✨✧ Seu Jorge & RogeNight Dreamer Direct To Disc Sessions ... LP
Night Dreamer (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the most beautiful work we've heard from Seu Jorge in years – a well-recorded, all-acoustic set that really lives up to the spirit of his initial records – thanks in part to some great help from singer/guitarist Roge! The pair sometimes sing together, sometimes take a solo lead, but always have a warmly collaborative vibe – a spirit that's really timeless, and which has the two artists augmented by just a bit of light piano and percussion – all with a rhythmic pulse that brings out the best in Seu's fantastically raspy style! A gem of a record that leaves us wanting a lot lot more from this pair – with titles that include "Meu Brasil", "Sarava", "Caminhao", "Vem Me Salvar", "A Forca", "Onda Carioca", and "Pra Voce Amigo". Nicola Conte & OthersModern Sound Of Nicola Conte – Versions In Jazz-Dub ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2009. New Copy 2CD ... $21.99 24.99
A long-overdue collection of all the mixes, side-projects, and rare "Nicola Conte version" tracks that have cropped up in the past decade or so – work that's every bit as great as the material Conte includes on his own albums and singles! Nicola Conte's not a remixer – he's a re-imaginer – and when he sets out to serve up his own version of a track, he often starts from scratch – using his own band, his own arrangements, and his own key elements – all of which turn any projects for other artists into grooves that are very Conte-directed – the kind of classic jazz-infused gems that Nicola's been laying down on his own Schema Records label for over a decade! This double-disc set is filled with amazing work that Conte's done for other folks – and it also include a few rare and unreleased tracks under his own name as well – a massive helping of music that's really mindblowing throughout – sure to please any fan of Nicola, as well as anyone who digs the artists included in the package. Nicola Conte tracks include "Castles In The Rain", "Charade", "New Blues", "When I Wish Upon A Star", "Solo", "Black Is The Graceful Veil (acoustic version)", "Groovy Samba", and "All Or Nothing At All", which features vocals by Jose James! Other cuts include Conte mixes and reworks of "Stolen Moments (Midnight Mood rework)" by Mark Murphy, "Yellow Daisies" by Fertile Ground, "So Danco Samba (Nicola Conte rework)" by Til Bronner, "Terra De Ninguem" by Sabrina Malheiros, "Take Off (Campi's Idea version)" by Marco Di Marco, "3 Corners (For Friends & Relatives version)" by Five Corners Quintet, "You Are" by Povo, "Our Love" by Luisito Quintero, "Healing Blue (shape of jazz to come version)" by Sunaga T Experience, "Lotus Sun" by Maki Mannami, "Heaven (west coast vibes rmx)" by Bitter:Sweet, "Quiet Nights (out of the cool version)" by Re:Jazz, "Elevated States" by Thunderball, "Mood Indigo" by Akiko, "Take Five (Nicola Conte rmx)" by Roberto Roena, and "Kerma Elastica (Nicola Conte rmx)" by Bobby Hughes Combination. ✨✧ Tim BuckleyLady Give Me Your Key – The Unissued 1967 Solo Acoustic Sessions ... CD
Future Days, 1967. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A lost treasure for any fan of Tim Buckley – material from two different sessions recorded in 1967, both of which include a few songs that never appeared elsewhere! As the title implies, the recordings here are acoustic – mostly with guitar and Buckley's vocals very much upfront in the mix, at a level that traces an even deeper line back to folk music – but which, throughout, is always graced by that amazing sense of phrasing that made Tim unlike any of his contemporaries! The stripped-down setting is a fantastic one for his vocals – which are possibly even more mindblowing without any sort of studio arrangement or fancy production. Material comes from one rare reel-to-reel tape, only recently discovered – and a rare acetate of another session – and the sound quality for both is great. The package comes with detailed notes on the material, and an in-depth interview with co-lyricism Larry Beckett – and titles include "Sixface", "Contact", "Pleasant Street", "Lady Give Me Your Key", "Once Upon A Time", "Marigold", "Carnival Song", "She's Back Again", and "I Can't Leave You Lovin Me". ✨✧ VariousRemolino De Oro – Coastal Cumbias From Colombia's Discos Fuentes 1961 to 1973 ... LP
