✨✧ Al StewartPast Present & Future (3CD/DVD set) ... CD
Columbia/Esoteric (UK), 1973. New Copy 3CD/DVD ... $59.99 74.99
Quite a compelling album from the great and sometimes-overlooked Al Stewart – a set that really showcases the evolution in both his songwriting and subject matter – all at a level that seems wonderfully unconcerned with any sort of chart hit or commercial crossover! At this point, Al's kind of the perfect step beyond the earlier version of Brit singer/songwriters you would have found on labels like Harvest or Vertigo – steeped both in a creative sense of subject matter that seems influenced by Dylan, with an ability to spin out narratively unusual tunes that also get way past folksy cliches too – and which are delivered here with well-arranged, well-produced backings – but again, at a level that seems quite far from chartbound. Al's wonderful vocal style is a big part of the album's strength – really individual, and a sound we can fall in love with, no matter what the setting. Titles include "Warren Harding", "Roads To Moscow", "Last Day Of June 1934", "Nostradamus", and "Post World War Two Blues". This massive package is overflowing with great bonus material too! CD1 features a new 2024 remaster of the album – plus bonus tracks "Swallow Wind", and single versions of "Nostradamus" and "Terminal Eyes". CD2 features a 1974 live performance of nine tracks, recorded in Hampstead and remixed by Stephen W Tayler. CD3 features a new 2024 mix of the album by Stephen W Tayler – and the bonus track "Swallow Wind". Blu-Ray disc features 96 kHz / 24-bit new 5.1 Surround Sound & stereo mixes by Stephen W Tayler & remastered original stereo mix – both of the album, and the bonus track "Swallow Wind". CD
(Comes in a great 7" x 8" slipcover package, too!)

Arista, 1978. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A 70s gem from singer/songwriter Al Stewart – a set that was part of his long-overdue rise to global fame – after quietly giving the world a number of great and overlooked albums from the UK scene! The vibe here is similar to the preceding set – the classic Year Of The Cat – in that Al's got all of his sharp songwriting and very unique vocal phrasing intact – all set to sharp production that brings out the real strengths of his catchier moments, and certainly pushes Al far past the more Dylan-inspired territory of his earliest years. Titles include the wonderful title cut "Time Passages" – plus "Song On The Radio", "Life In Dark Water", "Valentina Way", "A Man For All Seasons", "Almost Lucy", "The Palace Of Versailles", and "Timeless Skies". Al StewartYear Of The Cat ... CD
Arista, 1976. Used ... $6.99
The biggest record that Al Stewart ever cut – as you no doubt know from the oft-played title track – but a set that also stands as a great testament to all the many years he'd been crafting fine music before fully getting the recognition he deserved! Stewart's got a way with words that's like few of his contemporaries – maybe a bit like Donovan, with whom he shares a similar vocal approach – and also a clear early love of Bob Dylan, yet an immediate evolution past that influence – so that the whole thing is very much in a world of Al's own, with some slight 70s mainstream production, but not enough to soften the music into more mainstream AOR – despite the fame of the hit. Titles include, of course, "Year Of The Cat", plus "One Stage Before", "Flying Sorcery", "Broadway Hotel", "Lord Grenville", "If It Doesn't Come Naturally Leave It", and "Midas Shadow". CD

A surprisingly wonderful album from Al Stewart – recorded early in his career, with a very different sound than his later work! Al here is steeped in a tradition that stretches back a few years hence – to Dylan and Leonard Cohen – but which also includes elements of the jazz-based British sound of the time, stretching the songs out with some really lyrical flourishes, a perfect mate for Al's Dononvan-ish vocal style. The tracks are all pretty compelling – slightly poetic, with traces of Nick Drake-styled folkisms – and the album makes us wish we had a way to discover more of Al's work from the time! Titles include "Once An Orange Always An Orange", "Amsterdam", "You Don't Even Know Me", "The News From Spain", "Songs Out Of Clay", "Night Of The 4th Of May", and "I'm Falling". CD

