Fred Anderson QuartetBirdhouse ... CD
Okka Disk, 1996. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
The first new studio recording by tenorist Fred Anderson since 1980 – and a set that shows just how much he'd grown in the intervening years! Here, Fred's newly alive with a younger Chicago group – a great quartet with Jim Baker on piano, Harrison Baker on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – all players openly fluid to move with Anderson from swinging passages to freer ones – a beautiful balance of soul and experimentation, captured in a way that maybe links Fred more closely to Von Freeman than any other record in his career – yet which still captures all the AACM vitality in his music too. Titles include "Birdhouse", "Bernice", "Like Sonny", and "Waiting For Me". CD

✨✧ Laurie AndersonBig Science ... LP
Warner, 1982. Near Mint- ... $9.99
One of the greatest albums to come from the New York underground of the early 80s – even if it was a relatively big "hit" on a major label! Laurie Anderson is in perfect form here – drawing on a strong tradition of avant garde performance, but without any of the indulgences that would mire down performance art in years to come. Instead, she's got a clean, clear style that's simply amazing – spoken passages that are poetic and pointed, but which also have a slight undercurrent of wit – a charming quality that never takes itself too seriously, even when the sounds and styles are somewhat dark. Instrumentation includes some great rhythm passages from David Van Tieghem, plus surprising performances from Rufus Harley on bagpipes and George Lewis on trombone. Titles include "From The Air", "Big Science", "O Superman", "Born Never Asked", "Walking & Falling", "Example #22", "Let X = X", and "It Tango". LP, Vinyl record album

A funky rare one from Vicki – the girl who always seemed to give the "answer" to James Brown's hits! "Answer To Mother Popcorn" is a killer groove that follows the groove of James' hit – but which has Vicki bad-rapping her own lyrics, shouting out about how tuff she is and how she's got a mother of her own! "Work It Out" is a nice number too – but mellow and bluesy. 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Fred Anderson & Steve McCallVintage Duets – Chicago 1/11/80 ... CD
Okka Disk, 1980. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing recording finally sees the light of day – a beautiful set of duets between Fred Anderson on tenor and Steve McCall on percussion – both very important players of the second wave of AACM musicians in the 70s, even though both artists never fully got their due! The material was recorded in 1980, not too long before we lost McCall – and the interplay is wonderful, and really represents a shift in the energy of the AACM scene – maybe some influence from the loft jazz world of mid 70s New York, which in turn drew inspiration from late 60s Chicago – but also delivered with a sense of soul that marks Anderson as part of a key lineage of Chicago tenorists that includes Clifford Jordan, Johnny Griffin, and John Gilmore! McCall is great too – a sensitive soul, but a strong force throughout – as the duo improvise on two long tracks, "Within" and "Wandering". CD

✨✧ Fred Anderson TrioLive At The Velvet Lounge ... CD
Okka Disk, 1999. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great set from AACM legend – tenorist Fred Anderson – cut in the very familiar home territory of his Velvet Lounge in Chicago! Anderson had been tending bar and leading jam sessions at the tavern since his return from Europe in the early 80s – but ended up purchasing the venue towards the end of the next decade – and quickly turned it into one of the real hotspots for the rising Chicago avant garde! This classic live set features Anderson caught in his home turf, in the company of bassist Peter Kowald and drummer Hamid Drake – prime example of the kind of local/international crossover sets that were really shaking the Chicago scene in the 90s. The set features 3 long tracks – "Straight, But Not Straight", "To Those Who Know", and "Multidimensional Reality". CD

