✨✧ Ahmad JamalAhmad Jamal's Alhambra (SHMCD pressing) ... CD
Argo/Universal (Japan), 1961. New Copy ... $18.99 23.99
Not just a wonderful record for the music, but also for the classic cover image too – a photo of Ahmad Jamal's righteous night club The Alhambra – an Eastern-themed spot on Chicago's Michigan Ave, where Jamal made some incredible music for a few short years! Jamal was one of the few jazz musicians to control his means of production this strongly – and, according to legend, the club actually closed down because he wouldn't allow alcohol to be served – a key support of his spiritual beliefs, but not the greatest choice when running a nightclub. Regardless of that history, though, the music continues to be as proud and powerful as ever – a key modern moment in jazz piano, handled by a trio that also features the legendary Israel Crosby on bass, as well as Vernell Fournier on drums. The set was recorded inside the Alhambra – and tracks include the lovely "Snow Fall", plus hip Jamal takes on "The Breeze & I", "Sweet & Lovely", "The Party's Over", and "Autumn Leaves". CD

✨✧ Andy McGhee, Dusko Goykovich, & OthersTribute To Jimmy Woode – Live At The Alhambra Theatre, Geneva ... CD
Sound Hills (Japan), 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really loving tribute to bassist Jimmy Woode – the American bassist who was a key player on the European scene of the 60s and 70s – remembered for his great work in the Clarke-Boland Big Band and a number of other great groups! The performance here has bassist Reggie Johnson sitting in on bass – plus Andy McGhee on tenor sax, Dado Moroni on piano, and Woode's old MPS compatriot Dusko Goykovich on trumpet – all coming together in a style that's easy-going, soulful, and touched with a hint of sadness at Jimmy's passing – just the kind of beautiful memorial we could ever hope to have some day! Titles include "Ballad For Miles", "My Kind Of World", "Midnight Blues", "On Green Dolphin Street", and "The Theme". CD

✨✧ Ahmad JamalAll Of You (SHMCD pressing) ... CD
Argo/Universal (Japan), 1961. New Copy ... $18.99 23.99
A beautiful demonstration of the unique piano genius of Ahmad Jamal in the early years of his career – his way of blending together some of the complex fluidity and keyboard range of postwar pianists from more staid settings, while also picking up a warmer, more soulful groove – but in styles that are so different than soul jazz contemporaries like Ramsey Lewis and Ray Bryant! Instead, Jamal's got this way of swinging the whole trio with a beautiful sense of cohesion – pulsating enough to groove, but also light enough to be lyrical as well – qualities that are really shared by the bass of Israel Crosby and drums of Vernell Fournier – as they work here alongside Jamal in the space of his famous Alhambra nightclub. Titles include "Time On My Hands", "Angel Eyes", "You Go To My Head", "Star Eyes", and "What Is This Thing Called Love". CD

Michel MagneLe Monde Instrumental De Michel Magne – Jazz Et Musiques De Films 1955 to 1962 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CDs ... $20.99 34.99
French composer Michel Magne is perhaps best remembered for his soundtrack work of the 60s – but this well-done collection digs farther back, and brings together not only some earlier film score work from the postwar years, but also some extra cool instrumental projects too! Magne's always got a special sort of twist in his music – and he was maybe one of the first French arrangers to incorporate newer ideas in pop and rock to his music, at a level that opened the door for later artists like Jean Claude Vannier or Michel Colombier – and like contemporary Alan Goraguer, he's also got some strong backing in jazz as well! Those many streams of styles really come into play here – in a big 3CD package that features 88 tracks in all – including the soundtracks to the films Le Repos Du Guerrier, Le Pain Vivant, Detournement De Mineures, Le Pique Assiette, and Un Singe En Hiver – plus work from a Musique Pour Films album, the records Musique Tachist, Paris, and A L'Alhambra – and even a rare collaboration with author Francoise Sagan! Lonnie SmithAll In My Mind (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 2018. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99 38.99
An incredible live set by Dr. Lonnie Smith – recorded during his 75th birthday celebration at NYC's Jazz Standard! It's mostly in a trio setting with Jonathan Kreisberg on guitar and Johnathan Blake on drums, working through raucous and intimate moments with equal skill. We saw Lonnie play not too long before this impeccable set was recorded, so believe us when we tell you, the next best thing to seeing him do his inimitable thing in person – even as late in the game as his 75th year – is right here! He wastes no time pulling us in with a great take on Wayne Shorter's "Juju", which feels SO good with Lonnie's electric keys, along with some great space for Kreisberg to shine, and the set has some wonderful mellower moments, too. Includes a killer cover of Paul Simon's "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover", Smith's own "Alhambra" and "All In My Mind", plus "Devika", "On A Misty Night"and "Up Jumped Spring". LP, Vinyl record album
(Part of the Blue Note Tone Poet Series – a beautiful pressing, with heavy vinyl and cover!)

Various7 x 7 (2LP white vinyl set & book) ... LP
Tricatel (France), 2023. New Copy 2LP ... $78.99 99.99
A sublime mix of art, jazz, and other unusual sounds – served up in tribute to the roving 7 x 7 exhibition series, and with a really beautiful package! The book itself is great – 12" square, and with 64 pages of artwork and writing in the middle – graced by recordings from a rich array of artists, all of them hip – and very well-chosen for the set! Some of the artists here do work that's very different than their usual material – and the set features contributions that include "Yellow" by Sean O'Hagan, "Azul" by Kassin, "Harlem Nights" by Nile Rodgers, "Sahasrara" by Terry Riley, "Blues In Orange" by Archie Shepp, "Zellesenya" by Mulatu Astatke, and "Red Alhambra" by Robert Wyatt. ✨✧ Bobby HutchersonSolo/Quartet ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
Bobby Hutcherson breaks it down in two different ways – solo on the first half of the record, and in a quartet on the rest! The set begins in a very spare way – Bobby playing vibes, marimba, xylophone, and bells – often a bit overdubbed, so that although alone, Hutcherson fills the tracks with a rich palette of sound – glowingly rhythmic lines that ring out with plenty of soul, and showcase a really under-tapped side of Bobby's talents! Remaining tracks are equally great, but in a totally different way – played by a righteous lineup that includes McCoy Tyner on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – really working together beautifully in ways that make the album feel like a lost 70s soul jazz set. Forget Hutcherson's slick look on the cover – because this album's drenched in open, honest, acoustic feeling – a rich tapestry of sound and emotion, on tracks that include "Gotcha", "The Ice Cream Man", "For You Mom & Dad", "Messina", "My Foolish Heart", and "La Alhambra". CD