Discos Fuentes/Domino Sound, 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Old school cumbia tunes – with plenty of raw rhythms and acoustic instrumentation in the mix! The package is a wicked batch of rare numbers from Colombia's legendary Discos Fuentes – most of which are from the early and mid 60s, recorded at a time when the imprint was really making some great waves in Latin music – coming up with a regional sound that was quite different than the popular New York modes of the time – and than the host of other scenes that tried to copy it! Instead, the tunes here work in these romping rhythms that really get to the heart of the cumbia vibe – often touched with a blend of jazz inflections and folkloric instrumentation, wrapped up beautifully together. Titles include "Lorenza" by Los Gavilanes De La Costa, "Cumbia Costena" by Alejandro Duran, "Ocaso Marino" by Los Satelites, "La Pollera Colora" by Los Corraleros De Majagual, "Remolino De Oro" by Abel Antonio Villa, and "Al Amanecer" by Los Cumbiamberos De Pacheco. Hu VibrationalBeautiful ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 2004. Used ... $6.99
Hu Vibrational brings a pounding instrumental mix of percussion, electronic beats, and African-inspired jazz! The loose group feature multi-instrumentalist Adam Rudolph (who has played with Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Hancock and Don Cherry to name a few) on all types of acoustic drums, shakers, bamboo flutes and well beyond, avant garde drummer Hamid Drake on the trap and more, plus experimental beat makers/left field hip hop figures like Daedelus and Carlos Nino/Ammon Contact. What's really nice about this album is how well it coalesces throughout – the crew really finds a hypnotic groove all the way through, and it's not at all the disconnected mess that lesser figures in the experimental community often come up with! A tight, inventive surprise from the ever reliable Soul Jazz label. Tracks include "Joyous", "We Walk", "Friends And Gardens", "Locomotion", "Feet On A Beautiful Planet", "Walkabout It", "In The Here", "Sunkissed", "Return To Earth" and more. CD

Alain Jean-MarieComplete Biguine Reflections – 1992 to 2013 (4CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1990s/2000s/Early 2010s. New Copy 4CD ... $19.99 29.99
A wonderful package – one that brings together five excellent albums from pianist Alan Jean-Marie – an important player on the French scene, but one who never full gets his due on this side of the Atlantic! The set begins with Jean-Marie's first album of Biguine Reflections – a set of jazz reinterpretations of the style of biguine – that highly rhythmic mode from the French West Indies, which itself received a strong influx of jazz in the post-war years! Alain Jean-Marie has roots in Guadeloupe, but plays with the open flow of some of our favorite French pianists, too – and the album's treasure that we've loved for years – one with rhythmic impulses that are unlike any other jazz trio record we can think of! Alain first played in other biguine groups in his youth, so is very familiar with the style – but really opens it up here with the help of Eric Vinceno on bass and Serge Marne on drums. The set continues with Volumes 2, 3, 4, and 5 of Biguine Reflections – a combination of modern jazz and Caribbean moods, but in ways that are completely sublime – and without any of the cliches you might expect! The core sound is acoustic piano jazz – with Jean-Marie on piano, Eric Viinceno on bass, and Jean-Claude Montredon on drums – and together, the players come across with this really fluid vibe, often taking on the sorts of rhythms you might not always find on a standard trio session, and leaping along with a great sense of joy in their music. All albums are wonderful – and the 4CD set is a hell of a discovery in jazz if you've not heard the music of Alain before. CD

Ill Considered/Stac (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP ... $18.99
Tight instrumental work from the UK scene – a record that's part funky, part fuzzy, and very electric overall – almost a hybrid of jazz fusion and some of the electro modes that first found space on horror soundtracks of the 70s and 80s! The group's got lots of guitar pyrotechnics from Benjamin Bouton – who weaves his lines around the keyboards and bass of Kevin Toublant, and the mix of electric and acoustic drums of Leon Brichard – who always seems to provide a driving rhythm, no matter what the setting – but at a level that never overwhelms the other elements too much. The sound definitely echoes the stark video image on the cover – and titles include "Mouse Rock", "Motor Clap", "Gwarn", "Hot Disco", "Proper Music", "Kraut", and "Randomisation". Jason McGuiness handles the keyboards, but he's also got some great help on the session too – a strong lineup of guests that includes Kamasi Washington on tenor, Phil Ranelin on trombone, and Keyon Harrold on trumpet! Drums are by Te'Amir Sweeney, who's got this crackling touch that brings a tight acoustic core next to the freer flows that McGuiness brings on keyboards – balancing the album out nicely, and grounding some of the cosmic currents of the leader – in ways that nicely hold a space between an album of electric funk and spiritual jazz! Afro Baile, 2008. Used ... $6.99
