Ryuichi SakamotoLeft Handed Dream (Hidari Ude No Yume) ... LP
Alfa/We Want Sounds (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99
A really great early album from Ryuichi Sakamoto – done during a time when his creative powers seemed to be non-stop, and he was always opening up new sonic territory with each new record! This set brings in some great guitar and "angry animals" from Adrian Belew – a factor that helped the record get some attention over on our side of the Atlantic – but the overall sound is very much in the legacy of Ryuichi's other albums – filled with plenty of electric percussion, keyboards, and other bits – on tunes that are always a bit off-kilter, but always tuneful – often using vocals and effects in ways that push way past conventional pop of the period – and equally comfortable with long instrumental moments too. Titles include "Living In The Dark", "Slat Dance", "Venezia", "Tell Em To Me", "The Garden Of Poppies", and "Relache". LP, Vinyl record album
(Reissues the original Japanese edition – with four page insert!)

VariousBlue Note Re:Imagined 2020 ... CD
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 17.99
The sound of Blue Note Records – reimagined, but by a younger British group of musicians who don't record for the label at all! The sound here is more like recent work on Brownswood, A22, or Impulse Records – as the collection features lots of great contributions from artists who are really reinventing the sound of jazz – not in cheapo remix ways, or styles that are gimmicky – but modes that are deeply committed to the spirit of older music, yet expressing things in ways that are groundbreaking and completely unique! There's an equal balance of electric and acoustic elements here, and plenty of strong jazz solos throughout – very different than some of the Blue Note projects of this sort from previous decades. Titles include "Montara" by Blue Lab Beats, "Speak No Evil" by Emma Jean Thackray, "Wind Parade" by Jordan Rakel, "Galaxy" by Alfa Mist, "Search For Peace" by Ishmael Ensemble, "A Shade Of Jade" by Nubya Garcia, "Prints Tie" by Shabaka Hutchings, "Footprints" by Ezra Collective, "Watermelon Man" by Poppy Ajudha, "Illusion" by Skinny Pelembe, "I'll Never Stop Loving You" by Yazmin Lacey, "Etcetera" by Steam Down, and "Maiden Voyage" by Mr Jukes. ✨✧ VariousJugoton Funk Vol 1 – A Decade Of Non-Aligned Beats, Soul, Disco, & Jazz 1969 to 1979 ... LP
Jugoton/Everland (Germany), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Fierce funk from behind the iron curtain in the 70s – a huge selection of tracks from the Yugoslavian record label Jugoton – most presented here to the western work for the first time ever! The music here isn't the usual American funk and soul of the decade – even though the tracks show plenty of influence from that scene, but work the funky modes through a range of jazz, pop, sound library, and rockish modes – all with a really cool vibe that makes these tracks stand out strongly from the other sorts of music you might have in your collection. Some cuts have elements that are similar to other Eastern bloc funk of the period – like work from Poland or Czechoslovakia – but the label was based in Croatia, and also had more Mediterranean vibes running through the grooves – especially in the latter half of the 70s. Titles include "Zaznamovan" by Mladi Levi, "Tema IV" by Oko, "Blue Jeans" by Rok Hotel, "Lezaj Od Suza" by Josipa Lisac, "Ja Te Uzlaud Ljubim" by Soul Sound Band, "Alfa" by Igor Savin, "Ideja" by Marijan Kasaj, "Puno Parom" by Arsen Dedic, "Ljetne Skice" by Plesni Orkester RTZ, DAvni Zivot" by Dalibor Brun, and "Novinar" by Alfi Kabilijo. Henry Grimes TrioCall (180 gram pressing) ... LP
ESP, 1966. New Copy (reissue)... About January 22, 2021
One of the only albums as a leader from bassist Henry Grimes – a hell of a great player who'd made his name working with Sonny Rollins, but who steps out here into much freer territory! The group features Grimes at the helm on bass, but also features killer contributions from Perry Robinson – playing outside clarinet here at a level that's even more farther reaching that Jimmy Giuffre at his 60s heights. The group's completed by drummer Tom Price, who really spurs the combo on strongly – as they work with a very raw, free sound that features tremendous interplay between all three instruments. One of our favorites on ESP – with titles that include "Fish Story", "Walk On", "The Call", and "Son Of Alfalfa". LP, Vinyl record album

