Joshua AbramsNatural Information ... LP
Eremite/Aguirre (Belgium), 2010. New Copy ... About December 18, 2020 (delayed)
Some of the most meditative, spiritual sounds we've ever heard from the great Josh Abrams – a record that goes way past his more familiar work on bass – even though that's pretty darn great! For this set, Abrams reaches out to a host of different instruments – including the harmonium, dulcimer, and guimbiri – as well as additional percussion, and acoustic bass as well – all instruments he uses in this really rich, textured way – layring the organic sounds with contributions from Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Emmett Kelly on guitar, and Frank Rosaly on drums. The record also features a few more really compelling instruments – a bit of Arp from Jim Baker, harmonium from Lisa Alvarado, and autoharp from Ben Boye – instruments that come in towards the end of the record, to make things even more hypnotic and mesmerizing. Titles include "Dolphin Cave Dazzling", "Mysterious Delirious Fluke Of The Beyond", "Abide In Sunset", "A Lucky Stone", and "Soul Talisman". LP, Vinyl record album

Joshua AbramsRepresencing ... LP
Eremite/Aguirre (Belgium), 2012. New Copy (reissue)... About December 18, 2020 (delayed)
Brilliant work from composer/arranger/creator Joshua Abrams – one of the most creative figures to come out of the Chicago scene in the past couple decades – no hyperbole necessary! On Represencing Josh is largely working with the guimbri – the North African traditional string instrument – plus a bit of organ, harps, and bells – used sparely alongside the core instrument. The guimbri gives the record an earthy, traditional base – as Abrams reaches out to inspire a lager ensemble that includes Chad Taylor on drums and gong, Nicole Mitchell on flute, Michael Zerang on tambourine, Jeff Parker and Emmett Kelly on guitars, Tomeka Reid on cello, David Boykin on tenor sax, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet – all familiar players, with whom Abrams has worked often – coming together here with a very spiritual vibe. Titles include "San Anto", "Represencing", "Moon Hunger", "Sound Talisman", "Sungazer", "The BA", "Enter Mountain Amulet", and "Cloud Walking". LP, Vinyl record album

Joshua Abrams & Natural Information SocietyMandatory Reality ... CD
Eremite, 2019. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99
A really fantastic album from bassist Joshua Abrams – a set that may well be his greatest to date – and that's saying a lot, given all the other work he's given us in recent years! The double-length set has Abrams working with this lineup of improvising jazz talents, but in a way that's very rhythmic, and very organic – slow-building songs that almost seem to mix jazz with inspiration from gamelan music, but with very spiritual currents overall – music that builds slowly and flows to the cosmos – almost in a way that reminds us of the seminal "On The Beach" by Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Yet Abrams is very much in his own territory here – working with a lineup that features the leader on guimbri, Lisa Alvarado on harmonium and gongs, Mikel Avery on tam-tam and gongs, Ben Boye on electric autoharp and piano, Hamid Drake on tabla and tar, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, Nick Mazzarella on alto saxophone, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet – with every member of the ensemble also performing on flutes. The sound is incredible – music to build a bridge to the heavens – and titles include "In Memory's Prism", "Finite", "Shadow Conductor", and "Agree". CD

✨✧ Muhal Richard AbramsCelestial Birds (with bonus download) ... LP
Karl (UK), 1968/1980/1989/1995. New Copy ... $24.99
A limited vinyl collection of work from the legendary Chicago pianist Muhal Richard Abrams – one of the founding members of the AACM, a hell of an improviser, and a musician who's also featured here with a focus on both his larger compositional vision, and some of his rare electronic performances! Side one features the classic "The Bird Song" from the late 60s – a long piece that features Anthony Braxton on alto, Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre on tenor, Leroy Jenkins on violin, Thurman Barker on drums, and Abrams on piano and clarinet – plus some vocals from David Moore. Next are two shorter electronic pieces from 1989 and 1995 – "Conversations With The Three Of Me" and "Think All Focus One". The set finishes with the title track of Abrams' great album "Spihumonesty" – with Muhal on piano and electronics, Amina Claudine Myers on electric piano and organ, Roscoe Mitchell on alto and flute, Yousef Yancey on theremin, and George Lewis on trombone and electronics. ✨✧ Joshua AbramsCloud Script ... LP