A cool collection of contemporary grooves with Brazilian roots – material that's right up there with some of the best recent material from labels like Far Out or Trama, and which shares a similar blend of acoustic and electric elements! Most of these numbers have a warmly soulful glow – great vocals on the top, usually sung in Portuguese – supported with live instrumentation that's heavy on percussion, but also includes keyboards, guitar, and occasional electronics too – all handled with a beautiful sense of balance, and never pushed into the colder territory that can turn us off. A number of these artists are ones we'd never heard at all – making the CD an especially great discovery for us – and titles include "Maimborie" by Mr Ze, "Quando Voce Chega" by Soukeyna, "Jeito Esquisito" by Fabio Fonseca Trio, "Pra Bahia" by Boca Do Rio, "Que Nego E Esse" by Micheline Cardoso, "Preta" by Partido Leve, "Canto Negro" by Ana Paula Da Silva, and "Tambores Da Serra" by Tambores Da Serra. VariousColombian Soul – Compiled By Bagar aka Tricky D ... CD
BBE (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 18.98
A completely different side of Colombian music than you'd know from Discos Fuentes and some of the other mainstream outlets from that scene – as the tracks here are all from the contemporary underground, and represent a really rich flowering of creative grooves and soulful modes! In truth, most of this work might hail from any hip spot in the global underground – save for the fact that the lyrics are often in Spanish, and many tunes have some slight reference to older musical modes – sometimes an acoustic element mixed in with more electronic instrumentation, sometimes a more direct reference! The quality of the tracks is wonderful – a really strong surprise to our ears, as we never would have discovered this music otherwise – and it represents a really great alternative so some of the more staid, often boring attempts to create a global fusion of elements in the mainstream. Titles include "Cada Paso" by Liannia, "Cumbia Lobina (ext mix)" by Dragao featuring Nidia Gongora, "Aquazero" by Systema Solar featuring Pedro Ramaya, "Oyele" by Jimena Angel, "Cuando Canto Grito" by Cerrero featuring Lucia Pulido, "El Leopardo" by El Leopardo, "Mujer Divina" by Salsangroove, "Gualayo" by Radio Rebelde Soundsystem, "La Negra Y El Fantasma" by Bareto, "Nunca Termina" by David Caneva Akle, "Manana Sera" by Ruzto, and "De Donde Vengo Yo" by Los Transatlanticos featuring Pilar Matarola. A clubby classic from the enigmatic Gary's Gang – a group who scored a big disco hit with the title track of this album, a unique groove that features some weird keyboard and synth touches – alongside some surprisingly great percussion at the bottom! The group effortlessly mix electric and acoustic elements, all with a vibrancy that allows both elements to flourish strongly at the same time – creating a playful interplay that really makes their music sound unique compared to some of their disco contemporaries! Titles include "Showtime", "Party Tonight", "Do It At The Disco", "Let's Lovedance Tonight", "Keep On Dancin", and "You'll Always Be My Everything". ✨✧ Steve KuhnSteve Kuhn ... LP
Buddah, 1971. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredibly inventive album from pianist Steve Kuhn – one that takes his earlier modern style, and fuses it with a warmer sort mode for the 70s! The approach is quite unique – in that Kuhn's core trio style is augmented both by additional percussion from Airto, plus occasional string quartet backing – for a sound that's fresh and different on each new tune! Some tracks feature Fender Rhodes, but most are acoustic – and Steve even sings a bit at one point, showing his newly discovered talent for penning a creative lyric. Our favorites are the groovers "The Baby (aka Saharan)" and "Time To Go (aka Tomorrow's Son)" – and the album also features a great version of "Pearlie's Swine (aka The Zoo)". Impulse/Modern Harmonic, 1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the darkest Sun Ra albums of the early 70s – and a set that's also a bit unusual in his catalog as well! The album was issued during Ra's run with Impulse Records – a period that mostly saw the label reissue previous records from the Saturn catalog – save for a rare few like this one, which was an unusual all-new batch of material for Impulse! Because of that, it's been a bit overlooked in later years – maybe missed as less authentic, but actually some of the most striking sounds that Ra created at the time! There's a very strong tension here between electric and acoustic elements – not in the usual fusion-based way, but instead with this vibe that often has the electric instruments providing darker areas of sound, while the woodwinds and percussion have a way of humanizing the proceedings. June Tyson's also at her moodiest on the title track, "Astro Black" – and other titles include "Hidden Spheres", "Discipline 99", and the long improvisation "Cosmo Fire". CD

