Al StewartYear Of The Cat (2CD edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Esoteric, 1976. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
The biggest record that Al Stewart ever cut – as you no doubt know from the oft-played title track – but a set that also stands as a great testament to all the many years he'd been crafting fine music before fully getting the recognition he deserved! Stewart's got a way with words that's like few of his contemporaries – maybe a bit like Donovan, with whom he shares a similar vocal approach – and also a clear early love of Bob Dylan, yet an immediate evolution past that influence – so that the whole thing is very much in a world of Al's own, with some slight 70s mainstream production, but not enough to soften the music into more mainstream AOR – despite the fame of the hit. Titles include, of course, "Year Of The Cat", plus "One Stage Before", "Flying Sorcery", "Broadway Hotel", "Lord Grenville", "If It Doesn't Come Naturally Leave It", and "Midas Shadow". CD features the bonus track "Belsize Blues" – and a full bonus live concert, recorded in Seattle in 1976, issued here for the first time ever. CD
(45th Anniversary Edition with a bonus live CD!)

✨✧ VariousKing Jammy's Dancehall Part 2 – 1984 to 1991 ... LP
Dub Store (Japan), 1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
King Jammy may have come to the reggae party a bit later than some of his famous predecessors – but the man's ears and studio talents helped provide a great way for the whole scene to move forward strongly – as you'll hear from these crucial productions from the key dancehall hears! Although the bigger version of that style meant chart crossover, and even a bridge to other musical communities – the sound here is nicely stripped-down, and very rootsy – definitely a bit digital in the production, but always with a richness that goes right back to the earlier dubplate years of the 70s. As with all Dub Store titles, the choice of cuts is wonderful, and the presentation is right up there with the best from Soul Jazz and 17 North Parade. Titles include "History" by Dennis Brown, "One Big Ghetto" by Half Pint, "Don't Take Your Gun To Town" by Al Campbell, "Crucial Boy (version)" by Prince Jammy, "Victim Of Babylon (version)" by King Jammy, "Love Light Of Mine" by Horace Andy, "Cry For The Youths" by Wackad, "Dangerous System" by Pad Anthony, "No Drugs" by Tinga Stewart, and "Move On" by Wailing Souls. Sun Ra ArkestraSwirling ... CD
Strut (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Sun Ra left the planet a few decades ago, but his Arkestra has been going strong – really carrying the torch that the great one kept burning – and stepping out here in their first studio album in 20 years! The record is really something special – that core Sun Ra spirit, but taken in righteous territory that shows just how much the group has evolved in his absence – still with alto saxophonist Marshall Allen as the leader, but a combination of classic Arkestra members and younger musicians who have really helped continue that legacy of mentorship and spiritual exploration that was always the greater mission of the ensemble. The production is great – never too commercial, and handled brilliantly to capture the spirit of the group at their most expressive – with a lineup that also features Knoel Scott on alto, James Stewart on tenor and flute, Michael Ray and Cecil Brooks on trumpets, Vincent Chancey on French horn, Farid Barron on piano, Dave Hotep on guitar, Akatunde and Elso Nascimento on percussion, and Tara Middleton on vocals and violin. Titles include "Sea Of Darkness/Darkness", "Swirling", "Seductive Fantasy", "Sunology", "Door Of The Cosmos/Shy", "Satellites Are Spinning/Lights On A Satellite", "Infinity/I'll Wait For You", and "Angels & Demons At Play". There's also a section of vintage NYC underground photos from the late 80s – plus photos of removed Confederate monuments by artist Allison Stewart, and shots of The White Stripes in a small Detroit club in 1999 – all presented on heavy paper, full color throughout, nice and hefty! ✨✧ Ron Wood & Ronnie LaneMahoney's Last Stand (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Atco/Real Gone, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A fantastic post-Faces project from guitarist Ron Wood and bassist Ronnie Lane – served up in a mode that's very similar to their previous group at its best, but with much more of an instrumental sound overall! Wood sings just a bit on the record, but most of the music is just a fast flurry of guitars jamming along with the rhythms – in that wicked blend of roots and more contemporary elements that always made the sound of The Faces such a great accompaniment to the vocals of Rod Stewart. Rod's not on this record at all, but the set does feature Faces members Kenney Jones on drums and Ian McLagan on piano and harmonium – as well as a guest appearance by Pete Townshend on one track too. Titles include "Car Radio", "Tonight's Number", "Chicken Wired", "From The Late To The Early", "Rooster Funeral", "Just For A Moment", "Mona The Blues", and "Woody's Thing". LP, Vinyl record album

