part of the album's success, as is the really righteous quality of his songs. Titles include "Face Your Fear", "On & On", "Wednesday Morning Atonement", "Need Your Love", "Dream Girl", "Welcome To My World", "Ghost Of You", and "Need My Baby". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tom WaitsForeign Affairs (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Asylum/Anti, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the great mid 70s albums from Tom Waits in his earlier boozy, growling balladeer mode – with lots of slower, piano-led bluesy and jazzy ballads – on top of the jivey, gravelly charisma of his voice and songwriting that already had him approaching legendary status even though he was still in 20s! The mix of that gruff voice and the fairly pretty instrumentation is prime Waits from this period, making 40s, 50s and 60s-inspired songcraft as fresh as ever in the late 70s and remains so to this day. Includes "Cinny's Waltz", "Muriel", "I Never Talk To Strangers", "A Sight For Sore Eyes", "Barber Shop", Foreign Affair" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Burnt Sugar ArkestraTwentieth Anniversary Mixtapes – Groiddest Shizznits Vol 3 ... CD
Avantgroidd, 2000s/2010s. New Copy ... $12.99
A fantastic 20th anniversary celebration of Burnt Sugar – one of the most righteous, forward-thinking ensembles of the past few decades – some of the first proponents of a 21st Century sound that now seems to be flowing from many other corners! Yet these guys are still unlike anyone else we can think of – maybe a jazz ensemble at the core, but one that's keenly aware of soul, funk, and hip hop – and not afraid to allow any of those elements equal play in their music – almost as if Duke Ellington grew up in the 90s, listening to electric Miles Davis, Tribe Called Quest, and Curtis Mayfield – then found a way to expand larger musical ideas based on influences that diverse. Greg Tate founded the group, and directs with bassist Jared Michael Nickerson – and this series of three CDs is dedicated to bringing back some of the group's best work, much of which has gone out of print in recent years. Guests on this third volume include Vijay Iyer, Matana Roberts, Anti-Pop Consortium, Jeremiah Abia, and others – and titles include "God Is Black", "Black Fros Black Gold", "Young Frankenstank", "Sleep Is The Cousin Of Def", "Mack Jarrett", "Chains & Water", "The Name Is Blunt Sonny Blount", "Spartacus Free The Slaves", and "A Blood Sample From Erroll Garner". Nina HagenFearless ... LP
Columbia, 1983. Near Mint- ... $13.99
A strange and ultimately very fun set from Nina Hagen circa '83 – with production by Giorgio Morodor that's clearly geared towards an 80s mainstream club soul sound – and the record turns out to be all the weirder because of it! Nina's vocals are as anti-pop as they come, and Morodor's synthy grooves makes for a strange mix. She trys to vamp it up Blondie style on some tunes, but her punk operatic tendancies and that scary Berlin accented growl are never far behind the attempts at sweetness – and Morodor's shiny, shiny gloss and drum machines are really charming in the context! In hindsight, it was probably pretty naive to think Nina Hagen could pull off a Madonna style hit record – and that makes this one of the more fascinating miscalculations of the early 80s – and worth a listen! Titles include "New York New York", "My Sensation", "Flying Saucers", "I Love Paul", "The Change", "Silent Love", "What It Is" (featuring backing by wee little group of youngsters who call themselves The Red Hot Chili Peppers), "TV Snooze", "Springtime And Paris", "Zarah". Electric Cowbell, 2018. New Copy ... $5.99
A fantastically righteous set – a blend of funk and politics that we haven't heard done this well since the 70s – even though the whole record is aimed at dealing with contemporary issues – as you might guess from the title's reference to the late Eric Garner! The set's dedicated to Garner and other victims of brutality – and the group have a sound that's partly in the rich current of bottom-heavy funk of years back – ala Norman Whitfield's work with the Temptations, or maybe even Fuji – mixed with more contemporary elements that seem to further the contemplative aspects of some of the best songs! These guys are a perfect bridge between generations – and a great reminder that, despite the passage of decades, so many issues still haunt us today as they did decades ago. Sonic YouthEternal ... CD
Matador, 2009. Used Gatefold ... $1.99
