✨✧ VariousCongregation For Anti-Flirts Inc – The McAllen Texas Teen Scene 1965 to 1967 ... CD
Cicadelic, Mid 60s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Cool 60s rock from the Lone Star State – raw garage rock and melodic gems, too from the mid 60s McAllen, TX scene in the Rio Grande Valley – featuring numbers by The Cavaliers, The Headstones, Christopher And The Souls, The Playboys Of Edinburg, Jeanne Hatfield and Brother And Sister! Most of the groups can handle both a raw, but melodic style and a much more fuzzed out, organ-drenched and propellant groove, but there's some diverse, moody twists and turns. Includes "Symbols Of Sin", "Congregation For Anti-Flirts Inc" and more by Cavaliers, "My Kind Of Girl" and "Wish She Were Mine" by The Headstones, "Diamonds, Rats And Gum" by Christopher And The Souls, "Understand Me" by Playboys Of Edinburg, "That Hurts", "Seaweed" and more by Cavaliers, "My Babe" by Jeanne Hatfield, "The Answer" by Brother And Sister and more. Betty DavisBetty Davis ... LP
Just Sunshine/Light In The Attic, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 21.98
Betty Davis was one of the nastiest ladies in 70s soul – and this is one of her greatest albums – a killer batch of funky tracks all the way through! Betty has a sound like nobody else – and she takes heavy drums, throbbing bass, and ripping guitars – all as a hard and funky backing for raunchy, raspy vocals that are belted out with a slinky, sexy sort of sound! Davis' vocals are unlike anyone else we can think of – easily some of the most badass work you'll ever find on record – and the tracks are a mix of hip themes about sex, gal power, and struttin your stuff – all delivered by a righteous woman who can definitely do just that! The album features the classic break tracks "If I'm In Luck I Might Get Picked Up" and "Steppin in Her I Miller Shoes", but every cut is a funky monster – including "Ooh Yea", "In The Meantime", "Your Man My Man", and "Anti Love Song". A great one if you dig hard female soul, heavy funky guitars, or both at the same time! LP, Vinyl record album

Tom ZeImprensa Cantada ... CD
Trama/Ultra Pop, 2003. Used ... $9.99
A mad return to form for Tom Ze – the legendary Brazilian musician who's been one of the few artists to keep the flag of Tropicalia flying over the years! The set features Tom in a number of styles – rocky, quirky, folksy, electric, and always with that mad sense of humor that makes his work so enjoyable. A few of the tunes on the set were recorded live, and there's a pronounced political nature to much of the material – a fact that's immediately apparent on the anti-war track "Companheiro Bush", but which bubbles nicely through most of the album as well. Titles include "DesenRock-se", "Dona Divergencia", "Sem Saia Sem Cera Censura", "Urgente Pela Paz", "Bate Boca", "Voce E O Mel", "Sao Sao Paulo", "Lingua Brasileira", "Vaia De Bebado Nao Vale", and "Interlagos F1". ✨✧ Lee MorganSixth Sense (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note, 1967. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful late work from Lee Morgan! The last five years of Lee's life saw him really stretching out to do some fantastic writing, playing, and leading – and this record stands today as one of the best examples of that period – a pure act of genius, with a sound that really takes off from Lee's earlier Blue Note albums. The styles are a unique blend of soulful hardbop and the more stretched-out spiritualism that would later emerge in the early 70s soul jazz scene – and players include the lesser-known Frank Mitchell on tenor, plus Jackie McLean on alto, Cedar Walton on piano, Victor Sproles on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – the last of whom provides an amazingly lyrical approach to rhythm, the sort that was key to some of Lee Morgan's best work of the time! Titles include "Afreaka", "Short Count", "The Cry Of My People", "Anti Climax", and "Psychedelic". Plus, this CD reissue also features 3 unissued bonus cuts – "Extemporaneous", "Mickey's Tune", and "Leebop"! Very nice! CD

A really excellent collection of rocksteady work on Trojan Records – material that's much more expansive than some of the more hit-based sets of this type on the market – in a way that really draws a firm line between the roots of ska and the early days of reggae! There's a lot of tracks here that aren't easy to find otherwise, mixed with others from some of the key Jamaican singers of the moment – served up in two dozen tracks that include "Revival" by Leslie Butler & The Originals Orchestra, "Right On Time" by The Sensations, "She Said She Loves Me" by The Sealmates, "Can't See You" by Ken Boothe, "Reborn" by The Maytals, "Over Again" by Stranger & Gladdy, "Be Mine" by The Rulers, "One Scotch One Bourbon One Beer" by Alfred Brown, "Miss Anti Social" by Austin Fairchild & The Hippies, "Give Me That Love" by Nehmiah Reid, "The Shadow Of Your Smile" by Tommy McCook & The Supersonics, "You've Got Something" by Ewan & Jerry, and "So Nice Like Rice" by Charley Kelly. ✨✧ VariousThose Shocking Shaking Days – Indonesian Hard Psychedelic Progressive Rock & Funk 1970 to 1978 ... LP
Now Again, 1970s. New Copy 3 LPs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A truly incredible overview of 70s Indonesian funk, rock and psychedelia infused recordings – and it's beautifully put together, to boot – one of the very best compilations yet from Stones Throw's Now Again branch! There's an undercurrent of funk to most of this material, but it's always topped off with prog & psych rhythmic heaviness and dexterity, and usually done with passionate, feverish vocals. The story of Indonesian underground music of the time is a complicated one, and one that's been hard to come by outside of the region, given the difficult political circumstances of the time. This amazing set does a tremendous service for this music. Essential! Includes "Haai" by Panbers, "Anti Gandja" by The Brims, "Bad News" by Rollies, "People" by Super Kid", "Evil War" by Shark Move, "Shake Me" by Aja, "The Promise" by Rhythm Kids, "Uang" by Duo Kribo, "Pantun Lama" by Murry Lama, "Hear Me" by Golden Wing, "Candle Light" by Beny Soebardja And Lizard and more. Vanguard/Wounded Bird, 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The mighty drummer Elvin Jones is working here with a very hip group – in a mode that's maybe a nice extension of his Blue Note material at the start of the 70s, in a style that shows that he definitely still has all of his groove! As with those records, there's a key reedman in place here – the young Steve Grossman, whose sharp lines are balanced with round basswork from David Williams, and excellent guitar from Roland Prince – who almost sets these chromatic fires along the way! There's also plenty of strong guest help – reeds from Frank Foster, Joe Farrell, and Azar Lawrence, piano from Kenny Barron, and percussion from the great Candido. Titles include "Haresah", "Someone's Rocking My Jazzboat", "Agenda", "Anti Calypso", and "My Lover". CD