John StewartOld Forgotten Altars – The 1960s Demos ... CD
Omnivore, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
Very early work from John Stewart – spare, stripped-down demo recordings done right before his groundbreaking albums on RCA – all served up in that special style that really made John a key bridge between folk and country at the end of the 60s! The music just features Stewart on vocals and guitar – and the earlier numbers maybe have a vocal approach that references some of the folk styles of the time – but as the music progresses, both the style and songs get more original – as all of the material is John's own. A few songs feature duets with Buffy Ford Stewart – and titles include "Lock All The Windows", "One More Chapter Is Gone", "Children Of The Morning", "Draft Age Today", "One Tiny Grain Of Sand", "Big Sur", "Mother Country", "July You're A Woman", and "Down The Highway You Go". Be! (Germany), 1963. New Copy ... $16.99
Sweet slices of work from a hell of a jazz festival – the 1963 Antibes performances, served up here in some incredibly hip material! The set begins with early work from pianist Dollar Brand – whose trio sounds moody and amazing on "Antibes Jam", then gets joined the great vocalist Sathima Bea Benjamin on a version of "Prelude To A Kiss". Next up is the soulful sound of tenorist Klaus Doldinger, whose group includes Ingfried Hoffmann on piano – on a sensitive reading of "Like Someone In Love", which really shows off Klaus' under-recorded ballad style. The great trombonist Eje Thelin follows – leading a quintet with Ulf Andersson on tenor and Lars Joesten on piano – on the very long "Antibes Jam". A Polish group follows with another long track – a sharp-edged take on "Well You Needn't", led by tenorist Jan Wroblewski in a quartet with Wojciech Karolak on piano. Last up is singer Sarah Vaughan – working with the Kirk Stewart Trio – on the titles "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", "Tenderly", "A Taste Of Honey", and "Bill Bailey". CD

Venus (Japan), 1998. New Copy (reissue)... $56.99
There's plenty of love in the tones of Steve Kuhn's piano here – that deeply expressive sound that we first came to love in his earliest years, matured beautifully in the subtle setting of a straight trio date like this – with help from Buster Williams on bass and Bill Stewart on drums! The title's a standard, but the record's hardly a rehash of too-familiar tunes – and instead, Kuhn unlocks most of the songs with a fresh look at their structures, and some really inventive work on piano during his solos. Titles include "Sunny", "Love Walked In", "Autumn Leaves", "You've Changed", "No Problem", and "Land Of The Living Dead". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Small FacesComplete Atlantic Recordings (Playmates/78 In The Shade – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, Late 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
Two later Small Faces albums – back to back on a single set, with bonus tracks too! First up is Playmates – a late 70s gem from the revived version of the Small Faces – a group who seem to have gone through the same maturity and richer understanding of their roots as the Faces – but who come across here in an even more sophisticated way! Steve Marriott's at the helm – on guitar and vocals – and has this understated approach that's a great change from the early days – as if he's got nothing to prove, but is completely confident in his way of putting a tune over – which makes the slight twang of most of these numbers wonderfully charming, and surprisingly solid. Titles include "High & Happy", "Saylarvee", "Find It", "Lookin For A Love", "Playmates", "Never Too Late", and "Tonight". 78 In The Shade is from 1978, a year when the reborn Small Faces were still sounding plenty darn great! The album follows nicely from the previous Playmates – with the strong rootsy undercurrents as that one, way more than in the group's earlier music – produced tightly, but still at a level that's free from commercial fluff or any too-easy attempts at a hit. Steve Marriott's presence in the lead is great – the the overall presentation is surprisingly free of hoke, and the album falls somewhere in the territory of the best solo material by Ronnie Laine, Rod Stewart, or Ron Wood. Titles include "Over Too Soon", "Brown Man Do", "Real Sour", "Filthy Rich", "Stand By Me", and "Let Me Down Gently". CD features the bonus tracks "Kayoed By Luv" and "Hungry & Looking". CD

Astral Spirits, 2020. New Copy 2LP ... Just Sold Out!
