✨✧ VariousEthiopian Hit Parade Vol 1 ... LP
Ahma/Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A seminal album of sounds from the groundbreaking Ethiopian scene at the start of the 70s – a full length collection of previous 45s from the excellent Ahma Records label – home to revolutionary sounds that continue to influence new generations of listeners! The music here represents the Golden Age at its peak – sounds that partly reform older traditions with new modernist ideals, partly shift sideways from western influences, to the sorts of enigmatic, other-worldly styles you'd know from the music of Mulatu and some of his contemporaries! And lest you think that "hit parade" means commercial crass, think again – because these tunes are every bit as mindblowing as the music you'd find on the seminal Ethiopiques series. Titles include "Addis Abeda Bete" by Alemayehu Eshete, "Tezeta" by Seifu Yohannes, "Yeberehe Lomie" by Abayneh Degene, "Gara Ser Naw Betesh" by Teshome Meteku, "Asha Dedawo" by Menelik Wossenachew, "Ayamaru Eshete" by Essatu Tessema, and "Hedech Alu" by Muluken Melesse. Bilal AbdurahmanEchoes Of Timbuktu & Beyond In Congo Square ... CD
Folkways, 1979. New Copy Gatefold ... $8.99 16.98
A beautifully poetic take on the transplantation of African sounds in the US scene – played on a variety of different instruments by Bilal Abdurahman! The tracks are mostly short, percussive ones – with the strongest focus on instrumentation, but with occasional vocal refrains from Bilal – usually in wordless or chanted form, although there's a few nice spoken bits too! Instrumentation is quite diverse – and includes balafon, xalam, and even Ugandan harp – on titles that include "Spirits Of Congo Square", "Ancestral Ode", "Fusion", "Congo Square Procession", "Lament", "Blues Is Born", and "Gogi Solo". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Epic/Argo/Definitive (Spain), 1955/1956. Used 2 CDs ... $19.99
One of the most comprehensive collections we've ever seen of the early trio work of Ahmad Jamal – an overstuffed 2CD set that brings together early material recorded for Epic, plus 2 trio albums for Argo! The package features a whopping 41 tracks in all – including all of Jamal's key drum-less trio sides that featured guitarist Ray Crawford and bassist Israel Crosby, plus a few more that feature Eddie Calhoun in place of Crosby, and an additional 11 "bonus tracks" that offer a group with drummer Walter Perkins! Material originally appeared on the albums Chamber Music Of The New Jazz, Ahmad Jamal, Ahmad Jamal Trio, and Count Em 88 – and titles include "Black Beauty", "Spring Is Here", "New Rhumba", "Foggy Day", "Pavanne", "Old Devil Moon", "Maryam", "Perfida", "Rica Pulpa", "Crazy He Calls Me", "Jeff", "Autumn Leaves", "Beat Out One", and "Jim Loves Sue". ✨✧ Ahmad JamalAwakening ... CD
Impulse/MCA, 1970. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A mindblowing album from Ahmad Jamal – a fantastic start to the 70s, and a set of music that shows just how far the pianist had come in just a few short years! The album's all acoustic, but has some of that spacious flow that Jamal would bring to his work on Fender Rhodes – with an approach that's even more open in terms of song structure than his earlier trio material – as if Jamal's choosing to omit more notes than he's including – but all with a quality that still keeps the music very full and rhythmic – pulsating with a special sort of energy that's neither Bill Evans, nor McCoy Tyner – but instead this really amazing sound that's all Ahmad's own. The trio features equally wonderful work from Jamil Nasser on bass and Frank Gant on drums – and titles include "The Awakening", "I Love Music", "Patterns", "Wave", and "Dolphin Dance". CD

✨✧ Ahmad JamalChamber Music Of The New Jazz ... CD
Argo (Russia), 1955. Used ... $6.99
Beautiful work from Jamal's early Chicago years – and a perfectly titled set that really gets at the differences he made in modern jazz! The tunes are wonderfully fluid, soulful, and swinging – but not in the gutbuckety style of other trios of the time, more in a lightly modern style that features almost equal interplay between Jamal's piano, the bass of Israel Crosby, and the guitar of the wonderful Ray Crawford – who really ads an amazing touch to the record. Tracks include the great original "New Rhumba", plus cool versions of "Jeff", "Darn That Dream", "Spring Is Here", and "All Of You". CD

✨✧ Ahmad JamalComplete Live At The Spotlite Club 1958 (Ahmad Jamal IV/Portfolio Of Ahmad Jamal plus singles) ... CD