✨✧ Mike WestbrookMarching Song Vol 1 ... LP
Deram/Audio Clarity (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The brilliant 3rd album from Mike Westbrook – a sharp-edged, two volume set with a scathing anti-war theme! The work is Westbrook's first total-concept album, and it's still one of his best – written with an edge that's free from some of the more whimsical touches that showed up in Mike's later years, and played by a core group of British avant soloists with searing intensity! You've never heard large group scoring like this – bold, ambitious, and quite different than most of what's come before. And although the whole thing sounds as if it's going to fall apart at any moment, it always snaps back into a sharp focus just in the nick of time – with brilliant results that bring the same sense of surprise that you might get from, say, a classic album from Charles Mingus or Archie Shepp! Players include Kenny Wheeler and Henry Lowther on trumpets, Mike Gibbs and Paul Rutherford on trombones, John Surman on baritone and soprano sax, Mike Osborne on alto and clarinet, Alan Skidmore on tenor and flute, Brian Smith on tenor, and Harry Miller and Barre Phillips on bass. Titles on this first volume include "Landscape", "Hooray", "Other World", and "Marching Song". LP, Vinyl record album

AntibalasWhere The Gods Are At Peace ... LP
Daptone, 2017. New Copy ... $14.99 17.98
Maybe the most searing album we've ever heard from Antibalas – a set that's completely on fire from the very first note, both musically and politically – and which burns with an intensity that seems to blow away all their previous music! Make no mistake, we've always loved these guys – but this time around, there's an urgency that really grabs us – maybe because of the political climate in which the set was recorded, or maybe just because these guys always keep growing and maturing, where so many other similar combos are just content to stick in the same territory. The lead vocals by Duke Amayo are incredible – with a righteous power that demands to be heard – and the horns are more creative and colorful than ever, with some fantastic solos on the album's very long tracks. And of course, the grooves are great – that blend of riffing guitars and percussion that Antibalas have updated from 70s Afro Funk – on titles that include the three-part "Tombstown" suite, plus "Hook & Crook" and "Gold Rush". Ars NovaFields Of People – The Elektra & Atlantic Recordings 1968/1969 (Ars Nova/Sunshine & Shadows) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of great albums from the overlooked Ars Nova – back to back in a single set! First up is the 1968 self-titled Ars Nova – a wonderful little set of post-folk rock – with lots of lovely baroque touches! Ars Nova were really short-lived group – known for only two rare records – but they've got a sound that perfectly sums up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here – somewhere between Love and The Byrds, with the baroque touches of the former and the best country influences of the latter – all wrapped up in earnest, honest songwriting that makes even the ambitious moments come across with surprising charm. A true lost relic, and the kind of record that should be in any late 60s cannon! Titles include "Album In Your Mind", "Pavan For My Lady", "General Clover Ends A War", "And How Am I To Know", "Fields Of People", "Automatic Love", and "Song To The City". Sunshine & Shadows is the second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". A&M/PTG (Netherlands), 1983. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A groovy little classic from Atlantic Starr – and a great example of the group's wonderfully catchy way of hitting a groove! The music's never pop, but has some captivating hooks all the way through – sweet little bits mixed in with the funky soul approach of the ensemble – made even better by the great way the vocals get traded back and forth! There's a careful approach to the whole set – a way of putting things together with a good degree of class – and definitely avoiding most of the cliches that would make a similar project sound a lot more clunky. Great stuff throughout – and titles include "Who Could Love You Better", "Second To None", "Touch A Four Leaf Clover", "Tryin", and "Island Dream". CD

Be! (Germany), 1963. New Copy ... $16.99
Sweet slices of work from a hell of a jazz festival – the 1963 Antibes performances, served up here in some incredibly hip material! The set begins with early work from pianist Dollar Brand – whose trio sounds moody and amazing on "Antibes Jam", then gets joined the great vocalist Sathima Bea Benjamin on a version of "Prelude To A Kiss". Next up is the soulful sound of tenorist Klaus Doldinger, whose group includes Ingfried Hoffmann on piano – on a sensitive reading of "Like Someone In Love", which really shows off Klaus' under-recorded ballad style. The great trombonist Eje Thelin follows – leading a quintet with Ulf Andersson on tenor and Lars Joesten on piano – on the very long "Antibes Jam". A Polish group follows with another long track – a sharp-edged take on "Well You Needn't", led by tenorist Jan Wroblewski in a quartet with Wojciech Karolak on piano. Last up is singer Sarah Vaughan – working with the Kirk Stewart Trio – on the titles "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", "Tenderly", "A Taste Of Honey", and "Bill Bailey". CD