Luke Stewart is the bassist and the composer here – but the quintet is a powerhouse at every level – with reed work from Ken Vandermark and Ed Wilkerson, piano from Jim Baker, and drums from Avreeayl Ra – a lineup who do tremendous things with Luke's music! The tracks are all long, and build beautifully in a mixture of core ideas and individual improvisations – with a quality that almost evokes Wilkerson's important work in 8 Bold Souls, but an execution that's more flowingly spiritual overall – a richness in Stewart's music that brings out very different qualities in both Ed and Ken. The whole thing's great – the kind of record that will really establish Stewart as a musician to listen for in years to come – and titles include "The Scene", "Harp & Concrete Silhouette", "Awakening The Masters", and "Brown & Gray". Arista/Cherry Pop (UK), 1980s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Dancer and pop soul sensation Jermaine Stewart's bright, thumping and 80s dancefoor R&B that busted out huge on the pop charts for a moment! Jermaine was a dancer on Soul Train and background singer before busting out with some catchy R&B hits and the massive pop smash "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off". It's a fun record, and it's interesting to listen to the very 80s sound all these later, after its time in the dark outdated pop shadows, before it became a celebrated influence of the hippest post millennium DJs. Cultural chin-scratching aside, it's a straight up catchy, appealing album from a very talented Jermaine Stewart. Titles include the huge 80s emblem "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off" plus "Dance Floor", "Jody", "Versatile", "Frantic Romantic", "Don't Ever Leave Me", "Out To Punish", "Give Your Love To Me" and "The Word Is Out". ✨✧ VariousBirth Of Soul – Los Angeles Special ... CD
Ace/Kent (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare work from the early years of soul music – and a special set that focuses on sounds created in and around Los Angeles – a city that's not nearly as well known for 60s soul as Chicago, Detroit, or New Orleans! Yet during the postwar years, LA had just as much going on as those eastern cities – a huge new population influx, who'd move over from the south during the wartime years – and new labels that had cropped up to capture their sounds and serve their audience! 50s LA was already humming with R&B material, which gave the rising styles of soul plenty of places to get recorded – so much so, that there's even some work on this set that was never issued at the time! The vibe is great – similar to other Birth Of Soul sets from Ace/Kent – in that the music carries a bit of R&B and blues bite from earlier years, mixed with more romping and tighter soul styles – in a smoking set list of 24 tracks that include "But What About My Broken Heart" by Don Wyatt, "Everybody's Got A Lover But Me" by Richard Berry, "Have You Heard" by The Vows, "With These Hands" by The Wonders, "You Better Watch Out Girl" by The Imperialites, "Lose My Cool" by Ike & Tina Turner, "Let Him Walk Away" by Darlene Love, "My Pillow" by The Numbers, "Help Me With My Broken Heart" by Sylvester Stewart, "That Other Guy" by The Mandarins, "Don't Drop It" by The Question Marks, and "Young Lover" by Wilks & Wilkerson. Kenney tells his tale with a decidedly biased approach, but without any rancor towards his bigger bandmates – just a real love of the music, and the sense of boundless energy and adventure that especially graced his earlier years in rock and roll! A great collection of work – one that features a core album by the Delano Stewart, plus a huge amount of extra material that was also handled by producer Sonia Pottinger! The set begins with Stay A Little Longer – an excellent set by the under-recorded Delano Stewart – a singer who's clearly got inspiration from some of the sweet soul singers of the American scene, but who also works perfectly here with rocksteady rhythms – letting his voice bubble up and do all these wonderful things with the gentle grooves – all in modes that are very different than standard soul music! Titles include "Stay A Little Bit Longer", "Got To Come Back", "Rocking Sensation", "Wish It Would Last", "Tell Me Baby", and "Let's Have Some Fun". The set then moves on to include the Dr No Go compilation, plus a full CD titled Reggae Pressure too – 48 more tracks, all handled by the ultra-hip female Jamaican producer Sonia Pottinger – with work by The First Generation, Winston Wright, The Gaytones, Soul Twins, Conquerors, Victors, Delroy Wilson, Hippy Boys, Emotions, Roland Alphonso, Marcia Griffiths, Junior Soul, The Federals, Nora Dean, Dave Barker, and many others. Decca/Bear Family (Germany), Late 40s/Early 50s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rare hillbilly grooves from Decca Records – the kind of killer pre-country material that was not only a huge influence on rock and roll, but which will also show you that Elvis and Sun Records weren't the only people who'd figured out this kind of groove back in the 50s! The tracks are all upbeat, all very groovy, and filled with lots of wit and sweet instrumental touches – really moving the older modes of hillbilly music into the postwar years, often with a strong