Strawberry (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 3CDs ... $29.99 36.99
A set that's way more than just the Irish rock extravangaza that you might expect from the title – as the collection really digs deep to show the way that older Celtic themes were influencing not just 60s and 70s bands from the Emerald Isle, but also groups from Wales, Scotland, and even France as well – tying things together and drawing a line through music in ways you might not expect! There's just a touch of folksy work here, mixed in with harder rock, prog, and some surprising blues and singer/songwriter material that really rounds out the package – all to showcase a range of artists who drew inspiration from older themes, but worked in ways that were very groundbreaking from the time – and still sound magnificently fresh all these many years later! As with other work on the label, the package features a great collection of notes that really illuminates the choice of tracks – 52 tracks in all, with work from Edwrad H Davis, Contraband, Bert Jansch, Hergest, Skibberdeen, Mushroom, Faces, Thin Lizzy, David McWilliams, Mellow Candle, Wishbone Ash, Woods Band, Archie Fisher, Trees, East Of Eden, Trader Horne, Skid Row, Taste, Huw Jones, Al Stewart, Bran, Spud, Endaf Emlyn, and many others. VariousBest Of Ace Rockabilly ... LP
Ace (UK), Late 50s. New Copy ... $13.99 26.99
You might know Ace Records as home to a fair bit of jazz, funk, and soul reissues over the years – but right from the start, the label's also had a keen ear for rockabilly – and can boast a decades-long devotion to the music, with releases that have really blown us away! This set digs back over material that Ace has reissued in previous decades – cuts that are both rare original singles, or unissued tracks – from important labels like Starday, Chess, Goldband, and Meteor – all hand-picked by Keb Darge – another British force in turning us on to great music over the years! The vinyl-only collection is full of gems – and titles include "All Dressed Up" by Jimmy Johnson, "Let's Go Bopping Tonight" by Al Ferrier & His Bopping Billies, "Nuthin But A Nuthin" by Jimmy Stewart & His Nighthawks, "Blue Jeans & A Boy's Shirt" by Glen Glenn, "The Woman I Love" by Gene Terry & His Kook Kats, "Jello Sal" by Benny Ingram, "Lonesome Baby Blues" by David Ray, and "Do Me No Wrong" by Pat Cupp & The Flying Saucers. VariousShake That Thing – The Blues In Britain 1963 to 1973 (3CD set) ... CD
Strawberry (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99 34.99
A really cool package that's way more than just the blues promised in the title – as the set brings together work from a variety of scenes and styles, all showing the many ways that American blues had such an impact on UK sounds from the mod generation onwards! There's definitely some tracks here that stick to a slavish representation of the original influence – but the set also includes all sorts of great divergences, tracing the path that so many artists would take from learning blues licks to really stepping out with new sounds of their own in psych, prog, hard rock, and other British styles to follow! There's also some surprising folk moments too – and over the course of 73 tracks, the box follows a fantastic journey – also supported with great notes too – through the work of artists who include Siren, Andy Roberts, Medicine Head, John Martyn, The Deviants, Pentangle, Killing Floor, Jo Ann Kelly, Jellybread, Alexis Korner, Rod Stewart, Mike Cooper, Savoy Brown, The Purple Gang, Al Jones, Bronx Cheer, Dave Ellis, Roger Hubbard, Taste, Incredible String Band, Ralph McTell, and many others. Decca (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Tripped-out genius from the end of the 60s – an assortment of great work from the UK Decca label, most of it unfamiliar to our ears until this set! Guitars are definitely out front in the mix, and the work marks the shift from tighter, modder London styles, into a darker and headier sound developed in the years after the summer of love. The depth of work here is really amazing – and goes way past any side of the late 60s you may know from classic rock radio or reissues in the US – and even the few familiar names on the package are represented by tunes we hadn't heard of, and which are a real treat! Notes are great, package looks excellent, and the CD's overflowing with great work – 25 titles that include "Nite Is Comin" by Warm Sounds, "Here Today Gone Tomorrow" by The Plague, "Gone Is The Sad Man" by Timebox, "Vacuum Cleaner" by Tintern Abbey, "Shades Of Orange" by The End, "Baby I Need You" by Curiousity Shop, "Turn Into Earth" by Al Stewart, "Woodstock" by Turquoise, "Colour Of My Mind" by The Attack, and "14 Hour Technicolour Dream" by The Syn. Decca (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A deep deep dig into some key years at Decca Records – that wonderful late 60s/early 70s period when it seemed that the label was just about the best thing going for the British rock underground! Although a semi-major at the time, Decca really had a reputation for turning out wonderful music – especially the kind of genre-busing Brit material that went way past the hits, and mixed up elements of rock, psyche, folk, fuzz, acid, jazz, and more! Some of the cuts here are by groups that rode the Decca wave over to US shores, but there's a lot more too that never made it past the Thames – really groovy British tracks, waiting to be rediscovered. Titles include "Contrasong" by Egg, "Practically Never Happens" by Ashkan, "Harpo's Head" by Stud, "Atmosphere" by Denny Gerrard, "Sharing" by Satisfaction, "The Sounds" by Ten Years After, "Secret" by Virgin Sleep, "Red Sky At Night" by The Accent, "Turn Into Earth" by Al Stewart, "I'm Coming Home" by The Deviants, "Jenra" by Davy Graham, "Cosmic Bride" by Zakarrias, "Space Shanty" by Khan, "I'm Coming On" by Ten Years After, "Spring's Sweet Comfort" by The Parlour Band, "Ballad For The Queen Of Outer Space" by Peter Brown, "Marie Antoinette" by Curved Air, and "New York Ladies" by Michael Chapman. A really groundbreaking collection – one that looks at the surprising rise of interest in spiritual ideas during the late 60s years of hippy-heavy rock music – served up here in a host of cuts by artists we never thought we'd see together in such a collection! These aren't obscure Christian rock bands or church groups – and instead, most of the music here is by bigger name groups who, during a time of peace and love, opened their ears to some of the more conventional expressions of the spirit – while still turning out music that was heavy on all the psych, prog, folk, and harder rock elements they would normally record! As always with Grapefruit, the notes are as essential as the overall track selection – a stunning mix of tracks from 57 different artists – with cuts from The Kinks, Strawbs, Incredible String Band, Amazing Blondel, Manfred Mann, Magna Carta, Hollies, Jethro Tull, Unicorn, Lindisfarne, Heron, Gordon Giltrap, Moody Blues, Fairport Convention, Matthews Southern Comfort, Nirvana, Al Stewart, Roy Wood, Bill Fay, and many others! Sun Ra ArkestraSwirling ... CD
Strut (UK), 2020. Used ... $8.99
Sun Ra left the planet a few decades ago, but his Arkestra has been going strong – really carrying the torch that the great one kept burning – and stepping out here in their first studio album in 20 years! The record is really something special – that core Sun Ra spirit, but taken in righteous territory that shows just how much the group has evolved in his absence – still with alto saxophonist Marshall Allen as the leader, but a combination of classic Arkestra members and younger musicians who have really helped continue that legacy of mentorship and spiritual exploration that was always the greater mission of the ensemble. The production is great – never too commercial, and handled brilliantly to capture the spirit of the group at their most expressive – with a lineup that also features Knoel Scott on alto, James Stewart on tenor and flute, Michael Ray and Cecil Brooks on trumpets, Vincent Chancey on French horn, Farid Barron on piano, Dave Hotep on guitar, Akatunde and Elso Nascimento on percussion, and Tara Middleton on vocals and violin. Titles include "Sea Of Darkness/Darkness", "Swirling", "Seductive Fantasy", "Sunology", "Door Of The Cosmos/Shy", "Satellites Are Spinning/Lights On A Satellite", "Infinity/I'll Wait For You", and "Angels & Demons At Play". During the late 30s and early 40s, the team of Slim Gaillard and Slam Stewart cut some of the grooviest little records ever pressed on shellac! The style of the music is part early R&B, part jazz vocal, and all hipster jiving and jamming! Slim had an influence on an entire century of hipsters – and this CD is the only one we've ever seen that does a good job of bringing together his early early work with good sound and notes on the material. The sound is amazing right from the start – heavy on acoustic instrumentation that offers up a much rootsier side of Stewart than his work with The Faces or Jeff Beck – yet at a level that still packs a hell of a lot of punch, thanks to these incredible drums that get the whole thing going right from the start – urging on the vocals to a crackling charm that's even more powerful here away from any big chart hits. Even familiar tunes are completely remade by the godlike early Rod – as you'll year on tracks that include "Only A Hobo", "Gasoline Alley", "My Way Of Giving", "Cut Across Shorty", "Lady Day", "Jo's Lament", and "Country Comforts". Video Arts (Japan), 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
A soulful little album from saxophonist Grant Stewart – one that's made even better by the appearance of Eric Alexander on two of the tracks in the set! The core group here features guitar, piano, bass, and drums – with Stewart in the lead, blowing tenor in a deep-toned way that clearly draws on the legacy of Hank Mobley, but which also moves around with a leaner, more fluid sensibility at times. The ballads and mellower numbers are often the best – especially the album's great title reading of "Estate" – but the uptempo tracks move along in a nice hardbop mode too, and titles include "Carving The Rock", "Soul Station", "Jacqueline", and "Cool Struttin". Alexander guests on the titles "3 For Carson" and "Systems" – making for a nice twin-tenor frontline! CD