Brides Of FunkensteinComplete Atlantic Records – Funk Or Walk/Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $15.99 18.98
A prime pair of late 70s classics on Atlantic Records from Brides Of Funkenstein – a funky female group from the P-Funk empire – back-to-back with bonus tracks! The Brides are one of George Clinton's few girl-based projects of the 70s, and a group who are markedly more funk-based than Parlet! Vocals are by the duo of Lyn Mabry and Dawn Silva – but the main sound of the set comes from the tightly crafted rhythms served up by a cast of well-known P-Funk regulars – all hitting a spaciously snapping vibe that reminds us a lot of the best energy of late 70s Parliament albums on Casablanca! The tracks on Funk Or Walk, which is on Disc 1 here, are longish, but nicely focused – with less of the disco that you might expect, and more of a slow-stepping groove overall! Titles include "Disco To Go", "War Ship To Touchante", "Just Like You", "When You're Gone", "Amorous", "Nappy", and "Birdie". 2 bonus tracks: single mixes of "Amorous" and "War Ship Touchante". Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy is tremendously soulful session – with plenty of funky Clinton touches in the mix – including rumbling basslines, raspy guitars, and a tightly focused groove that has the singers working equally with the larger group of musicians on the record. Production is by Bootsy Collins and Clinton, with horn arrangements by Fred Wesley – which makes for some great Horny Horns funk touches on most tracks! The title cut – "Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy" – runs on as a long P-Funk groove for about 15 minutes, but other tracks are shorter, and titles include "I'm Holding You Responsible", "Smoke Signals", "Party Up In Here", and "Didn't Mean To Fall In Love". The 2 Part single version of the title track is here as a bonus track. CD

Solomon BurkeKing Of Rock N Soul – The Atlantic Recordings 1962 to 1968 (3CD set) ... CD
Atlantic/Soulmusic.com (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $24.99
Essential work from the legendary Solomon Burke – one of the greatest singers to record for Atlantic Records during the 60s – and an artist we'd put right up there next to Aretha Franklin or Otis Redding! Like both of those giants, Solomon has a style that's completely his own – almost a blueprint for deep soul, southern soul, and 60s soul all together at once – never captured as well or as perfectly as during the mid 60s years he recorded for Atlantic! There's nobody like Solomon Burke during these Atlantic years – a hard-edged singer who was virtually inventing deep soul at the time – taking currents from earlier R&B years, and folding them with a brash, bold energy that was completely heartfelt – and which drew on the same sort of styles that southern soul singers would make their own a few years later – as you'll see by the dates here, Burke predates work by Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, and Wilson Pickett. The package features 3CDS, and a massive 79 tracks in all – the biggest collection of Burke's work for Atlantic that we've ever seen – with tracks that include "I'm Hanging Up My Heart For You", "Baby", "Gotta Travel On", "Peepin", "Yes I Do", "The Price", "You're Good For Me", "Beautiful Brown Eyes", "When She Touches Me", "Keep Lookin", "Woman How Do You Make Me Love You Like I Do", "Presents For Christmas", "What'd I Say", "Get Out Of My Life Woman", "This Little Ring", "It's All Right", "How Many Times", "Cry To Me", "Hard Ain't It Hard", "Mountain Of Pride", "I Feel A Sin Coming On", and lots lots more! A fantastic set – all 6 of Solomon's albums for Atlantic, plus non-LP cuts recorded for the label. CD

Black Sweat (Italy), 1976. New Copy ... $24.99
Rare 70s work from Don Cherry, and one of the most perfect realizations of his organic music concept – a quartet session recorded for Italian broadcast, with long songs that have a very spun-out, meditative vibe! Cherry's on pocket trumpet, but is way more than a horn player – as his vocalizations and spirit really guide the whole proceedings – played by a quartet that features Nana Vasconcelos on percussion, Gian Piero Pramaggiore on guitar, and Moki on tanpura! As you can imagine from the mix of instruments, there's an earthy, organic vibe to the whole set – really special sounds that come together with a natural beauty that may well make the record one of Don's most spiritual performances of the 70s – and that's really saying a lot. Titles include "Koye", "Flute Song", "Dissolution", "Nana's Solo", "Om Shanti Om", Luna Turca", and "Chenrezig". CD

