Da LataFabiola ... CD
Agogo (Germany), 2013. Used ... $6.99
Easily some of the most global work we've ever heard from Da Lata – a set that goes far beyond the mix of London and Rio that first made the group so great – into a realm that encompasses a wide range of sounds from around the world! The music's still got that great organic groove – a hip update of older modes, served up with lean instrumentation, but lots of live jazzy touches – and this time around, the music moves with elements from South American, African, and even American scenes – with guests who include Rich Medina, Mayra Andrade, Diabel Cissokho, Miguel Atwood Ferguson, and others. As usual, it's the warm instrumentation of Chris Franck that really holds the whole thing together – some especially great keyboard lines that weave in between guitars, percussion, and other great elements to forge grooves that may well be the most compelling so far from this always-great group. Titles include "Um Amor A Mais, "Deixa", "Ronca Da Cuica", "Dn't Give It Up", "The Shore", "Cambara", and "Places We Go". CD

Mulatu Astatke & Black Jesus ExperienceTo Know Without Knowing ... CD
Agogo (Germany), 2020. New Copy ... $15.99
A great entry in the ongoing resurgence of the mighty Mulatu Astatke – the legend of Ethiopian music from the 70s, still going strong after all these years – and finding new ways to interact with generations of musicians that he inspired with his original recordings! This set has Mulatu working with the Black Jesus Experience – a group with a slightly lame name, but who really keep up the older spirit of some of Mulatu's music – while Astatke plays vibes and a bit of Wurlitzer electric piano, and the rest of the lineup add in some strong Ethio horn touches, slightly funky rhythms, and occasional vocals from a few different singers, including an MC on one track. Bob Sedergreen plays bold piano lines on one number, and titles include "Mulatu", "To Know Without Knowing", "Ambassa Lemdi", "Living On Stolen Land", "Mascaram Setaba", and "Kulun Mankwaleshi". CD
Also available To Know Without Knowing (with bonus download) ... LP 22.99

WanubalePhosphenes ... LP
Agogo (Germany), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
A funk band with horns, but one with a very different feel than the rest – as these guys have arrangements that are nicely complicated up top – in a way that has the horns moving in all these really wonderful, colorful sort of ways! Instead of the usual inspirations from 60s soul or 70s Afro Funk, these guys use their horns in ways that might be more linked to jazz – never in a way that's too heady, but which has a great sense of tone and interplay – as the mix of trumpet, tenor, baritone, and trombone really do great things over the lively rhythms, guitar, and keyboards from the rest of the group! There's a very fresh feel to the record throughout – no vocals, and styles we've never heard before, yet groovy enough to fit right in on the Agogo label – with titles that include "Hickups", "Fake Five", "Ticking Boxes", "Strange Heat", "Noto", "U9 By Bike", and "Choose Your Truth". Grupo BatuqueOle Ola – Futebol Bonito! – The Brazilian Soundtrack To The Beautiful Game ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2006. New Copy ... $5.99
A Brazilian tribute to football – but one that's given a distinctly London twist – as core rhythms by Wilson Das Neves, Dom Um Romao, and others are mixed up and augmented by Da Lata, Zero dB, Roc Hunter, Fauna Flash, and Osunlade! The album's got a depth and compelling quality that goes far beyond other records by Grupo Batuque – as tightly-played percussion riffs are mixed with sound effects, crowd noise, and commentary from football games – all in a rich sonic tapestry that goes past simple samba or batucada! The whole thing's almost like an audio document to the greatness of the sport and its importance in Brazilian culture – but thanks to the globe-spanning efforts of Far Out, the added production help should help settle more than a few disputes at the World Cup! Titles include "Torcida Do Flamengo", "E Ruim (Zero dB rmx)", "Ole Ola", "Isto E Samb", "Na Cancao Do Samba", "Ole Ola (Fauna Flash rmx)", "Na Batida Do Agogo (Osunlade rmx)", and "Berimbal Capoeira (Da Lata rmx)".