Argo/Gambit (Spain), 1958. Used 2 CDs ... $18.99
A great double-length set from Amad Jamal – material originally issued on his 4th trio album for Argo, plus the even longer Portrait Of Ahmad Jamal – one of the first 2LP sets ever issued by the label! The double CDs set features tracks all recorded at the Spotlite Club in Washington, DC on September 5 and 6, 1958 – live material, but captured with crystal-clear sound, so that the nuances of the Jamal trio come through beautifully! The collection is magical early work from Ahmad Jamal – a scintillating blend of piano, percussion, and bass – with a sound that was incredibly fresh at the time, and which still sounds pretty much so to our ears! The album crackles with imagination and rhythm – really hitting on all burners without burning itself out – and showing that even in these early days, Jamal's approach was one that could be as striking as it was mellow. Bass is by the incredible Israel Crosby, and drums are by Vernell Fournier – and the 2CD set features 25 live tracks that include "Taboo", "The Girl Next Door", "Should I", "Secret Love", "Squatty Roo", "Aki & Ukthay", "Our Delight", "Tater Pie", "Seleritus", "This Can't Be Love", "Ole Devil Moon", "Ivy", and "Let's Fall In Love". Also features 3 bonus tracks from singles – studio recordings of "Taking A Chance On Love", "Secret Love", and "Soft Winds". CD

Argo, 1960. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A sprightly set from the Ahmad Jamal Trio – but also a record that's not as brightly colored as you might guess from the title, thanks to a nice undercurrent of darkness in the mix! Jamal's piano work is often nicely punctuated – perhaps living up to the "happy moods" promised on the cover – but the bass work of Israel Crosby and drums by Vernell Fournier are a lot more subtle – magical element that really makes the record sparkle with that unique Jamal-like approach to rhythm. Titles include "For All We Know", "Excerpt From The Blues", "Little Old Lady", "Pavanne", "Time On My Hands", "Raincheck", and "Rhumba No 2". LP, Vinyl record album

Argo/MCA, 1958. Used ... $4.99
The tune "Poinciana" must have been written by Jamal – as the lyrical flowing style of the song is perfect for his deeply soulful piano style. It wasn't, though – although this recording of the tune has made it one of the biggest in Jamal's book from the time, a perpetual favorite that's a great example of his rich talents. The album also features a great version of "Autumn Leaves" that stretches for over 7 minutes – one of Jamal's first extended tunes on record – plus the cuts "Ivy", "Tater Pie", and "A Gal In Calico". Impulse, 1969. Very Good Gatefold ... $24.99
Wonderful open-ended Ahmad Jamal music from the end of the 60s – and a set that really shows his growth as a player at the time! The "revisited" in the title refers to Jamal's earlier success on Argo records with a recording of "Poinciana" – one that forever made the tune his, thanks to a long-flowing approach that took the familiar standard, and turned it into the perfect foil for Jamal's expressive piano style. But the vibe here is very different – even more open than before, with a beautiful 9 minute reworking of the tune that's worth the price of admission alone! The trio features Jamil Sulieman on bass and Frank Gant on drums – and titles include "Poinciana", "Call Me", "Lament", "How Insensitive", and "Have You Met Miss Jones". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1986. Very Good+ ... $9.99
One of Ahmad Jamal's great mid 80s sets for Atlantic Records – recorded in a spacious acoustic mode that has Jamal crafting beautiful tones on the Steinway, yet never falling into overindulgence! The record's got a surprisingly rhythmic quality – as the drums of Herlin Riley and bass of James Cammack are often augmented by percussion from Manola Badrena – fleshing out tunes with complicated changes that soar alongside Jamal's free-floating lines on the keys. The array of colors here is simply beautiful – deeper and more expressive than Ahmad's sound in earlier years – on titles that include "Without You", "Acorn", "Yellow Fellow", "Autumn Rain", and "Winter Snow". 20th Century, 1974. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer from Ahmad Jamal – a Fender Rhodes record that stands as a nice contrast to his equally great work of the 60s! Jamal was already a master of the subtle, soulful touch – and on Fender Rhodes, that quality comes out even more strongly – given some light support from arranger Richard Evans, who brings in some cool elements that are very much in the late 60s Cadet Records vein! Ahmad's tone is very rich and full, with a great soul sound – and the album features some great jazz funk covers – like a version of the classic break track "Misdemeanor", plus "Trouble Man", "Ghetto Child", and "Don't Misunderstand". A great little set from Ahmad – laidback, mellow, with a slowly spiralling groove that's slyly funky at times. Ahmad's playing acoustic piano and clavinet on the record – and arrangements are by Bones Howe, Richard Evans, Ahmad, and Mike Melvoin. A few tracks feature a larger group with more electric horns or strings – and about half the album's played by a sextet that includes Calvin Keys on guitar. Tracks include "Jet", "Festival", "Dynamo", "Sumayah", and a nice version of "Black Cow"! LP, Vinyl record album

In addition to traditional drums, Altschul handles quica, bowed cymbals, waterphone, shakers, bells, cymbals, wood block, and lots more on the record – also getting some percussive performances from his mates in the trio – trombonist Ray Anderson and bassist Mark Helias! Anderson's trombone really provides some great glue to hold the performance together – some bold, soulful lines that easily move between free passages and more swinging moments. Tremendous work by a jazz group we've not seen on any other records – working here in a set of live improvisations recorded in Austria in 1978! Shirley HornMay The Music Never End ... CD
Verve, 2003. Used ... $6.99
Stunning – and some of the best work we've ever heard from Shirley Horn! We know, we know – you've seen a bit too much of her in the jazz racks of late – but don't let that stop you from picking up this album, because it's amazing! Shirley returns to the spare, subtle simplicity of older albums like Travelin Light and Where Are You Going – working in a trio format that's so stripped down, so mellow, most of the work on the set is really just done by Shirley's vocals. And as when Shirley's singing at her best, the album is filled with tunes that you might have heard before – but which take on a whole new life and imagination in Shirley's hands. For some reason, she seems to find words in these songs we've never heard before – putting them over with new meanings, new emotions, and a sound that's incredibly sublime! Ahmad Jamal and Roy Hargrove make some slight guest appearances on the set, but forget about them – because the real magic is Shirley, sounding greater here than ever! Titles include "Forget Me", "Maybe September", "Everything Must Change", "May The Music Never End", "Take Love Easy", and "Watch What Happens". CD

IlaiyaraajaIlectro – Euphoric Electronics & Robotic Funk (UK pressing) ... CD
Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
Great electronics from the Indian scene of the 80s – music that's a lot warmer and more evocative than you might guess from the "robotic" in the title – thanks to plenty of roots in the Kollywood soundtrack scene! The instrumentation is often spare, but still echoes the fuller scope of Bollywood brilliance – and at some level, Ilaiyaraaja's music here represents an 80s take on earlier Bollywood funk – sometimes a bit quirkier, due to the instrumentation – but hardly ever cold or stark at all, and very different from the kind of electronics that were brimming big on the European scene. Part of this quality really comes from the vocals – sung by singers who include KS Chitra, Malaysia Vasudevan, SP Balasubrahmanyam, Vani Jayaram, and others – often in styles that have the playful back/forth approach of Indian film lyrics. The set's a treasure through and through – with 17 mesmerizing tracks that include "Kadal Mele", "Mancha Podi", "Adi Rani", "Poo Poo Kkum", "Ilasa Sirusa", "Eswarane", "Needhi Idhu", and "Poongatre". MadlibShades Of Blue – Madlib Invades Blue Note (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 2003. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $35.99 37.99
