Ipa BoogieIpa Boogie ... LP
Albarika Store/Acid Jazz (UK), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 23.98
Fantastic funk from late 70s Benin – a set that maybe owes as much to the sound of New York as it does to the West African groove of the time! The album's got a monstrous bassy vibe all the way through – with cuts that often just riff and groove like some of the best clubby funk acts of the time – not disco, but more the kind of rougher funk for a hip dancefloor – mixed with occasional African elements, including a bit of highlife-inspired guitar – which can sound pretty darn great next to the weirder, spacier keyboard lines! There's a really unique vibe to the record – even next to some of the standout Nigerian rarities of the time – and titles include "Get The Music Now", "Africa", "Jesus Kesse Me", "Sunga Mba", "Giving Yourself To Me", and "Alo Dangereux". Orchestra Poly Rythmo De CotonouUnite Africaine ... LP
Albarika Store/Acid Jazz (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 23.98
Searing sounds from this legendary group – two side-long tracks that burn with fire throughout! First up is "Unite Africaine" – a tune with a political message in the lyrics, and non-stop grooves in the rhythms – this wonderfully fast percussion that's laced together with basslines, topped with great saxophone parts, and woven with these electric keyboard waves that are totally great! The flipside of the album features the long "Meda Ma Gnin Messe" – a tune with even funkier percussion in the mix, at a level we've never heard – almost ringing out with an equal sort of melody, and setting things up for a cascading rhythm that never seems to give up! Orchestra Poly Rythmo De CotonouVol 4 – Yehouessi Leopold Batteur ... LP
Albarika Store/Acid Jazz (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 23.99
A stunner of an album from this legendary group – hard and funky right form the start, with these long tracks that have the TP Orchestre showing that they can jam just as hard and long as Fela Kuti & Afrika 70 – but in a very different way! The percussion is great, the guitar lines completely seductive, and the horn parts have all these cool, crispy currents that really shade in the sound in a wonderful way – making for a rich balance against the leaner qualities of the guitar lines that cut back and forth over the grooves in a really wonderful way. A killer sets from one of the African greats of the 70s – with three long tracks that include "Davi Djinto Super No 2", "Homin Si Tche", and "Aiha Ni Kpe We". LP, Vinyl record album

Orchestre Anassoua Jazz De Parakou Nord DahomeyBakassine Gabou/Moumouni Bassina Borou Fo ... 7-inch
Albarika Store/Acid Jazz (UK), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $8.99
Two rare cuts from this legendary group from Benin! First up is the funky "Bakassine Gabou" – a tune that has a bassline that pulsates along with percussion at the core – peppered with lilting guitar, while these very unusual chorus vocals soar over the top! "Moumouni Bassina Borou Fo" has a more complex groove overall – lots of guitar, but nicely twisted – almost like a highlife tune taken at an unusual pace! 7-inch, Vinyl record

TP Orchestra Poly Rythmo De CotonouLe Sato ... CD
Albarika Store/Acid Jazz (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Stunning early work from the Orchestra Poly Rhythmo – a set that's titled after a set of rhythms used in voodoo rituals in Benin – echoed here strongly by the heavy use of percussion on the record, which includes a giant drum reserved for use only in ritual performance! The sound is nice and lean – guitars lacing the percussion together, topped with just the right use of horns – on long tracks that stretch out with very hypnotic rhythms, and some nice psychedelic guitar moments as well! The record was one of the first issued on the tiny label of the Albarika Store – and titles include "Gnonnou Ho", "My Love", "Gan Tche Kpo", and "Min E Wa We Non Dou". CD

TP Orchestre Poly Rhythmo De CotonouKpede Do Gbe Houenou/Ma Wa Mon Nou Mi O ... 7-inch
Albarika Store/Acid Jazz (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $8.99
Two funky nuggets from the legendary TP Orchestre! "Kpede Do Gbe Houenou" is a masterpiece of funky bass and offbeat horns – a really unusual groove that gets even weirder in the middle – as this long electric piano solo comes into the mix, and almost makes you think that Sun Ra is along for the ride! The flipside has some amazing drums – nicely snapping on the snare at the start, which sets a guitar riffing along super-past – almost a "Shaft" theme energy, but with a very West African spin! 7-inch, Vinyl record
