Ipa BoogieIpa Boogie ... LP
Albarika Store/Acid Jazz (UK), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 28.99
Fantastic funk from late 70s Benin – a set that maybe owes as much to the sound of New York as it does to the West African groove of the time! The album's got a monstrous bassy vibe all the way through – with cuts that often just riff and groove like some of the best clubby funk acts of the time – not disco, but more the kind of rougher funk for a hip dancefloor – mixed with occasional African elements, including a bit of highlife-inspired guitar – which can sound pretty darn great next to the weirder, spacier keyboard lines! There's a really unique vibe to the record – even next to some of the standout Nigerian rarities of the time – and titles include "Get The Music Now", "Africa", "Jesus Kesse Me", "Sunga Mba", "Giving Yourself To Me", and "Alo Dangereux". Les Sympathics De Porto-Novo BeninLes Sympathics De Porto-Novo Benin Vol 2 ... LP
Albarika Store/Acid Jazz (UK), Mid 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 29.99
Excellent work from a hard-riffing combo – a smaller group from Benin who work in this wonderful blend of guitar, bass, and percussion – topped with very cool organ lines that sometimes almost have a horn-like sort of vibe! Tracks are all nice and long, and have some familiar West African elements, but delivered with a very personal approach – more intimate than some larger ensembles, and with some really fantastic rhythms that maybe get even more from the lean approach of the group! Titles include "E Go Ibo", "The End Of Suffer", "Cust No De Kill", and "La Route Est Longue". LP, Vinyl record album

Orchestra Poly Rythmo De CotonouVol 4 – Yehouessi Leopold Batteur ... LP
Albarika Store/Acid Jazz (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 29.99
A stunner of an album from this legendary group – hard and funky right form the start, with these long tracks that have the TP Orchestre showing that they can jam just as hard and long as Fela Kuti & Afrika 70 – but in a very different way! The percussion is great, the guitar lines completely seductive, and the horn parts have all these cool, crispy currents that really shade in the sound in a wonderful way – making for a rich balance against the leaner qualities of the guitar lines that cut back and forth over the grooves in a really wonderful way. A killer sets from one of the African greats of the 70s – with three long tracks that include "Davi Djinto Super No 2", "Homin Si Tche", and "Aiha Ni Kpe We". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ TP Orchestra Poly Rythmo De CotonouLe Sato ... CD
Albarika Store/Acid Jazz (UK), 1974. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Stunning early work from the Orchestra Poly Rhythmo – a set that's titled after a set of rhythms used in voodoo rituals in Benin – echoed here strongly by the heavy use of percussion on the record, which includes a giant drum reserved for use only in ritual performance! The sound is nice and lean – guitars lacing the percussion together, topped with just the right use of horns – on long tracks that stretch out with very hypnotic rhythms, and some nice psychedelic guitar moments as well! The record was one of the first issued on the tiny label of the Albarika Store – and titles include "Gnonnou Ho", "My Love", "Gan Tche Kpo", and "Min E Wa We Non Dou". CD

✨✧ Orchestra Poly Rythmo De CotonouUnite Africaine ... LP
Albarika Store/Acid Jazz (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Searing sounds from this legendary group – two side-long tracks that burn with fire throughout! First up is "Unite Africaine" – a tune with a political message in the lyrics, and non-stop grooves in the rhythms – this wonderfully fast percussion that's laced together with basslines, topped with great saxophone parts, and woven with these electric keyboard waves that are totally great! The flipside of the album features the long "Meda Ma Gnin Messe" – a tune with even funkier percussion in the mix, at a level we've never heard – almost ringing out with an equal sort of melody, and setting things up for a cascading rhythm that never seems to give up! ✨✧ Orchestre Les Volcans Du BeninOrchestre Les Volcans Du Benin Vol 1 ... LP
Albarika Store/Acid Jazz (UK), Mid 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A great group from 70s Benin, and one who issued this smoking set on the legendary Nigerian label owned by the Albarika Stores! The tracks have an unusual blend of elements – West African guitar work, occasional mambo influences, and just a slight touch of funk at the start – all served up with some great horn work that kind of lilts along with the groove and colors in the tunes in a great way! The lead vocals are charmingly raspy, with a very earnest vibe – often echoed by other members of the group as they sing along with their instruments – on titles that include "Bella", "Mercenariat Africa", "Gbemeho", and "Oya Ka Jojo". ✨✧ TP Orchestra Poly Rythmo De CotonouAfro Funk ... LP
Albarika Store/Acid Jazz (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An album that really lives up to its title, and one that brings together a host of rare singles from this legendary group – all of which are maybe even funkier than some of the tracks on their albums of the time! The bulk of the record is from very rare 7" singles issued on the Albarika Store label, and the set's completed by two rare compilation cuts as well – and the result is a record that's overflowing with hard-edged gems that really show off the unique funky sound of the TP Orchestra Poly Rhythmo – lots of heavy drums at the bottom, cool criss-crossing organ lines, and a style that's a lot leaner than that of Fela and some of his contemporaries. Titles include "Mi Si Ba To", "Minko E So Non Moin", "Gbeti Ma Diro", "Segla", "Kou Tche Kpo So O", "Mi Ve Wa Se", and "Aiha Ni Kpe We". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ TP Orchestra Poly Rythmo De CotonouLe Sato 2 ... LP
Albarika Store/Acid Jazz (UK), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The rare second volume of this elusive record from one of the funkiest combos in Benin – a set that was originally only circulated in the same cover as the first volume – which has made for plenty of confusion over the years! This follow-up is maybe even more hard-hitting than the initial release – with long tracks that groove wonderfully with skittish rhythms, strong basslines, and raw production that makes the guitar and vocals echo out in a really bold way! There are occasional echoes of Latin American styles that influenced music in West Africa – especially Colombian modes – and the blend of sounds here is completely fantastic. Titles include "General Gowon", "A Non Zoun Mi", "La Verite Blesse", "Je N'En Pleux Plus", and "Gendemou Na Wili We Gnannin". LP, Vinyl record album
