Al JarreauJarreau ... LP
Warner, 1983. Near Mint- ... $3.99
A massive set from Al Jarreau – a set that gave the singer one of his smoothest hits of all time, yet still kept him very firmly in the sort of sophisticated territory that set him apart from most of his contemporaries! The sound here is often a lot more understated than you'd expect – mellow jazz, with light instrumentation, and less of the too-commercial modes that other singers were being hung with at the time – an approach that preserves all the wonderful lightness in Al's vocals – that mix of jazzy scatting roots and warmly flowing soul that makes most of the early Jarreau albums well worth tracking down. The set leads off with the classic "Mornin" – and other cuts include "I Will Be Here For You", "Step By Step", "Black & Blues", "Not Like This", "Love Is Waiting", and "Trouble In Paradise". LP, Vinyl record album
(German pressing, including the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a promo sticker.)

Freddie HubbardLove Connection ... LP
Columbia, 1979. Near Mint- ... $7.99
A lost treasure from the overlooked late 70s jazz years at Columbia! The album's got Freddie Hubbard working with arranger Claus Ogerman on some expansive tracks that go beyond his earlier work in the decade – sometimes blowing mellow notes over larger orchestrations, other times working in a surprisingly lean groove that has some really soulful touches! The approach shifts from track to track, but all titles are long, and the overall effect is really great. Al Jarreau guests on a sweet vocal version of "Little Sunflower", and other players on the set include Joe Farrell and Tom Scott on reeds, and Chick Corea, who plays most of the keys on the set. Titles include "Lazy Afternoon", "This Dream", "Brigitte", and "The Love Connection". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a gold promo stamp.)

Jarrod LawsonJarrod Lawson ... CD
Jarrod Lawson, 2014. Used ... $6.99
A stunning debut from Jarrod Lawson – a singer we fell in love with right away – and who we'd rank right up there with some our favorite mellow soul artists of the 70s! Yes, the cover's got a look that's more indie rock – but Jarrod's got this righteous vibe and sense of flow that seems to tie together distant strands of influence – from Marvin Gaye to Gil Scott Heron to jazz singers like Al Jarreau, Kurt Elling, or Mark Murphy! Backings are jazzy, but with a focused, soulful groove – warmed up by keyboards, but kept fresh with lots of live instrumentation that really matches the rich sense of inflection in Lawson's voice – an amazing range, but one that's never overstated, overdone, or overused. All the tracks are originals – and the record's one that you'll be spinning for years to come! Titles include "Sleepwalkers", "Walk In The Park", "Redemption", "Needed", "Everything I Need", "All That Surrounds", "Spiritual Eyes", and "Together We'll Stand". CD

A sequel to Nas's legendary Lost Tapes with beats by a who's who of post-millennium hip hop production heavyweights and versatile rhymes by one of best ever! The original Lost Tapes was a game changer, a raw showcase for his rhymes style at it's core essence that followed a hit and miss creative and commercial run. Nas has been comfortable in his legacy and doing pretty solid work in the years leading up to Lost Tapes 2, so this one on more of a worthwhile bonus batch of worthy for his later career rather than a restatement of core strength. Jill Scott & OthersCollaborations ... CD
Hidden Beach, 2007. Used 2 CDs ... $2.99
Jill Scott's a singer with a mighty generous spirit – and in addition to her own (all too few) recordings over the years, she's made some tremendous appearances on records under the leadership of other artists – a good deal of which are included in this set! Jill's not the kind of singer to just sleepwalk into the studio and deliver a few standard vocals when making a guest shot – and instead, she brings a new sense of life and energy to each different appearance in the set – coming across with a street-heavy vibe one minute, a more laidback cosmic mode the next, and a more classically-tuned soul sound at still another point. The set's a great illustration of the depths of Scott's rich talents – and even though we'd rather have Jill spending more time in the studio recording her own music, we're still plenty happy to have so many of her great guest appearances together in one package like this! CD features 14 tracks in all – including "Love Rain" with Mos Def, presented in "head nod" and "coffee shop" remixes – plus "Said Enough" with The Isley Brothers, "One Time" with Eric Roberson, "Good Morning Heartache" with Chris Botti, "Daydreamin" with Lupe Fiasco, "Let Me" with Sergio Mendes & Will I Am, "8 Minutes To Sunrise" with Common, "Sometime I Wonder" with Darius Rucker, "Slide" with Jeff Bradshaw, "The Rain" with Will Smith, and "God Bless The Child" with Al Jarreau & George Benson. CD
(Also features a bonus CD – with material by Hidden Beach artists who include Jill Scott, Keite, Jeff Bradshaw, Peter Black, Sunny Hawkins, and Onitsha.)

Right Stuff, 1960s/1970s/1980s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The Slow Jam Christmas continues – with a host of mellow Holiday soul tracks from the 60s through the 80s! The set mixes up the groove a fair bit as the titles roll on, but the overall feel here is still quite solid – and we're surprised at how nice a few of the older tunes sound next to more recent numbers. Titles include "Soul Santa" by Brook Benton, "Christmas Love" by Rotary Connection, "Merry Christmas" by Darryl Tookes, "I Can Hardly Wait Til Christmas" by The O'Jays, "Auld Lang Syne" by Lou Rawls, "I'll Be Home For Christmas" by Al Green, "Christmas Song" by Al Jarreau, "My Christmas Gifts" by Alexander O'Neal, and "A Very Special Holiday" by The Whispers. Brenda RussellTwo Eyes ... LP
Warner, 1983. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Slyly seductive work from Brenda Russell – a singer who's clearly in a class of her own here, and sounding wonderful on this classic album from the early 80s! Brenda's style is nicely diverse – part balladry, part sophisticated soul, part modern mellow groove – all wrapped up in arrangements that are very well suited to the moment, and which allow Russell's strong songwriting to unfold naturally through the course of the record – with warmly jazzy elements that reflect her hipper talents in the mainstream soul spectrum. Titles include "Hello People", "I Want Love To Find Me", "Jarreau", "New York Bars", "I'll See You Again", and "Look Down Young Soldier". LP, Vinyl record album
(German pressing. Cover has a promo stamp.)