Madlib invades Blue Note! He gets free reign of the catalog for this mix of sampler genius and live band interpretations, too, as/with Ahmad Miller, Yesterdays New Quintet, Malcolm Catto, Medaphoar, and others from the Stones Throw camp. This one's truly a conceptual triumph, if there ever was such a thing – one of the greatest hip hop producers alive, given carte blanche with the source beats of the century! Madlib's Blue Note crates are heavily weighed in the mid 60s through mid 70s electric beats that often get the shaft in mainstream jazz round-ups, but floor the beathead world into overdrive. Re-interpretations, remixes, and revisions are spliced seamlessly with the source samples, creating a whole new world where hip hop and late model live funk not only co-exists with classic Blue Note jazz, but it actually draws a linear transition between the 2 genius art forms. Beautiful stuff – if the album isn't the most original idea to come along all of these years into the hip hop & jazz underground, it's certainly one of the most perfectly realized projects of its kind, ever! It's one for the time capsule – easily one of Madlib's masterpieces, and pure funky sample wizardry by any standard! Includes Monk Higgins' "Slim's Return" interpreted by Ahmad Miller and DJ Lord Such on cuts, "Donald Byrd's "Distant Land", "Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Bounce", Yesterday's New Quintet's adaptation of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints", Madlib Invazion's "Funky Blue Note", the Joe McDuphrey Experience take on Horace Silver's/Herbie Hancock's "Peace/Dolphin Dance" and lots more. Spiegelei/Sonorama (Germany), 1976. New Copy ... $9.99 19.99
The second album from Mombasa – and possibly even better than the first! The group have really come into their own by the time of this date – mixing together jazz and African roots with a sound that's unlike anyone else we can think of – quite unique in its approach to rhythms, sounds, and solos! The grooves aren't really the Afro Funk you might expect – and instead, they're based on a headier brew of basslines and percussion, one that's somewhere in a space between Boscoe, The Pharoahs, and Demon Fuzz – but with a sound that's ultimately different than both. The trombone of Lou Blackburn carries the lead on most tracks – snaking out wonderfully over the grooves, with a quality that's amazingly soulful, and which almost has him standing head to head with Fred Wesley as a 70s innovator on his instrument. Other members of the group include Doug Lucas on trumpet, Bob Reed on percussion, Alan Tatham on drums, and Don Ridgeway on electric bass – the last of whom really does a great job shaping the sound of the tunes. Titles include "Yenyeri", "Holz II", "Nomoli", "African Hustle", and "Al Rahman". CD

Warmly hypnotic work from this great Moroccan group – a set of long tracks that mix together percussion, acoustic strings, and chanted vocals – all swirling together with a vibe that's as spiritual as it is timeless! The set was recorded in the 70s, but the only aspect of that decade you'll hear might be the quality of the recording – as the instrumentation and vocals are crystal clear throughout, and come across with a power that almost brings a trance-like quality to the entire album! The sound here is a great combination of the late 60s tone that Sonny forged on other east coast indies – and some of the hipper, more open rhythms he'd later hit on the Jazz Masters label in Detroit on his work with Eddie Russ – a sound that's quite unique, and which is a fair bit different than the funk-based Stitt dates for Prestige around the same time. Players here are quite unusual too – Herbie Hancock on piano, organ, and Fender Rhodes – plus Ted Sommer on vibes, and guitar by either Gene Bertoncini, Howard Collins, or John Pizzarelli – depending on the track. Rhythm is by Ron Carter on bass and Grady Tate on drums – and the arrangements by Dave Ward have a nicely fresh approach to soul jazz – one that really keeps things interesting throughout! Titles include "Sunny", "My Idea", "Jason's Blues", "Out Of This World", "Opus 1", "When Sonny Blows Blue", and "Mac Arthur Park". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousHassaniya Music From The Western Sahara & Mauritania ... LP
Sublime Frequencies, 2006. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
Amazing sounds from the west Sahara – music recorded on the initial exploratory trip that forged the famous relationship between the Sublime Frequencies label and Group Doueh – served up here in a batch of work that also includes many of that group's contemporaries too! The music here is as mindblowing as that on any of the full albums from Group Doueh – a really unique modern hybrid of Saharan roots and contemporary guitar – electric and acoustic elements dancing together beautifully, in some very striking styles. Most tracks include vocals, and titles include "Wanyey Allah Idumo" by Group Marwani, "Hanun" by Sadoum Grouop, "Kar Akhal" by Sadoum Ouled Aida, "Beyt Kar Labyad" by Group Doueh, "Beyt Kar Akhal" by Abdul Rahman Al-Gheid, and "Bismi Lahi Lahi Namdah" by Group Marwani. VariousImpulse Records – Music, Message, & The Moment ... CD
