✨✧ Abstract OrchestraDilla ... LP
ATA (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
There's nothing abstract here – as the set's a fantastically-focused tribute to the late Jay Dee – put together in a style that's mostly jazz, but which also has some great vocal touches too! The music's roots are in hip hop, but the presentation here is awash in strong work on saxes, trumpet, and trombone – used over rhythms that are played live, and which have this warm glow that's like 70s jazz funk, filtered through the hop hop generation! Emphasis is on horn solos, but the set also features twin female singers – who provide some chorus vocals, and a warm link between the instrumental modes in a really great way. So maybe consider this both a soul and a jazz remake of the world of Dilla – and a great one too. Titles include "Welcome To Detroit/The Diary", "Dilla Mix 1", "Official/Fall In Love", "Love", "Angel"," King", "Two Can Win", "Raw Sh*t", "Workinonit", and "Stop". LP, Vinyl record album

Abstract OrchestraMadvillain Vol 2 (with bonus download) ... LP
ATA (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $23.99
A really great take on the music of Madvillain – that famous collaboration between Madlib & MF Doom – served up here in a mostly instrumental mode that's heavy on funk and jazz! You'll definitely recognize the tunes in the set, but the presentation is very different – almost as if someone's gone back to the music, stripped it down to core samples, then worked those back up again with a new sort of energy! The group's directed by Rob Mitchell – clearly the genius behind the whole project – and solos are by James Russell on tenor and flute, Simon Bobby Beddoe on trumpet, Jim Corry on alto, and George Cooper on piano and keyboards. Titles include "Meat Grinder", "Eye", "Figaro", "Can't Reform Em", "Madmix 3", "Rainbows", "Fire In The Hole", "Rhinestone Cowboy", "Operation Lifesaver", and "Borrowed Time". LP, Vinyl record album

Sandro BrugnoliniAbstract Forms – A Selection Of Electronic Moods & Atmospheres ... LP
Musica Per Immagini/Sonor (Italy), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $34.99
Late work from Italian sound library giant Sandro Brugnolini, but great work too – a set that shifts a bit in the styles of instrumentation used, but which follows lots of the same dark passages that Sandro explored in the 70s! The keyboards and electronics are more digital than analog, but never have that cheesy, tinny sound of mainstream work from the time – proof that Brugnolini is a real master of sound, with an ear tuned towards bringing out the richest possibilities from his instruments! A few titles have a more mainstream soundtrack vibe, while others are in a more atonal mode – and titles include "Vapor Killer", "Barbarel", "Omen Nemo", "I Remember Sax", "Young Clan", "Baby Gang", and a number of titles dedicated to the Russian painter, variations on "Kandinsky". Randy CrawfordAbstract Emotions ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1986. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
Randy Crawford's working here with arrangements and production from Reggie Lucas – all very much in that sweet 80s style he was bringing to work with other artists at the time! There's plenty of beats, guitars, and keyboards in the instrumentation – pushing an overall sound that's more electric than some of Randy's jazzier sides from the early days. But Ms Crawford's vocals come out strongly on top of it all – with a poised presence that's clearly the main focus of the set. Lucas plays guitar, and also wrote a few of the tracks – and titles include "Can't Stand The Pain", "Actual Emotional Love", "World Of Fools", "Betcha", "Desire", "Getting Away With Murder", and "Almaz". Binker GoldingAbstractions Of Reality Past & Incredible Feathers ... CD
Gearbox (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 13.99
A great solo set from tenorist Binker Golding – an artist we usually hear on the Gearbox label as part of the Binker & Moses combo, but who maybe sounds even bolder and stronger here in the lead on his own! The set's a quartet date, with a relatively straight group – but the sound is wonderful – overflowing with new ideas, and this sense of voice from the leader that gets fantastic support from Joe Armon-Jones on piano, Daniel Casimir on bass, and Sam Jones on drums! Nobody's pushing too hard, or trying any tricks – yet there's a freshness and individual spirit to the record right from the very first note – unusual rhythms from the trio, and more confidence in Golding's sound than we've ever heard before. Titles include "Skinned Alive Tasting Blood", "Fluorescent Black", "You That Place That Time", "And I Like Your Feathers", and "Exquisite She Green". CD

Ann McMillanGateway Summer Sound – Abstracted Animal & Other Sounds ... LP
Folkways, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 24.99
A really beautiful record from Ann McMillan – one of the lesser-known talents in the female legacy of electronic music – but one we'd put right up there right next to Daphne Oram for her inventive genius! The set was recorded at the legendary Princeton Center For Electronic Music – and has a great approach in which McMillan mixes together sounds from nature with some acoustic instruments – then creates a blend through creative electronics, so that air, sea, traffic, and nature sounds are combined with percussion and other elements. One song is completely created from The Gong sound sculpture by artist Frederick Kiesler; another mixes New York Harbor sounds in an amazing way; and still another reworks a variety of unusual sonic emanations from a harpsichord. Titles include "Gateway Summer Sound", "Gong Song", "Amber 75", "Syrinx", and "Episode". LP, Vinyl record album

Oliver NelsonBlues & The Abstract Truth ... CD
Impulse, 1961. Used ... $3.99
One of the all-time classics of early 60's mainstream jazz – and a beautiful record that showcases writing and arranging talents of Oliver Nelson! Nelson had been bumping around a variety of sessions before this one – as a leader, sideman, and arranger – but it was with this album that his true talents really unfolded – sparkling with a depth of imagination and expression that marked him as one of the greatest artists in 60s American jazz! The group on the set is an all-star sextet – featuring Paul Chambers, Eric Dolphy, Bill Evans, Roy Haynes, and Freddie Hubbard – a disparate group of players who manage to come together with Nelson and find a unique voice that's rarely been duplicated again! The album features 6 fantastic compositions by Nelson, including "Stolen Moments", "Hoe Down", and "Yearnin". A fantastic record – and one that you can't go wrong with! CD

