AfrodisiaMalik (difusion edit)/A Fool No Longer ... 7-inch
Cordial (UK), Late 70s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
"Malik" is a great little track – one that seems a bit laidback at first, but which soon takes off with instrumental interplay that's complex, but still very groovy – bass, horns, and keyboards all dancing together with lots of sharp jazzy changes – only breaking a bit when the vocals come into play! "A Fool No Longer" is a bit more straightforward, and equally nice – a strong romping rhythm with a chunky groove that's really great! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ AfrodisiaElephant Sunrise ... CD
Comma/Cordial (UK), 1980. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare work from a funky group who really lead with their basslines and love their rhythms – so much so that vocals are often an afterthought when it comes to the grooves! These guys are German, but they've got a righteous sound that really lives up to the flavor of the cover – and we're guessing that the combo is one of those unique hybrids of American and European players on the overall scene – working with wickedly tight sounds on the bass and drums, dosed throughout with jazzy keyboard solos, tenor sax riffs, and lots of funky guitar. Titles include "Good Thang", "Wild Turkey", "TMFF", "Elephant Sunrise", "Psychic Summers", "Could It Only Be Me", and "Going Down To The Disco". CD

✨✧ Tunde MabaduViva Disco ... LP
Afrodisia/Mr Bongo (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Long live disco, but not the sort that was big on the American scene of the 70s – as Tunde Mabadu serves up a nicely lean version of the music here – filled with Nigerian funk elements, and plenty of his own great work on tenor and alto sax! The tunes are jumpy, jaunty, and plenty darn catchy – maybe more Afro Funk overall, but speeded up a bit from a few years before - with Tunde at the head of a group that features lots of percussion at the bottom, plenty of riffing guitar and bass, sweet keyboard lines, and two trumpets to punctuate his own work in the lead! Tunde sings a bit, too – which response from two lovely female singers – and titles include "Disco Press Funk", "Angelina Sugar Daddy", "African Parowo", "Amupara Ko Ma Dara", and "Alabosi". Kenny DorhamAfro-Cuban ... LP
Blue Note, 1955. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A completely unique little session – and a record that's every bit as musically striking as you might guess from its title and cover! The date's a rare Latin-tinged one for trumpeter Kenny Dorham – a record that takes his usually smooth sound and sets it up against octet backings with horns from JJ Johnson on trombone, Cecil Payne on baritone sax, and Hank Mobley on tenor – plus piano from Horace Silver, bass from Oscar Pettiford, and drums from Art Blakey – plus added congas from Patato Valdes! The expanded group plays with a great sense of power – really pushing Kenny's sound tremendously – and although the album also features a few tracks by a smaller group with less percussion, these also have a bit of a Latin/exotic tinge too. Titles include "Basheer's Dream", "Lotus Flower", "KD's Motion", "Venita's Dance", "Minor's Holiday", "La Villa", and "Afrodisia". LP, Vinyl record album
Also available Afro-Cuban (with bonus tracks) ... CD 3.99

✨✧ VariousCan You Feel It – Modern Soul, Disco, & Boogie 1976 to 1986 ... LP
Tramp (Germany), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The cover's a bit creepy, but the set's a great one – way more soulful than the image of a dummy might make you expect! The collection follows strongly in the same territory as the funk titles on the Tramp Records label – and like those, digs deep in the American underground to find a host of under-exposed gems from back in the day – tunes that start out in the fast funk years of disco, but also move into some great 80s grooves as well! There's a huge number of cuts here we've never heard before – but that's no surprise, given the way that Tramp puts a set like this together – and titles include "The Freeze" by Steven Toll, "SOS" by Tyree Glenn Jr, "Missing You" by Silky Vincent Group, "Sights & Sounds" by Jeffords Brothers, "Medicine Man" by Grayson Street, "Puss (part 1)" by Oakland Express, "A Fool No Longer" by Afrodisia, "Don't It Make You Feel Good" by Deep South Dance Band, "Touchdown Cleveland Browns" by Ray Jay Band, "Future" by Keither Florence & The Associates, "Anytime" by Empulse, "Beautiful Day" by Mel O Madnezz, and "Dig This Piece" by Progressive Sounds Band. LP, Vinyl record album

Main IngredientAfrodisiac ... CD
RCA/Koch, 1973. Used ... $8.99
Essential reissue of one of the best of the early Main Ingredient albums, and probably the one we sell for the most on vinyl when it shows up – which is almost never! The record's got a bunch of smooth sexy Stevie Wonder compositions – like "Superwoman", "Where Were You When I Needed You", "Something Lovely", "Girl Blue", and "I Am Yours" – and Stevie himself plays a bit on the record. The real highlight, though, is the great breakbeat track "You Can Call Me Rover", which has a very tight drum sound at the beginning, and tight soul harmonies all the way through. Very nice stuff, and with a sexy cover to boot! CD

✨✧ Fela & Africa 70Open & Close/Afrodisiac ... CD
Wrasse, 1971/1972/1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 early 70s Fela classics on one CD! Open & Close hails from 1971 – and it features 3 long songs, all with an incredibly tight groove. Fela, Tony Allen, and the Africa 70 group forge the sound that would dominate their style for the next 2 decades – mixing bass, percussion, keyboards, sax, and guitar into a heavy heavy brew on the tracks "Swegbe & Pako", "Open & Close", and "Gbagada Gbagada Gbogodo Gbogodo". Afrodisiac is an excellent companion album – issued a few years later, but including tracks that Fela and the group recorded at Abbey Road in 1971, and which were issued first as singles in Nigeria, forming some of Fela's first big hits! Titles include "Alu Jon Jonki Jon", "Jeu Ko Ku", and "Eko Ile". CD

✨✧ VariousDanque!! – A Compilation Of West African Funk ... CD
BRG/Afrodisiac, 1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Massive African funky tunes from the 70s – and a stunning follow-up to the Booniay compilation of a few years ago! Like that one, this set's compiled from obscure African albums of the 70s, and features a wealth of lesser-known artists who drew inspiration from Fela, Mulatu, and some of the other African funk acts who were grabbing grooves from the US, and restyling them from the 70s scene on the continent. The approach here has some West African touches in the guitar and rhythms – making for some really cool tunes that spin and spiral out with really compelling electrified styles! Titles include "I'm Coming" by Mustapha, "La Popo" by Guerilla, "Kankyema" by Visa A Vis, "Just A Moment" by George Danquah, "Natural Points" by Smahila & The SBS, and "Civilization In The World" by Brigth Engelberts Discogram Productions. CD