Rogue Art (France), 2020. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from Joshua Abrams – a set that's very different than some of his other work in recent years, but every bit as great! The set's got a lean group – Abrams on bass, Jeff Parker on guitar, Gerald Cleaver on drums, and the great Ari Brown on tenor – of Awakening fame – a group that delivers a more stripped-down version of some of Josh's more spiritual ideals – but in ways that also touch base with more conventional jazz expression! Make no mistake, there's nothing conventional about this set – the approach is very unique, and very striking – and the presence of the younger musicians really sets Ari Brown on fire, and reminds us of what a great soloist he can be when he's pushed to his limits. Titles include "Collapsing Novelty", "Duke Hill", "Echo Tracer", "In Place Of Memory", and "Coniunctio". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Muhal Richard AbramsAfrisong (India Navigation) ... LP
India Navigation, 1975. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most beautiful albums ever recorded by this legendary AACM pianist! The album was a rare Japanese-only session from 1975, but recorded in Chicago – and it features Muhal playing solo – in beautifully warm spiritual tones that are very different from his playing on many other albums from the time. The work is wonderfully introspective, showing a whole new side to Abrams' genius – the sensitive, contemplative keyboardist who occasionally emerges during some of Abrams' larger group sessions, but who usually gets pushed back in the fray of larger instrumental interplay. The whole album's extremely beautiful, and it's darn near impossible to find in the original! Tracks include "Afrisong", "The Infinitive Flow", "Hymn To The East", "Roots", and "The New People". Mid 80s soul from Detroit's Colonel Abrams – One of the first artists to take the then burgeoning house sound into the mainstream – paired up with nicely grooving modern soul vibe! William Klein/David CompnayWilliam Klein – ABC (hardcover) ... Book
Abrams, 2012. New Copy ... $11.99 40.00
A lavish examination of the work of William Klein – an important postwar photographer who moved into the worlds of film and graphics in the 60s – and left an indelible imprint on both the scenes in New York and Paris! The book offers up Klein's work in a few different slices – some relatively straight early black and white photographs, which are exceptional – then some shots in Tokyo, and a lot more in Paris – which get increasingly wilder as the 60s move on, and which lead up to a section on his films – including the classic Qui Est Vous Polly Magoo, and Mister Freedom, which also featured Serge Gainsbourg! There's other later work too – and the book is a mixture of black and white and color photos, printed on heavy paper – 182 pages, hardcover, and oversized. Book

Abrams Comic Arts, 2012. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We've been living with the comics of Daniel Clowes for so many years, we sometimes forget how great he is – so fortunately, we've got this wonderful book to remind us of his genius all over again! Clowes is incredible – a comic stylist who's not only drunk deep of the best modes of the postwar giants, but also found a way to turn their aesthetic into a voice that's completely his own – never derivative at all, and always with a freshness that keeps things interesting over the decades! Most folks know him for Ghost World or some of his graphic novels – but this book goes way way back, and looks at his earliest work, his earlier Lloyd Lewellyn and Eightball magazines, and a wealth of other projects – with images from so many different strands of his creative life. The book also features an interview with Clowes, essays by Chris Ware and Chip Kidd, and lots more too – all presented as an oversized art book – full color throughout, hardcover, and 224 pages. There's a man standing on the cover, but you might have to look close to see him – and that's part of the style of Liu Bolin – a Chinese artist who paints himself to blend in with his surroundings! The approach is pretty darn amazing – sometimes more successful than others, and always a fantastic commentary on the role of the individual – especially in the urban setting from which Bolin sprang. Each oversize page features a large full color image – and there's as many photographs done in Europe as there are anywhere else – further illustrating Liu's ability to blend into his surroundings! 