Sun RaOf Abstract Dreams ... CD
Strut (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $13.99 15.98
A fantastic album from Sun Ra and the Arkestra – one that we'd rank right up there with our favorites on the Saturn Records label! The work here has never been issued, and it's extremely beautiful, too – pulled from a few just-discovered studio sessions done after the group was parting ways with Impulse Records, and mostly recording in a live environment! There's an intimacy to these studio tracks that's a nice difference from some of the more freewheeling live work of the period – moments that almost hearken back to the exotic jazz of the earliest Saturn years of the group, mixed with some other currents that seem to point the way towards the excellent Horo Records material to come – especially in the way Ra is phrasing things on his piano. Most groups are relatively small, and titles include the lovely "Island In The Sun" with Marshall Allen on some great flute; a studio take on "Unmask The Batman", better known from live sets, and a playful tune that hints at the group's work on the Dan & Dale Batman album in the 60s; a spiritual stormer "I'll Wait For You", with great piano from Ra and an excellent tenor solo from John Gilmore; and a take on "New Dawn" with work by Marshall Allen on alto, Elo Umoe on bass clarinet, and Danny Ray Thompson on baritone. ✨✧ Slum Village & Abstract OrchestraFantastic 2020 Vol 1 (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Ne'Astra, 2020. New Copy ... $19.99 24.98
Slum Village teams up with the hip hop-reared jazz funk collective Abstract Orchestra for this worthy revisit/live band rework of the legendary Fantastic Vol 2 – a soulful Detroit hip hop classic and a vital piece of the late great J Dilla's legacy! A few cuts have prominent vocals, others have atmospheric backing vocals, but it's Abstract Orchestra's jazzy hip hop soul instrumentals – taking flight on the inspiration of the Jay Dee & Slum Village Detroit hip hop classic – that serve as the driving soulful spirit of this one. They are indeed a sizable crew more than earning the orchestra part of their name, but they know how to keep the core groove in a tight, headnodding mode befitting late 90s soulful hip hop, while finding space to soar within. It's also a testament to Dilla's original production that it makes so much sense fleshed out with horns, strings and more orchestral atmosphere. Vol 1 includes "Contant Garden", "Jealousy", "Hold Tight", "Tell Me", "Untitled", "Fall In Love" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Oliver Nelson's follow-up to his classic Blues & The Abstract Truth session for Impulse – and like that one, a tremendous little album – filled with deep tones and wonderful colors in sound! The group here's a bit larger than before – an ensemble that includes Phil Woods on alto, Ben Webster on tenor, Thad Jones on trumpet, Pepper Adams on baritone, Roger Kellaway on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Grady Tate on drums. The album includes some superb original compositions by Nelson – just the kind of overlooked jazz numbers that make the set great – and as with most of his arrangements from the time, there's a perfect balance between group force and intimate solo space! Titles include "The Critic's Choice", "Blues & The Abstract Truth", "One For Bob", and 2 versions of Dave Brubeck's "Theme From Mr. Broadway". Also included are two bonus tracks- "One For Phil" and "Night Lights". CD

Akerblom & ZengerAkerblom & Zenger – Live At Roma Jazz 2015 ... LP
Jazzaggression, 2015. New Copy ... $19.99
A beautifully spiritual set of duets between bassist Teemu Akerblom and saxophonist Mike Zenger – playing together here without any other instrumentation at all! Akerblom sets things up in a modal mode on most numbers – but mellower, without any piano or drums – and Zenger then blows these long, soulful solos on alto sax and flute – the former with a tone that's often quite deep, with a great deal of feeling. Things get slightly more outside and improvised as the set moves on – a shift that gives the whole thing a bit of a loft jazz vibe – and titles include "Peaceful Mornings", "So One Has To Go", "Abstract Blues & The Truth", "Frozen Land", and "Aurajoen Rannoilla". Som Livre/Far Out (UK), 1975. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99
One of the sweetest electric records to come from 70s Brazil – the fabulous first effort from the Azymuth trio, and work that's hardly been matched again! Although the group here have plenty of the warm keyboard touches of their more famous later work, they're also moving in territory that's a bit more abstract as well – using some noisier electronics amidst the smoother ones, to create a style that's somewhere between fusion, electric funk, and some of the more soaring Brazilian rhythms of the post-bossa years! The keyboards of Jose Roberto Bertrami are worth the price of admission alone – and include Fender Rhodes, Arp, and clavinet – plus bits of Hammond organ too! There's more than a few great breaks and samples on the set – and titles include "Brazil", "Caca De Conta", "Melo Dos Dois Bicudos", "Manha", "Periscopio", and "Montreal City". BGM (Takayuki Shiraishi)Back Ground Music ... LP
Studio Mule (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $19.99
A set that's hardly background at all – as the tracks here have a lively, forward sort of energy that reminds us of our favorite post-punk experiments from the British and German scenes at the start of the 70s – done with a darkness that really resonates with the album's cover image too! There's hardly any vocals at all on the songs – other than muted, abstracted lyrics that are buried under brooding basslines, echoey drums, and fuzzy work on guitar and keyboards – all with a moody Factory Records sort of vibe – and by that, we mean Factory circa 1980, not the later sunnier years. ✨✧ BrahjaBrahja (180 gram pressing) ... LP
RR Gems (Estonia), 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... About November 15, 2020
Deeply textured jazz from Devin Brahja Waldman – working here in a mix of acoustic and electric modes that's not unlike some of our favorite recent material from Greg Foat – but much more complex overall, and with a stronger spiritual vibe! Waldman handles various saxes, piano, and keyboards – in a lineup that's also heavy on more keys and percussion – but always presented in a way that's layered and cohesive – not as much individual performance within the group, but an overall sound – so that familiar elements are a bit abstracted, even when the songs are tuneful and forward-flowing. There's a few moments that get slightly avant, but most of the work is in darker, moodier territory – and also features guest work from Daniel Carter on soprano sax, Margaret Morris on voice, and Sam Shalabi on guitar. Titles include "Medicine Woman", "Welcom To Wohlom", "Return Of The Good Enemy", "In The Mess", and "Just Passing Through". LP, Vinyl record album

