Jarrod LawsonBe The Change ... CD
Dome (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
Really fantastic work from Jarrod Lawson – one of those underground singers who should be huge, if the world had any justice! Lawson's a cut above, and completely his own singer – the kind of individual talent that comes along once in a generation, like Al Jarreau or Michael Franks – and like both of them, he's got a way of singing in a style that's steeped in jazz, but which comes across with a soulful palette that's all his own – the kind of mode that grabs you right away, and makes you know that you're listening to something really unique, really different, and really special! And while we've loved Lawson before, this album is his crowning achievement to date – the kind of set that really pushes him over the top, and which earns the term "instant classic" in our book. Lawson plays plenty of sweet keyboards next to his amazing vocals – and titles include "Be The Change", "Universal Chord", "Evalee", "Connected", "Embrace What We Are", "Soul Symphony", "Love Isn't Always Enough", "I'll Be Your Radio", and "How Long". ✨✧ Gregory PorterTake Me To The Alley ... LP
Blue Note, 2016. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
The greatness of Gregory Porter continues to grow and grow – as the vocalist keeps moving past the straighter jazz of his roots, into a role as one of the greatest soul singers of the 21st Century! Porter's got a depth and maturity that few folks have had in recent years – especially in the realm of male vocals – very much that manner of important 70s singers like Bill Withers, Billy Paul, or Al Jarreau – who were schooled in jazz, but worked more in soulful styles that gave them a wider reach, and helped them to find a very personal voice in the process! We'd easily place Gregory in that legacy – one that he's definitely earned by this point – and he sounds arguably even better here than on his debut for Blue Note – working with arrangements from co-producer Kamau Kenyatta, who mixes in just the right current of jazz to keep things on track with the energy we first loved in Porter's first records – while still really letting his new energy open up and soar. Titles include "Holding On", "Insanity", "Don't Lose Your Steam", "Daydream", "Don't Be A Fool", "More Than A Woman", and "French African Queen". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousSongs Of Leon Russell ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Leon Russell's a shaggy-haired legend, with one of the most distinct styles in 70s rock – but the singer was also a songwriter and key studio talent in the 60s – already a very big influence in American music, long before he got his time in the spotlight! Russell's always known for having a deeply soulful approach to his music – and that quality definitely shows through here – in material that's all penned by Leon, and taken on by a host of talents in a nicely wide range of styles – soul, rock, country, and even a bit of jazz – all showing the depth of a Leon Russell tune, and how much it can open up in different sorts of interpretations! The set follows in the best tradition of the songwriter series on Ace Records – opening up our understanding of a figure in the backstage, but who lurks behind such key cuts as "Make Love To The Music" by Maria Muldaur, "Alcatraz" by Nazareth, "This Masquerade" by George Benson, "Love's Supposed To Be That Way" by California, "The Loser" by Gary Lewis & The Playboys, "Lonesome & A Long Way From Home" by Earl Scruggs, "Rainbow In Your Eyes" by Al Jarreau, "Land Of Oz" by Le Cirque, "Me & Baby Jane" by Jose Feliciano, "Delta Lady" by Joe Cocker, "Groupie" by Delaney & Bonnie, "Time For Love" by Randy Crawford, "Raspberry Rug" by Bobby Whitlock, "You Look Like The Devil" by Willie Nelson, and the duet on "If It Wasn't For Bad" between Elton John and Leon Russell. 21 tracks in all – and detailed notes on each track! ✨✧ Public Enemy, EU & OthersDo The Right Thing – Soundtrack ... LP
Motown, 1989. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The classic soundtrack to Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing – lead, of course, by Public Enemy's "Fight The Power" – and beyond that is a pretty wonderful, and not always as intense cross-section of some of the finer urban soul and New Jack Swing, circa '89, breezy vocal-centric R&B, a touch of Latin and Afro-Carribbean pop. The Bed-Stuy melting pot bubbles over to tragic consequences in the film, but the diverse soundtrack is plenty harmonious, and sounds fresh to this day. Includes "My Fantasy" by Teddy Riley featuring Guy, "Never Explain Love" by Al Jarreau, "Party Hearty" by EU, "Tu Y Yo" by Ruben Blades, "Can't Stand It" by Steel Pulse and "Don't Shoot Me" by Take 6. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some wear and lighty bent corners.)

✨✧ Mel DancyLittle Lovin ... CD
Mainstream/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
We've only ever seen this one record by singer Mel Dancy, and it's a groovy little set that makes us wonder why he never moved on to greater fame! The record's got this mix of soul and jazz at the core – with occasional hints at the territory that would be opened up later in the 70s by singers like George Benson or Al Jarreau – that more expressive, yet always swinging style that vocalists of their generation worked in a space past older jazz modes. Wade Marcus handles the arrangements here – working in warm jazz instrumentation with some larger orchestrations – in a lineup that includes Cornell Dupree on guitar and the great Paul Griffin on piano and keyboards. Titles include "Day Star", "This Time We'll Know Him", "Beginning To Feel The Pain", "Wasn't It You", "See Saw", "Just A Little Lovin", and "Let Me Do What I Want To Do". CD
(2017 pressing – includes obi.)
