Tommy FlanaganJazz Poet ... CD
Alfa/Compose, 1989. Used ... $6.99
A great title for this one – given the extremely poetic sound of Tommy Flanagan on the piano! For years, Tommy's had a great talent for being as bopper, yet as sensitive as a mellower, more lyrical player too – a brilliant combination that shows up instantly in the first few notes of this set – a late 80s recording that's filled with warmth and subtle imagination. The trio features George Mraz on bass and Kenny Washington on drums – the latter of whom really gets things swinging in some great gentle ways – and titles include "Raincheck", "Lament", "Caravan", "Voce Abuso", "Mean Streets", and "That Tired Routine Called Love". ✨✧ Pierre BarouhSierras ... LP
Alfa (Japan), 1984. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An overlooked 80s album from the great Pierre Barouh – recorded right after his better-known album Pollen – and, like that one, recorded in collaboration with a host of Japanese musicians and composers! Francis Lai wrote a bit of music – Barouh's longtime partner – but the set also features contributions from Yukihiro Takahashi, Yasuaki Shimizu, Kazuiko Kato, and Hajime Taichibana. ✨✧ Diego FrabettiInterno 41 ... CD
Alfa (Italy), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We'll be honest in saying that we'd never heard the music of trumpeter Diego Frabetti before this album, and only picked it up because it features Fender Rhodes from Danny Grissett – but after the first few notes, we were in love right away – and really love the sound of both Frabetti and his group on the session! Grissett is a key part of the set, and also plays some great acoustic piano as well – and the combo also features Barend Middelhof on tenor, Davide Brillante on guitar, Stefano Senni on bass, and Nicola Angelucci on drums – again, all players who are new to us, and who work together beautifully here with a strong sense of cohesion that really comes through in the colors of the sound! Frabetti's got a voice that's right on the money, and never overdone – and the balance of trumpet, tenor, guitar, and keyboards is wonderful throughout – on titles that include "Maestro Up Tempo", "Melamia", "Stessi Occhi", "Ciclico", "Piogge", and "Interno 41". ✨✧ FloFilzTransit (with booklet) ... LP
Melting Pot (Germany), 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Jazzy hip hop from German producer FloFilz – and by describing it as jazzy hip hop, we mean that for real, it's genuinely inspired by classic and contemporary UK club and soul jazz while still being pretty firmly rooted timeless, latenight vibe hip hop. Hypnotic beats and loping atmosphere built on jazz centric keys, bass and strings – with vocals on a handful of tunes, but based strongly in the atmospheric hip hop production. Includes "Checkinthru", "Larcade" feat Alfa Mist, "Lanai Gardens", "Ramen For Breakfast", "Tgelegraph Hill Park", "Bad Self", "Tube Trouble", "Lucid Daze, "Inside Put" feat Biig Piig, "Montclare St", "Jacamar", "Far Off" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited gatefold pressing – really nicely done, too, with a booklet in the gatefold featuring photography by Robert Winter.)

✨✧ Krzystof DudaAltus ... CD
GAD (Poland), Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Very cool sound library work from the Polish scene of the 80s – played on a host fo great keyboards, and in a highly electronic way that rivals some of the best soundtrack material of the time! Krzystof Duda may not be as well known as American or European keyboard giants of the period, but he's got a way with his keys that creates a lot of the same dark textures and spooky moments of the 80s horror generation – particularly those great records that sprung up in the wake of John Carpenter's early material, and were filled with pulsating passages. Duda plays Arp, Korg, moog, and lots more here – on titles that include "Baza Alfa", "Altus", "Blue Man", "Pasterka Na Wzgorzu", "Tascam", "Dyfrakcja", and "Analiza Widma". CD