Errol Brown & The RevolutionariesCulture Dub/Medley Dub (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
Two classic albums of dub from Erroll Brown – both maybe a bit more obscure than his classics of the time, but which also show the real depths of his talents! Culture Dub is a batch of instrumental dubs of songs from Culture – who were then riding high after their Two Sevens Clash album – taken here by Brown into very moody, very abstract territory – a stretched-out, spacey sound that has all sorts of cool guitar and keyboard elements bubbling amidst the murky basslines and drums. Titles include "Everyday Love Dub", "Skillful Dub", "Iron Sharp Dub", "Freedom Jam", "Deep Root Dub", and "Harder Than The Rest Dub". Medley Dub is a very different record overall – one that reworks older recordings from Sonia Pottinger's catalog of the late 60s and early 70s – rocksteady modes taken into dub territory, with really amazing results! You'll hear momentary echoes of the old amidst the soundclash of the new – and titles include "Revelation Of Dub", "Trinity Of Dub", "Tip Top Affair", "Engineer's Special", "Natty Dutty Dub", and "Swing & Dub". 2CD set features 24 more bonus tracks – Culture-related tracks that include "Work On dub", "Dog A Nyam Dub", "Freedom Rock", "Natty Dub", and "Jah Rastafari (version)" – and 15 other Brown dubs from the late 70s – including "Merry Go Round Version", "In The Park Version", "Lick Version", "Blue Bird Dub", "Revolutionary Version", "Stormy Dub", and "Road Hog". Eric Burdon & The AnimalsWinds Of Change ... LP
MGM, 1967. Very Good Gatefold ... $11.99
The Winds Of Change are definitely afoot in the sound of The Animals – as the album's one of their most psychedelic outings ever – and also a bit funky at times too! Production by Tom Wilson is really great – echoey at most moments, with a kind of "flash" and shimmer around the drums that really spaces things out, and almost gives a Velvets sort of feel to the proceedings. The group's bluesier roots are still in place at times – but these have also been tripped-out and abstracted too, in modes that are a few years ahead of other blues rock combos on the rise. Titles include "It's All Meat", "Winds Of Change", "Poem By The Sea", "Yes I Am Experienced", "Hotel Hell", "San Franciscan Nights", and "Man Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gary BurtonGary Burton Quartet In Concert ... LP
RCA, 1968. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Groundbreaking work on vibes by Gary Burton – recorded in a setting that's live and open, yet quite groovy too! There's a rhythmic freeness that marks the set from the very first note – lessons learned from the generation of Ornette, yet taken in new direction – and definitely into new colors and tones – thanks to Burton's amazingly chromatic vibes, and the vivid guitar of Larry Coryell – not to mention the unusual rhythms from Steve Swallow on bass and Bob Moses on drums. These youthful players push the envelope even more than on some of Burton's other RCA albums of the time – going for a groove that's much more open and abstract, and which puts Coryell's guitar in a role that's as important as Burton's vibes in the set. Titles include "Wrong Is Right", "Walter L", "Lines", "The Sunset Bell", and "Blue Comedy". LP, Vinyl record album

John CageEmpty Words – Parte III ... CD
Cramps/Ampersand, 1977. New Copy 2CD ... $7.99 17.99
A compelling vocal performance from John Cage – recorded in Milan in 1977, and stretching for over 2 hours – as the great performer also reminds us of his poetic and performance skills, making all these strange and unusual vocalizations into the microphone on the state! The feel is very different than his piano work – and the audience seems to get really agitated at parts – as Cage delivers these truly "empty words", which are more like clipped bits of familiar elements, or sometimes more like abstract vocal expressions. The overall feeling is similar to some of the classic Dadaist vocal compositions from the early 20th century – as Cage's nonsense text unlocks new lyricism in familiar verbal passages! CD

✨✧ John Carter & Bobby BradfordSelf Determination Music ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A landmark recording – one of a handful of early documents of the avant garde LA scene, featuring a nimble quartet headed up by the inventive frontline of John Carter on reeds and Bobby Bradford on trumpet, over the fluid rhythm team of Tom Williamson on bass and Chicago expatriate Bruz Freeman on drums! Carter and Bradford's energetic approach followed its own line of development, much in the way that other small cells of improvisers were developing their own take on the "new thing" in the post-Coltrane/Coleman environment of the late 60s and early 70s throughout the country. The compositions unfold in a way that implies both multi-linear improvisation and composed events, but blurs the line between the two, all the while played with a great deal of fire and few of the intellectual abstractions of other free players! Finite, 1976. Near Mint- ... $99.99
Joe Chambers like you've never heard him before – delivering the true promise of all his years, and working with some of the hippest players in soul jazz! The album's an abstract bit of electric funk – cut with some slight loft jazz touches, but always returning to a tightly rhythmic focus that's really great – one that cuts some of the too-out moments with a nice sense of groove! The group is wonderful – with Dick Menza on some sharp-edged saxes, Paul Mtezke on tripped-out guitar, Eddie Martinez on electric piano, Herb Bushler on bass, and both Omar Clay and Ray Mantilla on percussion. Tracks are long, with a wonderful spiritual jazz approach that takes the record farther than any other Chambers album we can think of – and Joe also plays a bit of vibes and marimba, inspired no doubt from his former work with Bobby Hutcherson. Titles include "New World", "Chung Dynasty", "Wayne Shorter's Bossa Nova", "Rock Pile", and a great cover of Herbie Hancock's "Blow Up". LP, Vinyl record album

A current Italian vocalist – but one who's taking a lot of cues from older singers of the 50s and 60s – particularly those of the ice-blonde sexpot variety! Anna's working here in a blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation – often given a retro-styled mode that reminds us of some of the Irma La Douce artists in recent years – but which also gets a bit more abstract as the set moves on. From covers of tunes like "Call Me" and "An Occasional Man", Anna moves into more personal original material like "Swimming" and "Could Be", which have a more modern, chilled out sort of groove that pushes the album into new territory. Other tracks include "Hopelessly Fool", "A Guy What Takes His Time", "U Go To My Head", "Adrian", and "Love Is A Reason". CD

The work was created with two guiding principles – the musicians could not discuss or plan their performance together in advance, and they would also play for a full hour, with no breaks at all! The idea grew out of a series of live performances, but then was captured by Dave in the studio – with results that are as varied as the musicians involved. Some selections are very unusual and almost abstract, others have a more familiar free jazz mode – and the ability of DeRose to shift in these spaces is one of the highlights of the set. The first volume includes performances with John Edwards on bass and Dan Nicholls on electronics; Rory Simmons on trumpet and electronics and George Crowley on saxes and effects; Dan Nicholls on electronics and Karl Vanden Bossche on percussion; Tom Challenger on saxes and Colin Somervell on bass; Sam Crowe on Rhodes and effects and Level Nevill Malcolm on bass; and Dario Rossetti Bonell on guitar and effects. DimlitePrismic Tops ... CD
Now Again, 2010. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
Abstract beats with a depth of global influences from Dimlite – the Swiss beatmaker/producer's debut for the Now Again/Stones Throw – and far reaching effort that covers a lot of aural atmosphere over its running time! Dimlite's work for Sonar Kollectiv was among the most forward looking on the roster, and that unpredictable approach is well served here. Glitchy synth sounds and bubbling electronic errata mix with more earthy rhythms and hazy melodies – with vocals that also give it a more grounded feel in spots, but this is adventurous and unpredictable in all the right ways. Titles include "Kalimba Sewathswamp/Kurt Feelings", "On The Same Picture" featuring vocals by Elan Tamara, "Firevomit (ODN)", "Elbow Flood", "Can't Get Used To Those (Afterlude)" and more. One of the first, and best, releases of abstract vibes/hip hop jazz beats – put together by the legendary French DJ Cam, and still one of the best albums he ever did. The album's more than a few years old, but take our word for it when we say that it still sparkles like some of the best new funky we're work stocking! Gruppo Improvvisazione Nuova ConsonanzaEroina (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cometa (Italy), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Rare work from this legendary Italian improvisational group – a lineup that features famous modernists Mario Bertoncini, Egisto Macchi, and Walter Bianchi – as well as soundtrack genius Ennio Morricone! The sounds are quite dark and abstract – often somewhere out in the space of Morricone's more atonal soundtracks from the early 70s, but even looser overall – as you can feel the improvisational energy of the players coming together – feeling out space between spare percussion, strings, and horns. The record actually has one famous funky number – "Haschich", which has this amazing break underneath some off-tuned sitar and other odd noises – but most other tracks are much darker and more outside. Other titles include "Orgasmo", "Eroina", "Aghi", "Warum", "Raptus", and "Stridori" – plus another take on "Haschich". LP, Vinyl record album