Commodore/Mainstream, 1945. Near Mint- ... $2.99
A great document of an early all-star jazz concert – recorded at Town Hall by a young Bob Shad – who's clearly working here in the same live territory as producer Norman Granz! There's a great sense of variety going on here – and the record's maybe worth it alone for an excellent performance by a trio with Gene Krupa on drums and Charlie Ventura on tenor – with only piano, and no other instrumentation – a great mode for both players! The album also features work from a quintet led by pianist Teddy Wilson with Flip Phillips on tenor – on the tune "Sweet & Lovely"; a trio with Billy Taylor on piano and Stuff Smith on violin, on "Perdido"; a fantastic duet between Don Byas' tenor and Slam Stewart's bass on "I Got Rhythm"; and a Red Norvo group with Shorty Rogers on trumpet and Flip Phillips on tenor, on the tunes "The Man I Love" and "One Note Jive". Great work from this post-Soft Machine, post-Hatfield jazz rock combo – a group that draws tremendous creative inspiration from the talents of Dave Stewart on keyboards, Phil Miller on guitar, and Pip Pyle on drums! There's a bit of vocals on the record, but the main focus is clearly instrumentation – the kind of complex, jazz-leaning styles that first made the Canterbury scene one to watch in the UK – almost carried off here more perfectly than on earlier examples of the genre. The group gets some help from Alan Gowen on keyboards, Amanda Parsons on vocals, and Jimmy Hastings on flute – and titles include "Tenemos Roads", "Brujo", "Borogoves", and "Elephants". CD