223 pages, hardcover, oversize, and full color. ✨✧ Anthony BraxtonQuintet Basel 1977 ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), 1977. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A very dynamic performance from a very dynamic group – a hipper than usual ensemble for Anthony Braxton, given that just about everyone here is a heavy hitter! The four long tracks are all Braxton compositions – in that special formula that encourages group sonic activity, while exploding with individual solo moments – a good thing, given that musicians include Muhal Richard Abrams on piano, George Lewis on trombone, Mark Helias on bass, and Charles Bobo Shaw on drums! Braxton himself plays alto, sopranino, and clarinet – and Helias has these wonderfully dark tones that kind of seal the deal on the whole performance – a moody bottom that makes all the other sounds really come across in a fantastic way. ✨✧ Dexter Gordon, Red Rodney, Von Freeman, et alCharlie Parker Memorial Concert ... LP
Cadet, 1970. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99
In Chicago, the cult of Bird fanatics probably lived harder than in other cities – and in the few decades after Charlie Parker's death, the city was host to annual Bird Memorial concerts during the month of August. This obscure 2LP set on Cadet does a good job of documenting the energy and comraderie that went into those sessions – as it captures tunes from four different performances during the series, all recorded at Chicago's North Park Hotel. Players include Dexter Gordon, Howard McGhee, Vi Redd, Lee Konitz, Art Hoyle, Von Freeman, Jodie Christian, Roy Haynes, Muhal Richard Abrams, Eddie Jefferson, and Kenny Dorham – and the set's a great crossection of players – from the bop to the less obvious Parker-philes – in a strong illustration of Bird's still-consistent influence even at the end of the 60s. Titles include "Ornithology", "Yardbird Suite", "Disappointed", "Parker's Mood", "Now's The Time", and "Billie's Bounce". LP, Vinyl record album

Bruno Marini may not be the biggest name in that small group of players of the baritone saxophone – but he's a hell of a musician, and works his horn in a really wonderful way on this debut set! Marini's got an ability to swing with a modern sense of tone and color – a bit like Cecil Payne at his best, back in the day – but also very different, with this human, compassionate quality that brings things out of his instrument that we're not sure we've heard from anyone else! The set features all original numbers – written either by Marini, or the group's pianist Marcello Tonolo – and the rest of the combo features Marc Abrams on bass and Valerio Abeni on drums. Makaya McCravenIn The Moment ... LP
International Anthem, 2015. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $79.99
A totally unique record from drummer Makaya McCraven – and a great one too! The set's built around improvised performances recorded over the period of a year – with some of Chicago's best underground jazz talents, including Matt Ulery on bass, Marquis Hill on trumpet, Jeff Parker on guitar, Justefan on vibes, Desean Jones on tenor, Tony Barba on tenor and electronics, and Josh Abrams on bass – and the performances are then edited down into these shorter, focused tracks that are really wonderful! The music is still quite live in its approach at most moments – and often given a very rhythmic pulse in the way it's put together, but never in any sort of hokey or heavy-handed remix way. The basslines are wonderful – full, round, and very modal – and titles include "The Jaunt", "Time Travel", "The Encore", "The Drop", "Finances", "Just Stay Right There", and "Three Fifths A Man". One of the first true moments of genius from producer Hal Willner – the man who helped open up so many ears to diverse music with projects like these! The album's a tribute to the music of Nino Rota, as used in the films of Federico Fellini – but rather than just be a slavish remake, the set instead has a set of ultra-hip jazz musicians providing their own interpretations of Rota compositions – in a range of formats that's completely breathtaking, and which takes these sublime melodies and transforms them even past their use in the films! The set features fantastic Jaki Byard solo performances of "Amarcord" and "La Strada", solo vibes from Dave Samuels on "La Dolce Vita/Juliet Of The Spirits", the Clarla Bley Big Band performing "8 1/2", solo soprano sax and gong from Steve Lacy on "Roma", David Amram playing "Satyricon", solo Bill Frisell guitar on "Juliet Of The Spirits", a great "La Dolce Vita Suite", with passages by Muhal Richard Abrams and Sharon Freeman, and even a medley of "The White Sheik/I Vitelloni/Il Bidone/Nights Of Cabiria" by arranger William S Fischer with Branford Marsalis and George Adams on saxes, Wynton Marsalis on trumpet, and Kenny Barron on piano. Ultra Vybe (Japan), Early 80s. New Copy ... $26.99
