New Orleans Jazz OrchestraSongs – The Music Of Allen Toussaint ... CD
Storyville (Denmark), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
A really nice take on the music of New Orleans soul legend Allen Toussaint – a record that sets things up in new jazz-based arrangements that open up whole new sides of the songs! You'll know most of the numbers here – especially if you've got any of Toussaint's classic albums or productions in your collection – yet the approach is nicely different, with rich horn shadings that make for a very different vibe – but which still get vocal treatment on most numbers, from singers who include Dee Dee Bridgewater, Philip Manuel, and Gerald French. Adonis Rose handles drums with a nice Nola groove, and also directed the whole thing too – and titles include "Working In The Coal Mine", "Southern Nights", "It's Raining", "Zimple Street", "Ruler Of My Heart", "Java", and "Gert Town". Mikis TheodorakisZ – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Columbia, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $1.99
A wonderful and oft-overlooked soundtrack from the mid 60's, featuring some of Mikis Theodorakis' best work, written at the point when he was one of the greatest composers in Europe, moving way past the cliches that folks had come to expect from the Greek music of soundtracks like Never On A Sunday. This one's a dark masterpiece, filled with some wonderful dramatic scoring, some nice chase bits, and a few other tasty groovers. The best cut is "Cafe Rock", a killer funky number with bells clanging away, in the mode of some odd Pierre Henry groover – and other nice ones include "Batucada", "O Adonis", and "La Course De Manuel". LP, Vinyl record album
(360 Sound Columbia Masterworks pressing. Cover has light wear and aging.)