Joe HarriottMovement/High Spirits ... CD
EMI/Vocalion (UK), 1964/1965. New Copy 2 CDs ... $19.99
Overlooked gems from this key reedman on the Brit modern scene of the 60s – two rare albums in a single package! First up is Movement – one of the most obscure albums recorded by Joe Harriott – leading light of the British avant scene in the 60s – and one of the best, too! The album features Harriott working with a quintet that includes Shake Keane on trumpet, Pat Smythe on piano, Bobby Orr on drums, and Coleridge Goode on bass – playing in territory that's somewhat in the neighborhood of his Abstract and Free Form albums, but also a bit more inside, with more of a focus on swinging, hard-hitting jazz. The rhythms are often quite tight and soulful, and although the album's touched with lots of angular moments – both in the solos and backings – the overall sound is wonderfully grooving and tremendously captivating! The album's got that perfect blend of modern, modal, and soul that make the best Brit jazz albums from the mid 60s so wonderful – and the set list includes original tunes such as "Movement", "Spaces", "Blues On Blues", "Revival", "Beams", and "Count Twelve". High Spirits is pretty unique – a set of takes on tunes that come from a musical show, but recast strongly as soulful sides for the Harriott combo! Pianist Pat Smythe re-arranged all tracks in the set – and really gives them a new sort of energy – opening them up for lots of solo work on his own piano, plus alto from Harriott, and some beautiful trumpet lines from the great Shake Keane – a player who always sounds great next to Joe. The rest of the group features Coleridge Goode on bass and Bobby Orr on drums – and titles include "Home Sweet Heaven", "Something Tells Me", "Go Into Your Trance", "I Know Your Heart", and "Was She Prettier Than I". Joe HarriottSouthern Horizons ... LP
Jazzland/Down At Dawn (Italy), 1960. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
Excellent! This record is one of the lost chapters in the career of the great British alto player Joe Harriott. The session was recorded before Joe's experimental "Abstract" release, and way before his "Indo Jazz Fusions" experiments – but it's still an excellent session of off-kilter bop that shows what a keen talent Joe was on the alto. He's playing here in the company of the great Shake Keane on trumpet – another fellow West Indian expatriate who was living in London – along with Coleridge Goode on bass, Harry South on piano, and Bobby Orr on drums – plus some bonus from Frank Holder on a few tracks, which sound mighty nice. The session was probably released in the UK, but this US issue is the only time we ever seem to see it – and it's not a record that shows up often. Tracks include "Liggin", "Caravan", "Senor Blues", "Count Twelve", and "Southern Horizons". LP, Vinyl record album

George HarrisonElectronic Sound ... LP
Apple, 1969. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A real oddity from George Harrison – a record of abstract electronics, cut right around the same time as his bigger mainstream solo hits! The record is a highly experimental one – a session that has Harrison working with Bernie Krause, and exploring territory that's much more in the late 60s Limelight Records mode than it is that of Apple – which is quite possibly why the label is listed as "Zapple", not "Apple"! Each tune takes up a full side of the album – and builds slowly out of soundshapes and textures, very much in the manner of some of the best work from the academic electronic music centers in the US at the time. And while the album may be a bit loose and unfocused overall, it's actually got a really appealing quality that we love a lot – a sense of free and naive exploration that's pretty great. Titles include "Under The Mersey Wall" and "No Time Or Space". LP, Vinyl record album

Now Again, 2014. New Copy 2 LPs ... $19.99 21.98
They definitely got the title right on this one – because the group never seems to move in any sort of direct line – instead always tripping around nicely with all these hip little twists and turns! Karl Hector & The Malcouns are the same loose collective of players you'll know from their work as The Whitefield Brothers, Poets Of Rhythms, and other famous combos – and here they take on a whole host of exotic rhythms and instrumental elements – but always in a way that mixes them up with the heavy funk we've come to expect! There's a bit more psych at play with The Malcouns than some of the other groups from the musicians – which seems to really set them free to explore the outer limits of sonic consciousness – all with the feel of some weird electric ethno experimental project on a late 60s label like Limelight or Verve. Afro Funk elements crop up from time to time, but always in a relatively abstract way – and titles include "El Gusto", "Girma's Lament", "Kaifa (parts 1 & 2)", "Bring It On Down", "Mission Control", "Who's Foolin Who", and "Sharpville Massacre". Spare soundscapes from Japanese keyboardist Yutaka Hirose – mostly composed on a variety of electronic instruments, but with a vibe that's very natural and organic overall! The music is very slow-moving, and unfolds at a quiet pace – all definitely in the tradition of the best Ambient Music projects from Brian Eno – but maybe even taking things a bit further, with a gentle sense of construction and abstraction – all blended with occasional sound effects pulled from nature, which furthers that organic quality in the music. Titles include "Taiko", "Humming The Sea", "Through The Windows", "Nova", and "Slow Sky". The first-ever solo album from Hugh Hopper – best known as the bassist for Soft Machine, but an equally creative artist on his own! The album is a bit more experimental, and sometimes more jazz-based, than Hugh's work in the bigger group – a blend of odd acoustic sounds with slight electronic elements – sometimes a bit abstract, sometimes a lot more focused and tuneful! The album's a key underground expression from the bigger UK jazz rock scene of the time – proof that its more adventurous roots were still present in the best players – and Hopper's work here on bass, percussion, and mellophone is augmented by a shifting array of players who include John Marshall on percussion, Gary Windo on tenor sax, Malcolm Griffiths and Nick Evans on trombone, Lol Coxhill on soprano sax, and Pye Hastings on guitar. The title's a bit strange, but it turns out to be a surprisingly great fit for this enigmatic album from Haruomi Hosono – a set that he bills as sort of a journey in sound, although one that's served up mostly by the man himself – as he mixes electronics with a range of acoustic source elements too! Some tunes are as catchy as some of Hosono's famous pop work, others have a more laidback, spacious quality – maybe a bit like some of the non-verbal experiments that David Sylvian was moving into at the time – not entirely abstract, but definitely a change from before. There's a brightness to the proceedings that fits the image on the cover, too – and titles include "Esashi", "Orgone Box", "Ohenro-San", "Retort", "Caravan", "Pleocene", and the upbeat extended number "Laugh Gas". Pure wonderfulness from Internet – a group who seem to bound forward strongly with each new release! These guys are easily one of the most compelling mainstream soul acts we can think of – still very lean, and working with an indie-level vibe – but also able to focus in on hooks and the sorts of catchy elements that are bound to make the group huge in coming years! There's a crispy, crackling sound in the rhythms all the way through – but never in a too-abstract level, as some more sci-fi oriented artists can hit – and although the record features guest work from Janelle Monae, Tyler The Creator, and a few other stars – we actually love the group's own core performances the best. A glorious send off from J Dilla – with some of the most soulful productions Dilla's ever laid down! It's impossible to listen to The Shining without considering the sad circumstances surrounding its release, and all too easy to over praise, but this record is filled timelessly inventive production. A lot of the more leftfield, abstract touches that create most of the character on the Donuts LP are really on the outskirts of the sound here – a much richer, deeper, funky drum influenced batch of sounds. We're speechless. There's one more official posthumous LP in the can, and thank goodness for that. A tremendous single improvisation by this very hip trio – Taqshi Dorji on guitar, Tyler Damon on drums, and Dave Rempis on alto, tenor, and baritone sax! The drums have this very resonant quality at times – almost acting with elements that make up for the lack of a bass at times – while the guitar moves through more abstract sonic textures that are maybe some of the sharpest elements in the set – as Rempis blows with a beautifully soulful vibe, and really helps balance the sound, and ground the whole thing with his amazing, never-ending sense of imagination! Mr Bongo (UK), 2005. Used ... $9.99
A long-overdue album from saxophonist Bukky Leo – a player with roots in 70s Ethiopia, and a range of experiences that also includes key recordings in the early British acid jazz scene! Bukky's got a resume that includes work with Fela and Tony Allen – and he's working here in a mode that's very similar to recent work by the latter – an updated version of older Afro Funk styles, augmented slightly by additional keyboards and a warmer, more dancefloor-styled groove – but a core sound that's highly rhythmic, very acoustic, and filled with great work on guitar, sax, and flute! Bukky's also singing a fair bit on the record too – calling out the lyrics with a raspy warmth that's a lot more personal than some of Tony Allen's more abstract vocalizations on recent work – and the record's got a really focused feel that makes it one of the best takes on Afro Funk we've heard in a good number of years! Titles include "Ake Bo Je", "Times Like These", "Dreamer", "Dem Go Shout", "Secular Society", "His Majesty", "The Vision", and "Why Can't We Live Together". CD