Cinematic hip hop soul from Anderson.Paak named after a seaside city west of Los Angeles, CA – but it's not Malibu, it's the stunning follow up Oxnard – a little looser, more diverse, and ultimately just as impressive set from this still rising talent! The uber-impressive guest list including Kadhja Bonet, Norelle, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop, Dre, Pusha T, J Cole, Q-Tip and more but this is the sprawling Anderson.Paak show all the way, his distinctive blend of Cali sunshine and nighttime music and mood, his gritty-smooth voice so masterfully going back & forth from singing to rhyming, the production breathtaking from the stripped down beats, bass and vocals focused tracks to grander and more densely layered material. Includes "The Chase" with Kadja Bonet, "Headlow" feat Lowrell, "Tints" feat Kendrick Lamar, "Who R U", "6 Summers", "Saviers Road", "Smile/Petty", "Mansa Musa", "Brothers Keeper" feat Pusha T, "Anywhere" feat Snoop Dogg & Last Artful Dodgr, "Trippy" feat J Cole and "Cheers" feat Q-Tip – plus the bonus tracks "Sweet Chick" feat BJ The Chicago Kid and "Left To Right". ✨✧ Marilyn Crispell/Fred Anderson/Hamid DrakeDestiny ... CD
Okka Disk, 1995. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A hell of a set from the comeback years of tenorist Fred Anderson on record – a date that has Fred on tenor with familiar drummer Hamid Drake – joining pianist Marilyn Crispell during a special live performance on a visit to Chicago! The set's very much in the Crispell mode – produced and presented in a manner that's more like some of her records than Fred's – and the freewheeling piano work of the legend really seems to push Anderson on to even bolder moments than some of his other records from the time, but always balanced with the kind of sensitivity that makes him so great, easily echoed by Drake's work on percussion – and balanced out with that sense of space that has always kept us interested in Crispell's music over the decades. The album features six numbered pieces, each titled "Destiny". CD

✨✧ Fred AndersonFred Anderson Quartet – Live Vol 5 ... CD
FPE, 1994. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic live document of the genius of Chicago tenorist Fred Anderson – captured here with an excellent group that soar with the same boundless energy as their leader! Anderson is blowing at his very own Velvet Lounge club on the south side of the city – but he's hardly laidback and relaxed – as the energy here is beautifully tight, even as the songs are very freewheeling and stretched out – driven with great rhythm work by Tatsu Aoki on bass and Hamid Drake on drums, and topped with tremendous trumpet from guest Toshinori Kondo, who also adds in some great electronics too! Anderson is amazing – very much at that level that made him one of the great under-discovered giants on the Chicago scene, finally getting attention during this period of his career – and beautifully brought to life again on this recording that finally sees release twenty five years after its recording. Titles include "Analog Breakdown", "Era Of Rocks", and "Probability Distribution". CD

Tenorist Fred Anderson made some fantastic albums for the Okka Disk label during the later years of his life – and this wonderful set has the legend making tremendous new fire with the label's excellent DKV Trio! Given that the group already features Ken Vandermark on saxes, the pairing of Anderson and Ken is a heck of a match – driven on strongly here by the bassist Kent Kessler, who's at the height of his powers during these years – and drummer Hamid Drake, whose range is maybe even more bold here than usual. Titles include "Planet E", "Lady's In Love", "Aaron's Tune", "Black Woman", "Our Theme", and "Dark Day". CD

Anderson.Paak heads to Ventura for this one – and something about that sunny coastal city brings out his soul influences after the primarily hip hop-leaning Oxnard! Paak leads on his raspy sung style for this one, an easygoing hip hop soul sound that's built to last, and again bringing in a heavy hitting of roster guests – including Andre 3000, Nate Dogg, Lalah Hathaway, Brandy and even Smokey Robinson – on tracks including "Come Home", "Make It Better" with Smokey Robinson, "Reachin' 2 Much", "King James", "Goodheels" with Jazmine Sullivan, "Yada Yada", "Jet Black" with Brandy, "Twilight" and "Chosen One" with Sonyae Elise and more. No Business (Lithuania), 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Adam Lane's bass is superb here – really shaping the sound in a