Wonderfully freewheeling improvisations between a duo we've never heard before – saxophonist George Davidson and drummer Mitchell King – really pulling out some old school energy in this series of well-done free jazz duets! Davidson sometimes has a deeper current of soul in his horn, which almost evokes an earlier ESP version of avant jazz – and King has this way of building up formations on the drum kit, then setting them off in increasing intensity – which is often well-balanced by the grounded explorations of the tenor! Very nice work by a duo who follow the best sides of their inspirations – on titles that include "In Praise Of Fakirs", "Message To Eden Ango", "Aurora Vibration", "Mixed Elixer", "Madzub's Logic", and "Where Is Dhat". Stiff, 1977. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A seminal early album from Ian Dury – recorded before his funky dancefloor crossover work, and a key link between those sides and his earlier pub rock years. Dury's wonderfully deadpan vocal approach is already very firmly in place – and in fact perhaps sounds even more disaffected next to the heady guitars and stiffly strutting instrumentation of the set. Chaz Jankel's just developing his bassy style at this point – soon to explode more strongly on later work – but the core sound is very firmly in place on the set! Aretha FranklinAretha Franklin – The Atlantic Singles Collection 1967 to 1970 ... CD
Atlantic, Late 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $19.99
A long-overdue look at the 45rpm legacy of Aretha Franklin at Atlantic Records – a set that brings together all the great singles she cut during her early years at the label – some of which you'll know as the cornerstones of her albums from the time, others that are maybe a bit more obscure! Jerry Wexler is at the production helm on all these numbers – as the man who really helped Aretha find her special style at the label – and the cuts also feature arrangements from Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd, both studio talents who'd really help Franklin open up with a new sense of power and majesty as the 60s moved on! All tracks are presented in their tight 45rpm single mixes – and titles include "Call Me", "Spirit In The Dark", "Don't Play That Song", "Border Song", "Share Your Love With Me", "My Song", "The Weight", "See Saw", "Ain't No Way", "Think", "The House That Jack Built", "I Say A Little Prayer", "Since You've Been Gone", "Baby I Love You", "Respect", "I Never Loved A Man", "Do Right Woman", "Chain Of Fools", "Don't Play That Song", "Eleanor Rigby", "Natural Woman", "You Send Me", "Tracks Of My Tears", and "I Can't See Myself Leaving You". 2CD set features 9 more tracks than the 2LP version – with titles that include "Let It Be", "You & Me", "The Thrill Is Gone", "Pledging My Love/The Clock", "Prove It", "Dr Feelgood", and "It Ain't Fair". The cover may look a bit scientific – but the music is plenty soulful throughout – a package that brings together four key singles from that momentous musical year of 1968 – a time when Aretha Franklin was really finding her sound at Atlantic Records! The music here represents Aretha really stretching out from the earlier years – not just in the deep soul modes that would forever put her on the map – but also with some sophisticated touches that would forever earn her a place as the first lady of soul – as you'll hear on titles that include "My Song", "See Saw", "I Say A Little Prayer", "Since You've Been Gone", "Ain't No Way", "Think", "You Send Me", and "The House That Jack Built". Great design, too – a book-style cover, with the singles in the pages! 7-inch, Vinyl record

A sound library album from the Italian 70s scene – but one that's more like a jazz record overall, given that it's the product of musician Sandro Brugnolini, working under an assumed name – a cat who gave the world plenty of great jazz records in his day! There's a nice mix of keyboards on the set – acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes, and other keys – used in small combo modes that move between upbeat groovers, jazz dance numbers, and a few mellower moments – a really well-rounded record that also has some nice guitar work in the group too! A fantastic collection of cross-cultural grooves from Daniel Haaksman – the man who first raised our ears with his excellent Rio Baile Funk Favela Booty Beats compilations – then kept on giving us great music during all the years in between! This set has Haaksman providing his own edits of tracks that have a fair bit of global elements in the mix – contemporary club, but rife with acoustic, organic sound styles – which are further expanded by Daniel in his thoughtful edits throughout the entire set! There's plenty here for the dancefloor, but also a deeper cultural mission at hand – on tracks that include Haacksman edits of "Akabongi" by Soul Brothers, "Vamos Farrear" by Pinduca, "Morbiyassa" by Kaba Blon, "Cazukuta" by DJ Havaiana, "Sunny Crypt" by Francis Bebey, "Me Gritaron Negra" by Victoria Santa Cruz, "Dissan Na M'Bera" by Super Mama Djombo, and "Black September" by Master Chivero. Rufus HarleyCourage – The Complete Atlantic Recordings ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino Handmade, Late 60s. Used 2 CDs ... $24.99
A treasure trove of music from one of the hippest jazz players ever – the legendary Rufus Harley, a saxophonist by trade, but one who could also play the bagpipes as well! Harley had a really unique way of using the bagpipes as a free-flowing modal soloing instrument – one that's clearly influenced by the best work of John Coltrane in the early 60s, and which really takes the instrument back to its original pre-Scottish roots in Africa! This wonderful set brings together 4 of Harley's best albums ever – Bagpipe Blues, Tribute To Courage, Kings/Queens, and Scotch & Soul – all gems recorded for Atlantic Records in the 60s, and which are presented here with 2 bonus tracks as well! Harley plays both bagpipes and saxophone on the record – the latter in a way that's equally compelling as the former – and the 2CD set features a whopping 28 tracks in all, supported by liner notes and other details. Titles include "Ali", "Where Have All The Flowers Gone", "Pipin The Blues", "Sufur", "Scotch & Soul", "Feeling Good", "Taurus The 20th", "Bagpipe Blues", "Kerry Dancers", "More", "Sunny", "A Tribute To Courage", "About Trane", "Eight Miles High", and "Love Is Blue". A Kostis (Constantinos Kostas Bezos)Jail's A Fine School ... LP
Mississippi, 1930/1931. New Copy ... $13.99
Beautifully folksy work from pre-war Greece – a series of 78s from Constantinos Bezos, not only a musician, but also a journalist and actor too – and reportedly one with a very political wit! That wit comes through in the title of the collection – but might not in the lyrics to all the tunes, unless you understand Greek – but that's more than OK, because the guitar work is equally wonderful – often on this steel-stringed version that has a very resonant quality, and which rings out in these cyclical ways that are really beautiful – almost prefacing a Robbie Basho sort of style, and played in ways that perhaps are linked to other Greek stringed instruments. The package features a very hefty booklet of notes – and the translations of the song titles get at the spirit of the record – and include "A School Was Burned", "Yannis The Hash Smoker", "I Became Thin", "You Were Barefoot", and "The Jail's A Fine School". Barbara LewisDon't Forget About Me – The Atlantic & Reprise Recordings (3CD set) ... CD
Atlantic/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1960s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
Damn fantastic work from Barbara Lewis – one of our favorite soul singers of the 60s, and an artist who's a bit unlike anyone else! Lewis hails from the Detroit area, but also did a fair bit of early recording in Chicago – and in a way, her sound is maybe a mix of the class of Motown with some of the sophistication that was coming into the Chess Records soul work as the 60s moved on – both modes that Lewis held together perfectly, and with a quality that was years ahead of her time! On these sides, Barbara can be groovy, but never silly – open with her emotions, but never imprisoned by them – often working with the best arrangers of the time, like Arif Mardin or Riley Hampton – and even getting backing support from members of The Dells on a number of cuts. The set is amazing – six full albums' worth of material recorded for Atlantic, plus lots of non-album tracks and b-sides, one unreleased track, and two sides from a very obscure Reprise Records single in 1973. There's never been a collection of Lewis' work like this – a massive 68 track package, with details on all the sessions, and superb sound throughout! CD