Chris McGregor's Brotherhood Of BreathProcession – Live At Toulouse (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1978. New Copy ... $14.99
Amazing music from Chris McGregor and his legendary Brotherhood Of Breath ensemble – easily one of the most exciting forces in British jazz in the 70s, and one fo the few who was still sounding their best in the latter half of the decade! McGregor's got as much bite and burn here as with his famous earlier combo, The Blue Notes – and the lineup here boasts ex-members of that group – Dudu Pukwana on alto, Johnny Dyani on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums – all joining together perfectly with McGregor's long-spun piano lines. The ensemble also features other key British players – Mike Osborne on alto, Evan Parker on tenor, Harry Beckett and Mark Charig on trumpets, and Radu Malfatti on trombone – creating this bold horn section that stretches to the skies on waves of soul! Two lengthy pieces "Sunrise On The Sun" and "Kwaholo" bookend the shorter piece "Sonia". CD features three more tracks not on the original album – "TBS", "Andromeda", and "You Ain't Gonna Know Me Cos You Think You Know Me". CD

Denis WiseWize Music ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $18.99
Denis Wise plays all instruments on this record – everything but the kitchen sink! Oh wait – the liner notes actually indicate that he does play a kitchen sink – and a garbage disposal too – but in ways that are completely changed, as he mixes them with sounds from a variety of guitars, keyboards, percussion, and various electronic instruments – all in this wild style that's surprisingly earthy and organic! At some level, the music is more a garage version of electro-acoustic modes from the academy – but at another, it's pure unbridled creation, with a sense of sonic joy that really comes through on the best numbers. Some songs are slightly tuneful, and there's maybe a bit of offbeat abstracted vocals here and there – on tunes that include "Balfazzar", "Light As Air", "Valhalla", "Machine Time Ship", "Love In Foam & Surf", "Andro", "Celes", and "Hedonic Rapture". VariousBrasa 4 ... CD
Bemol/Discobertas (Brazil), 1968. New Copy ... $13.99
A cool collection of late 60s rock and pop from Brazil – and a set that stands as a nice contrast to some of the "song festival" albums from the time on Philips and Odeon! Like those sets, this one presents up-and-coming artists working through a variety of material – but rather than showcasing new styles, the modes here are maybe more in the jovem guarda style of the mid 60s – a bit more slavishly tied to American and European styles, although a few of the tunes here are of Brazilian origin too. There's a bit more complexity and sophistication to the music than the chart pop of a few years before – kind of in the way that west coast pop rock acts were letting their hair down a bit by the late 60s – and titles include "Como E Grande O Meu Amor Por Voce" by Os Intrusus, "O Que Ha De Mal Em Mim" by Bitons, "You Only Live Twice" by Os Agitadores, "When Summer Is Gone" by Analfabitles, "Voce Nao Serve Pra Mim" by Amir Francisco, and "Travessia" by Edinho. Warner, 1977. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the more polished efforts we've heard from singer Martha Velez – but one that's done in a way that really stays true to her sound! Given that Martha started out as sort of a soul/rock crossover artist at the beginning of the 70s, this album marks a nice evolution into more sophisticated modes that change with the music – a bit of disco here, some fuller soul styles there – all arranged by Stephan Galfas, David Seance, and Velez herself. Titles include "Up To You", "Oh No Not My Baby", "Once In Awhile", "Leaving Love That's Good", "Crossover", "When You Were Beautiful", and "We're Gonna Last". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Louis MoholoSpirits Rejoice ... LP
Ogun/OTOroku (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the strongest 70s statements from ex-Blue Notes drummer Louis Moholo – recorded in the company of fellow expatriots and UK avant jazzers that include Johnny Dyani, Evan Parker, Kenny Wheeler, Nick Evans, Radu Malfatti, and Harry Miller. The album shifts easily between strongly rhythmic passages that show Moholo's roots in the South African jazz scene, and other, freer sections that also illustrate his importance in the European avant scene of the 70s – and overall, the record's got a beautifully soulful quality that guides it well through all of these moments. Titles include "Wedding Hymn", "Khanya Apho Ukhona", "Ithi Gqi", "Amaxesha Osizi", and "You Ain't Gonna Know Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Ogun (UK), 1978/1995. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful double-length package of work from drummer Louis Moholo – a 2CD set that features one record from recent years, and a key classic from the 70s! Spirits Rejoice is one of the strongest 70s statements from ex-Blue Notes drummer Moholo – recorded in the company of fellow expatriots and UK avant jazzers that include Johnny Dyani, Evan Parker, Kenny Wheeler, Nick Evans, Radu Malfatti, and Harry Miller. That record is followed here by 1995's Bra Louis Bra Tebs – a session with a similar style, especially in its use of African-inspired rhythms – but one that also features a different lineup, and some great use of vocals! Francine Luce sings on a number of the album's best tracks – in a style that's almost an avant-tuned approach to vocalese, and which seems to carry echoes of Norma Winstone – a voice that's dreamy one minute, challenging the next – and often used as a key instrument in the combo's lineup of tenor, alto, trumpet, piano, bass, and drums. Titles include "Utshaka", "Maybe Of Cause", "Moegoe", "Sonke", and "Lakutshona Ilanga". CD