Excellent 12" tracks from the Streetwise/Partytime label – the kind of unusual dubs, instrumentals, and remixes the company always put on its extended singles – usually numbers that are sparkling with just the right sort of electro touches that made these records real favorites for both the breakers in the streets and the mixers in the club! Streetwise had a number of big hits back in the day, but most of these numbers are non-vocal versions of those songs – and really show the great ear for beats that helped make the label one of the key forces for bringing the sound of hip hop back into soul music. Titles include "Reprise Me" by Paul Simpson Connection, "Don't Take Your Love Away (inst)" by Pushe, "Music Is The Answer (dub)" by Colonel Abrams, "Jet Set (inst)" by Dr John, "Slack (funkhouse mix)" by Slack, "Living For The Weekend (rough mix)" by Rockers Revenge, "Funky Soul Makossa (free beats)" by Nairobi & The Awesome Foursome, "I Don't Need Your Handouts (inst)" by Citispeak with Jeanne Harris, and "See The Light/Feel The Heat (dub)" by Air Force 1. The presence of McCall is no surprise, though – Malachi Favors and Muhal Richard Abrams also make appearances on early 60s Chess jazz albums – but it does give the record a nicely special sort of sound, as does the added instrumentation on some tracks too. That's a striking name for this all-star group – and the music is equally striking too – a large piece composed by Muhal Richard Abrams, recorded here in memory to his long legacy in jazz! The work is a classic example of the way that Abrams was able to mix larger orchestrations and improvised performance – a standard that he held high in the early days of the AACM, explored strongly on his Black Saint records, and which is championed here by a lineup that includes Josh Evans and Dave Ballou on trumpets, Julian Pressley on alto, Alfred Patterson on trombone, Robert Debellis on tenor and soprano, Graham Haynes on cornet, Tom Lawton on piano, and Chad Taylor on drums – plus alto from Marty Erlich and Bobby Zankel, the former as the group's conductor, the latter as the music director. Art works here in a large group that mixes contemporary modes and percussion traditions, vocal passages and instrumental lines – all with this sense of knowledge and righteousness that really tie Burton back to previous years in the Chicago scene! The great Ari Brown is in the set on tenor and soprano sax, and Edwin Daugherty is on alto and soprano – and Maggie Brown sings on the set for a bit, too – evoking the spirit of her father Oscar Brown Jr, who would have loved the vibe of the record. The group's also got the great Yosef Ben Israel on bass, keeping a strong groove amidst the other percussion and drums – and Eddie Beard plays piano and organ in the group. The title track "Ancestral Spirits" is a tribute to Phil Cohran and Muhal Richard Abrams – and other titles include great extrapolations on "All Blues", "Listen Here", "Soul Drummer", "Summertime", "Night In Tunisia", and "Killer Joe". A beautiful combination of words and image – as the poetry of Patricia Smith is combined with vintage 70s photographs by Michael Abramson – the same sort of material that was featured in the Light On The Southside book/album from the Numero Group! This presentation is quite different than that one, though – as Abramson's images from Chicago nightclubs are presented on stark full pages, often with Smith's words as a sidebar – as if she's writing lyrics to his music, in a collaboration that comes off beautifully. As with Light On The Southside, the photographs here were taken at Chicago clubs that include Pepper's Hideout, Perv's House, and The High Chapparal – but they seem nicely different here, and include a number of images that were not in that book. 190 pages, hardcover, and filled with striking images and black and white.