sublime way right from the start – brooding and bold up from the bottom – never too heavy-handed, but a force that directs the recording beautifully, and really gives shape to the alto of Darius Jones and drums of Vijay Anderson! The approach is quite different from the usual free trio date – as there's these subtle song structures on most tracks – sometimes more sonic than tune-based, but always full of feeling at a level that's extremely evocative, and which makes the album a superb achievement for all players involved. Titles include "Run To Infinity", "Bioluminescence", "Absolute Horizon", and "The Great Glass Elevator". CD features three more tracks than the LP. CD

✨✧ Ernestine AndersonFascinating Ernestine ... LP
Mercury, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great slice of work from the early years of Ernestine Anderson – one of her key swingers for Mercury, and the kind of record that should have made her huge at the time! There's a hip-stepping quality here that points nicely towards the 60s – a bit more of a bounce in the backings, almost a Basie-esque quality at times – thanks to arrangements from Ernie Wilkins and Gigi Gryce, both of whom bring a great ear for horn charts to the date. Anderson's inherent sense of soul really opens up strongly with both arrangers – swinging with poise one minute, but bluesy undercurrents the next – in ways that really mark the record as coming from the more jazz-based side of late 50s Mercury spectrum. Titles include "Harlem Nocturne", "A New Town Is A Blue Town", "Nobody's Heart", "I Got Rhythm", "Beale Street Blues", "My Heart Belongs To Daddy", and "I Wish I Was Back In My Baby's Arms" LP, Vinyl record album

A compelling take on the country duo mode of the 60s – an album that features some tracks that have all three singers working together – beautiful "love triangle" numbers – then more tracks that feature each singer on their own! The triangle numbers are especially compelling – and include "One Among The Three Of Us", "Bye Bye Love", "Three Mixed Up Hearts", "Which One Is To Blame", and "The Game Of Triangles" – a really fresh version of country heartbreak modes. Other cuts are nice, too – and include Bobby Bare singing "Homesick" and "Guess I'll Move On Down The Line", Liz Anderson singing "The Wife Of The Party" and "Fairytale", and Norma Jean singing "Pursuing Happiness" and "Don't Let That Doorknob Hit You". Joe Byrd & The Field HippiesAmerican Metaphysical Circus ... LP
Columbia, 1969. Sealed ... $29.99
An amazing little record from Joe Byrd – an artist with roots in serious music, but who's serving things up here with a wild hippie aesthetic that makes the whole thing come across more like a "happening" than the usual sort of studio album – but in ways that also echo an earlier generation of Americanist composition too. The process of the record mimics some of Byrd's famous work in New York – and has a very collaborative feel overall, with elements of electronics, acoustics, and vocals coming together beautifully! There's some great tabla, harpsichord, moog, and organ on the record – plus more serious woodwinds and brass – and vocals from Victoria Bond, Susan De Lange, Christie Thompson, and Ernie Anderson – plus Joe himself. Mainstream, Early 70s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
Great work from Gloria Coleman – an overlooked genius on the organ, and part of an elite group of female keyboardists that includes Shirley Scott, Rhoda Scott, and Trudy Pitts! Coleman almost never got the chance to record, but clearly had a sharpness that was honed from years in the clubs – a tight, soulful approach to the instrument that also has her working the bass pedals as strongly as the keys – and an ability to sing at all the right times, in a soul-drenched mode that's even deeper than the vocalizations of Trudy Pitts on her late 60s albums for Prestige. The group's got James Anderson on tenor, Dick Griffin on trombone, Ray Copeland on flugelhorn, and Earl Dunbar on guitar – and titles include the funky "Bugaloo for Ernie" a great version of Kenny Dorham's "Blue Bossa", Blue Mitchell's "Fungi Mama", and the tracks "Blues For Youse", "Love Nest", and "You Better Go Now". One of the great lost groups of the UK scene of the 60s – not lost to UK audiences, or to hipsters over the generations – but still an act that never made the impact on these shores that they should! The Creation are step in step right up there with early material by The Who or Small Faces – and share a similar groundbreaking re-fusion of American roots into a new London groove – all with searing guitars, clever wordplay, and a cutting-edge spirit that may well have kept them off our charts – but which makes them so great to discover all these many years later. You might have caught a few of their songs over the years – thanks to soundtrack placement from directors like Wes Anderson, or covers by many of their bigger fans. This 2CD set features 46 tracks in all, with remastering overseen by original producer Shel Talmy – and the set includes early sides by The Mark Four, some alternate takes, and even new mixes – plus an 80 page hardcover book with scores of photos, other images, session and discographical details, and a new essay too. A record that some might call the last truly great Peter Gabriel album – and a key cap to his excellent initial solo run! The album's got a deeper feel than before – slightly richer colors, more spiritual themes, and arguably more of a sense of majesty – almost an echo of some of the Native American modes explored by Laurie Anderson, who was then a recent collaborator of Gabriel! Instrumentation builds a bit more than before – with less guitars in parts, more percussive bits, and some funkier elements at the bottom that aren't exactly funky – more just a punch in force from the ground up. For the set, he gathered together a host of famous friends – including Omar, Valerie Etienne, Carleen Anderson, Mark Murphy, Chris Bowden, and Ursula Rucker – all to provide vocals and instrumentation for a wonderful set of tracks that skips across genres as easily and fluidly as Andy's fingers skip across the strings of the bass! Andy's strong work on acoustic bass is at the core of the set, but the added guests really flesh out the sound a lot – taking the personal and mellow tunes, and opening them up tremendously. Jazz is at the core of the session, but there's also a folsky warm that touches each tune – not to mention the soulful side of the vocals by all the great singers on the set! Titles include "The Planet Formerly Known As The Moon", "Mothers & Daughters Now Mothers", "Why Do You Cry?", "Getting On", "Camel's Back", "Dear Love", "Catch", and "Sally Tomato". CD

✨✧ Chico HamiltonStar Studded Cast (aka Tanganyika) ... LP
Tampa, 1956. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A real lost slice of work from the career of Chico Hamilton – recorded for the short-lived Dig label, owned by R&B artist Johnny Otis in the mid 50s! The group here is slightly different than Hamilton's quintet that recorded for Pacific Jazz – in that it's got a sound that's a bit less arranged, and which often opens up into some more freewheeling jazz styles at times. Buddy Collette and Jim Hall are on the session from Chico's regular group – and Buddy's really the co-leader of the set, and contributed some fantastic original tunes that are perfect for his colorful work on reeds. And the group's also got Curtis Counce on bass and Gerald Wiggins on piano – bringing a decidedly heavier groove to the record than on most 50s Hamilton work – one that's topped off by the trumpet of John Anderson, often muted but still powerful enough to make its presence known on the set. Titles include the Collette originals "It's You", "Green Dream", "Jungle Pogo Stick", "Tanganyika", and "A Walk On The Veldt" – plus other session originals "And So Is Love", "Wagnervous", and "The Blindfold Test". Deram/London, 1970. Near Mint- ... $99.99
Easily one of the greatest records ever from the Keef Hartley Band – and certainly the group's jazziest! The album's awash in great horn parts that dance along beautifully with the rootsier vocals of the set – sung by guitarist Miller Anderson, in a rough-edged style that has some American bluesy overtones. The set features a great instrumental called "Premonition" – a really tasty little jazz rocker – and saxophonist Jimmy Jewell and trumpeter Henry Lowther get in some great licks on the album as well. Titles include "Morning Rain", "The Time Is Near", "Another Time Another Place", "Change", and "Premonition". LP, Vinyl record album