Indie rock elders Sonic Youth's first high profile album on an indie label in about 20 years – the group's first for Matador, and a skillful mix of insistent, exciting melodic precision, barbed lyricism, random bursts of noise, and enough layered hypnotic guitar errata that you'll hear something new each time you come back to it! Through the years they continued to be pretty exciting, and for the most part managed to avoid repeating themselves, while still working in something of a comfort zone – once throwing a screwdriver in the old noise rock guitar neck with the addition of Jim O'Rourke to the group, and with O'Rourke's departure, former Pavement player Mark Ibold on bass. Kim Gordon is now freed up to be play guitar, making for a triple threat along with Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo – and it's a riveting sound. They don't reinvent the wheel on The Eternal – but they steer into adventurous waters – and as long as they're making records this good we're hoping they live up to title! Includes "Sacred Trickster", "Anti-Orgasm", "Leaky Lifeboat (For Gregory Corso)", "Antenna", "What We Know", "Calming The Snake", "Poison Arrow", "Malibu Gas Station", "Thunderclap For Bobby Pyn", "No Way", "Walkin Blue", "Massage The History". Soaring keyboards from Hiromasa Suzuki – stretched out on some longer tracks than usual, with beautiful electric elements over some great large arrangements! Suzuki plays a fair bit of electric piano on the set – and is working here with some fairly dramatic larger ensemble sounds that echo the anti-war sentiments of the tunes' titles – not really a jazz-rock style, but definitely with some of the younger, bolder energy of the time! There's a fair bit of funk in the rhythms, especially on the more upbeat tracks – and the album soars along at a pace that would have made Herbie Hancock or Chick Corea proud. Dub Store (Japan), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A second set of crucial solo work from Bunny Wailer – material that comes from the time when Bob Marley was hitting huge global success on his own, then passed away too early, and left Bunny as one of the key forces to carry on the original ideas of the Wailers trio! And actually, by that time, Bunny had already gone much deeper – stepping out with material like this, from his own Solomonic Productions imprint, which was about as deeply indie as Bob Marley was commercial – keeping things really raw, spare, and laidback on the production tip – as Bunny continued to push a very righteous agenda with some wonderful tunes of his own! There's only a bit of a hint at some of the changes in larger reggae on these tracks – maybe some longer songs that showcase the move towards 12" singles and album tracks, which actually allows for more interesting production and dubbier moments amidst the roots reggae message of the cuts. Titles include "Anti Apartheid", "Solidarity", "Arab Oil Weapon", "Solomonic Dub", "Galang So", "Riding", "Trouble Is On The Road Ahead", "Cease Fire", "Rule Dancehall", and "Love Fire". CD

A great look at the huge second wave of UK punk after the bigger labels were leaving the music behind at the end of the 70s – a bold surge of independent sounds from the underground, including a fair bit of work that was really pushing the boundaries of the music and its politics at the time! Some of these groups are strongly in the spirit of 1977, others are even more radical, and still others are maybe more rough around the edges with an agenda that's a bit hard to figure out – a bit like the way that the LA hardcore scene was changing at the time too. AntibalasAntibalas (with download) ... LP
Daptone, 2012. New Copy ... $15.99 19.99
Amazing sounds from one of the best funky combos anywhere – ever! Antibalas have certainly risen to fame in the years since we first heard their Afro-styled grooves – working famously in the Fela musical, and reaching generations of ears with their own brilliant records. Yet throughout it all, they've always stayed true to their sound – and, if anything, are even sharper, tighter, and funkier than before – all extremely adept not only at playing their instruments, but at hitting the right sort of sound to cut through all the BS that was holding back funky Afro grooves for years! Part of that sound comes from superb Daptone production by Gabriel Roth – who really knows how to keep things lean and mean and full of energy. But the core credit really goes to the group – who never cease to amaze us here – and continually come up with fresh sounds on their keyboards and horns – and inventive rhythms to match! Stunning Afro Funk from this incredible combo – as great as anything from the 70s, and maybe even better! The album's the second full length release from New York's Antibalas Liberation Orchestra – and like the first, it's an insanely wonderful batch of funk tunes that follows fiercely in the Fela tradition. Choppy guitars meet with chunky rhythms, riffing keyboards, staccato horns, and a deep commitment to rootsy production – one that keeps the sound of the record firmly in the classic mode, without any fancy remix touches of house music beats. The album's amazing – the sort you could easily pass off as a rare gem you find digging through the crates in Lagos – but it's even better than that, because these guys are young, alive, and headed to your town soon for a concert! Daptone, 2017. New Copy ... $8.99 13.98
