One of the most jazz-based recordings ever done by Jack Kerouac – a set that features some great improvisations from Zoot Sims and Al Cohn! If you only know Cohn and Sims from their more arranged dates of the 50s, you'll really be surprised at their work here – as both players blow lines behind Kerouac, with an earthy, open tone that really matches the spirit of his readings. Sims and Cohn alternate on the long stretch of "American Haikus" on side one – then step back for getnler piano accompaniment on "Hard Hearted Old Farmer" and "The Last Hotel & Some of Dharma". How many different iterations of the "Four Brothers" were there? We don't know, but as near as we can tell, this grouping might most resemble the "original", with four West coast heavies joining forces for a swinging side. Originally making up the sax section of Woody Herman's Thundering Herd, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Herbie Steward and Serge Chaloff are the brothers, and they're joined by fellow Herman alum Buddy Jones, plus Elliot Lawrence and Don Lamond in the rhythm section on this side for Vik. A classic Prestige LP that compiles earlier sides by the young tenor genius Stan Getz – four tunes from a 1949 session recorded under Stan Getz & His Four Brothers, with tenor work from Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Allen Eager, and Brew Moore – all blowing with Getz in a real "brothers-like" sax section sound. The remaining 4 tracks feature Stan and Al Cohn, working in a 1952 session with George Wallington on piano and Kai Winding on trombone – on some nice light boppish tracks that have that sweet smooth Getz tone firmly in place. A very well-titled album – as it definitely features Zoot Sims and Al Cohn stretching out – pushing their groove a bit more than on some of their tightly-composed mid 50s sessions for RCA! The lineup is still slightly large – an octet that features Zoot and Al on tenor, plus the latter on some baritone sax too – plus Harry Edison on trumpet, Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, Freddie Green on guitar, and Hank Jones on piano – working with a relaxed, easygoing vibe that swings in a gentle style that really opens up the solos. Titles include "Stretching Out", "Now Will You Be Good", "King Porter", and "Bee Kay". All this, and the album has a cover of a very sexy model – stretching out! CD

The rest of the group features Mose Allison on piano, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Nick Stabulas on drums – and the arrangements are all pretty darn fresh, handled by Al and Bob themselves. Half the album features a triple-tenor lineup with Zoot, Al Cohn, and Richie Kamuca – all trading lines in unfettered longer tunes with rhythm by Dave Frishberg, Tommy Potter, and Mel Lewis. The remaining tracks feature Zoot and Bob Brookmeyer in the frontline – working with Roger Kellaway, Bill Crow, and Dave Bailey on rhythm. All tracks are long, and the album's recorded with very strong sound – making the whole thing sparkle like some of Zoot's rare few live sets on bigger labels at the time. Zoot Sims returns to the Half Note Cafe for this great live session – the site of an earlier date for United Artists in the late 50s, re-explored here with a whole new sense of energy! As with the earlier UA session, Zoot's playing here in the company of tenorist Al Cohn – both of them stretching out nicely on the album's longer tracks – matching lines on the heads, then stating solos on tenor voices that were diverging a bit more in the mid 60s than they were on more famous recordings from years past. Arrangements are by Al Cohn and Manny Albam – and the players also include Marky Markowitz on trumpet and Jim Hall on guitar – who brings in some nice Brazilian flavors on his instrument. Tenors can't get any more conclaved than this – as the record brings together 4 players on the instrument in a great match from 2 of the best sides of 50s jazz! John Coltrane and Hank Mobley represent the more open, soulful side of the spectrum – and Al Cohn and Zoot Sims the tighter, more smartly arranged aspect. Together, the quartet of horns work in an open-ended blowing mode with rhythm by Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Art Taylor – in a way that almost makes the set a "Coltrane plus" album for Prestige – one that has the structure of some of the best Trane/Garland sides for the label, but which blows in some other horns with different voicings. If you ever needed a record to demonstrate the subtler shadings of genius within 50s modern jazz, yet still convince you that it could also be relaxed and spontaneous, this record may well be the one. A 2LP set that compiles early recordings made by Getz for Prestige – about half of them titles that were issued on early singles, combined with material from the album Stan Getz With Cal Tjader. The early singles feature a few tunes with the "brothers" style sound – Brew Moore, Allen Eager, Zoot Sims, and Al Cohn on tenor with Stan – plus some other quartet sides. The Cal Tjader album is killer record from the late 50s – and one that hints at all the sides Stan would take in later years: his bossa sides, his vibes quartet with Gary Burton, and the playful lyricism of his recordings with Chick Corea. The set was recorded in San Francisco, when Stan had that great bassist Scott LaFaro in his group, and when he was brought into the studio by Fantasy to meet with local talents like Cal Tjader, Eddie Duran, and Vince Guaraldi. Billy Higgins is also added on drums, giving the set a lively songlike sound that's just great. The group works incredibly well together, and it's a shame they only really gelled for this rare non-Verve session. The mood here's a bit in the swinging bachelor pad mode – but never too much so to step far from jazz, thanks to a strong batch of soloists in the group – including Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Bob Brookmeyer, and Urbie Green. The titles are mostly standards – but done with lots of playful percussive touches that open them up nicely – almost into an RCA Living Stereo mode, but without as much kitsch. A great little 2LP set – and a near-definitive release of recordings made by Gerry Mulligan and Lee Konitz, along with players like Zoot Sims, Allan Eager, and Al Cohn during the early 50s in LA. Some of the sides are studio sets, others are recorded live, and all seem to have a freeness that's rare for both of the players at the time. The sets are a bit loose, but in a good way, one that has the normally controlled Mulligan and Konitz opening up more in a jam session mode, especially on the longer tracks. One of Jimmy Rushing's last truly great albums – a jazz-tinged session of bluesy material, one that gets at his best work of the 50s! The arrangements are by Al Cohn, and have a fluid swing that pushes Jimmy past cliche – working with players that include Zoot Sims, Budd Johnson, Freddie Green, and Gene Quill in a style that's got all the leaner touches of the Basie band at the same time. A wonderful late album from Coleman Hawkins – recorded in 1956 with the orchestra of Billy Byers, including soloists Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, and Hank Jones. Coleman's the main blower, though – and the arrangements have a solid base that lets him open up in that exploratory tone he was crafting during the time. And although tracks are short, there's a heck of a lot of soul packed into them – recorded with impeccable quality, much more so than earlier sides. Titles include "I Never Knew", "Bean & The Boys", "The Essence of You", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "Dinner For One Please, James", and "I'm Shooting High".