Impulse (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... $22.99
One of our favorite records by Earl Hines – a hip little comeback set, recorded in the mid 60s with an Ellingtonish lineup that includes Clark Terry, Cat Anderson, Ray Nance, Lawrence Brown, Jimmy Hamilton, and Johnny Hodges. Hines' piano is certainly a strong force in the record, but even more delightful is the solid feel of the players overall – working with that complete coherence found in the best 60s sides by Duke, but touched here with some of Hines' sprightly approach to the melody. Titles include "Once Upon A Time", "Black & Tan Fantasy", "You Can Depend On Me", "Hash Brown", and "Fantastic That's You". CD

It's been many years since Sa-Ra have expanded our minds with their revolutionary blend of hop hop and soul – but fortunately, Shafiq Husayn has carried on the group's legacy – and has reached an even higher plane with music like this! Husayn brings all the fantastic production skills to the album that made Sa-Ra great, but also really opens the door to a much more cosmic soul style of presentation – one that creates a sonic universe that's all his own, but which is big enough to allow for some really great guest work from a lineup that includes Erykah Badu, Hiatus Kaiyote, Anderson.Paak, Robert Glasper, Bilal, Thundercat, and Flying Lotus! Unlike other many-guest records, which sometimes get tipped between the talents from track to track, this album's got a rock-solid core in Shafiq's music – which really unifies the efforts of everyone, and makes the whole thing feel like a wonderfully collaborative effort. WeJazz (Finland), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99
The long-overdue return of a combo that had a huge impact on the sound of jazz on the Scandinavian scene over the past decade or two – given that its members have been involved in such important projects as Five Corners Quintet, Tuomo, Oddarang, and the Timo Lassy combo! Yet at the core, these four musicians are all very individual, and very different than some of that work – much more jazz-based, with a creative interplay between rhythm, tone, and texture – the last of which comes through especially strong in the trumpet work of Verneri Pohjola, which is completely sublime – almost with the power of a tenorist in some ways, but very tied to the structure of his instrument. Tuomo Prattala provides some really amazing textures on piano, alongside the bass of Antti Lotjonen and drums of Olavi Louhivuori – in modes that really keep things interesting throughout. The group begins with a great instrumental reading of Laurie Anderson's classic "O Superman", and other tracks include "Ravelogue", "Land Of Real Men", "Twisted Thistle", "Afterimage", and "Lonely Lonely". Another amazing set from Bluey and Incognito – one of the few groups who seem to get better and better as the years go by! The title of this album is a line from Roy Ayers' classic "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" – and the group begin the record with an excellent cover version of that tune – really setting the scene for the warmly jazzy grooves to come! Somehow, the sound here seems more "instant classic" than ever before – perfectly recorded, deeply soulful, and filled with just the right balance of 70s styles and contemporary touches to keep things fresh throughout. Vocalists include Jocelyn Brown, Carleen Anderson, and Maysa Leak – and Bluey makes no attempt to hide his love of older music – covering tracks from both the pop and soul side of the spectrum, including "That's The Way Of The World", "Summer In The City", "Tin Man", and "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" – as well as "Always There", which is remade here in a new Incognito version, as is "Still A Friend Of Mine". Wayne Henderson handled most of the production for the set, and brings in a nice sense of class that pushes the work far from too-commercial soul – that strong balance that always makes his name on a record one key reason to check it out! There's still a bit of Jackson influence on the vocals – as Rebbie gets help from Michael, Tito, and Randy Jackson – alongside additional guest vocals from Gary Glenn, Patryce Banks, Maxie Anderson, and The Weather Girls. The album's lesser-known than some of the group's earlier hits – which may well make it even fresher all these