Atlantic/Real Gone, Late 60s. New Copy ... $17.99 18.98
The first-ever set to bring together all of Barbara Lynn's records for Atlantic – including her full album, a host of rare singles, and even one previously unissued track! Lynn's a real standout in 60s soul music – a singer with a style that's as deep and personal as any of the best southern soul artists of the time, but also a way of putting over a tune that's maybe even more forthright and confident – partly because Barbara composed a good deal of her own material! A good deal of the work was produced by Huey P Meux in Mississippi – with a vibe that's both different from more familiar southern styles of the time, and even some of Huey's later material in the 70s – one more quality that really makes the work sound quite fresh. A few more tracks were recorded by the great Spooner Oldham – who brings in some sweet Muscle Shoals elements – and titles include the unreleased "Soul Deep", plus "This Is The Thanks I Get", "Ring Telephone Ring", "Mix It Up Baby", "He Ain't Gonna Do right", "You Make Me So Hot", "It Ain't Good To Be Too Good", "You'd Better Quit It", "I'm A One Man Woman", "I'll Suffer", and "Unloved Unwanted Me". Esther PhillipsBrand New Day – The Lenox, Atlantic, & Roulette Recordings (5CD set) ... CD
Atlantic/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1960s. New Copy 5CD ... $32.99
A fantastic collection of work from the legendary Esther Phillips – one of the most distinct voices in soul music, captured here during some key moments in her career! The box is huge – and begins with a full CD of tracks from Esther's initial years on Lenox Records – a label that helped her mature from "Little Esther Phillips", as a girl R&B singer in the 50s – to the much more mature artist she'd become on CTI/Kudu in the 70s! The set features 20 Lenox tracks – the first a stunning set of country soul material that makes Esther one of the first female artists to take on the work, followed by rare singles and a few duets with Big Al Downing. Next are 77 more tracks from Phillips' years at Atlantic Records – material that initially takes off from the Lenox material, then moves into a really great range of styles – sometimes jazzy and sophisticated, sometimes rootsy and bluesy, sometimes a bit more deep soul too – including some live material that really shows the power she could pack at the time. In between the Atlantic cuts, are also nestled 6 more numbers recorded for Roulette Records in 1969 – especially rare tracks that have a slightly different approach – and which are a key part of the set here, along with some other unreleased material. Stunning – the first time Esther's ever gotten such wonderful treatment – a big box set with detained notes too! CD

Astor Piazzolla takes on tango themes from the romantic era – but he explodes the music in the process, and fills it in with all these weird and wonderful modern elements that you never would have heard on the original Argentine singles! Piazzolla's own bandoneon is fantastic – a generator of sounds that few others could produce on the instrument – mixed with new arrangements that provide all sorts of dynamic, dramatic energy to the tunes – which really takes them wonderfully far from their roots, and puts them firmly in the territory of what you'd expect from an Astor Piazzolla album. Titles include "Griseta", "Pampero", "La Revancha", "Noche De Amor", "Recuerdo", "Los Mareados", and "En La Sombra". Will's at the helm and handles most instruments – but there's also guest vocals from Aspects, EQ, and Allice Russell – the last of whom was just at the start of her mighty run, and really gains plenty by matching up with the funky Quantic style of production! There's a lot more tuneful, catchy moments than before – and titles include "Off The Beaten Track", "Sweet Calling", "Primate Boogaloo", "Apricot Morning", "Search The Heavens", "Brand New Watusi", "Transatlantic", and "Blackstone Rock". Tru Thoughts (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (pic cover)... Just Sold Out!
A masterpiece from Will "Quantic" Holland – an artist who always surprises us with new sounds, but really blows us away with the depth in this set! Quantic started out groovy, then got funky and soulful, then embraced a range of Latin cultures in later work – and throughout that long musical journey, he's never failed to keep on growing – always stepping forward towards new sonic horizons, rather than be content to serve up the same sounds that got him attention in the first place! Subtle strings are added to beats (both acoustic and electric), keyboards, and just the right use of vocals from Nidia Gongora, Alice Russell, Denita Odigie, and Holland himself – so that the album's got this balance between instrumental activity and lyrical passages – the shifting voices never taking the spotlight away from the larger musical vision that Quantic uses to guide the whole proceedings. Sly5thAve also adds in some great work – and titles include "Tierra Mama", "Incendium", "Divergence", "Is it Your Intention", "La Reflexion", "Orquidea", "September Blues", and "Now Or Never". One of the hardest-jamming Return To Forever albums – recorded with the post-Brazilian lineup that includes Chick Corea on keyboards, Stanley Clarke on bass, Lenny White on percussion, and Al DiMeola on guitars. Corea's very firmly in the lead – stretching out in heavy keyboard romps that really take off into space – propelled by fierce drums from White, heavy bass from Clarke, and a bit of tippling guitar from DiMeola. We kind of miss the subtlety of Airto's percussion, and the beautiful vocals of Flora – but the overall sound's still pretty wonderful and we do like the spaced-out keyboard touches! An American film – directed by Billy Wilder and starring Jack Lemmon – but one with a distinctly Italian-styled soundtrack, thanks to the music of Carlo Rustichelli! Rustichelli scores the film with a style that's quite like his early 60s work for Italian films – warmly romantic, with some nice old school touches – all served up in a nice blend of light strings, easygoing rhythms, and some moody touches on keyboards that almost feel like theremin! Tracks are mostly short, some of them sprightly – to fit the comedic mood – and a few have some more traditionally Italian themes too. Santiago (Neftali Santiago)22 Somerset Drive – 1976 to 1978 ... CD
Manufactured, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $11.99
Never-heard work from drummer Neftali Santiago – one of the founding forces of legendary funk group Mandrill – working here alone in the mid 70s, during a time when he was taking a break from the group! The music is fantastic – the best sort of 70s funk ensemble mode – maybe in the manner of Fatback Band on their earliest records, especially in the sharpness of the basslines and drums – mixed with some of that warmer, more spiritual glow that you'd find on the first two Mandrill albums for Polydor. Neftali sings on many cuts, but also really kicks it out of the park with his work on drums – heading up a few different groups here, with instrumentation that includes sax, flute, clavinet, and even a bit of minimoog. These are all unreleased tracks, but they've got a very fully-formed sound – and the whole album is a great testament to Santiago's genius, in a way that really has us underscoring his contributions to Mandrill! Titles include "Land Of The Leaping No No", "Feelin Good", "Bionic Funk", "Alone Together", "Freakin", "To & From Gamma 4", "Set It Free", "Let Out Your Beats", and "Everybody Hears But Nobody Listens". BYG/Charly (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $18.99 19.98
A seminal live set from tenorist Archie Shepp – and some of his freest, least-structured material ever! Shepp's still a righteous force here on his horn, but there also seems to be equal emphasis on the contributions of all members of the group – woven together in a really rich tapestry of sound, but with less of the structuring righteous concepts of some of Archie's other work – especially his sides for Impulse. Shepp had really been experiencing some new freedoms on the French scene of the late 60s – even more so than in the US avant outfield – and you can definitely hear him taking flight here, with a like-minded group of players that includes Clifford Thornton on trombone and shenai, Alan Shorter on flugelhorn, Joseph Dujean on guitar, Beb Guerin on bass, and Claud Delcloo on drums. This first part of the live set features one long track – "The Early Bird" – a slow building number that goes increasingly outside as it progresses, featuring some very over the top solo work from Shepp, who also plays a bit of piano on the set! Piano returns on "Huru" – another long track that has Shepp laying down these beautiful blocky passages that are surprisingly personal amidst the freer energy of the group. Great package – with heavy book-styled cover, new notes, and lots of photos! CD