Very compelling work by this French producer – featuring a subtle set of tracks that mixes moody jazz with abstract modern rhythms – in a style that sort of feels like an update on the Blue Note "new thing" sound laid down by artists like Bobby Hutcherson, Andrew Hill, and others during the mid 60s. Lone's got a complicated approach, and mixes off-kilter piano, vibes, bass, and other instruments with washes of sound and processed electronics that are slightly funky, but mostly atmospheric. An experimental sound library set from Egisto Macchi, but one that's got a really organic sort of vibe – as the music was done for a film that looked at the rites and superstitions of the south of Italy – and gets some really well-deserved spooky sounds in the process! Some moments almost feel ethnographic, while others are more in an abstract range of expression, but still relatively tuneful – maybe prefacing that later offshoot of UK industrial creativity that would emerge in the generation of Hafler Trio, Zoviet France, and Nocturnal Emissions. Instrumentation includes vibes, cello, piano, flute, and organ – but often used in very unusual ways – on titles that include "Sette Aerofoni", "Un Violoncello Magico", "Vibrafono Con Bocca", "Violento Con Grido Vibrafono", and "Tappeto Aerofoni". Percussion and effects – wrapped up together beautifully in this rare Italian sound library set! The album's got a groove that's exactly what you'd expect from the title – acoustic percussion mixes with electronics that are sometimes spare and stark, sometimes production effects, and sometimes smoother keyboards that have a bit more of a jazz-based approach. There's a pretty dark feel to most of the record – a style that's almost a cross between Italian horror scoring and some of the industrial work that was coming out of the north of England at the time – and some of the best numbers here get really noisy, and use simple but effective production techniques to abstract the sound. An unusual title, but one that refers to Jackie McLean in quartet, quintet, and sextet formation – a growing lineup that develops along the course of the record, as new players are added into the mix with a casual, almost blowing session approach! The set begins with Jackie's alto set out in spare territory with Mal Waldron on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – plenty of space to solo on "Sentimental Journey" and "Why Was I Born" with sharp changes and deeply soulful tones that really push past the conventions of the tunes – and as the record moves on, Hank Mobley steps in on tenor and Donald Byrd on trumpet – expanding out the sound for nicely-blown versions of"Abstraction", "Confirmation", and "Contour". Actions For Free Jazz (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $26.99
The notes here are a bit different than usual for an album of improvised music – as the instruments aren't listed, and instead the back cover just states "all sounds by Joe McPhee and Lasse Marhaug" – which is a great way of really getting at the spirit of the record! Although there's definitely some familiar horn work that you might hear from McPhee, the whole thing is more of a larger sonic document – one where the end results make it very difficult to figure out the sources of the sounds! We're guessing that Marhaug was live-producing the record – and it's clear that McPhee is also vocalizing a bit too – although again, it's hard to say, given the deep textures and overall richness of sound – which is relatively abstract throughout. A really cool criss-crossing of modes from percussionist Mohammad Reza Mortazavi – a musician who handles a range of older Persian instruments on the set, but also produced the album with a fair bit of echo and effects – so that the acoustic instruments crackle with deeper, more electric vibes – almost folding the future into the ancient, with really mindblowing results! The cover is a bit short on notes, but it does sound like most of the music comes from percussion played in quick, cyclical modes – then abstracted somewhat by the production, but in ways that are complex, and very free from obvious gimmicks. ECM (Germany), 2020. New Copy ... $24.99 25.99
A record that's maybe one of the most tuneful, lyrical we've ever heard from guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel – and that may have a lot to do with the wonderful help in the trio from Scott Colley on bass and Brian Blade on drums! The tunes still have some of the abstract qualities of Muthspiel's other work, and certainly continue his very distinct exploration of color and tone – but there's this sparkle, almost a sense of joy about most of the numbers – very present when things are grooving and moving fast, but also really there in a sense of subtle bounce when they're a bit more mellow. The quality's a bit hard to describe, but it's there right from the start, and holds up beautifully throughout – on titles that include "Wondering", "Angular Blues", "Everything I Love", "Kanon In 6/8", "I'll Remember April", "Ride", and "Camino". Myndflower is a very cool trippy, hypnotic one-man instrumental project from Javier Gonzalez – the groovy musician who's also behind the groups Boogaloo Communicators and Indo-Sonix, but who manages to make some equally special sounds here as a solo act! The record's got a heady sound that's very much in keeping with its title and Javier's painting on the cover – moody, somewhat abstract, and with an echoey darkness that might make you feel like you're in some sort of invisible cave – at least while Javier's letting his guitars get all fuzzy and trippy as they slowly slide through the spare space of the record. A really unique little record from Ze Eduardo Nazario – a set that maybe begins in improvised jazz, but which soon opens up to a world of different sonic possibilities – on some moments that have a very Brazilian vibe overall, even if it is an experimental one! Eduardo plays a range of different percussion instruments – drums, kalimba, xylophone, tablas, and lots more – alongside musical partners Cacau on tenor sax and flute, and Lelo Nazario on piano and keyboards – the last of which are used very gently, and sparingly – so that there's very little electric feel to the set – save maybe this slight glow in the background. There's also a few very abstract vocal passages, but delivered with a rhythmic pulse – so that the voice is just another element in the overall sound, which moves between rhythmic and freer modes. A killer set of searing soulful spiritual material from Oliver Nelson – and one of his best albums of the 70s! There's hardly anything "Swiss" in the music – save for the fact that it was recorded at the Montreux Jazz Fest – as the large ensemble recording has Nelson at the helm of a very hip group of musicians – really stretching out into territory that's more Strata East than any of his other work, especially on the title track! In addition to the tenor from Gato Barberi and alto from Eddie Vinson – both featured on the title – the set also features Charles Tolliver and Harry Beckett on trumpets, Bosko Petrovic on vibes, Na Na on barimbau, Bernard Purdie on drums, and Stanley Cowell on piano. The set's got that unique post-colonial vibe of some of the other great London recordings of the early 70s – such as work by Cymande or Demon Fuzz, both of whom have some dubby similarities to the Nkengas work on this set – possibly because the whole thing was served up for the Orbitone Records label – usually a home to sounds from Jamaica! There's a nice use of echo that really abstracts the basslines and percussion – although the grooves themselves are still more straightforward than any from Kingston at the time – and definitely echo the Nigerian roots of the group. Tracks have a lot of cool little funky corners and sharp edges that really set them apart – and titles include "London Special", "Ndu Bu Isi", "Anyi Bundi Igbo", "Jungle Beat", "Anyi Buofu", and "Ube Frank Special". MusiCues/Wah Wah (Spain), Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Fantastic spacey sounds by the young Jean-Jacques Perry – heard here before his more famous American recordings with Gershon Kingsley – in a mode that's maybe even more abstract and modern overall! The sounds are an unusual link between the musique concrete scene in France and some of the more commercial uses of electronics at the time – almost a bit like the blend that was coming from some of the hipper cats experimenting in The Netherlands, even though this album only received a limited release as a non-commercial sound library record. This reissue features a full side of bonus material – all unreleased material and demos – and titles include "Saturian Bird", "Music Of The Planets", "The Alien Planet", "Cybernuts", "Spatial Blues", "Barnyard In Orbit", "Caverns In Deep Sea", and "Aqua Density". A pretty heady little set, from a pretty heady trio of talents – drummer Bobby Previte, guitarist Nels Cline, and keyboardist Jamie Saft – who works here on Hammond, Fender Rhodes, and mini-moog! The music is very dark and often distorted – as if the other two musicians have borrowed some of Cline's love of effects, which are often used to deepen and abstract his sound – which is definitely the case here, as the music builds in waves of fuzz that bring a very progressive feel to the record – a bit like some of those great early 70s experimental sets that were equal parts jazz and psych. Titles include "Parkour", "Paywall", "Totes", "Occession", "The New Weird", "Machine Learning", "Woke", and "Flash Mob". CD