Maybe the most searing album we've ever heard from Antibalas – a set that's completely on fire from the very first note, both musically and politically – and which burns with an intensity that seems to blow away all their previous music! Make no mistake, we've always loved these guys – but this time around, there's an urgency that really grabs us – maybe because of the political climate in which the set was recorded, or maybe just because these guys always keep growing and maturing, where so many other similar combos are just content to stick in the same territory. The lead vocals by Duke Amayo are incredible – with a righteous power that demands to be heard – and the horns are more creative and colorful than ever, with some fantastic solos on the album's very long tracks. And of course, the grooves are great – that blend of riffing guitars and percussion that Antibalas have updated from 70s Afro Funk – on titles that include the three-part "Tombstown" suite, plus "Hook & Crook" and "Gold Rush". ✨✧ Atlantic StarrRadiant ... CD
A&M/Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1980. Used ... $9.99
Radiant grooves indeed from Atlantic Starr – a group who really make things sparkle throughout this magnificent set! The group are at the height of their powers here – skirting a perfect line between mainstream soul and upbeat club – never falling too much into one style or the other, and never sounding as commercial as some of their contemporaries! There's a relaxed, easygoing feel to most of the grooves on the set – never too much fake bass, nor too many electric touches – and the vocals shift a bit from track to track, taking good advantage of singers Wayne Lewis, David Lewis, and Sharon Bryant. Titles include "When Love Calls", "Think About That", "Mystery Girl", "Under Pressure", "My Turn Now", "Does It Matter", and "Send For Me". CD

The last in a long run of 80s hits from Atlantic Starr – a group who were already moving up the soul charts before the release of the album! The set continues their move into commercial territory started a few records before, but it also shakes loose of some of the colder sounds of 80s soul – and picks up a somewhat warmer vibe on the keyboards and rhythms. Porscha Martin sings female vocals with the group, and titles include "Under Your Spell", "Love Ain't Fair", "Woman's Touch", "We're Movin Up", "My Sugar", "You Deserve The Best", and "Don't Start The Fire". This package brings together the full performance for the first time ever – not only including material from all four nights that Ray played the festival, but also bonus tracks that feature Charles on piano with other singers too. The tunes are a nice mix of the jazzier style of the last few Atlantic albums, with some of the more familiar R&B of Ray's 50s singles – and titles include "Lil Darlin", "The Story", "Georgia On My Mind", "What'd I Say", "My Bonnie", "One Mint Julep", "Hornful Soul", "Let The Good Times Roll", "Tell The Truth", "I Wonder", and "With You On My Mind". Atlantic, 1950s/1960s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $11.99
We constantly find ourselves going back and forth: do we dig the Atlantic Trane, the Impulse Trane, or the Prestige Trane sides more? They each represent significant periods in both his and jazz in general's development, and all are so burning in their own way. This nice compilation brings together some of his finest moments for Atlantic, bridging the gap between his straight ahead bop years and the outward exploratory later period, with expansive takes on standards that began to incorporate his forward looking harmonic sensibility. A dozen now-classic sides in all: "Syeeda's Flute Song", "Aisha", "Countdown", "Mr. Knight", "My Shining Hour", Blues To Bechet", "The Invisible", "My Favorite Things", "Giant Steps", "Central Park West", "Like Sonny" and "Body & Soul". Aretha FranklinAretha Franklin – The Atlantic Singles Collection 1967 to 1970 ... CD
Atlantic, Late 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $18.99 19.98
A long-overdue look at the 45rpm legacy of Aretha Franklin at Atlantic Records – a set that brings together all the great singles she cut during her early years at the label – some of which you'll know as the cornerstones of her albums from the time, others that are maybe a bit more obscure! Jerry Wexler is at the production helm on all these numbers – as the man who really helped Aretha find her special style at the label – and the cuts also feature arrangements from Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd, both studio talents who'd really help Franklin open up with a new sense of power and majesty as the 60s moved on! All tracks are presented in their tight 45rpm single mixes – and titles include "Call Me", "Spirit In The Dark", "Don't Play That Song", "Border Song", "Share Your Love With Me", "My Song", "The Weight", "See Saw", "Ain't No Way", "Think", "The House That Jack Built", "I Say A Little Prayer", "Since You've Been Gone", "Baby I Love You", "Respect", "I Never Loved A Man", "Do Right Woman", "Chain Of Fools", "Don't Play That Song", "Eleanor Rigby", "Natural Woman", "You Send Me", "Tracks Of My Tears", and "I Can't See Myself Leaving You". 