A really cool collection – one that's filled with rare tracks from the postwar years, and which probably features a bit more hillbilly than western swing! That's hardly a problem, though – as both genres were really blurring boundaries at the time – so there's a nice shift in styles throughout, as these younger pioneers of the music were experimenting with great new sounds, and plenty of electrified instrumentation – all to cut the kind of singles that still sound pretty darn fresh after all these years! The 24 track set is brimming over with fresh gems – titles that include "Rock Love" by Nita & Ruby, "Indian Giver" by Redd Stewart, "Perdido" by Wade Ray, "I Got Loaded" by Zeb Turner, "Put Me To Bed" by Johnny Bond, "Honey I'm Lonesome" by Sheb Wooley, "Flyin Saucers Boogie" by Eddie Cletro, "Son Of Old Casey" by Johnny Bond, "Hoot Owl Boogie" by Red Foley, and "Tom Cattin Around" by Jimmy Selph. Audiographic, 2019. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
One of the most striking projects we've heard from Ken Vandermark in years – work with a younger group with a sound that seems equally balanced between free jazz, post-punk, and no wave energy – heard here on a set of live material, and a full session recorded in the studio! The quintet features two guitarists – Andrew Clinkman and Steve Marquette, one in each channel of the recording – alongside Macie Stewart on keyboards and violin, Phil Suddergerg on drums, and Ken Vandermark on reeds – all playing together at a level that bristles with the combination of electric and acoustic energy. The studio material is as intense as the live set – and as usual with Vandermark, there's some really surprising influences going into the songs – the live set is dedicated to Elza Soares, the studio one to Robert Bresson. Titles include "Key For 23", "Alphaville #2", "Trance", "L'Argent", "Roulette", "Two Or Three", "Baal", and "Porto". CD

