✨✧ Alan Hawkshaw/Keith MansfieldBeat Incidental – KPM 1043 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
KPM/Be With (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Very short themes from these two giants of the Brit sound library scene – some of them funky, some of sweet, all of them pretty darn great! Many numbers have a very stark, spare approach – one drum pattern, a slightly more complicated bassline, then more creative work on keyboards or guitar – all used in these ways that echo with the grooviest qualities of late 60s British TV and broadcasting – which is no surprise, given that most of these tracks were geared towards those settings! Side one is collaborative work between Alan Hawkshaw and Keith Mansfield, and side two is all Mansfield on his own – with titles that include "Funky Chase", "Funky Link 1", "Teenage Suspense", "The Busy Scene", "The Passing Scene", "The Brisk Scene", "The Action Scene", "Scene Link 6", and "Funky Fanfare" – done with some mighty nice organ! Keith Mansfield/Alan HawkshawKPM 1000 – The Big Beat (180 gram pressing) ... LP
KPM/Tummy Touch (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 22.98
One of the grooviest sound library records ever made – a whopping batch of funky Hammond heavies from British legends Keith Mansfield and Alan Hawkshaw! The rare set was recorded right at the tail end of the 60s – and it's got a mod sort of style that mixes funky rhythms with some incredibly groovy work on organ – all in service of tight, short tunes originally recorded for use in radio and TV, but which is easily some of the best instrumental work coming out of the UK at the time! Both players are at the top of their game here – Hawkshaw, with plenty of those whomping grooves we love so much in his work with The Mohaws – and Mansfield, with a clean lean line on the keys that's equally great. Titles include "Exclusive Blend", "Teenage Travelogue", "Teenage Ton Up", "The Mexican DJ", and "Red Square Stomp" by Keith Mansfield – and "Studio 69", "Work Out", "Beat Me Til I'm Blue", "Senior Thump", "Tap Footer", "Delivery Date", "Man On The Move", and "Debsville" by Alan Hawkshaw. ✨✧ David Gold, John Cameron, Alan Hawkshaw, et alBig City Suite & KPM 1000 Series Compilation 1972 to 1978 ... CD
KPM/Vocalion (UK), 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sweet KPM funk from the 70s – a set that features the legendary "Big City Suite" from David Gold, plus 20 other groovers from rare KPM sound library albums of the time! Gold's suite is really great – a hip mix of keyboards, wah wah guitar, and strings – all wrapped together warmly in a portrait of a city from a variety of angles, in a variety of moods. The work's almost an update of 50s city-symphony albums, but is put together here with a much hipper 70s soundtrack mode – lots of subtle elements that really keep things interesting! Other tracks offer up a mix of jazz, soundtrack, and sound library funk – hand-picked from KPM classics like Jazzrock, Synthesis, Sounds Of The Times, Trendsetters, and other legendary albums – really packed in here with a huge amount of cuts that are totally great! Titles include "Good Vibrations" and "Trial Of Strength" by Keith Mansfield, "Testing Time" by David Lindup, "Four O'Clock Earthquake" and "Smokey Joe's Dilemma" by John Cameron, "Watchful Eye" by James Clarke, "Sunshine Special" and "Get Ready Get Set Fly" by Alan Hawkshaw, "Open Roads" by Nick Ingman, "Go Getter" by John Cameron, "City Airscape" and "City Police" by David Gold, and "Lap Of Honour" by Clive Hicks. ✨✧ VariousSounds Of The Times – From The KPM & Conroy Music Libraries 1970 to 1977 ... CD
KPM/Vocalion (UK), 1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of Brit sound library work – most of it from the legendary KPM 1000 Series, plus assorted bits from the Conroy label as well! The work here leans heavily towards funky jazz – those fuzzy, hard-driving tunes that always made KPM sides a key choice for action films and cop shows – and which have made digging through sound library records such a delight all these many decades later! The compilers did a really wonderful job with this set – creating a feel that's a bit different than the usual sound library collection – because although funky overall, the package also features some jazzy moments too – key cuts that are interspersed with the action moments to create a really fleshed-out sense of mood and feeling. Plus, the set list is huge – 25 tracks in all, running for well over 70 minutes – truly the treasure trove we promised at the start of this review, with titles that include "Soul For Sale" and "Tycoon" by Keith Mansfield, "Block Buster" and "Head In The Clouds" by Johnny Pearson, "Loco Motion" and "Soul Foot Strut" by Dave Gold, "Traffic" and "Challenger" by Alan Hawkshaw, "Short Cut" by James Clarke, "Heavy Traffic" by James Cameron, "Speculation" by David Lindup, "Vegas To LA" by Dick Doerschuk, "Tough Assignment" by Chris Gunning, "Speedway" by Nick Ingman, "String Boogie" by Brian Bennett, and "The Double Take" by Steve Gray.