2CD set features 9 more tracks than the 2LP version – with titles that include "Let It Be", "You & Me", "The Thrill Is Gone", "Pledging My Love/The Clock", "Prove It", "Dr Feelgood", and "It Ain't Fair". A straight forward, personal and reflective late career gem from the legendary NY-reared, Nashville-based songwriter! Here Gantry delivers stripped down songcraft that would've sounded right at home in the late 60s-early 70s outlaw (by which we mean outsider) songwriting scene of which he helped lay the groundwork. If ever an underappreciated singer-songwriter earned a late career storytelling session of a record, Gantry is way up high on that list, and Nashlantis doesn't disappoint. His voice and guitar are all it takes on the best stuff here, but there's some subtly surprising bits of instrumentation here and here that work really well too, as well as unfussy guest appearances by devotees like Bill Callahan and others. Includes "Life Well Lived", "Wasted", "Where's The Woman?", "The Climb", "Closer Than The Air", "Say Sorry Later", "I Cry Quietly" and more. CD

Herb Geller with Mark MurphyRhyme & Reason (Atlantic pressing) ... LP
Atlantic, 1975. Very Good+ ... $13.99
One of the most amazing albums ever cut by reedman Herb Geller – a really unique overseas session from the 70s, and quite different than his initial recordings of the 50s! Herb's working here in a cool mix of electric and acoustic modes, with a vibe that's very much in the best funky MPS style – and the set also features some excellent vocals from Mark Murphy, who sings in this spacey, stretched-out way that's some of his hippest work on record – very much at the best level of his early 70s recordings for Muse! Tracks are quite long, and very hip – with long instrumental passages which are then augmented wonderfully by the vocals. Herb himself plays tenor, alto, soprano sax, and a number of flutes – and other players include Rob Franken on Fender Rhodes and Arp, Philip Catherine on guitar, Wolfgang Schluter on vibes, Palle Mikkelborg on trumpet, and Gottfried Bottger on moog and organ! Titles include the wonderfully spacey "Space A La Mode", a nice slow electric builder – and the classic "Power Of A Smile" – plus "Sudden Senility" and "Rhyme & Reason Time" – the last of which features vocals by Earl Jordan, not Murphy. Resonance, Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $22.99 24.99
Beautiful rare work from the late 60s years of Grant Green – a time when the guitarist was giving us some of his funk classics on Blue Note, and when he really seemed to be opening up his groove! That's definitely the case here – as the tracks aren't just funky, but also spin out at nicely long lengths – first on a set of tracks recorded for radio in Paris in 1969, with Green on guitar, Larry Ridley on bass, and Don Lamond on drums – working in a trio mode with a very different vibe than Grant's earlier work. Barney Kessel joins on second guitar on the tune "I Wish You Love", and other tracks include "I don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing", "Oleo", and "Untitled Blues". The second two thirds of the record are even more unbridled – and feature long live performances from the 1970 Antibes Festival – with a cool quartet that features Claude Bartee on tenor and Clarence Parker on Hammond. All tracks are well past the 10 minute mark, most pushing 20 – and titles include two versions of "Upshot", plus "Hi Heel Sneakers" and "Hurt So Bad". CD

GryphonRaindances – The Transatlantic Recordings 1973 to 1975 ... CD
Transatlantic/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $9.99
Gryphon look like real Renaissance men on the cover – and they often sound that way, too – given that some of their instrumentation includes older woodwind instruments like the bassoon and crumhorn! Yet as the group grew, they also quickly picked up more electric elements too – yet still found a way to use these in modes that evoked a much more ancient face of England – in a style that was quite different from the straighter folk of the generation that included Pentangle or Fairport Convention, with a flavor that's maybe a bit like that of the great Jethro Tull album Songs From The Wood – although some of the later work also brings in some surprisingly strong progressive elements. This 2CD set covers the best period of the group's career – early 70s records for Transatlantic, including work from the albums Raindance, Red Queen To Gryphon Three, Gryphon, and Midnight Mushrumps – 30 track that include "Lament", "Second Spasm", "The Astrologer", "Tea Wrecks", "Juniper Suite", "Kemp's Jig", "Touch & Go", "Pastime With Good Company", "The Devil & The Farmer's Wife", "Don't Say Go", "Wallbanger", and "Down The Dog". ✨✧ Freddie HubbardArt Of Freddie Hubbard – The Atlantic Years ... LP