Marge (France), 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most haunting albums ever from John Tchicai – a deeply spiritual session that feels like something he should have recorded back in the 70s! The songs are based around poems from John Stewart, and set to really evocative music by a trio that includes Tchicai on alto sax and Indian flutes, Margriet Naber on piano and keyboards, and Ernest Guiraud Cisse on kalimba, balafon, and percussion – instrumentation that easily makes the record one of the warmest Tchicai ever recorded. Some tunes feature John reciting words from Stewart's poems – but much of the focus here is instrumental, too – beautiful sounds that really offset the lyrics, and which make the whole thing feel like a spiritual soundscape that shows us a whole new side of Tchicai's genius. Titles include "Enorme Espace Inconnu", "On The Way To Church", "Masks", "Young Leaders", "Inscription For The 20th Century", and "The Owl". CD

Ace/Kent (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rare work from the early years of soul music – and a special set that focuses on sounds created in and around Los Angeles – a city that's not nearly as well known for 60s soul as Chicago, Detroit, or New Orleans! Yet during the postwar years, LA had just as much going on as those eastern cities – a huge new population influx, who'd move over from the south during the wartime years – and new labels that had cropped up to capture their sounds and serve their audience! 50s LA was already humming with R&B material, which gave the rising styles of soul plenty of places to get recorded – so much so, that there's even some work on this set that was never issued at the time! The vibe is great – similar to other Birth Of Soul sets from Ace/Kent – in that the music carries a bit of R&B and blues bite from earlier years, mixed with more romping and tighter soul styles – in a smoking set list of 24 tracks that include "But What About My Broken Heart" by Don Wyatt, "Everybody's Got A Lover But Me" by Richard Berry, "Have You Heard" by The Vows, "With These Hands" by The Wonders, "You Better Watch Out Girl" by The Imperialites, "Lose My Cool" by Ike & Tina Turner, "Let Him Walk Away" by Darlene Love, "My Pillow" by The Numbers, "Help Me With My Broken Heart" by Sylvester Stewart, "That Other Guy" by The Mandarins, "Don't Drop It" by The Question Marks, and "Young Lover" by Wilks & Wilkerson. Sweet slices of work from a hell of a jazz festival – the 1963 Antibes performances, served up here in some incredibly hip material! The set begins with early work from pianist Dollar Brand – whose trio sounds moody and amazing on "Antibes Jam", then gets joined the great vocalist Sathima Bea Benjamin on a version of "Prelude To A Kiss". Next up is the soulful sound of tenorist Klaus Doldinger, whose group includes Ingfried Hoffmann on piano – on a sensitive reading of "Like Someone In Love", which really shows off Klaus' under-recorded ballad style. The great trombonist Eje Thelin follows – leading a quintet with Ulf Andersson on tenor and Lars Joesten on piano – on the very long "Antibes Jam". A Polish group follows with another long track – a sharp-edged take on "Well You Needn't", led by tenorist Jan Wroblewski in a quartet with Wojciech Karolak on piano. Last up is singer Sarah Vaughan – working with the Kirk Stewart Trio – on the titles "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", "Tenderly", "A Taste Of Honey", and "Bill Bailey". CD