many years later – a really stunning set of sounds that showcases the newly lyrical sensibility of Ian Anderson – both vocally and on flute – as well as the searing guitar of Martin Barre, which was really becoming a core element of the group at this point. Beautiful early work from Jethro Tull – a formative set that really has the group deepening both their themes and their music! There's still a bit of blues rock at the core – but also some richer, more lyrical modes too – and Ian Anderson does a perfect job of bridging both worlds with his sublime work on flute – an instrument that must have seemed like an odd lead for a rock group at the time, but which is no surprise in the same generation that artists like Herbie Mann and Roland Kirk were making their own hip records – not to mention the great Harold McNair, who was a UK contemporary of Andreson. The whole thing's great – a record that's ripe for rediscovery, and which really gives back year after year – and titles include "A New Day Yesterday", "Back To The Family", "Fat Man", "Reasons For Waiting", "Nothing Is Easy", and the classic instrumental "Bouree". Pretty darn hip stuff from Clifford – in that righteous soul jazz mode that he was using at Strata East, although perhaps a bit less focused than on those records. The record's actually got vocals on a number of tracks – scatting in a kind of hip Bill Lee sort of approach, singing righteous 70s lyrics that sound a bit dated, but which also have a real appeal to fans of hipper soul jazz, sort of in the mode of work by Billy Gault or Joe Lee Wilson. Players include Chris Anderson on piano and electric piano, Roy Burrowes on trumpet, Wilbur Ware on bass – and vocalists Boo Boo Mark, Donna Jordan, and Terri Plair. Black Water is funky fusion from the late 80s combo of keyboardist Joe Zawinul – a set that takes off nicely from his classic work in Weather Report, then adds in both a dose of soul and more global elements! The group features Joe on a host of different keyboards – with Gerald Veasley on some very heavy bass, Scott Henderson on guitars, and Lynne Fiddmont Linsey on vocals and percussion – joined at times by Carl Anderson and Kevin Dorsey, who both give the set a full, righteous vibe! Instrumentation is heavily in an 80s electric mode, but warmed up nicely by the other touches and percussion – and titles include "Black Water", "Carnavalito", "In The Same Boat", "Familial", "Medicine Man", "They Had A Dream", "And So It Goes", and "Monk's Mood". Lost Tribes is a record that has the legendary keyboardist Joe Zawinul dipping further into the mix of jazz and global elements brought forth by his Syndicate group – served up here with a really unusual mix of elements, and a strong balance between acoustic percussion and electric instrumentation! The voice is as powerful here as the groove – sometimes song soulfully, but other times used almost more as another instrument – opening the door further to some of the global sensibilities that Zawinul was bringing to some of his later work with Weather Report. the group features Mike Baker on drums, Randy Bernsen on percussion, and Gerald Veasley on bass – and titles include "Changes", "San Sebatian", "Rua Paula Freitas", "South Africa", "Patriots", and "Lost Tribes". VariousFrom The Archive Vol 2 – Compiled By Volcov ... CD
BBE (UK), 2010s. New Copy ... $7.99 19.99
A fantastic trip through the archive with Volcov – even if most of the cuts here are a bit more recent than those that usually get archival status! And yet in a way, many of these cuts almost went to the archives directly – especially in this digital age for modern soul and club, where so many great singles and albums don't make it onto vinyl – and fade fast in the fast rush of new music hitting the internet. That's why we love collections like this so much – as Volcov's done a great job of grabbing the best bits from the past decade or so, and weaving them together as a strong reminder of how much wonderful soul music is being created on this planet – most of it still waiting to be discovered. There's a few older bits here, but most tracks are contemporary – and titles include "Caterpillar" by Rebirth, "All That Glitters" by Carleen Anderson, "Let The Music Play" by Collective Peace, "Spiraling Prism" by Ian O'Brien, "Ori Space" by Ron Trent, "Turn It Around (Eric Lau rmx)" by Ruth Koleva, "Planet Birth (Xantone Blacq rmx/Volcov edit)" by Intuit with Andy Bey, "Lawra (Volcov edit)" by Tony Williams, "Blue Room (Kaidi Tatham's shokazulu rmx)" by Quentin Kane & Simon Sheldon with TK Blue, "Finding The Peace" by Skymark, "I Put A Spell On You" by Honey Sweet with Cindy Mizelle, and "After Life (part 2)" by Harry Whitaker. VariousGerman Funk Fieber Vol 2 – Infectious Rare Grooves & Krauty Schlager Wonders 1969 to 1978 ... CD