Fantastic work from the second chapter of The Spinners – the moment when the group departed Motown, moved to Atlantic, and got some superb Philly soul treatment at the hands of Thom Bell! Dusty Springfield on Atlantic Records – a match made in heaven, and one that's presented here perfectly in a batch of two dozen tracks that are all served up in their original mono mixes for 45rpm seven inch singles! Dusty had already been one of the most soulful singers on the UK scene in the 60s – and her Philips recordings are real favorites of ours – but when she moved to Atlantic, the label gave her some key soul-based backings – in Memphis, Philly, and Muscle Shoals – plus some great New York sessions too. Dancer and pop soul sensation Jermaine Stewart's bright, thumping and 80s dancefoor R&B that busted out huge on the pop charts for a moment! Jermaine was a dancer on Soul Train and background singer before busting out with some catchy R&B hits and the massive pop smash "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off". It's a fun record, and it's interesting to listen to the very 80s sound all these later, after its time in the dark outdated pop shadows, before it became a celebrated influence of the hippest post millennium DJs. Cultural chin-scratching aside, it's a straight up catchy, appealing album from a very talented Jermaine Stewart. Titles include the huge 80s emblem "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off" plus "Dance Floor", "Jody", "Versatile", "Frantic Romantic", "Don't Ever Leave Me", "Out To Punish", "Give Your Love To Me" and "The Word Is Out". This UK CD on Cherry Pop has 5 bonus tracks: "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off (Special Extended Version)", "Brilliance", "The Word Is Out (West Mix – Extended Mix)", "Jody (Dance Version)" and "Dance Floor (Extended Version)". Sulu & ExcelsiorAntimatter Suite ... CD
Sulu & Excelsior, 2019. New Copy ... $4.99
A sweet set from Sulu & Excelsior – essentially the solo project of singer, rapper and trumpet player Steven "Sulu" Mallorca despite the sprawling sound and stylistic breadth – with influences that stretch from classic Motown, to late 60s funk, to live horn-backed hip hop and the skills to fuse them seamlessly! Sulu is a soulful singer and solid MC, often doing both in single rap, and handles most of the instrumentation – from the beats, to piano & keys, to horns, with guests on vocals, bass and guitar on just a handful of tunes – all the more impressive given the full band vibe you get here. lncludes "My Own Volition", "You Don't Mind Me Sayin' That", "Find Another" with Hiro-A-Key, "Antimatter", "Lady Libby", "Mad Dog Magic", "Equilibrium", "Space Suit", "Silver Fox", "Gratitude", "Hate To See You Go". Alexa TarantinoClarity ... CD
Posi tone, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
A fantastic step forward for saxophonist Alexa Tarantino – a set that really shows all her strengths as a soloist, songwriter, and a leader – a record that should have the rest of the world finally taking notice of her talents! Alexa's already a great saxophonist – working here on both soprano and alto, the latter of which she uses especially well, with well-crafted, thoughtful solos that are full of soul – and she also blows a bit of flute and alto flute on the record, really deepening the color palette, and keeping things interesting throughout! The rest of the group is great, too – with Steven Feifke on piano and a bit of Fender Rhodes, Joe Martin on bass, and the great Rudy Royston on drums – all swinging along effortlessly, and with plenty of soul throughout. Titles include the Tarantino originals "Through", "A Race Against Yourself", "A Unified Front", and "Thank You For Your Silence" – plus a nice take on the Horace Silver tune "Gregory Is Here". CD