Atlantic, Late 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $7.99
Killer work from Freddie Hubbard – some key transitional sides for Atlantic Records, and easily some of his most soulful work ever! Freddie started out as a bopper on Blue Note, but then made a great shift at Atlantic – exploring space and sound in a really wonderful way, and opening up towards some of the killer modes you'd know from his classics on CTI. There's just a bit of electricity in the mix here, as most cuts are acoustic – but they already stretch out in some hip, spiritual styles that are really great. Titles include "For BP", "Lonely Soul", "High Blues Pressure", "Midnite Soul", "Black Soldier", Interlude I", "Echoes Of Blue", "Threnody For Sharon Tate Comment", "Spacetrack", "Leap Frog", "Up Jumped Spring", "Latina", and "On The Quee Tee". A blend of jazz funk and rawer informed grooves from Harold Alexander – and actually a step into more polished vibes thanks to some Arif Mardin arrangements and a new home at Atlantic Records! Although some of the earlier records cut by reed player Harold Alexander may have been more accurately described with the title Raw Root, this one stands up a lot better today than we remembered it! It has a pretty tight electric sound, and good Atlantic soul grooves running through it – with Alexander on flutes & saxes, Joe Boner in on keyboards, Ricard Davis on bass and Brian Beaks on drums on the bulk of it, with altered personnel on "De Black Musician" and "Lady Euphoria" (which also include vocals by Tequila). Soulful backing vocals credited to Something Different and some guitar by Junior Hanson and some spacey synth by Billy Allessi. An amazing record by Mose Allison – with some good funky tracks! The real key here is the fact that Mose plays electric piano and is working in a hip trio with Billy Cobham playing some funky and soulful drums! We don't know what kind of piano Mose is using, but on the tracks where he's playing the electric, it's got a jagged and raw kind of sound, almost recalling the one used on the Atlantic albums by Eugene McDaniels. Sure, it's not classic funky Average White Band, but the album's a great one that showcases the group's best second suit – their smooth compressed late 70s soul sound – a great evolution of their earlier groove, and one that showed them as a great mainstream soul act! The tunes are a bit mellower overall, but still have a lot of crackle and warmth – and Hamish Stuart's lost none of his vocal charm, and in fact may even sound better in a more laidback, less funky heavy setting! With the great break track "Stop The Rain" – and the cuts "When Will You Be Mine", "Please Don't Fall In Love", "Walk On By", "Feel No Fret", "Atlantic Avenue", "Ace Of Hearts", "Too Late To Cry" and "Fire Burning". Four massive albums from Average White Band – served up in one 2CD package! Feel No Fret is a great set that showcases the group's best second suit – their smooth compressed late 70s soul sound – a great evolution of their earlier groove, and one that showed them as a great mainstream soul act! Volume VIII is something of a greatest hits record by the group – one that bore the original tag "This album gives the listener a rare opportunity to taste the past and present of the Average White Band." What does that mean? Well, it means that the band only came up with 4 new songs for the record – including "Kiss Me", "Love Won't Get In The Way", "Love Gives Love Takes Away", and "Growing Pains" – all good numbers, though, and expanded here with the bonus track "Miss Sun". Shine features great later grooves from Average White Band – a real gem from the point when the group was settling nicely into a mellow soul vein! By this point, the combo wisely realized that they couldn't keep things going forever as a funky group – so they laid back and fell into their second strongest suit – the kind of mellow stepping rhythms that sparkled nicely between the bigger cuts on earlier records, produced to perfection here with a shimmeringly soulful feel! The album's got a mature feel, and the lyrics are often understated and well-balanced – no easy crossover soul or adult contemporary cliches – just the kind of warmth the band was always known best for. Titles include "Into The Night", "Our Time Has Come", "Catch Me", "For You For Love", "Help is On The Way", "If Love Only Lasts For One Night", and "Shine". Also features bonus tracks "Wasn't I Your Friend" and "Let's Go Round Again (12" version)". Cupid's In Fashion is from the early 80s, but still totally great – a record that has the Average White Band stepping along in smooth jazzy style – still with all their best 70s roots intact! The group are tight, yet still far from commercial – beautifully suited to the warmly soulful sounds they'd reached by this point – less of the hard funk of before, but in its place a mature groove that's totally great. Titles include "You Wanna Belong", "Cupid's In Fashion", "You're My Number One", "Love's A Heartache", "I Believe", and "Easier Said Than Done". CD