electric or steel guitar line instead of a fiddle or other stringed instrument! This is the sort of work that's been compiled on dodgy cheapo collections for years – but the Bear Family treatment here is superb – with great notes and wonderful sound, for titles that include "Pan American Boogie" by Lonnie Glosson, "I'm A Ding Dong Daddy" by Jimmy Atkins & His Pinetoppers, "Hesitation Boogie" by Hardrock Gunter, "I Mean I'm Mean" by Roy Duke, "Happy Go Lucky" by Autry Inman, "Blue Ribbon Boogie" by Chuck Murphy, "I'm Just Here To Get My Baby Out Of Jail" by Rusty Keefer, "Empty Seat In The Bar Room Booth" by Gene Stewart, "Inchin Up" by Tabby West, "Sixty Minute Man" by Roberta Lee & Hardrock Gunter, "Guitar Shuffle" by Hank Garland, and "Pretty Little Dedon" by Tabby West. 30 tracks in all! Saxophonist Chris Byars always has a great way of putting together a set of horn players – and here, his tenor is matched with alto from Zaid Nasser, bass clarinet from Stefano Doglioni, and trombone from John Mosca – all given piano-less accompaniment from the duo of Ari Roland on bass and Phil Stewart on drums! At some level, the music maybe echoes specific 50s modern modes – some west coast, some Gerry Mulligan styles – but there's also a much more contemporary vibe to the recording, one that comes partly from the mostly original material by the leader. The tunes bristle with a nice assortment of colors, and never overstate their inventiveness – and titles include "Nashville", "Arizona", "Keeper", "Moscow", "Third Culture Kid", and "Philadelphia". ✨✧ Casbah 73Pushin 40 ... CD
Hitop (Spain), 2007. Used ... $4.99
Pushin 40, but still sounding great – and the album may well be the best work so far we've heard from Casbah 73! As with previous efforts, the mainman here is Oliver Stewart – handling most of the guitar, keyboards, and beats – plus a bit of vocals too – all in a funky, soulful style that has plenty of 70s touches in the mix – but which is recast with a slightly more contemporary vibe! The album resonates nicely with the collections of older grooves we've heard from the Hitop label – and although much of the work is aimed at the dancefloor, it's nicely tuned with plenty of touches from classic club and funk! Titles include "Freshly Squeezed", with vocals by Majka Edjo – plus "Trippin On You", "El Trafico Jam", "One Small Step", "Joyous", "Sweet Jaguar", "Big Shoes Small Feet", and "Vinyl Junkie". CD

Jerry Goldsmith/Lionel NewmanBandolero ... LP
Project 3, 1968. Sealed Gatefold ... $7.99
A way cooler soundtrack than you might expect – not only different than the usual western score of the time, but surprisingly sophisticated work for a movie that featured stars like Dean Martin, Jimmy Stewart, Raquel Welch, and George Kennedy! The music was conducted by Lionel Newman, and it's often got this sense of spareness and space that really makes things magical – sounds just hanging there in air, isolated instruments moving in Morricone-like fashion, yet in ways that still occasionally have some of the boldness you'd expect from Jerry Goldsmith too. The themes are often personal, almost romantic – yet never soppy, and occasionally inflected with exotic elements that really keeps things interesting. Titles include "El Jefe", "The Bait", "Ambushed", "A Bad Day For Hanging", and "Sabinas". LP, Vinyl record album

Tubby HayesGrits, Beans, & Greens – The Lost Fontana Studio Session 1969 (2CD version) ... CD
Fontana/Universal (UK), 1969. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 29.99
A long-lost album from one of our favorite jazz talents of all time – British tenor legend Tubby Hayes, a player we'd easily place on a short list with giants like Dexter Gordon or Sonny Rollins! Like both of those players, Hayes has an incredible talent for longform solos that never lose their fire, direction, or imagination – a quality that emerges here maybe even more strongly than on some of the records that preceded it – as Hayes works with just a quartet, on long tracks that are really dominated by both his great sound, and the strong contributions of pianist Mike Pyne – an equal star on the set! At a time when British jazz was going for a lot of new recording modes, crossover styles, and other gimmicks, the whole thing is a back to basics record for Tubby – but also one that shows just how much he's grown as a soloist in just a few short years – really on fire, as the tenor is driven strongly by the efforts of Ron Mathewson on bass and Spike Wells on drums, completing a great quartet who really get the energy of their leader. Titles include a great version of the Duke Pearson tune "You Know I Care", a lovely take on "Where Am I Going", and the Hayes originals "For Members Only", "Rumpus", and "Grits Beans & Greens". Fantastic stuff – long overdue, and instantly a key addition to the Tubby Hayes Fontana catalog of the 60s! This great 2CD version features the full versions of all the sessions, with a number of takes on some of the tunes – including an unusual version of "Where Am I Going" with the guitar of Louis Stewart instead of the piano of Mike Pyne. Also has a hardcover package, and a nice booklet of notes! CD

