✨✧ Al ValdezGozando (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mag/Vampi Soul (Spain), Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A complete killer from the Peruvian scene of the 60s – a set that shows just how special it is when the leadoff descarga track breaks into a searing saxophone solo within the first few seconds! Things don't let up after that – and Al Valdez keeps things moving and grooving at a level that rivals the best of the New York scene of the time – but maybe even more amazing given that he was working in a much smaller setting down south in Lima! Every track is a gem, and the record is rock-solid throughout, with excellent piano, percussion, and just the right use of horns – on titles that include "Dame Tu Carino", "Aprieta", "Guajira Guantanamera", "Tabaquera", "El Columpio", "Pachanga Se Baila Asi", "Que Rico Sabor", and the smoking title cut "Gozando". ✨✧ Cal TjaderSoul Burst ... LP
Verve, 1966. Very Good Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer Verve Records set from vibist Cal Tjader – a set that brings together both his Latin inclinations and his groovier 60s mod style – all in a blend that's handled perfectly by arranger Oliver Nelson! Other players include Jerry Dodgion and Jerome Richardson on flutes, Attila Zoller on guitar, Chick Corea on piano, and Jose Mangual, Patato Valdez, and Victor Pantoja on Latin percussion! Titles include "Descarga Cubana", "Morning", "Oran", "Curacao", and "Chuchy Frito Man". Very nice! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear and light staining from moisture on the bottom corner.)

Terrace MartinVelvet Portraits ... LP
De Rap Winkel, 2016. New Copy (reissue)... $44.99 About July 1, 2021 (delayed)
A jaw-dropper from Terrace Martin – the kind of record that sneaks on the market under everyone's ears, but will no doubt be one of those sets we'll all go back to again and again over the years! Martin's got a beautifully fresh take on funky jazz – steeped somewhat in the classic inspiration of the 70s era, but with a distinctly 21st Century execution – with crispy edges, cosmic currents, and a chunky approach to rhythm that makes the whole thing come across with a really subtle sort of power! The album's overflowing with guests – including Robert Glasper, Thundercat, Kamasai Washington, Keyon Harrold, and Laylah Hathaway – but there's also a core energy that's all Terrace's own, with lots of snakey keyboards that weave these magical tonal patterns in a wonderful way. Brilliant, and completely captivating – with tracks that include "Push", "Curly Martin", "Never Enough", "Turkey Taco", "Tribe Called West", "Think Of You", "Bromalia", and "Valdez Off Crenshaw" – a nice remake of the Donny Hathaway classic "Valdez In The Country". Nite-LitersA-Nal-Y-Sis ... CD
RCA/Dusty Groove, 1973. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
A masterpiece of hard and heavy funk – from one of the best bands of the early 70s! The Nite Liters were a legendary funky combo that provided the backing for some of New Birth's best albums – but on their own, they were even funkier, and had a sound that was part JBs, part Meters, and all funky! This album may well be the group's best – their last for RCA, and a set that really has them honing their edge incredibly. The drums are amazing, the keyboards great, and the horns have this quality that's both complex, yet right on the money – making for a richness in sound that really sets the group apart from their contemporaries. A few singers from The New Birth provide chorus vocals on a few tracks – but most of the set is instrumental, and the record's one we'd gladly stack next to our Meters albums on Josie or JBs classics on People. Every track's a gem – and titles include "Drumology", "Excuse Me While I Do My Thing", "Serenade for a Jive Turkey", "Happy Hooker", "Craaashing", "Damn", "Pee-Foul", and a sweet cover of "Valdez in the Country" that's been sampled at least once over the years! ✨✧ Donny HathawayExtension Of A Man ... CD
Atlantic/Rhino, 1973. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Perhaps Donny Hathaway's greatest album from the 70s, and certainly the one with the most amazing arrangements! The record was Donny's last studio session, and it's got him working at a level that's far advanced from even his groundbreaking earlier work – using complicated rhythms and sophisticated string passages – but also throwing in some killer jazzy bits that make for some of his funkiest work ever! The liner notes have Donny showing off his musical training in evaluations of the song structures, but the music alone should be enough to convince you this one is great! Includes "The Slums", a funky rollicking tune that is sort of a follow-up to "The Ghetto"; "Valdez In The Country", a totally catchy instrumental with loads of electric piano, and a very Bob James-esque sound; the jaunty "Flying Easy"; and the spiritual soul cuts "Someday We'll All be Free" and "I Love The Lord, He Heard My Cry (parts 1 & 2)". Herbie MannNew Mann At Newport ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1966. New Copy ... $6.99 11.99
Herbie Mann returns to the stage at the Newport Jazz Festival – but opens up in ways that are even hipper than some of his other material from that scene! The tracks here are quite long – driven by some great rhythms from Carlos Patao Valdez, and featuring round, rolling basslines from the mighty Reggie Workman. And in addition to Herbie's own smoking work on flute, the set also features great young trumpet from Jimmy Owens – whose bold style here really gives the record a nice sort of depth. The set features four tracks from Newport, plus one more studio number with Attila Zoller on guitar – and titles include "Project S", "Scratch", "She's A Carioca", and "All Blues". CD

Ernie WattsChariots Of Fire ... LP
Qwest, 1982. Very Good ... $2.99
Don't let the title and cover put you off – because the album's neither a version of the Chariots Of Fire soundtrack, nor the kind of hokey effort you might expect! Instead, the record's one of a great line of soulful 80s fusion sets from Ernie Watts – a player with roots in spiritual jazz, and countless 70s sessions for famous artists – but one who really came into his own with records like this! The album's got a sweet mix of jazz and R&B – a vibe that Ernie learned from LA scenemates The Crusaders, but which he explores here in a variety of ways – from upbeat groovers to mellow ballads, all voiced at a very personal level on alto sax. The record features a sweet remake of "Valdez In The Country" – retooled for the 80s – plus two takes on "Chariots Of Fire", and the tracks "Abraham's Theme", "Five Circles", "Lady", and "Hold On". ✨✧ VariousSanteria – Mystic Music From Cuba 1939 to 1962 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 30s/1940s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $22.99 29.98
A fantastic collection of music from Cuba – not the jazzy descarga styles that led to salsa, nor the more romantic singers that are maybe some of the nation's best-known artists – but instead a wealth of work that mixes raw percussion and vocals to support the spiritual practice of santeria! The music here represents a shifting spiritual culture that was taking place in the Caribbean during the 20th Century – as African and Spanish ideas were coming into play with each other – forming new modes of understanding, which also led to new musical practices as well! Many of these recordings were done at the same time that larger, more polished orchestras were dominating the Cuban scene – but they represent rootsier, rawer recordings that often just have percussion and vocals as the dominant force – sometimes quite a surprise when you might hear a bigger star as part of the lineup. As with every collection on the Fremeaux label, the package offers up a lot of music for the price, and a very detailed set of notes in both French and English – with a total of 66 tracks in all – including work by Chano Pozo, Miguelito Valdez, Celina Y Reutilio, Mongo Santamaria, Celia Cruz, Sabu, Arsenio Rodriguez, Julio Gutierez, and others – as well as a set of field recordings done on acetate in 1940!