There's nobody like Billy Stewart at all – one of the first big overweight lovers in soul music, and still one of the best – and a godlike talent who was blessed with a voice that can still send us into raptures so many years later! Billy passed way to early to leave his mark in the wider annals of soul – but a record like this is more than enough of a legacy – as it's filled with just the sort of tunes that made Stewart so unique – especially the kind of slow-stepping ballads that still managed to come off with a really hard edge. The vocals are sublime – with the same reach as in his "Summertime" hit, but turned towards some more personal original material – including classics like "Sitting In The Park", "I Do Love You", "Fat Boy", "Fat Boy Can Cry", and "Strange Feeling". A pair of country gems from the great Gary Stewart – back to back in a single set! First up is Out Of Hand, a seminal album from Gary Stewart – one of those key 70s records that helped establish him as a rising star on the bandstand and the barrooms – thanks in part to some very booze-oriented tracks on the set! The record's got two classics that really define Gary's sound – the seminal "Drinkin Thing" and "She's Actin Single (I'm Drinkin Doubles)" – which are a great update of older drinking themed country cuts, but with a much more vibrant 70s approach, one that shows the way that rock music was sliding in to influence crossover stars like Gary! The whole thing's great, though – and the record's filled with other great tracks that include "Sweet Country Red", "Back Slider's Wine", "Draggin Shackles", and "Out Of Hand". Brand New is a set that Gary Stewart cut away from some of his major label fame, and a record that maybe has him burning even more strongly in the setting – working with a leaner sort of production that puts him in the territory of some of the younger up-and-comers of the generation, and which also shows just how much his 70s material might have been an influence to them! Stewart's still got that incredible voice that few others can match – inflections that really send the tunes home – on titles that include "Son Of A Honky Tonk Woman", "Brand New Whiskey", "An Empty Glass", "Murdered By Love", "Romona", and "I Get Drunk". The album's got a bit of the bossa you might expect from the title, but certainly a harder groove at times too – much more in the soulfully bold style of expression that we might expect from Washington and Nash – rhythmically complicated, with a fluid style that really seems to set fire to Stewart's stronger tenor lines. Other group members include Joe Cohn on guitar and Tardo Hammer on piano – the former of whom comes in a bit more strongly on the gentler tunes. All arrangements are by Grant, and titles include "Cheese Cake", "Plain Jane", "Little Melonae", "Alfred's Birthday", and "Recado Bossa Nova". CD

✨✧ Grant StewartSt Thomas – Grant Stewart Plays Sonny Rollins ... CD
Birds (Japan), 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great sounds from Grant Stewart – blowing here in a tribute to Sonny Rollins, with a tone that's got all the bold inventiveness of the master! The album's got a simple, unadorned approach – perfect for getting back to that classic Rollins groove of the late 50s and early 60s – with Grant's tenor proudly in the lead, but getting tight rhythm support from the trio of David Hazeltine on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Phil Stewart on drums! All tunes are either Rollins originals, or tunes he recorded famously as jazz instrumentals – and titles include "Airegin", "Mack The Knife", "Alfie's Theme", "St Thomas", "Paradox", and "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World". Abraxas, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Funky genius from the Hotlanta scene of the 70s – the one and only album recorded by Tommy Stewart, a huge force in some of the greatest club tracks of the south, including the massive Spirit Of Atlanta album! The record's a stone winner all the way through – filled with upbeat, uptempo tracks that really bring some funk into the dancefloor. The rhythms are tremendous – all very catchy and snapping, with a groove that goes way past the usual disco record, and which has made the album as much of a favorite amongst funk fans as it has for fans of classic club. Includes the classic groover "Bump and Hustle", plus loads of other excellent tunes like "Get Off Your Seats", "Make Happy Music", "Riding High", "Practice What You Preach", and "Atlanta Get Down". World Pacific/Mighty Quinn, 1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
An unusual session of trad jazz for the mostly-west coast World Pacific label – one that features guitarist Eddie Condon at the host of an all-star group that includes Rex Stewart on cornet, Bud Freeman on tenor sax, Herb Hall on clarinet, and Cutty Cutshall on trombone. The sound's in a strongly trad mode overall – but a number of tunes get some longer treatments here, and expand with freedoms of later recording modes. Titles include "Ostrich Walk", "Sensation Rag", "Livery Stable Blues", "Tiger Rag", "Reisenweber Rag", and "Lazy River". CD also features 4 bonus tracks that include "Skeleton Jungle", "Clarinet Marmalade", and "Satanic Blues". CD