✨✧ Jorge BenSacundin Ben Samba (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Philips/Polysom (Brazil), 1964. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of Jorge Ben's greatest albums – a groundbreaking blend of samba and soul that forever went onto transform the face of Brazilian music! The record works off the groove set down by Jorge's earlier hit "Mas Que Nada" (which appears on another LP), and takes the blend of bossa, samba, and jazz, and infuses it with a sense of folksy soul delivered by Jorge's raspy vocals and acoustic guitar work. The combination of styles works perfectly – and every track on the album sparkles with a sense of excitement and new musical discovery that will probably blow away most of the recent records you've bought for your collection! ✨✧ Peter NeroDisco Dance & Love Themes Of The 70s/Say Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose ... CD
Columbia/Vocalion (UK), 1973/1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of 70s albums from Peter Nero – finally both out on CD! On Disco Dance & Love Themes Of The 70s, Peter Nero hits the disco years – and uses the groove to really transform his sound in a mighty great way! That bold piano that Peter put down in the 60s is still right out front in the mix – but it gets some soaring support from arrangements by Bert DeCoteaux, who adds in just the right blend of soul and strings to give the whole record a sweetly clubby sound! The approach is way better than most pop-disco modes of the time – thanks to the deeper pedigree of DeCoteaux – and the strong Nero piano lines really keep things moving, even in an instrumental mode. Titles include nice versions of "Feel Like Makin' Love", "Love's Theme", "Superstition", and "Theme From Emmanuelle" – plus a nice original called "Soul Ballet", a great funky number! Say Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose features some surprisingly great Fender Rhodes from Peter Nero – an artist who's normally just associated with acoustic piano! Nero didn't touch electric keys that often, but when he did the results were always great – these pointed, punctuated lines that had the same energy as his acoustic work, but with a very different vibe. Much of the record still features regular piano – mixed with nice charts from Nero and Bhen Lanzaroni – but the electric elements really make the whole thing great, and titles include "Woman Of The World", "A Million To One", "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", "Loves Me Like A Rock", and "Daydream". Morello (UK), 1968/1971/1973/1976. New Copy 2 CDs ... $12.99
Four lost albums from David Blue – a really compelling singer/songwriter, ripe for rediscovery! First up is These 23 Days In September, recorded for Reprise – a really moody little record from David Blue – a folksy singer who's got a style that definitely lives up to the melancholy promise of his name! Blue's definitely an artist with a difference – working in the familiar mode of vocals and acoustic guitar, but with an edge and distinctness that really sets him apart from the folkies of a few year before – that sense of different that really set apart a new wave of contemporaries, like Leonard Cohen, Fred Neill, or Tom Rapp. Titles include "These 23 Days In September", "The Sailor's Lament", "Scales For A Window Thief", "You Will Come Back Again", "Slow & Easy", and "The Grand Hotel". Stories is an overlooked early set on Asylum – the kind of really special singer/songwriter material that really set the label apart at the start of the 70s! David Blue has this compelling vocal style that's moody, but down to earth – inflected here and there with guitar contributions from Ry Cooder, who's understated, but really brings out some special qualities in the tunes. Jack Nitzsche adds in some light strings at points – but overall, things are pretty spare and personal – and titles include "Looking For A Friend", "Another One Like Me", "Sister Rose", "The Blues", "Come On John", "Marianne", and "Fire In The Morning". Nice Baby & The Angel shows David Blue really starting to get some star power in his mix – a fuller