✨✧ Average White BandPerson To Person ... CD
Atlantic, 1976. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
Their classic double live set from the mid 70s, and as tight a batch of grooves as you'll find on their studio albums! In fact, this one might even be tighter, as it's got a good set of classic tracks performed live, with a sound that's a little bit more uptight and open than the studio versions– and which is especially freewheeling on the instrumental solos. Many tracks go for a lot longer than on the original versions – and there's a version of "Pick Up The Pieces" that runs for 18 minutes, a version of "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" that grooves for 8 minutes, a version of "School Boy Crush" that jams for 7 minutes, plus nice takes on the cuts "Cut The Cake", "Love Your Life", and "Cloudy". Average White BandPickin' Up The Pieces – The Best Of Average White Band ... CD
Rhino/Atlantic, 1970s. Used ... $7.99
One of the biggest crossover funk groups of all time – and when the smoke finally cleared, they were actually pretty darn good musicians! AWB's right up there with Kool & The Gang and Earth Wind & Fire for sheer pop 70s funkiness – and despite what you might think about a bunch of white guys noodling around like they're soul stars, you can't argue with classics like "Pick Up The Pieces", "Person To Person", "Cut The Cake", "Schoolboy Crush", "If I Ever Lose This Heaven", "Cloudy", "A Love Of Your Own", and "Work To Do" – all of which are on this set! There's a total of 18 cuts in all, and other titles include "You Got It", "Queen Of My Soul", "Got The Love", "Soul Searching", and "Your Love Is A Miracle". CD

✨✧ Average White BandSoul Searching ... CD
Atlantic, 1976. Used ... $6.99
Sublime mid 70s work from The Average White Band – and a record that really has the group deepening their groove a bit – moving past the heavier funk of their roots, into some mellower grooves that are totally great! There's a great undercurrent of jazz in some of the playing here – a real consciousness for clever changes, hip instrumental flourishes, and some other fusion-inspired moments – although all delivered with an understated quality that's mighty nice. The feel's a bit like The Headhunters on their second album, or some of the great Wayne Henderson groups on Fantasy – a great mix of jazz funk and soul that makes the record one of our favorites by the group. Titles include "Sunny Days", "Digging Deeper", "Love Your Life", "Queen Of My Soul", and the stellar mellow "A Love Of Your Own". CD

Average White BandWarmer Communications/Benny & Us ... CD
Sony, 1977/1978. Used 2CD ... $14.99
In case you don't get the joke, the title's a play on the fact that Atlantic Records had just been acquired by Warner Communications – now fully a major label at the end of the 70s! That fact doesn't stop the album from being a good one, though – and AWB work here with Arif Mardin on a set of tunes that still have a fair bit of the funky touches of earlier records, but which also go for a few mellower tunes too – of the sort that were becoming the group's strongest suit at the time. "She's A Dream" is a great example of this style – a nicely gliding number that still has a nice groove at the bottom – and while the set doesn't include any standout hits, it's still a great example of why AWB could pull off this sort of record a lot better than most of their contemporaries! Titles include "She's A Dream", "Warmer Communications", "Price Of The Dream", "Sweet & Sour", "One Look Over My Shoulder", "Your Love Is A Miracle", and "Same Feeling Different Song". On Benny & Us, Ben E King joins the Average White Band for this sweet 70s set – a killer record that not only stands as one of King's best efforts of the decade, but one that also gives the group a great new frontman! Ben's not the only singer on the record, but his presence here can definitely be felt – deepening up the grooves nicely, and giving the already-great AWB sound an even more badass feel! Titles include the classic "Star In The Ghetto", a funky remake of "What Is Soul", an earlier hit for King – plus "Keepin It To Myself", "Imagine", "Someday We'll All Be Free", "Get It Up For Love", and "The Message". AzymuthAguia Nao Come Mosca ... CD
Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $10.99 11.98
An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. The whole thing's wonderful – one of the most soulful Brazilian records of the 70s – and titles include the great cuts "Tarde", "Tamborim Cuica Ganza Berimbau", "Falcon Love Call", and "Aguia Nao Come Mosca". AzymuthLight As A Feather (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Milestone/Far Out (UK), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