✨✧ Small Faces78 In The Shade ... LP
Atlantic, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
78 in the shade, and 78 on the calendar too – 1978, a year when the reborn Small Faces were still sounding plenty darn great! The album follows nicely from the previous Playmates – with the strong rootsy undercurrents as that one, way more than in the group's earlier music – produced tightly, but still at a level that's free from commercial fluff or any too-easy attempts at a hit. Steve Marriott's presence in the lead is great – the the overall presentation is surprisingly free of hoke, and the album falls somewhere in the territory of the best solo material by Ronnie Laine, Rod Stewart, or Ron Wood. Titles include "Over Too Soon", "Brown Man Do", "Real Sour", "Filthy Rich", "Stand By Me", and "Let Me Down Gently". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gary StewartOut Of Hand ... CD
RCA/Hightone, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
A seminal album from Gary Stewart – one of those key 70s albums that helped establish him as a rising star on the bandstand and the barrooms – thanks in part to some very booze-oriented tracks on the set! CD

✨✧ Luis Vicente 4tetHouse In The Valley ... CD
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Portuguese trumpeter Luis Vicente has created a wonderful American/European quartet here – a group of really like-minded players who seem to have the easygoing interaction hinted at with their pose on the cover, delivered with the sonic promise of the speakers that stand above their heads in the image! The tracks are quite long, and the work has this way of rising, falling, and cascading wonderfully over passages that are sometimes quite free and unbridled, sometimes more tied together in these waves of energy – Vicente on trumpet, alongside John Dikeman on tenor, Luke Stewart on bass, and Onno Goevart on drums. Titles include "Anahata/Little Dance" and "Luisa's Laugh/House In The Valley". CD

PP ArnoldFirst Lady Of Immediate ... LP
Immediate (UK), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 38.99 About May 24, 2024 (delayed)
A really beautiful debut from PP Arnold – the American soul singer who first really made her mark in England, thanks to some key support from The Rolling Stones and other 60s rockers! Despite the British nature of this record – and despite the fact that production is by Mick Jagger, Andrew Loog Oldham, and others – the sound here is almost in the best US soul mode of the 60s, with full arrangements and sweeping strings that remind us of some of the strongest New York uptown soul of the mid 60s! Titles include "If You Think You're Groovy", "Born To Be Together", "The First Cut Is The Deepest", "Something Beautiful Happened", "Life Is But Nothing", "Speak To Me", and "Would You Believe". Arthur BlytheLight Blue – Arthur Blythe Plays Thelonious Monk ... LP
Columbia, 1983. Near Mint- ... $11.99 14.99
A wonderful record from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – a set that features his group working through a number of tunes by Thelonious Monk – but with very different arrangements and instrumentation that change things up completely! The set came at a time when Monk was receiving a lot of new attention in the world of jazz, and at a time when Arthur's star had risen too – and the meeting of forces is wonderful – as Blythe brings all sorts of new rhythms and tonal combinations to play with familiar tunes that really transform in the process. The group is a familiar one for Blythe – and features Abdul Wadud on cello, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, Bob Stewart on tuba, and Bobby Battle on drums! And while you might scratch your head at the tuba, the instrument is often used in ways that might follow older bassline styles – but with a quality that bridges the alto and cello in a great way. Titles include "Nutty", "Coming On The Hudson", "Light Blue", "Epistrophy", and "We See". LP, Vinyl record album

Bex BurchThere Is Only Love & Fear ... CD
International Anthem, 2023. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A sublime blend of jazz and organic sounds from multi-instrumentalist Bex Burch – a record that sounds as if it might have come from the studio of Carlos Nino, but which almost has a more personal, poetic sort of quality! There are some sounds of nature here – including bird calls from a sanctuary in Illinois – and even the more familiar instruments, like piano, drums, reeds, violin, or bass are often mixed with some "room" elements that really locate the recording in a special place – in ways that also seem to have some of that post-studio touches around the edges that we love from the International Anthem label. Burch clearly delivers most of the sound herself, almost doing an "in residence" to create the music – but she gets help along the way from guests who include Ben LaMar Gay, Dan Bitney, Rob Frye, Anna Butterss, and Macie Stewart – on titles that include "When Love Begins", "Don't Go Back To Sleep", "Dawn Blessings", "Follow Me I Make You Happy", "Start Before You're Ready", "Pardieu", and "If I Was You I'd Be Doing Exactly The Same".