Q TipRenaissance ... LP
Universal/Motown, 2008. New Copy 2LP ... $18.99 29.98
A damn good record by Q-Tip – his first official album of the new millenium (not counting the unfairly mooted Kamaal The Abstract) – featuring both spacey keyboard grooves and some Native Tongues style boom bap! Q-Tip really does kind of pick up where he could have left off years ago, and it's a reward of our faith in him that it's still fresh after all these years, without drastically altering the formula. The key may be the focus – it's a filler free affair with solid track after solid track. Q-Tip handles most of the production – utilizing a bed of deep samples, groovy keys and head nodding beats. Q-Tip is in fine, relaxed form here, nothing left to prove. Here's hoping he records more often from here on on out! Titles include "Johnny Is Dead", "Won't Trade" (a should be classic single), "Getting' Up", "Official", "You", "We Fight/We Love" feat Raphael Saadiq, "Move", "Dance On Glass", "Life Is Better" feat Norah Jones, , "Believe" feat D'Angelo, "Shaka" and more. Leo/BTF (Italy), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A fantastic little record, and one that really lives up to the "elettro" promise in its title – as Giuliani Sorgini uses lots of offbeat electronics, in a mode that's almost a link between the musique concrete experiments of the 60s, and some of the more electronic-based sound library material of the time in which the album was recorded! There's lots of dark moments and strange noises on the record, but Sorgini does a good job of balancing tuneful sections with more abstract passages – in a way that moves beautifully between darkness and light, but with maybe a bit more time in the shadows overall. Titles include "Marker", "Loudspeaker", "Solitudine Venusiana", "Maracas Nell'Atmosfera", "Fabbrica Spaziale", "Dinamica K", and "Malinconia Magnetica". LP, Vinyl record album

Richly textured work from STVZ – music that echoes lots of the other currents we love in contemporary Brazilian music, but maybe with a quality that's a bit more abstract! The tracks here are all relatively short – there's 17 of them on an album that's only close to an hour in length – and instrumentals mix nicely with vocal tracks, often using compression on both aspects of the music – so that the fuzz in the guitar lines might be echoed by some processing on the vocals. Titles include "Mata Borrao", "Imposter", "Talvez Tudo Ate De Certo", "Uma Cancao Com Delay", "Se Um Ninho De Mafagafinhos", "perebea Rebariboro", and "Apenas Os Hipocontriacos Entenoerao". Blue Note (France), 2001. Used ... $2.99
A pivotal album from Swiss trumpeter Eric Truffaz – a back to basics bit of electric funk, with no hip hop or outside influences to mess up the groove! The sound is spare and stripped down – with Truffaz's atmospheric trumpet in the lead, and some lean work on guitar and percussion to set up the sound. A few tracks have added elements – such as oud – and the overall feel is kind of a mix of 70s space jazz and current strands of abstract funky jazz. Another feather in the cap of Truffaz – one of the most compelling Blue Note artists of the past decade! Titles include "Mantis", "Yasmina", "The Point", "Saisir", "No Fear", and "Parlophone". CD