set, produced by Graham Nash – with work from Nash on guitar, plus more guitar from Dave Mason and David Lindley – in a nice mix of roots elements, but which never overwhelm that unique sense of songwriting and vocals that set David Blue apart from the rest. Titles include "Darlin Jenny", "Troubadour Song", "Train To Anaheim", "True To You", "On Sunday Any Sunday", and "Outlaw Man". On the cover of Cupid's Arrow, David Blue might look a bit cheesy, what with his open shirt and all – but he's definitely the real deal, and very down to earth in his singer/songwriter approach – with a quality that's only underscored by the lineup on the set – a group that features Levon Helm on drums, Jesse Ed Davis on guitar, David Lindley on mandolin and slide, and Barry Goldberg on piano and organ, and also handling production of the album too. The shift from David's roots is a bit like that taken by other contemporaries who once started in more folksy territory, then found a new way to grow in the west coast singer/songwriter scene – and that means that things are more electrified, but still quite far from mainstream music – with original tunes from Blue throughout, and titles that include "I Feel Bad", "Maria Maria", "Primeval Tune", She's Got You", "Tom's Song", and "Run Run Run". Something of a split single from Don Cuco – a set that features him remixing a track by Ibeyi on side one – really expanding on the warm vocals of the sister duo, with beats that are gentle and glowing, but which move nicely in a strong sort of Afro House mode! The flipside features two originals by Don – "Milan" which is a nicely moody club track, almost like the sort we used to love on early Nu Groove, with keyboards doing as much as the beats – and "Agua Es Vida", a track that does a nice job of mixing acoustic percussion samples with beats, all in a warm global sort of vibe! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Prepare to discover your new favorite artist – a tremendously hip cat who never got his due – and who should be held as high on these shores as British talents like Nick Drake, Bert Jansch, or John Martyn! Like all of those three, Davy Graham is a complete original – a guy with an acoustic guitar, but light years beyond familiar folk – often using all these jazzy changes in his style, and mixing his own music with songs by Dylan, The Beatles, Muddy Waters, and even Art Blakey – but all in ways that are completely transformative, and which maybe use the familiar songs just as a way for Graham to show us how individual he can be – because even a song we know sounds nothing like the original. His guitar work is superb – full of all the fresh ideas, unusual phrasings, and special sounds that the best of his generation were bringing to acoustic music – and titles include "Lotus Blossom", "Down Along The Cove", "Stan's Guitar", "Bulgarian Dance", "Buhaina Chant", "I'm Ready", "Getting Better", "Hornpipe For Harpsichord Played Upon Guitar", and "Pretty Polly". The score begins with a jaunty vocal tune – "Nun Me Scuccia" – which is then echoed in a few other tracks, and mixed with the kind of lighter, playful melodies that were more common in Italian comedies during the period – still mostly with acoustic instrumentation, but also touched with occasional keyboard or guitar lines. The vocal track starts and ends the score – and the set features ten more instrumental numbers in between! CD

The style is as unusual as the group's name and presentation – but almost has as many echoes of other South American folk as it does more familiar work from Brazil – and although the record was cut in the early 80s, it's got an incredibly earthy tone, and sounds much more like some lost acid folk set from the late 60s! Reprise, 1972. Near Mint- ... $39.99
An album of understated brilliance from the great John Renbourn – a set that mostly just features John on vocals and guitar, working through tunes of a traditional nature – yet delivering a record that's full of tremendously powerful moments! There's none of the hoke here that you might have gotten from a folk revival record from a decade before – and instead, Renbourn's bringing all the amazing new discoveries he and his contemporaries have unlocked in the acoustic guitar, as a way of opening up some of the darker corners and spookier elements of the tunes – none of which should be that strong on their own, but which work together here beautifully. Renbourn gets a bit of help from time to time – vocals from Dorris Henderson, harmonica from Pete Dyer, and drums from Terry Cox – but most of the set is just vocals and guitar, even more timeless in 1971 than it might have been before John plays a bit of sitar and harmonica, too – and titles include "Kokomo Blues", "Little Sadie", "Shake Shake Mama", 'The Cuckoo","Willy O Winsbury", "Faro Annie", and "Come On In My Kitchen". First up is the really great debut album from Tom Rush – a sometimes-overlooked singer/songwriter from the Bob Dylan generation – and one who definitely deserves a rediscovery all these many years later! Tom's a great songwriter, and takes off here in a rootsy blend of folk and acoustic blues – backed by lots of great guitar work of his own, plus some spare guest contributions – including occasional harmonica from John Sebastian! Rush is one of those rare breed who handles his music completely without self-consciousness or cliched adherence to his roots – a performance that we'd put right up there with Fred Neill on his legendary Capitol albums, or maybe the bluesier side of Tim Hardin. Titles include "If Your Man Gets Busted", "Poor Man", "Black Mountain Blues", "When She Wants Good Lovin", "Windy Bill", "Panama Limited", and "The Cuckoo". On Take A Little Walk With Me, Tom Rush picks up a bit of an electric edge, but still keeps all the songs and styles very much in the territory that made his debut so great! Al Kooper wrote the liner notes, and also plays electric guitar on all of side one – but the instrument is used in ways that just seem to underscore all the rhythmic changes of Tom's acoustic guitar, and echo some of the shifted rhythms that make the music sparkle. Tunes include originals by Rush and Eric Von Schmidt, plus some bluesy covers too – and titles include "Galveston Flood", "Sugar Babe", "Joshua Gone Barbados", "On The Road Again", "Money Honey", "Who Do You Love", and "Statesboro Blues". Last up is the classic The Circle Game – one of the best-remembered albums from the great Tom Rush – a set that gave the world his well-recorded title track (and the classic "No Regrets"), and which also has Tom really reaching out with a proud new style! The record expands the core sound of Rush in ways that roughly echo some of the early Tim Hardin material at Verve – still bluesy folk at the core, but with arrangements that are slight, but sophisticated – in ways that unlock all these great moods and colors in the songs that you never would have gotten if Rush were just singing and playing guitar on his own! Paul Harris handles the charts, and things are light, but well-pointed – a really beautiful inflection of the vocals and guitar at the core of the performance, often with a very moody style. Titles include "The Circle Game", "Rockport Sunday", "No Regrets", "Tin Angel", "Urge For Going", "Something In The Way She Moves", and "Shadow Dream Song". 2CD set features bonus tracks too – "I'm In Love Again", "Urge For Going (single)", "Coda", "Circle Game (take one)", and "Something In The Way She Moves (single)". VariousNew Horizons – A Bristol Jazz Sound (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Worm Discs (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $22.99
A great little collection that seeks to put the Bristol scene on the map – and to show the kind of inventive jazz the city's been offering up in recent years! The compilers aim to demonstrate that Bristol has as many newly-creative acts as the sort that have been bubbling up in London on labels like Brownswood – and the range of material here really shows a similar way of blending newer ideas and older execution – especially strong in the rhythm department, and with an effortless mixing of acoustic and electric modes. If you've been digging sounds from Comet Is Coming, Nubya Garcia, and Joe Armon-Jones, this set is a great place to take that interest further – on work that includes "Bergson" and "Jabba" by Waldo's Gift, "3.3 Encke Ups" and "Sea Of Apathy & Indifference" by Run Logan Run, "Flump (Ishamel Ensemble rework)" and "Grook" by Snazzback, "Owl" by Lyrebird, and "Bourdain" by Alun Elliott Williams. ✨✧ Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah BandDr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band ... LP
RCA, 1976. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most creative club acts of the 70s – the mighty Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band! Before starting his Kid Creole & the Coconuts combo, August Darnell worked to great fame with Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band – kind of a campy, jazzy ensemble – one that worked with a 20s aesthetic over a disco groove! There's a fair bit of acoustic instrumentation in the rhythms, and lots of those choppy, scratchy lines that we love so much in the Kid Creole work – all of which makes for a very nice change from the usual, especially in the late 70s mainstream. Darnell and Cory Daye are the main vocalists, and Darnell wrote all the lyrics for the album – on titles that include "Cherchez La Femme", "I'll Play The Fool", "Sour And Sweet", "We Got It Made", "Hard Times", "Sunshower", and "Betcha The Love Bug Bitcha". ✨✧ Oliver CheathamSaturday Night (plus bonus track) ... CD