Alexa TarantinoWinds Of Change ... CD
Posi tone, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
The first we've heard as a leader from saxophonist Alexa Tarantino – a great talent who's really been bubbling under on other ensemble records for the Posi-Tone label, and who's very much at the start of a great career of her own! Alexa plays some mighty nice soprano sax on the album – plus tenor and flute – all with this nice sense of edge in her tone, mixed with a more forward-moving flow – this subtle quality that really keeps things interesting, and which has us held surprisingly rapt whenever one of her horns stretches out in a solo. Most tunes are originals, with this fresh sense of timing that really works with her tone – and the rest of the group features Christian Sands on piano, Joe Martin on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums – and a few tracks also feature trombone from Nick Finzer. Titles include "Wisp After Wisp", "Breeze", "Face Value", "Seesaw", "Without", "Ready Or Not", "Zingaro", and "Square One". CD

✨✧ Territory Band (with Ken Vandermark)Transatlantic Bridge ... CD
Okka Disk, 2000. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
The fantastic first record from Chicago's Territory Band – a project headed up by saxophonist Ken Vandermark, and one that definitely builds the Transatlantic Bridge that's promised by the title! During the second half of the 90s, the Chicago avant scene really exploded with some great younger players – and also drew a lot of guests from other global scenes too – creating a lively cross-breeding of sounds, styles, and ideas – all of which are represented strongly by this group! The lineup features Jim Baker on piano, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Axel Dorner on trumpet, Dave Rempis on alto and tenor, Kent Kessler on bass, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, and both Paul Lytton and Tim Mulvenna play drums – which makes for a super heavy sense of energy throughout. Vandermark blows tenor, bass clarinet, and b flat clarinet – on titles that include "Collage (for Kurt Schwitters)", "RM (for Marcel Duchamp)", "Mobile (for Alexander Calder)", and "Stabile (for Hans Hoffmann)". Carla ThomasLet Me Be Good To You – The Atlantic & Stax Recordings 1960 to 1968 (4CD set) ... CD
Stax/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1960s. New Copy 4 CDs ... $34.99
A long-overdue collection of the wealth of work that Carla Thomas did for Stax Records in the 60s – the wonderfully rich first section of her career, when the label was working in strong partnership with Atlantic Records! Carla's the daughter of Memphis soul legend Rufus Thomas – who first brought her to Stax, and helped launch her career – yet right from the start, it was clear that the younger Thomas was a star waiting to shine on her own – one of the first deep soul divas of the 60s to also showcase a strength for more sophisticated styles too – a bit like the blend that Aretha Franklin was recording at Columbia before moving to Atlantic – territory that Carla Thomas clearly held first in the heart of the label! The box brings together 94 tracks in all – a huge amount of Stax material, including all her duets with Otis Redding and Rufus Thomas – plus singles and b-sides too – all with a great presentation and a huge booklet of notes. Titles include "Let Me Be Good To You (live)", "Let It Be Me", "Night Time Is The Right Time", "What Have You Got To Offer Me", "Never Let You Go", "It Takes Two", "Knock On Wood", "Fate", "Looking Back", "For You", "I Didn't Believe", "The Puppet", "What A Fool I've Been", "The Life I Live", "I Fall To Pieces", "Winter Snow", "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby", "No Time To Lose", "How Do You Quit", and lots lots more! Piero UmilianiRomantic Side ... CD
Rambling (Japan), Late 60s. New Copy ... $32.99
Don't think "romance" – at least not in the sleepy sort of American romance music from the 60s – and think "groovy" instead, and maybe a bit of "sexy" too – as these tunes are pure cinematic gems from Italian composer Piero Umiliani! Like the other volume in this series, this set features some unreleased material, and new remastering for all the cuts – but the best thing is the way that all these tracks from different films work together so wonderfully – with sweet bossa rhythms, nice jazzy moments, and some of those moments of sonic genius that always made Umiliani way more than just a musician. 20 tracks in all – with work done for films that include Il Comandante, Tutto Il Bello Dell'Uomo, Io Tigro Tu Tigri Egli Tigra, La Soldatessa, Colpo Gobbo All'Italiano, Extraconiugale, and La Celestina. ✨✧ Aaly/DKV Double TrioDouble Or Nothing ... CD
Okka Disk, 2002. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
Two important improvising trios come together head to head in the transatlantic brilliance of Okka Disk Records in the 90s – recorded in a very unusual way that lets you clearly hear all the contributions of the members of the group! In the left channel stands AALY – a searing lineup of Mats Gustafsson on alto and tenor, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, and Kjell Nordeson on drums – and in the right channel stands DKV, with Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – a mighty meeting of musicians who are really at the top of their improvising game! Rather than come on head-to-head, it's amazing to hear the way that these well-matched trios open up to each other – especially the bassists and drummers, who are maybe less familiar in this setting than Vandermark and Gustafsson, who were an instantly amazing musical pair. The set begins with the original "Left To Right", then the group makes real magic over the course of 51 minutes, in a piece that offers variations on Albert Ayler's "Angels" and Don Cherry's "Awake Nu". Barbara AcklinSomeone Else's Arms ... LP
Brunswick, 1970. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Beautiful, beautiful Chicago soul from one of the women who did it best – the always-amazing Barbara Acklin, a singer who managed to mix the raw and the smooth in a really unique way! The record's a mix of some sweet originals, plus covers that Barbara handles with her usual poise and class – and it includes the hit title single, "Someone Else's Arms", and a bunch of other originals, including our favorite, "He's Just a Little Guy", plus "After You", "Is It Me", and "More Ways Than One". The record has a totally sweet Chicago production by Eugene Record (Barbara's romantic interest, and frequent collaborator), and arrangements by Willie Henderson and Tom Tom Washington – a team who really help knock the album over the top, with top shelf studio work throughout. A classic bit of Chicago soul on Brunswick, and a key chapter in Barbara Acklin's career! LP, Vinyl record album