Impulse, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 29.98
A stunning collection of work from the legendary Impulse Records catalog – a double-length set that focuses on the most spiritual side of the label! Red, green, and black are often used together as the colors of righteousness – but the orange and black of Impulse has stood strong as the standard for hip, forward-thinking jazz for decades – especially given the label's legacy of late 60s/early 70s material that's featured here strongly! A different title for the set might be "John Coltrane & His Children" – as the set begins with a key work from Trane, then moves into all these other tracks that showcase the opening spiritual side of jazz as the 60s moved on. Titles include "Sister Mamie" by Yusef Lateef, "Just Us Blues" by Elvin Jones/Jimmy Garrison Sextet, "Garvey's Ghost" by Max Roach, "The Creator Has A Master Plan (edit)" by Pharoah Sanders, "The Rights Of All" by Oliver Nelson, "Freedom Dance" by Shirley Scott, "We Shall Overcome" by Charlie Haden, "Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe" by Albert Ayler, "Lament" by Michael White, "Imani" by Dewey Redman, "Awakening" by Ahmad Jamal, "Blues For Brother George Jackson" by Archie Shepp, "Bismillahi Rrahmani Rrahim" by Marion Brown, "Blue Nile" by Alice Coltrane", and the cuts "Africa", "Alabama", "Reverend King", and "Up Gainst The Wall" by John Coltrane himself. A set that goes much farther back than the others in this series, and which has a much wider range of music, too – not just drumbreaks and basslines, but a mix of many different elements that have been sampled in recent years! Given that the package includes cuts samples by artists who include Chance The Rapper, Jay Z, Wu Tang Clan, Amy Winehouse, Prodigy, and Damian Marley, you can bet there's a good sense of variety going on – and the 2LP set features 28 tracks in all – with titles that include "Black & Tan Fantasy" by Thelonious Monk, "Walk On By" by Cal Tjader, "Angel Eyes" by Ahmad Jamal, "Rags & Old Iron" by Nina Simone, "Russian Lullaby" by Ella Fitzgerald, "Sign Of The Times" by Bob James, "Yesterdays" by Clifford Brown & Max Roach, "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby" by Dinah Washington, "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" by Gil Scott Heron, "All Through The Night" by Ella Fitzgerald, "Exodus" by Ferrante & Teicher, "Soul Bossa Nova" by Quincy Jones, "I'm Shakin" by Little Willie John, "Lonely Bull" by Herb Alpert, "God Bless The Child" by Billie Holiday, and "Time Out For Tears" by Chris Connor. Joe Claussell really brings a sense of majesty to this cut from Nicola Conte and Gianluca Petrella – more so than the original, with these righteous vocals from Raashan Ahmad, who begins the cut by speaking – all with a groove that has that warm mix of keyboards and acoustic percussion we always love in Joe Claussell's music! The set features the "Cosmic Arts version" and a "Cosmic Arts dub" – and works like an extended suite, based on the track! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Miles DavisWorkin' With The Miles Davis Quintet ... LP
Prestige, 1956. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A record that hardly seems like workin at all, given the ease with which the group lays down the music – especially trumpeter Miles Davis, whose work here is like magic – and tenorist John Coltrane, who was really coming into his own with this recording! The set's one of a handful from this famous pair, and features superb rhythm accompaniment from Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – a standard-setting group who know how to come in when needed, then lay back and let Miles and Trane run in their own directions The album's got well-deserved classic status in modern jazz – and titles include two takes on the group's famous "The Theme", plus "It Never Entered My Mind", "Four", "In Your Own Sweet Way", "Trane's Blues", "Ahmad's Blues", and "Half Nelson". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono blue trident label pressing with RVG stamp. Vinyl has a press flaw bump on "Ahmad's Blues". Cover has a cutout hole, tiny seam splits, and light aging in back.)