International Anthem/Don Giovanni, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Damn incredible work from Irreversible Entanglements – a Philly group, but one who definitely belong in the special, small universe of the International Anthem label from Chicago! This set is even more fierce, more focused than their great debut – burning with righteous energy from a great small combo who play with fire and spirit throughout – and topped with knowledge and wisdom from Camae Ayewa, whose spoken words really hold the whole thing together! The record echoes spoken word/jazz experiments from the most righteous corners of the 70s spiritual avant underground – but has a very different energy that not only belies the younger status of the group, but also the importance of their very contemporary message. Other members include Keir Nueringer on tenor, Aquiles Navarro on trumpet, Luke Stewart on bass, and Tcheser Holmes on drums – and all members also play percussion – on titles that include "Bread Out Of Stone", "The Code Noir/Amina", "Who Sent You – Ritual", "No Mas", and "Blues Ideology". Makaya McCravenIn The Moment ... LP
International Anthem, 2015. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $59.99
A totally unique record from drummer Makaya McCraven – and a great one too! The set's built around improvised performances recorded over the period of a year – with some of Chicago's best underground jazz talents, including Matt Ulery on bass, Marquis Hill on trumpet, Jeff Parker on guitar, Justefan on vibes, Desean Jones on tenor, Tony Barba on tenor and electronics, and Josh Abrams on bass – and the performances are then edited down into these shorter, focused tracks that are really wonderful! The music is still quite live in its approach at most moments – and often given a very rhythmic pulse in the way it's put together, but never in any sort of hokey or heavy-handed remix way. The basslines are wonderful – full, round, and very modal – and titles include "The Jaunt", "Time Travel", "The Encore", "The Drop", "Finances", "Just Stay Right There", and "Three Fifths A Man". Pop GroupY (3CD definitive edition) ... CD
Radarscope/Mute, 1979. New Copy 3 CDs ... $22.99
A seminal punk-funk classic from the end of the 70s – one that's as brilliantly abrasive and brashly fresh today as it was when it was released! The group are working here in equal parts dub, funk, and lots of scratchy guitars and heady bass – with a style that would later be picked up more strongly by On-U in the 80s, but which is executed here with a much clearer vision that's free of any of the cliches that would later overcome the genre. Even the politics are surprisingly pointed – and Paul Stewart's vocalizations of most of the tunes is really dead on the money! Titles include "Thief Of Fire", "Snowgirl", "Blood Money", "We Are Time", "Don't Sell Your Dreams", "Words Disobey Me", and "Don't Call Me Pain". CD2 features lots of bonus tracks – some from an unreleased album – including "She Is Beyond Good & Evil", "Kiss The Book", "Thief Of Fire (bass addict)", "Words Disobey Me (Dennis the Menace mix)", "Don't Sell Your Dreams (a mix)", "3:38", "Boys From Brazil (ridge reels)", and "Blood Money (slow thief)". As revered as Sun Ra is, was, and will forever be as one of the great avant garde bandleaders and all around musical innovators of the 20th Century, his work as an Afro-futurist poet is overlooked. This book aims to change that, but not in a precious way at all. It's sort of presented as a fun little pulp paperback. Includes a nice forward by Amiri Baraka and an intro by science fiction historian Bhob Stewart, who does a terrific job of detailing Ra's 60s poetry and his quite genuine relevence in that realm! A really great funky moment from guitarist John Scofield – kind of a bridge between the chromatic hues of his music from the 80s, and the tighter, sharper direction he'd take in years to come! The set has some classic-styled soul jazz elements at the core, really living up to the cover image – including Hammond from Larry Goldings and tenor from Eddie Harris – both of whom really deepen the sound of the record, especially when Scofield is still sliding out into some of the fuzzier tones in his bag. Rhythms are nice and tight too – with Dennis Irwin on bass, Bill Stewart on drums, and Don Alias on percussion – and tracks include "Don't Shoot The Messenger", "She's So Lucky", "Do Like Eddie", "Dark Blue", "I'll Take Les", and "Out Of The City". Buddah, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Totally great – and a record you probably know nothing about! The album's one of the greatest ever to come out of the Hotlanta scene of the 70s – a tight batch of funk tracks with a heck of a lot of guitar. The set was produced by Tommy Stewart, of "Bump and Hustle" fame – and it's got an unusual style that's equally appealing to fans of funk, and fans of clubbier music – lots of tight playing, hard riffing, and longer grooves that soar along with impeccable grace. The whole thing's almost like the classic Wood Brass & Steel album – but with some rougher edges that make it even better! Includes the great tracks "Vine City" and "Messin Around", both of which are very long funk tracks, plus shorter cuts that are just as funky, like "Down Underground", "Freddie's Alive and Well", and "Buttermilk Bottom". Don't pass this up, it's a funky monster classic! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Larry CarltonWith A Little Help From My Friends/Singing Playing ... CD