Act One (Act 1)Act One ... LP
Spring, 1974. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
An obscure soul group, but a great one – equally at home with a fragile harmony tune as they were with more uptempo groovers for the dancefloor! This one and only album from Act One is a perfect illustration of the best two sides of the east coast indie soul scene of the early 70s – because some tunes are spare, simple, and heartbreaking – really building off the best qualities of 60s harmony soul, but with a lot more sophistication – while others are bolder, more upbeat, and positive – really using the new studio modes of the time to send a few tunes really over the top! The mix is quite similar to Black Ivory at their best – although the album's more under-discovered treasure – and although it's the only record ever by the group, it's got a solidity that should have made them as big as any of the 70s stars on Atlantic or Philly International! Titles include "Goodbye Love", "Friends Or Lovers", "Tom the Peeper", "Party Hardy People", "I Don't Want To Know What You Do To Me", "Still Waters", "It's The Same Old Story", and "Love's Got Your Mind". The setting here is a live one, and Mose is playing with a trio that includes Clyde Flowers on bass and Eddie Charlton on drums. The album features a number of strong originals – including "Look What You Made Me Do", "Powerhouse", "I Don't Worry About A Thing", and "Don't Forget To Smile" – plus versions of "The Seventh Son" and "Fool's Paradise". Atlantic, 1966. Near Mint- ... $16.99
Great 60s work from Mose Allison – a key record cut at that time when his influence was being felt strongly on the other side of the Atlantic – by younger London singers like Georgie Fame and Zoot Money! Mose is almost answering back with this great little record – hitting things with a sharp punch, and a nice undercurrent of soul and R&B – always in that New Orleans-informed groove, with loads of wonderful self-penned lyrics that really make the set sparkle! Allison's piano is plenty strong in the lead, and the album features the unlikely rhythm team of Earl May on bass and Paul Motian on drums – adding in some interesting changes on titles that include "War Horse", "Wild Man On The Loose", "Power House", "Night Watch", and "No Trouble Living". Trombonist Clifton Anderson always makes us wait way too long between his albums as a leader – but each of his sets is definitely worth the anticipation, and seems to push Clifton's music forward a fair bit more than before! This album's a gem through and through – all original music, save one Bacharach tune – played with a core group that includes Stephen Scott on piano, Buster Williams on bass and either Ronnie Burrage or Al Foster on drums – but open to a shifting array of players who include Peter Bernstein on guitar, Antoine Roney on soprano and tenor, Rene McLean on tenor, and Victor See Yuen on percussion – players who open things up past Anderson's already-great phrasing on the trombone, which is especially striking on a few tunes that feature some less conventional instrumentation. Titles include "Nana D", "Mission Statement", "TUBC", "Sista Gemini", "Sonny Says", "Been Down This Road Before", and "Mysticancients". CD

Pier AngeliItalia ... LP
Roulette, 1959. Very Good ... $8.99
The debut album from Pier Angeli – equally known for her acting ability as well as her singing – and working here in a swinging late 50s American take on the sound of Italian pop! Pier was married to singer Vic Damone, and while his style's perhaps a bit fuller and more emotive than hers, there's a good degree of comparison – as Pier's working here to please the imagined Italy of the American audiences in the years when things settled down after World War 2 – singing in Italian throughout to a nice set of backings from Hugo & Luigi. Most of the album's in a lush, romantic mode that's in keeping with other Roulette vocal sessions of the late 50s – save for the fact that the language is Italian, not English! Titles include "Volare", "Anema E Core", "Nu Quarto E Luna", "Torero", "Arrividerci Roma", and "Suvenir D'Italie". LP, Vinyl record album

Assembled MultitudeAssembled Multitude ... LP
Atco, 1970. Very Good+ ... $1.99
One of the stranger albums on Atlantic at the start of the 70s – but a surprising hit as well! The group are a batch of Philly studio players who serve up instrumental versions of late 60s rock numbers, plus some of their own bits – all recording at the Sigma Sound studios, with arrangements from Richard Rome and Tom Sellers! It's our guess that some of the players are names we'd recognize from later 70s Philly soul – but here, they're working in a unique space that's partly fuzz instrumental, partly a bit more sensitive too – renditions that go way past the usual "let's remake the hits" style of other records, thanks to the arrangements. Titles include "Overture From Tommy", "Ohio", "Where The Woodbine Twineth", "Woodstock", "Mr Peppercorn", "Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa", and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". LP, Vinyl record album

AutumnArrival ... LP
Compleat, 1984. Very Good ... $7.99
An obscure group that we only know from this album, but one who's got some top-shelf production by 70s soul maestro Skip Scarborough, working here in more of an 80s styled blend of beats and keyboards! The style's a fair bit like more mainstream work on labels like Capitol and Atlantic – tight bass pushing most tracks along in a highly rhythmic mode, while keyboards and drum machine bookend the grooves, but allow plenty of space for the vocals! The group get a bit mainstream funky at times, but kick back more nicely at others – letting their softer vocals echo out with a sweeter style than you might expect. Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio.