Riverside, 1958. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Everybody Digs Bill Evans – or at least it certainly seems that way from the cover endorsements by Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, and Ahmad Jamal – but the real proof is in the record, and the set is a great one from Bill's classic years on Riverside! Evans is at the peak of his early powers here – working with a straightforward rhythm combo that features Sam Jones on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums – but still hitting those beautifully fluid, beautifully spacious lines that set his playing apart from most who'd come before him. Tracks include 3 solo numbers – "Lucky To Be Me", "Peace Piece", and the very short "Epilogue" – plus trio tracks "Night & Day", "Minority", "Tenderly", and "Oleo". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono standard size blue label Bill Grauer Productions Inc pressing, RLP 12-291, with microphone logo and deep groove. Cover has some ring and edge wear, lightly bent corner at the top right, and a 2.5 inch piece of masking tape at the top of the spine.)

✨✧ Ill ConsideredLiminal Space ... CD
Marathon, 2021. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There's nothing liminal about this record at all – as Ill Considered maybe state their presence even more than before – coming on strong with that fantastic mix of rhythmic improvisation that's been their calling card right from the start – fleshed out here by work from a few key contributors, and delivered at a level that makes the record a rock-solid effort all the way through! The group has shifted slightly, and the core lineup features the great Idris Rahman on saxes, Lirian Donin on bass, and Emre Ramazanoglu on drums – getting help here from Sarathy Korwar on percussion, Ahnase on saxes, Theon Cross on tuba, and a host of other collaborators as well. If anything, these added musicians only help further distill the message of the group – which is bold and brilliant, on titles that include "Dust", "Dervish", "Loosed", "Pearls", "Light Trailed", "Knuckles", "The Lurch", and "Sandstorm". ✨✧ Harold VickWatch What Happens ... CD
RCA (Spain), 1968. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible record – filled with tunes that are far groovier than you might expect! The session features saxophonist Harold Vick in a split setting – as half the tracks feature a larger group with Vick on tenor and soprano, playing with Herbie Hancock, Joe Farrell, Jimmy Owens, Tom McIntosh, and a chorus of breezy female singers – while the other half feature a quartet that includes some spectacular work by Hancock on piano. The female singers are surprisingly great – drifting behind Vick's horn with a breezy, moody feel that recalls similar use of voices on sessions by George Braith or Ahmad Jamal – and which, if anything, emphasize the soulfulness of Vick's horn – a sound that's extremely apparent in his rich Nathan Davis-like use of the soprano sax! Vick's sound is even more far-reaching and deeply soulful than on his other RCA albums from the time – with a nascent spiritual soul jazz tone even in the most familiar numbers. There's echoes here of Gary Bartz, Jimmy Heath, and the above-mentioned Nathan Davis – and the record is a massively soulful treasure that's one of our favorite jazz sessions ever! Titles include "Ode To Trane", "Serenata", "This Hotel", "Watch What Happens", "Guava Jelly", and "Autumn Sunset". CD

30M (Germany), 2022. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful look at the contemporary scene in Tehran – music that we never would have heard otherwise, were it not for this well-done set! There's definitely a number of tracks that echo some of the older Iranian sounds you might expect, but those are also mixed with some more contemporary moments – and some especially great cuts that bridge the gap between generations by somehow balancing older acoustic elements with a dash of modern electronics and beats! Yet throughout it all, the sound is never gimmicky or overdone – these aren't cheesy remixes of older music, but really heartfelt explorations of music and meaning – served up on titles that include "Rotenburg 2020" by Otagh Band, "Sorna Lorestan" by Ehsan Abdipour, "I May Never See You Again" by Saba Alizadeh, "Pipe Dreams Metempsychosis" by Sote, "Balal Balalom" by Parastoo Ahmadi, "Naked City" by Rojin Sharafi, and "Kolber" by Siavash Molaeian & Kasra Faridi. ✨✧ Cairo Free Jazz EnsembleHeliopolis ... LP