BGO (UK), 1968/1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two early gems from guitarist Larry Carlton – back to back on a single CD! First up is the Uni album With A Little Help From My Friends – pre-fusion, and done at a time when a whole generation of guitarists were trying to find a way forward – and experimenting in a number of different formats! The vibe here is maybe like some of the Wes Montgomery or George Benson Verve or CTI records of the late 60s – really chromatic guitar lines that carve out a beautiful lead over some arrangements that are fuller than a combo, but never overdone – arranged by Foster Wakefield, who we don't know at all – but with the tasteful spaciousness of a Claus Ogerman or a Don Sebesky! Larry sounds great on the record – really working out some lines that are quite different than a jazz guitarist might have sounded a few years before – and strongly pointing the way to his future. Titles include "With A Little Help From My Friends", "Don't You Care", "Mac Arthur Park", "Odd Couple", "Eleanor Rigby", and "Monday Monday". Next is Singing/Playing, and the title's no lie – as Larry Carlton steps out in a warmly-produced session that's got a really sweet LA studio vibe – one that mixes together early fusion backings and compressed vocalizations – in a way that maybe makes the whole thing feel like an overlooked A&M Records gem from the Nick DeCaro years! Larry's got this easygoing vocal style that's very down to earth, and set up in these sweet arrangements directed by Stewart Levine – soulful, jazzy, and with occasional currents of funk – and with some great keyboard touches from MIchael Omartin next to Larry's guitar and vocals. Titles include the great "American Family", plus "Wavin & Smilin", "Easy Evil", "Free Way", "Captain Captain", and "With Respect To Coltrane". CD

Virgin/Esoteric (UK), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The seminal debut of Hatfield & The North – a group that maybe came a bit late in the UK prog scene of the early 70s, but who had a huge influence for decades to come! The quartet are a late transformation of the earlier Canterbury sound – leaner, maybe jazzier, and with a great ear for warm tones and organic elements that help hold the complexity of their music to the surface of the planet. Plus, there's this more open, honest quality to some of the work – especially the vocals – that quality, say, that made Matching Mole so different than Soft Machine. The whole lineup is an all-star affair – Richard Sinclair on bass and vocals, Pip Pyle on drums, Phil Miller on guitars, and Dave Stewart on organ, piano, and tone generator – plus some nice guest sax and flute from Geoff Leigh of Henry Cow, and vocals from Robert Wyatt on one track. Titles include "The Stubbs Effect", "Calyx", "Licks For Ladies", "Bossa Nochance", "Big Jobs No 2", "Lobster In A Cleavage Probe", and "Rifferama". A fantastic mix of jazz and spoken word performance – delivered in a very righteous style that takes us back to the best vintage sides by artists like Wanda Robinson or Jayne Cortez! The instrumental sounds are as powerful as the lyrics – and together, they make for a record that would have been a shining jewel of the loft jazz generation, had it been recorded back in the day – but at a level that's even more incredible for a contemporary set. A mad mix of space-age instrumentals, groovy vocal tunes, and lots lots more – and definitely one of the coolest compilations we've ever seen! The cover states that "a galaxy of stars goes where no other compilation has ever gone before" – and we can definitely agree with that claim, given the unique feel of the music, and the wonderful assortment of tracks in the set! The set list draws on many different genres – early rock, offbeat country, easy instrumentals, sound library gems, and lots more – all to bring together a startling array of sounds that's more than enough to send you into outer space on your own. Weird tracks are mixed nicely with tuneful numbers – so that there's a really great sense of discovery as the set rolls on – a vibe that's as well-chosen as some of Ace Records' Halloween compilations, but in a sci fi sort of mode. Fantastic UK soul from PP Arnold – the American soul singer who first started out as an Ikette, but really made her mark in England – thanks to some key support from The Rolling Stones and other 60s rockers! Despite the British nature of the material – mostly recorded for the rock-based Immediate label – and despite the fact that production is by Mick Jagger, Andrew Loog Oldham, and others – the sound here is almost in the best US soul mode of the 60s, with full arrangements and sweeping strings that remind us of some of the strongest New York uptown soul of the mid 60s! 2CD set features 25 tracks in all – all from 1967 and 1968 – including one number with Rod Stewart and one with The Small Faces. Titles include "Speak To Me", "Am I Still Dreaming", "To Love Somebody", "Angel Of The Morning", "Would You Believe", "Life Is But Nothing", "First Cut Is The Deepest", "Everything's Gonna Be Alright", "Come Home Baby", and "Groovy". ✨✧ Brian AugerTiger ... CD