Show Up (Germany), 1970s. Used ... $15.99
German funk galore – a huge batch of 70s gems we'd never find in years of digging on this side of the Atlantic! The grooves here are all pretty darn great – kind of a harder and heavier take on the In Kraut vibe – with vocals on some tracks, but a decided emphasis on kickass drums, rumbling bass, and wicked instrumental licks – all used to really cook up the tunes in a way that's different from American funk of the time – but equally groovy! The set list is possibly even more tight than the first volume – and like before, this one's got full notes on all the cuts – painting a full cultural picture that really helps us enjoy the music. Titles include "High Snobiety" by Sigi Schwab, "Rice & Beans" by James Last, "Get Up Stand Up" by Malcolm's Locks, "Mandrake" by Les Humprhies, "Geld" by Joy Fleming, "Back Talk" by Jurgen Franke, "Understanding" by Don Anderson, "Betwixt & Between" by Fredy Brock, "Sehnsucht" by Kati Kovacs, "Sunny" by Jochen Brauer Sextett, and "Evening Air" by Peter Thomas. VariousGodfather's R&B – James Brown's Productions 1962 to 1967 ... CD
Smash/BGP (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $10.99 18.99
A host of wonderful work produced by James Brown – most of it by a range of different singers, and one by The Godfather himself! The collection brings together some of the earliest James Brown productions – mid 60s tracks recorded for King and Smash Records, most of which aren't nearly as well known as later JB productions for the People and Polydor labels! As with that later work, all the grooves here are right in the same territory that James was hitting himself – upbeat, funky, and stone out of sight soul – all with plenty of rough edges, and backings from the same tight core of musicians that were helping out Brown on his recordings. The package is a real treasure – and is a great complement to the James Brown Singles collections from the Hip-O Select label – proof that even in these early days, James was clearly the hardest working man in show business – given all his time in the studio with other artists! 22 tracks in all – including "I Found Out" and "I'll Keep Pressing On" by Bobby Byrd, "That's When I Cry" and "If You Don't Think" by Anna King, "I Don't Care" and "Unexplainable" by Dizzy Jones, "Got No Excuse" and "If You Don't Work You Can't Eat" by James Crawford, "Do You Really Want To Rescue Me (part 1)" by Elsie Mae, "Lookie Lookie Lookie" by The Jewells, "Wide Awake In A Dream" and "Nobody Cares" by Vicki Anderson, "Devil's Den" by The Poets, "It Hurts To Be In Love" by Yvonne Fair, "That's The Spirit" by Rev Willingham, "Faith" by The Five Royales, "I Cried" by Tammy Montgomery, "Soul Food (parts 1 & 2)" by Al Brisco Clark, and "New Breed (The Boo Ga Loo) (part 1)" by James Brown. ✨✧ Eddie Bo & OthersIn The Pocket With Eddie Bo – New Orleans Rock&Roll, R&B, Soul, & Funk Goodies 1955 to 2007 ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), 1960s/1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most comprehensive collections of work we've ever seen on Eddie Bo – a really well-done set that finally gets at the full range of his massive funky talents – including a host of rare singles done for a variety of other artists as well! Despite the dates in the title, most of the music here is from the 60s and 70s – music from those glorious years of New Orleans soul and funk – when it seemed like the Crescent City groove could never stop, thanks to the efforts of Eddie and some of his contemporaries! There's a massively heavy groove to most of the numbers here – an emphasis on the funkiest side of Eddie Bo's sound, especially when he's working in the studio with other singers in the lead – and even if you've got some other Eddie Bo reissues in your collection, there's plenty fresh stuff here that makes this one well worth owning. CD booklet notes are great too – a full history of Eddie's long career and all its different chapters. 