VariousBeat Generation – L'Anthologie Musicale – Hep Cats, Hipsters, & Beatniks 1936 to 1962 ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 30s/1940s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $22.99 29.99
A really cool set that looks at the rise of late 50s beatnik culture from a variety of different styles – not just the jazz and poetry that marked that scene's biggest contribution to music – but also the wealth of modes that inspired those years too! The 3CD package features a stunning 57 titles in all – and begins in the late 30s with hard-edged small combo work and jive-heavy vocal tracks – then runs past WWII to include some bebop, R&B, and very cool vocal numbers – before moving into Greenwich Village classic sounds in a mix of spoken word, jazz poetry, and even a bit of folk! The booklet is filled with notes and history in both English and French – and titles include "The Beat Generation" by Bob McFadden, "High School Drag" by Phillipa Fallon, "The Nazz" by Lord Buckley, "American Haikus" by Jack Kerouac & Al Cohn, "Route 66" by Bobby Troup, "Gator Tail (part 2)" by Cootie Williams, "Rock & Roll" by Wild Bill Moore, "Killin Jive" by Cats & The Fiddle, "You'se A Viper" by Stuff Smith, "Scrapple From The Apple" by Les Double Six, "Kookie's Mad Pad" by Ed Byrnes, "So What" by Eddie Jefferson, "Howl" by Allen Ginsberg, "I Sing Of Olaf" by Roger Steffans, "Say Man" by Bo Diddley, "Shulie A Bop" by Sarah Vaughan, and "The Rocket Ship Show" by Jocko Henderson. VariousNotes From The Underground – Radical Music Of The 20th Century (4CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Late 40s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99 38.99
A fantastic set that really lives up to its title – by presenting a variety of music that all represented the farther reaches of modern sounds in the middle of the 20th Century – electronics, avant classical, and even groundbreaking jazz and poetry as well – all put together in a package that's as sonically striking as the cover! What makes the set great is the way it jumps around in genres and styles – very much as if it were representing the record collection of some New York intellectual at the start of the 60s – with a mix of sounds from Varese, John Cage, Stravinsky, Stockhausen, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Charles Ives, Schoenberg, Ali Akbar Khan, Satie, Allen Ginsberg, Ravi Shankar, and Ornette Coleman! There's also some work by Daphne Oram, who wasn't as available on vinyl over here at the time – but whose contributions sit nicely next to work by Pierre Schaeffer on the set – which is also rounded out by some tracks from The Prisoner and Un Chien Andalou too. 4CDs, great notes, and a heck of a lot of groundbreaking music! ✨✧ Barry MilesZapple Diaries – The Rise & Fall Of The Last Beatles Label (hardcover) ... Book
Peter Owens (UK), 2015. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really cool look at a label that was maybe one of the hippest things the Beatles ever did – the short-lived Zapple imprint – which was part of their main Apple label, but dedicated to more experimental work from a variety of musicians and writers! The imprint is perhaps best remembered as the home of more avant recordings by John & Yoko, and by George Harrison – but it also presented material by Allen Ginsberg, Charles Bukowski, Charles Olson, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and other key underground figures – a legacy that would have been enormous, had it continued. The book is put together by Zapple label manager Barry Miles – and includes loads of photos and images too – studio shots, ads, and a lot more elements that help bring this lost label to life once again! 272 pages, hardcover, with some black and white images. ✨✧ Jack Kerouac & OthersJack Kerouac – 100 Years Of Beatitude ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A really cool little collection – and one that only has partly to do with the beat-era writings of the legendary Jack Kerouac! Jack does appear on the set, and there are some spoken passages by some of his contemporaries – but the sprawling 2CD set does a heck of a lot more to illuminate the vibe of the time – by bringing together jazz vocal and instrumental tracks that were key to the beats, as well as a whole bunch of beatnik-related recordings – some by authentic acts, some by others who were a bit more tongue in cheek – doing their own thing to throw their hat in the ring in the pre-hippie generation! As with other collections on Bear Family like this, the presentation is wonderful – great notes and a fantastic choice of songs – 52 tracks in all, with work by Babs Gonzales, Three Bips & A Bop, King Pleasure, Big Jay McNeely, John Barry, Shel Silverstein, Lenny Bruce, Slim Gaillard, Ken Nordine, Kenny Clarke, Paul Gayten, Oscar Brown Jr, Carl Sandburg, Charlie Parker, The Bee Hives, Louis Nye, Mamie Van Doren, Bing Day, Bob McFadden, Joel Hall, Don Morrow, Lambert Hendricks & Ross, Allen Ginsberg, Paul Evans, and Jack Kerouac himself! ✨✧ Christian Fevret, Carole Mirabello, JC Gabel, & Margret Ross, edsVelvet Underground Experience (hardcover) ... Book
Hat & Beard, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest books we've ever seen on The Velvet Underground – and one that definitely lives up to the promise of the title! The volume brings together interviews, essays, and other material over the space of the group's career, and beyond – but all mixed with vintage images, artwork, and other unusual visual elements – so that the whole thing almost feels as if it was put together by Warhol as a way to document and present the group! The book features essays and writings by Tony Conrad, Jonas Mekas, Allen Ginsberg, and members of the group – including Lou Reed, John Cale, and Sterling Morrison – and also includes side-steps on contemporaries and influences as well. 216 pages, hardcover, with images in color and black and white.