Atom (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A wealth of early work from UK Hammond hero Brian Auger – material from a variety of different settings, and which really expands things nicely past his famous albums of the time! As with much Auger material, the dates and session details are a bit hazy, but the quality is superb – and most tracks feature Brian really wailing away on the organ, in a mix of inspirations from jazz and soul, all filtered through a modder late 60s London mode! Some tracks feature Auger vocals, a number of others have Julie Driscoll singing in the lead – and a few tracks feature Brian with Rod Stewart's early group Steampacket, and another features Jimmy Page and Sonny Boy Williamson. 25 tracks in all – and titles include "Baby Come Back To Croydon", "Little Girl How Old Are You", "The Goat", "Foolkiller", "Own Up Lady Astor", "Tiger", "Don't Send Me No Flowers", "Walkin", "Holy Smoke", "Baby Baby Baby", "Don't Do It No More", "I Didn't Want To Have To Do It", and "Shadows Of You". ✨✧ Arthur BlytheElaborations/Light Blue/Put Sunshine In It ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A trio of 80s albums from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – brought together in a 2CD set! First up is Elaborations – a beautiful moment in which the loft jazz generation really got a chance to shine in the mainstream – and mostly without any sense of overdone attempts at commercialization! The album's a great summation of all the ideas that reedman Arthur Blythe was cooking up in the 70s underground – performed here with a hip group that includes Blythe on alto, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, Abdul Wadud on cello, Bobby Battle on drums, Bob Stewart on tuba, Wilbur Morris on bass, and Mohammad Abdullah on congas – some of them players who you might never have expected to be recording for Columbia Records! And yet the setting of the record doesn't interfere with their creativity at all – and instead, really seems to give Blythe and the group the sort of focus that only makes their ideas even better – on titles that include "Elaborations", "Metamorphosis", "Sister Daisy", "Shadows", and "The Lower Nile". Light Blue is a wonderful record from saxophonist Arthur Blythe – a set that features his group working through a number of tunes by Thelonious Monk – but with very different arrangements and instrumentation that change things up completely! The set came at a time when Monk was receiving a lot of new attention in the world of jazz, and at a time when Arthur's star had risen too – and the meeting of forces is wonderful – as Blythe brings all sorts of new rhythms and tonal combinations to play with familiar tunes that really transform in the process. The group is a familiar one for Blythe – and features Abdul Wadud on cello, Kelvyn Bell on guitar, Bob Stewart on tuba, and Bobby Battle on drums! And while you might scratch your head at the tuba, the instrument is often used in ways that might follow older bassline styles – but with a quality that bridges the alto and cello in a great way. Titles include "Nutty", "Coming On The Hudson", "Light Blue", "Epistrophy", and "We See". Put Sunshine In It is a record that really seems to live up to its title – as the sound here is maybe a little bit sunnier than on some of Arthur Blythe's previous albums! The record features heavy contributions from Todd Cochran – aka Bayete – who plays keyboards on most numbers, and introduces more of an electric vibe to the album than previous Blythe outings. The style isn't entirely fusion, but it's definitely warm and sunny – and Arthur responds as such with his solo work – a tight tighter and less edgey, but still nicely soulful. The album features a nice remake of the tune "Sentimental Walk" – from the movie Diva – plus the tracks "Uptown Strut", "Silhouette", "Put Sunshine In It", and "Tumalalumah". CD

✨✧ Blossom Dearie/Bobby JasparAdorable Blossom Dearie (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A great look at the earliest years of the lovely Blossom Dearie – and a set that also features a surprising amount of work from reedman Bobby Jaspar, who was making big waves on the Paris jazz scene at the same time the young Blossom was living in France! CD1 features the pair together – a lovely set of duos with Bobby on flute and Blossom on piano, pulled from a rare 7" EP – which is then followed by a set of piano instrumentals lead by Dearie, from the album Jazz Sweet – a French-only release! The CD then follows with Blossom's great vocal jazz group The Blues Stars Of France – with tracks from both their first album and their rare EP – great vocal harmony numbers of bebop tunes. CD2 features Blossom's famous self-titled album for Verve – a great American debut – but then follows with lots more rare material, including a Blue Stars 7" single, a rare Dave Lambert & Buddy Stewart 78rpm single, and even other vocal tracks by Annie Ross and King Pleasure. CD3 mostly features material that focuses on the talents of Bobby Jaspar on flute – some under his own leadership, plus more with other artists and groups, including work with singer Helen Merrill, guitarist Rene Thomas, and trombonist JJ Johnson. 