MCA/Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1983. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A stone club classic from the early 80s – one of the best mainstream groovers of the post-disco years! Cheatham's a percussionist by trade, but really comes off with something extra here – a smoothly soulful groove that's sublime from start to finish – no filler, no cliches, just the best sort of rhythms the early 80s scene had to offer! Rhythms are a mix of electric and acoustic beats – blended together with a keenly jazzy sensibility, and topped with sweet keyboards that dance wonderfully alongside Oliver's vocals. Titles include the stellar "Get Down Saturday Night", plus "Something About You", "Through It All", "Just To Be With You", "Do Me Right", "Bless the Ladies", and "Make Your Mind Up". CD features the bonus track "Get Down Saturday Night (special extended version)". CD

✨✧ Davy GrahamHat ... LP
Decca/East Central One (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
✨✧ John WoodSay Hey (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Los Angeles Phonograph/P-Vine (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the few albums ever cut by pianist John Wood – and like all of his sets, a real indie jazz treasure that's well worth discovering! Wood's got this amazingly deft style on the keys – one that's inherently rhythmic, but never showy – always fit perfectly with the album's rotating rhythm sections (all of which are great) – and stretching out with a style that's soulfully expressive at a very personal level. John plays acoustic piano throughout – and players include either Leroy Vinnegar or Henry Franklin on bass, and Billy Higgins or Brad Small on drums. Higgins presence is especially great – as he gets things going at this elliptical level that really works well with the piano – and titles include "All Blues", "Something Sad", "Say Hey", "Days Of Wine & Roses", and "Autumn Leaves". ✨✧ PiranhaHeaded In The Right Direction (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Amazon South/P-Vine (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Bassy funk from the early 80s southern scene – the only album we've ever seen from Piranha, and a gem of a tight little set! The groove here is roughly in the mode of some of the better-known northern club groups in the post-disco years – crafted with lots of boogie bass on the bottom and tight rhythms throughout the set. But there's also a style that's a bit more in the ensemble funk mode here too – one that still keeps most of the instrumentation acoustic, and which has a bit less keyboards and electric percussion than other boogie-era work. Titles include "Funk-a-sol", "One Sided Love", "Let's Get It Back Together", "Good Time Lady", "Headed In The Right Direction", and "Let Your Feelings Show". CD

✨✧ Seven SeasMiami Sound ... CD
Glades/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Back in the mid 70s, The Miami Sound was a great one – a sweet southern Florida mix of New York disco with some warmer funk touches – made very big by the growing soul empire of TK Records, but maybe done best when served up by one of the more obscure groups on the label! That's definitely the case here – as the record's the only one we've ever seen by the Seven Seas, but has a sharp, tight vibe that really gets at the core of the TK sound – snapping, syncopated rhythms that almost point the way towards 80s club – mixed with a warm mix of acoustic and electric elements that really come together with plenty of funky power. Arrangements are by Mike Lewis – and titles include covers of "Do It (Til You're Satisfied)", "Bad Luck", "Fight The Power", and "Swearin To God" – plus the funky original "Super Jaws". CD

✨✧ Lalo SchifrinIns & Outs ... CD
Nautilus (Japan), 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great return to form for Lalo Schifrin – and a straight album of jazz tunes, recorded after years of late 70s disco work! The album almost returns Schifrin to his 60s years with Dizzy Gillespie (except for the fact that there's no trumpet on the set) – and the tunes have a great mix of jazz, Latin, and soundtrack influences – of the sort that first got Lalo noticed back in the early days! Lalo's playing acoustic piano throughout – and pretty nicely, too we might add – and titles include "Ins & Outs", "Con Alma", "Manteca", "Paraphrase", "The Fox", and "Love Poem For Donna". CD