CompanyCompany 1981 ... LP
Incus/Honest Jons (UK), 1981. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $32.99
A lost chapter of the essential Company series of improvised recordings from the late 70s – music that was recorded by the BBC in 1981, and which continues the fantastic meeting of British and European players that made those earlier records so great! If anything, there may be even more creative intensity taking place here – a further move away from any jazz roots, even though the style is certainly done in a free jazz spirit – but with qualities that unlock sonic possibilities in the instruments that might not have been expected a decade before! Players include Derek Bailey on guitar, Tristan Honsinger on cello, Toshinori Kondo on trumpet, David Toop on flute and small instruments, Georgie Born on cello, Lindsay Cooper on bassoon, Radu Malfatti on trombone, and Jamie Muir on percussion. As with other Company records, the lineup shifts from track to track – and titles include "Come On & Hear", "Trackle", "Cackle", "Pass", "Trio", "Quartet", and "Heptarchy". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Chris McGregor's Brotherhood Of BreathProcession ... LP
Ogun (UK), 1978. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Amazing music from Chris McGregor and his legendary Brotherhood Of Breath ensemble – easily one of the most exciting forces in British jazz in the 70s, and one fo the few who was still sounding their best in the latter half of the decade! McGregor's got as much bite and burn here as with his famous earlier combo, The Blue Notes – and the lineup here boasts ex-members of that group – Dudu Pukwana on alto, Johnny Dyani on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums – all joining together perfectly with McGregor's long-spun piano lines. The ensemble also features other key British players – Mike Osborne on alto, Evan Parker on tenor, Harry Beckett and Mark Charig on trumpets, and Radu Malfatti on trombone – creating this bold horn section that stretches to the skies on waves of soul! Two lengthy pieces "Sunrise On The Sun" and "Kwaholo" bookend the shorter piece "Sonia". LP, Vinyl record album

Joe McPheeLoneliest Woman ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1981. New Copy ... $7.99
A previously-unissued performance from Joe McPhee – recorded in the early 80s, and a searing ensemble take on Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman"! The arrangements are beautiful – as the track retains some of the haunting melody of the original composition, yet has a loose, creative approach that also allows for lots of improvisation in the middle – stunning performances from Joe McPhee on pocket cornet, Andre Jaume on tenor, Daniel Bourquin on baritone, Michael Overhage on cello, Radu Malfatti on trombone, Raymond Boni on guitar, Irene Schweizer on piano, Francois Mechali on bass, and Pierre Favre on percussion – plus a bit of vocals from Tamia at one spot. The track only runs for 13 minutes, making this a mini-album of sorts – but it's a true treasure, finally unearthed! CD

Louis MoholoSpirits Rejoice ... LP
Ogun/OTOroku (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
One of the strongest 70s statements from ex-Blue Notes drummer Louis Moholo – recorded in the company of fellow expatriots and UK avant jazzers that include Johnny Dyani, Evan Parker, Kenny Wheeler, Nick Evans, Radu Malfatti, and Harry Miller. The album shifts easily between strongly rhythmic passages that show Moholo's roots in the South African jazz scene, and other, freer sections that also illustrate his importance in the European avant scene of the 70s – and overall, the record's got a beautifully soulful quality that guides it well through all of these moments. Titles include "Wedding Hymn", "Khanya Apho Ukhona", "Ithi Gqi", "Amaxesha Osizi", and "You Ain't Gonna Know Me". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousBrasa 4 ... CD
Bemol/Discobertas (Brazil), 1968. New Copy ... $18.99
A cool collection of late 60s rock and pop from Brazil – and a set that stands as a nice contrast to some of the "song festival" albums from the time on Philips and Odeon! Like those sets, this one presents up-and-coming artists working through a variety of material – but rather than showcasing new styles, the modes here are maybe more in the jovem guarda style of the mid 60s – a bit more slavishly tied to American and European styles, although a few of the tunes here are of Brazilian origin too. There's a bit more complexity and sophistication to the music than the chart pop of a few years before – kind of in the way that west coast pop rock acts were letting their hair down a bit by the late 60s – and titles include "Como E Grande O Meu Amor Por Voce" by Os Intrusus, "O Que Ha De Mal Em Mim" by Bitons, "You Only Live Twice" by Os Agitadores, "When Summer Is Gone" by Analfabitles, "Voce Nao Serve Pra Mim" by Amir Francisco, and "Travessia" by Edinho. One of the classic Hat Art sets from the early 80s, and a great recording by McPhee with a group that boasts Radu Malfatti, Irene Schweizer, Raymond Boni, Pierre Favre, and Andre Jaume. ✨✧ Denis WiseWize Music ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Denis Wise plays all instruments on this record – everything but the kitchen sink! Oh wait – the liner notes actually indicate that he does play a kitchen sink – and a garbage disposal too – but in ways that are completely changed, as he mixes them with sounds from a variety of guitars, keyboards, percussion, and various electronic instruments – all in this wild style that's surprisingly earthy and organic! At some level, the music is more a garage version of electro-acoustic modes from the academy – but at another, it's pure unbridled creation, with a sense of sonic joy that really comes through on the best numbers. Some songs are slightly tuneful, and there's maybe a bit of offbeat abstracted vocals here and there – on tunes that include "Balfazzar", "Light As Air", "Valhalla", "Machine Time Ship", "Love In Foam & Surf", "Andro", "Celes", and "Hedonic Rapture".