Denis WiseWize Music ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $18.99
Denis Wise plays all instruments on this record – everything but the kitchen sink! Oh wait – the liner notes actually indicate that he does play a kitchen sink – and a garbage disposal too – but in ways that are completely changed, as he mixes them with sounds from a variety of guitars, keyboards, percussion, and various electronic instruments – all in this wild style that's surprisingly earthy and organic! At some level, the music is more a garage version of electro-acoustic modes from the academy – but at another, it's pure unbridled creation, with a sense of sonic joy that really comes through on the best numbers. Some songs are slightly tuneful, and there's maybe a bit of offbeat abstracted vocals here and there – on tunes that include "Balfazzar", "Light As Air", "Valhalla", "Machine Time Ship", "Love In Foam & Surf", "Andro", "Celes", and "Hedonic Rapture". A really wonderful collection of dub tracks built on older grooves from the Treasure Isle label – better known as a hotbed of ska and rocksteady at the end of the 60s! The set features three unusual albums that were created by producer Errol Brown after the initial Treasure Isle label had stopped recording – mid 70s sets that brought new dubby energy to older rhythm tracks from the catalog – all given superb instrumental touches from Tommy McCook & The Supersonics, and greatly abstracted in the studio through the magical talents of Brown on the mixing board! All three records are relatively obscure – Treasure Dub 1, Treasure Dub 2, and Pleasure Dub – and are presented here along with lots of bonus tracks and detailed notes. Flying Dutchman, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Bubbling avant soul from The Internet – aka Syd The Kid & Matt Martian – who really step up their game on Feel Good! Syd has developed strongly as a singer – with a light, breathy touch that's a warmly welcoming foil to some of the more abstract production touches. That said, it's never too loose or abstract on the production tip – with a focus on tighter songcraft, and featuring solid guest appearances by singers Yuna Zanai, Tay Walker, Jesse Boykins III and more. They're recording for Columbia, but The Internet is working in a very strong indie soul mode here – and like Frank Ocean, they're at the top of the line of Odd Future alums we feel best about. A fantastic statement from pianist Vijay Iyer – an album recorded with a sextet who really seem to help the artist leap forward strongly with a more spiritual vision than ever before! The group is great – with Graham Haynes on cornet, Mark Shim on tenor, Steve Lehman on alto, Stephan Crump on bass, and Tyshawn Sorey on drums – and in addition to boldly-phrased work on acoustic piano, Iyer also plays some Fender Rhodes – used in more spacious ways that are extremely beautiful, and which we find far more soulful than some of his more abstract use of electronics! The set's quite a surprise – both for ECM and Iyer – and titles include "Poles", "Far From Over", "End Of The Tunnel", "Down To The Wire", "For Amiri Baraka", and "Thrednody". CD

A glorious send off from J Dilla – with some of the most soulful productions Dilla's ever laid down – and appearances by Common, D'Angelo, Pharoahe Monch, Madlib, MED, Black Thought and others! It's impossible to listen to The Shining without considering the sad circumstances surrounding its release, and all too easy to over praise, but this record is filled timelessly inventive production – and passionate rhymes from the honored guests. A lot of the more leftfield, abstract touches that create most of the character on the Donuts LP are really on the outskirts of the sound here – a much richer, deeper, funky drum influenced batch of sounds. We're speechless. There's one more official posthumous LP in the can, and thank goodness for that. Tracks include in-your-f**kin' face intro "Geek Down" with Busta Rhymes, "E=MC2" feat Common, "Love Jones", "Love" feat Pharoahe Monch, "Baby" feat Madlib & Guilty Simpson, "So Far To Go" feat Common & D'Angelo (come back D', the world needs you), "Jungle Love" feat MED & Guilty Simpson, "Dime Piece (Remix)" feat Dwele, "Love Movin'" feat Black Thought and "Won't Do". Vortex, 1970. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Groovily tripped-out work from vibist Dave Pike – and one of the few American albums that matches the experimental sound of his work for MPS! The session's often quite free and open – in a way that not only uses odd instrumental combinations and arrangements, but which also features some offbeat production by Herbie Mann that further abstracts the sound! Elements of Pike's earlier work shine through in a few of the more straightforward groovers, but his new European-endowed sense of hipness wins in the end – thanks to a good deal of modal grooves, psychedelic elements, and even a bit of fuzzy Fender bass! Other players include Lee Konitz on alto sax, Don Friedman on piano, Chuck Israel on bass (electric and acoustic), and Eddie Daniels on tenor and clarinet – and titles include "Free Improvisation", "The Drifter", "Ballad", "The Doors Of Perception", and "Anticipation". Pac Man has never looked so menacing before – but the cover image might be fitting, given the way that Scientist rips into the cuts and chomps them down to their barest essence – before building up massive dubs with the help of the Roots Radics band! The album's a key illustration of that new generation of dub unleashed by Scientist and some of his contemporaries – versions that go way way past the originals, and are often so abstracted, they work together more as dark splatters of noise, with just a slight Kingston undercurrent to tie them to familiar reggae modes. Great stuff throughout – a record that's definitely as compelling as it's cover – and with titles that include "Under Surveillance", "Prince's Wrath", "Space Invaders Regroup", "World Cup Squad Lick Their Wounds", "Vampire Initiative", "Malicious Intent", "The Dark Secret Of The Box", "SOS", "Man Trap", and "Look Out Behind You". The Savoy jazz catalog gets the remix tradition – following nicely in the mode of similar projects on Verve or Blue Note! The work here is all pulled from classic bop sessions of the late 40s and 1950s – key tracks that defined the sound of Savoy back in the day, but cut down here to their core elements – then laid out over more contemporary rhythms for the modern dancefloor! The best numbers actually preserve some sense of jazz soloing – an approach that we like better than other too-abstract remakes of older jazz on the market – and titles include "Moose The Mooche (Quantic rmx)" by Charlie Parker, "Night In Tunisia (DJ Jazzy Jeff rmx)" by Duke Jordan, "Lover Man (King Britt's Speakeasy mix)" by Dizzy Gillespie with Sarah Vaughan, "Minor Vamp (Basement Boys 12")" by Curtis Fuller, "Yardbird Suite (St Etienne mix)" by Herbie Mann, "Bohemia After Dark (Diamond D rmx)" by Cannonball Adderley, "Caravan (DJ Smashish rmx)" by Dizzy Gillespie, and "Movin Nicely (Eclipse rmx)" by Modern Jazz Quartet. Fiercely improvised work from the duo of Kaoru Abe on soprano and sopranino saxophone – and Sabu Toyozumi on drums and percussion! On "Song For Mithue Totozumi", the pair jump right into the fray – with Abe spinning out these incredible lines with effortless ease – taking his horn into the kind of territory we're used to hearing from European saxophonists, with superb support from Toyozumi! Toyozumi is wonderful on "Song For Sakamoto Kikuyo", in three parts – a piece that builds up with this organic, almost abstract energy from the percussion – very spacious in parts, but woven together beautifully by these snaking, yet angular lines from Abe's reeds – which gain intensity as the performance moves on, building to a real sense of ferocity by the end! MGM/Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 5CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic package of work from The Animals – all their great second chapter albums for MGM, offered up here with bonus tracks too! First up is Winds Of Change, presented in both stereo and mono mixes – one of The Animals' most psychedelic outings ever – and also a bit funky at times too! Next is Twain Shall Meet – a set that's not as tripped-out as some of their other late 60s work, and which almost starts to show Eric Burdon's rising love of soul and funk! The sound is still pretty rockish overall – but there's some great use of bass rumbling at the bottom – bringing up a rumbling quality that fits nicely with Burdon's somewhat bleak presentation of the lyrics at various points. Production by Tom Wilson almost has a raspy, lo-fi sort of feel – different than the bluesier roots of the group, and almost a precursor of indie work in decades to come! Titles include the classic "Sky Pilot", plus "Monterey", "Just The Thought", "Closer To The Truth", "No Self Pity", "Orange & Red Beams", and "We Love You Lil". Every One Of Us is a real gem from The Animals' overlooked late 60s years on MGM – a time when the group were easily making some of the most inventive music on the label! The styles here are even wider than before – definitely an attempt to showcase "every one of us" that made up the group – in a blend of spacey sounds, gentle folksy moments, and some of the rougher tones of previous MGM records. Many titles were written only by Burdon – a bit of a change from before – and showcase an increased use of acoustic guitar alongside his bleak vocals. Titles include "The Immigrant Lad", "Year Of The Guru", "Serenade To A Sweet Lady", "White Houses", "New York 1963/America 1968", and "Uppers & Downers". Next is Love Is – a fantastic double-length set from The Animals – recorded in LA in the late 60s, and with plenty of great Sunset Strip influences in the mix! The band here is different than before – with Zoot Money handling both organ and piano, plus a bit of vocals, and Andy Summers joining in on guitar – and production is by the group itself, who shake off some of the trippier styles of previous records, and almost go for a "live in studio" sort of sound! There's a confluence of styles here that's really great – some of the blues of the group's roots, bits of Eric Burdon's growing love of soul, and some fuzzier touches as well. Some tracks are quite long jams, and titles include "Gemini", "Madman", "As The Years Go Passing By", "To Love Somebody", and "I'm An Animal". Bonus tracks include "Monterey (mono single)", "White Houses (single stereo)", "Anything (single)", "Gratefully Dead", "Ain't That So", "When I was Young", "A Girl Named Sandoz", "River Deep Mountain High (single stereo)", and "Sky Pilot (parts 1 & 2)", CD