28 tracks in all – including "Funky Yeah" and "Shelly's Rubber Band" by Curley Moore & The Cool Ones, "What's Good To You (part 1)" and "The La La Man (part 1)" by Oliver Morgan, "Horse With A Freeze (part 1)" by Roy Ward, "Timber (parts 1 & 2)" by Candy Phillips, "Can I Be Your Main Squeeze" by Chuck Carbo, "I'm A Carpenter (part 1)" by David Robinson, "Garden Of Our Trees" by The Explosions, "Reborn" by Marilyn Barbarin, "Live It Up" by James K-Nine, "Mama Here Comes The Preacher" by Doug Anderson, ""Something You Got" by Barbara George" – and the tracks "Chained", "When The Fingers On The Funk", "Rubber Band", "Getting To The Middle", "Check Your Bucket", "Lover & Friend", "Can You Handle It", "Fallin In Love Again", "Gotta Have More", and "We Like Mambo" all by Eddie Bo. ✨✧ DKV TrioLive In Wels & Chicago – 1998 ... CD
Okka Disk, 1999. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Back in the 90s, the DKV trio were one of the strongest forces in the Chicago improvising scene – a great group that featured Ken Vandermark on reeds, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – working together with a really boundless sense of energy! This set has the group making a great appearance at the Wels Music Festival in 1998 – stepping out in a way that's a bit different than some of their previous recordings. At the festival, the trio played their incredibly haunting version of Don Cherry's "Complete Communion", drawn out into an extended suite, with the addition of the group's "Memory Sketch", in homage to Cherry. That set is paired here with some material captured on the group's home turf in Chicago – featuring 3 long improvised tracks recorded at Fred Anderson's Velvet Lounge. The Chicago material comprises a second disc in this 2CD set, and it includes the titles "Blues For Tomorrow", "Open Door", and "Burning Sky". CD

✨✧ Duke EllingtonDuke Ellington Live At The Newport Jazz Festival 1959 ... CD
EmArcy, 1959. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rare slice of Duke Ellington at Newport in the 50s – recorded live at the festival in 1959, but unlike other sessions of the time, never issued on record! The set remained unissued until Duke's 90th birthday, and it's a great discovery that easily matches the strength of Ellington's larger live recordings for Columbia at the same time. As is usual for this type of outing, there's a number of shorter tracks that reprise Ellington favorites for the crowd – but those are offset by longer, more serious works that are deeply complex, the highlight of which is "Idiom 59", a great lost composition done especially for the Festival! The full performance runs for over an hour – with players that include Clark Terry, Cat Anderson, Harry Carney, and Johnny Hodges – and other tunes include "Cop Out", "Rockin In Rhythm", "Skin Deep", "Jam With Sam", "Perdido", and "Jones". ✨✧ Duke EllingtonIndigos ... LP
Columbia, 1957. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Duke Ellington's best albums of the 50s – a well-conceived session of dark moody tracks that revisits a few old favorites, hits a few standards, and offers a new gem that's right up there with the classics! The "indigos" title is taken very seriously here – as the album's awash in blue tones and darker hues – a bit Kenton in inspiration, but carried off with a lot more intimacy and sense of soul throughout. The group by this point is completely mature – and old bandmates like Johnny Hodges on alto, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, Jimmy Hamilton on clarinet, Cat Anderson and Ray Nance on trumpets, and Jimmy Woode on bass all fit together perfectly under Ellington's direction. Titles include Duke's great "The Sky Fell Down", plus "Mood Indigo", "Autumn Leaves", "Tenderly", "Dancing In The Dark", "Where Or When", and "Solitude". LP, Vinyl record album

A nice little 60s album by Johnny Hodges – one of the few post-Verve sessions that has him still playing in the hard swinging Ellingtonia small combo mode of the 50s! Players are all strong – and include Jimmy Jones, Cat Anderson, Ray Nance, Harry Carney, and Paul Gonsalves – and the tracks are mostly older numbers, but redone here with a bit more 60s bounce.
