Albert CollinsCompleat Albert Collins ... LP
Imperial, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Funky blues from Albert – recorded in Nashville with a nice raw groove! The tracks are about half vocal and half instrumental – but the real standout star of the album is Albert's guitar, which is played here with a raw raspy quality that cuts through just about any sort of arrangement. Titles include "Bitsey", "69 Underpass Roadside Inn", "Coon N Collards", "Sweet N Sour", "Swamp Sauce", and "Junkey Monkey". LP, Vinyl record album
(NOTE – Vinyl is in great shape, but cover has some stains and peeling along the bottom.)

Hall, Late 60s. Very Good- ... $6.99
Two hard and heavy numbers from Albert Collins! Both sides are instrumentals – with a groove that's somewhere in between soul jazz and electric blues. Collins' guitar is out front in both arrangements, soloing up a storm, and riffing off madly! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Blue Thumb, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great early work from Albert Collins – the kind of mean, lean music that Collins specialized in before his later years of cliche – served up here in a style that's almost more funk than blues overall! The tracks are all instrumentals, with lots of raw guitar and soulful saxophone – coming across with a rootsy feel that's much more in the mode of work on a soul-based indie than you'd expect from the usual slicker sides on Blue Thumb – hardly smooth LA, and instead almost a funky 45 vibe overall! The titles give a good example of the stripped-down sound of the tunes – and they include "Kool Aide", "Thaw Out", "Hot N Cold", "Frosty", "Tremble", and "Icy Blue". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has some ring & edge wear.)

John ZornSpillane ... CD
Elektra/Nonesuch, 1987. Used ... $6.99
One of our favorite Zorn "tribute" albums from the 80s – in this case a set of long pastiche tracks that pays hommage to pulp writer Mickey Spillane, Albert Collins, and the film Forbidden Fruit. The track "Spillane" is the best – a side-long number that features text by Arto Lindsay, plus John Lurie as the voice of Mike Hammer – over instrumentation by Bill Frisell, Anthony Coleman, Zorn, Jim Staley, Bob James, and Bobby Previte. "Two Lane Highway" is a showcase for solo work by Albert Collins, but Zorn nicely messes things up a lot with a New York downtown approach that includes John Patton, Bobby Previte, Ronald Shannon Jackson, and Wayne Horvitz. "Forbidden Fruit" features the Kronos Quartet augmented with voice by Ohta Hiromi and turntables by Christian Marclay! Also includes "Spillane" & "Two Lane Highway". CD
(Out of print, tray card has a stain in one corner.)
