✨✧ Love Childs Afro Cuban Blues BandOut Among 'Em ... LP
Roulette, 1975. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A sweet set of 70s Latin Disco – less Afro-Cuban than you might expect, but a great illustration of the way that older Latin modes had filtered down to more mainstream dancefloors at the time! There's definitely still some Latin elements in the mix – but the set's also got Michael Zager arranging and producing, and giving the whole thing more of a disco focus overall – in ways that criss cross nicely throughout the record. Titles include a sweet clubby cover of Joe Cuba's "Bang Bang", a remake of Sly Stone's "Life & Death In G&A", and the titles "Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys", "Once You Get Started", and "Get Dancin". ✨✧ Jerry Gonzalez & The Fort Apache BandRiver Is Deep ... CD
Enja (Germany), 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
The river is deep and the sound is wide – as the set features wonderful work from the Fort Apache Band of trumpeter/percussionist Jerry Gonzalez – recorded at a point when the group was really starting to cook! The music has its roots in Afro-Cuban styles, but stretches out with plenty of jazz as well – thanks to work from a lineup that includes both Steve Turre and Papo Vasquez on trombones, plus Wilfredo Velez on alto sax – all players who have a bold force in the lead, then soar of on great solos of their own! There's plenty of percussion on the group – played by Gonzalez with five other group members – and the set also features Jorge Dalto on piano and Andy Gonzalez on bass. Titles include "Elegua", "Bebop", "Rio Esta Hondo", "Parisian Thoroughfare", and "Guiro Apache". CD

✨✧ Orchestra BaobabBamba ... CD
Sterns (UK), 1980/1981. Used ... $9.99
More killer work from Senegal's legendary Orchestra Baobab! This CD collects music from two of the band's best late-period albums, Mouhamadou Bamba (1980) and Sibou Odia (1981), both cut prior to the band's celebrated Pirate's Choice sessions. All of the group's trademarks are present – the rollicking Afro-Cuban grooves and the gorgeous Mandinkan and Wolof melodies sung with muezzin-like soul by Thione Seck, Rudy Gomis, and Balla Sidibe. Still, it's the utterly sublime lead guitar by the brilliant Barthelemy Attisso that captivates us most. A number of the tracks were later rerecorded for Baobab's comeback album Specialist in All Styles, but there's something about the beautifully murky aura here that's lost on the slicker remade versions. Really, you can't go wrong with anything waxed by Baobad. Ten great tracks including "Boulmamine", "Doomou Baaye", "Bon Bon 1", "Autorail", "Sou Sedhiou", and "Ndiambaane". CD

Yussef DayesBlack Classical Music ... CD
Nonesuch, 2023. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Yussef Dayes works here under a title that was first coined by Rahsaan Roland Kirk to refer to jazz – but Dayes takes the term to a whole new level with this groundbreaking set – really moving past jazz to unlock a whole field of soulful expression – served up an excellent group at the core, and key contributions from very hip guests throughout! Dayes has always been someone who defies expectations, but here he's going past just some sort of unconventionality to really make his own mark in music – letting an instrumental solo take center stage when needed, or working through vocals in another moment – but all with this effortless flow that really comes together over the course of the album! The group features Charlie Stacey on keyboards, Alexander Bourt on percussion, and Venna on tenor – and guests include Shabaka Hutchings, Leon Thomas, Miles James, Theon Cross, Chronixx, and others. Titles include "Early Dayes", "Afro Cubanism", "Black Classical Music", "Rust", "The Light", "Pon Di Plaza", "Marching Band", "Tioga Pass", "Cowrie Charms", "Crystal Palace", and "Presidential". CD

Ray & His CourtRay & His Court ... LP
Sound Triangle/On High, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 34.99 About April 5, 2024 (delayed)
Some of the tightest funky 70s jamming ever – a lost gem from Ray & His Musical Court, a group that perfectly fuses JB/Horny Horns funk with beat-heavy Afro-Cuban groove! Ray and the group are one of the more obscure funky combos of the era, and it's a damn shame, because the group's tight-as-can-be amalgam of JB's style horn riffing and thumping Afro-Cuban percussion is some of the absolute best of its kind. This group seriously smokes any of the current funk bands on the road! On these sessions Ray wrote, produced, played "organ flute" and provided some vocals in a large group that includes three trumpets, bass clarinet, sax, two drummers, congas, electric bass, and a line of mostly Spanish vocalists. Amazing 70s super funk with a very proud Latin edge – and featuring tracks that include "Sunny", "Soul Freedom", "Cookie Crumbs", "De Eso Nada Monada", "Lo Sabia", "Venimos Acabando", "La Pena", and "La Senorita Lola". ✨✧ Chico O'FarrillTorrid Zone ... LP
Columbia, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A great obscure session by the legendary Cuban arranger/bandleander Chico O'Farrill! The material is similar to some of the stuff that O'Farrill recorded for Verve in the early 50's – with lots of tight ensemble playing, and jazzy tinges set amdist Afro Cuban arrangements. Lots of the tracks are originals, and all the arrangements are by O'Farrill. Titles include "Tropical Jazz", "Mambotanga", "Hey Lolita", and "Adios Panama". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original 2 eye mono pressing – a nice copy!)