One of Azymuth's best-remembered albums from their American years on Milestone – a really killer classic that beautifully blends Brazilian and American styles of fusion! There's a simple, elegant feel to these tunes that takes off nicely from the group's previous album for Atlantic in Brazil – a pushing forward of the soulful sides of their style, but with just the right blend of quirkier elements as well – one that still keeps the edge of the early years, yet helps the group reach out with a wonderfully warm sound! Most tracks are quite spare, and without any too-smooth polishing in production – and titles include the classic "Jazz Carnival", a funky fusion classic if there ever was one – plus "Light As A Feather", "Avenida Das Manguerias", "This Exists", "Partido Alto", "Dona Olimpia", "Amazonia", and "Young Embrace". Burt BacharachMake It Easy On Yourself ... CD
A&M/Elemental (Spain), 1969. New Copy ... $14.99
Fantastic work by maestro Burt Bacharach – subtle genius, and an album that offers more to us every time we listen to it! Burt's work has been recorded by many – but few ever gave it the kind of treatment that he did – as you'll hear in this brilliant array of sweeping strings, sly syncopation, and well-placed instrumental solos! The sound is breathtaking throughout – a new level of maturity and majesty for 60s instrumental pop – and the record's an enduring classic that deserves a place in every sensitive record collection. Includes the amazing cut "Pacific Coast Highway", plus great versions of other classics, like "Wanting Things", "She's Gone Away", "Knowing When To Leave", and "This Guy's In Love With You". CD

BadfingerWish You Were Here (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner/Rhino, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 21.98
The kind of overlooked, understated gem that should have put Badfinger at the top of the charts in the mid 70s – a record of impeccable songwriting, really great production, and a refinement of an earlier musical ideal that really points the way forward – all while avoiding most of the pitfalls of some of the group's UK contemporaries! There's a quality here that almost reminds us of the more straightforward elements of Wings, but with a rootsy vibe too – almost a bit like Little Feat, but definitely British in terms of the way the vocals come across. The album's overflowing with hooks, and the kinds of songs that should have been huge – and maybe that's what makes it such a treat all these many years later. Titles include "Just A Chance", "Got To Get Out Of Here", "Dennis", "No One Knows", "In The Meantime/Some Other Time", "King Of The Load", "Love Time", and "Meanwhile Back At The Ranch/Should I Smoke". LaVern BakerLaVern Baker Sings Bessie Smith ... LP
Atlantic, 1958. Good+ ... $6.99
Bessie Smith by LaVern Baker – a great blend of modes that really comes off great! Instead of sounding like a throwback blues album, the set comes across with a nice degree of contemporary class – thanks in part to a jazzy presentation that's a bit different than some of Baker's other music of the time – and which sports reeds from Sahib Shihab, tenor from Paul Quinichette, trumpet from Buck Clayton, and trombone from Jimmy Cleveland! Baker's voice is in fine form in this comfortable setting – and really works magic with tracks that include "After You've Gone", "Preaching The Blues", "Empty Bed Blues", "Back Water Blues", and "Gimme A Pigfoot". LaVern BakerPrecious Memories – LaVern Baker Sings Gospel ... LP
Atlantic, 1959. Very Good+ ... $29.99
Atlantic's great early soul singer delivers some fairly traditional tunes in her own gutsy R&B style. Precious Memories features LaVern singing 12 gospel tunes like "Didn't It Rain", "Too Close", "Without A God", "Touch Me, Lord Jesus", and "Journey To The Sky". LaVern's fine, but the real treat is the backing by Alex Bradford and his singers, one of the most soulful gospel groups of the late 50s! LP, Vinyl record album

Tabansi/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
Excellent sounds from Ojo Balingo – a Nigerian juju artist from the same stretch as King Sunny Ade – but one whose music is much more obscure to audiences on this side of the Atlantic! Balingo's group here has the loose, spontaneous vibe that characterizes juju at its best – this real sense of jamming, especially in the criss-crossing of the percussion, which is tremendous throughout – a real driving force of the music, and exploding with all these melodic elements as much as rhythmic ones – so much so, that the talking between the drums speaks volumes, even before the vocals come into the mix. The whole thing's a masterpiece of creative percussion, mixed with other elements that creep in a bit more strongly on side two – and titles include "Oba Mimo Olorun Ayo", "Ayo Igbala Ni Mofe, "Igbe Eiye Oloburo", "Jide Babaloa & Bayo Babalola", and "Ile Aiye Ile Ese Ile Aiye Ogun".