Holidays (Italy), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most striking Egyptian jazz recordings of the 70s – and maybe one of the most avant, too – an unusual recording done at the German Culture Institute in Cairo, and an early collaboration between Hartmut Geerken and Salah Ragab! Ragab plays drums and percussion – but the approach is very different than his more rhythmic Cairo Jazz Band dates – as the group here really live up to the "free jazz" in their name – and come across more like the Sun Ra Arkestra during their greatest moments of free improvisation! Other players include Farouk Abdel Rahman on alto and percussion, Abdel Hakim Zael on baritone sax, Moohi El-Din Osman on bass, and Mahmoud Ayoub on tenor – and Geerken himself plays a wide range of percussive instruments and other items – including a "toy car producing the sound of a siren". Titles include "Liberty For Iratilim", "Turnus", and "Diagnosis For Percussion". LP, Vinyl record album

A record that really dives deep with a rich mix of creative rhythms and inventive horn lines! The album still has Jack DeJohnette staying true to his more avant roots – working with tenor from David Murray, alto and soprano sax from John Purcell, baritone and tuba from Howard Johnson, and bass from Rufus Reid – a lineup that's a bit bigger than on other Special Edition albums, and which is used to fill in even more colors and deeper elements than before. Some of the tunes are wonderfully vivid in approach – and titles include "Festival", "Third World Anthem", "Zoot Suite", "Ahmad The Terrible", and "New Orleans Strut". CD

✨✧ MadlibShades Of Blue – Madlib Invades Blue Note ... CD
Blue Note, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
Life Force Jazz, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A heady brew of sounds from reedman Hafez Modirazdeh – a multi-talented player who handles tenor, alto, and soprano sax here – in a blend of tracks that draw as much inspiration from avant jazz as they do the intellectual currents that Hafez refers to in the notes! Many numbers are quite spare, and have more of the spacious improvisational quality of underground east coast recordings from the past 20 years, especially those from the New England scene – and Modirzadeh plays with a shirting lineup of musicians that includes James Norton on bass clarinet, Bobby Bradford on cornet, and Akira Tana on drums. There's also some vocalizations on the record – courtesy of Linda Tillery, Rita Sahai, and Ricardo De La Juana – all of whom bring a very different flavor to the proceedings – on titles that include "NRW 2", "Martinete", "Der Widder", "In Complicity", "Shades Of Suleyman", "Holly/Haleh", and "Blues For Ahmad". One of the earliest albums ever from Harold Budd – an artist who'd later rise to great ambient fame in the following decade, but who's maybe at his most sophisticated here! The set has all the hallmark of the new musical experiments that Brian Eno was showcasing on his Obscure Music label – where the set first appeared – and Budd plays electric piano with a very cool set of contemporary musicians – a lineup that includes alto sax from Marion Brown, harp from Maggie Thomas, marimba from Michael Nyman and John White, and glockenspiel from Gavin Bryars. Brian Eno produced the record, and vocalizes slightly – and tracks have a long-spun, almost spiritual vibe – on titles that include "Bismallahi Rrahmani Rrahmani", "Two Songs (Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord/Butterfly Sunday)", "Madrigals Of The Rose Angel", and "Juno". A contemporary record, but one we'd rank right up there with the moodiest, most exotic African funk albums of the 70s – especially the gems we've discovered through the Ethiopiques series! These guys play in a style that certainly references Ethiopian reeds and keyboard work of the 70s, but with a groove that's even funkier too – an understanding of the possibilities of a deep funk combo, but expressed through a much richer, more organic vibe – so that nothing's ever forced or faked at all, and the music is wonderfully captivating throughout.
