Christy EssienGive Me A Chance (with bonus download) ... LP
Afrodesia (Nigeria), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Christy Essien is a singer with a very unusual voice, especially for the Nigerian scene – kind of this flowing, rich approach that seems to work equally well with ballads and groovers! There's plenty of the latter here – tunes that get great backing from Blo, who you probably know from their own material of the time – and who kick up some of the best tracks with a style so funky, the get plenty of instrumental space on the songs next to Christy's vocals! A few of the mellower cuts almost echo reggae at times, but with a particular twist – and titles include "Saboteurs", "Ikan Idomo", "Don't Let Me Down", "Rumours", "Ife", and "Nobody Can Stop You". LP, Vinyl record album

Shelly ManneShelly Manne & His Men Vol 1 – The West Coast Sound ... LP
Contemporary, Early 50s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A pretty darn great record – the first full length LP cut by Shelly, issued by Contemporary in the mid 50s, and pulling together side from sessions in 1953, some of which were issued previously, others of which appear for the first time here. The tracks are short and playful – very much in the "west coast sound" noted in the title, with Shelly playing the kit in a creative and lyrical way, joined by horn work by players that include Joe Maini, Bill Holman, Jimmy Giuffre, Bob Enevoldsen, Art Pepper, and Bob Cooper. Titles include "Gazelle", "Sweets", "Mallets", "Fugue", "Grasshopper", and "Afrodesia". LP, Vinyl record album
(OJC pressing, still in the shrink with hype sticker.)

Groove Merchant, 1975. Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Excellent work by Lonnie Smith – a free-flowing album of long jazzy grooves that's kind of an extension of his Blue Note albums, touches with more of the electricity of his 70s playing! There's some killer rhythms on the album – courtesy of drummers Jamey Hudad and Ben Riley, and electric bassists Ron Carter and Ralphe Armstrong – and Lonnie's on organ grooving alongside a young Joe Lovano, who plays some killer tenor and soprano sax. Includes the 15 minute jammer "Spirits Free", plus "Afrodesia", "Favors", "Straight To The Point", and "The Awakening". LP, Vinyl record album