75 tracks in all – and a booklet of notes! ✨✧ Fletcher HendersonLes Trompettes De Fletcher 1923 to 1941 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1920s/1930s/Early 40s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A special set of music that focuses on the role of the legendary trumpeters who worked in the band of Fletcher Henderson – musicians who include Louis Armstrong, Rex Stewart, Bobby Stark, Roy Eldridge, Joe Smith, and Tommy Ladnier – all presented here with well-done remastering that offers up their performances with a vibrancy that maybe surpasses other collections of his music! The sonic shift is subtle – these sides never sound too clean or coldly processed – and there's a definite presence of the trumpets, which are sometimes lost in some of the older mixes – in recordings that also feature contributions from Coleman Hawkins on tenor, and vocals from both Bessie Smith and Ethel Waters. The 3CD collection is filled with gems from one of the most important groups in early jazz – 71 tracks in all, with notes in French and English. CD

✨✧ VariousChicago Radio Soul ... CD
Chess/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great look at a special side of the Chess Records soul catalog of the 60s – tracks that were very big on Chicago airwaves in the label's home town, yet which hardly got much play at all in the rest of the country! The collection's put together by Robert Pruter – the man who (literally) wrote the book on Chicago soul – and it's a wonderful portrait of soul in the Windy City of the 60s, with strands of music that nicely differ from the overplayed hits in later years. The collection also stands as a super-strong tribute to the never-ending genius of Chess Records – a label that never seems to let us down whenever we uncover a soul single we've never heard before! Titles include "Shy Guy" by The Radiants, "No Faith No Love" by Mitty Collier, "I Can't Help Myself" by The Gems, "Love Is A 5 Letter Word" by James Phelps, "A Thousand Miles Away" by Jo Ann Garrett, "Selfish One" by Jackie Ross, "Strange Feeling" by Billy Stewart, "The Creeper" by Freddy Robinson, "Peak Of Love" by Bobby McClure, "Lonely Girl" by Andrea Davis, "This Heart Of Mine" by Tony Clarke, "Bossa Nova Bird" by The Dells, and "Only Time Will Tell" by Etta James. ✨✧ VariousHolding Things Together – The Merle Haggard Songbook ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Merle Haggard isn't just one of the greatest country singers of all time – he's also a hell of a songwriter, too – one who emerged fully-formed into the glory of his Capitol Records years – releasing album after album that were full of amazing original compositions! Merle's own recordings of his songs have gone on to shape the sound of country music for decades – but right from the start, his music was grabbed up and interpreted by singers in a variety of different modes – sometimes as a way to make older artists sound hip, and more importantly as a way for younger acts to give ol' Hag the nod, and fortify their rootsy inclinations with a strong dose of straight country! This set does a great job of mixing up both sides of that coin, and throws in a few surprises along the way – finally giving Merle his due when it comes to the pen, on tracks that include "The Bottle Let Me Down" by Emmylou Harris, "I Must Be Somebody Else You've Known" by International Submarine Band, "Sing Me Back Home" by The Every Brothers, "Life In Prison" by The Byrds, "Kern River" by Dave Alvin, "Legend Of Bonnie & Clyde" by Tammy Wynette, "White Line Fever" by Flying Burrito Brothers, "Okie From Muskogee" by Roy Rogers, "Swinging Doors" by Jerry Lee Lewis, "Today I Started Loving You Again" by Wynn Stewart, "Rainbow Stew" by Country Joe McDonald, "Honky Tonk Night Time Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, "Just Because You Can't Be Mine" by Bettye Swann, and "Silver Wings" by The Knitters. Expansion (UK), 2001. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great solo debut from Denise Stewart – the smooth modern soul diva who's probably best known for her work on recent albums by guitarist Craig T Cooper. Craig handles the backings on most of this set – giving Denise the same warm jazzy finish he brings to his own sides, but pitching the mix a bit more towards the modern R&B style that's Denise's main strength on the set. Titles include "The Night Before", "Nobody Else Will Do", "Drifting", "Love Is", "Decide On Me", "Let Me Know", and "One Of Those Things". CD

✨✧ George DuningBell, Book, & Candle ... LP
Colpix, 1959. Very Good+ ... $34.99
A wonderful jazzy soundtrack from the end of the 50s – written for the ultra-cool film Bell, Book, & Candle – which starred Kim Novak and Jimmy Stewart in a comedy about beatnik witches in New York! Much of the soundtrack has a cool beat jazz sort of feel to it – and many tracks feature strong solo work by Pete and Conte Candoli, who also perform a bit in nightclub scenes in the film. Other tracks have a slightly more orchestral feel, but one that's still quite light, given the nice themes in the movie – and which also features some playful bits that still keep things jazzy. Titles include "Way Out Calypso", "Send Me Nicky", "Pyewacket Returns", "Zodiac Blues", "L'Assassin Ennuye", and "Shep Shook". LP, Vinyl record album