This album lets Axelrod fully explore his talents for larger studio arrangements, and complex yet soulful instrumentation. The record is subtitled "an anthology of awareness after birth, based on the 18th century poems of William Blake" – and it features incredible arrangements conducted by Don Randi, played by a host of excellent LA jazz and studio players. The record is subtitled "an anthology of awareness after birth, based on the 18th century poems of William Blake" – and it features incredible arrangements conducted by Don Randi, played by a host of excellent LA jazz and studio players. The overall sound is spacey and dark, with nice touches of funk, and plenty of cool instrumental passages that have been sampled over the years by hip hoppers and other producers. Titles include "London", "The Fly", "The Human Abstract", "A Divine Image", and "The Sick Rose". Reissued with the original gatefold cover and everything! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Roy AyersLifeline ... LP
Polydor, 1977. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of Roy Ayers' best-remembered albums of the 70s – a sublime blend of mellow numbers and some of his more club-oriented grooves of the time – all wrapped together with a genius that we can only describe as Ayers-like! The album's a beautiful example of the balance that Roy was striking in his work at the time – because alongside some of the more upbeat, catchy numbers, there's other tracks that are a fair bit more laidback, and almost abstract at times – a wonderful extrapolation of that sensitive Ayers blend of jazz and soul, with key emphasis on the vibes and keyboards. Titles include the massive groover "Running Away" – which you'll recognize from a key sample history over the years – and club cuts "Cincinnati Growl", "Fruit", "Sanctified Feeling", and "Stranded In The Jungle" – plus the more laidback cuts "Gotta Find A Lover", "I Still Love You", "Lifeline", and "This Side Of Sunshine". ✨✧ Dave Douglas & Frank WoesteDada People ... CD
Greenleaf, 2016. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the most soulful albums in years from trumpeter Dave Douglas – quite a surprise, given that the whole thing is a dedication to the dada movement! There's a very deep sound to the record – thanks in part to tremendous drum work from Clarence Penn, and equally strong bass from Matt Brewer – who set up this chunky bottom of the record that almost feels like it's got roots in some sort of New Orleans heritage, but very abstracted, and taken into the right sort of modern territory for Dave's expressions. The piano work of Frank Woeste is also great – especially when he picks up a bit of Fender Rhodes – and it's maybe his conception of chunky blocks of sound that give the whole album its great spirit. Titles include "Mains Libres", "Oedipe", "Longings & Illusions", "Danger Dancer", and "Noire Et Blanche". CD

✨✧ Dr JohnBabylon ... LP
Atco/Get On Down, 1968. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Seminal work from Dr John – one of his key late 60s albums that set the world on fire at the time – and which still stand as some of the doctor's greatest achievements! The approach here is a fantastic abstraction of older New Orleans roots – not nearly as rigid as in some of John's later music, and really used here just as a leaping-off point for these cool tripped-out explorations – often with a style that's got a very heady quality. The arrangements are wonderful – and bring in some off-kilter jazziness to inflect John's rootsy style with a sound that shows that he was opening his ears to all that was around him at the time – all the best elements he was picking up in Nola and Cali, fused into something really unique! Titles include "Black Widow Spider", "Barefoot Lady", "Twilight Zone', and "The Lonesome Guitar Strangler". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Karl Hector & The MalcounsUnstraight Ahead ... CD
Now Again, 2014. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Ike YardNight By Night EP (red vinyl pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Les Disques Du Crepuscule/Superior Viaduct, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really moody record from the Les Disques Du Crepuscule label – a short set, and one that's full of plenty of experimental moments – maybe the sort of record that would have been more at home on Factory Records or 99! There's certainly some of the creative percussion you'd hear on the later label – often abstracted with processing, and mixed with electric drums too – in this heavy mix of deep bass, cold keyboards, and some very mysterious vocals! Titles include "Motiv", "Cherish", "Night After Night", "Sense Of Male", and "Infraton". LP, Vinyl record album
